Brutality Committed by Gandhi's people Exposed

The picture below is of Felani, a 14 year old girl, who was killed near the border between India and Bangladesh. The Indian Border Security Force claims that they found Felani on their side the border, and therefore, shot her to death - an instance justice rendered to a minor without any due process in Gandhi's land.

Even in Iran, they do not shoot a foreigner caught inside their country without proper visa, let alone shoot and kill as the Indians did to a fourteen year old girl! Is it not barbaric ?

What is more repulsive about Gandhi's country is that after shooting the girl to death, they displayed her dead body by hanging her on the fence for everyone else to see . Is this not even more barbaric ?

After the Gandhi's people render out instant justice to women and children, they carry out the bodies like this.

After shooting Bangladeshis to death by the Indians, the dead bodies are carried like hunted down animals by the Border Security Forces of Gandhi's barbaric India.

This is real India - Gandhi's India. A true barbaric nation which doesn't hesitate to pull the trigger on a 14 year old girl and then display her dead body by pinning her lifeless body on the barbed wire. How can this not be the land of the Barbarians?

The final question is how long will it take India to match the number of murdered Bangladeshis by Pakistan in 1971?

What lies behind the sudden spate of bad press for the Grameen Bank founder?

The start of a very few bad months for Muhammad Yunus, the managing director of Grameen Bank, began in November, with the broadcast of a documentary on Norwegian Television. It was not so much the film's criticism of micro-credit that was worrying for Grameen - microcredit has been under some sustained critical assessment for quite some time. Rather, the film made allegations directed at Yunus personally, as well as claims that the bank misused millions of dollars of donor money.

The programme claimed that 15 years ago, Grameen's Noble Peace Prize-winning founder had 'quietly tapped Grameen Bank' for USD 48 million of aid money. This money, it alleged, had been transferred from Grameen Bank to a separate company, Grameen Kalyan, and some money was said to have been diverted to fund Grameen Telecom, a separate company.

Made for Norwegian TV, the programme might have aroused little international interest had it not been for the English-language online Bangladesh news portal, bdnews24.com. The Dhaka-based agency quickly took up the story, publishing a long report in English, using documents given to it by the Danish filmmaker. Its editors gave the story the headline, 'Yunus "siphoned Tk 7bn aid for poor"'. The following day, the allegation was republished in most of Bangladesh's newspapers, and soon it was an international story, with The Times in London suggesting that Yunus's 'reputation was under threat'.

Fourteen years ago, during the current prime minister's first term in office, Sheikh Hasina was appointed co-chair of the Micro Credit Summit Council of Heads of State and Government, held in Washington, DC. At that time, she had nothing but praise for Mohammed Yunus. 'We in Bangladesh are proud of the outstanding work done by Professor Mohammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank he founded,' she said in her remarks. 'He has demonstrated to the world that the poor have the capacity to productively use even a small credit and change their fate. The success of the Grameen Bank has created optimism about the viability of banks engaged in extending micro-credit to the poor.'

In the aftermath of the bdnews24.com story, however, Prime Minister Hasina's attitude has been starkly different. 'Bangladesh has set many examples,' she told journalists in December. 'Deceiving people by siphoning off their money is another such example. This is nothing but sucking out money from the people after giving them loans.'

Prime Minister Hasina was known to be resentful of Yunus when he received the Nobel Peace Prize, in October 2006 - Hasina is said to believe that the prize was rightfully hers. In her first term of government, between 1996 and 2001, following the signing of a peace treaty in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Hasina had sent emissaries around the world to lobby international statesmen, including Nelson Mandela, to nominate her for the prize. When, five years after she left power, it was Yunus who received the prize, she apparently did not take it well.

Five months later, an event took place for which Hasina evidently never forgave Yunus. In February 2007, a month after a military-backed 'caretaker' government took over power, he announced the formation of a new political party. At that time, the military-backed government was reported to be trying to remove her - along with Khaleda Zia, the leader of the other main political party - from active politics. Yunus said he wanted a 'complete emasculation of the established political parties' in order 'to cleanse the polity of massive corruption'. This did not go down well with Hasina, who reportedly thought Yunus was behind the strategy of removing the two leaders of the established parties from power - even though, after making these comments, he abandoned his idea of becoming active in party politics.

Time for old scores

Less than a week after the film was broadcast, the Norwegian government - whose funds were the ones said to have been stolen and misused - issued a report on the allegations. Erik Solheim, the Norwegian minister of the environment and international development, stated that, according to the report, 'there is no indication that Norwegian funds have been used for unintended purposes, or that Grameen Bank has engaged in corrupt practices or embezzled funds.'

Subsequent inquiries by a local newspaper, New Age, identified that the documentary had failed to recognise that the movement of money from Grameen Bank to Grameen Kalyan was a mere 'paper exercise', and did actually not leave Grameen's account. There was therefore no question that the money has been misused. Further, the money used to buy shares in Grameen Telecom was not donor money, but came from a bank-created fund to support welfare activities of its members and staff.

One might have thought that at least the Norwegian government response would bring an end to the allegations. But not at all. Toufique Khalidi, the chief editor of bdnews24.com, was having none of it. The official report 'neither contradicts the Norwegian TV documentary, nor does it refute anything in our report. It rather corroborates what we have reported,' he said. (Khalidi appears to have been going by the old anti-journalistic adage, 'Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story.') He refused to respond to the New Age article.

More importantly, Prime Minister Hasina appears to have read the situation as an opportunity for the government to make a sustained attack on Yunus. In the weeks after the documentary was broadcast, a slew of allegations against Yunus have been leaked to Bangladeshi newspapers. These included claims that Grameen Bank has created companies unlawfully, was acting outside the law by serving as managing director (as he was past the mandatory retirement age of 60 years), and that the bank was in fact 'an organ of the state'. The bank has denied all illegality, including noting that the law does not apply to age limits for non-commercial banks such as Grameen.

