A W.E. A.L.L. B.E News Special Report
9/9/2019

Maestro Phil Joyner with Bro. Ron Celebrating His 60th & Last Living Life Affirmation Day, June 2, 2019.

It's So Hard To Say Goodbye Mane...Rest In Perfect Pitch Maestro Phil!!!

It Took Me A Week To Compose My Thoughts…I AM Still Processing The Loss…#BlackAugust 28, 2019, Gabriel Blew His Horn & Called You Home…Bro.#PhilJoynerJr Was A Real One…He Was A Man Not Of Wasted Words & Useless Thoughts, But One Of Necessary Thoughtful Actions…Bro. Phil Came From A Family Full Of Brilliant & Gifted Musicians…For Example, His Uncle Was #JamilNasser The Great Jazz Bassist Who Played, Recorded Songs/Albums & Traveled The World With Music Giants Such As #BBKing, #LesterYoung,#SonnyRollins, #AhmadJamal, #PhineasNewborn, #GeorgeColeman, #IdreesSulieman Just To Name A Few…

Bro. Phil In His Own Special Way Was A Great Representative Of The Luncefordean Tradition Which Was Started By Jazz Legend Jimmie Lunceford Who Is Credited As Being The 1st High School Band Director Among The Memphis City & Shelby County Schools For Black Children…Lunceford Was Also Credited With Being The 1st Person In The World To Teach Jazz Studies In A Formal Educational Setting Which He Did At #ManassasHighSchool Back In The 1920s…I AM Now Starting To Realize How Phil Joyner, Jr. & #JimmieLunceford Were Eerily Similar…Both Men Were Geminis, Phil Was Born June 2, 1959 While Jimmie Was Born June 6, 1902…Both Men Were Gifted Natural Athletes Who Excelled @ Football & Track…Both Men Were Familiar With The Spanish Language, Lunceford Taught It While Bro. Phil Spoke It Fluently…Both Men Were Music Prodigies Who Could Play Just About Any Musical Instrument That They Put Their Hands On…Both Men Were Highly Influential & Effective Music Educators Who Use The Healing & Redemptive Powers Of Music To Instill Discipline, Confidence & Love Of Community & Self Into Young People…Also Phil & Jimmie Loved Flying & Were Both Licensed Airplane Pilots…Both Died In Their Prime With A Lot More Music Left To Share, Jimmie @ 45 & Phil @ 60…

With That Said It Was A NO Brainer To Honor Bro. Phil As The 2019 Jimmie Lunceford Jamboree Festival Homecoming Court Prince…He Confirmed His Interest In Being Honored With My Mom SISTAR Callie Herd Back In May…We Were Truly Looking Forward To Working With Bro. Phil On This Project Being This Is Also The 200th Anniversary Year Of Memphis’ Founding…There Are More Recorded Songs About Memphis Than Any City In America Mane...Bro. Phil Had Been Involved With The Jimmie Lunceford Jamboree Festival Movement In Some Capacity Since 2017…Whether It Was Playing A Couple Of Songs On The Piano Where At Times He Sounded Like #NatKingCole, #OscarPeterson or Even #FatsWaller (He Played Piano In The Lobby @ The World Famous #PeabodyHotel In Downtown Memphis For 35 Yrs), Directing The Overton High Jazz Orchestra To The Heights Of Musical Excellence That Would Have Made Lunceford Proud @ Manassas High Where At The Time The Music Program Was Non-Existent Or Participating In A Panel Discussion About The Rich Heritage & Legacy Of Memphis Music @ The Ben Hooks Main Library On A Slow Weeknight, Bro. Phil Not Only Answered The Call, But He Came Through With Flying Colors & Set A Standard Which One Could Only Hope To Match If Not Surpass…A True Renaissance Man I AM Just Now Realizing How The Trumpet Was His First Love Musically…He Had A BE-YOU-TOO-FULL Technique That Was Reminiscent Of #BookerLittle, #CliffordBrown & #LeeMorgan With A Tone As Brilliant, Warm & Welcoming As The Man Himself…#SOMEWHERE!!!

