I don't truly believe we ever stop learning in life and that is very true when it comes to writing. Even our own writing has lessons to teach if we only take the time to listen to them. For example, Born of Blood, my debut novel coming out on March 23, was loaded with lessons which I assume is true for all authors when they publish their first story. When it came time to write my second novel I started with the idea of continuing the story but to also focus on another aspect of my writing. For the sequel I focused more on opening up the characters to the readers. Allowing the reader to see inside the hearts and minds of my characters was a great exercise in added depth to their development. I believe I achieved that and the story was made better by building on that element. As I wait to hear back from Muse on my sequel and while I put the finishing touches on Born of Blood I am writing my third novel. Again, I always want to deliver the best story I can develop but I also turned my attention to a different aspect of writing. This time I'm attempting to express more emotion through all the senses, not just what the eyes see.

Why do this? Why attempt to change your writing style? You should find your style and stick to it right? I don't see this as changing my writing style but rather polishing it. The goal is to deliver an experience that harnesses the senses, emotions, thoughts and settings in such a way that the reader is totally ensnared in the story itself. In order to do that we, as authors, must identify the weaknesses in our writing and improve it. I can tell you, being a new author, I have a few weaknesses to work on.I know, it hits our pride to think that our writing may be weak in some aspect or another but it is the truth and it is something we should identify. The challenge is also fun to the author as well. It helps to keep things fresh when pushing the limits of our skills.

I suppose you could blame Stephen King for my writing practices. I was listening to one of his interviews and he pointed out something that really stuck with me. To this day he pushes himself to write something better than the last even if the books are of a different genre. He explores topics that may not scare the masses but will scare an age group or targeted audience. Dreamcatchers is the example he gave. To many, when they go to the bathroom it is no big deal but, as he said, when you get older and your body changes there are things you have to pay attention to. Seeing something your not supposed to see in the toilet is one of those things. I know, that might be a gross example but you get the idea of what he is talking about. For me pushing my writing skill is focusing on different aspects of writing. For Stephen King it is taking a real fear, like finding signs of possible health problems when you go to the bathroom, and building upon it to develop a story full of frightening imagination.

Here is the truly fascinating part about all of this. It relates to my earlier question - You should find your style and stick to it right? This is correct, once we find our style we run with it. The beauty of it is this; the style of our writing or voice does not change as we sharpen and polish our skills. I noticed this while writing my third novel, there are telling signs and innuendos that declare the story as mine. Think of it as a recording of your voice. You record your voice and play it back, it sounds rough but it's still your voice. You go through and clean it up so it sounds better, still your voice. Finally you go through and fine tune it so it sounds crystal clear. You polished and sharpened the recording until it was as perfect as you could get it but it is still your voice.

We, as authors, explore many aspects of writing and writing topics. We should, that's what keeps the blood flowing. Readers however, see the finished product. They aren't able to get behind the scenes and see where we pushed ourselves. That doesn't change the overall goal of delivering the ultimate reading experience.

The silver lining shines brightest when outlining the darkest cloud.

Love is a beautiful thing. The innocence of high school love is the stuff of romance. When high school sweethearts bond and marry everyone is thrilled and excited. But, sadly to say, many of these marriages of high school sweethearts go awry…many switch from bliss to nightmare. Even in situations like this there is hope; a hope that transcends our understanding at times but still there. In ‘Unheard Cries – A Marriage Horror’ we see, first hand, the violence of a bad marriage and the rise of hope from that bleak shadow.
‘Unheard Cries – A Marriage Horror,’ is the account of Emma and Aaron. Emma, the sweet girl with a mild wild side and Aaron, the black sheep of his family with a hot temper were destined for marriage as they were never apart in high school. But not everyone is thrilled about their relationship as Emma’s parents are well aware of Aaron’s temper and rebel attitude. Emma is fully aware of who Aaron is and feels that she can change him. As the years pass Aaron becomes more violent toward her and their children. Will Aaron change? What will happen to Emma and her children? What will it take to stop the horror of this dysfunctional marriage?
From the first word, Joyce Mitchell delivers a story packed full of emotion and passion. ‘Unheard Cries – A Marriage Horror’ will pull your heart strings as you relate and connect to the mistakes and triumphs of Emma and her family. Even Aaron, as he ages, is a character that will hold your attention as you hope for real change in him. With each passing page, it is virtually impossible not to feel remorse, anger, sadness, doubt, hope, and relief. The more you read the more your heart goes out to those suffering and living in situations similar to what unfolds here.

The strength of ‘Unheard Cries – A Marriage Horror’ lies in the reality of the story itself. But buried in all the horror and sadness is the fires of hope, love, and life, this is truly inspiring. I recommend ‘Unheard Cries – A Marriage Horror.’
Celebrating with Born of Blood.

This article is number 500 for The New Author. I remember when I first started this blog. I never thought I would get to 500 articles and over 30,000 visitors. This has been an amazing journey. To make it even better I have a new book excerpt to share from Born of Blood. With that in mind, I decided to join the two together. Here is the second book excerpt from Born of Blood. Enjoy!

The rider’s head swiveled as she searched the hillside for any sign of pursuit. Wet mud flew high in the air from her horse’s hoofs as they thundered down the rutted trail. She shifted her eyes for a split second to look at the bundle snugly bound against her midsection.
“Just a little further now,” she whispered.

The cold night air whistled past her ears, but sweat continued over her brow. The barren trees reached out with their finger-like limbs, threatening to rip her off her mount. At the last second, she swerved her horse down a side path. A glimmer of light in the distance called to her, and a burst of speed brought the weary rider to a ramshackle farmhouse with a single light glowing from a lone window.

The smoke from the fire was a welcoming sign of warmth as she approached the door. A soft knock, and it cracked opened. An old woman gazed beyond the traveler’s shoulder for a moment until she stepped aside and waved her in.
“You sure you weren’t followed girl?” a gray-haired man asked from a seat in the corner next to the fire.
“Yes, I’m sure,” the rider replied as she dropped her saddlebag on the table.
The old woman shut and latched the door. “Now, Pa, leave her be. She’s been on a long ride.”
“Well, if’n she was followed, it will be for naught.”
“I said I wasn’t followed.”
Pa stared at the girl for a moment and nodded before repacking his pipe with tobacco. “Then move over here to the fire and warm your bones.” He indicated the hearth.