Throughout all this, bdnews24.com has acted as a cheerleader. Intriguingly, the site's executive editor, Khalidi, has another full-time job - as chief editor of Independent Television, a company owned by Prime Minister Hasina's private-sector investment adviser, Beximco's Salman Rahman. Rahman is also rumoured to be on the verge of buying a large amount of shares in the online company.

At any rate, in early January, the site published another high-profile, and highly critical, story on Yunus. This claimed that a two-decade-old contract between Grameen Bank and Yunus's family's printing company gave the 'poor borrowers' a job having nothing to do with its core business.' It further suggested that the family company had gained financially by the arrangement, alleging, for example, that the use of Grameen staff in the printing company was 'to boost dividends for the family business'.

However, beyond the question that it was clearly unwise for Yunus to have entered into any contract with his family, bdnews24.com's two central claims in the story were patently untrue. The printing work undertaken by the Yunus family's company assists the running of the core business of Grameen Bank - its only function is to print material for the bank. In addition, the arrangement has not, in the last 20 years, resulted in any family member receiving dividends or profits.

Whatever the truth of the matter, such coverage has helped to create a climate that has ostensibly legitimised a government decision to establish a wide-ranging enquiry into Grameen Bank, beginning in mid-January. Committee Chair Monwar Uddin Ahmed said that his committee will now look into the 'Overall functioning of Grameen Bank, and suggest how to improve functions of the bank in the future, and in that context look at all legal economic social dimensions of the bank. There is also provision for a special audit of Grameen Bank by the Bangladesh Bank.' Ahmed also noted that the committee would be looking at all Grameen 'sister organisations' and reviewing all recent news 'particularly about the Norwegian programme'.

Yunus has also become subject to legal harassment over three criminal cases. In January 2007, a member of the Jatiya Somajtantrik Dal (JSD), a small left-wing party, filed a criminal defamation case against Yunus for alleging, in an interview, that Bangladeshi politics was simply about 'the power to make money'. The JSD politician alleged that he had been defamed by this remark. For the past three years, the case had sat with a magistrate who had apparently taken no action, presumably because he realised there was no case to answer. But shortly after the new bdnews24.com report appeared, the magistrate issued a summons for Yunus to appear in court.

Some of the legal harassment seems to be clutching at straws. The other was a new case filed by a food inspector accusing Yunus of food adulteration, through a joint venture between four Grameen companies and the French food giant Danone. A food inspector is alleging that yogurt manufactured by the company was adulterated and is prosecuting a number of people, including Yunus as chairman of Grameen Danone. The legal basis for prosecution against a board member for such a matter is dubious.

Banking on 2026?

How this battle between Yunus and Hasina will end is far from certain. Despite commitments that the government inquiry will be objective and fair, it is clear that the intentions of the government towards Yunus are far from neutral. Prime Minister Hasina is reported to have told one visiting foreign dignitary that Yunus would not be allowed to remain as head of Grameen Bank, and that 'he should leave now.' Friends of Yunus are convinced that the prime minister intends to do whatever it takes to destroy his good name, and to remove him from the institution he founded. There seem to be indications that the government wants to take over Grameen Bank, though Grameen has stated that the government only owns 3.4 percent of the institution.

Prime Minister Hasina might be betting that both Yunus and Grameen Bank are vulnerable due to the former's weak links with Bangladesh's civil society. Yunus does not come from Bangladesh's elite, and has never ingratiated himself to it; further, many question whether he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. Yet against this, Yunus remains an international statesman, and has support not only at the highest reaches of the US government, for one, but also among civil-society elites throughout much of the world.

'You have to realise that, on a scale of one to ten, if Yunus is close to ten in the eyes of international statesmen, the prime minister of Bangladesh is about one and a half,' says one former Bangladesh diplomat on condition of anonymity. 'Yunus can get meetings with anyone; the prime minister can't.' This both helps to explain Hasina's continuing resentment of Yunus, but also the difficulty the prime minister faces in her battle with the 'banker to the poor'. It remains unclear whether Hasina is really willing to risk the inevitable international backlash that would occur if her government ends up taking anything that is perceived as spiteful action against Yunus.

Noble Laureate Dr. Yunus

When discussing an issue, is it intellectually honest if certain information is kept hidden, while some selected information is released? Why is it done by certain people? Is it their intention to mislead the uninitiated public into thinking their way ? Is it a desire to fool people and make them adopt their own viewpoints?

I will give a specific example to show you what tactics some people employ to present partial information to the public to advance their cause. You can then decide if the tactic employed is intellectually dishonest or not.

For example, in the recent barrage of attacks unleashed on the brightest son of Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and her government's entire machinery started an ugly and vicious campaign to defame Nobel Peace Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. One of the tactics employed is to publicize selected statements from articles to sway public opinions against the father of microcredit. The hope is that by mounting blatant misinformation campaign by virtue of publishing excerpts from some articles while hiding other facts from the same articles, public sentiment could be driven against the brightest star of Bangladesh who is revered worldwide as the Poor Man's Banker. Here's an example of an excerpt that Hasina's followers chose to publicize :

In 1991, for example, Bangladesh ranked 136th on the UN Development Programme’s Human Development Index (a measure of societal well-being); 15 years later it ranked 137th. And aside from the shortage of data showing benefits, there is evidence that some microcredit programs may actually be harmful, plunging the poor deeper into debt." - Harvard Business Review

Hasina's Brigade is going gaga over the above mentioned lines published in an edition of Harvard Business Review because, to them, it looks pretty damaging to the concept that Dr. Yunus have floated and perfected over the decades. And that is why they have decided to selectively take these lines and flash it to the world making sure that the name "Harvard" is seen by all.

In reality, is it really damaging? Yes, it is damaging but for Hasina's Writing Squad only. It is not damaging to Dr. Yunus. Why not, you ask?

