It’s that time of year again…time to submit requests to attend the NACADA Annual Conference Oct. 4-7, 2026 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Last year, we received approval after a short wait at Del Mar College (DMC)! We acknowledge that it is a privilege to attend the conference and always take full advantage of the opportunity.

DMC is a community college with three campus sites and a decentralized and shared advising structure. How could we foster a sense of community among advisors attending the Annual Conference?

The purpose of this article is twofold: 1) to glean insights into how the DMC advising community coalesced prior to the conference; and 2) to inspire ideas that can be replicated on your campus. Here are the steps we are taking—again—to build our community!

1. Start Early: February – March

We applied and reached out for approval from our direct supervisors and professional development bodies to secure funds for attending the conference.

2. Connection Across Campus Sites: May

We sent out a scheduling poll to determine the best time to meet as a collective group. Our connection went beyond DMC colleagues, extending to our partners who traveled with us. Our conversations were about team building and bonding prior to the NACADA Conference.

3. Shared Knowledge: June – September

We offered travel tips, T-shirts and more. We met monthly to review our travel requests, plan potential group outings, offer travel tips, and design DMC Advising T-shirts [School Spirit Day] (with the theme of the conference). We were excited to show our school spirit!

4. Communication & Community: June – September

a. Communication: We focused on improving how we stayed connected. Rather than flooding inboxes with emails (no more “reply all”!), we created a group chat to share updates and changes quickly and efficiently.

b. Community: Before the conference, we hosted a get-together so our Significant Others (“The S.O.’s”) could connect. The evening included team-building activities, dinner, and fellowship.

5. Return on Investment – Back on Campus: November

To demonstrate appreciation to our institution, we scheduled a debrief with college leaders, our supervisors, and advising colleagues who were unable to attend Annual Conference. We shared key concepts and promising practices in hopes that others could benefit from the insights gained during the conference.

One of the best-kept secrets of the NACADA Annual Conference? Volunteering. Not only does it deepen your experience, but it also connects you with colleagues from all over the country—and helps make the event run smoothly for everyone. As co-chairs of the Volunteer & Evaluation Committee for the 2025 NACADA Annual Conference in Las Vegas, we’re here to tell you: there’s no better way to get involved.

Meet Your Volunteer Co-Chairs

Tayler Mesnard began her higher education career over a decade ago, starting in Admissions before moving into Academic Advising. She now serves as the Assistant Director of Advising, Curriculum and Faculty Relations at Nevada State University. “My own advisor changed my life,” Tayler says. “Now I get to be that person for others.” She co-chaired a committee for the 2023 Region 8/9/10 Conference and jumped at the chance to help plan this year’s Annual. “Helping shape this kind of inclusive, meaningful experience is what NACADA is all about.”

Joining her is Hayley Harned, Assistant Director of the Paul and Lynn Ann Vogel Master of Accountancy and Integrated Program at the University of Missouri. With roots in residential life and a strong Student Affairs foundation, Hayley has been advising since 2018, working at institutions in Montana, Texas, and now Missouri. Her journey with NACADA began in 2021 and has since blossomed into multiple leadership roles, including her current tenure as a 2024–2026 Emerging Leader and Mentor Chair for Region 7. “Planning this conference has been a dream of mine,” Hayley says. “It aligns perfectly with my love of event planning, community-building, and helping others find their place in NACADA.”

Why Las Vegas? Why Now?

This year’s conference isn’t just another event—it’s an experience. “It’s Vegas! It’s Annual!” Harned says. “There’s so much happening, and it’s right before Halloween.” With spacious, modern venues and a world-class city just steps away, Las Vegas is the perfect place to connect, reflect, and recharge.

And if you think Las Vegas is just the Strip, think again. “As a local,” Tayler adds, “I can tell you there’s so much more—hiking trails, unique museums, incredible food, and a welcoming community.” Plus, our planning team has curated an incredible lineup of sessions, socials, and networking opportunities to make this year truly special.

