As I scrolled through the news feed this morning I noticed that Jimmy Buffett had been on Jimmy Fallon last night...

The headline says he's offering drinking advice and
I don't really need any as I'm not a big drinker, but some of you may. He offers that the MOST sure fire cure for a hangover is "Don't Get Drunk" ... and he advises that if you do find yourself hungover, Coconut Water will do the trick... and he says it in a Jamaican accent, so it must be true...

Anywho, it's a fantastic little interview ... I dearly love Jimmy Fallon's boyish charm, always ... and I just can't say enough wonderful things about Jimmy

Buffett! In my humble opinion, Jimmy Buffett represents the exact opposite of stress... As I've worked on this short piece this morning I've been listening to him and I'm so relaxed I could slide out of my chair...

One of the things I find most interesting about the work I do on statistics for the blogs is seeing what people are googling when they find one of my blogs or mom's...

Several folks out there have found the Ochorific Song o the Day by googling "we built this city radio announcer". That's a tidbit I didn't look into when posting

11/03/2010 - We Built this City - Jefferson Starship - 1985

The D.J. featured in We Built This City is Les Garland ... You know the name because of his role in developing our current music culture...

Garland was a co-founder of MTV and VH-1. He is also a founding member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...

Blender magazine ranked "We Built This City" as one of the "50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs Ever"... A little sad if you love the song, but if I'm not mistaken Blender magazine is now defunct - so let's not consider them an authority on anything...

Another interesting fact... Starship's producers Dennis Lambert and Peter Wolf
agreed to proceed with the project contingent on two items ... "more repetition of the chorus" and the addition of Les Garland in the bridge of the song...

An Ocho-rific On This Day - August 5th - And the World Would Never be the Same...

I almost came back in with Waylon Jennings today after hearing an interesting tidbit over the weekend, but I found a discrepancy when I went to research it online, so I'm holding off for a bit... I guess it's a good thing I didn't ... two country songs in a row and someone may have sent in the paramedics...

Anywho ... I found a fun "On This Day" I'll share with you ..

On this day in 1957 -
American Bandstand made its network debut on ABC-TV. The show was
hosted by Dick Clark.
Until this day the show had been a local show in Philadelphia since 1952.

I'd surely classify American Bandstand as one of the most monumentally important "things" in music history... When you think about the longevity of it, it's utterly shocking... ESPECIALLY the fact that one host was able to navigate the waters throughout the generations not only without every having to be "replaced", but while becoming an absolute beloved American icon in the process...

When I think of American Bandstand... I think of this clip....

But before you throw me out of the room ... I also think of this clip ...

Regardless of your generation American Bandstand showed teenagers how to "be teenagers"... from perfectly rolled bobby-sox to perfectly picked afros and bell-bottoms to just the right stirrup pant matched with excessively large bangs ... American Bandstand crossed the generations...

It was written on the spur of the moment in a meeting between Nelson and the producer of the movie Honeysuckle Rose. The producer asked Nelson to write a song for the movie. When Nelson asked the producer to clarify his request, the producer asked for a song about traveling. Nelson suggested something that started with the line "On the road again." When the IRS seized his possessions to sell at auction to try and collect money to pay his tax debt, many of Willie's fans bought his stuff and then gave it back to him. (It's been said that the fans did this as a way of saying thank you for all the free concerts Nelson performed in support of Farm Aid). The only major possessions not seized by the IRS was Willie's guitar and his tour bus so he could earn a living.

Willie's eco-friendly tour bus is called the "Honeysuckle Rose IV" and runs on a variety of biofuels. His company, Willie Nelson Biodiesel, markets biodiesel biofuel to truck stops.

He owns a selection of about 15 guitars, but the one he plays mostly on tour, is his Martin acoustic which he refers to as "Trigger," named after Roy Rogers's horse.

Wow ... my last post for the Ocho-rific Song o' the Day was Monday, June 6, 2011!!!

As always during these hiatuses I've wandered through my drafts at least 4,000,000 times trying to get my wick lit again and I just
couldn't seem to do it ... But my wick is relighting rather well on lots of things these days and though I STILL have a LOT of catching up and a LOT of crow to eat in some cases, I can see a light at the end of the tunnel brighter than I've been able to see in years...

This was the last post I wrote here - Monday, June 6, 2011 Watching the Wheels - 1980

The Ocho-rific Song o' the Day will be coming back soon in it's entirety but I'm going to take this opportunity to fill you in on a piece of what's been happening during this last hiatus which lasted a shocking 2 years and 1 month!!

I have a very varied line of income streams... One of which I loosely call "Web Work". My "Web Work" involves blogging, content creation, the monetization of blogs, etc...

In a recent conversation with my Mom, Kay regarding HER blog, I mentioned to her that I still get a pretty fair amount of traffic on the Ocho-rific Song o' the Day even though I haven't written in it in a long time and that she should think about a way to incorporate a music post into her blog...

She went back and refreshed herself on the format with the Ocho-rific Song o' the Day and one morning not too long ago, I woke to the first edition of "Thanks for the Memories - Songs from Yesteryear" In her first of this series she featured "Till Then" by the Mills Brothers.

I'll be sharing her music post here with you starting here today... and the Ocho-rific Song o' the Day will be back with daily posts before you know it ....