Well, you will be amused to learn that in the same article, authors Steve Beck and Tim Ogden , clearly and unequivocally stated:

"Don’t misunderstand: Microcredit can raise borrowers’ standard of living and help reduce poverty. In the past three years we’ve brokered investments in more than 150 carefully selected microcredit programs and have seen positive effects firsthand, including improved school enrollment, women’s empowerment, better nutrition, and increases in household incomes."

Interesting, isn't it ? Question is why did Hasina's misinformation brigade forget to include these lines? Or was it intentional? I felt quite amused catching them red handed trying to pull a Hasina on their readers?

By the way, "pulling a Hasina" has a multitude of meanings:

Misleading
Lying, cheating
Stabbing on the back
Violating trust

etc.

Hasina has replaced the word Mir Zafor (traitor) in the Bangla vocabulary.

Now that we have exposed these not-so-kosher claims by Hasina's Writing Squad, let us turn our attention to the authors - why did the duo say something negative about microcredit ?

In order to understand that, all we need to know is that Harvard Business Review listed the authors as the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Knowledge Officer respectively of a philanthropic advisory firm!

Hmmm, now it is clear - these two authors want the donations for micro-credit programs to go through them !! They want to play an advisory role to the donors for a fee! Genius !!! Now I understand why on one hand they say how lives have improved due to micro-credit, and then on the other hand they scare the donors so that the advisory firm the authors are in charge of may be retained as adviser ! It is, therefore, crystal clear that these two authors were also trying to pull a Hasina on the donors' eyes! A picture perfect example of conflict of interest.

So far we have clearly pointed out two things:

Dishonest misinformation campaign by publicizing selected quotes but hiding other quotes from the same article,
The true intention of the authors which is to earn money as advisers by stoking fear among donors.

We will now examine the claim the authors made about Bangladesh's Ranking on Human Development Index by the United Nations Development Programme or UNDP. For that let us visit the official website of UNDP. Below is a chart I got from that site. Click the figures to enlarge.

From the chart it appears that Zimbabwe should urgently get into the micro-credit program, while the United States should consider it as well. Good thing is that Dr. Yunus' concept is also been embraced in the United States too. They know what a good thing is when they see one ;-)

Grameen Bank was established in the early eighties. As one can see, the rise of HDI accelerated since 1990.

I have spent a fair amount of time to expose how the not-so-fair tactic is employed with the hope that the next time you see something like this again, you can easily recognize it. When you see it again, and see you will, just walk away with a grin. They will know, "we know, we understand" :-)

Last December, I was waiting at Dubai Airport for my connecting flight to Dhaka. No need to mention that I was tired and was bored waiting there for my flight. My curiosity compelled me to approach the woman. Wearing a smile, I asked her about her cigarette. I guess she read me very well and felt pity for all the confusion that I had on my face and could not hide. With a reassuring smile, she calmed my confusion but not my curiosity. She started to explain why that cigarette was not a cigarette in the traditional sense. She said that it was an electronic cigarette! Being an electrical engineer, my curiosity got even stronger. What is she talking about - electronic cigarette! Man, I have read about diodes and transistors, and what not, but electronic cigarettes!

Unfortunately, the conversation had to come to an abrupt end when I realized that I had to run to catch my plane for the connecting flight. All the excitement of reaching home to friends and family drowned out the surprise that I felt when I saw the woman smoking something that I have never seen before. কিছুদিন আগে ওয়াল স্ট্রিট জার্নালে বাংলাদেশের ওপর খুব চমৎকার একটা রিপোর্ট ছাপা হয়েছিল, সেখানে বাংলাদেশ ও পাকিস্তানের মানুষের মানসিকতার স্বরূপ বোঝানোর জন্য লেখা হয়েছিল, পাকিস্তানের জনগণের কাছে জাতীয় বীর হচ্ছেন দুর্বৃত্ত (ৎogue) নিউক্লিয়ার বিজ্ঞানী আবদুল কাদির খান, যিনি বেআইনিভাবে দেশে-বিদেশে নিউক্লিয়ার অস্ত্র চোরাচালানি করেন আর বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় বীর হচ্ছেন শান্তিতে নোবেল পুরস্কার বিজয়ী প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস, যিনি ক্ষুদ্রঋণ দিয়ে দরিদ্র নারীদের সাহায্য করেন।

