Vaccines are one of humanity’s greatest achievements; they save six lives every minute! Thanks to vaccines many diseases are now preventable today.

Here is a closer look.

1. Smallpox

At one point in history, smallpox was “one of the most devastating diseases to humanity.” With the first cases dating as early as 1350 BCE, the disease caused millions of deaths.

But in 1796, Edward Jenner created the smallpox vaccine — the first successful vaccine to be developed. Today, thanks to the power of that vaccine, investments, action, and advocacy, smallpox was officially eradicated in 1980. Smallpox is the only infectious disease to achieve this distinction, making it one of the most notable successes in public health.

2. Polio

While polio has existed since pre-historic times, it was not formally recognized until 1840. Polio is an infectious disease that primarily impacts children under five years old, The disease is spread from person-to-person via contaminated food or water or “the faecal-oral route.” The disease itself will multiply in the intestine and invade an individual’s nervous system, leading to paralysis. One in 200 infections lead to irreversible paralysis.

Polio even became “the most feared disease in the world” in the late 19th and 20th centuries. But by the 1950s, Dr. Jonas Salk created the first successful polio vaccine. Eventually, Dr. Albert Sabin created second polio vaccine.

Since the introduction of these vaccines, polio cases have decreased by over 99%, thanks to the efforts of vaccination campaigns and strengthened disease surveillance. Polio is near eradication globally, but reaching the remaining strongholds of the disease is crucial to preventing a resurgence.

3. Measles

Measles is highly contagious and can lead to severe complications or death. This airborne disease is transmitted when a person infected with measles coughs, sneezes, or breathes on another. An estimated 107,500 people died from measles in 2023, most of them children under the age of five.

Prior to the vaccine in 1963, there were an estimated 2.6 million deaths each year.

Thanks to the vaccine and vaccination campaigns, over 60 million deaths from measles were averted between 2000-2023.

4. Tetanus

Tetanus is caused by an infection of a cut or injury that contains the bacteria that causes tetanus. The “spores” of the bacterium that causes it can be found virtually everywhere – surfaces of skin, rusty tools, soil, and more. Tetanus cannot be transmitted from person to person and is preventable through immunization with the tetanus-toxoid-containing vaccine. Cases are most common among newborns and pregnant women who have not been immunized.

There has been a 97% decrease in newborn deaths due to tetanus since 1988, when over 700,000 newborns died within their first month of life due to tetanus — thanks to vaccination efforts.

5. Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can lead to cervical cancer. Infact, cervical cancers account for 90% of HPV-related cancers in women.

The HPV vaccine is effective in preventing cancers from HPV. When the vaccine is administered early, it can reduce the “risk of serious cervical cell changes by 99% for the HPV types most likely to cause cervical cancer.” Higher vaccination rates could prevent hundreds of thousands of cervical cancer cases every year.

The work to end these diseases is not done yet and vaccines are important tools in the global health toolbox to get us there. That’s why we work to ensure everyone has equal access to them— because equal access to vaccines means equal opportunities to live a life of dignity and equality for everyone, everywhere.

Investments in international aid do a lot of good – from protecting people in vulnerable situations to fostering economic growth. But recent cuts to international aid, including the US pause to almost all international aid for 90 days, the UK’s recent cuts to international aid, and others, hurt millions of people globally. As is all too often the case when crisis strikes, women and girls will face the harshest consequences.

Dr. Stellah Bosire, the Executive Director and Founder of the Africa Center for Health Systems and Gender Justice explains how societies will need to rally around women and girls to help protect their rights. Here’s a closer look.

“We will see a continued widening of heath inequities, and a regression in ways we understand diseases.”

The intersection of health and gender justice

The Africa Center for Health Systems and Gender Justice is a social enterprise led by women, for women, tackling the critical link between health and gender justice.

Women are not just patients — they are frontline health workers, advocates, and economic drivers in their communities. But when health systems are underfunded, women’s ability to care for their families, build businesses, and lead change is severely undermined.

“When we have a woman with HIV, children, we ask, ‘how do we improve her life?’ Economic independence.”

Cuts to health programs don’t just reduce care; they destabilize entire communities. Women-led organizations addressing gender-based violence, economic empowerment, and public health are at risk of shutting down. With the 90-day aid pause, that risk is now reality.