How to Get the Most Out of Your NACADA Experience

Both Harned and Tayler agree: volunteering is the best way to dive in. Whether you’re helping greet attendees, counting session participants, or supporting presenters, volunteering helps you feel like part of something bigger. “When I volunteered,” Tayler says, “I met amazing people and felt like a real part of the NACADA community.”

Other tips? “Introduce yourself,” Harned encourages. “Seek out folks from schools you haven’t connected with before.” Tayler adds, “Attend sessions outside your typical scope—you never know what will inspire your next big idea.”

NACADA is built by advisors, for advisors—and the more you give, the more you’ll gain. Whether you’re new to the field or a seasoned pro, we hope you’ll join us in Las Vegas, say hello, and maybe even sign up to volunteer. We promise it’ll be worth it.

Like many of us, Beth Truax Armstrong didn’t originally plan to build a career in academic advising. She started in the field as a graduate assistant and loved the work, but she remained open to other paths within education. After grad school, she took a full-time role as an academic advisor in the College of Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. She enjoyed every moment of it—but she still wasn’t sure advising would be her forever space.

Then life took her on a cross-country move, which gave her the opportunity to take a career break. That pause gave her unexpected clarity: she missed advising—deeply. She realized that even though she could explore a different professional direction, she didn’t want to. Advising wasn’t just a job—it had become a core part of who she is.

Fast forward to today, and she is now an academic advisor at the University of California, Santa Cruz with 12 years of experience in the field. She honestly can’t imagine doing anything else. That’s why she’s so excited to serve as the Preconference Workshop Chair for the 2025 NACADA Annual Conference in Las Vegas.

When she saw that the next conference was happening in Vegas, it immediately felt like the right fit. Most airports offer affordable, direct flights, making it an accessible location for her advising friends and colleagues across the country. It’s a destination that’s easy to get to—but packed with unique experiences once you arrive.

Of course, the conference itself is always a highlight: thought-provoking sessions, inspiring speakers, networking opportunities, and meaningful connections with other advising professionals. But let’s talk about a few of her personal Vegas favorites to add to your itinerary:

Dominique Ansel Patisserie inside Caesars Palace – Yes, it’s home of the famous cronut, but the DKA is the true gem. It’s one of the only places outside of NYC where you can taste his incredible pastries.

The Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens – Right next door, and completely stunning. A perfect mid-conference break to refresh and take in the beauty.

The Wynn’s All-You-Can-Eat Brunch Buffet – Need I say more?

As you prepare for the conference, here’s Beth’s pro tip: Bring a highlighter, pen, and notepad. When the session schedule drops, it can feel overwhelming—so many amazing options, all happening at once! Having your top picks marked ahead of time will help you stay organized and ensure you don’t miss something exciting.

Whether you’re brand new to NACADA or a seasoned attendee, this year’s conference in Las Vegas promises something special. Come for the learning, stay for the connections—and maybe grab a cronut along the way.

Beth can’t wait to see you there!

What started as a way to help fellow students grew into a full-fledged passion and profession. Today, Alejandra merges their love for data and student support in their role, helping others navigate the college experience just as they once did.

In recent years, Alejandra has found NACADA to be a foundational resource in their professional development. “NACADA has provided the best practices and tools that have shaped the way I advise,” they shared with the planning committee. Inspired by the impact past conferences had on their own journey, Alejandra jumped at the opportunity to join the 2025 Annual Conference planning team in Las Vegas.

“For me, conferences are about connection, energy, and renewal,” they noted. “So what better way to fill my cup than to help create that experience for others from the very beginning?”

Alejandra says the enthusiasm and camaraderie of the planning team have sparked a fresh sense of excitement for the upcoming academic year. They are confident that same feeling will ripple throughout the conference, energizing advisors from every corner of the field.

Their advice to future attendees? “Even if you’re not sure a session is for you—attend anyway! You might learn something new, meet a future collaborator, or walk away with ideas to share with a colleague back home.” And just as importantly, Alejandra encourages attendees to take breaks when needed. “Find a comfy chair, take a deep breath, and just take it all in.”

