2015...I certainly don't think I ever imagined this year ever coming. It's not so much that I had something super exciting planned for this year, it's just that...well, this is the year I turn 30. As a young child, I imagined 30 as being ancient, the age when everything falls apart. However, anymore age 30 seems to be the year of reinvention, and I am certainly hoping to revitalize some aspects of my life.

In late 2014, I was plagued with some Crohn's-esque complications and a foot surgery that has me in a boot for what feels like eternity. Children and dogs seem enamored by it, and adults seem to find it as justification for the handicap placard hanging from my rear view mirror. With it occurring right before the holidays, television shows have finished their "fall season" and you are left with cliche holiday movies and shows that leave you saying, "people actually sign the waiver to appear on this show?" Being an avid reader, I decided that my time was better spent ensuring that I read all of the novels that have inspired movies coming out in the next few months. Call me strange, but I prefer to go into the movie knowing what aspects should be shown, and deciphering whether or not the story has been properly interpreted.

I had been wanting to read the memoir "Wild" for some time, and with the release of the much anticipated film (starring Reese Witherspoon) I found myself anxious to dive in. I'm not sure what my expectations were, but even though "Cheryl" and I had grown up much differently, I began to see many similarities in our lives. In the book, Cheryl is 26, and preparing to take the trek of her life on the Pacific Coast Trail as a way to properly mourn the death of her mother and become the person with the ideals that she had instilled upon her. Throughout the way, she reflects on many of the aspects of her life that have changed since her mother passed away; she left her degree incomplete with only a semester to go, she cheated on a supportive, caring husband many times, and she even sought out illicit drugs...all in an effort to make her feel the way she had before her mother passed.

Anyone who knows me would know that the last word to describe me would be "outdoorsy" but this book really inspired me to take my life back into my own hands. Perhaps I will not walk 1000 miles to achieve this goal, but I felt similar changes were necessary if I wanted to feel the happiness and relief that I so much deserved to live a fulfilling life.

Thus, I have decided to make 2015 the year of Allison. The year where it's not just about the talk, but more about the walk. I have decided to make the changes in my diet that I know I so desperately need in order to keep my Crohn's in control - no more sodas, less carbs, and more veggies. With the help of a friend, I am training for my first half marathon in May, where my goal is simply to finish...nothing more, nothing less. I will not focus on trying to find the man of my dreams, but will hope that these decisions will attract the kind of person I want to have a life with. And lastly, I hope to make better financial choices so that at the end of the year I have more than what I started with, and can begin thinking about what's next for me, instead of feeling stuck in the same, complacent place.

It's a lot to take on, but I feel like I need to embrace getting older and to share my trials and tribulations with friends and family. I may not be where I expected to be at 30, but I've still got a lot to give this world. So here's to 2015, make it your year and become the person you've always wanted to be, one day at a time. FYI, only 361 days to go!

To the 2014 Graduates..

It's true; I never got to give a commencement speech and I'm still a bit bitter about it. However, as I approach my 10 year hs reunion and my 6 year college graduation anniversary, what I really wish is that someone had given me the advice I'm about to give you all (yes, the 3 people that read this blog. Thank you.)

Baby Don't Rush....

My entire life had been one goal gearing up for another larger goal:

do well in high school to get into good college (check)

do well in college to get into good medical school or get good job (check)

be filthy rich and enjoy life (not so much...)

Let's face it, it's basically impossible to plan out every aspect of your life. This took me a very long time to figure out. The first few years out of college were very confusing for me. I wanted to live like a baller and ignore all of the other responsibilities that came with being a grown up.

I felt the pressure of all of my friends getting married and starting their lives...and a few friends got married, had kids, and stopped working shortly thereafter. All of the sudden I felt like I was doing what I was supposed to do...

The fact of the matter is that there is no "syllabus" for life; just because you don't find the right guy in college doesn't mean you should settle just because your best friend is getting married. And if you can't afford a new car or that fancy purse you've been eying...don't do it. The only thing worse than buyers remorse is that monthly bill that keeps knocking at your door for 60 months...

Live a Little...

One of my biggest regrets after graduation is that I was so ready to start making money that I missed out on the trip of a lifetime with some of my sorority sisters backpacking around Europe. Sure...I bet there would have been a few hiccups along the way, but I really wish I had been a bit more adventurous. I told myself that I only wanted to do the traveling if I could do it in style...but at this rate...that will be in about 50 years...and I'm not sure how stylish 70 y.o. Americans in Europe are, but I'm guessing my odds (and my legs) would have been better at 22.

It's important to start saving soon, but also take time for fun trips. Let's face it, it takes years to build up that vacation time - which is why you should definitely take advantage of the holiday time you do have off. My first year out of college I made sure to spend all of my holidays with friends who had chosen to live in more exciting destinations than myself. All a good vacay needs is good friends, good fun, and good wine :)

Give Yourself a Break...

About 6 months into working life, I had a full on tantrum about how much life sucked. Way more of my money was going to bills/rent/etc. then I deemed acceptable. I was angry. I mean, as the low man on the pole, I was dealt a lot of the "technical writing" challenges which I had only spend 10 weeks in school covering. Where was the lab work? The DOEs? HELP ME.

I remember coming home one night and telling my mom about all of this bullshit. How I could have just gotten an English degree after all! The fact is that sometimes a job is not all you think it's going to be...and once you're a full timer the charade is up.

So, what do you do? Well, if you're like me...I did an assessment and thought maybe it was the field. Or maybe it was the company. So I left the company I was with only to find that the grass wasn't always greener. The thing is, you have to put your time in. However, once you've proven yourself over a year or two - don't be afraid to come to your supervisor or mentor and explain to them how you are feeling and what you are looking for. A great supervisor will help you find a job within the company that meets your needs; in fact, I'm a huge fan of the rotational programs that more companies are becoming accustomed to. Companies invest in you just as much as you invest in them - they would rather keep good employees and make them happy versus starting over with a new hire. If that discussion doesn't go well...look elsewhere.

And if you really hate your job and feel like you've covered all of the possible scenarios...consider a career change. However, do your homework. You've seen how much the investment is to getting one degree..starting over can be pretty intimidating.

And you know what? If you're not a manager or a director or a CEO by the time you're 30...join the club! Most of those people have earned that position after many years of hard work and lots of experience. Here's the way I look at it: do you really want that title if you're not prepared for the responsibility? Why rush when you could possible have the same opportunity in a year or two with even more experience. A title means very little...and it shouldn't define who you are as an employee.