Elizabeth stood close to it and absorbed the warmth into her stiff fingers. As she warmed, she removed her hat, scarf, and cloak, but the bundled blanket remained against her midsection. I hope I’m doing the right thing. She turned to the old couple.
“I know this is a burden on you. There are some supplies in the saddlebag. It’s not much, but it will last a few days.”
“That witch has done enough horror in these parts, so it’s the least we can do.” Pa spat.
“Well, let’s have a look,” requested Ma.
Elizabeth detached the bundle and handed it to her. With experienced hands, she pulled back a portion of the blanket. The angelic face of a sleeping baby girl greeted her.
“Oh, isn’t she darlin’.” Ma cooed at the babe. “Come look, Pa.”
Pa moved around the table and stared at the baby.
“I’d say that’s a baby, all right.” With that, he moved back to his seat.
“Never you mind him. I know him like my own hand, and he loves this little bundle already.”
Elizabeth gave a slight smile. “I knew she would do well here, but mind the countess will never stop looking for her once she figures things out.”
“You think she will?” Ma asked.
Elizabeth bundled up for the journey back. “I’m positive,” she exclaimed as she walked out into the night.

****
The elderly couple stood in the doorway with the baby and watched as Elizabeth disappeared down the darkened path.
“Did you see what that woman did to Elizabeth’s face?” Pa asked.
“You’ve heard the sayings, Pa. Now you know some are true. She’s a brave girl, doing what she did.”
“Yes, but it might cost her more then she wants to pay.”
The baby squirmed in her blanket, and their conversation shifted to her and keeping her safe.

* * * *
Elizabeth arrived back at the castle an hour before sunrise. It would be a long day, but if all went well, it would be worth it. She corralled the horse and crept to the kitchen through the back of the stable yard. With silent steps, she climbed the stairwell, ever mindful of other servants who, to find good favor, would notify the countess. Her door swung open on oiled hinges. With growing confidence, she stepped into the comforting darkness of her room, but her hand stopped on the sconce where the torch should have been. Panic began anew as she patted along the wall, fingers trembling.
“Looking for this?” A voice startled her as the torch came to life. The old gray stone walls dulled the red and orange glow from the flame.
Elizabeth straightened as she turned to face the countess. She dropped into a deep curtsy.
“Countess, I didn’t expect you up so early.”
The countess glared at the girl before a cold, heartless grin creased her face. “Oh, this is a special day,” she replied and moved to the window to gaze over the darkened countryside.
“Why is that, my lady?”
“Before we get to that, I would like to know why you took one of my horses out so late.”
Elizabeth froze as her mind raced for an excuse.
“I…uuummm…”
“Never mind. My newest addition is nowhere to be found on the same night you go for a joy ride. Isn’t that interesting?”
Tears ran down Elizabeth’s face. “Countess, I’m deeply sorry. I…”
The countess flew over from the window and stopped just as her nose touched Elizabeth’s.
“I have no time for a sniveling little whore like you,” she yelled.
She stepped back, took a deep breath and smoothed out her dress. “Look at me. You’ve got me all in a mess. You are right about one thing…you’ll be deeply sorry.”

Why? Because their "job" in truth is a combination of multiple jobs. Think about it and I'm sure you will agree, a stay at home mom works her butt off.

Authors share that similarity with housewives except we don't get that high of a recommended salary. One thing is a fact though, authors need to be prepared to wear many hats and when you move over to become a published author you get the honor to put on more hats. I can see the logic of quitting your job and working solely on writing. Not for the sake of writing but for the time it takes to do everything that surrounds writing and your published work. I know we have looked at it before but times are changing and as times change the more responsibilities fall on the author. It's not a bad thing but it is time consuming. It starts with writing, then we move to submitting it and sending out query letters. Of course, this is after we research publishers and agents who will look at new authors. The fun really starts when we cross that finish line and find a publisher. Then we really get some hats. Overnight we become an author, editor (or is it editor's assistant), marketer, promote, and social network specialist. On top of that we have the blog we have always worked on and enjoy running and...what was that other thing....hang on....oh yea, we have the job hat, cook hat, car repairman hat and countless others that could be there. That is a lot of hats.

The tough part of all this is, if you get rid of one hat, and it is the wrong hat, it could cause a domino effect with all the other hats. This is where priority and organization will come to the fore. They are both critical but how can you tell which hats you can get rid of and which you really need to keep?

Again, you have to look at your life but there might be some helpful suggestions to be found once we take a closer look. After you organize and prioritize all of your jobs then step back and look at the big picture. Stop right here for a moment. Don't panic when you see a to-do list a mile long. Just relax and trust in the organization you've set up. Next, remember there are 24 hours in a day and you need 8 hours (okay, maybe 6) and 8 hours at work. That leaves you with 8 ours to work with. A lot can be done in 8 hours. Back on topic, it is extremely difficult to get rid of a hat once you have the hat but we must remember to pace ourselves and when the time comes (and it will) to swallow our pride and ask for help.

I believe you cross a line when you have so many hats that you can't finish a project once you start it. That is a warning sign that you are spreading yourself to thin. If you make it to that point something has to give...either one of your hats or you. Which one is completely up to you but until we get to the point where our books are flying off the shelf and the royalty check covers everything there will always be two really big hats - work and writing. Then again, we have to go through the lean times and the crazy schedules to realize the opportunity to hand over more hats.

How many hats do you have?

Don't worry, it's not long but it does play a part in today's post.

There once was a charming couple who rented a rather nice home just outside of a small town. One day, while talking to the landowner, the man of the house asked if he could have permission to chop down twelve large trees in the front yard. The landowner agreed and so the man began chopping down the trees.

A few weeks past by and the townsfolk noticed that the man's wife was nowhere to be seen. They asked the man where she was and he replied "she is visiting her parents." A few more weeks pasted and they asked again in which he gave another reason why the woman wasn't there. Well, the townspeople began to wonder and become concerned so they called the police. The police came out, investigated the house and asked the man questions before leaving. The investigator stopped at the nearby diner for lunch and shared that he found nothing amiss in the house and doesn't have a clue as to the whereabouts of the women.

While the investigator talked a traveling salesman stepped into the diner and listened patiently. He came by when he could because they always purchased his steak sauce. When the investigator stopped talking the salesman spoke up and said "are you talking about the missing woman from the house up the road?" Of course everyone said yes.
"That is a strange man. He bought two large bottles of my sauce and heck one bottle would last him more than a month."
The investigator dropped his fork and looked at the man.
"That's the ending of this story," he said.
The waitress looked between them.
"But why did he chop down all those trees?" She asked.
The salesman fell onto the bar stool.
"To build up an appetite."

This is a very short story and I may have messed it up but it still displays many aspects of writing. Take for instance the ending, you have to think about it because the story teller does not come right out and tell you what happened to the woman. We don't even see what happened to the woman. We are given enough information to draw the conclusion the storyteller wanted us to come to. I also like that little actions and items combine together to provide what the reader needs to know. For example, the steak sauce was the key to the whole thing connecting together. I mean, chopping down a tree is meaningless until you combine it with a missing person and steak sauce. Granted, we don't know the why in this story but do we need to? If the purpose of the story is to deliver chills then the why will only get in the way of that. Actually, not knowing why but knowing that he did makes it even more disturbing.

