Along with the March to Savings Mega Event, Kroger is featuring an online March to Savings game where you can win FREE participating Mega Event items. Be sure to check it out; after you play, look through the e-coupons available at Kroger.com and add any of the high value ones that you might use. Remember, e-coupons do NOT double and you can NOT stack a manufacturer coupon with an e-coupon. It's in your best interest to search for e-coupons valued at $1.00 or more.

Apologies for the blurry picture; my Monday started off with all of us oversleeping and the day only got crazier. ;-) All of the items on the left are Mega Event items; from the bread and cheese over to the right were the other items I purchased. Noteworthy deal: the Kraft Cheese catalina has returned and is in effect until 3/18/12 - buy 5 participating Kraft Cheese items, get a $4.00 off your next order catalina. I also hopped into Aldi on Monday for a ton of produce, dairy, and pantry/baking items. I spent $45.09 there; my weekly budget of $100 was a-screaming at my $24 overage. No worries; my freezer is now full of meat for the rest of the month and my simple stockpile is re-stocked. I foresee some low spending weeks ahead.

Menu Plan Monday | Kid Friendly Dinners & St. Patrick's Day Irish Feast

I haven't published a menu plan in a while here at TNFM. While I still menu plan by month, I'm fairly flexible in how and when I cook the meals I've planned for the different weeks. Sometimes it's because a great sale on a key item (say, chicken) pops up or sometimes our family schedule gets overly hectic.

I thought it would be useful for me to publish my monthly menu plan for the remainder of March in weekly increments. This week, I've got a number of simple, kid-friendly dinners planned for my bunch. Here's what's on the menu:

CLIP | Sunday Coupon Preview, March 11, 2012 {1 SS, 1 RP}

It's that time of the week - time to look ahead at the anticipated Sunday insert coupons so you can start planning for next week's store deals.

Get Organized | FREE Printable Grocery List Planners (LINK YOURS!)

If you're in charge of the grocery getting at your household, you know just how important it is to have a good list of what you need in your hand before you even step foot into your grocery store.

Without an accurate list (preferably a list based on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly menu plan), you will waste time and money at the grocery store and will likely find yourself heading back again for just *a few* extra items you forgot the first time....plus a few *extra* items that you just couldn't resist. And oh boy, the marketing geniuses (and they are quite genius, ya know) in the supermarket business are hope-hope-hoping you do just that!

Outsmart them all by printing and using one of the grocery lists I've linked below. Post the list in a visible place in your kitchen where you can check off or highlight items as you need them for your next grocery trip. Many of these lists can be saved and edited on your computer as well meaning you can customize the list to reflect the items you buy week in and week out.

5. Free Pre-Formatted Grocery Lists at Grocery Lists.org. This site is pretty cool - the founders created this site based on sharing *found* grocery lists in stores. You can see images of the found lists here. Odd but interesting! The pre-formatted lists they offer come in two versions: full list and vegetarian option. Both are downloadable and can be customized. Let's Go Krogering! | Week of March 5, 2012 {Cart Buster Sale Continues}

Oh boy - it's been a month (February 6!) since I posted a LGK! post here at TNFM. Here's a quick run-down of what all's been going on at mi casa:

:: We adopted a second dog, a 4 year old GSPointer, from our local Humane Society. I happened to be on my way to Kroger about a month ago and saw the volunteers walking him. We are now a two dog family once again (or, as I like to say, card-carrying members of the Insane Canine Posse), something that isn't terribly frugal but is worth it. ;-)

:: I loaded about a gazillion cases of Girl Scout cookies in my van and got them distributed to my troop. I managed to eat about two boxes of Thin Mints all.by.myself (mmmm!) before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent.

:: I revamped the blog/site here a bit to make it more organized. Ahhhh....I feel better. You can read a bit more about it here.