So at the end of the day...try to find something positive about your job - even if it's just a paycheck. And...just remember that most colleges have at least one time a year when you are allowed to act like a College Idiot all over again...HOMECOMING :)

What's In My Bag?

One of my favorite bits in US Weekly is the "What's in My Bag?" piece. I'm always looking for new ideas for things I have to carry in my bag, and I must say some of my beauty favorites have been found in this article. So...I know share with you what's in my bag. Reader...beware

My turquoise Botkier has seen better days - but I just love the color and style! I got it over 2 years ago and it is starting to show...the seams are starting to rip on the crossbody strap. Honestly, I'm so attached I may look into a repair shop to save my precious!

Techno Geek: I've basically always got my iPhone with me...and I love this owl case that one of my besties customized for me. It reminds me of my Chi Omega sisters!

Summer Shades: Before they made a comeback, my older brother was always reppin' the Wayfarers. I have to admit I love the classic style with the modern spin of all of the shades. This Olive Rubberized pair is my ole standby.

Memberships Out the...: I love a great deal, but I hate how every place makes you carry a "card" around now. As you can see, I'm a clutch wallet gal, so when it became overwhelming I picked up this bright Tory Burch card case to keep all of my memberships sorted. Honestly, I couldn't take the disorganization.

Traveling Lady: I honestly hate carrying my Passport around, but I still haven't updated it to my maiden name. Ugh. It does come in handy though when I forget that I still have some things in my married name (like my college graduate program...whoops).

All in One Gadgets: My mom thought it was so weird when I asked for a Swiss Army Card for Christmas one year but I use it ALL of the time. It has a great pair of scissors, nail file, a pin, and even a toothpick...it has come in handy on multiple occasions.

A wee bit Lippy: I must carry at least 3 lip treatments at one time. I love the Fresh brand Sugar gloss for overall shine, and my new favorite is the Tarte Amazonian Clay lipstick. It has great pigment with shea butter so it never cracks.

Smelling Good on the Run: I love that fragrances have come out will rollerball versions. It's a great way to sample a scent you're still not 100% about and is the perfect size for travel. Now I always smell like roses.

So there you have it...that's "What's in my Bag" at this moment. And of course some fall, we'll have to change it up!

Ray has been part of the underground music following for over a decade, with songs like "Trouble" being sung by the likes of many music contestants. Revisiting this whole School Thing...

Several years ago, I was still overly ambitious and decided it would be a wonderful idea to go back to school and get my masters. The program at Purdue University made it seem so attractive: online, the capability to get it done quickly, applicable classes to improve your knowledge on-the-job...

Well, let's just say that life as a full time Engineer who also takes classes is not at all fun. And here are a few reasons why:

You have to work with UNDERGRADS

Honestly, a lot changes in the real world. When you have a 40+ hour a week job that requires you to...I don't know, work all day you go to bed at 9:30pm and wake up at 5:30am. Yes, that's exactly 8 hours...because that's all you have time for.

So when you decide to be ambitious and ALSO go to school, you basically use every bit of free time working on class. Gone are the days of weekends because you have to listen to 3 lectures and read 3 chapters on how often your neurons are firing.

And when you can do this on your own time, that's wonderful. Trust me. But...when you have to reply on others for project work...it's enough to make you want to shake them and tell them that THIS IS NOT HOW THINGS WORK IN THE REAL WORLD.

Last week, I was in Boston all week for work. I got home Friday evening, and proceeded to work Saturday and Sunday on a project from the class from hell. Imagine my surprise when one of my peers let's the team know that he will be unavailable for the weekend because he and his gf are celebrating their 6 month anniversary. It took a lot of patience to not provide the statistical probabilities of he and said gf staying together and having a successful engagement/marriage, etc. but I also wanted to shake him. I would love to have a weekend galavanting around some college campus with a hot (or even mediocre at this point in my life) co-ed whose only concern is whether or not you're going to lavaliere her any time soon. I mean really? This project is like 50% of our grade - get focused...before I jump off a bridge.

2. You complete activities that are completely irrelevant to your actual job

My current class, Quantitative Physiology, involves hour long powerpoint lectures that seem to "pass" over the concepts. So, after cover 10 chapters, 12 lectures, and other various research papers, studying for the exam is quite overwhelming. Well, imagine my frustration when said exam is over EVERY MINUTE DETAIL OF ONE OF THOSE LECTURES. Are you kidding me? I really have to tell you every aspect about why a monkey isn't rewarded by focusing on a dot?

Guess what students? You will never use this. In fact, in the real world you are NEVER tested. And when you are...it's about the Bloodborne Pathogens you "might" come across in your work.

So excuse me for being a little PISSED that I spent 6 hours of my Sunday prepping for an exam that only covered about 30 minutes of my studying time. I hate you.

3. The only thing comparable is working with others...

That's right, the only thing I can find comparable to my actual job is that I am completing a ton of work that I will never get credit for. Why yes, I'd love to rely on my "technical expert" counterparts to be able to write a paragraph, but apparently they were blessed with aptitude on one side of the brain.

Yes, I'm a neurotic control freak who still wants to do my best, but jesus...how's about a comma every once and then? And spell check...that's there for a reason kids.

So basically, my education has only proven one thing for me. That my anxiety medication either works great or that my world view has really taken a 180 in the last 6 years...because basically, my only goal at the end of the semester is to receive a B in the course. Still aiming too high? Well that's only so I will be reimbursed by my company.

Only 28 and I am already a bitter adult. Success!

The Real World - Ain't It Fun?

Call it coincidence, call it fate. However, I call it...reality. On the way home from work after a long day, a song popped on the radio and boy did it really get it. The song was Paramore's latest, Ain't It Fun.

Most of you are smart, so I don't want to spend an hour deciphering the lyrics of a song that pretty much describes itself. However, for those of you who tend to turn off your thinkers on the weekends like me, here we go. The song basically talks about how growing up isn't all it's cracked up to be. Specifically, there is a great part of the song that yells, "Don't go crying, to your Momma, cause you're on your own in the real world."

I literally started laughing because boy oh boy is that the case. It's not so much that I feel alone - far from that! It's just that, this "adulthood" thing that I've been trying to figure out for approximately 6 years is something my mother has done for 39 years and my dad, 48. In fact, my dad has been with the same company for 46 of those years. So...I guess what I'm trying to say is don't expect a pity party.