I've been listening to a number of Alfred Hitchcock interviews and learned a great deal from them. One of which is his use of everyday actions and situations to deliver a desired emotion and thought. For example, you're reading a book and in that book a man is walking down a set of stairs but all you see is his hand gliding down the stair rail. If we stop right there then this is a mundane, boring, everyday activity. But what if we, as the reader, had a few clues to make us think this person is, in fact, the villain. It is not shown or stated that this person is about to do something bad but we know that something will.

I'm not sure though. It might just be that, in this day and age, readers want to see everything. They want to see if the villain escaped or died or if the woman had the baby with her one true love. I think that is why so many were upset with the ending of the Sopranos. We never saw Tony get shot but we were given plenty of information that suggests he was. I know that is a television show and not a book but it was the best example that came to mind.

Soon we will step into a new year with renewed hopes and dreams but more on that later. It is sad to think that there are individuals around us who fall into depression during this time of year. Be it the lose of a loved one, a job, a home or simply not being able to give the kids that big gift they really want people find themselves surrounded by negative thoughts and feelings during a time when joy and love should prevail.

This time of year should be one of smiles, laughs, and yes, reflection. What should we reflect on? Well, what we should not reflect on is the negative aspects of life. I know that can be difficult but we really should push those things out of our mind. With those thoughts and feelings out of the way what should we focus on? The positive aspects of our life. To begin, if you are reading this or chatting on Twitter, Facebook, and/or Google + then you are blessed with friends, electricity, and Internet access. Food and shelter are two others to be thankful for. Even if you are eating a microwave dinner, smile...some don't even have that. See what I mean, it's the simple things that truly make life and the holidays a blessing.

For us, as writers, we have a great opportunity this time of year. We can display our craft and give the gift of words to express to others what we feel and think. It is through this expression that we spread smiles, happiness, and joy. How could it possible get better than that? For example, have you ever received a Christmas card? For a split second you smiled and felt the joy. Have you delivered one and witnessed the expression of the reader? It is priceless to see other's joy. Our words can deliver so much. We should share our talents whenever possible. Who knows, it might just put a smile on a sad face and a touch of warmth in their heart.

There are so many blessings that surround us everyday. Writing is both a gift and blessing. Knowing and communicating with all of you is a gift, joy, and blessing. Sharing thoughts and ideas through this blog, my website, social networks, and yes even through my novels is a joy, gift, and major blessing. I thank all of you for sharing these many joys, gifts, and blessings with me.

It is my take on - The Night Before Christmas. The names I included in this poem are members of MuseItUp Publishing but it is also a little I offer to you during the Christmas season. So lean back, read and enjoy. If you find yourself laughing and/or smiling while reading then my job is done.

The Muse before Christmas

Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the net

Lea was frantic, trying to get everything set.

She posted the books in the bookstore with care,

In hopes that readers soon would be there.

Delilah was nestled all snug in her seat,

We’ve seen her covers, what a remarkable feat.

With Tiger, Suzannah, and all the rest,

Now we know why, MuseItUp covers are the best.

When out of the computer there arose such a clatter,

Litsa sprang from her chair to see what was the matter.

Away to the printer she flew with swift feet,

Reviewing the plans for next year’s retreat.

The Google search glistened on a screen what as snow

Publishers and agents, to many to know.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a new publishing house full of passion,

Family, joy and cheer.

What a wonderful house for new authors to take flight,

In no time at all I was called Sir Knight.

As I joined the forums to chat and greet,

Some amazing authors I did meet!

"Now Karen! now, Ro! now, Lin and Kat!

Go, Heather! Go, Ginger! Go, Nancy and Pat!

To the top of the lists! To the top of the Facebook wall!

Now write away! Write away! Write away all!"

As papers and notes that before the wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.

So to the computers these authors they flew,

With a mind full of stories, and characters too.

And then, in a twinkling, I saw a Kindle and Nook,

While downloading and syncing a new Muse eBook.

Horror, fantasy, romance, and genres for all,

Readers are happy, smiling and having a ball.

If your name is not mentioned, have no fear.

You are all included in this Christmas cheer.

Before I close, one thing more to say.

Remember the blessings on Christmas day.

We've discussed the first paragraph, the first line, the hook, and even the body. We even touched on developing the body and finally the importance of the ending. The ending of the book drew my attention once more because of it's complexity. Yes, I said complex.

A somewhat strange thought occurred to me while I was making notes and plotting my novel. You see, I have notes about my story and characters; I have developed the plot and settings but I stumbled on the ending. I can't actually say that. I know how the story ends, it is the conclusion that I'm having problems with. I know how I want the story to end but the actual conclusion is a little tricky. What is the difference between the ending of a story and the conclusion of a story?

To be honest, I'm not really sure about the difference myself but I do have my thoughts about it. To me the ending of a story draws together all the different threads of the plot into one big ball. When find out what happens, who did it, who won, and things of that nature. It is in this combining of plot threads that we find the conclusion. To me the conclusion is that very final scene. You know the one I'm talking about, it is that final moment when everything comes together and the reader finds satisfaction. Take, for example, a fantasy action novel - the ending would be reaching the destination of the long journey and confronting the enemy. The warriors or good face off with the warriors of evil. The conclusion is the outcome of that final battle. It is the triumph or failure of good and what that means to the world in which they are fighting.

Now back to my novel, I know who will be there at the end but I don't know how the conclusion will work out. I'm not really worried, I believe my characters will help me along the way. I can promise you this, the conclusion and ending of this novel will be a surprise for all of us. Then again, isn't that the fun of writing?

Adventure waits…all you have to do is start the journey.

With the failure of technology, power and the comforts of the twenty first century the surviving humans find themselves back in the days of horses and providing for themselves through hunting, fishing and gardening. Towns, families and groups now band together to form colonies behind protective walls as bandits and gangs travel throughout, looking for the next target to loot and pillage. It is a time when no one travels alone, strength is found in numbers.

Joshua Duncan, third generation of the Duncan family since the Decline, will soon be twenty one and with it an eager desire to explore. His destination, the ocean, is located over the horizon. After a successful hunt he tells his family his plans to leave and how long he will be gone. They are saddened but encourage him to go. His journey is delayed as he happens upon a settlement of elderly, women and children. Their own hunting party has been missing for weeks and food is low. Duncan stays with them for a time, helps gather food, and learns of the area. After leaving he journeys to the salt mines at Green River. What he discovers there is not opportunity but a tyrant, slaves, and a community in denial.

