B I O G R A P H Y
Sonny Chua's music is characterised by its playfulness with styles and musical techniques. His music strives for the beauty of the simple and brevity and speaks in an accessible and lively language. As most of his music was primarily written as educational works for his students, these works were composed with attention to developing performance techniques and awareness of intelligent design.

Born on 2nd November 1967 in Penang, Malaysia, Chua grew up and was educated in Melbourne, Australia. He completed a Bachelor of Music degree at University of Melbourne with a focus on piano performance and music composition.

Chua's music is presently listed on all Australian examination syllabuses and is published by Allans Publishing and Midnight Editions. His piano works are regularly heard in competitions for young musicians and on the radio. He is currently President of the Association of Music Educators (Victoria) and Assistant Director of Music at Melbourne High School. Chua has an active interest in the research of boys and music education and is the director of the MHS Chorale, a voluntary based boys choir (members number over 60 students) at Melbourne High School. He is presently working in developing the repertoire for such choirs in schools and the community.

Chua has spoken on piano teaching and music education in workshops, festivals and conferences, including the 2003 Australasian Piano Pedagogy Conference, the 2004 Boys & Music symposium hosted by the Association of Music Educators (aMuse) the 2005 national conference of Australian Society of Music Education (ASME) and at the 2006 International Society of Music Education (ISME) world conference to be hosted in Kuala Lumpur. His papers on these topics have been published in conferences and educational publications.

Other than music, Chua's passions include Italian cuisine, pinot noir & rowing.

Program Outline:
Music Jamboree 2012 will commence on the morning of 21 August 2012 at the Hotel Continental’s Conference Room. The topics discussed will deal with pre-grade music education concepts, after which, teachers will be guided to develop a program for effective classroom learning.

These are the group activity skills that you can acquire:

Listening skills (intervals & pitch).
Rhythmic studies (body & limb movement, call & response).
Harmony (part-singing).
Organizing an ensemble performance involving a group of children.

It makes good sense to experience teaching the children immediately after acquiring ideas.

Note: During the 4-day jamboree, you will be required to apply the training in an active hands-on practical session with children. Please ensure that you are physically healthy. You are advised to wear light attire. T-shirts and pants (short / long) are encouraged.

Adam Gyorgy is regarded as one of the best Liszt players in the world, and the Liszt ambassador in his home country, Hungary. He is also known for his inspirational improvisations on his recitals. He performs his best repertoire at the Esplanade Concert Hall, including the famous Liszt Sonata in b minor, as well as virtuoso Liszt Transcriptions, etudes and Rhapsodies, and his own improvisations. In 2005, Adam was invited to join the Steinway community, a single honor that places him in the company of the greatest pianists of all time. This recognition led him to his debut at New York's famed Carnegie Hall in 2008, where he played to a full house. From Prodigy to Liszt ambassador, Adam Gyorgy enchants audiences everywhere he performs. His virtuosity and his sensitive interpretations have won him critical acclaim awards and built him a fan base worldwide.

Welcome to Adam György's World
"Some people say we have to break down the walls between classical and popular music. I would say we don't need to break them down, because there are no walls. My goal is to show that music is a language that can communicate our thoughts and emotions better than any other way in this world; it is simply music, with a message to deliver and with emotions to explain."

The story
When Adam was a young boy, he drew everything upside down. His worried parents took him to a doctor. The doctor decided there was something wrong with him, but was unable to diagnose the problem. His father, who was determined to understand why his son was different, watched Adam carefully.

One day he sat opposite Adam and asked him to draw a house. As the house began to take shape, Adam's father realized that although his son was drawing the house upside-down, he was able to see it right side up. At that moment he realized that Adam was drawing everything in a way that best displayed his drawing to the viewer.

This ability to see things from a different perspective was proof of Adam's natural inclination to perform, and revealed a thoughtful regard for how best to communicate with his audience.

Today, Adam communicates through his music in the same way as he drew as a child; with the understanding that the audience, the listener, is an active participant in bringing the music to life.

Studies
Adam was accepted to the Béla Bartók Conservatory as a prodigy in 1994, at the age of 12. He flourished under the tutelage of his piano teacher, Katalin Halmagyi, who continues to be his mentor and a key member of his creative team. In 1998 he won the National Youth Piano Competition, and two years later won Hungary's Pianist 2000 award at the age of 18. He was accepted at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest in 2000 and studied under Professors György Nador and Balazs Reti. He graduated in 2006 and is currently doing his doctoral studies at the Liszt Academy with a state scholarship.