সেই প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসকে এ দেশের সরকার খুব ঠান্ডা মাথায় পরিকল্পনা করে হেনস্থা করতে শুরু করেছে। এটি নিশ্চয়ই আওয়ামী লীগের অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি এজেন্ডা ছিল এবং আগে হোক পরে হোক, এটি নিশ্চয়ই শুরু হতো। গত ডিসেম্বর মাসে নরওয়ের একটি টেলিভিশন অনুষ্ঠান এই হেনস্থাকরণ-প্রক্রিয়া শুরু করার চমৎকার একটা সুযোগ করেছিল। নব্বইয়ের দশকে নিষ্পত্তি হয়ে যাওয়া সেই বিষয়টির সূত্র ধরে প্রথমেই আমাদের প্রধানমন্ত্রী প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসকে নিয়ে এমন কঠোর ভাষায় কিছু বক্তব্য দিলেন, যেটি শুনে এই দেশের কাণ্ডজ্ঞানসম্পন্ন প্রত্যেকটি মানুষ হতবাক হয়ে গেল। আমাদের সংস্কৃতিতে আমরা সম্মানী মানুষের, বিশেষ করে বয়োজ্যেষ্ঠ সম্মানী মানুষের সম্মান রক্ষা করে কথা বলি, তাই প্রধানমন্ত্রীর সেই কথাগুলো এ দেশের অনেক মানুষকে অত্যন্ত ব্যথিত করেছিল। আমাদের অর্থমন্ত্রী প্রথমে যৌক্তিকভাবে কিছু কথা বললেন, কিন্তু নিশ্চয়ই তখন তাঁকে রূঢ় ভাষায় কথা বলার জন্য চাপ দেওয়া হলো এবং তখন তিনিও একই ভাষায় কথা বলতে শুরু করলেন। সাধারণভাবে বাঁশের চাইতে কঞ্চি বড় হয়ে থাকে, তাই সবচেয়ে কদর্যভাবে কথা বলতে শুরু করল ছাত্রলীগ। তাদের কথাগুলো লেখার মতো নয়, যত দূর মনে পড়ে, তারা নোবেল পুরস্কার কেড়ে নেওয়ার হুমকিও দিতে থাকে। মৌখিক খিস্তির পর আমরা রাষ্ট্রীয় হেনস্থার স্বরূপটি দেখতে পেলাম। বাংলাদেশের আনাচকানাচে প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসের নামে মামলা হতে লাগল এবং আমরা দেখতে পেলাম, প্রফেসর ইউনূস সারা দেশে ছোটাছুটি করে সেই মামলার জামিন নেওয়ার চেষ্টা করছেন। যে মানুষটি সারা পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে সম্মানী মানুষদের একজন, তাঁকে তাঁর দেশের সরকার এ রকমভাবে অসম্মান করতে পারে, সেটি নিজের চোখে দেখেও বিশ্বাস হতে চায় না। আজকের (বৃহস্পতিবার) খবরের কাগজে দেখেছি, সরকার তাঁকে গ্রামীণ ব্যাংক থেকে অপসারণ করেছে। আমি নিশ্চিত, সরকারের পক্ষ থেকে নানা রকম আইনকানুন দেখানো হবে, কিন্তু পুরো বিষয়টি এমনভাবে ঘটে এসেছে যে, আমি বাজি ধরে বলতে পারি, এ দেশের সাধারণ মানুষ আর সেগুলো বিশ্বাস করবে না। তারা ধরেই নেবে, এটি হচ্ছে প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসকে হেনস্থা করার আরও একটি ধাপ, শত হাইকোর্ট দেখিয়ে সাধারণ মানুষকে তাদের বিশ্বাস থেকে টলানো যাবে না।

এ খবরটি অবিশ্বাস্য দ্রুততায় এবং অবিশ্বাস্য গুরুত্বের সঙ্গে সারা পৃথিবীতে ছড়িয়ে পড়ছে। বেশ কয়েক বছর আগে জেএমবি যখন সারা দেশে একসঙ্গে বোমা ফাটিয়েছিল, তখন দেশের খুব বড় একটা ক্ষতি হয়েছিল, পৃথিবীর অনেকেই ধরে নিয়েছিল, আমাদের দেশটি বুঝি জঙ্গিদের। অনেক দিন পর আবার দেশের খুব বড় একটা ক্ষতি হলো, সারা পৃথিবী ধরে নিল, এ দেশের সরকার হচ্ছে অকৃতজ্ঞ ও প্রতিহিংসাপরায়ণ। যে মানুষটি এ দেশের মর্যাদা সারা পৃথিবীর সামনে উঁচু করেছেন, এ দেশের সরকার তার পুরো রাষ্ট্রযন্ত্র ব্যবহার করছে তাঁকে অসম্মান করার জন্য!

প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসের গ্রামীণ ব্যাংক এবং ক্ষুদ্রঋণ প্রকল্প নিয়ে অনেক আলোচনা-সমালোচনা হয়। এর পক্ষে-বিপক্ষে অনেক মানুষ। আমাদের সবারই ইচ্ছে, এ বিষয় নিয়ে গবেষণা হোক, তথ্য-উপাত্ত দিয়ে যুক্তিপূর্ণ আলোচনা হোক এবং ভেতরের সত্যটুকু বের হোক। কতটুকু আশার ব্যাপার, কতটুকু স্বপ্ন, কতটুকু বাস্তব এবং কতটুকু অবাস্তব, সেই তথ্যগুলো আমাদের সামনে প্রকাশিত হোক, কিন্তু তার মানে কি এই বিষয়ের স্বপ্নদ্রষ্টাকে অসম্মান করা হবে? এবং এত স্থূলভাবে?

সত্তর ও আশির দশকে বাংলাদেশ পৃথিবীর সামনে পরিচিত হতো বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের নামে। এই সরকার বিশ্বাস করুক আর না-ই করুক, এই দশকে পৃথিবীতে বাংলাদেশ পরিচিত হয় প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসকে দিয়ে। কাজেই যখন এ দেশে প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসকে অসম্মান করা হয়, তখন যে বাংলাদেশকেই পৃথিবীর সামনে অসম্মান করা হয়, সেই সহজ কথাটি কি এই সরকারের ভেতর কেউ জানে না?