Things take a turn for the worse when Duncan finds a half starved man on the trail. The man is an escaped slave from the salt mines and, more importantly, part of the missing hunting party from the settlement Duncan left behind. How is Duncan going to help this man? How is he going to help the enslaved hunting party so they can get back to their families? Will he help or will he continue on his journey?

From the first word, J W Throgmorton delivers an action packed, thriller that mixes both science fiction and adventure. “Duncan (Green River)” will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last. With each passing page, it is virtually impossible not to get absorbed into Duncan’s quest and exploits. The more you read the more you feel the tension building as Duncan and his new found friends fight to free those enslaved and forced into labor.

The strength of “Duncan (Green River)” lies in the crisp action and strong characters. Duncan’s endearing qualities and morals capture your attention and connect with you quickly. It is easy to see him doing what is right, even in the most difficult situations. Author J W Throgmorton’s novel is a futuristic adventure of actions and thrills in every sense of the word. I highly recommend “Duncan (Green River)”.
I've often wondered if they were all up-tight individuals who pine over words and destroy you if you have a comma out of place. I often pictured them as old librarians with glasses riding the lower edge of their nose. As I said, I had no idea.

Things became a little more clear over the years as I talked to and interviewed editors. I even had a few as guest her on The New Author but still the behind the scenes look at the life of an editor seemed closed off. At times it felt like you needed to have a special identification card or secret handshake to truly get close to editors.

Like I said, I had no idea. All of that changed once I became published. I was assigned to two editors - one for content and a line editor. Yes, I have mention this before but even more changed once I began working with these two individuals. It was like Moses parting the Red Sea, the curtain opening so the actors could take a triumphant bow. I finally got close enough to an editor to actually see, first hand, what their work entails and at what lengths their passion drives them. I know that not all editors are the same. I can only base this article on the two I have worked with but I believe the experience has taught me enough to share.

Let me state first and foremost, there is no way I could be an editor. I will learn from them and try to implement their corrections and comments into my future writing but there is no way on this green earth that I could edit another person's manuscript. I applaud those that are editors because you are indeed special. What are the difference between the two? Why did I have a content editor and a line editor? Was my writing so bad that I needed not one but two?

First, I am more than happy to have two editors because that is two more sets of fresh eyes reading my novel. That can only be a good thing. Even better, they approach the novel from different directions but end up at the same location. That location being a completed, polished and ready to publish novel. The content editor looks at the plot, characters, flow, action, settings, and dialog. This editor will point out if your story runs flat or if it is running to fast. He or she (in my case she) will identify any plot wholes if there are any. But, as I learned, she also pointed out if I had breaks in my point of view. Let me just say that this is not an easy task. Dealing with point of views is something that takes a great deal of practice and focus. The next thing she pointed out that added a great deal to my novel was I needed to add more character feeling. As she said, I needed to open them up more. The reader needs to feel what they were feeling and know what they were thinking. Of course she also pointed out grammar issues that were found but to a large extent she was focused on the story. Once I was done with her comments and suggestions the novel took on a new level of completeness.

Now we switch gears to the line editor and before I go any further I will say that they have to be the most detailed and focused individuals walking to do this job accurately and efficiently. The line editor goes through each line of the novel and corrects the grammar, misspelled words, overuse of words, and/or missing words. Of course they too can find point of view and or story structure problems that need to be addressed but their main focus is on the grammatical side of editing. I wasn't prepared for what I would deal with when I got my novel from my line editor. The comments were so few but once I started going through the pages I realized that I needed to focus or I might just miss one of her corrections or suggestions. Do you have any idea how easy it is to overlook a deleted comma? I went through my novel twice before I sent it back to her for her second review.

In all of this both editors were encouraging and helpful. They always offered tips and comments as to why something was changed or something should be reworded or thought through again. They have always been very fast at responding to questions and I'm sure I asked some rather elementary questions. What I am most grateful for is their attitude, it wasn't the editor to author attitude but rather we are a team to make this novel the best it can be attitude. You know what, the team of my editors and me, we are doing just that. Born of Blood will shine because my editors have helped me greatly with making it the best novel it can be.

An editors job is not easy but I'm so glad they are there for us authors.

Growing and expanding in new and original ways.

In a nation where it is politically incorrect to talk about church and Christianity it is refreshing to see books on the market that shares the news of just that - today’s church. “The Most Influential Pastors In America” is one of those books. It goes beyond simply listing the fastest, largest and most impactful churches. It also provides a descriptive explanation of how these churches grew and expanded the congregation. Kindness, humility, joy, longsuffering – all are shown through actions and not preached with words.

Richard D. Young delivers this book with an educated and elegant hand. The descriptions and information contained on the pages of “The Most Influential Pastors In America” is greatly complimented by Richard’s care and passion.

Author Richard Young has completed a great deal of research to compile this comprehensive list of pastors and their efforts to share the good news. I applaud this effort as it shares the strategies and insights of the pastors who are reaching out to the multitude of young Americans and those most in need. It is a shining example of the love, hope, and kindness that was first perfected by the Lord. I feel comfortable in saying that “The Most Influential Pastors In America” is highly informative and thought provoking.

“The Most Influential Pastors In America” is a wonderfully insightful book detailing the techniques, strategies and direction of some of the most prolific churches in America today. The pages in this book will enlighten you to the expanse and reach of the church today. It provides both hope and inspiration to read about the demonstrations and examples of leading the lost to Christ through love and kindness. I recommend this book for everyone – Christians, nonbelievers and those with questions. It truly is uplifting.

Be careful what you look for...you might find it.

Gary and John Strake, two brothers with itchy feet and an unquenchable thirst for learning, adventure, and discovery. They each travel along their own path to discover new treasures but when Gary’s girlfriend calls John, concerned about his brother, their adventures and way of life take an interesting turn. Everything is set in motion with the discovery of tiny, oval shaped objects, gold colored and no larger than grains of rice. These objects are more than they appear, they hold many secrets. Where did they come from? What do they do?
As John travels to check on his brother he steps in the middle of a murder scene as Gary’s girlfriend is found dead in their home – her throat ripped out. Soon after the discovery Gary calls the sheriff who is killed by an unknown creature that attacks the Strake brothers who, in return, kill it. The creature is moved to a research facility where the brothers meet an unlikely source of help, resources, and, for John, a chance for romance. What will they discover when they study the creature? Is it of this earth?

As big as the mystery of the golden objects seem to be, there is a bigger discovery to be made. How did those golden objects get into the ground where Gary found them? Will the creatures that placed them there come back to collect?

