Hype Jones is a Australian born DJ/Producer who recently moved to NYC to rock the house… with House. His good friends The Kickdrums gave him their song ‘Love’s A Drug’ and Jones took it upon himself to create a gentle house remix, that just like a drug, will consume your entire body to only leave you wanting more once it ends. The non-intrusive melodies will crawl up on you and before you know it, there is no escape. Whether this makes you dream about being in an intergalactic ride across the universe, or simply think about the many definitions of love, one thing is for sure (and i really hate to use this word in 2010) this beat is epic.

Sadly, Forrest Gump forgot to mention that experimental music is, too, much like a box of chocolates. It is its unexpected quality that makes it that much more enjoyable. With classical music you expect pianos and violins, with most rock songs you can be sure that an electric guitar will appear… but with experimental music, you really ‘dont know what you are going to get’. The experimental genre is about exploring combination of sounds, wether organic or synthetic, to induce the listener of a unique experience.

Yeasayer is a Brooklyn based experimental band who are releasing their second album ‘Odd Blood’ tomorrow (Feb 9th). While the way they describe themselves sounds like a mouthful “Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel” , Odd Blood will be one of the most delicious boxes of chocolates we will consume this year.

However, XXXchange thought this was not enough and dipped O.N.E. onto a warm electronic fudge creating a very exquisite remix.. and has now left The Music Ninja with a couple extra pounds.

If you love electronic tunes that are full of intensity without being in your face all the time, then look no further than Gui Boratto. The Brazilian DJ/Producer has, in my mind, mastered the art of what I like to think of as subtle electronic. There’s no denying that a few minutes into this song, the beat in this one is huge, but the peaks and valleys of this track make you appreciate the highs and lows so much more. It’s kind of a twist on Jason Lee’s memorable line from Vanilla Sky — “Without the bitter, the sweet just ain’t as sweet”. Boratto really turns the heavy beat sections into a wordless chorus, repeating it over and over, and the beauty is that you just want to throw your hands in the air each and every time.

Gui Boratto – No Turning BackDownload audio file (guiborattonoturningback.mp3)

His recent remix of Massive Attack’s “Paradise Circus” is another great, but even more subtle, example of what he does so well. The unique vocals of Luciana Villanova, Gui’s wife, only add to the haunting beauty of this song. I think what it really comes down is that unlike a lot of other producers out there seemingly trying to blow out speakers with each drop, Boratto’s focus is first and foremost on creating a great melodic song, and the fact that the song happens to have a killer beat is icing on the cake.

Anytime you have people coming together driven by a common goal, amazing things are bound to happen. Humanity is alive because of the very fact that we are able to collaborate with each other (among other things). Whether it is as simple as doing a small study group with your classmates, trading goods between countries, to donating millions of dollars to donate for relief efforts of countries in need, the result of humanity coming together is always positive. In music however, not only is the result of collaborating immediate, but so is the process. We are expressing ourselves through instruments and communicating at the speed of sound. I think it is this characteristic of music, this personal bond between musician and listener, that makes the experience rewarding and attractive.

The internet not only brought us emails, porn, and google but it also created a platform where people can go one step further and collaborate. This song is a small example of the beauty that comes from mixing music, ethernet cables, and people.

What do you get when you combine the danceable sounds of Australian duo Pnau and combine them with the synth-infused 80s sounds of Vancouver’s Shawn Ward, better known as FM Attack? The answer is this fantastic remix, which I can only describe as smooth and sultry. This is one of those interesting remixes that’s definitely got a great dance beat, but one thats probably best suited for a one-on-one up close and personal slow grind. With the plethora of in your face over the top remixes out there (which, don’t get me wrong, I love just as much as the next guy), it’s really refreshing to hear something like this that takes a song to a whole new and unimaginable place without blowing the roof off. If you liked this one, get excited because FM Attack is cranking away on some new remixes and is even reported to be releasing an album this spring.

This one-off remix samples the stuttered rhodes, vocals and strings of Toronto Violinist Final Fantasy’s track ‘The CN Tower Belongs to The Dead’ and mashes it up with the acapella ‘Work It Out’ from legendary MC, Q-Tip.

Many times two songs might go well together but often still sound like they are 2 different shoes walking at the same pace. Tor has delicately interwined these two tracks to produce a much unified result. I am completely blown away by this masterpiece of mash-up because not only is it technically flawless but it is a melodic machine of soft intstrumentals paired with soft digestable rhymes from ‘legenday’ MC, Q-Tip.

The track is a much laid back club mix than what we are used to here (see post below) but nonetheless it was a “solid” song. Personally, it took me a while to like the beat Guetta laid down but the presence of Kid Cudi facilitated this process.

DOSVEC, moniker of DJ Whatt, thought this song was a complete sausage fest and threw in Ciara to balance things out. The result of adding Ciara’s One Two Step to Memories is completely amazing… but sadly it doesn’t last for long. In the second half, we are back to square one with just Kid Cudi and no sign of Ciara. A complete tease if you ask me as another Ciara appearance would have taken this mash-up to another level. Nonetheless I enjoyed the beginning SO much I had to share it and ask what you guys think about it? Am I asking for too much? Comment Below.
