Wall Street analysts had expected the company to have $265 million in revenue and earnings per share of -$0.04. One area of concern with Zynga that analysts have centers around the number of bookings made in its games. Bookings are in-app purchases made while playing games like FarmVille, Cityville, and others.

This quarter, Zynga saw $230 million in bookings, a decrease of $31 million from the previous quarter. A year ago, the company had $329 million in bookings.

The market’s reaction to Zynga’s performance was definitely not kind — in after-hours, it had plummeted from a close of $3.34 down to $2.90 currently — investors are definitely not pleased.

Here are some recent metrics that Zynga released:

Daily Average Users: 52 million (down from 56 million last quarter)

Monthly Average Users: 253 million (down from 298 million)

Monthly Unique Users: 150 million (down from 167 million)

Even with its performance, company CEO Mark Pincus remains undeterred, saying in a statement:

We are encouraged by the strong execution from our teams and the breakout hit performance of FarmVille 2, which captures the imagination of nearly 40 million players every month. 2013 will continue to be a transition year as we face the challenging environment on the Web and invest in developing the leading franchises and network across Web and mobile platforms and offer our 253 monthly players a connected experience that can follow them from work to school to home and anywhere in between.

One of the things that the company is known to be working on is finding ways to cut down on the amount of money it’s spending. In February, Zynga began consolidating three offices in the US and closed its Baltimore studio location.

A few months ago, Zynga and Facebook divorced and last month, Zynga announced that it moved to make Facebook Connect an optional login protocol. It has also redesigned zynga.com to allow players to create their own accounts outside of Facebook. This move could play a role in Pincus’ master plan to capitalize on the mobile space, while leveraging other authentication protocols like Google+ and Twitter.

However, not all things appear to be gloomy for the social gaming company. Earlier this month, it began to launch its real-money poker and casino games in the UK. Powered by bwin.party, “one of the largest and most reputable real money gaming operators worldwide”, those of legal age in the country will be able to play with ZyngaPlusPoker and ZyngaPlusCasino on the Web and desktop. Both a Facebook and mobile version should be available later this year.

Last quarter, Zynga beat the market’s expectations thanks to the success of FarmVille 2, calling it the “biggest highlight of the quarter.”

Zynga’s stock is closed at $3.34. In after-hours trading, the company is down to $2.99 (5.98 percentage drop)

Add another one to the fray: NASDAQ-listed provider of infrastructure software for enterprises TIBCO today announced that it has acquired Maporama, a privately-held provider of cloud-based location intelligence and geospatial analytics solutions.

Maporama essentially allows companies to shorten decision-making cycles, optimize resource allocation and match supply with demand within the context of location.

The company says it has been in the geolocation business for 12 years, which means they likely bring a lot of expertise and valuable intellectual property to the table.

Lars Bauerle, VP of Product Strategy for TIBCO’s Spotfire service, says:

“By combining Maporama’s digital mapping and geospatial capabilities with Spotfire’s market-leading analytics and data discovery platform, we will increase the value we provide to our customers, enabling them to solve new location-based business problems and make more informed decisions.”

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Today, it announced that it has hit the 4 million user mark — something that it says is four times more than the number it had in 2012. In addition, the company is releasing an update to its mobile apps that it says includes new “relevancy tools” that it claims will help improve the context for social media relating to events.

Last November, the company shared it had just 3 million users, highlighting some fascinating growth in the past three months since then.

In an attempt to help users share events and places anywhere in the world in real-time, Banjo has launched new tools centered around its algorithm. It looks at over 500 million social feeds before organizing and distributing the location information from any post right to a specific event. What that does is generate a global social feed that it says will allow users to better explore and share an entire experience from anywhere around the world.

Damien Patton, Banjo’s CEO, says: “There are so many apps and services trying to show the who’s and what’s around you right now, that exploring ‘here’ is not a problem we’re trying to solve. At Banjo, we’re focused on one thing: building contextual engines that help everyone else understand what’s happening ‘there’.”

With this new version of Banjo, users are now able to share places that they are exploring with their friends, often by pushing a link through Twitter, Facebook, Google+, SMS, or email. And since the service recently was one of the first companies to be selected to participate in Google’s new Google+ Sign In program, now, when the shared link is accessed by friends right from a mobile device, it will prompt users to download the app if they don’t have it already.

Other updates include making photo sharing easier, the release of a photo gallery, inclusion of more places and events, and a redesigned Near You experience.

Banjo says that its updated version is available now for Android and iOS devices.

