From Versailles to the moon. Hailing from the outskirts of Paris, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, otherwise known as Air, established themselves on the international electronic music scene at the end of the 1990s with their unique and refined sounds. Their new album is a tribute to the classic silent science-fiction movie Le Voyage dans la Lune and its legendary director Georges Méliès. Here is music that is truly out of this world.

Air’s first singles were released in 1997 and immediately caught the attention of Depeche Mode for whom they remixed several tracks. The critically acclaimed “Moon Safari” followed in 1998, featuring the single “Sexy Boy”, and met with great success in Europe and the United States. The band’s music has been included in the soundtracks of films such as “The Virgin Suicides” and “Lost in Translation” (Sofia Coppola is a big fan!) and now they are back, with achievements such as “Talkie Walkie” and “Pocket Symphony” under their belts. “Le Voyage dans La Lune” is an original project that puts Méliès’ masterpiece into music. At the beginning of last century the French silent movie inaugurated the season of adventurous cinema and Air’s seventh studio album is born of the film’s soundtrack. From 1902 to today, a fantastical trip to the moon.

It’s no wonder then, that slews of legendary masters from Valentino to Yves Saint Laurent to Christian Louboutin have developed a weak spot for this bright and bash color, which for decades has sparked up the catwalks, the silver screen and red carpets.Who doesn’t remember Julia Roberts’ lacquer red evening number in Pretty Woman, for example?
For spring, the LBD turns red, bringing a bright note to the season’s array of dresses – feminine charm accented by a dose of sexiness for ladies happy to turn heads.

Primarily cut above the knee with simple and clean lines, each fashion house or brand adds its imprimatur to the trend with frilly borders, drapes tumbling down the front, pleated skirts and high waistlines.
If you’re not clamoring to attract attention, then temper the redness with anything from a soft scarf, a simple black cardigan or a cream colored trench.

Bustiers are tight and explode with pleats to frame the bust, while the hem goes to the knees and develops in yards and yards of fabric. Fifties skirts are tight around the waist but wide and soft because they open like tulips in spring.
In every detail there’s the search for bourgeoisie respectability: from American bijoux in big, colorful gems that are a substitute for high jewelry ones, to the textures, with a predilection for polka dots and flowers. Also unforgettable is the bon ton application of bows used even on shoes, which return to have high heels and be slimmer.
Accessories are small and carefully made: a clutch to carry by hand, perhaps with a silk glove, or a handbag that opens like a coin purse.
The woman that is as equally elegant as vain of her own femininity returns. Yes, the Fifties woman knows she is beautiful and she wants to be admired because of it.

The overall mood is rustic countryside meets Riviera chic available via one great standalone piece or a play on patterns and textures that show off confident matching instincts.
Blazers and shirts primarily, but bottoms as well, come in myriad variations on checks and stripes that shed their formal aura thanks to airy pastels or cheerful colors (bubble gum pink and lavender are totally cool) and breezier fabrics.
Sweaters, cardigans and knitted vests gain character with bold rugby or small irregular stripes and infinite renditions of the diamond pattern, awash in bright colors or tonal combinations that are perfect with solid bottoms. Ditto for ties, hats and scarves.

Luckily for men, the notion of casual Friday has evolved into a weeklong one. More than pinstripes, it’s the personality and style that count, even in the boardroom.
Dress down codes are now widely accepted, even in the more conservative business communities, as long as they never bypass good taste and sensible combinations.

The variations on the theme are endless but a certain penchant to mix-and-match is required.
One way to go is to mix formal blazers in rich cottons or lightweight flannels, both solid and patterned, with sportier bottoms such a khaki pants and jeans. Vice versa, slim and elegant pants in traditional men’s fabrics can be worn under a finely spun cashmere sweater or a fitted shirt in exotic sunset hues or ocean blues.
At Prada, Burberry and Bottega Veneta the jacket of choice is slim, with two buttons and featuring peak or notch lapels while Marc Jacobs and Raf Simons opt for soft checks. An overall classical palette of earth tones and cocoa browns are as safe as they are chic.