Many ThANKHs & AMPLIFIED BLESSINGS To Bro. Phil’s BE-YOU-TOO-FULL Wife & Soulmate SiSTAR #JoanneJoyner For Such A Lovely Homegoing Celebration & For Sharing Her Powerful Testimony & Sonically Anointed & Ah-Mazin Singing Voice With Us…She Was Bro. Phil's Ride-Or-Die Co-Pilot On His Unique Journey For 39 Yrs...Like Any Adventuresome Trip, I AM Sure That There Was Turbulence Every Now And Then, But They Stayed The Course & Kept The Faith...#BlackLove is Still Real...I Was Truly ELATED When She Accepted Her Husband’s #2019JimmieLuncefordLegacyAward On His Behalf…Their 5 BE-YOU-TOO-FULL & Musically Endowed Children Were Also Pleased With The Well Deserved & Earned Honor Bestowed Upon Their Father...

Bro. Phil Was Very Generous Of His Praise Of My Abilities As A Historian & My Knowledge Of Jazz History, In Particular The Memphis Contribution…When I Would Come Through The Peabody With An Associate/Out-Of-Town Guest Or To A Concert Featuring The Overton High Jazz Orchestra He Would Often Sing My Praises To Anyone Who Would Listen…His Endorsement Gave Me Credibility With His Fellow Musicians & Educators…One Regret I Have is That I Did Not Pick His Brain About The Numerous Conversations/Encounters He Had With The Misunderstood Music Icon & Legend #IkeTurner Who Was A Frequent Visitor Of The Peabody Back In The 90s & Early 2000s As Well As A Fan Of Bro. Phil’s Piano Playing…Ike Would Often Bend His Ear Concerning Life & Other Topics…I Would Have Loved To Have Been A Fly On The Wall For Those Conversations Mane…Bro. Phil Told His Wife That He Wanted To Create A Museum Featuring Memphis Music History & Name Me As The Resident Historian…It Was A True Honor To Have Attended His 60th & Last Happy Life Affirmation Day Party On Sunday June 2…I AM Also Happy That I Convinced Myself To Take One Last Pic With Him…He Was Truly In The Words Of #DukeEllington “#BeyondCategory!!!”

This Year’s Jimmie Lunceford Jamboree Festival Will Take Place October 20-26, 2019...The Festivities For The Most Part Will Be Free, Family Friendly & Open To The Public...This Year Will Be A Truly Grassroots Affair Where We Will Lean Heavily On Community Engagement & Support For Success…In Addition To Bro. Phil We Will Also Be Honoring Unsung Memphis Music Legends & Greats #CarlaThomas, Deborah Gleese Barnes, #SidneyKirk, #LilHardinArmstrong & #JohnnyAce…The Week Will Be Dedicated To The Enduring Legacy & Memory Of Bro. Phil Joyner, Jr….WE 💓 YOU MADLY MAESTRO PHIL!!! Always And Forever Mane!!! #R2c2h2Says #TheMarathonContinues”

2019 Wreath Laying Ceremony & Jam Session In Honor Of Jimmie Lunceford's 117th Life Affirmation Day (Birthday)

"Jimmy Lunceford was buried here in Memphis. The spot he occupies should have something of a special significance...He took a group of relatively unsophisticated Memphis colored boys and welded them into an organization which scaled the heights of musical eminence...He presented something new in the way of musical presentations by Negro orchestras. Lunceford and many others like him chose to remain at home, and with their people. [His death] should have meaning in inspiration and guidance to others. If we permit it, Lunceford's burial in Memphis can mean this."

"He would come over to the school each and every time he would play Memphis. His band would perform for the [Manassas] student body, and our band, the Little Rhythm Bombers, would play for him. This is where most of us, as students, saw him. He would bring the big band over to Manassas and perform."

The 2nd Annual Jimmie Lunceford Jamboree Festival Week organized by The W.E. A.L.L. B.E. Group, Inc. will be held from October 21, 2018 through October 28, 2018 in Memphis, TN. Ronald Herd II aka Bro. Ron aka R2C2H2 Tha Artivist, the founder and 'Chief Executive Artivist' of The W.E. A.L.L. B.E. Group Inc., answered his calling after a spiritual encounter with Sun Ra while viewing the documentary 'Space Is The Place' courtesy of the late Prof. Giuseppe Pirone during his freshman year (1998) at Washington University in St. Louis. This epiphany led him to learning more about jazz and its greatest artists including but not limited to Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Jimmie Lunceford, Dinah Washington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and James Reese Europe. He never would have imagined while doing years of research that he would discover that his late paternal grandmother, who grew up with Charlie Parker as a friend and business associate of her brothers, actually performed with the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra when they visited Kansas City. This research also connected him to the late great Mr. Emerson Able, Jr., a Memphis music legend and co-founder of The Southern Heritage Classic. Mr. Able was a true Jimmie Lunceford disciple as well as a tireless and longtime advocate for Lunceford to be properly recognized in 'The City Of Good Abode' which helped him to form the foundation for 'The Greatest Jazz Swing Band Of All Time!!!' Bro. Ron and Mr. Able eventually became 'partners in crime' as they vowed to bring Lunceford's legacy to life. Bro. Ron is working on a documentary and book in honor of Jimmie Lunceford. You can support those important efforts by donating to the following link:
http://www.Gofundme.com/JimmieLunceford

It has been 71 years since Lunceford's death and 116 years since he was born, the mission to restore his rightful place among the pantheon of jazz greats has now become a reality. It is our hope that you will join us in this awesome celebration of life and history.