A Rising Star
In 2002 Adam won the Vienna Classics Prize (Wiener-Klassik-Preis) with his outstanding interpretation of Haydn's Sonata in G major (No. 54). In 2003 he won the Special Prize at the San Remo International Piano Competition, and in 2004 he won all prizes (First Prize, Grand Prize and Special Prize) at the First International Chopin Piano Competition in Budapest. That same year, CNN World Report identified him as a “rising star.”

In 2005 Adam was invited to the Steinway Artist community, a signal honor that places him in the company of the greatest pianists of all time, including Vladimir Horowitz, Artur Rubinstein, Krystian Zimmerman.

On October 22, 2006 Adam debuted at New York's Carnegie Hall to great acclaim. He continues to tour the world, delighting audiences in the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia with his virtuosity, his charm, and his improvisations on well-known melodies, all of which invite comparisons to the incomparable Franz Liszt.

The Artis's Creative Team
A supportive and dedicated group stands behind Adam’s success. He credits his teachers Katalin Halmagyi, György Nador, and Balazs Reti with the artistic direction of his concerts. His management team, led by his brother Laszlo György, books his concerts and handles publicity.

The Sky is the limit
There is another story about the young Adam György that reveals his unique perspective on life. As a boy, he believed he could fly. He would run from room to room, picking up speed, before throwing himself into the air and crashing to the ground. His parents tried to explain to him that it was impossible to fly, but he did not believe them. In the end, though, he has proven that it is possible. He flies on the wings of music without limits and his only wish is to take his audience with him.

ABRSM International Young Composers' Competition

Marking the 120th Anniversary of ABRSM in 2009

The ABRSM International Young Composers' Competition is open to anyone under the age of 18 who has ever taken an ABRSM exam. It's a great chance for you to have your music heard by our experienced panel of expert judges and possibly even performed live in a world-renowned concert hall.

Styles
We're open to all types of music for this competition, meaning that your piece can be composed in any style. Your piece can be for any solo instrument or voice, with or without piano accompaniment, and it does have to be written down, as other musicians may perform the winning compositions in concert.

Categories
There are two age categories: 14 or under, and 15-18. We'll award prizes to the winners and runners-up in both categories, with the winners both receiving £1,000, and the runners-up £500 each.

Live Performances
All four prize-winning compositions will be considered for performance at the ABRSM 120th Anniversary Gala Concert at the Cadogan Hall in the summer of 2009. The winning pieces will also be sent to our editors, with the possibility of them being published by ABRSM in the future. Just imagine having your music played by thousands of others!

How do I enter the competition?

Guidelines
1. To be eligible for the competition, you have to compose a new piece of music that:

is written for a solo instrument or voice, with or without piano accompaniment
lasts at least one minute and no more than five minutes
conforms to the technical parameters for one of the eight grades (for guidance, compare your piece with others on the syllabus)

2. Your final score can either be handwritten or typeset using computer music software. Please do not send a recording of any kind, as the panel will only consider the written scores they receive.

3. Read all competition regulations.

4. Download and complete the entry form, ask your music teacher to sign it too (see below, regulation 5 for details), then send it in with your score by post to:

ABRSM International Young Composers' Competition Regulations

1. The ABRSM International Young Composers' Competition is open to any person aged 18 or under on 31 March 2009 who has entered for an ABRSM exam in any subject. The object of the Competition is to recognize, showcase and celebrate the creativity of young ABRSM exam candidates who have an interest in and a gift for composition.

2. There are two age groups for entries:

up to 14 years of age (entrants must be 14 or under on 31 March 2009);
aged 15 to 18 (entrants must be 18 or under on 31 March 2009 ).

3. The closing date for entries is 31 March 2009. Entries received after this date will not be considered.

4. Adjudication of the competition will take place in April 2009 and the winning entries will be announced on 1 May 2009.

5. Entrants must use the official entry form and the form must be submitted with the composition. The form must be counter-signed by a teacher, head of department or other musical authority who is prepared to warrant that the entry is the sole work of the composer. Verification of the entrant's eligibility for the competition will be made by ABRSM.