Watching the Wheels - 1980

Such a bitter-sweet song today, gang ...
One of my favorite Lennon songs ever ~ Talk about getting to the nucleus of ye' old noggin ... ;)

People do tend to think I'm crazy doing what I'm doing.
I've become used to it in my 36 and some odd years.

Why all of the projects? Why not just get a day job and punch a clock?

It takes me back to a conversation that I had with my dad in the back yard of my parents' house when I was staying there to get
settled after the *quarter life shift*... I won't drag you through it, but suffice it to say Daddy-o finds me to be very out of the box. What we came up with in our conversation that day was that we would have to agree to disagree on what we thought I should be doing with my life. My dad is a retired Union worker and while I appreciate how hard he worked to maintain that lifestyle of swing-shifts and long, hot hours; I have to side with my plan for my life. I think that I was *created* in a way that makes it nearly physically impossible to "work for someone" for a reason. Bizarre? A little ... but that's how I feel about it, so you'll just have to cope :)

And that kiddos is why this song so resonates with me.

Do people think you're crazy doing what you're doing?

I think you know what I think you should do about that...

Goodbye Stranger - Supertramp - 1979

Well, it looks like I'm finally developing a better formula for the posting of the Ocho-rific Song o the Day. It's 8:40 am as I write this and a while ago I posted the video for today on my FB profile with a little paragraph about why I had chosen the song.

I like that format, but what didn't work about it for me was that it's not in blog format - thus limiting my
space, not allowing me to create and embed images and graphics as I wish and not allowing me to monetize and get those little traffic pats on the head that I love so well :) So I'm going to be experimenting with the format in the coming week.

05.08.10 - A MESSAGE FROM SUPERTRAMP

In June of 2008 Rick Davies went to meet with Roger Hodgson to discuss the possibility of a reunion with him. After fifteen months of discussions, last fall Rick and Roger did not come to an agreement as was hoped. Roger decided to continue his solo career as he has since leaving Supertramp twenty-seven years ago.

After a bit of soul searching and much encouragement and support from Supertramp's longstanding promoters, Rick decided to put the band back on the road.

The "70-10 Tour" is a celebration of 40 years of Supertramp, which Rick started in 1970, but it is not a reunion with Roger Hodgson. We wish Roger well and look forward to playing for you this fall.

We sincerely hope this puts an end to the confusion that has been circulating on the internet and in the press.

The Onset of my December 1 Firing and One of the Greatest Vintage T.V. Theme Songs O' All Time

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday!

This little re-run project has really given me a chance to look at the importance of things such as titles! A title is a tough thing to come up with ... sometimes if it's a "popular and loved" song, I think the best thing to do would be to put
the actual song title and artist name in the title of the blog - but my statistics tell me differently ... with the highest read blogs in the Ocho-rific's history being those with mysterious titles. Good morning and Happy Monday!! I hope you've all made it in one piece through the round of storms that've been battering our neck o the woods for the last few days. If you don't already, I highly suggest that you follow Beau Dodson Weather on Facebook. He is passionate about the weather, which leads to very detailed coverage. He definitely gets my vote for FAVE weatherman!

I'm nearly certain that those of
you who read yesterday have been beyond anxious to find out what some of the most popular posts have been. So off we go ...

well, maybe they have - but for the sake o' the blog, they haven't...

I was sitting here having my java about a week after the last Ocho-rific Song o the Day (2/14/11) feeling so stressed out
because I hadn't posted in a week and my traffic was starting to wane. As badly as I wanted to take the time to write, I just didn't have the time or energy to do it. I continued on, getting whipped around and sucked under in the hurricane of "to-do"s.

About a week ago, after a long day of organizing and cleaning in my 500ish square foot apartment/art studio/office with the help of my wonderful Mom; I settled into a bubble bath of lavender and chamomile (nabbed from my great-nephew-to-be's shower basket) with a fabulous book loaned to me by a videographer friend...

...and as I read this book it really and truly occurred to me for about the ten thousandth time that we're all in charge of our own destiny. It occurred to me that I have control over every second of my day and only I can allow those moments to be dwindled away. It occurred to me that the way I do things doesn't have to work for other people...and that's a comforting thought.

So, what I've wanted for the last couple of months has been to write...
What I've gotten was overwhelming stress, emotional suffocation, headaches and tingling in the extremities... Did I need that? It's entirely possible that I did... because it's caused me to really start cracking down on my projects and realize that what I need to do is resume operating by MY priority list as opposed to the priority list of others... in all areas.

Therefore the Ocho-rific Song o the Day has returned.