NACADA 2025 promises connection, inspiration, and a space to grow—and Alejandra Garibay is proud to be part of bringing that vision to life.

With the 2025 NACADA Annual Conference just around the corner, we’re excited to continue spotlighting members of the incredible planning committee working behind the scenes to bring this year’s event to life in Las Vegas! From seasoned advisors to dedicated student support professionals, this team brings energy, insight, and heart to every detail of the conference experience. Today, we’re proud to introduce two of them: Tashauna Stewart and Satyndahl Gilreath.

Tashauna Stewart – Senior Academic Advisor, Lee Business School, UNLV

Tashauna’s advising journey began just four years ago, shortly after completing graduate school. With a background in residential life, she made the transition to academic advising to explore new avenues of student support—and she hasn’t looked back since. Now a Senior Academic Advisor at UNLV’s Lee Business School, she also teaches first-year seminar courses for business students and is deeply involved in campus initiatives, including a grant-supported advisor wellness program through the Stupski Foundation.

“NACADA has played such a meaningful role in my development,” Tashauna shares. “After attending multiple conferences as a participant and panelist, I wanted to be part of creating that same kind of transformative experience for others.” As a local to Las Vegas, she’s also excited to offer insider recommendations—like indulging in the Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace, which she rates as a must-visit!

Satyndahl Gilreath – Student Support Specialist, American River College

Satyndahl’s journey began as a student employee at American River College’s Disability Services & Programs. That first role sparked a career in higher education that has grown over the past 15 years, eventually leading her to her current role as a Student Support Specialist. Her dedication to helping students navigate complex systems and feel seen has made a lasting impact on her campus—and now, she brings that same passion to the NACADA conference planning team.

“I love helping others be prepared,” Satyndahl says. “Planning a conference like this takes time, creativity, and intentionality—and I’m excited to give back to a professional community that has helped me grow.”

Why You Should Be Excited About NACADA Las Vegas

From exciting session lineups to the electric energy of the host city, there’s no shortage of reasons to look forward to NACADA 2025. “Because it’s VEGAS, BABY!” laughs Tashauna. “It’s the perfect mix of professional development and vibrant atmosphere.” Satyndahl adds, “The weather will be beautiful, and the opportunities to connect are endless.”

Tips for Getting the Most from Your Conference Experience

Both planners agree: what you put into the conference is what you’ll get out of it.

Tashauna encourages attendees to diversify the sessions they attend—not just the ones tied to their current role, but those that challenge or stretch them. “You never know what nuggets you’ll take away or who you’ll connect with.” She also recommends engaging in wellness and social events, like yoga sessions or coordinated dinner groups.

Satyndahl’s advice? Get connected. Whether it’s by attending a workshop, joining a pre-conference event, or volunteering, “there are so many ways to meet people. You’ll walk away grateful for the experience.”

With professionals like Tashauna and Satyndahl guiding the way, this year’s conference is sure to be unforgettable. Get ready for inspiration, connection, and plenty of Vegas flair!

Take Julia Odom, for example. With more than two decades of experience as a Registrar, Julia has built deep, collaborative relationships with professional and faculty advisors throughout her career. Before stepping into her current role as Managing Director of Business, Exploratory, and Information/Data and Society advising teams at San José State University, she oversaw both the Registrar’s Office and the advising team. It was an uncommon pairing—but a powerful one—grounded in her commitment to understanding curriculum and improving advising systems. After attending the Region 9 conference in 2023, Julia knew she wanted to give back by joining this year’s planning committee, meet more professionals in the field, and contribute to creating a welcoming space for new and returning attendees alike.

For Wakaba Futamura, the journey into advising came from a different but equally meaningful path. With 12 years of experience as a French professor at five different institutions, Wakaba often found her most impactful moments came not during lectures, but in one-on-one office hour conversations with students. Those connections ultimately led her to pursue a full-time advising role in 2022 at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she now offers holistic guidance and mentorship to her students. After volunteering at multiple regional NACADA conferences, she saw joining the planning committee as a natural next step—and a valuable opportunity to build deeper connections while helping shape an enriching conference experience.