As always, the shoes are the icing on the look with an ample selection of driving moccasins by Carshoe, Hogan’s urban sneakers, suede Derby and desert boots.
And, if you really want to flex your styling muscle, toss on a great beret or a striped scarf.

Just consider how shapes have left a mark in fashion by typifying eras and decades – constricting bustiers and full crinoline skirts, A-line dresses or egg-like skirts.

This season, designers elevate their tailoring skills to new heights with new and unexpected silhouettes, creating a fresh elegance ruled by geometric and artsy constructions that exalt the figure.
For jackets, it’s a play on squared and bold shoulders that portray the kind of feminine toughness that Viktor & Rolf and Alexander McQueen muster so well, while Vivienne Westwood, Vionnet and Marni go more poetic with voluminous Pogoda sleeves or ultra-structured ones.
McQ, Sophia Kokosalaki, John Galliano: knitwear enriched with asymmetrical fastenings or ruffled statement sleeves. Forget pencil skirts and let loose with tulip or bubble silhouettes, delicate layerings or airy fabrics, a vein that runs through dresses, lightly draped, pleated or constructed with intersecting panels.

Turn your home into the land of a fairy tale with functional design objects, natural materials and basic shapes and shades. Think golden cutlery, cups adorned with butterflies and glasses in all the colors of the rainbow.

Light is warm and evocative, as in the deep undergrowth, filtered by the trees: simple and clean lines, or freshly cut wood, for lamps that illuminate as the torches of a night-time stroll.

Sit on the ground among the trees or on a crate-stool, a wool (picnic) blanket or a cushion soft as moss, and don’t be surprised if a tardy rabbit happens to hop by.
This is the enchanted forest.

Once only considered sturdy work wear, jeans today are a universal closet staple with no boundaries in terms of how, where and when to wear them. A notion further validated by spring’s line-up filled with simple cuts, subtle stitching and discreet details for a refined, less-is-more look.
Baggy, slim, tapered, rolled up or cropped – the more the merrier because you can never have enough pairs of jeans.

Sleek, elegant and why not, sexy; these styles remain a closet staple for 24/7 schedules. Few items are more versatile and comfortable than a pair of chic jeans in washes spanning from sky to ink blue with grays and blacks in between. Dark washes are perfect for office hours, especially under a crisp white or patterned shirt topped by a blazer, while for a relaxing Happy Hour, toss on a striped T-shirt and a sports jacket.

The record that confirmed this group’s talent in the eyes of the world was actually recorded in frontman Jonathan’s kitchen; presenting Portamento, The Drums’ latest album. Critically acclaimed and with a large fan base, they are one of the most interesting bands on the indie pop scene. The New Yooxer met The Drums in person for a little chat about their music and their style, both decidedly unconventional. (Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)
How to describe their musical style? Perhaps the following formula will explain all: The Smiths+Joy Division+Kraftwerk. A truly British mix for a group of New York boys who have turned 80s pop from across the pond into somewhat of a cult sound and used it as inspiration for their originality. Founded on a childhood friendship, the band’s predecessor featured just Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham in an electro-pop duo called Goat Explosion. The Drums emerged in 2009 and by 2011 had already recorded their sophomore offering, sure to match their first LP in success and acclaim.

