Green Carrot Juice Company and Nature Doctors

Dr. Jason will be supporting Obby Kahn in his new venture, Green Carrot Juice Company. Juicing is an integral part of ones healthy lifestyle when time is short in our busy lives. Fresh squeezed juices impart vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that can help one attain a healthier body. Certain disease profiles or drugs might not benefit from vegetable/ fruit juices so it is alway important that you consult your Naturopathic Doctor before starting on any new dietary program.
Dr. Jason is receiving no financial benefit from this agreement. He is a strong proponent of a high vegetable content diet and the values aligned well with the new company. He will be providing regular updates on the Nature Doctors and Green Carrot Juice Companies websites as well as providing in house lectures on juicing.
Stay tuned!

Adrenal Fatigue - The Modern Epidemic

For those that may not be aware, the lifestyle that we have chosen to live in North America goes against natural systems and rythms. How many of you have ever watched a show where a pride of lions is stalking a herd of Zebras. The Zebras are eating casually as the Lions approach. In a sudden burst of adrenalin, the lions take flight and the Zebras respond. They run until either the Lions are too tired to continue or until one of their fellow animals are caught. At that moment, the entire herd comes to a halt, the Zebras take in a large breath and shake their heads before slowly returning to grazing; often just meters from where the Lions are eating their mate.
What does that teach you? For most, they find it interesting. For field biologists, they see how the Zebra's can recognize when they are in danger and when they are not! This is what we as humans have long forgotten.
As far as science knows, we are the only animals on the planet that is able to "think" themselves into a stressful state. By thinking about what may be coming up in our day to day lives, adrenalin and blood flow patterns shift in our body - even in the absence of absolute threat. Adrenal fatigue is the functional diagnosis for someone that has been living in a chronically stressed state and now has become unable to produce any more or in fact become unresponsive to their own stress hormones.
How do we treat burnout or adrenal fatigue?
There are multiple herbs and nutraceuticals that can help someone dig themselves out of the burn out hole. IV treatements, acupunture and lifestyle counseling all are successful. The more you do, the faster the results. Now what are you going to do about it?

Hormones: Achieving a Better Balance

Hormones act as chemical messengers of change in the body. They influence how we think, feel, breathe, look and age. We’ve heard much of hormones, but what exactly are they?

Hormones are chemicals that are made in specialized organs, circulate by blood and lymph, and essentially affect every cell in our bodies. They do this by adhering to either specific or generalized receptor sites on the cell itself. With this contact, signals are sent.

There are many areas in the body that both create and are influenced by hormones, such as the thyroid, adrenal, and pineal glands; as well as the ovaries and testes, to name a few. With that said, it’s essential to remember that all individualized hormones not only have a specific role, but they also interact with each other in a complicated structure. This is why there is importance in investigating hormones on a comprehensive level.

When balance is achieved, we feel well – mental faculties are optimized: concentration, memory, mood, and sleep come easily. Our physical selves also reflect this on many levels: optimized weight, periods are fluid and regular, muscles are strengthened, and we age gradually.

When hormones are out of sync, we may start to see many negative effects. For example, in our teens, we may see mood swings, acne, and irregular or painful periods. In our 20’s, imbalance may also include: infertility, postpartum depression, a decreased attention span and PMS. By the time we’ve reached our 30’s, if imbalance remains, the cycle extends, including: bloating, migraines, breast tenderness, and weight gain. And by the time we’ve reached our 40’s and 50’s or later, we may see all of these symptoms and more: bone loss, night sweats, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, depression, anxiety, heart disease and heightened cholesterol.

Of course, all of these symptoms can overlap at many ages and many levels of imbalance. The trick is to identify what hormones, glands and organs need better support, as symptoms don’t always point to the “correct hormonal imbalance”.

To best identify if your body needs hormonal balancing, as a Naturopathic Doctor, I look at the symptoms you present with, alongside your history, your family history, and your intentions for health. I often then investigate hormonally-related blood testing and saliva testing to objectively determine where the imbalance may lie. I may also inquire about previous pelvic ultrasounds, PAPs, bone density testing and mammography to evaluate the safest and effective means of achieving hormonal balance for your body.