From the first word, Darrell Bain delivers an action packed, thriller that mixes both science fiction and adventure. “Alien Seeds” will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last. With each passing page, it is virtually impossible not to get absorbed by the discovery and consequences of the little golden seeds and what they mean. The more you read the more you feel the tension building as the Strake brothers and their friends race against an alien species with unbelievable intelligence, and amazing strength.

The strength of “Alien Seeds” lies in the crisp plot, use of scientific terminology, and strong characters. The characters capture your attention quickly and connect with you quickly. It is easy to see the Strake brothers as those friends in the neighborhood who act crazy but really are intelligent. Author Darrell Bain’s novel is a true science fiction thrill ride in every sense of the word. Think Indiana Jones meets Men In Black but in the form of a book. I highly recommend “Alien Seeds” for anyone who enjoys aliens, creatures, intrigue, and a little romance mixed in.
As much as I enjoyed what Mr. King had to offer it was his wife that caught my attention. From her sharing with us the night a fan broke into their home with a fake bomb strapped to his chest to all the interesting things they have both experienced through his writing, it is her acceptance of his writing schedule that I find fascinating. Stephen King writes for fours hours a day every day. He takes two days off a year, Christmas and his birthday.

At first glance four hours doesn't seem like a long time but when you put it in the context of everyday of the year except for two days than you see how impressive and grueling that schedule can be. I write at night for about three to four hours but not every night and no way can I do it for that many days. I mean, I take at least one day off per week. I do understand where King is coming from though. I don't believe he writes at that schedule because he wants to, I think he has to. Allow me to explain, if I am like King in one way I believe it is this - when I go for a length of time (about three days) I become jittery. I become preoccupied by a story or an idea that starts hammering at me to come out. The longer I wait the harder it hammers at me. I think Mr. King experiences the same thing. I believe he has it so bad that he can only afford two days to not write at all.

I'm not sure how much he can write in four hours but it must be enough to satisfy his inner muse. For me, I write until my muse is satisfied or my mind shuts down which ever comes first. I can tell you that my mind shuts down ninety percent of the time. To be honest, this devotion that is displayed by Mr. King is not a bad thing in any way. In fact, it is something we should strive for. Am I saying that we should write for four hours a day everyday of the year? No, I'm saying that we should push ourselves and maintain a schedule that we can work with and be productive. How will you know when you have found the sweet spot? Your passion will tell you.

I do have one thought, does Mr. King count edits and revisions as part of his four hours? I would because that is a critical time in the life of a book and it takes focus to get through the edits in a way that maintains structure and flow. I have not had the pleasure of going through revisions and edits from a line editor but I will soon; I can only imagine that Mr. King would count that as well. Although, I would venture to say that he has a method down that allows him to write and edit at the same time.

In the end it all boils down to writing. Whether you are a bestselling author or just write for fun it is important that we allow our passion for writing to drive us. We should also be prepared to rise that emotion until we settle in with a routine, schedule, pattern that fits us best. No, that doesn't mean we need to turn writing into a job or a burden. It is a labor of love. When we have it so bad that it is a burden NOT to write then we are where our muse wants us to be.

One hour, two hours, three hours, or all day, it doesn't matter how long we write as long as we do. How bad do you have it?

You can run but you can’t hide.

Young, in college, Spring Break, and heading for a Mexican beach by the Sea of Cortez sounds like the perfect get away for anyone. But when you are struggling against the cold of an Idaho winter this sounds like the perfect definition of Heaven. What could be more perfect? What could go wrong in a tranquil destination, like this, where the sun burns bright and the beer flows freely? If only Rhet Austen had thought about that question before stepping on the blue bus for Mexico. He might have missed what he would coin as ‘My Bad Tequila.’ What exactly is ‘My Bad Tequila’? Well, you need to read the book to truly understand but to sum it up I would say this – if it can go wrong, it will. In this case, for Rhet, it has.

Rhet is ready to party, drink copious amounts of alcohol and have fun. Even better, he is surrounded by beautiful women but one captures his attention – Tina. As Rhet and Tina renew a fire they once thought extinguished, things around them begin to crumple and go haywire. A strange accident, lost friends and family members on the way to the hospital and many other events only lend to the downward spiral that is ‘My Bad Tequila.’ On the day of their departure it is only Rhet and a few college friends on the bus. Where is Tina? What has happened? The answers to those questions are like the salt rim around a margarita glass…they add to Rhet’s Bad Tequila.

From the first word, Rico Austin begins to weave a tale that is, for many, truly difficult to believe. He is forthright with the fact that some of this story is fictional; however, much of it is true. What validates and verifies this story are the pictures that illustrate some of the scenes. With each passing page, it is virtually impossible not to think “what else is going to happen to this guy?” The more you read the more you connect with Rhett and his journey.

The strength of “My Bad Tequila” lies in the honesty of it. The events that unfold start out innocent enough but by the end many individuals/characters are changed forever. Author Rico Austin’s story is a true coming of age moment right at the heart of youth gone wild. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys the unbelievable ups and downs that life has to offer.
I choice this section of the story for Halloween and it is one of the sections I enjoyed writing. So, without further adieu, I give you Born of Blood.

________________________________________

“You’re late.” Drake’s calm, smooth voice cut through the silence.
“I had to make sure no one followed me. You got my cash?”
Drake turned, his lips a straight line on his face, and speared him with a cold, hard stare. Trey stepped back.
“Did you forget my instructions, Trey? They were rather simple, do you not agree?”
“Nope, I did what you wanted. You said to scare her real good, and I did that. You saw how that ho ran to your arms just like you wanted. Right?”
“Yes, but I distinctly remember telling you to scare her without harming one hair on her head.”
Trey shivered from the instant cold that seeped into the alley, even though sweat built under his shirt. He stepped backward another three steps, but Drake matched him step for step. Tray lifted his hands to his chest, palms facing out.
“Hold on, man. I didn’t know she would fight back so hard. I had to defend myself.”
Drake shook his head.
“Defend yourself? How weak you must be. People are so soft in this day and age. They do not have anything to live for, but expect to be handed everything. Like you — all you want is money. You do not understand the value of living. Do you understand, Trey?”
“What the hell are you talking about, man?”

In an instant, Drake’s intense red eyes filled Trey’s vision. He tried to turn away, but was held in place by unseen hands.
“Let us try this again, my dear Trey. I am going to give you a command, and you are going to follow it.”
“And if I don’t?”
“Run, Trey. Run as if your life depended on it. Run now.”