A cut to funding could be “fatal”

Shortly after the 90-day US international aid pause was announced, resulting in cuts to funding these critical organizations, Dr. Bosire set up a simple survey. The survey was for organizations to explain how they had been impacted and what the potential long-term outcomes of a pause to international aid would be for their communities.

She received responses from 275 organizations across 11 countries – all of them, she said, in sub-Saharan Africa. Some groups reported they are fully unable to work, turning both patients and staff away. Others reported the stoppage would inhibit critically important services, including:

Gender-based violence resources

Outreach for high-risk populations, including the LGBT community and adolescent women and young girls

Provision of antiretroviral treatment and viral load testing

Accessibility of HIV testing and preventive measures, like PrEP

Ability to administer the BCG vaccine to prevent tuberculosis

Support groups for adolescent and young people living with HIV

Maternal health care services

Mental health support

Survey respondents also said the toll of the pause is “massive,” “enormous,” “too large to quantify,” and, most concerningly, “fatal.” They predicted that a significant disruption would result in major loss of life, reversal of global health progress, the emergence of drug-resistant strains of deadly diseases, and significant monetary and job losses.

“We will see a continued widening of heath inequities, and a regression in ways we understand diseases,” Dr. Bosire says. “We will see an increase in people not just being infected with HIV but people with late-stage AIDS – a picture we have not seen in decades.”

Impacts on women and communities

Beyond the immediate health risks, the cuts to these programs jeopardize women’s empowerment and progress towards gender equality, and thus, global development overall. Programs funded through international aid, like those through USAID and PEPFAR, provide more than medicine – they offer economic opportunities and support small businesses led by women, enabling women to become financially independent, escape dangerous situations, and more.

“When we have a woman with HIV, children, we ask, ‘how do we improve her life?’ Economic independence,” Dr. Bosire says.

Organizations like Dr. Bosire’s, that are funded through international aid programs, help women in vulnerable situations achieve economic independence. And that independence means fewer missed opportunities. It means more women and girls in school, pursuing careers in healthcare, driving change in their communities, and more.

Without these critical investments, these initiatives and resources won’t be available, setting back hard-fought progress on global health, development, and gender equality.

You’ve likely heard the phrase “foreign aid” a lot in the past few days, and for good reason. Several countries have announced cuts in their aid budgets this year.

To understand the implications of these cuts, which are part of a broader trend in cuts to development spending, it’s important to understand what foreign aid really is.

Keep reading to find out more.

What is foreign aid?

Foreign aid, international aid, ODA, or “global aid,” refers to the transfer of resources and money from mostly high-income countries to low- and middle-income countries. Aid can either be given by richer countries directly to countries in need or to a multilateral institution (like the UN or World Bank) to pass the aid onto countries or projects. The money and resources provided are used to support economic development and help fight poverty.

But here’s the thing: global problems today are much greater and will require even more funding to address them. And proportionate to economic growth, the share of aid to Africa from G7 countries actually hit a 50-year low in 2022.

Where do the funding and resources go?

“Foreign aid” covers a wide range of projects and sectors. It can help people in vulnerable situations – through lifesaving health programs, emergency food aid, and humanitarian aid. It can also go towards helping counties grow their economies – think aid to energy, infrastructure, and education.

The real impact of foreign aid is far-reaching. From providing lifesaving medications to fight HIV, to strengthening global security, here are some examples of how aid impacts real life.

It provides lifesaving medication and treatments

Foreign aid enables many lifesaving programs that advance global prosperity. Global health programs are a big part of this. Funding for antiretroviral treatments to fight HIV/AIDS and ensure babies are born HIV-free, cervical cancer screenings, malaria prevention tools, and medicines to fight tuberculosis are some of the many things foreign aid programs provide.

Despite a waiver for lifesaving assistance, many of these programs remain unable to provide these critically important services during the US 90-day foreign aid freeze.

It ensures people in emergency situations have access to basic necessities

Food, water, and shelter. When emergencies strike, humanitarian aid ensures these three things are provided to the people who need them the most.

During the US aid freeze, soup kitchens in Sudan, refugee camps in Mauritania, emergency shelters in Ukraine, Sudan, and Syria have had to reduce or halt services.

But beyond the basics, it fosters growth over time

Foreign aid plays a pivotal role in fostering economic development, enabling countries to build the capacity needed to eventually graduate from aid dependency. Through investments in critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare, aid helps establish a foundation for sustainable growth.

