Entertainment Tonight has debuted the first trailer for the Jim Sheridan-directed war drama Brothers. I usually avoid posting ET trailers, but this one surprisingly doesn’t have any of that annoying voice over. The film stars Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, Ray Prewitt, Sam Shepard and Clifton Collins Jr. and hits theaters in the height of award season on December 4.

A remake of the 2004 Danish film Brødre, Sheridan’s Brothers follows a young man who comforts his older brother's wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan.

The latest issue of Vanity Fair has three more character images from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, featuring Mia Wasikowska as Alice, Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen. The film opens in March and also stars Anne Hathaway, Michael Sheen, Matt Lucas, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry and Alan Rickman. The images were scanned in by the folks over at Planet Disney and cleaned up by Peter over at Slash Film. You can check them out in higher quality here.

A semi-sequel to the original animated classic, Burton’s Wonderland picks up with Alice, now 17, attending a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn’t remember.

A new batch of photos from The Runaways set have surfaced over at Just Jared, giving us our first look at New Moon co-stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning in the biopic about the hugely influential all-girl hard rock band. Stewart plays guitarist Joan Jett and Fanning is playing lead singer Cheri Currie.

The film, which is the feature directorial debut of accomplished music video director Floria Sigismondi, will revolve around Jett and Currie and follow them from the band’s meteoric rise as teenagers to their dissolution and disillusionment. Currie eventually became caught up in drugs and a hard-partying lifestyle. Runaways is slated for a 2010 release and also stars Scout Taylor-Compton and Michael Shannon.

The never-ending toy-to-movie projects keep on coming as screenwriter Brad Caleb Kane has revealed, via his Twitter page, that he’s set to write a film based on the Fisher Price toy View-Master for producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

View-Master is a device used to view different 3-D images that are inserted on paper disks. It’s been around since 1939 and was originally marketed as a way for viewers to enjoy images of colorful and picturesque tourist attractions. It has since been marketed as a children’s toy.

No plot details have been revealed, but Kane says his adaptation will be in the vein of “old 80's Amblin movies”, such as The Goonies and Young Sherlock Holmes. The film is set up at DreamWorks.

Kane, a co-producer and writer on Fox’s sci-fi series Fringe, recently finished co-writing the sci-fi action flick Uprising with Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond). Wolfgang Petersen (Troy, The Perfect Storm) is attached to direct the film, which revolves around the resistance efforts of some citizens after Earth has been occupied by a powerful alien race.

The View-Master flick is just one of the many future projects based on a toy/board game. Adaptations of Stretch Armstrong, Clue, Candyland, Monopoly, Battleship and Major Matt Mason are all in development.

Previously rumored by the folks at Latino Review to be the frontrunner, Robert Rodriguez has now confirmed to Ain’t it Cool that Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) will direct Predators. Neil Marshall (Doomsday) had also been rumored to be up for the job.

While confirming the news to AICN, Rodriguez also offered up some story details for the reboot. The filmmaker, who’s producing and writing the screenplay, says Predators will involve “a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors”.

The first Predator hit the screen in 1987 and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, and Kevin Peter Hall. The story followed an elite team on a mission to rescue hostages from a guerrilla group in Central America. It was directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard).

A sequel starring Danny Glover opened in 1990 followed by the mash-up flicks Alien vs. Predator and AvP: Requiem several years later. While the original only featured one Predator, the reboot will up the number of the popular alien species.

Antal previously directed the heist flick Armored, which is set to open in the fall. It stars Columbus Short, Matt Dillon, Laurence Fishburne, Jean Reno and Skeet Ulrich and centers on a newbie guard for an armored truck company who is coerced by his veteran coworkers to steal a truck containing $42 million.

Predators is slated to open July 7, 2010.

A big screen adaptation of the classic 80s arcade game Asteroids is in the works. According to the trades, Universal has won a four-studio bidding war to pick up the film rights to the Atari video game with Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) on board to produce.

In Asteroids, initially released as an arcade game in 1979, a player controlled a triangular space ship in an asteroid field. The object was to shoot and destroy the hulking masses of rock and the occasional flying saucer while avoiding smashing into both.