Trey stared at Drake long enough to realize the truth of the situation, and took off down the alley, turned the corner, and ran harder. He refused to stop until he felt safe again, and then collapsed against a dumpster and inhaled. His heartbeat thundered in his chest as he pulled out his cell phone and dialed.
“Come on, pick up the phone,” he begged.
“Hello.”
“Sam, it’s Trey. I’m in trouble, man, and I need your help.”
“Man, I told you I wasn’t bailing you out of jail again.”
“No, you don’t understand; I’m not in jail. It’s that creepy dude I told you about. He is…”
Keep running, Trey, he heard whispered in his ear.
He turned from side to side, but saw no one.
“Sam, I think I’m going crazy. That chick ain’t worth all this. I need your help.”
“All right. Where are you? I’ll come get you.”
I said, Run, Trey, the whisper repeated.
Trey jumped off the dumpster and searched the deserted alley, dropped his phone, and ran toward the street.

* * * *
“Trey, Trey…where are you? Are you there? Can you hear me?”
“I am sorry, but Trey will no longer be available.”
“Who is this?” Sam shouted.
“A friend.”
A loud clatter sounded in Sam’s ear. He looked at his phone, closed it, and stared out the window.
Should I call the police? What will I tell them? I don’t know who that was or where Trey is. Maybe he’s just playing more games with me.
Sam locked up his apartment and went to bed.

* * * *
The street light’s glow was a welcome sight as Trey pushed himself to make it clear of the alley’s darkness. Halfway to safety, he was knocked hard against the wall. His back cracked, and tears built in his eyes. Through the haze of his blurred vision, Trey saw a pitch-black shadow separate from the shadows of the wall. A cold hand snapped out of the blackness, wrapped around his throat, and choked off the air to his lungs.
“I told you to run, Trey. People just do not know the worth of life.”
With a quick twist, a grotesque sound echoed off the walls as Trey’s neck snapped. Drake materialized from the shadows, bit deep into his neck, and drank.

Wrap your brain around this thriller.

Peter Branstead, the intelligent neurology doctor at Saint Mark’s hospital, has stumbled into a medical mystery never before seen in the medical profession. Vagrants from the local area have flooded into the emergency room of Saint Mark’s. All of them with the same symptoms and all of them end with the same result – death. But what is causing these symptoms and why can’t the doctors save these patients?

As Peter investigate this mystery he discovers that everything is not as it seems. In fact it goes well beyond the simple virus or outbreak. Each patient did not simply die, they were murdered. Why? Little does Peter know but the closer he gets to the answer the closer he gets to extreme danger. There are people in the world who would do anything for power and Peter is about to meet them. “Brain Warp” is a medical mystery that travels across the globe and back again.

The deeper Peter digs the higher the stakes get. The individuals behind this horrible plan know of Peter, his fiancé and their investigation. To stop their snooping they have called upon the Scorpion, the most ruthless individual known to the Ukrainian underworld. The mafia themselves fear this individual. What they don’t know is Peter has friends…but is it enough to stop these people and avoid the Scorpion?

From the first word, Gil Snider delivers a fast pace, mystery thriller that will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last. With each passing page, it is virtually impossible not to encourage Peter to keep digging but be careful and solve this crime. The more you read the more you feel the tension building as all the characters you care about find themselves in peril.

The strength of “Brain Warp” lies in the story structure, crisp plot and believability. With medical terminology to support the plot it lends to the credibility of the story which adds depth in a real world scenario. The characters capture your attention quickly and never let go until the end. Author Gil Snider’s novel is a true medical mystery and thriller in every sense of the word. Think House but in the form of a book. I highly recommend “Brain Warp” for anyone who enjoys edge of your seat suspense, intrigue, crime and mystery.
As the holiday season approaches and we begin to think of family and friends with hopes of sharing love, joy, and cheer it can often be said that we reflect on those lost throughout the years. Many are lost by multiple ways but it is difficult, in this day and age, to find a person or family who has not been impacted by the devastating impact of cancer. Cancer has claimed many but there is hope.

The authors, editors, cover artist, and publisher have their own stories and memories of cancer. It truly is a disease that strikes each individual in an unique way. Many have stood up to battle this savage and with each warrior we inch closer to a cure. We, at MuseItUp Publishing, have joined this fight in the best way we know how. I would like to introduce you to Lavender Dreams. What is Lavender Dreams?

MuseItUp Authors dedicate this book to all who have been affected in one way or the other by cancer. All royalties from the sales of this book will be donated each year to a cancer research organization, or hospice in order to further combat and find a cure.

The book is divided into three sections: non-fiction, fiction based on true stories, and fictional stories—ten stories generously donated by the authors to help raise funds for cancer.

This book is dedicated to the memory of one of our dear editors who passed away in 2011 from cancer, Karen McGrath. You will always be remembered.
It may not seem like much but this book can do amazing things with the help of readers who have seen the anguish brought about by cancer. If you wish to learn more about this wonderful book here is the link to its purchase page in the MuseItUp book store. If you are curious, the price for Lavender Dreams is $1.99.

Before I close out I would like to share that my father lost his hard fought battle with cancer a little over three years ago. It is something I will never forget as I miss him on a daily basis. However, for those of you who have battled, fought, and defeated cancer I would like you to know that, in my eyes, you are an inspiration to me and many I know. If you are currently in the middle of your battle then please don't give up, press on, this book is for you and the many who are fighting. There are thousands, if not millions who support you and love you.
I really enjoyed it and would do it again but it is a great deal of work pulling an event of that scale together. Now, I am working on something new that could be a great deal of fun for all of us but I will share more on that later.

What have I been busy with? Well, I've been working very hard on my novel, Born of Blood. I received my first round of edits and that took about a week to complete. That was an interesting experience because she made a great deal of corrections that actually sharpened the prose while maintaining the story and plot. She also included comments and suggestions that really made me think which also improved the story. I sent that back and she promptly sent me the second round which included a few compliments! Yes, some editors give compliments. That was a great feeling. The second round of edits was very minor with only a few changes. I sent the manuscript back earlier this week. I received an email today, from my editor, which said she agreed with all my changes and passed it on to the line editor. I have no idea what to expect from the line editor but I will let you know as soon as I find out something.

So far the editing process has been enjoyable. I can't say it will always be like that but I might get lucky. I'm in a holding period now while I wait for the line editor so I'm working on my sequel again. The best thing is that I can bring over the lessons learned from my editor to improve the sequel.

I'm hoping my cover will be ready by the end of December. Also, I have two surprises coming out at the end of this month that I hope you will all enjoy. Stay tuned for that.

You can run but you can’t hide.

Grey O’Donnell, a bounty hunter with a shady past is on the trail of the elusive outlaw Blackjack Bud Hudson. Grey, with his partners Billy and Mahko, is hot on Blackjack’s trail. With a plan in place they wait for the daily train to rumble past with its mail cargo and money transfer for the bank in Retribution. As the train travels by they make their move. Only Grey and Billy make it on board as Mahko guards the horses. But more than Blackjack is on this train and things are about to get complicated for Grey.