The World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) exemplifies this approach, providing low-interest loans and grants to the world’s poorest countries to boost economic growth, reduce inequality, and improve living conditions. Since its creation in 1960, IDA has helped 36 countries “graduate” from aid, enabling them to finance their own development and integrate into the global economy — and 19 are now lenders to IDA. This demonstrates how strategic aid can drive long-term prosperity.

It strengthens global security

Investments in foreign aid can have a sizable return in strengthening global security. In fact, every $1 spent on activities that spur economic growth and political stability can avert spending $103 on future conflicts. Activities that fall under this category include those that create jobs, improve public services, and make governments more transparent and accountable – which fall under the category of foreign aid.

Investments in foreign aid can help boost economic growth and political stability by fostering economic opportunities, strengthening institutions, assisting in the better delivery of public services, and more. Ultimately, these investments also result in building strategic partnerships globally, which strengthens global security overall.

So…what does this all mean?

ODA and foreign aid impact lives and livelihoods globally in more ways than we think. It provides lifesaving medicine, delivers the necessities to survive and thrive to those who need it the most, and strengthens global security.

A pause in aid means millions around the world won’t have access to medicines that keep them alive and keep others safe from outbreaks of dangerous disease. A pause creates confusion and chaos for everyone, and it fuels instability and insecurity – making everyone, everywhere, less safe.

In 2005, Nelson Mandela delivered a speech in the center of London and called on a new generation to be great. He had three clear demands – to make trade fair, cancel unpayable debt, and increase and improve the quality of aid. He called on all of us to act for justice.

His call inspired millions of people to become active citizens, who in turn pushed their governments to deliver bold policies that have had a lasting impact for hundreds of millions of people. His speech 20 years ago proved that when we come together and speak as one, we can push our leaders to be much bolder. We can give them the confidence and the push they need to work with other leaders and create historic change.

It sparked an era of action and catalyzed a new path for progress on international development that had previously been absent. Debt relief was expanded, aid grew, and some international reforms were delivered.

An incredible legacy

Mandela’s call and the movement that he helped build is an extraordinary story of human progress.

In 2005 more than 1 in 5 people lived in extreme poverty. Today it’s less than 1 in 10 people. There are more girls in school than ever before. In fact, the gender gap in primary and secondary education has been eliminated.

As of 2023, the average lifespan of humans is now 73.2 years, up from 68.1 in 2025. That’s 2,000 more days on this planet to learn, live, and become the leaders of tomorrow. And thanks to improved healthcare facilities and vaccines, fewer people are dying from preventable diseases, like malaria and tuberculosis.

Our work is not done yet

Despite global progress over the last 20 years, there is still work to be done. The climate crisis is hitting those who are the least responsible for causing it the hardest, and in turn, deepening existing inequalities 2024 was simultaneously the hottest and wettest year on record, with heatwaves and floods displacing millions of people.

Over 700 million people still went to bed hungry in 2024 and compared to 20 years ago, people are twice as likely to live in extreme conditions, with 1 in 6 children living in areas affected by conflict.

There is still work to be done to create a more just and equal world for everyone, everywhere — because none of us are truly equal until all of us are equal.

It’s in our hands to create a more just and equal world

On February 11, 2025, to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy and that great speech he delivered in Trafalgar Square 20 years ago, policy makers, activists, artists and citizens came together to be inspired again.

The day started with a high-level policy event, which charted the huge progress that’s been made in the last 20 years, as well as highlighting the work that urgently needs to be done.

Our ONE Activists sprang into action, lobbying politicians directly in Westminster. Showing our leaders that we have the passion and evidence, and that all we need is action.

The day finished in Trafalgar Square, on the very same spot where Nelson Mandela delivered his speech. The evening saw a lively programme of events, including music and rousing speeches, before finishing with a dazzling light show onto Nelson’s Column.

Help light the way toward global progress

Mandela’s legacy is a reminder that great victories can be born in the hardest of times. After 27 years in prison, he led South Africa to freedom. Twenty years ago, his speech was the catalyst for millions of ordinary people demanding a fairer world. It’s now on us to fulfill Mandela’s dream by daring to be that great generation he urged us to be.

The challenges we face are all linked. Wars, the climate crisis, the pandemic, and much more cannot be tackled by one country alone. The world must unite around solutions that are both urgent and lasting.