বিশ্বকাপ ক্রিকেটের জমজমাট আসর বসেছে ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশে, ১৭ই ফেব্রুয়ারী যার বর্ণাঢ্য উদ্বোধন হয়ে গেল ঢাকার বঙ্গবন্ধু জাতীয় স্টেডিয়ামে। ১৯৯৬ সালের পর এই দ্বিতীয়বার উপমহাদেশে বিশ্বকাপ ক্রিকেট ফিরে এল। ঐ বছর উপমহাদেশেরই একটি দেশ – শ্রীলঙ্কা – কাপটি জিতেছিল। এর ঠিক তের এবং চার বছর আগে কাপটি জিতেছিল যথাক্রমে ভারত ও পাকিস্তান। যেহেতু টেস্ট ক্রিকেটের কোন বিশ্ব প্রতিযোগিতা নেই, তাই সীমিত ওভারের এই একদিনের ক্রিকেট বিশ্বকাপই সবচেয়ে মর্যাদাপূর্ণ প্রতিযোগিতা। এমনিতে সারা দুনিয়ায় ক্রিকেট খেলে হাতে গোনা কয়েকটি দেশ। ফুটবল যেভাবে বিশ্বব্যাপী চর্চ্চিত একটি খেলা, ক্রিকেট সেরূপ নয়। আরো অনেক খেলার মতই ক্রিকেট আবিস্কৃত হয়েছিল ইংল্যাণ্ডে। প্রাক্তন ব্রিটিশ সাম্রাজ্যের অন্তর্ভুক্ত দেশগুলোতেই তা টিকে আছে, রাজার দেশটিতো আছেই, আর যেসব দেশ আছে সেগুলো হল ঐ রাজার দেশের ভূতপূর্ব উপনিবেশ। মূলতঃ ক্রিকেট এখনো হারানো ব্রিটিশ সাম্রাজ্য ও এর লুপ্ত প্রতাপের ছায়ামূর্তি ও প্রতীক হয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে, ঐ কমনওয়েলথ গেমসের মতই। এবার তিনটি দেশ মিলিতভাবে এর আয়োজক – বাংলাদেশ, ভারত ও শ্রীলঙ্কা। প্রাথমিক তালিকায় পাকিস্তান থাকলেও শ্রীলঙ্কান ক্রিকেটারদের উপর জঙ্গীদের সন্ত্রাসী হামলার পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে পাকিস্তানকে নিরাপদ ভেন্যু মনে করেনি ক্রিকেটের সর্বোচ্চ সংস্থা আইসিসি। ভাবনাটি অমূলক নয়। সন্ত্রাসীদের স্বর্গরাজ্যে পরিণত হওয়া ব্যর্থ রাষ্ট্রটিতে অনেকদিন ধরেই খেলতে যাচ্ছে না কোন দেশ।

উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানের দায়িত্ব দিয়ে আইসিসি বাংলাদেশকে দায়িত্বশীল ও গর্বিত করেছে। অনেকেরই মনে শঙ্কা ছিল, বাংলাদেশ পারবে তো? ফেব্রুয়ারীর সতের তারিখের জমকালো অনুষ্ঠান দিয়ে বাংলাদেশ ক্রিকেট বিশ্বকে তাক লাগিয়ে দিয়েছে, জানিয়েছে আমরাও পারি। যদিও সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠানের ডামাডোলের ভিতর ক্রিকেট কিছুটা হলেও উপেক্ষিত থেকেছে, তবু লেজার রশ্মি ও আতশবাজির মধ্য দিয়ে তিন দেশের নৃত্য-গীত উপস্থাপনা মন কেড়েছে লাখো দর্শকের। শুরুর ভুল উচ্চারণের ইংরেজী বক্তৃতামালা ছাড়া বাকী পুরো অনুষ্ঠানটি ছিল মন্ত্রমুগ্ধকর। রিকশায় চড়ে ১৪ দেশের অধিনায়কের স্টেডিয়ামে প্রবেশ বিদেশীদের কাছে অভিনব মনে হয়েছে, যদিও যন্ত্রেটানা সভ্যতার এই বিশ্বে মানুষে-টানা রিকশা কতখানি সমাদৃত হবে, তা ভাবনার বিষয়; তবে রিকশা মানববান্ধব না হলেও পরিবেশবান্ধব। শিল্পব্যাংকের সুউচ্চ খাড়া দেয়ালের ক্রিকেটও ছিল অভিনব। বহুবর্ণিল লেজার আলোর নাচানাচি, আতশবাজির ক্রমাগত উদগীরণ আর শিল্পীদের ঢেউখেলানো পাফরমেন্সের ভিতর কোন ছন্দপতন ঘটেনি। আমাদের কেবল মুখরক্ষাই হয়নি, মুখউজ্জ্বলও হয়েছে। যে বাংলাদেশকে দুনিয়া চেনে বন্যা ও ঘূর্ণিঝড় আক্রান্ত, বিপন্ন মানুষদের দরিদ্র দেশ হিসেবে, তার অমন জমকালো প্রদর্শনী কিছুটা বিভ্রম তৈরি করলেও পজিটিভ ধারণা সৃষ্টি করেছে। এখন প্রয়োজন বিদেশীদের এই জেগে ওঠা আগ্রহকে আমাদের সম্ভাবনাময় অথচ অবহেলিত পর্যটনশিল্পের বিকাশে কাজে লাগানো।

ক্রিকেট নিয়ে উপমহাদেশের মানুষদের উন্মাদনা কীরূপ এবং তা কোন উত্তুঙ্গ ছোঁয় তা জানে আইসিসি। খেলাটির জন্মভূমিতেও এখন আর তেমন দর্শক টানে না ক্রিকেট। এর একটি কারণ ক্রিকেট অত্যন্ত সময়সাপেক্ষ ও ধীরগতির খেলা। আজকের রকেট যুগে মানুষের হাতে সত্যিই অত সময় নেই কাজ ফেলে রেখে বসে বসে দিনভর ক্রিকেট দেখবে। উপমহাদেশের মানুষ বুঁদ হয়ে আজো খেলাটি দেখে, কেননা তাদের হাতে পর্যাপ্ত কাজ নেই। আগে ক্রিকেট বলতে ছিল টেস্ট ক্রিকেট, পাঁচদিন ধরে যা শম্বুকগতিতে চলত। আধুনিক মানুষের চাহিদা অনুযায়ী সীমিত ওভারের একদিনের খেলা চালু হয় ১৯৭৫ সালে। এখন আরো সংক্ষিপ্ত হয়েছে খেলাটি, এসেছে টোয়েন্টি-টোয়েন্টি ক্রিকেট। এভাবেই যুগের সাথে বদলে যাচ্ছে খেলাটি ও এর ফরম্যাট। ক্রিকেটারদের উপার্জন হয়ে উঠেছে চক্ষু চড়কগাছ হবার মত বিস্ময়কর, মর্ত্যে তারা স্বর্গের জীবনযাপনই করছেন। কেবল খ্যাতি ও মর্যাদা নয়, ক্রিকেট হয়ে উঠেছে স্বপ্নের এক ক্যারিয়ার। আশ্চর্য নয় যে, অনেক অভিভাবক এখন সন্তানদের ক্রিকেট নিয়ে মাতামাতিতে বিরক্ত না হয়ে বরং উৎসাহ দেন, আর এটাই হচ্ছে ভবিষ্যতে ভাল ক্রিকেটার পাবার অন্যতম পথ।