The road to hormonal balance can be complicated, although need not be. As a Naturopathic Doctor, my hope is to help guide you in identifying if there is a hormonal disturbance to address, which hormone(s) may be involved, and in helping suggest achievable ways to help correct and rebalance the body’s hormonal system(s).
If you require any further information about how Naturopathic Medicine may assist you in attaining your best hormonal balance, please do not hesitate to call the clinic’s front desk staff at: 204-943-6079.

Wishing you much health and inner balance,

Dr. Dara Morden, B.Sc., N.D.

Massage doesn't just feel good – and we have proof!

A 2010 study released by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA found that patients receiving 45 minutes of Swedish massage experienced significant changes in lymphocyte numbers (white blood cells, key players in your body’s immune system), a large decrease in Arginine Vasopressin (a hormone suspected to trigger aggressive behavior and linked to increases in cortisol levels), and decreased levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) itself. What does all of this mean? You have one more tool in your cold and flu prevention regimen. Massage not only improves your posture and aids in tissue repair but bolsters your natural ability to fight off infection, as well. It also helps your body shift from that stressful “fight-or-flight” overdrive mode into a healthier, more balanced pace. But of course, we already knew that!
To find out more about the study visit http://www.cedars-sinai.edu/About-Us/News/News-Releases-2010/Adults-Demonstrate-Modified-Immune-Response-After-Receiving-Massage-Cedars-Sinai-Researchers-Show.aspx

Cupping Massage

Cupping Massage
Looking for a new approach to old aches and pains? Our massage therapist has an exciting technique to share with you: cupping massage!
Cupping is a technique in which your Registered Massage Therapist uses small plastic cups to create vacuums over trouble-areas. The vacuums cause the skin and underlying tissue to rise a centimeter or two into the cup, separating layers of matted-up tissue and allowing them to move freely - as they should! The suction brings fresh blood flow to the area and effectively cleans the deep tissue below of any stagnation. Feeling better already? There’s more!
Freeing the layers of connective tissue allows for an increase in the range of motion of the treated joints, and is usually noticeable immediately after the cups are removed. Releasing the connective tissue allows your muscles to relax, and they benefit from the increased circulation as well. Cupping massage is also beneficial for most mature scars, many lung conditions, digestive troubles and sore joints, especially the spine. The strong suction action of cupping massage allows us to reach deeper tissues than often possible with regular massage, without compressing those often sensitive joints.
Book your next massage by calling us at 204-943-6079, or inquire at the front desk the next time you are in the office. Our massage therapist, Zoe Genik, will be happy to discuss how cupping massage can help you on your path to better health!

Latest Fish Oil Controversy

www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2012/.../fish-stroke-supplements.html

Eating oily fish may cut stroke risk - Health - CBC News

By now, many of you have heard the latest controversy on fish oil supplementation and as usual, this one is no less flawed. This study was a meta-analysis on whether fish or fish oil consumption lowered risks of ischemic attacks of the brain or cerebrovascular system. The conclusion was that people who eat more fish, had a lower risk of stroke. Duh! However, fish oil supplementation was not associated with protection. I hope you all are smart enough to figure what is misleading or incorrect about this study.

First, people who consume more fish typically consume higher amounts of other healthy foods. People who solely take a fish oil pill with hopes of protecting themselves from bad eating habits are fooling themselves. There is no silver bullet in the pharmaceutical or nutraceutical realm. Wake up! Finding a good quality fish to eat that is not contaminated with new-to-nature humanmade chemicals, now that is a challenge.

Second, there is no designated quantity of EPA/DHA that was standardized between these studies. Omega 3's are present in seed oils and fish oils but EPA and DHA are considered to be the most beneficial and protective. Simply looking at Omega 3 metabolites does not take into account digestive health, quality of oil or genetic ability to assimilate them.

Third, cellular saturation levels were not standardized again between the studies. Sure, you can state that those with the highest metabolites had the highest cellular saturation, but this is not necessarily the case. All cells in our bodies are made of fat. If your cells contain more EPA and DHA they will be healthier or less inflammatory. The opposite is true for saturated or trans fats.