If you look at the effect e-commerce stores have had on Thanksgiving and on Black Friday, you’ll find that $1 billion went to sites like Amazon and other online retail stores — something that greatly affects traditional brick and mortar businesses. It’s apparent that there’s a need to find a way to merge technology with physical locations in order to ensure that companies are prosperous and modern.

A virtual loyalty card for businesses

Elephanti is the latest service on the market that claims to not only help discover shops, but will let you do smarter shopping. Basically, it’s a mobile application for your iPhone and Android device that’s like a loyalty reward card meeting Foursquare. When a consumer downloads and uses the service, what they will find are stores that are specifically partnered with Elephanti and have guaranteed discounts available to only users of the app — it could be at a minimum of 2% off the purchase.

We spoke with the founder and CEO, Lalin Jinasena about Elephanti and he says that he’s always seen a gap in social media where people mostly connect with friends and professionals, but there are companies also trying to engage with people that aren’t succeeding. Why? “People don’t want to follow all these brands,” Jinasena says.

His background of owning hotels, retail stores, cafes and restaurants around the world is said to have given him some perspective on how to build a service where consumers can go to find out about brands, places, and businesses that they like while also allowing both parties to be connected and rewarded.

How it works

Businesses who participate in the service are those who seek to find new ways to bring customers into their brick and mortar stores. Jinasena says that it’s a powerful tool that isn’t about one-time deals that you might see around holidays, but everyday — in fact, it’s supposed to help build relationships so that both the business and the customer get the benefit out of it.

Merchants can sign up for free and will be able to manage their presence through a web dashboard interface to update their profile, add products, post their discounts, etc.

Customers need only download the app onto their mobile device in order to follow their favorite merchants, search for interesting items, create a shopping list, and more. When they use the app, they will be able to look at stores nearby and see what they have. After deciding to enter a location, the customer can now check-in (the Foursquare tie-in). In doing so, not only will friends and followers know where the customer is, but the merchant’s system is notified that you’re there so representatives can provide more personalized service through its access to the purchase history, interests, etc.

Once the check-in has been made, the user can navigate through the store using a floor map that the merchant uploaded into the app — although this is controlled by the business and will most often be rough sketches — definitely not cool in terms of design (some may be pencil sketches, while others will be more elaborate — potential in lacking of consistency?), but functional to help users find where they want to go.

In the end, customers can rank a business through the app by the quality of its service. Reviews can also be left for others to read and the system was created by Elephanti — it doesn’t leverage anything from Yelp, Foursquare, or any other similar service.

The ability to create a list of favorite businesses is also included for customers to exploit. Up to 20 retailers can be added to the list that basically functions like a bookmark so customers can reference it later without needing to “follow” the business.

For retail stores with multiple locations, Elephanti has a platform that will allow it to have one account to manage all stores and can have updates put out depending on city, state, region, etc, all with the click of a button.

Will it make any money?

Jinasena tells us that merchants and customers will not be charged to use the app, but it will rely on advertising to help monetize the product. But it’s not your traditional ad model that will be incorporated — businesses will pay Elephanti to have ads that are targeted to the service’s users based on specific interests listed in their profile, similar to Facebook Advertising. It’s not on a cost per click or impression basis — businesses will find that they’re only charged when the customer actually checks into the store.

The competition

Elephanti’s service isn’t really all that new to the marketplace — there are many others who are looking to help people discover stores and build engagement. It finds itself in a circumstance where it will be contending with services like Yelp, Foursquare, and many other location-based services, many who could step in to rival its offering.

Yes, Elephanti does offer specific and guaranteed discounts, but Foursquare has also been doing that with each check-in and with big retailers and services like Starwood Hotels, American Express, Walgreens, etc. However, with Elephanti, there is less noise for users to deal with though — they’re only going to view participating merchants with deals and product info — it’s not about the check-in. Whatever the differences, it will be interesting to see Elephanti’s growth to becoming relevant to consumers.

Privacy

As you’re giving some personal data to Elephanti, one of the things people might be concerned about is their privacy — especially as it relates to giving merchants access to your information. By checking into a location, customers are giving merchants access to look at who’s in their store, what their shopping history and interests are, and probably much more. Jinasena says that customers can simply turn off the check-in feature, but by doing so, they might miss out on “top service from merchants who know that you’re there”.

Available today

The app is available now for iPhone and Android devices. There are over 1,600 merchants participating from Singapore, San Francisco, New York, and other places in the United States.

This week, it announced that it counted its 3 billionth check-in. Not bad for a service with just over 25 million users worldwide.