"IF WE DON'T TELL THEIR STORIES, THEN THE 'ANCESTARS' GET NO GLORY!!!"

Who Was Jimmie Lunceford????

"Jimmie Lunceford has the best of all bands. Duke [Ellington] is great, [Count] Basie is remarkable, but Lunceford tops them both."

-- Legendary Swing Band Leader Glenn Miller

"Manassas had the first orchestra of any school in the city with Mr. Lunceford. He was a good disciplinarian, a good teacher, and the students just had a fit over him. Lunceford played sophisticated jazz. I used to practice with them."-- Kathryn Perry Thomas, Beloved Memphis Educator & Manassas High Class of 1932 (JimmieLunceford.com, 2008)

"He would come over to the school each and every time he would play Memphis. His band would perform for the [Manassas] student body, and our band, the Little Rhythm Bombers, would play for him. This is where most of us, as students, saw him. He would bring the big band over to Manassas and perform." --Memphis Music Great, Educator & Manassas Rhythm Bomber Emerson, Jr. (JimmieLunceford.com, 2008)

WHY #JimmieLuncefordMatters #Jazznocracy2017

Although in 2009 he was finally awarded a long overdue brass note on the street (Beale Street) that he helped made famous, the tantalizing question still remains for many in 'The City of Good Abode': Who Was Jimmie Lunceford???

On June 6, 1902, in Fulton, Mississippi, a music genius was born. Please join us on June 6, 2017, as we honor the memory of one of Memphis’ unsung heroes on his birthday: Music & Education Giant Jimmie Lunceford!!!

Jimmie Lunceford was the first high school band director in Memphis City Schools History. He started music education in the Memphis City Schools as a volunteer at the first public high school for Blacks, Manassas High School. Ironically he was not hired to be a music instructor but a physical education instructor in addition to being the football, baseball, basketball and track coach as well as English/Spanish and sometimes history teacher. He started the first high school band at Manassas High School with no money, but with a lot of self-determination and self-confidence. He knew that music could help in building black youths' self esteem and instill community pride. Jimmie Lunceford through his pioneering efforts also started the first jazz studies program in U.S. public schools history. He eventually selected nine of his best music students and several college friends from Fisk University to form arguably the greatest jazz swing band of the 1930s and 1940s.

His band became known as 'The Chickasaw Syncopators' and was very popular locally, appearing at many Memphis area dances and even on the radio....They first recorded on June 6, 1930, Lunceford's 28th Life Affirmation Day...1930 is also the year that Jimmie Lunceford quits the day job and pursues his dream of music stardom full time.

In 1934, the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra eventually took over as the house band at the legendary Cotton Club where they literally became household names due to live regular national radio broadcasts from that venue. His Orchestra was nicknamed 'The Harlem Express' because of their overwhelming popularity NATIONALLY with the African American dance community of the 1930s & 40s... His fame also extended beyond that proud community for he was also recognized by the larger national and international audiences as well...The Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra was the top attraction at the legendary Apollo Theatre for a whole decade and was the first Black jazz orchestra to integrate the prestigious Paramount Theatre in New York City (which included back-to-back sold out engagements for several weeks)…Jimmie Lunceford was nicknamed 'The King Of The Battle Of The Bands' because his orchestra would constantly beat the best bands of the day in music competition and fan appeal which included Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Chick Webb, Benny Goodman & Glenn Miller...Jimmie Lunceford was also a 'movie star' (orchestra performed in the popular 1941 movie musical “Blues In The Night" and also in a 1936 film short) and his songs appeared in numerous popular cartoons of the day as well.

He owned and flew his own airplanes at a time when African Americans were not even allowed to attend flight schools in the U.S. Jimmie Lunceford was also a philanthropist. He gave large sums of money to start music education programs throughout the country to keep kids out of trouble and in school. He was truly a man ‘of’ as well as ‘ahead’ of his times.