Fourth, length of supplementation was not standardized again. There is variation between the studies as is to be expected but when we are working with a food or natural supplement, it does not have the same immediate or quick effect as a drug. What is the benefit of EPA and DHA supplementation over 30 or 40 years?

Fifth, there are over 15,000 peer reviewed published research on the health benefits of EPA and DHA in one's diet. There will always be the random contrary study and those are the ones that make the news. Controversy is news worthy - the truth is boring.

I think I will stick with the majority of researchers in the world and stay bored.

Dr. Jason Bachewich ND

Blog post by maker of Just the Goods!

Why natural skin care?
Hello! My name is Milena and it's my pleasure to accept an invitation from Nature Doctors to be a guest blogger on the topic of natural skin care. Since we haven't met before, I can introduce myself to you as the person behind Just the Goods, a Winnipeg-based line of handmade natural skin and body care products available at Nature Doctors. I began making natural alternatives to conventional skin care products in 2007 when people I care about started developing allergic reactions to the items they had been using for years. I was already well aware of the significant differences between natural and processed foods through ongoing dialogue with my naturopath, but was suddenly confronted with direct proof that what we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put into them. I started to research the issue in detail.
Many of us learned growing up that our skin is a protective layer, which is true to some degree, but our skin is more accurately a permeable barrier that serves the additional function of letting things out and in. For example, our skin helps our bodies expunge toxins through the act of sweating, but also helps us absorb vitamin D from sunlight. Being our largest organ, it is covered in pores and thus readily absorbs everything around us from pollutants in the air, to the products we apply, be it moisturizer, shampoo, fragrance, etc.
Petroleum and its many derivatives are products of the oil and gas industry and serve as the primary ingredient in most commercially available skin care preparations. This can be in obvious forms such as petrolatum (i.e. petroleum jelly), which is sold as a moisturizer, or in the less obvious form of detergent, which is a more harsh alternative to natural soap. These are things many of us would never consider ingesting, so it is a wonder they are still promoted by major corporations as reasonable things to rub onto our skin. Unfortunately, there are many other chemicals found in skin and body care products that are not only suspicious, but prove to have damaging consequences for our health and our environment. Artificial preservatives such as parabens have been linked to the development of cancer, while phthalates are also suspected carcinogens and hormone disruptors linked to reproductive disorders. Artificial fragrances can trigger asthma and mimic estrogen increasing chances of breast cancer. Even seemingly health positive inventions such as the antibacterial agent Triclosan has been found to reduce muscle strength in a range of animals and harm the human immune system contributing to increased allergic reactions to a range of other things.
The best way to avoid these and other chemicals is to use products that refuse to include them. There is a tremendous range of natural oils, clays, and salts found in nature capable of offering all the things we look for in products that help us cleanse, moisturize and freshen our bodies, so the truth is that we can easily avoid nasty chemicals in our daily care routines.
Over the coming months I look forward to sharing with you information about various unhealthy chemicals found in mass produced skin care products, and I'll offer some ideas for homemade alternatives, as well. In the meantime, the best way to get more information about the importance of natural skin and body care is to talk to your naturopath. Although I'm not a medically trained specialist, I'm always more than happy to share the research I've undertaken, as well =-)

Also, each month, a doctor at Nature Doctors will provide an article on an interesting topic that will help you understand your health and the services provided by Naturopathic or Homeopathic doctors.

I hope you had a wonderful summer and are ready to begin a new season! Please enjoy the attached newsletter, featuring an article by Dr. Jessica Beatty on the importance of Detoxification.

FREE Corporate Wellness Talks

Nature Doctors is offering free corporate wellness talks over a lunch hour for your organization or business. The session includes an interactive discussion with a Naturopathic Doctor and will focus on a topic of your choice. This is a wonderful way for a group of employees to learn about manging stress in the workplace, boosting immune systems so less sick time is used and adapting a lifestyle that promotes balance. Please call 943-6079 if you are interested in booking a doctor for your workplace.