I don't get "paid" (per se) for writing the Ocho-rific Song o the Day ... it's my little brainchild and outlet for my Love O' Music. Each post takes somewhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours to create ... depending on what kind of goodies I find while researching.
NOW, there ARE ways I can make money with the Ocho-rific Song o the Day and it doesn't involve the need for you to buy Amway or join a "jogging-suit and kool-aid" club. :) I earn money based on blog traffic. It's not an enormous amount ... but there are people making enormous amounts ... so your traffic helps. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" is a song by The Rolling Stones released on their 1969 album Let It Bleed. Written primarily by Mick Jagger with assistance from Keith Richards, it was named as the 100th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone (magazine) in its 2004 list of "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

"You Can't Always Get What You Want" was recorded on 16 and 17 November 1968 at London's Olympic Sound Studios. It features the London Bach Choir opening the song, highlighting throughout, and bringing it to its conclusion. Jimmy Miller, the Rolling Stones' producer at the time, plays drums on this song instead of Charlie Watts. Al Kooper plays piano and organ and also played the French horn intro, while Rocky Dijon plays congas and maracas. Nanette Workman sings backup vocals, but she is credited as "Nanette Newman".^{[citation needed]}

Of the song, Jagger said in 2003,^{[citation needed]} "'You Can't Always Get What You Want' was something I just played on the acoustic guitar - one of those bedroom songs. It proved to be quite difficult to record because Charlie couldn't play the groove and so Jimmy Miller had to play the drums. I'd also had this idea of having a choir, probably a gospel choir, on the track, but there wasn't one around at that point. Jack Nitzsche, or somebody, said that we could get the London Bach Choir and we said, 'That will be a laugh.'"^[1]

In his review of the song, Richie Unterberger says, "If you buy John Lennon's observation that the Rolling Stones were apt to copy the Beatles' innovations within a few months or so, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" is the Rolling Stones' counterpart to Hey Jude". Jagger said in 1969, "I liked the way the Beatles did that with 'Hey Jude'. The orchestra was not just to cover everything up - it was something extra. We may do something like that on the next album."^[2]

Though popular on modern classic rock radio stations, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was not released as a single, but rather as the B-Side to "Honky Tonk Women", albeit in an edited form (4:49) without the choral section. One of the Stones' most popular recordings, it has since appeared on the compilations Hot Rocks, Singles Collection, Forty Licks, Rolled Gold+: The Very Best of the Rolling Stones (2007 edition), Singles 1968-1971 (single version), and Slow Rollers.

There are 2 theories as to the identity of "Mr. Jimmy," who appears in the third verse.

It could be a reference to Jimmy Miller, who was The Stones' producer at the time, but it might also refer to Jimmy Hutmaker, a local character that wandered the business district in Excelsior, Minnesota, a trendy artist community outside Minneapolis near Lake Minnetonka. Hutmaker, who is known as "Mr. Jimmy," had some disabilities but seemed mentally sharp most days, although he would talk to himself a lot. He walked miles every day and was cared for by the local shop owners until his death on October 3, 2007.

The Stones performed in Excelsior on their first US tour in 1964, and were not well received. Mick Jagger went into a local drugstore to get a Cherry Coke. Back then a cherry coke was a coke with real cherries in it and drug store soda fountains were the place you usually found them. The store didn't have cherry cokes and Mr. Jimmy, standing in line behind Jagger, commented, "Well, you can't always get what you want." Mr. Jimmy was at the Stones next show in Minneapolis. Legend has it that Jagger sent a limo to pick him up, but it is more likely that a local businessman worked it out so he could go. The London Bach Choir tried to have their name removed from the album when they found out it was called Let It Bleed and contained "Midnight Rambler," a song about a serial killer.

The "Chelsea Drugstore" was in Chelsea; the King's Road, in fact, which "Swung" just as much as Carnaby Street in its day. But it wasn't a drug store (not officially anyway), it was a pub. Stanley Kubrick filmed part of A Clockwork Orange there. But the most devastating fact about the Chelsea Drugstore is that the place is now a McDonalds. (thanks, Kevin - london, England)

This was released as the B-side of "Honky Tonk Women." The version on this single is shorter than the one on the album. It was released July 3, 1969, the day after Brian Jones died.

Happy Valentine's Day and Whatnot friends.
I'm not a big fan of Valentine's Day.

I've been in a state of total inertia as far as getting the Mushtastic Month of February going on the Ocho-rific. I'm
mentally and emotionally worn out to be perfectly honest with you ... all 200 or so of you :) You've felt that way though.. every single one of you understand..so why not tell the truth :)

Anyhoo - so today is Valentine's day. I bought one Valentine's gift as it just landed in front of me yesterday afternoon while picking up some art supplies at Michael's.

I was waiting in a rather lengthy line and couldn't help but notice the gargantuan explosion of red and pink and everything LOVE right beside me. Bleich - I prefer to get stuck in line near things like books... As I perused it from afar, but not really far enough :) .. I couldn't help but notice one single package of "Lovetastic Valentine's Day Pancake Mix" ... or whatever ridiculous thing they had named it...

NOW, for that to be even remotely entertaining to you; you would have to know that I have a friend who's been dreading V-Day and she keeps saying she's looking forward to Pancake Day. I can't quite recall when Pancake Day is, though she has told me and everyone else on her FB on multiple occasions... but it's coming up.

ANYHOO - I decided I absolutely must grab this pancake mix for her.

NOW then ((and we're almost to the Song o the Day)) .. she works in the office building that I clean on Sundays - so I had the opportunity to leave the Valentine Pancake Mix on her desk.

I started to leave a note and say "Thank you for being a friend". But then I thought how funny it would be if she just found the pancake mix ... knowing that she'd blabbed about it all over FB and hopefully give her a hysterical moment of "Oh my God (!!) someone's stalking me and they've left me pancake mix!!!" So I just left it there and we'll see what happens. I'll keep you posted...

