Today I stopped at my local Walgreens to do the free got2b hair products deal (which totally worked out awesome btw). When I was on my way to the checkout I noticed in their clearance carts that they had lots of containers of Morton Iodized Salt (think table salt) marked down to $0.37! Original price was $1.49. My location may vary from yours, but it's worth a look. Pretty happy about getting four got2b products and the salt all for $0.95. Nice. So a big shout out to the Little Chute Wags!

I have been quite into baking this winter. Sometimes I'm a griller. Sometimes I'm a deep fryer (well, not really, but you know what I mean!). And right now I'm a baker. Bread, brownies, cookies, cakes and so more. I have never been one to go buy fancy flour. And by fancy I mean pricey. You should know by now that I am ~~cheap~~ frugal. I am so excited to share with you my latest money saving substitution.

I have always had it in my head that cake flour is waaay better for making cakes than AP (all purpose) flour. This ensured a better rise and less of a chance of falling. Yadda yadda yadda. I felt like I couldn't make from scratch cakes because I wasn't going to throw down for the more pricey cake flour. In turn I wasn't able to produce spectacular cakes. I was wrong! (Notice the past tense. I don't like being wrong for very long. I am no longer wrong. Wink wink.)

From Your Kitchen Cake Flour

Go get it:

1 cup AP flour minus 2 T
2 T corn starch

Go make it:

Mix flour and corn starch. Sift. Ta da. For realz. This will produce one cup of cake flour. Double, triple or quadruple to your heart's content.

In a pinch you can also use a low protein flour in place of cake flour. For instance self rising flour. That is if you have self rising flour on hand. Cheapo here doesn't usually have self rising flours either. You should just omit the salt and leaveaners. Who knew?!

UPDATE: Bah! Received a cancellation email from Staples. The Milwaukee County Zoo is holding their first Family Free Day of 2012 this Saturday, January 7th. The zoo is free to all visitors. All other fees apply (parking, concessions, etc.). Did you know that the zoo is open 365 days a year?! Very cool. If my family went to the zoo today it would cost us $52 (including parking which is $11).