So why should you be excited about NACADA Las Vegas?

This conference offers something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for sessions to spark innovation, activities to recharge your passion, or moments to simply connect with peers, this is the place to be. Las Vegas provides an accessible, vibrant location with world-class food, entertainment, and cultural experiences. Inside the conference, you’ll find inspiring keynotes, interactive sessions, wellness and networking events, and a welcoming community eager to share ideas and support your growth.

Our advice for first-time or returning attendees?

As Julia recommends, explore beyond what’s familiar. Attend sessions that align with your current work, but also challenge yourself to sit in on those that stretch your perspective. Take time to recharge—whether that’s a quiet moment outside or an energizing group activity.

Wakaba suggests volunteering as a way to fully immerse yourself. Supporting presenters, helping with logistics, or welcoming fellow attendees opens up new connections and helps you see the collaborative spirit that powers NACADA. Ultimately, balancing participation with self-care—and allowing space for curiosity—will ensure you leave the conference with new insights, lasting connections, and renewed motivation.

We can’t wait to see you in Las Vegas and help make your NACADA experience unforgettable!

Derek Furukawa’s journey in academic advising began in 2000 as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Maryland, College Park. Since then, Derek has worked with diverse student populations across Maryland, Nevada, and now Hawaiʻi, where he serves as Director of the Advising Center for the College of Arts, Languages & Letters at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. With over 20 years of NACADA membership and experience planning events at every level—state, regional, and institutional—Derek knew he could bring helpful insight to this year’s planning committee, especially since Las Vegas was once his own professional home.

She currently serves as the Director of Undergraduate Programs at the University of California, Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business, where she leads strategic initiatives that support first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students in achieving academic and professional success.

Maria’s career in academic advising began in Kansas and moved to California where she has held leadership roles across institutions in both public and private settings. Known for her strengths-based and holistic approach, she has led efforts in curriculum development, peer advising, first-year experience programs, and alumni engagement. A long-time NACADA member (and R9 Chair) Maria brings valuable perspective to the planning committee, particularly in areas related to inclusive advising practices and program innovation. This is a first time assisting with NACADA Annual Conference and is excited to support the work of the amazing conference committee.

So, what makes this year’s Las Vegas conference special?
For one, Las Vegas itself is a natural draw. With its vibrant atmosphere, diverse food scene, and one-of-a-kind attractions like the Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, there’s something here for everyone. But more importantly, this conference is packed with opportunities to connect, reflect, and grow. From innovative sessions and pre-conference workshops to wellness events and networking socials, the programming is designed to meet advisors where they are and help them take the next step forward—whatever that may be.

If you’re joining us in Vegas, we encourage you to fully immerse yourself in the NACADA experience. Review the schedule in advance, build in time to explore unexpected sessions, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone—even introverts (like Derek!) find community here when they take that first step. Attend a session that challenges your assumptions, and be open to meeting colleagues from across the advising spectrum.

And when the conference ends? Follow up. Send that email. Make that connection. Reflect on what you’ve learned and how it can shape your own advising practice.

This year’s conference is more than an event—it’s a chance to strengthen the advising community we all care so deeply about. We hope to see you there!

Are you excited for the NACADA conference? Our planning committee definitely is! Stay tuned as we spotlight each subcommittee in the coming weeks. Whether you’re a first-time attendee or a NACADA conference veteran, our committee’s tips and insights will help you get the most out of your experience in Las Vegas!

For those of us in academic advising, NACADA has always been more than just a professional association—it’s a vibrant community that inspires growth, collaboration, and connection. That’s why we’re thrilled to help bring the 2025 NACADA Annual Conference to life in the dynamic city of Las Vegas. As your co-chairs and planning team members, we wanted to share a bit about our advising journeys and why this event is so meaningful to us.