The sheriff of Retribution, Jasper Roberts, is as mean as a snake and as crooked as a politician. He is also on the train with a gun pointed at Grey. A long history exists between Jasper and Grey and he plans to make Grey pay for that past. Grey and Billy, with Mahko’s help, make a crafty escape from the train. They run for the nearest town out of Jasper’s jurisdiction – the town of Sandwater. Grey soon discovers that not all the residents in Sandwater are what they seem to be. It is when Grey hears that Jasper has his mother in jail that he truly learns how deep the connections between Sandwater and Retribution are. Grey must now return to Retribution and rescue his mother. Who will rescue him?

From the first word, Icy Sedgwick delivers a fast pace, action packed story of outlaws, bounty hunters and the Wild West. With each passing page, it is virtually impossible not to join Grey’s posse of bounty hunters as they run down Blackjack. The more you read the more you connect with Grey as his situation grows intense and dire.

The strength of “The Guns of Retribution” lies in the story structure, crisp plot and fast action; the characters capture your attention quickly and never let go until the end. Author Icy Sedgwick’s novella is a true western in every sense of the word. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys action and intrigue during a time when travel was on horseback and a gun was on every hip.

It wasn’t that she was averse to the chick-lit genre, she said, but HarperCollins was misrepresenting her work.

Readers and writers everywhere were caught up in a whirlwind of shock and awe. Some thought Courtney was a genius for finally saying what they’d wanted to say for years – “Chick-lit is a derogatory, insulting term given to fiction that caters to women! Chick-lit should die! People who read chick-lit should die! Authors who write chick-lit should die painfully, be resurrected, and then die again!” You get the idea.

But there were others who said, “Hey, what’s wrong with chick-lit? I write it! My best friend writes it! My PhD-toting, Harvard graduated sister-in-law’s brother’s girlfriend writes it! I’m offended!”

And then there was me, and, I’m sure, millions of others like me. I have no problem saying I love chick-lit. I have no problems calling it that. And I even – gasp – write it sometimes. But then again, what exactly is chick-lit? Is it ALL women’s fiction that isn’t tear-jerking or coma-inducing? Does it cause diabetes of the brain?

More importantly, who cares?

I detest labels. They cause people to go up in arms, get defensive, go crazy. Who needs it? I know what I like; fiction that delivers what I want, what all readers want – a damn good story. So to new authors who might be shaking in their boots because they write in the dreaded “chick-lit” genre, I say, to hell with what they call your writing.

Write what you want to write. Write the story that makes you laugh and cry and feel like God. Write what you want your readers to read. Write to make people feel better about themselves, to create silliness in someone’s day, to make that scientist in the corner of the bistro snort with laughter.

Forget the labels. Just write.

I’m a writer, and a genre-hopping one at that. I’ve written a little of everything – horror, speculative fiction, mainstream, romance – and sometimes have found people who actually think my work is worth publishing. Not sure if they made the decision during happy hour.

Right now, I have a contract with Muse It Up Publishing for my novella, Her Heart’s Desire. It’s a contemporary romance with paranormal elements, and was my first foray into the novella genre. I am now in love with writing novella-length works, and hope to do many more (and have, in fact, finished a second, which is in the revision stage… in other words, the stage that makes authors want to jump off tall buildings).
Unfortunately this newly discovered knowledge does not deliver an income. Her friend provides a job for her but cautions that her new employer, John Pierre, is eccentric and shrouded in mystery. With no idea what she is getting into Elizabeth takes the job and travels north.

Will Elizabeth harness the true potential of her heritage? Will she unravel the mystery around John Pierre? Will her life dreams come true?

“Witches and Wolves and The Witches Exile Road”” is the culmination of author Anna Patterson’s imagination and love for storytelling. It is in this vein of old time storytelling that anchors her story to the realm of fantasy. Patterson develops character situations that are easy to connect with. The dark undercurrents of this budding romance novel captures your desire to encourage love to conquer the darkness.

“Witches and Wolves and The Witches Exile Road”” is the latest novel published by author Anna Patterson. This story of two creatures, shrouded in reputations of fear, coming together is the stuff of uncommon romance as opposites attract. I recommend this book to those with a taste for romance with dark undertones and a love for the things that stalk the night.
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.”
- Psalm 32

Instruction comes in two forms. One is to prepare us for a task and the other is to show us a direction. It is a remarkable thing to gain instruction in the ways of uplifting faith and positive attitude. “Inspirations from God” is, in a word, remarkable; it delivers heartfelt inspiration in the form of daily devotionals, letters and prayers that deliver a strong message of hope and deliverance. What sets this book apart from the others in this genre is the coupling of thoughts and stories with supporting scripture. It is awe inspiring to see faith and true love written by individuals and supported by scripture.

Louise Manigault delivers this motivational devotional with an elegant hand. The joy and positive support contained on the pages of “Inspirations from God” is greatly complimented by Louise’s care, passion and humble personality. Louise shares the thoughts, stories, scriptures and notes that impacted not only her life but those in her church and community. It is an endearing quality that makes this book unique when compared to other inspirational and motivational books.

I applaud Louise for the devotion and love she shares with all of us with the writing of this book. It is a shining example of her character and faith. I feel comfortable in saying that “Inspirations from God” is among one of the best of its genre. I consider it a pleasure to have read this book.

“Inspirations from God” is a wonderfully passionate daily devotional that will not only uplift the reader but motivate them to be better and look to the Lord for strength and direction. The pages in this book are inspired by love and mercy; written by hands through faith. I recommend this book for the down trodden, exhausted, or stressed; those who need peace and strength in their daily life.
It’s not unusual for you to sink into a recliner, in the most secluded corner of your house, and read for hours. And interspersed between trilogies set in distant worlds, you come back to this one, drawn to the mysterious, dark realm of supernatural thrillers and horror. Exotic settings must jump off the page and come alive in your mind, especially stories of survival; life on the fine edge of existence. You cheer for the reluctant hero, the common man thrust into obligation and you also cheer for the villain, the arch nemesis.

Episodes of “Ancient Aliens” clog your DVR while you anxiously await the return of “Cities of the Underground” on History. You can recite verses from “The Raven” but get more excited when someone wants to talk about “The Rats in the Walls.” Heavy music fills your iPod. Those shiny discs that the kids no longer recognize lay scattered on the passenger side of your truck. You are a fan of Black Sabbath and Aerosmith, not “reality show” Ozzy or “American Idol” Steven. You prefer “Master of Puppets” over “The Black Album,” and like Cliff more than Jason or Robert. The rumble of a Harley Fatboy makes you smile and you know Detroit will never produce anything cooler than a 1977 Corvette. When you have the choice, you opt for Guinness over Budweiser and Starbucks over Dunkin Donuts. You can’t hang a picture without a power tool. You can’t purchase a power tool without hanging it in your garage.

