OBAMA SAID WHAT?

The truth of the matter is that businesspeople everywhere are using the "Obama" endorsement (without his intent, permission or knowledge, and without even understanding his position on any of the issues) to sell anything and everything to anyone who will take the bait. This is not advertising -- this is, in the Author's view, malicious fraud. In fact, this is the very type of fraud which ultimately turns consumers against business, and (on a much larger scale) has turned Main Street against Wall Street in the USA. Commerce is not crime -- but there are too many small-minded, remorseless opportunists who have given the very term "business" the unspoken but perceived qualifier of "dirty."

An example follows:

Dads Go Back to School

Obama asks dads to return to school. Finish your degree- Financial aid available to those who qualify. See degrees from ClassesUSA.

I see nothing wrong with education. I am a proponent of education. But then, unscrupulous advertisers everywhere are using the "Obama" endorsement to sell insurance, mortgage services, loan processing services, trade school enrollment, automotive dealers, daycare services, and virtually anything else.

A product or service's sales almost always benefit by an endorsement from a famous, popular or well-respected individual. But this type of commandeered 'blanket" endorsement is purely exploitative -- rest assured that President Obama has not given his personal blessing to many of these enterprises. I would be willing to wager but only if Mr. Obama endorsed gambling) that Mr. Obama would retch on his own bile if he were to personally look into what some of these name-dropping carpetbaggers are doing.

I wonder what Oprah would say about all of this...

BRAINTENANCE: What Would You Call This Type Of Wordplay?

Dear Thinkers and Occasional Sufferers Living The 'Examined Life'" :

There are all types of wordplay...Palindromes, Tom Swifties, Hyperbole, Rhymes, Oxymorons, Paradoxes (which are cousins of the oxymorons, by the way) and a veritable panoply of poetic devices that we suffered through in junior high school. Synecdoche, anyone? (Def: A figure of speech in which a part is substituted for the whole. An example: "Lend me a hand.").

Here are two questions:

1. What is the appropriate term for an expression used to denote a grouping of animals of the same species? For example: school of fish; pride of lions, pod of whales, gaggle of geese, murder of crows, pack of wolves...

2. What would you call this type of wordplay?

When I replied, "It's usually called something else, like classification or categorization," she retorted, "That makes no sense. classification would be if you found your class and categorization would be if your found your cat."

Dear Readers:

I like writing elaborate philosophical diatribes or treatises on intellectually stimulating and throught-provoking topics. I hated writing this article.

In business, your objective in all communications is to be effective. Forget Shakespeare and Longfellow. Forget your eighth-grade English teacher. Forget about the fine art of wordsmithing. Narrative and preambles are luxuries in a time-crunched society.

In business, your communication is science and not art. You use it in order to get something to happen -- whether that means a signed contract, a payment or an appointment.

The reality is that you have very little time to get your message across, and that you must be a missle instead of a mystic. Your audience is typically fatigued, overworked, impatient, inundated with information, preoccupied and has a form of media-induced ADHD. Your audience's attention span is measurable in seconds. Your opportunity is limited. There will not be any courtship.

Here are the rules for effective business communication. Reading Them + Learning Them + Applying Them = Success:

1.     Fewer words = more impact per word. Being brief is critical.

2.     Your first words must get their undivided attention. If you must, use drama and intensity. All is fair in the battle for you audience's focus to be on you, and you alone. Even is you have to use a visual prop, like a flag or a flashlight, or if you've got to embarrass yourself a bit. With your audience, wake 'em and take 'em.

3.     Your next words must clearly and concisely state your proposition. Don't aim to impress someone with your wit and charm -- impress them with a clear expression of what you've got and why they need it. Use surgical speech! Use easily memorable sound bytes (or sound bites).

4.     Your last words must be an urgent, direct and very specific call to action... they must be an instruction. You must either 1) request that they do something quite definite within a definite timeframe, or 2) tell them that you will be doing something definite within a definite timeframe. This part of your message is a firm commitment, a promise --- avoid invitations, and use instructions, instead.

5.     After your last words, leave. Have another appointment, excuse yourself, rush off, leave your audience in the dust. If you linger, you become less significant. Your audience's time is important -- your time is important.

Remember API - It's a handy acronym for

Attention
Proposition, and
Instruction

The more time that you save through efficient communication, the more that you will achieve.

Fear versus Positive Motivation - What moves us?

Dear Thinkers, Ponderers and Students of Life:

It is sad, but true. Human beings are much more readily motivated to action by the threat of pain or loss (i.e.,by fear) than by the opportunity to gain, socially, professionally or financially, with some curious high-risk exceptions where it comes to instant gratification. Of course in these latter exceptions, the risk usually involves getting caught (and it is perceived as unlikely) while the reward is pleasure (which is perceived as very likely).

Fear overcomes inertia or creates inertia, while the positive incentive...the opportunity to gain tends to be far less of a driver. Again, there is another exception here where the potential perceived gain is enormous with respect to the amount of risk or work entailed in the process. People tend toward indolence.

Viewing this situation, why do you suppose our minds and our resultant behavior tend to operate in this fashion?

Here are some possibilities:

1.     Because we visualize threats more powerfully, and more sensorially;
2.     Because we feel that the likelihood of loss is always more probable than the likelihood of gain;
3.     Because we are more emotionally invested in maintaining the "status quo" than we are in getting ahead -- we are only motivated when we feel what little we have, or what little we believe that we deserve;
4.     Because we perceive that an adversary's ability and willingness to carry out a threat is far greater than our ability and willingness to make something positive happen through our efforts;
5.     Because we feel, in the deepest reaches of our subconscious, that we are more deserving of punishment than reward (through feelings of low self-esteem, guilt, and the like) and that it is more likely that harm will come to us than happiness;
6.     Because it is, in fact and perception, easier to run away from something than to run toward something;
7.     Because we feel that we are weaker than those around us.

It Could be the Heisenberg Principle -- Yet, I'm Uncertain...

Dear Readers:

Firstly, note that the reference above has nothing to do with a trophy or with any organized sport inbolving a puck or any other projectile. It involves the notion of observation bias and the inherent uncertainty which surrounds it.

In basic terms, Heisenberg stated (probably in German), the act of our observing events actually influences them. While he was likely applying this to the notion of locating any particular electron orbiting an atom at any given moment, it metaphorically extrapololates itself to the notion of "before you judge the data, judge the source." In reviewing the results of surveys, polls, studies and the like, the first job is to investigate the influences (financial, industrial, personal, temporal, etc.) that "motivated" [either consciously or subconsciously] the researchers to do the research -- and often the priority of "selling a point of view" over merely "objectively discovering the truth" without any preconceived notion or extraneous pressures or influences.

Poll readers beware! The information which you are receiving may be marketing or publicity thinly-veiled as "objective reporting." Need an example? FOX NEWS: FAIR AND BALANCED REPORTING. (chuckle). Need another: The US Labor Department Statistics about unemployment and jobs lost. Tell Americans who cannot find employment anywhere, or who have just given up trying, or who have just reached the end of their unemployment benefits that we are "coming out of the recession," or that we've "turned the corner."

Caveat emptor.