INTERVIEW
1. Your last album called “Portamento” symbolizes going from one point to another. What is the starting point and what is the arrival? What do they mean?
Well it basically is a word that reflects where we are now as a band as individuals. A lot has happened in the three years that we have been a band. Some good and some bad and we have transitioned as a result. I don’t know when or where it started exactly and I certainly don’t know when it will end. I think I’m just glad that we actually can grow and evolve – I didn’t think that was possible because we are all so stubborn.
2. What are your musical roots? And where are they from?
Well we started The Drums out of a love of pop music and we had two groups that we really fetishized over – The Shangri-Las and The Wake. They both put out perfect pop but in totally different genres and we took those two sounds and blended them together and came up with something of our own. We feel lucky.
3. Your secret musical dream: playing with…?
I’d love to play with Big In Japan. Not possible now…but you said “dream”…
4. About your style: the perfect outfit is…
I like things nice and classic but at the same time looking like you found it in garbage can. I never press my shirts – I prefer wrinkles and tears, but there is a fine line. Tucked in shirt with a casual or sporty jacket overtop with some rolled up denim jeans. And as taboo as it seems in fashion, I like denim on denim and white cotton socks into nice handmade leather shoes (worn). Last week I got a leather jacket from Vivienne Westwood and the rest of my outfit cost me less than 20 bucks. I like that sort of mix up. High end from head to toe is not a good look. But wearing anything from American Apparel is not a good look either. So mix Westwood jacket with old levis and an ill-fitting t-shirt you found in the garbage.
5. Your best live show…
Bestival 2011. We were very nervous and didn’t think anyone would really care. We had a bad time slot and we were introducing lots of new songs from the new album. Our fears were quickly flushed away as we had a huge crowd (I’d say as big as Bjork – who headlined the same stage that day). It was a sigh of relief and the crowd seemed to love it. Sometimes things don’t click together so it is so nice when they do.
6. A favorite drink…
I like Patron Silver on the rocks.
7. Never without…
My computer. I do all my recording on it and like to have it near me every time I get the urge to write. Ah, technology….!

Sleek and lean silhouettes traced by high waist lines that channel a quiet elegance and retro allure. Tailoring skills and sartorial details at their peak for a smattering of bottoms – jeans, wide-legged trousers, capris, miniskirts and cutaway models – topped with loose or fitted tops and tailored blazers.

A high waist as the common denominator for styles otherwise as diverse as frost from fire – fluid and pleated trousers opposite stove pipe skinny models or skirts in all lengths, either pencil straight or softly gathered, pleated and layered.
Chic black and beige as the main colors, sparked up with jelly bean hues and prints.
These fresh and sexy styles testify how an inched up waistline is anything but old fashioned. Rather, it mirrors a strong personality and the desire to break away from low rise.
So suck in your tummy or plan extra time at the gym.

The blazer has come a long way since the captain of the HMS Blazer frigate commissioned this marine-inspired jacket for a visit to Queen Victoria in the early 1800s.
A notion validated by spring’s array of cool styles spanning preppy to rock to sporty that are sure to add panache to any look.

For sure, a navy blue blazer is a building block for any man’s closet, and a universal symbol of elegance, but spring’s selection highlights fitted silhouettes that trace the body and skinny lapels becoming less formal and more playful.
These jackets, fashioned from an abundance of materials in neutral or bold colors, are as versatile as it gets and look just as good worn over jean or lightweight flannels, Bermuda Shorts or chinos, crisp striped shirts or Pop Art T-shirts.

Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City may have hung up her stilettos a while ago but a great pair of shoes remains an object of desire for most women simply wanting to be on trend or eager to make a statement. Unquestionably, the perfect accessory to jazz up short summer dresses, shorts and Capri pants.

One-of-a-kind shoes rule the spring summer 2012 accessories gamut with a vast selection that poses only one dilemma – what to choose?
So pull out pen and paper and start compiling your wish list. Flat and high heels continue to dominate both ends of the spectrum, interspersed with a more contained selection of kitten heels.
Platforms, jagged rubber soles and artsy heels create sculpted silhouettes while a smattering of lively colors and decorations of all sorts further raise the quality bar.
Pretty sprinklings or applications of pearls, beads, flowers and glittery elements are impossibly charming while tasseled fringes, graphic cutouts, bold hardware and studs speak to a more hard-edged audience. If too many embellishments aren’t your cup of tea, then metallic leathers and animal prints provide an unfussy boon to strappy sandals and ballerinas.