6. Compositions must be written for solo instrument/voice, with or without piano accompaniment. The duration must be at least one minute and no more than five minutes. Pieces must conform to the technical parameters of one of the eight grades appropriate to the instrument(s). For guidance on technical parameters entrants should refer to and study pieces listed in the ABRSM syllabuses.

7. Compositions submitted must a) have been written specifically for this competition; b) not have been entered for any other competition; c) not have been published previously; d) be owned solely by the composer. In the case of a vocal composition, if a text is used, permission to use a copyright text must be obtained in advance by the composer and evidence of permission being granted submitted with the entry.

8. Compositions must be submitted either handwritten, clearly and legibly, or set using computer music software. The submission must take the form of a printed or photocopied score. Copies submitted will not be returned. Only one submission per entrant will be allowed. The copyright in the composition will remain with the composer. If ABRSM offers to publish a winning entry it will offer the composer a publishing contract (see below, regulation 12).

9. There will be two awards in each age group. The winner in each group will receive £1,000 and the runner-up £500. The awards will be made to the composers of the works judged to demonstrate the most originality and technical ability.

10. In the event of the adjudicators deciding that no suitable entries were received for any of the prizes, then prizes may not be awarded.

11. The winning entries will be considered for performance at a Gala Concert in the summer of 2009 in London, though performance is not guaranteed. A recording of the concert may be made, in which case ABRSM will supply the composers with a copy of the recording of their pieces. By entering the competition, entrants grant first-performance rights to ABRSM. ABRSM will use its best endeavours to ensure that any performance promoted by ABRSM will be declared to the appropriate performing rights society.

12. The winning entries will also be considered for inclusion in future ABRSM publications, though publication is not guaranteed. ABRSM reserves the right to publish the winning entries and, by entering the Competition, entrants grant first-publication rights to ABRSM. If an entry is selected for publication ABRSM will offer a contract to the composer on standard industry terms. ABRSM may waive its first-publication right at anytime, on receipt of a written request from the composer.

13. All entrants must provide ABRSM with their name, address and other contact details. ABRSM will only ever use contact details for the purposes of administering this competition, and will not publish them or provide them to anyone without permission.

14. Winners will be contacted personally by email, telephone or by mail. If a winner is unable to be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made, ABRSM reserves the right to offer the prize to another entrant.

15. Entrants must supply full details as required above, and comply with all rules to be eligible for the prize. No responsibility is accepted for ineligible entries or entries made fraudulently.

16. ABRSM does not accept any responsibility for late or lost entries due to the postal service. Proof of sending is not proof of receipt.

17. The competition is not open to employees of, or the close relatives of employees of ABRSM and its associated companies or anyone else connected with the creation or administration of the Competition.

18. ABRSM's decision as to who the winners will be is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

19. ABRSM reserves the right to cancel this competition at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside of its control.

20. Winning entrants will be expected to take part in post-competition publicity if required.

21. Entrants will be deemed to have accepted these rules and to agree to be bound by them when entering this competition.

About the Clinician

A performer, composer, arranger, producer, adjudicator and practicing musician, Wilson Quah is a clinician for many music seminars and workshops namely, Improvisation Workshop, Music Camp, Jazz Clinics, etc. He majored in Jazz Studies at the Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA. As a music educator, he specializes in jazz studies (composition, arranging, performance), improvisation, modern theory and harmony. Besides being a clinician, Wilson has also composed and produced movie and drama soundtracks, TV and radio commercials. On top of that, he is also an author, writer and editor of numerous music publications. As a performing musician, he currently heads a jazz band incorporating a trio and a vocalist. His group "Tonal Alchemy" was the opening act for the inaugural First Penang Island Jazz Festival 2004 featuring great musicians from all over the world.

In 2005 till 2007, Wilson led a group of jazz enthusiasts on a workshop tour in conjunction of the Penang Island Jazz Festival. In the workshop tour, participants were guided through the history and evolution of the various styles that jazz has become till present day. In that same year, the Areca Jazz Ensemble was founded under the direction and guidance of Wilson Quah as their conductor, composer and arranger. The Areca Jazz Ensemble is a Big Band comprising of young children performing on various big band orchestral instruments. The Areca Jazz Ensemble was formed to provide children with the opportunity to realise their passion to perform. Since 2005, under the direction and guidance of Wilson Quah, the Areca Jazz Ensemble was selected as the opening act for the Penang Island Jazz Festival.