Let me go on record as saying this is beyond a shadow of a doubt one of my all-time-favorite upbeat hits! Let me also go on record as saying if you even remotely enjoy REO and have an opportunity to see them, don't miss it! Kevin Cronin puts any 30 year old to shame, he is absolutely bounding with energy~REO is absolutely in my Top 5 Fave bands and I don't did a rat's shiny patute what year it is :)

REO Speedwagon took its name from the REO Speed Wagon, a flatbed truck and fire engine, manufactured by the REO Motor Car Company. ("R.E.O." are initials of the company's founder, Ransom Eli Olds, who also founded Oldsmobile, once a division of General Motors.)

***REO Speedwagon was formed by students attending the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois, in the fall of 1967 to play cover songs in campus bars.

The first line up consisted of Alan Gratzer on drums and vocals, Neal Doughty on keyboards, Joe Matt on guitar and vocals, and Mike Blair on bass and vocals. In the spring of 1968, Terry Luttrell became lead singer, and Bob Crownover and Gregg Philbin replaced Matt and Blair. Joe McCabe played sax at this time until moving to Southern Illinois University. Crownover played guitar for the group until the summer of 1969 when Bill Fiorioreplaced him. Fiorio then departed in late 1969, eventually assuming the name Duke Tumatoe, and went on to form the All Star Frogs. Another guitarist, Steve Scorfina, came aboard briefly, and was replaced by Gary Richrath in late 1970.

Richrath was a Peoria, Illinois-based guitar player and prolific songwriter who brought original material to the band including REO's signature song "Ridin' the Storm Out". With Richrath on board, the regional popularity of the band grew tremendously. The Midwestern United States was the original REO Speedwagon fan stronghold and is pivotal in this period of the band's history.

The band signed to Epic Records in 1971. Paul Leka, an East Coast record producer, brought the band to his recording studio in Bridgeport,Connecticut where it recorded original material for its first album. The lineup on the first album consisted of Richrath, Gratzer, Doughty, Philbin, and Luttrell.

Starting out with their equipment being hauled to dates in a friend's used station wagon, REO played bars all over the Midwest. The band's debut album, REO Speedwagon, was released on Epic Records in 1971. The most popular track on this record was "157 Riverside Avenue". The title refers to the Westport, Connecticut, address where the band stayed while recording in Leka's studio in nearby Bridgeport, and remains an in-concert favorite.

Although the rest of the band's line-up remained stable, REO Speedwagon switched lead vocalists three times for their first three albums. Luttrell left the band in early 1972, eventually becoming the vocalist for Starcastle. He was replaced by Kevin Cronin. Cronin recorded one album with the band, 1972's R.E.O./T.W.O., but left the band during the recording sessions for 1973's Ridin' The Storm Out because of ego conflicts ^[4]. Ridin' the Storm Out was completed with Michael Bryan Murphy on lead vocal. Murphy stayed on for two more albums, Lost in a Dream and This Time We Mean It, before Cronin returned to the fold in January 1976 and recorded R.E.O., which was released that same year. Cronin's return came after Greg X. Volz turned down the position for lead vocals due to his conversion to Christianity.

REO Speedwagon's first live album, Live: You Get What You Play For (1977), was certified platinum. In 1977, Philbin was replaced with Bruce Hall to record You Can Tune a Piano but You Can't Tuna Fish, released in 1978 which received FM radio airplay. The album was REO's first to make the Top 40, peaking at #29. The album sold over 2 million copies in the U.S. which led it to go 2x Platinum. In 1979, the band took a turn back to hard rock with the release of Nine Lives.

The lineup was now set for the band's most popular era. In the fall of 1980, REO Speedwagon released Hi Infidelity, which represented a change in the music from hard rock to more pop-oriented material.^[5] Hi Infidelity spawned four hit singles written by Richrath and Cronin, including the #1 "Keep On Loving You", the #5 "Take It on the Run", "In Your Letter" (#20), and "Don't Let Him Go" (#24), and remained on the charts for 65 weeks, 32 of which were spent in the top ten, including 15 weeks atop the Billboard 200.

Good Trouble (1982) and Wheels Are Turnin' (1984) were follow-up albums which also did well commercially, the former containing the hit singles "Keep the Fire Burnin'" (U.S. #7) and "Sweet Time" (U.S. #26) and the latter containing the #1 hit single "Can't Fight This Feeling" plus three more hits: "I Do' Wanna Know" (U.S. #29), "One Lonely Night" (U.S. #19) and "Live Every Moment" (U.S. #34).

On July 13, 1985, the band made a stop in Philadelphia (en route to a show in Milwaukee) to play at the US Leg of Live Aid. They performed "Can't Fight this Feeling" and "Roll With The Changes", which featured members of the Beach Boys, the REO Speedwagon band members families, and Paul Shaffer on stage for backing vocals. 1987's Life as We Know It saw a decline in sales, but still managed to provide the band with the hits "That Ain't Love" (U.S. #16) and "In My Dreams" (U.S. #19).^[6]

By the end of the 1980s, the band's popularity was waning.^[5] In September 1988, Gratzer retired and in early 1989, Richrath was asked to leave over disagreements with Cronin regarding musical direction. Cronin had been playing in a jazz ensemble called "The Strolling Dudes" with jazz horn player Rick Braun, Miles Joseph on lead guitar and Graham Lear on drums. Lear was invited to join REO to replace Gratzer and Joseph was brought in as a temporary guitarist. Back up singers Carla Day and Melanie Jackson were also added in 1989 to boost the group's vocal sound onstage. This lineup did only one show—in Viña del Mar, Chile—winning the award for best group at the city's annual International Song Festival. After that, Miles Joseph and the back up singers were dropped in favor of former Ted Nugent guitarist Dave Amato and songwriter/producer/keyboardist Jesse Harms (Eddie Money, Sammy Hagar).