Unfortunately, Jimmie died under ‘mysterious circumstances’ at the peak of his career

on July 12, 1947, while signing autographs in Seaside, Oregon. He was only 45 years old. His funerals were attended by thousands in both New York and Memphis. Unfortunately, the mortal remains of Jimmie Lunceford and his legacy it seems has laid forgotten about in historic Elmwood Cemetery in south Memphis for almost 70 years…Until now…Join Us As We Pay Homage To A Great Man & New Annual Tradition...The wreath laying ceremony and jam session will also serve as the the introduction to the soon to be annual "Jimmie Lunceford Jamboree Festival" which will take place fall 2017...

The Jimmie Lunceford Jamboree Festival Movement takes great pride and honor in honoring a true gentleman whose creative genius and legacy knows no boundaries...James “Jimmie” Melvin Lunceford was considered by many to be among jazz's greatest swing band leaders IF NOT THE GREATEST SWING BAND LEADER OF THEM ALL!!! Memphis Music Owes A Debt To The Visionary & Pioneering Efforts Of Jimmie Lunceford...And He Thought Enough Of Memphis That He Decided To Be Buried Here...Let's Give Him The Homecoming That He Deserves!!!

About The 2017 Jimmie Lunceford Jamboree Festival

"Jimmie Lunceford has the best of all bands. Duke [Ellington] is great, [Count] Basie is remarkable, but Lunceford tops them both."-- Legendary Swing Band Leader Glenn Miller (Determeyer, 2006)

“The music still sounds good, and it still inspires me, you know. I just think that band had everything. It was just one helluva band.”--Jazz Great Horace Silver (Determeyer, 2006)

He would bring the big band over to Manassas and perform."
--Memphis Music Great, Educator & Manassas Rhythm Bomber Emerson, Jr. (JimmieLunceford.com, 2008)

WeAllBe's next project is the 2017 Jimmie Lunceford Jamboree Festival. This year will mark the 115th anniversary of Jimmie Lunceford's birth and the 70 year anniversary of his death. Ronald Herd II aka R2C2H2 Tha Artivist, founder of The WeAllBe Group Inc., learned about Jimmie Lunceford, Charlie Parker and James Reese Europe from being exposed to the history and sounds of jazz music during his freshman year at Washington University in St. Louis. This revelation allowed him to become a genuine fan of the unsung music genius known as Jimmie Lunceford. Herd was anointed to do this work because he later he found out that his paternal grandmother was a dancer for Lunceford when he came to Kansas City along with his great uncles being childhood friends with jazz great Charlie Parker. He illustrated, wrote and self-published a book on James Reese Europe entitled 'James Reese Europe: Jazz Lieutenant.' The book is listed on the Smithsonian Institute's 'Jazz Books For Kids & Young Adults' List. Herd later met the late great Mr. Emerson Able, Jr., a Memphis music legend in his own right and a fellow Lunceford enthusiast, in 2007 and they became partners in crime as they went beyond trying to give honor to Jimmie Lunceford. Their collective grassroots effort led to Jimmie Lunceford finally receiving a brass note on Beale Street in 2009. The late Mr. Able was a wonderful and great 'Jegna' (A Better Word Than 'Mentor') to Herd and his legacy will live on through Herd's works on Lunceford.

Even when they gave Lunceford his Blues Trail in his hometown of Fulton, Mississippi they used some of the wording that Herd had created for Jimmie Lunceford. Herd even got Wikipedia to correct Lunceford's state of birth from Fulton, Missouri to Fulton, Mississippi.

Jimmie Lunceford taught the first high school band in the Memphis City Schools system along with having four other responsibilities (taught English and History along with being the Basketball and Football coaches). Jimmie Lunceford may have been the first person to teach jazz studies in an educational setting in any place in the world!!! He made history by bringing together his best high school band students along with his fellow Fisk alum musician buddies to form the popular locally Chickasaw Syncopators which later became world wide famous as the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra. They ruled the Cotton Club as the official house band for several years starting in 1934 and was the most popular act at the legendary Apollo Theatre for 10 yrs. They consistently beat out Duke Ellington, Count Basie and other great bands during that era and Jimmie Lunceford was known as the King of the Battle of the Bands and his band was nicknamed the Harlem Express because they were the number one band of choice for African American dancers in the United States. I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. Miles Davis in his autobiography gave honor to Manassas High School for producing world class musicians. Now it is time to give honor to Jimmie Lunceford.

We have several activities planned to give honor to his legacy and you will be provided the agenda later.