ক্রিকেট নিয়ে উপমহাদেশের দর্শকদের বিপুল মাতামাতি খেলাটির সর্বোচ্চ আসরটিকে যৌক্তিক নিয়মেই নিয়ে এসেছে ভারত-বাংলাদেশ-শ্রীলঙ্কায়। ভারতে ক্রিকেটের বরপুত্রদের সাধারণ জনগণ দেবতার আসনে বসিয়ে রাখেন। বস্তুতঃ বহু ভাষা, জাতি ও বর্ণের দেশ ভারতে ক্রিকেটের মত খুব কম জিনিষই আছে যা গোটা ভারতকে একত্রিত রাখে। বহুজাতিক কোম্পানীগুলোর জন্য ভারত হচ্ছে এক বিশাল পন্যবাজার, কেননা ভারতের মধ্যবিত্ত শ্রেনীটি, যেটির রয়েছে ক্রয়ক্ষমতা, তার আকার সমগ্র ইউরোপের জনসংখ্যার চেয়ে বেশী। সুতরাং তারা হুমড়ি খেয়ে পড়েছে ভারতে। ভারতীয় জনগণের ক্রিকেটপ্রীতিকে তারা ভালই কাজে লাগাচ্ছে ভোক্তার মন জয় করে নিতে। এছাড়া রয়েছে ভারতীয় ধনিকশ্রেনী যারা আইপিএলের মত টাকা ছড়ানো আসর বসিয়েছে ভারতে, ফলে পৃথিবীর সকল ক্রিকেটারই এখন ভারতমুখী। খেলাটির ভবিষ্যৎ যে উপমহাদেশেই আর একে অর্থনৈতিকভাবে বাঁচিয়ে রাখবে ভারতই – এটা জানে আইসিসি। জঙ্গী সন্ত্রাসে বিপর্যস্ত আর টুকরো টুকরো হয়ে পড়ার আশঙ্কাগ্রস্থ পাকিস্তানেও ক্রিকেটই হচ্ছে ঐক্যের সূত্র – যা সকল পাকিস্তানিকে একই আবেগে দোলায় ও একত্রিত রাখে ।

স্বাধীনতার আগে ও পরে বাংলাদেশের প্রধান খেলা ছিল ফুটবল। সত্তরের শেষভাগে ও আশির শুরুতে ফুটবল নিয়ে তীব্র মাতামাতি ছিল, সুপারস্টার ফুটবলেরা সাড়ম্বরে দল-বদল করতেন এবং ঈর্ষাজনক ট্রান্সফার ফি পেতেন। সে সময়ে ক্রিকেটের তেমন কোন জনপ্রিয়তা ছিল না। আশির দশকের মাঝামাঝি টেলিভিশনের কল্যাণে আমরা বিশ্বকাপ ও ইউরোপীয় ফুটবল দেখার সুযোগ পাই, তুলনায় আমাদের ফুটবলকে পানসে, বিবর্ণ মনে হয়। এ ছাড়া ক্লাব ফুটবলের ভালো ফুটবলাররা জাতীয় দলে পা বাঁচিয়ে খেলতো। আঞ্চলিক ফুটবলেও তেমন কোন সাফল্য আমরা পাইনি। এসবই দর্শকদের মন থেকে ফুটবলকে সরিয়ে দেয়। যেহেতু গুটিকয় দেশের মাঝে খেলাটি সীমিত, ক্রিকেটে ভাল ফলাফল করা অনেক সহজ, বাংলাদেশের তরুণ ক্রিকেটাররা তাই করে দেখিয়েছে। মালয়েশিয়ায় আইসিসি ট্রফি জয়লাভের মধ্য দিয়ে ক্রিকেটের যে বিজয়আনন্দযাত্রা শুরু হয়েছিল আজো তা অব্যাহত রয়েছে। মনে আছে সে সময়ে বিজয়ী দলটিকে সম্বর্ধনা জানাতে মানুষের ঢল নেমেছিল মানিক মিয়া এ্যাভেনুতে। গোটা দেশ ঐক্যবদ্ধ হয়েছিল ক্রিকেটারদের শুভেচ্ছা জানাতে, উদ্বেলিত হয়েছিল তাদের সাফল্যে, কেননা তা ছিল বাংলাদেশেরই সাফল্য। ঘরের মাটিতে বিশ্বকাপ ও জাতীয় দলের সাম্প্রতিক পারফরমেন্স আমাদের প্রত্যাশার পারদকে বহুঊর্ধ্বে তুলে দিয়েছে। বিশ্বকাপ নিয়ে উৎসাহের শেষ নেই মানুষদের। তারা দল বেঁধে ঢাকার আলোকসজ্জা দেখছে, বিশ্বাস করছে আন্তরিক হলে আমরাও আমাদের নোংরা শহরটিকে পরিচ্ছন্ন রাখতে পারি। পারি একটি চোখধাঁধানো অনুষ্ঠান বিশ্বকে উপহার দিতে, পথে পথে বর্ণিল আলোকমালার বিস্ময়কর সৌন্দর্য সাজাতে।

