Sexton has had extensive experience in leading photography workshops and continues to present engaging and inspiring lectures that move audiences. His lavishly produced books and posters are stunning; you cannot help but be moved viewing the black and white photographs of the natural and human environments that have attributed his success. He has lectured at many Museums and Universities. His work is in numerous permanent collections and exhibitions, and he has been the subject of many articles in the photographic press.

After Peter and Heather had a picturesque trip to Rome, Peter explains his techniques to go beyond  to get that extra special photo.  Of course, Heather would disagree; but Peter did get the shot he wanted.

Peter talks about why any photographer  should be using RAW.  Once in a lifetime trips enhance the need to know what you are doing; as the probability of travelling to the same location anytime soon it not an option. Positive shapes are the shapes of objects in space (such as a bridge or building)

The negative space is the space around the such as a bridge or building ( clouds) .

The balance between positive and negative can made or break your picture, Weak balance made the picture look off but a strong balance made the picture look strong, graphic and well  thought out . Examining your image for positive and negative space can often lead to improving your composition. For example, if all of your positive space is clustered in one area or aligned in a single row, or if large areas of your frame are empty, you might consider reframing the shot. This will allow for more of a balance between positive and negative space.

The use of dark areas against light areas is a common method of adding the feeling of a third dimension to a two-dimensional black-and-white picture. The interaction of light against dark shades in varying degrees helps to set the mood of a composition. A picture consisting of dark or somber shades conveys mystery, intrigue, or sadness. When the tones are mostly light and airy, the picture portrays lightness, joy, or airiness.

From studying the art work of Van Gogh, painting on the left, Peter learned to look for the uncommon pictures that he took on the right above.  If Peter did not study the historical paintings he would have not been inspired in his photography today.  Therefore, this technique (of combining painting and photography which Henri Cartier Bresson  was favous for ) has taken Peter to new levels in improving his photography in different ways of inspiration.

Peter had always been a fan of Wolfe’s, so he was honored that his work stood out enough to garner an invitation by Wolfe to photograph the seminar. However, as Peter says, “Everything that can go wrong, went wrong.”