Louis C.K. makes you laugh while the memory of George Carlin makes you cry. You love vampires and hate Twilight. You know the difference between a hip check and a cross-check and despise golf unless it includes a home video of a Tiger mistress. You prefer Suicide Girls over Playboy Playmates, long hair over short hair, curves over rails. Ten years later, you don’t necessarily believe the full-on conspiracy theory surrounding 911, but you also know an F-15E Strike Eagle could have prevented anything from hitting the Pentagon.

Too immature for Johnny Walker Red, too mature for a case of Busch. You’ve been around long enough to get tired of mainstream entertainment and yet you’re still excited by a new author, band, or movie.

This is you, my ideal reader. Let’s hang out sometime. I want to be your ideal author.
Author Bryan Thomas Schmidt and Davi, his main character, have stopped by to share with us a little about Bryan's upcoming book The Worker Prince. Take it away Bryan and Davi:

1. This one is for Davi. Did you see the book trailer for The Worker Prince? What did you think?

Davi: Well, they had several drawings of me with long hair and another with short hair. But in one I was blonde, the other I was brown, and frankly, I imagine it confused people. Neither of them looked much like me. But it was exciting for what it was. I mean they made my life sound like it was quite an adventure when, really, most days are pretty routine. It’s kinda hard to see yourself presented as some intergalactic hero or something. I’m just a guy doing what I have to to survive and take care of my loved ones, you know? At least Bryan described me right in the book, though, I do appreciate that.

2. Davi, do you feel like Bryan did a good job capturing who you are in the book? Bryan, how much trouble did Davi give you while writing?

Davi: Again, he makes me into this hero. I don’t feel like a hero. My wife still accuses me of having a fighter jock ego and make sure to humble me daily. People don’t walk around acting like I’m a hero. I still get lots of stress and frustration, no special treatment. But the events he described did happen, and I did experience the feelings and issues he describes. Some of the conversations were pretty close to how I remember them, too. So, I don’t know, I’m not a writer. I just let him do his thing.

Bryan: Davi was a joy to work with compared to his uncle Xalivar, let me tell you.

Davi: (laughs) He gave me a bit of trouble too, you know? He’s good about that.

Bryan: Well, yes, the book captured that pretty well I think.

Davi: I’m sure Xalivar disagrees.

Bryan: Maybe that’s why he no longer takes my calls.

3. What does The Worker Prince mean to both of you?

Bryan: Well, it’s my first novel and frankly, that’s a huge honor and accomplishment, seeing it published. So it means a great deal to me. That and the fact that I first heard Davi’s story 25 years before I sat down to right it, so I’ve carried my passion for it with me for a very long time. I’m pleased with the reactions from readers and critics, too. People seem to enjoy it. What more could I ask?

Davi: Well, it’s kinda my life story, you know? And they’re marketing it as fiction, so that’s a bit odd. But it’s written well and I definitely like the cover art. Makes me sound good. Who can complain about that?

4. Will there be a sequel? Is there more to Davi's story?

Davi: I’m still alive. Sure. You can do a whole book about what I had for lunch. Lots of meals to cover. Whew! Readers are already lining up.

Bryan: (laughs) The Worker Prince is book 1 of a trilogy, so yes, there’s more to tell. The second book, The Returning, should be out in Summer 2012 and the third book, The Exodus, sometimes in 2013.

5. This is for both of you. What is your favorite part of The Worker Prince?

Davi: The part where I meet Tela is pretty cool. And pretty significant. I also like reading about the heroic things my parents did for me. They’re the real heroes, you know? Miri, Lura, Sol—amazing people. I’m so lucky to know them.

Bryan: Well, I really enjoyed the action sequences, especially the scene where Davi, Yao and Farien are introduced, which opens Chapter 1, as well as the scenes with Davi and Tela. But the action stuff in general was really a lot of fun. People tell me I captured the feel of Star Wars: A New Hope, and that’s something I’m proud of because I loved that movie and that was a goal when I set out to write this. So it feels like a huge success to have them respond like that.

6. Your cover is reminiscent of many Sci/Fi novels. What inspired you to go with this type of cover?

Bryan: Well the artist came up with the cover, not me. I could barely draw a stick figure and no one would pay me for it. What I asked for was something that represented the book well, capturing the feel of the action and adventure and fun. I think Mitch Bentley did a great job, and he insisted on reading the whole book first, which not all cover artists do.

Davi: Chicks dig it. How can I complain? My wife laughs at it though.

7. Where can we find more information about Bryan the author and The Worker Prince?

Davi: That’s a Bryan question.

Bryan: Well, my website www.bryanthomasschmidt.net is the place to start. I also do a column for www.graspingforthewind.com every Thursday where I interview successful people from the Science Fiction and Fantasy publishing business. That comes from live interviews I do every Wednesday on Twitter’s Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer’s Chat. You can find more about that at www.bryanthomasschmidt.net/sffwrtcht. My Twitter handle is @BryanThomasS. I also have a Facebook author page and info can be found at my publisher’s site www.diminishedmediagroup.com as well. The book has a page on my website specifically devoted to it and there are a number of free excerpts available at: http://bryanthomasschmidt.net/tag/excerpt/ too.

8. The floor is yours. Would you both like to share a few closing words?

Davi: Well, don’t overplay the hero thing, ok? I think we all have the capacity to be heroes under the right circumstances, and while writers like Bryan can glorify it and make it seem epic, you can be a hero every day in little things—how you love your wife and kids, how you treat employees and other people. Being a good person in and of itself is almost being a hero given the way things are in this world. Be the kind of person you want to meet, Miri always said. And it’s true. I try to do that. Nothing epic about it, just living life to create the life you want.

Book blurb:
What if everything you thought you knew about yourself and the world turned out to be wrong?
For Davi Rhii, Prince of the Boralian people, that nightmare has become a reality. Freshly graduated from the prestigious Borali Military Academy, now he’s discovered he was secretly adopted and born a worker. Ancient enemies of the Boralians, enslaved now for generations, the workers of Vertullis live lives harder than Davi had ever imagined. To make matters worse, Davi’s discovered that the High Lord Councillor of the Alliance, his uncle Xalivar, is responsible for years of abuse and suppression against the workers Davi now knows as his own people.

His quest to rediscover himself brings him into conflict with Xalivar and his friends and family, calling into question his cultural values and assumptions, and putting in jeopardy all he’s worked for his whole life. Davi’s never felt more confused and alone. Will he stand and watch the workers face continued mistreatment or turn his back on his loved ones and fight for what’s right? Whatever he decides is sure to change his life forever.