১৯৯৯ সালে বিশ্বকাপে প্রথম আবির্ভাবেই পরাশক্তি পাকিস্তানকে হারিয়ে বাংলাদেশ সাড়া ফেলেছিল। পুরো দেশ আনন্দ- উত্তেজনায় গর্জে উঠেছিল, যেন ১৯৭১ এর পরে আমরা আরো একবার পাকিস্তানকে হারালাম। তখন সংবাদপত্রের শিরোনাম ছিল ‘বাঘের গর্জন শুনেছে বিশ্ব’। ভারতকে হারানো ছিল গত বিশ্বকাপের বড় অঘটন, যে কারণে ভারতের বিশ্বকাপ মিশনই শেষ হয়ে গিয়েছিল, একশ কোটি ভারতীয় চরম হতাশার তিমিরে ডুবে গিয়েছিল। ভারতের পর ক্রিকেটের আরেক পরাশক্তি দক্ষিন আফ্রিকাকে হারিয়ে আমরা শক্তির জানান দিয়েছিলাম, উজ্জ্বল সম্ভাবনা তৈরি করেছিলাম কোয়ার্টার ফাইনালে খেলার। কিন্তু পঁচা শামুক আয়ারল্যান্ডে পা কেটে বিদায় নিতে হয়েছিল। আজকের খেলা সেই পচা শামুকটির সাথেই। এবার আর পা কাটলে চলবে না, কেননা তাহলে কোয়ার্টার ফাইনালে খেলার স্বপ্ন ও সম্ভাবনা মলিন হয়ে যাবে। তাই সতর্কভাবে ডিঙ্গিয়ে যেতে হবে অপেক্ষাকৃত দুর্বল দল আয়ারল্যাণ্ড ও নেদারল্যান্ডকে, আর প্রস্তুত হতে হবে বড় দলগুলোকে মোকাবেলা করার জন্য, যাদের অন্ততঃ একটিকে পরাস্ত করার সামর্থ্য বাংলাদেশের আছে।

ক্রিকেট বা ফুটবল নিয়ে কেন মানুষের এই উন্মত্ত্বতা, এই মাতামাতি? বিজ্ঞানের অগ্রযাত্রার কারণে ও মার্ক্সসবাদী দর্শনের প্রসারের ফলে সারা বিশ্বেই ধর্মবিশ্বাসে চিড় ধরেছে মানুষের। রাজনৈতিক নেতাদের প্রতিও আস্থা নেই তাদের। সাম্প্র্রতিক আরববিশ্বে দৌর্দণ্ডপ্রতাপশালী রাজনৈতিক নেতাদের বিরুদ্ধে সাধারণ জনগনের ক্ষোভ ও আন্দোলন সে কথাই প্রমাণ করে। ফলে জনগণ আজ নায়কশূন্য। এই শূন্যস্থান পূরণ করছে মঞ্চের গায়ক, চলচিত্রের নায়ক ও মাঠের খেলোয়াররা। তাইতো একজন শচীন টেন্ডুলকার বা ব্রায়ান লারাকে নিয়ে মানুষ এত মেতে ওঠে। জাতিতে জাতিতে, রাষ্ট্রে রাষ্ট্রে সংঘর্ষের সেই প্রাচীন দিনগুলোও সভ্য(?) মানুষ পিছে ফেলে এসেছে। তবে প্রাচীন বিবাদ ও ঈর্ষার বিষয়গুলো এখনো রয়ে গেছে বিভিন্ন জাতিসত্ত্বার মাঝে। খেলা হয়ে উঠেছে ঐ পুরোনো বিবাদ মীমাংসার নতুন সভ্যরূপ। মাঠগুলো আসলে যুদ্ধক্ষেত্রের প্রতীকিরূপ। ফুটবল বা ক্রিকেট দলটি গোটা দেশ বা জাতিকে প্রতিনিধিত্ব করে। ঐ ১১জন যোদ্ধা, যারা কাঁধে করে বয়ে বেড়ান একটি দেশের প্রত্যাশার বিপুল ভার। জন্মলগ্ন থেকে বৈরী দুই প্রতিবেশী, ভারত ও পাকিস্তানের মাঝে সরাসরি যুদ্ধ হয়েছে তিনটি। ফলে বৈরীতা না কমে আরো উত্তুঙ্গ হয়েছে। দু’দেশের মতলববাজ রাজনীতিকরা নিজেদের হীন স্বার্থেই জিইয়ে রেখেছে এই বৈরীতা, যুদ্ধংদেহী করে রেখেছে দুদেশের নিরীহ জনগণকে। এই বিবাদ এখন প্রতীকায়িত রূপ নিয়েছে ক্রিকেট মাঠে। সেখানে ম্যাচ জয় যেন যুদ্ধ জয়। একই বিষয় দেখি তিক্ত ইতিহাসের সাক্ষী দুই প্রতিবেশী অস্ট্রেলিয়া ও নিউজিল্যাণ্ডের মাঝে; মূল ভূখণ্ড ব্রিটেন ও প্রাক্তন উপনিবেশ অস্ট্রেলিয়ার মাঝে এ্যাসেজ সিরিজের তীব্র প্রতিদ্ধন্ধিতা তাদের ঐতিহাসিক বিরোধেরই সাক্ষী।

ক্রিকেট যেভাবে আমাদের জনগোষ্ঠিকে ঐক্যবদ্ধ করেছে তা এককথায় অভূতপূর্ব ও আশা জাগানিয়া। বাঙালী এমনিতেই বহু মত ও পথে বিভক্ত এক স্বাধীন জাতিসত্ত্বা। কবি শঙ্খ ঘোষ লিখেছেন, ‘আমি পাঁচজন মানুষকে পঁচিশটি রাস্তায় যেতে বলি, তাতে প্রত্যেকেই পেয়ে যাবেন আড়াইটি করে শালপাতা।’ বাঙালী এমনি এক বহুধাবিভক্ত জাতি। সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে সে বিভক্ত রয়েছে দুটি প্রধান রাজনৈতিক শিবিরে, যাদের মাঝে মতপার্থক্য, স্বার্থের সংঘাত, হানাহানির তিক্তরূপ ধারণ করেছে। ভালো হোক বা মন্দ হোক, সরকারী দলের প্রতিটি উদ্যোগকে নিন্দা করাই বিরোধী দলের স্বভাব। প্রতিবেশী দেশ ভারতেও আমরা দেখি কিছু মৌলিক বিষয় যেমন রাষ্ট্রের নিরাপত্তা, জাতীয় ঐক্য ও অখণ্ডতা রক্ষা, সন্ত্রাস দমন, অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়ন ইত্যাদিতে বিরোধী দল সরকারী দলের পাশেই থাকে। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশে এই সুস্থ রাজনীতির সংস্কৃতি গড়ে ওঠেনি। দেশের ভিতর এই মৌল বিভাজন বাংলাদেশের জন্য অত্যন্ত অশুভকর।