It made me think of the interactions I have with high school and college kids on a daily basis. My company employs many college kids as interns to gain experience in the field, I advise the chapter of the sorority that I was a member of, and I have many friends and family members eager to emerge into this guise of freedom that is surely what everyone expects with adulthood.

And honestly, when someone from those groups comes up to me and tells me about how ready they are to move on all I want do is play a scene from one of my all time favorites, Billy Madison, and remind those kids how overrated growing up is.

It's not all bad, but let me just throw some caution to the wind. Life is not cheap.

My first job out of college was with a very large pharmaceutical company headquartered in Indianapolis. When I saw how much I was making, I had basically already planned my first Nordstrom shopping spree in my head. I had decided to live at home to "save money" and couldn't wait to get to spending. However, about 6 months in my excitement started to falter.

For one thing, while 8 hours a day is an expectation at most job, 10 hours is recommended and 12 hours is best. This was no problem when you were interning right? That's because you were being paid hourly. In the real world, you make the same flat fee. Now that really comes in handy when you're feeling ill and still get paid...but when you've got approximately 40 hours in by Wednesday, it gets less fun.

After realizing that life as an intern was a complete 180 from life as a full timer, I had to come to come to terms with those two words that every college grad dreads: student loans. Realizing that nearly a 1/4 of my salary would be immediately turned over to pay off of my undergraduate loans was depressing at best. I soon saw my dreams of owning a Range Rover in 5 years dwindling away.

Don't get me wrong, I made a few good decisions along the way, but I definitely still tried to live like a baller. I ended up getting an apartment on Indy's north side for an "affordable" $1200/month, paid a car loan of $500/month and started to see why my parents were constantly complaining about wireless bills, cable bills, and all of the luxuries we Milennials have grown accustomed to.

Now, I see that I was trying to live the life my parents were living immediately out of college. Granted, as an engineer I was emerging college at a much better salary than many...but I still couldn't believe how much of my check was already spent before I got it. And trust me, it doesn't get better. I practically need a degree in Finance to understand how insurance companies determine your out of pocket expense and credit cards...don't get me started.

And when I start to get down, I think back to when I was a mere undergraduate. Driving my 1999 Pontiac Grand Am, my only concern being what my costume would be for the fraternity party of the week, and how many calories were in a 6 inch Subway sub.

So...for those of you in the final countdown to adulthood - SLOW YOUR ROLL. Try to live like a college kid for as long as you can. There's no reason to try and grow up overnight. Work hard so you can play hard...and at the end of the day, give yourself time to complain. But fair warning...we're all in the same spot.

Sisterhood: My Thoughts on Sororities

When I tell most people I'm in a sorority, they're not really surprised. Most of them proceed with the question, "Is it anything like that book 'Pledged'?" or "One time, I saw this episode of Dr. Phil where these girls died because of a hazing incident..." and you know what? I'm not going to say that it's never happened. Even I've enjoyed a Lifetime movie or two surrounding the topic. The fact is that my experience with sorority life has been far from anything horrific, in fact...it changed my college experience and my outlook on adult life...

I have two brothers, but I was only surrounded 24/7 by my younger brother, Paul. For the first 5 years of his life it was easy to convince him to play dress up or Barbies, but once he realized that me doing his makeup wasn't what most boys his age considered "fun" the girl time halted.

Growing up I always had lots of friends, but I never seemed to consistently stick with a group of girls. My interests would change and we would grow apart...we never had something keeping us together.

When I left for college, I was terrified. Let's just say that my on campus visit to good old Rose-Hulman left me feeling like I was not going to be having my "Saved by the Bell: The College Years" experience I had always dreamed of. After unpacking a carload of stuff and moving into my room, I clung to my parents for fear that when they returned I would be playing dungeon and dragons and watching significant amounts of anime. While I had always been an intelligent gal, I still had interests in sports, fashion, and well...personal hygiene. A few weeks into my first quarter I was ready to call it quits. I knew I should have gone to Duke or Northwestern like I had wanted to...

But several weeks into school something happened - Rush. I am so thankful I go to a school that does Rush in the fall...because I'm not sure I would have been giving good ole Rose a second chance come winter time. Back in those days I was very good at convincing my mother that every social occasion required a new outfit, so the weekend before Rush she took me shopping back home in Indy where I meticulously put together several outfits for the impending parties. I wanted to make a good impression and let these people know that I was definitely sorority material.

After the first party it was evident which sorority I belonged in - Chi Omega. It's funny, but I can still remember that party like it was yesterday. One of those ladies ended up being my 'grandma' and two of them ended up being in my wedding party. I was so afraid to get my hopes up...especially since I lived in a dorm where very few other freshman girls lived.

I went to all of the parties, but had been feeling kind of crappy the last night of the Preference party. That next morning, I went up to my RA, and promptly passed out on her floor. There is nothing more embarrassing than being unconscious and waking up to large woman yelling your name. I was transported to the hospital and ended up missing Bid Day. At that point I knew that whatever sorority I had gotten in to must have revoked my membership after not showing up for Bid Day...but when I got to my door it was decorated with all sorts of red and yellow - the colors of Chi Omega. The girls had made a sign for me to get better soon and plenty of people stopped by that day to check on me and tell me how excited they were to see me.

It may sound funny, but that week was one of the best weeks of my life. I firmly believe that my entire college experience changed from that one decision. Never again did I have to worry about going to the Cafeteria alone, not knowing what to do on a Friday night, or not making friends. For the first time in my life I had sisters, approximately 60 of them.

I would be lying to you if I said it was all wonderful - there were definitely times when I want to settle an argument with those girls the old fashioned way just like my younger and brother and I would. And I definitely have gone through some of the darkest moments of my life with some of these women. I'm not best friends with all of them, but I can definitely count on them.

The possibilities of sisterhood are endless - and it didn't just stop with my active sisters. When I had my first job, there were plenty of sisters from my chapter whom I had never met before and got to know. And when I moved to Memphis for a job I got involved with sisters from other chapters - and the best part was that it was so easy. Knowing that we had both made the same commitment allowed us to instill instant trust and admiration for each other.

I'm a firm believer that life is what you make it, and there have been times when I've learned that the hard way. Even though I complain about Facebook sometimes, I'm so happy to get on there and see the lives of my sisters changing for the better. I feel proud when they get a promotion or announce a pregnancy and I hurt for them when they are dealing with the loss of a loved one or are having a difficult time. The fact is that these people are my family, and if I can help them I will.