South Africa is chairing the G20 in 2025, making it the first African country to do so. The focus is on people-driven sustainable development, inclusive economic growth, food security, employment, innovation, and reducing inequality.

This year’s G20 is an opportunity to put the continent at the forefront of global solutions that will benefit people globally, and in turn, help Mandela’s legacy live on.

Mandela stood for freedom. Freedom for each of us to achieve our potential, underpinned by a belief that every life has equal value. We need to believe that progress is possible again. As Mandela said himself, it always seems impossible until it’s done.

Africa is a continent of immense natural wealth and remarkable cultural diversity. It is also home to the world’s youngest population. Despite this extraordinary potential, Africa faces a convergence of global crises, particularly environmental ones, as illustrated by the impact of fast fashion. Yet Africa is far from being defeated by these obstacles. With its dynamic youth and abundant potential, the continent is turning challenges into opportunities, positioning itself as a key player in responsible fashion. By blending visionary creativity with ancestral craftsmanship, Africa is reshaping the fashion industry, and offering sustainable solutions that challenge traditional consumption models.

Africa is not just a source of inspiration for global fashion — it is an active force in transforming the industry toward sustainability.

The impacts of fast fashion on the continent

Ghana, like other African countries, bears the heavy burden of fast fashion’s consequences. Every week, approximately 15 million used garments arrive at Tema, West Africa’s main textile import hub. While intended for resale, a significant proportion of these clothes end up in open-air depositories, like those near Kantamanto market.

Nearly half of these garments are discarded in landfills or the oceans, causing severe pollution of both marine and terrestrial ecosystems, according to a 2020 UN report. This phenomenon not only endangers local biodiversity but also depletes the country’s natural resources. Similarly, the textile industry’s contribution to global environmental crises, including 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, worsens waste management issues.

Julia Faure, co-founder of Loom, a sustainable and ethical clothing brand, explains that countries like Ghana are overwhelmed by immense volumes of low-quality garments, often impossible to recycle. The resulting ecological crisis transcends local boundaries, underscoring the urgency of rethinking consumption habits globally.

The damage caused by fast fashion extends far beyond the visible waste. The excessive production of cheap garments depletes resources and generates significant greenhouse gas emissions. Faure notes a staggering fact: the textile industry produces more CO2 than the entire aviation sector.

This pollution exacerbates the climate crisis, transforming fast fashion into a global environmental challenge.

Upcycling as a sustainable solution

Despite this grim reality, hopeful solutions are emerging. Ghana’s Kantamanto market exemplifies this transition, where more than 30,000 people are responsible for recirculating 25 million pieces of secondhand clothing every month through resale, reuse, repair, and remanufacturing. This supports the local economy while significantly reducing environmental impact. This circular economy model, which integrates recycling and upcycling, proves that sustainability can coexist with economic dynamism.

Ghanaian creators and artisans are reimagining textile production by combining traditional techniques with sustainable practices. Upcycling, which transforms waste into resources, has become a powerful and essential response to this crisis — not only for Ghana but for other African nations facing similar challenges. These efforts highlight Africa’s capacity to innovate, create value through sustainability, and shape a more responsible future.

African fashion represents a measured response to overconsumption, blending cultural heritage with solutions to contemporary challenges.

How African designers are redefining global fashion

Solutions to pollution caused by fast fashion aren’t the only way the continent is transforming the fashion industry. This transformation is also driven by its designers, who blend cultural heritage, innovation, and sustainability together to reimagine the concept of luxury. Here are a few you should know about.

Imane Ayissi, Cameroon

As the first sub-Saharan designer to join Paris Fashion Week’s official calendar, Ayissi combines authenticity and sustainability in his creations. Using materials like bogolan and raffia, he anchors luxury in tradition while advocating for environmentally responsible fashion. His use of raffia — a durable, plant-based fiber — represents a commitment to elegance and ethics, proving that luxury can embrace both sustainability and tradition.

Yves Saint Laurent, Algeria

Born in Oran, Algeria, fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent acknowledged the deep influence of his Algerian heritage on his work. “Our world back then was [in] Oran, not Paris. Neither Algiers, the metaphysical city of Camus, nor Marrakech, with its soothing pink magic. Oran was a cosmopolitan hub of merchants from everywhere, a city shimmering in a patchwork of colors under North Africa’s calm sun,” he once said. The vibrant colors and flowing forms in his collections reflect this cultural richness, showing how North African heritage shaped one of the greatest icons of fashion.