Two years ago, the location-based check-in service said it had experienced its biggest growth in history which was marked by more than 380 million check-ins, the Rally to Restore Sanity, and a single check-in from space. Now, 24 months later, the number of check-ins has increased exponentially — the company recorded its 1 billionth check-in September 2011, just 9 months later after its 380 millionth check-in.

Last September, the company stated that it had 2.5 billion check-ins counted. In that three month period, it averaged 167 million check-ins, or around 6.2 million per day. To get this number, TNW found the difference between November and September numbers and divided it by the days since (81) and that resulted in 6.2 million daily check-ins.

In its four-year history, the company has made some key improvements to its platform in order to bring more value to its users. No longer just a check-in service where you tell your friends where you’re at, it has integrated and innovated so that you can take advantage of the venue and places around you. Just recently, Foursquare introduced the Explore feature on its website sharing recommendations and before that, an integration with OpenTable for reservations at your favorite restaurants.

It has also done some remarkable things this year, which most likely helped raise its profile — this summer, it partnered with Starbucks to help (RED) beat AIDS and received over 35,000 check-ins, resulting in a donation of $35,000 to the charity. And it also became perhaps the only location service to claim the title of having the farthest recorded check-in: Mars.

Want to see what Foursquare looked like four years ago? Take a stroll down memory lane and you can see what a prototype of what it was going to look like.

The company has over 100 people on its team between its offices in New York, San Francisco, and London. To date, it raised over $71 million from Union Square Ventures, Jack Dorsey, Kevin Rose, SV Angel, Andreessen Horowitz, Chris Dixon, CrunchFund, Spark Capital, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, and others. It is currently looking into raising $50 million more for its fourth round of funding.

Because they’re not…and you better hold onto your hat, because one of the more well known services has just released an update to its iOS app. Starting today, users of Highlight will get better/enhanced profiles, relevant notifications, high fives, and much more. And there’s just one more thing: it’s now available for Android devices.

Having launched in January and making its grand debut at South by Southwest, Highlight says it’s ready to take the stage in its third act. And while you might think of the service along the same route as Banjo (which recently announced its own news), Glancee, Sonar, EchoEcho, and many others, co-founder Paul Davison tells us public perception about it is all wrong — it’s not about meeting people, but rather about how the world sees you.

Highlight is hoping that people will use the service in a way where they can visualize walking by others and seeing one page of information floating above their head. The idea, Davison says, is to share what you’d want people to see if you had a blank slate. With this update, users will find that there are new ways to share, consume, and interact with the content and people.

Armed with an updated design, new buttons, backgrounds, navigation controls, animations, and what it says is “cleaner overall aesthetics”, the company hopes that people will find it more useful and more engaging than ever before.

The context on Highlight is different than other web services

Compared to other services, Davison says that Highlight isn’t focused on the places, but rather the people. Everything that we ever learn about others is through anecdotes and through context — we find them valuable and interesting for random facts and stories. Keeping this in mind, the company chose to make some adjustments in how the profiles are displayed in the app.

Within the profiles, the header maps have changed so when you’re looking at someone else’s account, you’ll be able to see an animation of your last encounter with them. Additionally, the company says it has expanded the summary area of the screen so that you can now share your hometown, school, and relationship status with others (that is, if you want to).

A new section called “Things about me” has also been added to profiles, which is where you can tell others random things about yourself. Think about it as almost like a Facebook Wall — not only can you post content about yourself, but others can post stories and things about you, something similar to LinkedIn recommendations.

Sharing more information about your interests and what you like is also new to Highlight. Now you can create visual lists of your favorite things while also making recommendations about apps, bands, restaurants, etc.

Davison says that with the previous iteration of the profile, he discovered that there were people who wanted to talk about things they like and therefore the service added in this feature, which imports the Facebook Pages you’ve Liked, while giving you the freedom to add others and tell why you love it.

Because your profile is basically a billboard of information about you, the retail space shouldn’t go to waste by not helping you get something out of it. That’s why the new profile includes a “Let me know if” section that enables users to share requests with people around them and collect responses throughout the day — so if you’re looking for a designer or developer for your company, a babysitter, or anything else, there’s a field for that.

Lastly, all Highlight profiles now can be connected with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Foursquare accounts, importing additional content when needed. However, all information is pulled into the app, not pushed back out.

Acknowledging your common bonds with a high five

Chances are that when you meet someone, you just might have something in common with them — it could be mutual friends, interests, etc. When this happens, common human behavior is to congratulate them on the mutual interest. In Highlight, it’s now called a high five. You might think of it as being similar to Facebook’s poke or Like, but a lot less creepy.

Through the activity feed, you can send a high five to anyone and in seconds, an audible sound should be heard on the other person’s device. Davison says that it’s a friendly greeting with no expectation of a reply, plus it’s more private compared to Liking something.