From 1995 to the present, the label released over a dozen compilation albums featuring greatest hits, including 1999's The Ballads. In 2000, REO teamed up with Styx for an appearance at Riverport Amphitheater in St. Louis, which was released as a live concert video Arch Allies: Live at Riverport. The REO portion of the show was released again under three separate titles: Live - Plus (2001), Live Plus 3 (2001) and Extended Versions (2001)(which was certified Gold by the RIAA on 4/26/2006). REO once again teamed with Styx in 2003 for the Classic Rock's Main Event tour which also includedJourney. In 2008 they teamed with Styx and Def Leppard for another major tour headlined by Def Leppard to promote its latest album.

REO Speedwagon continues to tour regularly, performing mostly their classic hits.^[7] They are popular on the fair and casino circuits, but still team with other acts to play large venues. They teamed up with Styx to record a new single entitled "Can't Stop Rockin'", released in March 2009, as well as for a full tour that includes special guest .38 Special.^[8]

"Wind of Change" is a 1990 power ballad written by Klaus Meine, vocalist of the German rock band Scorpions. It appeared on their 1990 album Crazy World, but did not become a worldwide hit single until 1991, when it topped the charts in Germany and across Europe, and hit #4 in the United States and #2 in the United Kingdom. The band also recorded a Russian-language version of the song, under the title Ветер Перемен (Veter Peremen) and a Spanish version called Vientos de Cambio.

The song is currently the 10th best-selling single of all time in Germany.^[1]

Worldwide, this single sold over 6 million copies, making it one of the top fifty best selling singles of all time. The Scorpions hold the record for the best-selling single by a German artist and band.^[2]

The lyrics celebrate the political changes in Eastern Europe at that time – such as the Polish Round Table Agreement and fall of the Berlin Wall, the increasing freedom in the communist bloc (which soon led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union), and the clearly imminent end of the Cold War.

The Scorpions were inspired to write the song on a visit to Moscow in 1989, and the opening lines refer to the city's landmarks:

and happy Saturday friends!

I've been sitting here at my kitchen table, which doubles as my office (and my art studio) since about 5 this morning working on new blogs.

I'd had a plan to do a big Mushtastic
Month of February - I have a lot of songs chosen and some great stuff "half way done". I still intend to run that stuff, but it will likely kick off ON Valentine's Day as opposed to the 1st of February as I had planned.

Those of you who know me in real life are not at all surprised by this and are wondering who on earth I could POSSIBLY be explaining my tardiness to...

I'll bet y'all think reminiscing about Wolfman Jack depressed the living daylights out of me ... causing me to go under ground for way too long ... that wasn't the case though .... As many of you know, I've been living in the world of self-employment since December 1 of 2010 ... and this month proved to be tight - leaving me with neither the time or emotional energy to post an Ocho-rific Song o the Day or much of anything else for that matter.

Anyhoo - I digress ... the Ocho-rific Song o the Day will be back on Monday with "Songs About Change".

Good morning and Happy Friday!!

I've got quite a time warp for you kids this morning...

If you follow my facebook, you may have seen a pre-scheduled post this morning wishing Wolfman Jack a happy birthday. Wolfman Jack did pass away in 1995 - however today would have been his 73rd birthday.

When Wolfman Jack was in his hay-day I was terrified of him. I thought he really WAS possibly from some strain of wolf-person and my older brothers did nothing at all to clear up my misunderstanding... therefore my fear of Wolfman Jack continued
until I was old enough to know better.

Wolfman Jack was a true personality - and we don't often see those anymore.

Let me fill you in with some facts below from the WIKI and IMDB, as well as a few videos that I highly recommend.

Robert Weston Smith, known commonly as Wolfman Jack (January 21, 1938 – July 1, 1995) was a gravelly-voiced, American disc jockey who became world famous in the 1960s and 1970s.

Career began on KCIJ-AM, a daytime station in Shreveport, Louisiana. (IMDB)

He was a fan of disc jockey Alan Freed who helped to turn African-American rhythm and blues into Caucasian rock and roll music. Freed originally called himself the Moondog after New York City street musician Moondog. Freed both adopted this name and used a recorded howl to give his early broadcasts a unique character. The Wolfman's adaptation of the Moondog theme was to call himself Wolfman Jack and add his own sound effects. The character was based in part on the manner and style of bluesman Howling Wolf. He kept the name Wolfman Jack and attempted to mask his true identity to create public interest in his radio character. (IMDB)

Wolfman Jack worked as a disc jockey from 1958 to 1966 for the (then) 250,000 watt radio station XERF (1570 AM) in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico, just across the river from Del Rio, Texas, USA. Believe it or not, this week - almost 16 years after it's departure from the airwaves - "The Jeffersons" has come up in conversation on multiple occasions ... and today is the 36 year anniversary of The Jeffersons' premier on CBS.