So before you imagine Tori Spelling as a young pledge who finds some murderous connection to the school dean because of her experience in sororities, realize that most women have a much different outlook on their time in sisterhood. There are times when I need it more than others, but that sisterhood is something I can always depend on. This year I get to go to the National Convention of Chi Omega with two actives that impress me every day and a wonderful friend that was in my pledge class. It's a decision I'm happy I've made, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Fantastic Local Finds

One bandwagon that I am certainly okay with jumping on is the new "buy local" focus. However, there are some common misconceptions about buying local.

It doesn't have to be food or other persishable items
It's not always more expensive
Buying local doesn't make you a liberal, hippie, or hipster...it makes you informed

Now that I can step down from my soap box, let's talk local finds in one of my favorite places on earth, Indianapolis, Indiana. Even though I am not very happy with the recent "extended" winter, Nap Town has some of the best eateries, neighborhoods, and local businesses on the planet!

One of my favorite local brands that has been growing in popularity is Ambre Blends. This natural beauty house offers a variety of products that smell great, are all natural, and wait for it...serve a purpose!

Take a look at one of my favorite products, ambre glow. It's scented with the company's signature fragrance, Ambre Essence, is an amazing moisturizer, and gives a very natural shimmer. A small amount goes a long way, and since it actually takes care of that balmy skin (thanks, winter!) it lasts forever!

The other item I swear by? The organic lip remedy. Wow has this concoction does the trick. I put on a little bit at night, and wake up to moisturized, soft lips.

I stumbled upon the next brand thanks to the company's lead makeup artist, Kiralee, doing a fabulous job on my makeup several years ago. Eyemax Cosmetics has emerged as one of the most reputable cosmetic companies in the 317 area code. Not only do they provide on site salon services, but they also carry their own beauty products, as well as some other lesser known but high quality brands.

I personally love their line of make-up brushes...think Bobbi Brown quality at a much more reasonable price. They also carry Elizabeth Bergman Organics, which has an amazing line of essential oils that will surely help keep your skin bright and nourished. My favorite is the "calm" oil. It's a great scent to help you prepare for a restful sleep while also giving you that glow in the morning that we thought only the rich and famous were known for.

Sometimes buying local may seem like you are spending more out of pocket, but with the improved quality of the product...you'll end up buying less often and looking better! It's definitely a win!

It's Been Awhile...

That's right - I'm back. For better or for worse, I just can't get away from blogging. What can I say? The people (i.e. a few friends) have spoken.

My first attempt at blogging was unrealistic, selfish, and led to a shopping habit that when halted, put the Nordstrom in Circle Centre out of business. Still a bit narcissistic? Well, let's just say when you shop like a Kardashian and don't have the seven figures to back it up...it adds up over time. While I did get a free hairdryer, the people at Cole Haan still haven't called, and DVF hasn't swooped me away to help her design her Spring 2015 collection. Sigh.

So what's going to change? Gone are the days of trying to keep up with more than one blog. For one thing, my opinion on weddings has changed (table for one, please). Don't get me wrong, marriage is great when you find the right person...it's just not numero uno on my priority list. This blog is going to be a little bit of this, a little bit of that. I'll try to keep the schizophrenia to a minimum but no promises.

I want to share with you my great finds and the latest fashion trends (could patterned leggings at pants please stop? Unless you are Gisele Bundchen on your way to Yoga...you have no excuse). Trust me, when I need to be, I can be super savvy. It's all about spending your hard earned dough on a few key pieces, buying your basics on the cheap, and not falling for that marketing hooplah. It's depressing how many sales are in fact not sales. Not to mention that looking "cute" at the gym is a total waste. Your only excuse is when Charlie Hunnam is your spin instructor. Than by all means, wear the low cut tank top and the tight pants. Just make sure they are not printed. See above.

And how can I not talk about the latest celebrity gossip and whose who of Hollywood? It seems sort of like community service considering subscriptions of US Weekly are down. (side note, just like them on facebook or twitter or whatever...you get it in real time and you don't have to read 25 things about some D list celebrity and find out what's in the bag of the latest ABC Family star...cool you still use Lip Smackers!). You know I fill that DVR up with everything Bravo. And when you sign up for Reality TV, you basically are announcing to the world, "Please criticize me for telling my P.O. that going to the Kesha concert is critical to my sobriety and wellbeing."

Lastly, this will be a great way for you to live through all of the embarrassing challenges that are my life. It's not glamorous, and surely not always fashionable...but it's a life that I'm so grateful that I have. Most of all, I'm thankful to you guys for reading and supporting me. Hopefully it will be a fun ride for everyone involved.

Lip Stains - Actual Long Lasting Color and Shine...Who Knew?

While some fashionable people might not admit it, a lot of the knowledge they have on fashion and beauty comes from those around them. I will be the first person to say that I have always relied on the help of others to point me in the right direction.

If there's a void in beauty, it's definitely lip products. No, I'm not talking about making them bigger (I think you're at the wrong place if you're looking for that) I'm not talking about finding the right color that shines and lasts for longer than 5 minutes. My theory with make-up is that I want to apply it once and not have to worry about it all day...and in my experience you can't find that in lip products.

Enter my BFF and fellow fashonista Sarah. Sarah is perhaps the one person I know who has more products than I do (she recently revealed to me she has 6 different shampoos in her shower...) and so I definitely trust her opinion when she lets me know about something she really likes. This weekend she introduced me to YSL's latest creation, the Glossy Stain. If you've been a long time reader you know that I've had a lot of success with YSL. It's definitely a quality product (just look at the price) but well worth it!

While we were getting ready on Saturday, Sarah told me I had to use her new product before we went out. Never one to pass up trying something new (especially from YSL) I obliged. The stain goes on like a gloss, but here's the trick...you can't rub the stain in or smack your lips for approximately 30-60 seconds to let the stain seep in and dry. I know...so counterintuitive, but the results were proof that this product is exactly what I have been searching for. Sarah had two shades - coral and berry - which I adored...really great colors for the fall. And here's a secret that you may not realize...berries and violets that have blue in them actually give the illusion that your teeth are super white! Kill two birds with one stone.

So thanks to Sarah I'm hoping to hit up Sephora this weekend in Indianapolis and pick a few up for myself. I liked it better when I was making her buy new products...I'll be billing you later Sarah!

Fashionable, Fun, and Gadget Friendly Accessories - a MUST!

As I sit here in the library waiting for my student (I tutor in my "free time"; what can I say, I'm a person of many talents...and in need of shopping money) I'm concerned by the upcoming generation. Seriously, I could not tell these kids apart if you asked me to.