Highlight did add a bit of an Easter egg into its app so that if you press and hold on the button, a pop-up menu will appear enabling additional “actions” that can be taken, including giving an awkward high five, a “chest bump”, a “fist bump”, or simply a “head nod of acknowledgement”. Davison says that these actions are all populated right from the server side so additional actions could be added in the future.

Enhanced notifications

One of the things that Highlight says it’s trying to do is cut down on the amount of noise that’s generated from notifications. So they’ve rebuilt the system so that it generates fewer, but more relevant notifications, complete with custom ringtones so you can recognize them over your phone, email, SMS, and more.

Davison says that the goal is to ensure that every time you receive a notification, you’re going to be excited about it and you will discover new content from it. It should be something that you would want to take action on.

Through the use of click-through rates, retention rates, and anecdotal evidence, the app will know what notifications to send over — in addition, a complex algorithm and mathematical computation process has been utilized in order to help make, what the company says, the experience better and better.

The activity feed: know all about those around you

While your Highlight profile is perhaps the most important part of the service, the activity feed is your reference of those around you. Davison wanted to put together a system whereby the individual was the center of attention, not their activity. This was something that separated Highlight from Facebook.

With this update, when you look at the new activity feed, you’ll see the same person over and over again, but all you need to do is cycle through their activity while also viewing a bunch of other information about them so you can learn all about them right from a single screen.

The service lets you visually scan your feed to find your friends, but also enables you to message them right from the activity feed — formerly, this was only available by clicking through to their profile.

Adding value to the world

One of the things Davison kept telling us was that he wanted to help find a way to add value to the world — he believes that Highlight is going to be able to do this and that there’s no other service doing it right now.

We asked him about what dissenters and critics say about Highlight — “Who uses it?”, “Is it still around?”, etc. — and he says that the product is different from all the rest. You aren’t publishing things and there’s no friend/follow model that people have come to expect from social apps.

When asked about the hype surrounding location-based services, Davison says he doesn’t like it — for him, SXSW wasn’t about getting the company into the spotlight to promote itself or gain publicity. He thinks that it’s too early for a celebratory touchdown because right now, Highlight is in the early days of this space and he thinks that it’s not one to really take off that quickly.

The company has grown in terms of staff over the past few months. Having only two employees up until July, it recently brought on board several more to help build this new version, along with its Android version, which is available now through the Google Play store.

This location-based service that shares information about the people around you has expanded its reach. Now, its 3 million users can check out places around the world and what’s happening right from the palm of their hands.

You might remember Banjo from earlier this year when South by Southwest (SXSW) took place and everyone was clamoring on about the “location-based wars” and which service, including competitors Highlight, Sonar, and others, would win it out. Well not much has been heard about Banjo since then, but it did pretty well during SXSW, with over 100,000 downloads taking place during the five-day festival, and has been growing quickly with it reaching a million users last April, and now it has surpassed 3 million.

Go anywhere with Banjo

With today’s announcement, Banjo is introducing a new concept of “transporting” you anywhere around the world and helping you discover people, places, and things you care about the most.

No longer are you only going to be able to explore what’s around you — now if you’re in San Francisco and you wanted to see what’s happening in London during the Olympics, Banjo says that it can take you there. You might think of the update almost like Color mixed in with Foursquare rolled all into one.

Damien Patton, founder of Banjo, says that “while the industry traditionally has been focused on what’s happening around us, we found that people were leveraging Banjo’s technology to see what was happening everywhere else.”

Users can now connect more with friends by receiving notifications when they’re nearby, discover common connections by finding out just how your friends know others through social networks, allow you to create personalized places based on where you and your friends are right now, and search based on specific interests.

Discovering common connections

Whether you’re interested in what’s happening around you now or what’s happening around the country or the world, the service now allows you to find out who’s around you and understand what you have in common with them.

If you happen to be looking at the app and see your friends are in Austin in March, you might wonder why. With the update, you can “transport” yourself there and see who else is there. You might come across an investor, entrepreneur, developer, celebrity, or someone else that you’d like to know. Banjo lets you tap on that individual and understand your connection to them.

Think of it like “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” – Banjo pulls in information from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Foursquare, and LinkedIn in order to help you better understand your connections. If you find yourself intrigued by that individual, then you can follow them right from the app and connect on any social network too.

Right now, one thing that is in question is just how many degrees separated will the app show you. Meaning, what happens if John Doe is a friend of a friend of a Facebook or LinkedIn contact? How granular will the connection tree go? As of this point, it will probably simplify things and just show you a two degrees of separation.

