the nasa conspiracies

2011-02-14T12:36:00.000-08:00

Tomorrow morning, from 1AM to 4AM Central Time (11PM to 2AM West Coast Time tonight), I’ll be on Coast to Coast discussing my latest book, The NASA Conspiracies. Here’s the relevant page where you can find more about the show, and below is the publisher’s (New Page Books) background data on the book:

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration—NASA—was established on July 29, 1958. Ever since that day, NASA has been
at the forefront of efforts to explore outerspace, resulting in the Apollo missions to the moon, the Skylab space-station, and today’s space shuttle.

But behind the open face of NASA, there is a much more mysterious world. NASA has been linked to a wealth of high-level cover-ups, including:

• Claims that the Apollo moon landings of 1969 to 1972 were faked as part of an effort to demonstrate military and technological superiority over the former Soviet Union;
• NASA’s role in hiding the truth about the controversial face on Mars—which many believe to be a carved structure, created in the remote past by long-extinct, indigenous Martians;
• Comments from a NASA astronaut on the Roswell, New Mexico, incident of July 1947;
• Deep Throat-like NASA sources that have attempted to blow the lid on NASA’s most guarded secrets concerning the U.S. Government’s interactions with aliens.

The NASA Conspiracies throws open all the doors that the Space Agency has kept closed for so long.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Madison Bumgarner stood behind the mound as the delay during Game 4 of the World Series lengthened. First, ballpark officials had to wait for TV to begin "God Bless America." Then, after an elongated rendition, troops were honored behind home plate.

Bumgarner took off his glove and clapped as the ceremonies ended. The San Francisco lefthander was six shutout innings into the most important start of his young life and it was proof that nothing was derailing the 21-year-old rookie's night.

He allowed a Texas runner to reach second base in the seventh inning for the first time Sunday, but stranded him there, merely a prelude to San Francisco's 4-0 victory at Rangers Ballpark.

All Bumgarner did was pitch the game of his life. Now, these Giants are one win away from their first world championship since 1954, when they played at the Polo Grounds in New York. They have shut out the overpowering Rangers offense, the one that dethroned the defending champion Yankees, twice in four games.

On Monday, San Francisco will send its ace, Tim Lincecum, to the mound in Game 5, seeking the Series clincher. He will be opposed by Cliff Lee, the Texas ace acquired midseason to inject more than hope into the only franchise that had yet to win a postseason series. Now, Lee must win to prolong the ride.

History is against Texas. Of the 42 times a team has gone up by three games to one in the World Series, it has won 37 of those series.

It's the seventh straight World Series that has been three games to one or complete after Game 4. Three of those series ended in sweeps. Two ended in five games, and one - the Phillies-Yankees series in 2009 - ended in six.

And considering the way the Giants' pitching has stymied the Rangers, the odds look even longer. Bumgarner, their fourth starter, pitched eight scoreless innings to win Game 4.

All the more impressive is this: Bumgarner was the fifth-youngest pitcher to start a World Series game, and the youngest since 1981. With a rookie catcher, Buster Posey, the two combined to form the first rookie battery to start a World Series game since Game 1 of the 1947 Series, when the Yankees started Spec Shea and Yogi Berra.

Bumgarner, as he was in the first two rounds of the postseason, was remarkable. In this rotation of homegrown pitchers, the youngest and least experienced one bested the rest. Game 4s can be messy. Most of the time, each team is trotting out its least-trusted starter.

Texas had the option of throwing its best pitcher, Lee, on short rest but decided against it. Instead, Tommy Hunter started.

The results were predictable. During the regular season, Hunter induced swinging strikes on just 5.8 percent of his pitches (11th lowest among pitchers with at least 120 innings). Opposing hitters made contact on 87.2 percent of the pitches Hunter threw in 2010 (ninth highest among pitchers with at least 120 innings).

He is, for a lack of a better comparison, a younger Kyle Kendrick. Hunter did not induce a swing and a miss by a Giants' batter until the 79th pitch he threw, an 88-m.p.h. fastball to San Francisco rightfielder Nate Schierholtz.

Most of Hunter's pitches were flat and struck hard by San Fransciso hitters. He needed 21, 23 and 28 pitches to navigate the first three innings, respectively. In the second, he should have been through the inning easily but a blown call at first base by umpire Jeff Kellogg on a double play forced Hunter to throw 11 more pitches. He was bailed out only by a spectacular diving catch in center by Josh Hamilton.