Off to the corner sits the group of girls who are obviously "cool" but are trying to demonstrate that they are "too cool" to care if they are "too cool." All of them are wearing your standard pair of hooker sweatpants...yeah you know, the glittery pair that says PINK all over the derrière and costs you an arm and a leg. All I know is that in the 90s there were sponges, and puffy paint. Just saying...

Any way, it made me consider how much I hate having the same stuff that everyone else has. Granted, in Fort Wayne, Indiana it's not too difficult to stand out fashionably considering most wardrobes consist of your standard pair of Wrangler's and a NASCAR t-shirt but I simply hate when I get something new that I'm so excited about and then I see 3 people with the same thing - the nerve!

Well, when it comes to gadget accessories I am always searching for something that makes me stand out as individual. I'll pass on the bedazzled cases or the branded cases (in my opinion, you are wasting a lot of money to prove something here...to whom, I'm not sure) or even the bulky cases that swear to protect your device until the end of eternity. Yawn. Give me something fun and enticing that most people won't have. Your accessories should show off your personality, not demonstrate that you are a brand freak or like too much glitter.

I currently am rocking this Petunia iPhone case and I love it so much. It's simple and elegant and it goes with everything. It's bold without being BOLD and to be honest, I think the case protects my phone just as well as many of those other cases (otterbox anyone?). I mean, if I dropped $50 on an ugly case, why not drop $35 on a case I actually like!

Blake Lively - Celebrity Fashionista of the Month

In honor of her recent nuptials (kudos to you, Mrs. Ryan Reynolds!) it's hard to believe that Blake Lively has not graced us with her presence on the blog. Let's face it, when Karl Lagerfield and Christian Louboutin think you're the 21st century version of Grace Kelly...you run with it.

It's her striking appearance that has allowed her to grace the presence of every fashion house's campaigns and spring runway shows...however, it's her charm that has won over the hearts of everyone who matters - including little old me.

Blake has definitely been the breakout star of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Gossip Girls series, and it appears that she isn't going anywhere soon. Ms. Lively (or Mrs. Reynolds...who knows what she is going by these days!) is gorgeous dressed up or dressed down...and her cellphone is definitely filled with the right contacts. I definitely don't think we'll be seeing her on the Worst Dressed List any time soon...

Argan Oils and Balms - the Miracle Product for those dry months!

With the colder weather approaching and the lack of moisture in the air I can already feel my skin drying up...yuck! I don't know about you, but there's absolutely nothing I hate more than dry, cracked skin. Not only is it painful, unbecoming, and a mess (flakes - yay!) but it causes every lady to have to change up their beauty regiment. However, don't you get tired of having to buy several products to cure the same thing? You need something for your face, your body, your lips...that adds up fast!

Well, I recently came across a new product put out by supermodel Josie Maran's cosmetic line that was infused with Argan Oil. If you're a nerd like me, you originally read the title wrong and were concerned to see a product with Argon (you know, that noble gas that's actually an asphyxiant...i.e not good) in it, but after I reread the title my nervousness subsided. I decided to look into this "Argan" which is actually the name of the tree that the oil comes from in the land of Morocco. Apparently it's liquid gold there, so I figured it couldn't be that bad...

While I am sometimes skeptical to buy a product endorsed by a celebrity, I have to admit that when it comes to beauty products I figure that models have probably seen their fair share and must have good idea of what works and what doesn't. So, I decided to give a few of the products a try. However, my favorite go to product is the Argan Oil Balm.

The balm is the perfect combination of soothing moisture without the greasy nature of some oils and lotions. What I like best about it is that I can use it everywhere...I carry one with me in my purse to help my hands and elbows as well as my lips. I also do a ritual before I go to bed where I make sure my feet, hands, and lips stay moisturized. It's not cheap, but 6 months later I'm still on my first container of Argan Balm. All-in-all, I'd say it's one of the best beauty investments I've ever made.

To New Beginnings and Boots Galore!

Hello my faithful friends and followers - it has been some time since our last discussion on the latest and greatest in fashion.

For those of you who know me personally, you know that 2012 has not exactly been my year. My track record for hospital visits continued to grow (even out of state!) but lead to two medical diagnoses that were years in the making. This in turn caused me to adjust my life and begin a gluten free lifestyle and focus more on being very health conscious...which has had its ups and downs.

However, the big shock came most recently when my husband of 2 years and I separated after an indiscretion on his behalf.

I have to admit, it's been a pretty dark year but I'm starting to see the possibilities that come with a fresh start...and there's certainly something that could use some revamping - my closet! Over the last year, the medical visits and stress of every day life definitely put my fashion forward attitude on the bench for a few games - but now I'm ready to get back in and give myself the makeover I deserve.

I've always adored the classically chic look of a good pair of boots - seriously, they give any outfit a boost. However, I have been cursed with these calves that any gymnast would envy...oh, and did I mention I'm probably 5'4" on a good day? Basically, I'm not made for the look that I so envy on every lady with legs for days...grr! Fortunately for me, the Fashion Gods and I were aligned for this fall season because shorter boots and shall I say, "booties" are back! Thank YOU! I might finally have a chance...

As you've probably already realized, I have great taste...which just happens to be very expensive as well. I swear if there were a table of boots my favorite pair will always be the pair with a few more digits than I find necessary for my bank account. Why do beautiful, supple, gorgeous boots have to be so darn expensive?

One brand of boots that I am always drawn to is Frye. Seriously, this brand has got it all right...I mean, can you think of many brands that can combine a cowboy, classic, edgy style into one boot without you thinking the boot has multiple personality disorder? There's just one con...these boots are investment pieces. If you're like me, you care for your closet like it's your first born child...and therefore you get a return. For me, a classic boot is a good investment because I know I'll get my money's worth...but emphasis on the classic. Here's one of the pairs I've got my eye on...

The color allows for combinations with most palletes, and the height and strap allows you to dress them up or down. Normally these brands offer a selection of styles that will work for most wardrobes without causing you to miss a meal...or seven.

Beach Baby - Old Navy Accessories for Fun in the Sun!

Recently a few friends and I received the opportunity from Old Navy's Style Council to peruse our local store for the latest and greatest in beach accessories. Not only were we supposed to critique the selection and like ability of the line, but we also got to take some goodies home. It was a great day, and I just couldn't wait to show you what we found...