Beyond designers, luxury fashion houses increasingly explore Africa’s rich traditions. Dior-Uniwax’s 2020 Cruise Collection, which incorporated African textiles, and Hermès’ use of Algerian bogolan in their designs demonstrate how African craftsmanship is influencing global haute couture.

Every piece — from Ghana’s kente to Algeria’s bogolan — tells a story of cultural significance. Unlike mass production, these creations honor the environment and the artisans behind them, offering a human-centered and sustainable vision of luxury. African fashion represents a measured response to overconsumption, blending cultural heritage with solutions to contemporary challenges. The continent is establishing itself as a leader in redefining luxury, and proving that art, tradition, and environmental responsibility can harmonize. Here are a few pieces that exemplify just that.

Bogolan from Mali

Bogolan, a handwoven, naturally dyed fabric from Mali, embodies slow fashion. Free from chemicals and reliant on traditional techniques, it challenges the mass production paradigm while promoting eco-friendly practices.

Kente from Ghana

Kente, handwoven in Ghana, is a powerful expression of Ghanaian artistry. Today, brands like Studio 189 are modernizing it for global fashion markets, proving that tradition and innovation can coexist. Kente has become a symbol of sustainable luxury that supports local production while celebrating cultural identity.

Haïk and Burnous from Algeria

The haïk, traditionally worn by Algerian women, has been reimagined in contemporary collections as a timeless symbol of elegance. Similarly, the burnous — a high-quality woolen garment — has inspired luxury brands like Dior and Hermès, which incorporate its essence into their collections, showcasing the global appeal of African heritage.

Africa is reinventing fashion and the world

Africa is not just a source of inspiration for global fashion — it is an active force in transforming the industry toward sustainability. Visionaries like Yves Saint Laurent, who drew deeply from his North African roots, and contemporary designers like Imane Ayissi, Kenneth Ize, and Sarah Diouf are demonstrating that fashion can be both ethical and innovative.

By reintegrating traditional craftsmanship and challenging harmful fast fashion practices, Africa’s designers are reshaping the luxury industry. This movement reflects a broader transformation, where Africa is driving innovation across sectors, from green energy to sustainable agriculture.

By celebrating local talent, preserving cultural heritage, and embracing eco-responsible initiatives, Africa is paving the way for a future where economic growth and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. As the continent reshapes global fashion, it lays the foundation for a more equitable and resource-conscious world.

The holiday season is here, and that means it’s time to start thinking about gifts. In that spirit, we want to shed some light on some amazing African-made products that make a great holiday (or anytime of the year!) gift.

Here are 7 African-made gifts to add to your holiday shopping list ASAP.

Jewelry or Home Goods from Ashepa

Ashepa was founded in 2017 by Kenyan-born Chetna. Her passion for “the wealth of craftsmanship native to the country I love<s>,</s>” is what drove her to found Ashepa. Her jewelry and home goods brand are a nod to the craft and culture of Kenya!

A bag from Trashy Bags Africa

Say no more. Trashy Bags Africa works to fight plastic waste in Ghana by upcycling plastic waste into variety of bags – think tote bags, crossbody bags, pencil cases, and more.

A handmade gift from Okapi

Farm-to-table but make it fashionable. Okapi is founded on the African philosophy of ubuntu – the idea that “I am because we are,” which is the ethos behind this brand. Hand made in Africa, these artisanal leather goods would make a cool addition to any holiday gift list.

Socks from Afrisocks

Ok, we know that getting socks isn’t always at the top of everyone’s gift list, but trust us, these socks are worth it. Afrisocks come in fun colors and patterns, and these Ghana-made socks are fun and useful gift to give anyone this holiday season.

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about Africa, so that’s where we come in. We’re setting the record straight about what you really need to know about Africa.

Here are 3 common misconceptions about Africa, and the real facts.

Myth 1: There is little economic growth in Africa

This myth couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality, three out of four Africans are entrepreneurs, and one out of five working-class Africans are thinking of starting a business. If that’s not flipping that myth on its head, we don’t know what is!

Myth 2: Africans don’t have food

Another myth that can’t be more far from the truth. Africa is a global food contributor. In fact, 70% of the world’s cocoa is from just two countries – Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana!