বহির্বিশ্বে আমাদের যে ইমেজ – তা খুব একটা স্বস্তিকর নয়। বিশ্ব বাংলাদেশকে চেনে প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগের শিকার, বিধ্বস্ত এক জনপদ হিসেবে, যা অতিদরিদ্র ও অসহায়। দুর্নীতিতে বিশ্বসেরা হয়ে আমরা যে তালিকার শীর্ষে উঠেছি, তাও আমাদের জন্য মর্যাদাকর কিছু বয়ে আনেনি। সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে আমাদের সেনারা জাতিসংঘের শান্তিমিশনে চমৎকার ভূমিকা পালন করে কিছু প্রশংসা অর্জন করেছে। খেলাধূলায় আমরা কোন পর্যায়েই উঠতে পারিনি। কেবল ক্রিকেটই একটি খেলা যা আমরা বিশ্বপর্যায়ে খেলি। যেখানে পরাক্রমশালী চীনকেও আমরা অনায়াসে হারিয়ে দিই, দিয়েছি সদ্যসমাপ্ত এশিয়ান গেমসে। ফুটবলের পরাক্রমশালী দেশ হল্যাণ্ডকে আমরা সহজেই হারিয়েছি ক্রিকেটে; বিশ্ব ফুটবলের সেরা দেশ ব্রাজিল বা পৃথিবীর শীর্ষ অর্থনৈতিক ও সামরিক শক্তি আমেরিকা পাত্তা পাবে না আমাদের কাছে। ক্রিকেটের অন্যতম শক্তিধর দেশ নিউজিল্যাণ্ড যখন আমাদের দামাল ছেলেদের হাতে ‘হোয়াইট ওয়াশ’ হয়, তখন ক্রিকেট নিয়ে আমরা মেতে না উঠে পারিনা। ক্রিকেট নিয়ে তাই আমাদের এত গর্ব, এত উত্তেজনা। এটি হয়ে উঠেছে আমাদের জয়ের, অহংয়ের প্রতীক। ক্রিকেট হয়ে উঠতে পারে আমাদের জাতীয় ঐক্যেরও প্রতীক!

Gone are the days of Airline Travel Agents' strong grip on airline travelers. I remember that in the early eighties, we used to call this travel agent in New York City who specialized in travel to Bangladesh. He had absolutely no competition. Everybody had to go to him if they wanted to travel home.

This travel agent never returned any phone calls from the customers; he did not have the time. People could not go to the other agents because they were not discounters and this guy was. He was the only game in town.

Anyway, few years down the road, a competitor emerged. Service provided to customers improved a bit but not so much.

Fast forward to today. Travelers have so much choices now. They can still book their reservation with travel agents. But they can also do their own bookings online. And buy the tickets themselves with credit cards. And there are quite a few reputable online travel companies.

Competition is fierce among travel agents and the online travel companies. Yet some brick-and-mortar travel
agents take advantage of the unsuspecting traveler. For example, some unscrupulous travel agents will charge 1% to 3% credit card surcharge if a traveler decides to pay for the ticket by a credit card rather than by cash or a check! That adds about $30 to $50 per ticket! And then there are some travel agents who refuse to accept American Express becasue in a dispute, American Express acts very fairly, and makes it less burdensome for the cardholder to file a complaint. I, therefore, always buy high ticket items with American Express. And airline tickets fall into that category for me.

Anyway, by refusing to accept credit cards for the purchase of tickets, some of these agents deprive the travelers to accrue bonus miles or bonus points as well. And not only that, when an airline ticket is purchased with a credit card, in most instances, if not all, travelers get automatic accidental death insurance and lost/delayed luggage coverage. If they cannot pay by credit card because the agent charges them sur-charge, the traveler then loses these benefits accorded free of charge to the card holders by the credit card issuing companies.

Fortunately for the travelers, things have changed quite a bit. Travelers now have a choice to book their own flights online at their own convenience. And not just for domestic flights but for international flights as well. Travelers can pay with credit cards without being penalized by as much as 3%. And since no paper tickets are issued no hassle either.

I buy all my domestic travel tickets online. No ifs and buts about it. No exceptions. I did not, however, had the opportunity to buy international ticket online yet. But my friends have. They bought New York City (USA) to Dhaka (Bangladesh) roundtrip airline tickets.

They used the online travel company CheapOAir.

Now that I know, the next international flight I take, I know I will buy my ticket online, or at a minimum, check out the prices from my own computer while I sip my favorite drink :-)

Does this mean that there aren't any reputable travel agents? Of course not. But if your travel agent fits the mold above, you know that you have a choice to be your own travel agent. At a minimum, nothing beats the convenience of booking your own flight at the time you see fit, and that includes outside of the normal business hours. These online travel companies are open 24/7.

             One, two, three, four, five ... well, I have lost count how many times I have watched this video. I played it over and over again, and yet I could not figure out how he did it!

             I think I can safely bet that you will watch the video more than once. I think I am quite certain about that :-) That is not the point though. The point is how many times you will actually watch this 40-second video. Will you be able to keep count? I don't know.