The Jeffersons is an American sitcom that was broadcast on CBS from January 18, 1975, through June 25, 1985, lasting 11 seasons and a total of 253 episodes. The show was produced by the T.A.T. Communications Companyfrom 1975–1982 and byEmbassy Television from 1982-1985. Ja'net Dubois (from Good Times) and Jeff Barry co-wrote The Jeffersons's theme song, "Movin' on Up", which was sung by Dubois with a gospel choir.

"Movin' on Up" found new life in the 1990s and 2000s in a number of television commercials and other references: for example, in Nelly's song "Batter Up" (which featured Hemsley as a baseball stadium public address announcer) and in Will Smith's song "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" (Now they give it to me nice and easy/Since I moved up like George and Weezie).

The song was also used in the 2006 film Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties. This time, the song was sung by Bill Murray who voices Garfield who joyfully sings about his new life in the palace. This version has different lyrics relating to Garfield's new life. The song is also referenced in the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder.

"Muhammad Ali" is a song recorded by British dance band Faithless. It was released in the UK as a single on 23 September 2001, and was the second single release from the group's third studio album Outrospective. The German release was a DualDisc containing a CD audio side and a DVD side. Muhammad Ali reached #29 in the UK singles chart.

As I perused for today's topic, I learned the following -

On This Day in 1970 -

Max Yasgur was sued for $35,000 in property damages by neighboring farmers. It was Yasgur's on which the August 1969 Woodstock Festival was held.

The movie, "Woodstock: Three Days of Peace, Love & Music", was released in 1970 as the first documentary chronicling the biggest music festival of its time.

By August 15, 1969, hundreds of thousands of people had flocked to upstate New York to attend Woodstock, the epic 3-day music festival that was said to be the capstone of a cultural movement. The world had never seen anything like it. Sam Yasgur convinced his father Max to allow the event to be held on their 600 acre farm in Bethel, New York. Most attendees didn't buy tickets, so the promoters didn't make any money until the movie and record were released. The biggest and best bands of the era played day and night to the lucky folks who made history just by being there. 20-mile traffic jams, heavy rain, mud, and insufficient food and accommodations did nothing to mar the collective, peace-loving spirit of the happening. It boasted scorching, legendary performances, like The Who's reflective "See Me, Feel Me" as the sun rose, Janis Joplin belting out "Piece of my Heart" to a crowd of half a million, and Jimi Hendrix's incendiary, distorted version of "The Star Spangled Banner" to a relatively empty field on the very last day of Woodstock. The world still hasn't fully recovered, and probably never will.

I learned the following there about Max::

*He offered the town five acres of his farm for $1 to build a park, but the town wasn't interested in something that would bring 'more hippies.'

*He sold his famous farm in 1971 and retired to Florida but died just two years later.

*He fought with county elders, received personal threats, and a sign reading 'Don't Buy Yasgur's Milk. He Loves The Hippies' was erected.

*Seeing this as not just an attack of him but young people in general, he stated at a town meeting, 'Well, you can all go pound salt up your ass, because come August 15, we're going to have a festival!'

*He was anti-drug although told promoters he knew there would be drugs, but he had no objection to nudity and sex on his farm.

*Some drug users wrote to him after the fest to tell him they became clean after learning of his anti-drug stance, to which he commented 'to me this means everything.'

Happy Thursday gang! I'm posting this in 'real time' before I take off for the day and running a little behind this morning to boot. Anywho, I do want to "preface" this blog =)

I'm not really a fan of Led Zeppelin. I never have been.
As faaaar back as I can remember Led Zeppelin was never on my radar. When I began really digging into all of the quirky little stories and such of music that entertain me so, I couldn't ignore the roots and branches of Led Zeppelin.

Anywho -- Off we go...

On this day in 1975 -

The tour of 1975 was problematic to say the least! Aside from the riot at Boston Garden, they hadn't played together in almost two years, Page broke a finger and Plant caught the flu...

This tour took place almost two years since the band had completed their most recent concert tour, which was the longest break between concerts yet taken by the band. As a result, some critics have suggested that the band seemed sluggish and rusty upon their return to the stage, with the group lacking dynamics and giving rather 'heavy' performances.^[1]

To make matters worse, guitarist Jimmy Page suffered a broken ring finger after slamming its tip in a train door prior to leaving England for this tour. This forced him to take pain killers and to develop a three finger playing technique during the first portion of the tour.^[2]In addition, Robert Plant contracted a bad case of influenza early in the tour, causing the cancellation of one show and negatively affecting his singing ability for much of the rest of the tour, leading to some unfavourable reviews.^[3] However, toward the end of the tour it was noted that group seemed to be recovering, leading to some memorable performances.^[1]^[4]

Indeed, by the end of this series of dates, Plant himself stated that:

This has been our most successful tour on every level and I had a great time all the way through.^[2]

The lowdown from History.com on the riot at Boston Garden is as follows::

On January 6, 1975, a crowd of 2,000-plus lines up outside Boston Garden to buy tickets to the rock band Led Zeppelin. Some in the crowd then broke in to the near-empty arena, and caused thousands of dollars in damage.