As opposed to today's games, there is no story line or fancy world-building mythology, so the studio would be creating a plot from scratch. Universal, however, is used to that development process, as it's in the middle of doing just that for several of the Hasbro board game properties it is translating to the big screen, such as Battleship and Candyland.

Newcomer Matthew Lopez, who came out of Disney's writing program having worked on the studio's recent movies Bedtime Stories and Race to Witch Mountain, has signed on to write the screenplay. The young scribe also wrote the most recent draft of The Sorcerer's Apprentice, currently in production with Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel starring.

Di Bonaventura's other producing credits include Constantine, Doom, Shooter, Stardust and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which hits theaters August 7.

Late last month Columbia Pictures, at the last minute, backed out of Moneyball, an adaptation of Michael Lewis’ book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game that had Brad Pitt in the lead role and Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh behind the camera.

After Columbia pulled the plug, Soderbergh and company tried to shop the film around to Warner Bros. and Paramount, but both passed. And now, in a New York Times article focusing on the collapse of film, it’s been revealed that Soderbergh has left the project.

The film would have focused on Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics who used a sophisticated computer analysis system to piece together a team that regularly contended for the World Series despite a payroll dramatically lower than such big-market rivals as the New York Yankees.

Pitt and comedian Demetri Martin were the major actors cast, with other roles to be played by actual baseball players. Soderbergh also shot interviews with real baseball figures, which were going to be interspersed between the narrative.

The decision to halt the film came after Columbia executive Amy Pascal read a rewrite that Soderbergh did to Steven Zaillian’s script and found it very different from the earlier scripts she championed.

According to the New York Times, Columbia is still hoping to get the film off the ground with Brad Pitt and a director more interested in Zaillian’s version.

Selma Blair, Amy Smart, Jason Lee, Giovanni Ribisi and Kevin Pollak are set to star in Columbus Circle, an indie thriller that George Gallo is directing from a script he co-wrote with Pollack. Principal photography is slated to start this month in Los Angeles.

The film centers on a reclusive heiress (Blair) in an upscale Manhattan apartment building who is brought face-to-face with her fears when a detective (Ribisi) shows up to investigate a homicide next door and a new couple (Smart and Lee) moves in to that apartment. Pollak plays the building's concierge and one of the heiress' few friends.

On a recent episode of his internet talk show, Pollak revealed that the idea for the film came on a plane ride back from the Cannes Film Festival after producer Christopher Mallick had lost the rights to a remake of a Korean film. Two loft sets were already built and ready to go, so Gallo and Pollak crafted a story that would take advantage of them.

Pollak and Ribisi recently collaborated with Gallo on Middle Men, a dramedy that about the life of Jack Harris, one of the pioneers of internet commerce. The film, which is still seeking U.S. distribution, also stars Luke Wilson, Christopher McDonald, James Caan, Terry Crews, Gabriel Macht, Robert Forster and Kelsey Grammer.

Gallo’s previous directing credits include My Mom's New Boyfriend, Double Take and Trapped in Paradise. His writing credits include Bad Boys and Midnight Run.

Pollak and Lee are currently co-starring together in Kevin Smith’s A Couple of Dicks.

The Sci-Fi Channel is in the process of developing a new version of Alien Nation, the 1988 sci-fi film-turned-television series. Veteran television producer and writer Tim Minear, whose credits include Dollhouse, Drive, Angel, Firefly and The X-Files, is writing the screenplay.

Alien Nation centers on the partnership between a veteran cop and his alien detective partner, set against the larger tale of alien "newcomers" who move to Earth and attempt to assimilate into society. The film was directed by Graham Baker and starred James Caan, Mandy Patinkin and Terence Stamp.

In 1989, 20th Century Fox TV adapted the movie for television, with Eric Pierpoint and Gary Graham in the lead roles. The show lasted just a single season but spawned a series of books. The show was revived in 1994 as a series of TV movies for Fox, starting with Alien Nation: Dark Horizon. Five more were ultimately aired; the last, Alien Nation: The Udara Legacy, ran in 1997.

The new Alien Nation would include a mythology that evolves over time and will also touch on some of the issues of the day, such as the immigrant experience and how society integrates an incoming culture.

The project marks the latest in sci-fi revivals. A new incarnation of Battlestar Galactica found success with the Sci-Fi channel for four seasons and ABC has a new version of the 80s miniseries V set to launch later this fall.