Sarah (below) has an easy breezy bohemian meets romantic style mixed in with a little boldness. As you can see, she is an accessory queen! So, this task was made for her. I love the oversized sunglasses she chose - they are bold and are actually navy blue! Not everyone can pull that style off... I'm also a big fan of the bag she chose. On the hanger I wasn't so fond of it, but we all agreed it grew on us in outside in the light (plus it looks great with her dress). And how could you forget Old Navy's staple flip flops? Sarah went with bright pink...definitely a fun shade!

Vic has a very classic taste with an edge. I love that the accessories she chose actually go well with her current outfit...except for the crossbody bag. One downfall to our "take home certificate" was that you were unable to take home any items on clearance and it just so happened that most of their beach bags were just that...on clearance. We originally opted for straw totes like the one below, but she ended up having to go with the woven crossbody in the picture.

In the end, the crossbody may be more functional for nights on the town, but not quite as beauty!

And of course I can't forget my picks. My style could probably be described as simple with a twist. I adore bold prints but prefer to pair them with pieces that can be mixed and matched with just about anything. I went for this fun chevron beach towel, woven hobo, and neutral sunglasses. All of these items (besides the beach towel) are probably pieces I wouldn't normally pick out at a higher end store - which is what makes Old Navy so great because you can take more of a risk without the blow to your wallet.

But since I hate to rub it in that we had such a great time finding all of these goodies, I can't leave my readers empty handed. Taking Care of your Pairs - the best stuff for denim!

Recently, I was given the opportunity to try out Woolite's Extra Dark Care detergent through Crowdtap. (Side bar, but if you haven't joined this site yet - please do. You get to network with some awesome brands and try the latest and greatest stuff for free!) Any way, Woolite has been campaigning recently about the Extra Dark Care detergent and how great it is for preserving your favorite denim!

As I've mentioned before, denim is one of those investment pieces that when you find the right fit - you've got to get them. I have $20 to $200 jeans...but if they are my favorite I want to wear them forever!

My latest pair is this super comfy pair of Jag Jeans. What I love the most about this denim is that they are casual enough for the weekend, but are professional looking so that I can wear them to work. Part of the reason for that is the awesome wash - which is dark enough to create a perfectly slimming silhouette.

So in comes Woolite Extra Dark Care. Since I had the free sample, I figured I should make use of it. And...I was pleasantly surprised to see the results. Where I normally get some run out or areas where the dye is no longer consistent, my jeans looked brand spanking new. A little bit goes a long way!

Skincare - One of the Few Places You May Want to Spend a Few Extra Bucks!

These days it's overwhelming to pick out a skin care regiment. With random celebrities promising you brand new skin overnight and new fads popping up every single day it's hard to know what's best for your skin.

Recently, a guy near and dear to my heart, came to me because he had the breakout blues. However, like most guys he wasn't willing to go run to Sephora to get an expert's advice - he was just using whatever stuff he could find at the local grocery. Don't get me wrong, the grocery store has some great finds, but many skin care products just aren't cutting it and he was seeing no change in his skin.

Fortunately, he came to the right person. I have had flare up skin since probably the 4th grade, and have probably tried every skin care line you can think of. What I've found is that most don't work for my combination skin - they either don't get rid of the oil or dry me out! So, after years of experience here are my do's and don'ts on skin care products - with a list of many of my favorites. Don't let the price tags fool you...if you use many of these products the right way they can last for 6-months to a year. And...that's a whole lot of piece of mind!

One of the first things I asked my friend was if his face wash or toner was turning his towels strange colors. He replied that they were definitely turning colors. Well, what most people don't realize is the secret to many skin care lines is lots of bleach and alcohol. While these won't hurt you, in most cases they don't get rid of your acne by treating it, but seek to dry out those pesky zits. Problem? Yeah, they do that to your entire skin. It dries your skin out so much that once your skin gets a little oil guess what? The zits are back. These products will strip your skin and cause redness and puffiness. So, read the labels! While words like "organic" and "natural" may have caused you to steer clear in the past, they may actually be worth looking into.

Secondly, make sure you use products in the right order. Someone recently told me they didn't understand why they couldn't get rid of their acne. However, after questioning them they had the right products but weren't using them as directed. It sounds silly, but if you pop a zit and then try to use your toner to calm down the inflamed region, you're only spreading the bacteria that just came out of your pore.

Lastly, if you are a lady, invest in make-up remover. It doesn't have to be top of the line make-up remover (I actually prefer Sephora's totally affordable $10 bottle below), but you do need some. Why? Well, if you have heavy eye make-up on and simply try to use your cleanser to remove it, you'll end up using twice as much cleanser and won't fully clean your face - causing a breeding ground for bacteria and oil to get trapped and have a zit pop up by morning. If washing your face isn't your strong suit, then invest in a face brush. While I have not tried the over-the-counter brushes, I love my Clarisonic and the best part is that any product can go on the brush. You'll get a deep clean and softness that you won't feel after just a quick wash.

If you're looking for an all-in-one cleanser, try Philosophy's Purity. It's one of the most affordable cleansers and the `6oz bottle will last you a year if you use it two times a day. This product is the perfect every day cleanser for the person who wants to keep it simple.

One of my favorite natural brands available at many drugstores and groceries is MyChelle dermaceuticals. When I found out I had Celiac's disease, I had to get rid of a few of my favorite products and turned to this brand for some gluten free relief. I'm a huge fan of the White Cranberry Cleanser - it's gentle and controls oil which is perfect for summer weather. And, at a totally affordable $10/bottle it won't break the bank!

If you're looking for oil control in the t-zone or all over there are a few products that are great. Depending on how oily your skin gets, you want to proceed with caution. I use some of my deeper cleansers or exfoliators just 1-2 times a week so I don't dry out my skin. One of my favorite lines for oil control is Kiehl's White Clay - the Deep Pore Cleanser is a God send. You will definitely feel this product working, and at only 1-2 times a week it will last forever! Just remember a small bit goes a long way!

One of my other favorites for oil control is from a high end line called La Mer. This product was recommended to me by one of the ladies at Nordstrom, and if I had known the price I probably would have never purchased it. However, 6 months later I've used only 1/4 of the tube and love how it control my oil. The best part? It's a cleaning foam that works great with a brush system or just a little friction from your hands. I use 1/2 a dime size and have enough for my whole face - one of the best investments I've made!

And lastly, for an every day cleanser that smells great, feels great, and does great things try Fresh Soy Face Cleanser. This gentle cleanser leaves your face super soft - and it's French! Ooo la la!

Just remember, even if you have genetically flawless skin (like my mother, ugh! thanks, dad!) you still need to take care of it! Damage to your skin is irreversible so treat it well!