Find out where in the world is popular among your friends

Banjo tells us that keeping track of your friends and connections can be a pretty time-consuming thing. To help make it easier, the service has personalized places that show you what the trending places are. If you see New York City, Paris, Tokyo, London, or even San Francisco appearing, it’s a sign that you have at least a couple of connections located there.

Going back to the SXSW example, around March, if you’re in the tech industry, you’re going to see a lot of your friends appearing around Austin, Texas. It will most likely be a trending area and so you can tap on the square in the app and see where everyone is in the city and what they’re doing and sharing across the five social networks the app supports.

Does anyone care?

Sure, this sounds like yet another location-based play without any real value, but Banjo says that no other app in the marketplace today does what it does. Is this going to replace Foursquare and any other location service? Probably not, but it looks like it’s certainly trying to consolidate it into one central app.

And if privacy is a concern of yours, Banjo tells us that the information that it pulls in from the five social networks is limited based on your privacy settings. It doesn’t override any of your preferences.

Banjo in real life

While it won’t go into specifics into its monetization strategy, the company will say that publishers and media houses have used the service before. Jen Peck, Banjo’s Director of Engagement, tells us that during this month’s Presidential election, CNN and FOX News both used it to curate information about what’s happening in Ohio on the ground — it says that it’s much more efficient than sending camera crews all around the state.

The app is available in 10 localized languages with Japanese on its way and is used in over 194 countries around the world.

While the Portland-based company will be a part of ESRI, its founder, Amber Case, tells us that everything, including products, will remain the same. Geoloqi will evolve to become part of ESRI’s Research & Development center.

For Case, this acquisition is not your typical one we all hear about in the tech industry. Rather, it’s more of a strategic technology partnership. The company had been on ESRI’s radar for some time since it began and had even submitted acquisition requests to Case for a while. It was only once the product had been built and that Geoloqi wanted to work on scaling it that an acquisition become serious.

Today, Geoloqi has thousands of developers and an SDK at its disposal that applications can use to harness location to help their users. The potential that it provides is what ESRI’s customers have been chomping at the bit to get for their service. The value of taking the world’s data and bringing it to life is immeasurable and more users are going to see their data working for them and providing greater value than ever before.

According to Geoloqi, this new relationship will combine Geoloqi’s powerful geotool platform for mobile applications along with Esri’s established ArcGIS mapping solutions technology which will create more powerful geolocation and mapping tools for the development of web and mobile applications.

TNW spoke with Case to get her thoughts what lies ahead for the industry over the next few years and she believes that it’s going to be the year of the personal assistant application. For the past 30 years, she’s been reviewing location-based applications and thinks that the world doesn’t need to have an app that uses location to simply get a coupon — they need it to help their family know that they’re safe. In fact, Case wants to find an application that detects the behaviors of people, something she feels would be inherent in its nature.

One concern that she has with the location apps of today are they they aren’t thinking about entire industries, but rather focusing on connecting people to each other. When we spoke, she explained that unless you’re at South by Southwest, you’re not going to want to meet a lot of people in your life. Rather, it’s about smaller, more connected groups that work and apps should focus on that.

When it comes to location, people are willing to give away their location for something much more valuable — she explained that she would love to use a real-time weather application that gives you the precise weather of where you’re at. Why? Because it’s valuable information. She finds Foursquare interesting, since they want to do more with location and says Yelp is her favorite app because she uses it when she wants to find a restaurant.

In the end, the more information you know, combined with location, the more enjoyment you’re going to have in your life. Case’s dream is that location will be used to help people do what computers are doing, and that’s to make decisions for them.

It hit 5.5 million users in February this year.

The company claims more than 1 million journeys are made each day using its free GPS navigation apps for iOS and Android, which are powered by free, crowd-sourced global mapping service OpenStreetMap.

Navmii says users from more than 30 countries continually update its navigation system with more than 20,000 map corrections per month.

Needless to say, this makes Navfree worth checking out especially if you’re reliant on navigation apps on the iPhone 5.

Apple Maps for iOS 6 has already proven not to be the best choice, at least not for now, and it’s always nice to have an alternative for Google’s Maps Web app (and some day, its native app?).

Says Navmii CEO Peter Atalla:

“We are delighted to have hit the 10 million user milestone and are very grateful to all of the users who travel with us every day.

Navfree is currently the number one mobile GPS Satnav app in 10 countries and with the help of our users who constantly update the maps, we aim to continue providing an unbeatable navigation system that’s free and easy to use.”

Navfree is monetized through in-app purchases and advertising.