Myth 3: Africa’s population doesn’t matter globally

Just another myth that we are flipping on its head. Africa has the largest and youngest working population, with 1.2 billion people. And by 2050, this will double to 2.5 billion! Last we checked, a population of 2.5 billion is something that holds a lot of weight.

As long as there are myths out there about Africa, we’ll be around to fight them. Watch our video below to learn more and help us myth-bust.

Our Youth Ambassador, Eden Tadesse, shares how in a world facing unprecedented challenges, Africa’s potential to shape global health, economy, and sustainability is more important than ever.

Bono, lead singer of U2 and co-founder of ONE, has increased global attention on African issues by drawing inspiration from the resilience and advocacy of Africans themselves. In the 1980s, the suffering caused by Ethiopia’s famine moved him to act. Since then, he has championed social justice and poverty reduction, advocating for debt relief and HIV/AIDS prevention, issues affecting millions across Africa.

During the Gates Foundation’s 2023 Goalkeepers, Bono acknowledged me and my country of origin, Ethiopia, in a video statement, saying, “your beautiful country is one of the reasons I started doing what I do today.” His lifelong commitment shows how influential individuals can mobilize resources and inspire others to join critical causes.

The importance of African voices

While African leaders and activists have long worked to shape their futures, global discussions have not always fully acknowledged their voices. Today, efforts like ONE’s are helping amplify these perspectives and prioritize African-led decision-making.

In many cases, international policies are crafted without adequate input from African nations. This oversight perpetuates a cycle of inequality and misrepresentation. ONE’s long-term commitment to elevating African perspectives means we are not asking for a seat at the table; we are demanding true representation and participation in shaping our own future.

The potential of Africa’s youth

Africa is the world’s youngest continent. By 2050, one in four people will be African. This “youth boom” presents opportunities for economic growth and innovation but also poses risks if challenges like education, employment, and infrastructure are neglected.

Furthermore, Africa is facing the harsh realities of climate change. Globally, more than 1.2 billion people are projected to face displacement by 2050 due to climate-related challenges, with Africa being the most affected continent in the world.

When compared with the rest of the world, health disparities in Africa are more stark, particularly regarding vaccine access and healthcare infrastructure. The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened these gaps, revealing the urgent need for investment in healthcare systems across the continent. For instance, only a staggering 8% of the African population has received essential vaccination against COVID-19, compared to global averages.

Africa’s role in the global economy

With investments in agriculture, sustainable practices and infrastructure, Africa has the potential to achieve food security and become a key player in global food supply chains, provided systemic barriers are addressed.

It’s no secret that international partnerships are crucial in unlocking Africa’s potential. Organizations like ONE are forging such alliances and advocating for equitable solutions. This approach aligns with a broader understanding that global prosperity is interconnected.

Africa is the future – so let’s act now

I believe prioritizing Africa isn’t just an ethical imperative; it’s a global necessity. ONE’s renewed focus is timely and critical. Through our work at ONE, we will continue to advocate strongly for equitable investments in healthcare and economic opportunities.

Africa’s growth and stability are critical not only for Africans, but for a more equitable and sustainable global future. It’s time to act now.

For millions of children, vaccinations can make the difference to ensure a healthy life filled with possibility. When a child is protected from infectious diseases, they can go to school. Their parents can go to work. And their community can thrive.

The world has made remarkable progress in vaccinating children over the past 24 years, thanks to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Since it was founded in 2000, Gavi has raised over $22 billion in direct contributions to support immunization efforts in 78 lower-income countries.

And these investments have delivered. According to the latest Gavi Progress Report, Gavi has helped prevent over 18.8 million future deaths through its support for routine immunization programs in lower-income countries. And in total, Gavi has helped immunize over 1.1 billion children.

These numbers are impressive and a model for what works when we partner together for a healthier world.

And if you live in one of the countries that supports Gavi, you can take pride in this remarkable progress.

That’s right: if you live in the UK, you helped Gavi avert over 4 million deaths since 2000. Are you German? You helped immunize almost 56 million children through routine immunization.

Check out the impact of Gavi’s top 15 sovereign donors below and see how you are helping change lives.

Given the results used in this tool do not go beyond 2023, total contributions pledged for the periods 2000-2010, 2011-2015, 2016-2020 are counted. For the 2021-2025 period, contributions pledged for the years 2021-2023 are included. Funding for the 2021-2025 period that have not yet been allocated to a specific year are not included.