Outfit Breakdown - Race Day!

Calling all race fans! Race Day is just around the corner and just because some people will be sporting...less clothing than normal...doesn't mean you can't look flawless but be comfortable at the same time.

Now even if you have someone to impress, Race Day is not the time to break out those new wedges you've been dying to wear...but you may not want to show up in your Jeff Gordon get up either (plus, he's Nascar...duh!). What you'll want to do is dress for the occasion...and be sure that if your clothes did get dirty or sweaty you're not going to yell at your neighbor in the in field "Hey this is dry clean only!"

Below I've put together a great race day look for just under $75. By looking at some of my favorite affordable retail shops, I've combined some basics (that you may already have in your closet) with a little pop of color to keep you looking fresh all day.

I'm a huge fan of these shorts from Old Navy, and the bow detail and fresh navy color make it a staple for your summer wardrobe. This style can be dressed up or down, so for race day throw on your favorite racerback tank for more coverage and lots of comfort. I love this style from Penney's because the straps aren't too thick - making it less likely that you'll end up with super crazy tan lines!

Instead of your usual flip flops, opt for a sporty espadrille like this version from Airwalk for Payless. There will be lots of traffic off the track as well, so you'll want to protect your tootsies (and your recent pedi) as much as possible!

Lastly, throw on some fun accessories to give your outfit a twist. I'm a big fan of these rubber Ray Ban Wayfarer knock offs from Target - only $12.50! Then you won't have to feel bad if the bright color doesn't go with everything (although I love my bright shades!). For all of the "food and drinks" you may be lugging in, pick up a shopper's tote like this one from Forever 21. The fun print adds spunk to any outfit, and for $1.50 you won't be discouraged if you leave it behind. A great pair of earrings (I recommend studs so you don't lose them) and a fun bangle like this one from Forever 21 gives you the extra edge so that makes you look effortless.

Comfort? Check. Inexpensive? Check. Ready for racing? Oh yeah...

Got the Blues?

Blue tones are everywhere - especially for your nails! And I have to say, I'm loving the way they look on everyone's skins. Whether they are jewel tones or baby blues, these colors are adding a little flare to every outfit.

My favorite? I love "Go Overboard" from Essie's 2012 Summer Collection. The color is so rich, and a little bit goes a long way. The way this pictures looks shows it with more green tones, but it's actually much darker than shown here. I'm in love...

If you've got a good tan go for something more demure like Coat Azure or Barbados Blue. They will bring out the bronze your skin is showing off in the summer months.

Fashion Star - Worth the Hype?

For over a year now we have been hearing the hype about Fashion Star, NBC's latest reality series with a Project Runway-esque vibe. While I was skeptical (Jessica Simpson as a fashion mentor...not exactly my idea of Tim Gunn...) I still had to watch - thank goodness for DVR because this lady can't make it past that 10pm hour.

First of all, I have to give the creators a hand for at least trying to diversify themselves from other fashion shows out there. Let's face it, when Bravo sold Project Runway to Lifetime and decided to revamp the show they may as well have called it Project Runway 2.0. However, Fashion Star looks more at how an item will actually sale in the retail world by having buyers from 3 pertinent stores (Saks, H&M, and Macy's) bid on items that the store would be willing to sale. This year's competition took place last summer and I was so confused as to why that was. Then I realized - it was so they had time to manufacture the clothes! That's right, the items that the buyers bid on are available online and in stores the next day - my favorite aspect of the show. Don't you hate on Project Runway with Rami has draped the most exquisite cocktail dress and you never see it again? Boo!

All positives aside, I must say that Fashion Star should be more like "Amateur Hour" in my opinion. Perhaps it's because the show is only on its first season, but most of the talent seems new to the fashion world and very few have been consistently successful. Those that have though, have earned their spot in the final 3. My favorite? Kara Laricks. Not only is her story unique (she was at one time a closeted lesbian elementary teacher) but her design esthetic of menswear inspired pieces manages to have just the right touch of modern details.

And who could forget Ronnie Escalante? Named by John Varvatos as the "dark horse" Ronnie has come up in the past few weeks as the buyers and mentors favorite designer. Me? I'm not so sure. While I usually like the cut of his pieces, he seems to have trouble picking fabrics? He did a women's suit this past week in a floral print that looked like it belonged more on the windows then on your bottom.

Nzimiro Oputa is the last finalist, and while his designs were strong initially, I believe he is in the finals because he brings a menswear perspective. His style is very Brooks Brothers with a European twist, and most men I know wouldn't be wearing what he's selling...but then again, I do live in Indiana...

The finale airs next Tuesday, May 15th on NBC. Before then, check them out their designs at H&M, Macy's, and Saks. The winning designer is supposed to be able to appeal to all retailers, which as you can see could be pretty challenging for three places known for completely different options. Either way, I'm interested to see how the show turns out and if it will come back. Personally? I say they clean house. I don't know about you, but I love a designer collaboration when it saves me some dough. Recently, many stores have started offering special limited time collections from your favorite high end designers at a more affordable price. Here are a few that are on my radar that I couldn't help but share with all of you!

Beat the Brass - Renew Your Color Without a Stop at the Salon

Now, while I hate to make assumptions, I would guess that most of you out there have had your color done a few times in your life. Well, with summer approaching it's easy for your color to lose that glow you achieve after just having it done. Rather than going back every few weeks to renew that look, why not use a product that will give you that "just left the salon look."

Rita Hazan, Celebrity Colorist, has recently come out with her Foaming Gloss product that promises to take out the brassiness and have your locks looking shiny and new.

For $26, it's much cheaper for most of then hitting up the salon again. Just be sure to pick the right shade for you...if you don't have golden tones, you definitely don't want to pick that shade.

So don't put the ball cap on just yet - renew your color and shine and have everyone asking how your color always looks great!

Buying on eBay - not as Scary as it Seems...

Many people are surprised to learn that I not only use eBay for selling some of my old items, but I also buy some of my higher end items there as well.

Here's a great example: You walk into Saks Fifth Avenue and fall in love with a M Missoni cocktail dress. It's gorgeous, unique, and everything you are looking for in a statement piece for your friend's summer wedding. You try it on, and it fits like a glove...and then you look at the price tag - $650. Say what? With a few months until your friend's wedding you scour the Saks website and store praying for a sale...of epic proportions. However, the next time you head to the store your dress is gone and with only a week to go you are freaking out about what you will wear to your friend's wedding. Relax. With a little planning and your best car salesman attitude I can get you that dress, probably in brand new condition, for a fraction of the price.

