Little Brass Bird is a fledgling animated show made with handmade plushies. How cool is that?

Plush Workshop!!!

If you're going to be in the LA area then I hope you can join me for this workshop that I'll be giving in early December. This is a great opportunity for anyone who has "plush aspirations" and wants to learn the basics to get started on his/her own creations. I'm going to be teaching stuff like pattern-making and various techniques in embellishment. Everything learned can totally be moulded into creating anything from really physical pieces to something simpler but just as full of wander! The class will then culminate in everyone making their own sushi cushion modeled after my own plush sushi.

Stuft Scorpion

When it comes to introducing new critters into my family of Stuft Acquaintances, I usually opt for big animals that someone can spot while on safari. But this past weekend, I had a buddy ask if I could make her a scorpion. The challenge was made and then met. Check out my first scorpion. His name is Sir Abbott. He's about 7 inches long (that's from the curve of his caudal segment on his metasoma down to the the tip of his dorsal for you arachnid fanatics).

New Mermaid and Owl Dolls

My new mermaid is a big hit with my own children and I already starting working on several more. She is definitely the largest doll I have made, and is extra soft and hug-gable. The bottom picture shows just how big she is, my daughter in the picture is almost 3. :)

I am really into making owls right now. I tried to use the colors of the season - I love fall!

I've added a new plush cutie to my Christmas Collection. I think snow seals must be one of the cutest animals around.. right of there with the chihuahua. I was inspired by another artists interpretation and I knew I had to make one for my collection. You can find this sweet guy along with the rest of the collection in my etsy shop.

Here are three more that are headed to Gallery Hanahou's Luv-able and Hug-able show. The theme of the show is "Mediums and Minis" and these are my minis. I never thought I could sew this small. These little guys measure 3.5", are made of wool felt, and come inside a plastic Pocket Protector. Of course, they would probably only lick your enemy to death but hey, that's one form of protection!

A while ago I picked up some soft woollen blankets from the thrift store, and I have made them into some soft woollen plushies. I like the soft warmth from the slightly worn pile and they're lovely to work with. Above is grrantler, another go at antlers,

and this duck fox (because he kinda looks like a duck, and kinda like a fox) also with vintage upholstery body.

They're both in my shop now, and you can see a few more on my blog.

New Taxidermy

For a long while now, I've been thinking about which new animal I should introduce into my arsenal of faux taxidermy. After a much needed trip to the Natural History Museum for inspiration. I came to the now obvious conclusion that I should make "bird" Stuft Acquaintances. In December, I want to introduce them properly in an exhibit which will be swamped, or should I say flocked with these new guys. Here's a sneak peek at one of them...

Heart Felt Santa Doll

This Santa Doll was made out of the items in the picture above, some Eco-friendly fill, a little bit of wool roving, and lots of love. The customer requested this doll and sent me clothing from when her son was an infant for me to incorporate in the design of the doll in some way. I used the clothing pieces as patches on Santa's suit and think this is such a wonderful way to create a family keepsake and make a handmade doll even more special.

When Music and Plush Collide

Since I began making my dolls and dollhouses I have gotten the chance to create some pretty neat things - from bringing life to an old wool sweater that hadn't been worn in years to turning a child's drawing into something they can hold and cherish. Recently I finished up a toy line for the music duo Renee & Jeremy and I think this unique collaboration is up there with the coolest things I've gotten to make. All the items I created were inspired by the awesome animation for their music video for "It's a big world" and the illustrations on their website, both done by artist Hsinping Pan. Check it out!

I just finished up a custom order of Dr. Mario-inspired virus creatures for a special customer. These little guys were a challenge to simplify and I decided to make felt/fabric paint faces & hands, to make them a bit more cartoon-like. Off they go!