Who can take part in this program?
This special program is for kids with or without any music knowledge or musical experience. It is open to all to experience the joy of music.

How can it help young kids?
• Helps identify some dysfunctions like motor-skill problems, hearing problems (tone deaf), rhythmic coordination problems (rhythm blind).
• Improve total body and limbs coordination.
• Active participation in activities to build self-esteem/confidence.

How long is the program?
It is a 2-hour program (9:00AM – 11:00AM or 3:00PM – 5:00PM) that engages young kids in various musical activities.

Are observers allowed?
Yes, as long as they are parents of your students and teachers of your school, and there has to be enough space to accommodate everyone.

What to bring?
Writing utensils: colour pencils or crayons, pencils, eraser, sharpener, etc.

Variations of chord progressions:

Primary chords: I, IV & V7
Secondary chords: IIm, IIIm, VIm & VIIdim

Chord: I & V7
This is the simplest chord progression to use. Chord I to V7 and V7 to I (Perfect Cadence) will suit any song composed using the notes C to G.

Chord: I, IV & V7
These form the primary chords that are diatonic to all major scales. Adding Chord IV will add more harmony to the tune.

Chord: I, IIm & V7
The use of IIm (minor) introduces the sound of a minor chord. The tonality of a minor chord offers a different soundscape from the major and dominant 7th sounds above. From here on, the harmony starts to get more interesting by exploring sounds from other chords.

Chord: I, IIm, IIIm & V7
Chord IIIm is introduced here. This chord has its limitations and may not sound that good in certain circumstances.

Chord: I, IIm, IIIm, IV, V7 & Vim
Having more chords to use allows more exploration of chords. A mix of primary and secondary chords allows interesting harmony to be created for a melody. The samples below are just some ideas that are possible. Explore the given chords and create a chord progression that you like.

Of course, there are other chords possible but diatonic chords to the scale are the safest to use especially in a situation like the WYOM project, where you have to add chords to the 8-bar compositions that your students have created to perform them.

The Malaysia Baptist Theological Seminary is pleased to announce a “Concert of Sacred Music with Choir and Orchestra” by the 120-strong Choir and Pipe and String Orchestra of the Kowloon Baptist Church, HongKong on 17 August 2008 at 8:00 pm. The venue is Penang Christian Centre, 1 Jalan Khaw Sim Bee.

The concert team formed by music professor was originally scheduled to perform in Beijing, but the trip was cancelled by the authorities (probably due to the Olympics). As a result, at the last minute, the team decided to come to Malaysia instead. They will be performing in Kuala Lumpur on the 15th and 16th August, before coming to Penang. We apologise for this short notice.

We enclose herewith the flyer of the concert (MusicalNIte4.pdf). Please come and join us and invite your friends to attend. Admission is free. Let us together to hear the choir and orchestra praising and glorifying God and proclaiming God’s love with their beautiful voices and music. 本院谨订于二零零八年八月十七日（星期日），晚上八时正假槟城基督徒中心（Penang Christian Centre, 1, Jalan Khaw Sim Bee）举行「圣乐交响乐晚会」。「香港九龙城浸信会」的一百廿人诗班及交响乐队将为大家演出；他们以优雅的歌声及美妙的旋律来述说神的尊贵与荣美！请勿错过！

原本这支由音乐专业人士组成的队伍是去北京演出的，不过临时被通知取消行程（也许是奥运的缘故）。与其白白的浪费一番心血练习，再加上他们都已经请了假；于是领队当机立断：不如前来我国！故此，本月十五及十六日，他们将会在吉隆坡演出，紧接下来就莅临槟城。基于临时的安排，在宣传上也显得相当仓促，见谅！

Activity:
1) Students have to memorize the song first.
2) Form a big circle. Sit down with legs crossed.
3) Lift left hand slightly above left leg, with palms upwards.
4) Right hand will clap the 6-beat rhythm, in anti-clockwise direction.

Beat 1: Right hand claps own left palm
Beat 2: Right hand claps own left leg
Beat 3: Right hand claps own right leg
Beat 4: Right hand claps friend's left palm, hit upwards
Beat 5: Right hand claps friend's left palm, hit downwards
Beat 6: Right hand claps friend's left palm, hit downwards

5) To add variety, this song can go from slow to fast. It helps to build the tempo sense from slow to fast.