"For years and years, we had people line up overnight to wait for tickets," recalls Steven Rosenblatt, the ticket-office manager at Boston Garden on that January night, "but we never had anything like this." Someone pried open the Garden's locked doors around midnight, and soon hundreds of beer-drinking, bottle-throwing Led Zeppelin fans had the run of Boston Garden. "You couldn't have this kind of crowd running around un-tethered inside the building," says Rosenblatt, "so we decided to open the ticket windows." The near-riot was calmed by around 2:30 a.m., when the Garden staff began selling tickets hours ahead of schedule. By 6:00 a.m., all 9,000 seats were sold out and the crowd had dispersed, but not before causing upwards of $50,000 to the Garden and infuriating the Boston's mayor, Kevin H. White.

No one could accuse Mayor White of failing to understand the power of rock and roll. Back in 1972, he had personally intervened to free the Rolling Stones from a Warwick, Rhode Island, jail rather than risk a riot by angry Stones fans if a scheduled concert in Boston that night were cancelled. White came down hard on the Led Zeppelin rioters. Not only did he cancel the concert scheduled for February 4, but he also announced that the band would not be allowed to perform in Boston for the next five years. In fact, Led Zeppelin would never perform there again. Banned in Beantown, the group moved on to the next stop on their 1975 North American tour and bypassed Boston on their next one in 1977. That tour would be Led Zeppelin's last in the United States, as the group disbanded following the death of drummer John Bonham on September 25, 1980.

During this tour Led Zeppelin hired The Starship - a former United Airlines Boeing 720B passenger jet, to transport them between cities. This was the second and final time the band used this plane, having initially done so on their previous tour of North America in 1973.

Gerald "Gerry" Rafferty (16 April 1947 – 4 January 2011) was a Scottish singer and songwriter best known for his solo hits "Baker Street" and "Right Down the Line", and "Stuck in the Middle" with the band Stealers Wheel.

Rafferty was born on
16 April 1947 into a working-class family at Paisley. He was the unwanted third son of Mary Skeffington and Joseph Rafferty (died 1963).^[1] Rafferty grew up in a council house on the town’s Glenburn estate and was educated atSt Mirin's Academy. His Irish-born father, an abusive alcoholic, was a miner and lorry driver who died when Rafferty was 16. Inspired by his Scottish mother who had taught him Irish and Scottish folk songs as a boy, and heavily influenced by the music of The Beatles and Bob Dylan, the young Rafferty started to write his own material.^[2]

In 1963, Rafferty left St Mirin's Academy and worked in a butcher's shop and, later, as a civil service clerk. At weekends, he and a schoolfriend, Joe Egan, played in a local group, Maverix. In the mid-1960s, Rafferty earned money for a time busking on the London Underground. In 1966, Rafferty was a member of the band The Fifth Column along with future Stealers Wheel collaborator Joe Egan. The group unsuccessfully released the single, "Benjamin Day"/"There's Nobody Here" (Columbia 8068).

In 1972, Rafferty and Joe Egan formedStealers Wheel, a group which was beset by legal wranglings, but did have a huge hit "Stuck in the Middle" (which 20 years later was used prominently in the 1992 movie Reservoir Dogs) and the lesser top 40 hit "Star" ten months later. The duo disbanded in 1975.^{[citation needed]}

Legal issues after the breakup of Stealers Wheel meant that, for three years, Rafferty was unable to release any material.^{[citation needed]} After the disputes were resolved in 1978, he recorded his second solo album, City to City, which included the song with which he remains most identified, "Baker Street". The single reached No. 3 in the UK and No. 2 in the U.S. ^[3] The album sold over 5.5 million copies, toppling the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in the U.S. on 8 July 1978. {{cn]] "Baker Street" featured a very distinctive saxophone solo by Raphael Ravenscroft which remains a mainstay of soft-rock radio airplay. ^[4] In October 2010 the song was recognised by the BMI for surpassing 5 million plays worldwide. "Stuck in the Middle With You" has received over 4 million plays worldwide, and "Right Down The Line" has had over 3 million plays ^[5]

In November 2010, Rafferty was admitted to a hospital in Bournemouth, Dorset, suffering from liver failure. He died at home on 4 January 2011, of liver disease.^[15] He is survived by his daughter, Martha.^[16]

"The Sound of Silence" is the song that propelled the 1960s folk music duo Simon and Garfunkel to popularity. It was written in February 1964 by Paul Simon in the aftermath of the November 22, 1963 assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.^[1] After being later re-mixed with electric instruments, this commercial version has been called the "quintessential folk rock release".^[2] In the U.S., it was the duo's second most popular hit after Bridge Over Troubled Water.

The song features Simon on acoustic guitar and both Simon and Garfunkel singing. It was originally recorded as an acoustic piece for their first album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. in 1964 but on the initiative of the record company's producer, Tom Wilson, it was later overdubbed with electric instruments and rereleased as a single in September 1965.^[3]^[4] The single reached number one on New Year's Day 1966 and was included in the 1966 album Sounds of Silence.

The song was originally called "The Sounds of Silence" and is titled that way on the early albums in which it appeared and on the single. In later compilations it was retitled "The Sound of Silence". Both the singular and the plural form of the word appear in the lyrics. In his book Lyrics 1964–2008 Simon has the title in the singular.