Each of us came into advising from different backgrounds. Maria Aladjova, a former student-athlete who earned her BA in Psychology while playing volleyball for UNLV, transitioned into advising after completing a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Now a Senior Academic Advisor pursuing a PhD in Counselor Education, Maria has found NACADA to be a key part of her professional development – attending, presenting, and co-chairing both regional and now the annual conference.

For Kevin McVay, the journey into advising began during a graduate school assignment in 2017 that encouraged him to explore an unfamiliar area in higher education. That spark led to an internship, then a full-time advisor role, and eventually promotions to RPC (Retention, Progression, & Completion) Coordinator and Assistant Director of Student Success within UNLV’s College of Sciences. His early NACADA experiences, like volunteering at the reception desk, gave him the confidence to get more involved over time.

Janelle Yasukochi started her career in advising as an Administrative Assistant in UNLV’s Greenspun College of Urban Affairs Advising Center. She worked in various roles as she progressed in the field of advising, which includes Senior Advisor/RPC Coordinator, Academic Advising Coordinator and currently the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Advising Practice. Her involvement in NACADA has opened the door to many exciting opportunities, which now includes co-leading the annual conference.

Why are we excited about the 2025 NACADA Annual Conference and why should you be?
Because this conference is built on the same sense of connection and energy that first drew us into the NACADA community. From pre-conference workshops and concurrent sessions to wellness events and social activities, we’re designing an experience that offers something for everyone. Whether you’re new to advising or a seasoned professional, there’s value to be found in every corner of this conference—and in every conversation.

Las Vegas offers the perfect backdrop, with a mix of world-class entertainment, food, and outdoor activities to complement the professional learning. And the cooler fall weather means you’ll be able to explore it all comfortably!

Our biggest piece of advice for attendees? Start small and stay curious. Attend a session outside your comfort zone. Strike up a conversation with someone new. Volunteer. Ask questions. Reflect. You’ll get out what you put in—and likely much more.

We can’t wait to welcome you to Las Vegas and share in an unforgettable NACADA experience together.

Before becoming a world-famous entertainment destination, Las Vegas was a natural desert oasis known for its springs and meadows—hence its Spanish name, “The Meadows.” It served as an important stop for Native American tribes and 19th-century travelers [1]. The city officially began in 1905 as a railroad stop and was incorporated in 1911 [2]. A major turning point came in the 1930s with the construction of the Hoover Dam, which brought an influx of workers and introduced electricity to the area, setting the stage for the city’s future as a neon-lit metropolis [3].

Las Vegas began to transform in the 1940s with the development of the Las Vegas Strip. The city quickly became synonymous with luxury casinos, lavish hotels, and iconic entertainers such as Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley [4]. Today, Las Vegas is a dynamic cultural center offering diverse attractions far beyond gambling, including fine dining, the arts, outdoor activities, and professional sports. [5]

What to Expect in October 2025
By the time NACADA attendees arrive in October 2025, the city will be buzzing with its usual fall energy. Expect pleasant weather—sunny skies, cooler temps (highs in the 70s °F/20s °C) [6], and ideal conditions for exploring the city on foot. While you’re immersing yourself in NACADA sessions, you’ll be doing so in the grand Caesars Forum Conference Center nestled inside the legendary Caesars Palace resort. This Roman-inspired landmark offers a true Las Vegas spectacle: marble colonnades, ornate statues, and expansive event spaces with cutting-edge audio/visual amenities—plus easy navigation between conference sessions [7]. So pack your walking shoes, sunscreen, your curiosity, and your appetite—for learning and for food. The city’s rich past and ever-evolving present make it the perfect place to connect, grow, and be inspired at the 2025 NACADA Annual Conference.

Haven’t registered for the conference yet? We highly encourage you to do so by 9/11/25 to get the early bird fee. To access the hotel booking link, you must first register for the conference. These rooms may sell out before the cut off date of Friday, 10/3/25.