:: I finished reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. I chatted a bit about my thoughts on the book in this post at my personal blog. After reading about her family's year-long quest to eat only food they grew/produced on their farm or purchased from local sources, I fell into a guilty funk over my children's love affair with Cheez Its (among other not-so-whole foods; Totino Pizza Rolls, anyone?!). This mini-guilt fest resulted in me making homemade Cheez Its for them which resulted in them politely trying a few and saying, "Ehhh, they're ok, Mom." Which resulted in me and my hubs Knute and I eating them all. They were tasty, but totally not worth the time and effort. ;-)

:: To appease my mama guilt over our not-so-whole-food lifestyle, I bought a 32 week share in a local CSA. Oh.yes.I.did. I'm hoping the novelty of getting veggies from the local farm will thrill my kiddos and inspire me to new and greater heights of culinary creation. Why yes, I am an eternal optimist. ;-)

So...I've been a bit busier than usual, and haven't done too much Krogering other than the basics; this week was not much different. I really don't care for the Cart Buster Sale weeks at Kroger because if you (like me) are a little OCD on noting shelf tag pricing variance week to week at Kroger, you'll see that the Cart Buster Sale deals aren't really fantastic enough to warrant doing the happy coupon dance.

There were a few deals worth buying at Kroger, though, most notably the Charmin and Bounty deals. I also lucked into finding some pickling spice marked down 90% on clearance; since one thing I am successful at growing in my little garden is cucumbers, I grabbed a bunch for this summer's coming harvest.

I also hopped into Aldi on Sunday for milk, bread, lettuce and Tyson boneless skinless chicken breasts for $1.69/lb (total for trip: $9.77). I shopped Aldi again on Monday for the majority of what we needed for the week (total for trip: $41.11):

My hope, fellow-Kroger lovers, is that starting on this coming Monday (3/12/12), we'll see the March to Madness Mega Sale return. If it's time for some lessons in bracketology, it's time for a big basketball themed Mega Sale! Be sure to check the blogs this weekend for updates.

How To Navigate TNFM Site and Blog

Thanks for bearing with me as I've changed the look and navigation of TNFM.

Rest assured, TNFM is still operating as a blog run on Blogger (because it's FREE and I am frugal!) and you will still receive new posts in your RSS reader or by email if you are a subscriber. My test post last night landed right in my own Google Reader; if you have any issues receiving new posts, please let me know by email.

Now...onto the changes!

If you visit TNFM directly at the web address (www.TheNewFrugalMom.com), instead of seeing a traditional blog with the latest post at the top, you'll now see a more traditional home page look. I wanted to create more of a "front door" look to the site with quick links to highly trafficked topics as well as a link directly to TNFM Blog.

When you click TNFM Blog, you'll return to the more traditional blog posting look with the same navigation bar, sidebar, and footer that is on the front page. You'll simply be able to scroll through new posts by date.

Why did I make these changes?

I wanted to create a more organized site not just for myself (because - let's face it - I am a bit of an organizational neat freak, lol!) but for new visitors and for you, my faithful readers. Because time is the most valuable resource we have, I want my site to be easily navigable and useful to anyone who is searching for information and resources on couponing, frugal living, menu planning, Kroger, and other topics I cover so you don't waste your time.

Below is a quick overview on subscribing to updates from TNFM and navigating TNFM. I'll be linking this post in the header and footer of the site under the link "SITE MAP" in case you need to refer to it again in the future.

Test Post | Format Changes at TNFM as of March 4, 2012

Hello all!

This is a quick test post to insure that my RSS feed is still publishing via Feedburner to your reader of choice.

I've been working over the past few weeks to change TNFM into a more static website for easier navigation with a blog function so I can still post on the blog and you can still read new posts in your reader.

Now that I've made the official changeover, I'm test posting to see if the RSS picks up in my own Google Reader.

Thanks for bearing with me! I promise a more detailed post on Monday, March 5, detailing the changes I've made to TNFM and why I made them.

COOK! | DIY Homemade Crock Pot Yogurt: Round Two {Better, But Not 100%}

For 2012, I have a number of DIY Homemade recipes for grocery items that I plan to make in my kitchen.

Not only can you save money making pricier items at home, you can also control the ingredients and the quality of the ingredients, a must for many folks on special diets.

My January DIY Homemade Recipe Project was Crock Pot Yogurt.
If you missed my earlier post about trying my hand at DIY Homemade Crock Pot Yogurt, you can read it (and have a few laughs at my utter FAIL, lol!) right here.