Simon began working on the song sometime after the Kennedy assassination. He had made progress on the music but had yet to get down the lyrics. On 19 February 1964 the lyrics apparently coalesced, as Simon recalled:

“

The main thing about playing the guitar, though, was that I was able to sit by myself and play and dream. And I was always happy doing that. I used to go off in the bathroom, because the bathroom had tiles, so it was a slight echo chamber. I'd turn on the faucet so that water would run — I like that sound, it's very soothing to me — and I'd play. In the dark. 'Hello darkness, my old friend / I've come to talk with you again'.^[5]

”

Simon showed the new composition to Garfunkel the same day, and shortly afterward, the duo began to perform it at folk clubs in New York. In the liner notes of their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., Garfunkel claims:

“

'The Sound of Silence' is a major work. We were looking for a song on a larger scale, but this is more than either of us expected.^[6]

”

The duo recorded it for the first time on March 10, and included the track on Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., which was released that October.^[7] The album flopped upon its release, and the duo split up, with Simon going to England for much of 1965. There he often performed the song solo in folk clubs, and recorded it for a second time on his solo LP in May 1965, The Paul Simon Songbook.

In the meantime, Simon and Garfunkel's producer at Columbia Records in New York, Tom Wilson, had learned that the song had begun to receive airplay on radio stations inBoston, Massachusetts and around Gainesville and Cocoa Beach, Florida.

On June 15, 1965, immediately after the recording session of Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone," Wilson took the original acoustically instrumented track of Simon & Garfunkel's 1964 version, and overdubbed the recording with electric guitar (played by Al Gorgoni), electric bass (Bob Bushnell), and drums (Bobby Gregg), and released it as a single without consulting Simon or Garfunkel. The lack of consultation with Simon and Garfunkel on Wilson's re-mix was because, although still contracted to Columbia Records at the time, the musical duo at that time was no longer a "working entity".^[3]^[8]^[9] Roy Halee was the recording engineer, who in spirit with the success of The Byrdsand their success formula in folk rock, introduced an echo chamber effect into the song.^[3] Al Gorgoni later would reflect that this echo effect worked well on the finished recording, but would dislike the electric guitar work they technically superimposed on the original acoustic piece.^[3]

For the B-Side, Wilson used an unreleased track he cut with the duo a few months earlier on which they had tried out a more "contemporary" sound. The record single "Sounds of Silence"/"We've Got a Groovey Thing Going" entered the U.S. pop charts in September 1965 and slowly began its ascent. In the first issue of Crawdaddy!magazine, January 30, 1966, Paul Williams, in reviewing the later album, wrote that he liked this B-side song which he found pure "rock and roll", "catchy", with a "fascinating beat and melody" and great harmony.^[10]

Simon learned that it had entered the charts minutes before he went on stage to perform at a club in Copenhagen, Denmark, and in the later fall of 1965 he returned to theUnited States. By the end of 1965 and the first few weeks of 1966, the song reached number one on the U.S. charts. Simon and Garfunkel then reunited as a musical act, and included the song as the title track of their next album, Sounds of Silence, hastily recorded in December 1965 and released in January 1966 to capitalize on their success. The song propelled them to stardom and, together with two other top-five (in the U.S.) hits in the summer of 1966, "I Am a Rock" and "Homeward Bound," ensured the duo's fame. In 1999, BMI named "The Sound of Silence" as the 18th-most performed song of the 20th century.^[11] In 2004 it was ranked #156 on Rolling Stone's list of the500 Greatest Songs of All Time, one of the duo's three songs on the list.

The original acoustic stereo mix of the song had the duo's vocals on separate channels, spotlighting the delicate harmonies. When the 'rock' version was mixed to stereo, Wilson mixed the vocals in the middle, which is not as clear sounding as the original acoustic version.

On the duo's 1968 album Bookends, the track "Save the Life of My Child" features a distorted sample of Art Garfunkel's "Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you" line from the original recording of "The Sound Of Silence"). At 2:16 in the song somebody says "echo me"

In 2009, the song was released (along with "I Am a Rock") as a downloadable track for the rhythm video game Rock Band 2

Shaw Blades covered both The Sound of Silence and I Am a Rock on their 2007 album Influence.

Simon & Garfunkel performed this at Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit in 1993 with Eddie Van Halen backing them on guitar.

Despite its great popularity, Blender magazine voted this the 42nd worst song ever, remarking sardonically that "If Frasier Crane were a song, he would sound like this." The magazine's editor, Craig Marks, defended Blender's decision to include this much-loved song on their list, stating: "It's the freshman-poetry meaningfulness that got our goat, with self-important lyrics like 'hear my words that I might teach you', it's almost a parody of pretentious '60s folk-rock." The brief article on the song corresponding with this called the "hear my words" line "the most self-important... in rock history," and elaborated on Mark's remarks with: "Simon and Garfunkel thunder away in voices that suggest they're scowling and wagging their fingers as they sing. The overall experience is like being lectured on the meaning of life by a jumped-up freshman."

The first recording was an acoustic version on Simon & Garfunkel's first album, Wednesday Morning, 3 AM, which sold about 2000 copies. When the album tanked, Simon and Garfunkel split up. What they didn't know was that their record company had a plan. Trying to take advantage of the folk-rock movement, Columbia Records had a producer named Bob Johnston add electric instruments to the acoustic track. Simon and Garfunkel had no idea their acoustic song had been overdubbed with electric instruments, but it became a huge hit and got them back together. If Wilson had not reworked the song without their knowledge, Simon and Garfunkel probably would have gone their separate ways.