Since college I have been super savvy when it comes to purchasing items that I know I won't get much use out of - high end cocktail dresses, fancy heels, and even jewelry. I always want to look unique and put together at certain events...and my worst fear is being the girl at prom whose dress is also on several other girls. So, a few years ago when I was prepping for a college formal I went to Nordstrom and bought the prettiest dress I could find...that was way outside my budget. While I looked amazing the night of, I never wore that dress again and I realized that I had gotten caught up in the drama of the dress rather than thinking about the worth of the dress.

At that point I was still an eBay novice, but I started to think that if I sold a lot of my items on eBay that other people probably did as well. The next time I had a special event coming up I did my research. I went to some of the high end retailers I loved and tried on loads of dresses. I examined them all closely and using my notepad (every girl who doesn't use a smartphone should carry one!) and copied the designer, style of the dress, the price, and the size that fit me best. Satisfied that I had done enough digging, I went to eBay and started searching for the dresses. Low and behold, there were tons of dresses there - some the same style but different prints or colors and a variety of sizes.

Here's where the wheeling and dealing comes in - a lot of eBay sellers sell full time. It's there job, and they can't buy more inventory until they sell their others. Whether they work for the brand, live close to an outlet mall, or just have a killer discount they get the styles at a fraction of the price and want to turn a profit on ebay. However, if an item has been on sale for awhile they want to get rid of it. This is what I normally do if I have time. I "watch" the item for at least a week. A lot of items are buy it now, and if no one has purchased it in a week there's a good chance you can deal with them. In that case, message the buyer and offer them a lower price. For example, if a dress is $150, offer $115. that gives you both room to negotiate and get a great deal. Usually buyers will offer the dress at 50% off, give or take, so $115 would be over 60% off the retail price! In some auctions there is a best offer button available where you can negotiate, and others are like live auctions where you can have a bidding war with other buyers. Be careful not to get caught up in the adrenaline rush of bidding back and forth. Rather than pushing the price up days before auction end, wait until the last few hours if you have time. More than likely other bidders will have forgotten about the item.

Honestly, this works! And the best part? If you hate it or wear it once, you can turn around and sell it on eBay as well - sometimes even making a profit! It's an awesome way to look fabulous without feeling guilty. I've purchased sunglasses, handbags, shoes, dresses - you name it!

Now, there is one warning. If a deal seems too good to be true, proceed with caution. While eBay has gotten much better about keeping fraudulent people off the site, many people will sell counterfeit items. So, if a Louis Vuitton bag is $50, don't expect it to be authentic. Check the sellers feedback to see if other sellers have been pleased. Anyone with a feedback rating under 97% should be avoided. And don't be afraid to ask questions...if you want to see a receipt or ask if authenticity is guaranteed than ask. That's like an insurance policy in case issues arise and you have to open up a case with eBay.

Lastly, many sellers have opened up there outlet stores on eBay - check out Neiman Marcus Last Call, Coach Factory, Under Armour, and other retailers for awesome deals on some of your favorite styles and brands.

There's nothing wrong with getting a good deal and looking great - in fact, I think I love my items better when I know that I paid less than the person next to me!

BIg Girl in a Skinny World - A Must Read for the Curvy Lady

While everyone else is joining the high tech world of Nooks, Ipads, and Kindles, I still enjoy the feel of a good magazine. However, I must "thank" those of you who have moved on to these devices because magazine subscriptions are super cheap and several years ago I subscribed to nearly every fashion/fitness/gossip magazine out there.

Even though I love my fashion magazines, I get annoyed with some of the super editorial looks that feature women with abnormal measurements in clothing that the Queen probably couldn't afford. Honestly, who wants a $20,000 motorcycle jacket? Love you Gucci, but when the price says, "upon request" this girl is out.

That's why I found it so refreshing when Marie Claire started featuring a monthly column from their own Nicolette Mason. Mason is unlike most of the women working in this superficial industry; she is plus size and proud! Each month she takes on a new topic that often finds curvier women shying away when it comes to fashion. May's issue featured Nicollette sharing her own former fears about shorts. While shorts have emerged all over the runways, most of them are a wee bit, well...short, and nothing is less chic than a lady pulling her shorts down every time she takes a step!

Check out her blog and learn more about her fashion finds. Even if you're a skinny twig, some of her advice is applicable to all of us. With her personal touch it's hard not to identify.

So the next time you're at the Supermarket skip the Cosmo (do you really need to know how to make your man hot in bed...I mean...he's a guy...he probably doesn't care...) and pick up Marie Claire. With fashion advice from Tim Gunn and Nina Garcia, it's hard not to see that Marie Claire is heading in the right direction when it comes to fashion for all!

Big Style, Small Price - Designers that Give You More Bang for your Buck

I've always been jealous of my friends that live in larger cities because they always pick up the most unique items that looks super chic and expensive but are completely affordable. I don't know about you, but there's nothing I despise more than going to the mall and seeing 3 people with the same top on. It's funny, because at 14 I wanted to look like everyone else (Abercrombie & Fitch all the way!) and as an adult I want to be completely unique from my peers. I want to enter a room and have someone say, "wow I love your dress" and then be able to say, "yes, and I got it so cheap!" - there is nothing more gratifying than feeling like you got your moneys worth. Well, some of us may never have the opportunity to peruse the local high end consignment shops in search for someone's 1970s Missoni dress but with the internet there is a way that some of us can still look chic without having to give in to the monotony of so many stores these days.

For those of you who have been in a coma for the last year, you may not have heard that Kate and Pippa Middleton have emerged as the style elite. However, unlike some of their peers they like to mix up high end pieces with more affordable items as well. There favorite go to brand? Zara. This international brand has just recently made the move to the States, and for almost a year us Americans have been able to peruse the shop online. Seriously, this was big stuff for someone like me. For the price, Zara's quality and tailoring is impeccable and most looks are classic enough that you will get several seasons out of it. Here are some of my favorites for spring.

Topshop is another fabulous brand that offers some cutting edge designs for a much more reasonable price than premiere designers. Many celebrities have been seen at high end events wearing pieces from the line, while others have collaborated to create designs. Best part - free shipping over $100...and since it's coming from the UK, it's well worth the discount!

So if you're tired of the usual mall stops try out these two online havens. One recommendation - check the size charts! European sizing is very different than US sizing and many silhouettes are more narrow. If you have to change your size, don't sweat it - just send it back and order something new.