Well, my friends, I've never been one to let one failure keep me from trying again so about a week or so ago, I pulled out my Crock Pot and started up a second batch of homemade yogurt:

You'll notice that I've got some powdered milk on the side there. After reading through the comments at the recipe post, I decided to try using powdered milk (2 TBSP added the 4 oz starter) mixed in with the yogurt starter as a means of creating a thicker, more custard-like yogurt.

And here's the cool part....IT WORKED!

{Imagine a very cool picture of thick, custardy, pile-on-your-spoon yogurt in 3...2...1...!}

Alas, I have no finished product picture; the morning the yogurt was finished (I let it sit in the towel-wrapped Crock Pot overnight) was a very busy Saturday morning here with a couple of extra kids underfoot. While the kids played and my husband and I organized our weekend schedule over coffee, I even added the extra step of letting the whey from the yogurt drain off by lining a colander with coffee filters and letting the yogurt sit in there over an empty stockpot. That worked really well; I was surprised at how much whey/liquid there was.

It was what I did to the yogurt after I drained it that makes me really, really, REALLY wish I had snapped a finished product picture because I *kind of* screwed it up.

Again!

Because I like my yogurt plain vanilla with just a bit of sweetness, I mixed in both 1/4 TSP of pure vanilla extract to the finished yogurt PLUS about 3 TBSP of sugar. Then I stashed it in the refrigerator, pleased as punch at my own frugal DIY-ness. Go Mare!

It didn't even cross my mind that by adding MORE sugar (ie: FOOD) to the active yogurt that I might upset the balance and create a perfect scenario for those active cultures to start multiplying again. And again. And...well, you get my drift.

So imagine my surprise when I took out the container late on Saturday to have a little protein snackeroo in the afternoon and found that my delightfully thick yogurt had become runny and thin.

Lesson LEARNED! ;-)

It wasn't a total loss this time, though; although it was thin and runny, it was still tasty. I mixed it into my oatmeal in the mornings and my hubs, stalwart frugalman that he is, just drank it straight up as a snack.

I just filled up my Crock Pot again a few minutes ago; today, I'm trying DIY Homemade Crock Pot Yogurt, Round Three. Here's the takeaways I have from Round Two:

Things I Did Differently that WORKED:

1. Monitor the temperature of the milk. I used a meat thermometer (a candy thermometer would have been even better but I don't have one) to make sure the milk had cooled to around 110 degrees Fahrenheit before adding the yogurt starter. Because every slow cooker/Crock Pot heats a little differently (faster or slower), the time it takes for your whole milk to scald and cool can vary from the guidelines in the recipe. A thermometer makes it easier to pinpoint the ideal time to add the starter yogurt.

2. Add powdered milk to the starter. Again, I read this in the comments of the recipe post.

3. Drain whey from yogurt. All I did was line my colander with coffee filters, scoop the yogurt into it, and put the whole thing over a stock pot. There was a lot of whey that drained off and I simply poured that over my dog's food. He was delighted at the treat. ;-)

Things I Did Differently that DID NOT WORK:

1. Add sugar (!) to the finished yogurt. Yeah, I won't be doing that again. All I did was feed those cultures. This time, I will simply leave the drained, unsweetened, unflavored yogurt as is in my refrigerator until I plan to eat it - then I'll add whatever flavoring/sweetening to it.

I'm hoping the third time is a charm! This time, I'll be sure to take pictures for the extra steps (powdered milk and draining) as well as the finished product. I'll share the end result with you next Monday.

My advice: if you see a great deal on ground beef/beef in-store, buy it up and freeze it.

This week, Kroger is running a brand new promotion - one I've not seen in my years of going Krogering with coupons - the Quarter Back promotion. Buy (4) or more participating products and earn $0.25 per product back at checkout via a catalina coupon to use on your next purchase.

The print ad shows only a portion of the participating items; make sure you check through the ad matchups linked below to see the unadvertised items found in-store. There's a nice deal on Old El Paso products that make them free or nearly free after MFR coupon and Quarter Back promotion.