But an inning later, Aubrey Huff turned on a flat cutter and crushed it for a two-run home run. The rookie pitcher had all he needed. The Giants can become world champions Monday night in Texas.

Madison Bumgarner rookie 21 years old leads Giants to 4-0 shut out of Rangers

8 shut out innings 2nd youngest pitcher in history to give the san francisco giants a 4-0 shut out victory to give the giants a 3 games to 1 lead

(10-31) 20:57 PST Arlington, TEXAS -- The Texas Rangers might demand a birth certificate. Suuuure, he's 21. Suuuure this is his first postseason. Madison Bumgarner looks as if he has done this a thousand times before.

But no, this was Bumgarner's first World Series start, and even if the Rangers doubt his age, they cannot question his stuff, not after he pitched the Giants to the brink of a championship in Game 4 Sunday night.

In a 4-0 victory, the Giants' second shutout of the Series, Bumgarner held Texas to three hits in eight innings, matching the best start of his career. He threw eight shutout innings, the first pitcher to do so in the Series since St. Louis' Chris Carpenter in Game 3 in 2006 against Detroit.

Furthermore, the 21-year-old became the fourth-youngest starter to win in the World Series. His night, and perhaps his rookie season, ended with a looking strikeout of Game 3 hitting star Mitch Moreland. Brian Wilson pitched the ninth.

Bumgarner had some power to back him up from an offense that has outhomered Texas' highly regarded mashers 6-2. Aubrey Huff and Buster Posey each hit his first postseason homer, Huff with one aboard. In between, Andres Torres doubled home Edgar Renteria in the seventh, when each had his third hit of the game.

The Giants secured the one win they truly needed in the three games at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and lead the Series three games to one. Since the American and National Leagues began knocking heads in 1903, 35 of the 41 teams to take a 3-1 lead captured the title.

The Giants can celebrate San Francisco's first Series win on this field tonight in the Game 1 rematch pitting Tim Lincecum and Cliff Lee. Even if the Rangers get the Series back to AT&T Park, the Giants would have two more chances to win the decisive game.

Pitching without hesitation or wasted effort, Bumgarner suffocated a good Texas lineup with all his pitches working. He did not allow a runner to reach second base until the seventh inning and ended two mini-rallies with double plays.

Bumgarner also struck out Vlad Guerrero three times, twice retiring him on changeups that drew awful, half-hearted swings.

The Giants forced Texas starter Tommy Hunter to throw 83 pitches in four innings, but their take was only two runs.

They scored in the third when Torres hit a leadoff double, a ball that hit first base, and Huff, the designated hitter, hit a two-run, two-area-code drive down the right-field line well over the fence, giving the Giants their first lead in Texas, 2-0.

Huff went deep in his 51st postseason at-bat. Tack on the end of the regular season and his drought had totaled 76 at-bats.

Torres hit his RBI double in the seventh against Darren Oliver. Sidewinder Darren O'Day, who got Posey to ground out in a key situation in Game 3, surrendered the rookie catcher's homer in the eighth, a high fly that would not stop carrying until it reached the grassy knoll in center field.

With eight strikeouts in nine Series at-bats, Pat Burrell found himself on the bench for Game 4, replaced by Nate Schierholtz. Also, Travis Ishikawa played first base with Huff the DH, a role he knew well in the American League.

Ishikawa and Schierholtz had not started together since July 21 and totaled 15 at-bats off the bench in the first 13 postseason games. Now, each was making his first start in the World Series.

Manager Bruce Bochy said he decided on Ishikawa at first after Game 3 and told him. He slept on the Burrell decision and did not write Schierholtz into the lineup until Sunday.

"I got excited," Ishikawa said. "When I first heard, I thought it was great. It wasn't until I got to the field today that it really hit me this was a World Series game and I'll be living out every childhood fantasy that a kid has of playing major-league baseball. It'll be tough to control my excitement. I've got to find a way to do it."

Freddy Sanchez went hitless at the plate but contributed in the field.

He played highlight-reel bingo in the second inning, which ended when he soared into the air to catch Jeff Francoeur's scorching liner. Sanchez was lurching backward, too, and did a reverse somersault as he landed.

In fact, Sanchez could have produced a two-volume set of highlights in this game. He nearly made a fantastic play to prevent Texas' first hit, a Michael Young grounder. When Bumgarner deflected Josh Hamilton's subsequent grounder to Sanchez, he grabbed it and deftly tagged Young going by.

After Bumgarner struck out Guerrero with a changeup, Sanchez took a short-hopped throw from Buster Posey and tagged Hamilton on steal attempt.

keep Rangers' World Series hopes alive
11:00 PM CDT on Sunday, October 31, 2010

By GERRY FRALEY / The Dallas Morning News
gfraley@dallasnews.com
ARLINGTON – Cliff Lee, the Rangers' ace lefthander, needs help in his crusade for personal redemption when he goes against San Francisco in Game Five of the World Series tonight.

His infielders must make plays.

San Francisco spanked Lee in the Series opener. He lost for the first time in eight career post-season decisions, allowing seven runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Lee on Sunday said there were no alibis to explain his sub-par performance. Whether it was hitting Andres Torres with a 0-2 fastball or giving Freddy Sanchez the gift of two fastballs over the heart of the plate, Lee insisted he made too many bad pitches.

"I made mistakes," Lee said. "Good hitters capitalize on that, and that's what they did."

Manager Ron Washington suggested there was more to it than Lee missing his target. Washington believes a 32-pitch third inning took a toll on Lee.

The inning started when third baseman Michael Young gave the Giants an extra out by misplaying a grounder to his left. Young also could not get a glove on Sanchez’ smash, which went for a run-scoring double. The Giants scored twice in the inning to tie the game at 2 and also put Lee’s pitch total out of whack.

"The third inning was a big inning in that we didn't make a couple plays," Washington said. "He (Lee) ended up extending himself in that inning.

"Cliff Lee is a thoroughbred. It's charge, charge, charge. To throw 32 pitches ... I just think it took a lot out of him."

Since the loss, Lee has followed his normal routine. Lee changed nothing, because he saw no reason to change.

If the Giants had beaten him at his best, Lee said, he would have made a wholesale change in approach for the rematch. Knowing that he hurt himself with bad pitches helped in the preparation, Lee said. Even Giants manager Bruce Bochy repeated that Lee "probably wasn't on top of his game" in the opener.

"I was throwing balls over the middle of the plate," Lee said. "They did a really good job swinging the bat, working the count and getting themselves in good positions to hit. That’s what happens, especially at this level."

Lee inadvertently gave San Francisco’s hitters a rallying point by saying before the series that the Giants were "dangerous because they’ve got really good pitching. ... I think you can give more credit to the pitching." Lee said he was not trying to belittle the lineup, which was good enough to handle his mistake pitches.

"I get a chance to redeem myself against a team that put it to me pretty good last time," Lee said. "I’m looking forward to it."

It is unlikely Lee will start again in the Series. It’s now-or-never time for him and the Rangers.

The Giants won in Texas, 4-0, ending a three game home park advantage in the series. More importantly, with this win, they go up 3-1 in the best of seven and only need to win one of the remaining three games to win the World Series.

Aubrey Huff's two-run shot off Tommy Hunter in the third inning put the Giants ahead to stay early in the game, and Andres Torres (double) and Buster Posey (homer) accounted for the other runs.

Even though Tommy Hunter kept the Giants off the board in the fourth, he was replaced by righty reliever Alexi Ogando for the top of the fifth, as Ron Washington didn't want to give up any more hard-hit balls than he had to. And Ogando was able to do the job, needing just ten pitches to set the Giants down 1-2-3. Andres Torres started off with a weak fly out. Freddy Sanchez followed with a fly out of his own. And Aubrey Huff wrapped it up by swinging and missing at a 96mph 2-2 fastball.

That took us to the halfway point of the game, and in the bottom of the fifth, Madison Bumgarner returned to the mound still working on a shutout. And like Ogando, he, too, was able to retire his adversary 1-2-3.

Bumgarner even one-upped Ogando by throwing just eight pitches. Nelson Cruz popped out to short. Ian Kinsler made solid contact and pulled a low liner to left, but Cody Ross ranged over to make a shoestring catch. Jeff Francoeur then came up, and he grounded an easy roller to short for the third out.

Through five innings, it's still 2-0 San Francisco, and Bumgarner's thrown just 61 innings. If he's able to keep this up, Bruce Bochy may be able to hand the ball directly to Brian Wilson and skip over any potentially troubling middle relief.
