'Avacyn Restored' Prerelease April 28-29, 2012

This weekend is the prerelease event for Magic The Gathering 'Avacyn Restored'. My son and I just re-picked up MTG after about 3 years removed from the game and we are planning on attending this event at our local game store, Empire Games. We are really looking forward to a fun day in a relaxed environment.

Privateer Press recently announced a new app for iPhone/Android called 'War Room'. This new app should be available sometime this March.

War Room, which will be available on tablets and handhelds for both the iOS and Android platforms from Privateer Press this March, gives players access to a wealth of features intended to expedite the army creation process and facilitate faster in-game rulings. In addition, users will receive regular news and rules updates from Privateer Press straight to their mobile devices.

Not too shabby, two models done within a week. That is a first in a very long time. Just like "Blaize", "Kommander Sorscha" was sitting in a primed state on my painting table for the past few months, so it was time for the paint to come on and add another completed model to my 'Khador' army.

WM: Cygnar Constance Blaize (Warcaster)

Once again it has been a few months since I lasted painted anything for Warmachine. The last model I painted was my "Kommander Harkevich" for my 'Khador' army.

Yesterday I had a little downtime so I decided to paint up "Constance Blaize" for my son's 'Cygnar' army. Constance has been sitting primed on my painting table for a few months so it was finally time to get her done. Plus for my son's 16th birthday earlier this month, he received the new 'Cygnar' Warjack "Gallant", so I had to finish up "Constance Blaize" so he will be able to play the two together.

I really really really dread painting white, and the detail Privateer Press had on this model was incredible. It was a little intimidating and I thought I was not going to do the model justice, but I feel she came out alright, at least tabletop quality.

WM: Khador Kommander Harkevich (Warcaster)

It has been nearly 5 months since I last painted a miniature (WM: Mercenaries Phinneus Shae) but yesterday I finally sat down at the painting table and worked on my new "Kommander Harkevich" model that I picked up a few weeks ago.

"Kommander Harkevich" was a bit intimidating when I first looked at him, the detail Privateer Press is adding to their models in just amazing, and since it has been awhile since I last painted, I was a little scared. Once I actually sat down and started applying the paint to the model, the flow was with me. He was not actually that bad to paint.

It feels good to finally paint again and be able to play a few games. I probably will not overload myself with painting like I have in the past (so I do not burn out again, plus work has really been busy), but If I can paint a model a week, I will be happy.

Harkevich's Warjack "Black Ivan" comes out this Wednesday, I am going to have to add this model to my Khador army. Plus I still have a "Kommander Sorscha" model and two Warcaster's for my son's 'Cygnar' army that I need to paint, plus a few miscellaneous models I still have for 'Khador'. So much for slowing down!

Daily Chronicle: 6/18/2011 'Wrath and Harkevich'

It has been just about four months since I last posted, and about four months since I really played a game. I did get my feet wet a few weeks with a quick game of Warmachine with my son and the urge to paint/play more is starting to come back. I haven't been doing nothing, my other hobby (1/24th slot car racing) has been taking a lot of my time recently and when I get back from vacation next weekend (Las Vegas again) I am going to try and start to manage my time between both hobbies.

What a perfect time to jump back into Warmachine with the release of the new 'Wrath' book this week

and "Kommander Harkevich, The Iron Wolf".

So while I was running out doing some last minute errands before our trip tomorrow, I swung by local game store (Empire Games) and picked up two 'Wrath' books and "Harkevich". Looking forward to getting this Warcaster painted. Oh and I love the new Warjacks for Khador! Cannot wait for their releases......

Hopefully it will not be another four months before I post again :)

WM: Mercenaries Phinneus Shae (Warcaster)

I know I have been slacking a little bit lately. It has been two weeks since I last painted a model. Yesterday I actually sat down and decided to get started on the new Mercenaries that my son received. He decided that he wanted to do a themed 'pirate' list around "Captain Phinneus Shae"
As with most armies that I start painting, I have to paint the leader or in this case the 'Warcaster' first. He is the one leading the rest of the army on the battlefield. Once I paint the 'Warcaster' then I can move on to the rest of the models.

I am hoping to get the first 15 points painted before my son decides to add on to 25 points. My backlog is getting bigger and bigger and I a finding less and less time to catch up.

I have two Solo's that are also primed and ready to for this army. Once they get completed I'll let my son play with the army again for awhile before I start on his Warjacks (I usually do not like to play with a model when it is primed, I do not mind unpainted, just not primed)

Daily Chronicle: 2/17/2011 'More Mercenaries'

Since I was out of town last week in Las Vegas for an extended Anniversary weekend, not much has been done on the modeling/painting front. When we got back Saturday night, the next few days were spent playing catch-up games for our 'in-house' WM/H League and also getting in a few games for 'Shattered Grounds'. For myself personally, I am playing 'Shattered Grounds' for the 'overall map' aspect of the campaign and not the 'in-store' coin. I am enjoying the game for the game and the global outcome rather than trying to win a store coin.

Now that another weekend fast approaches, it is time to get some models prepped so we can get some painting done.

Protectorate of Menoth
I still have a lot more models I can paint for this army, but I think I will take a week off these guys and venture onto a new army.

Mercenaries (Talion Charter)
My son wanted a Mercenary army themed around "Captain Phinneus Shae" so he came up with following 15 point list that he would like to try out.

Shae's 'Tier' brings down the cost of the Solo's to 1 point so this list is right at 15 points.

We purchased the models when I got back from Las Vegas and I quickly assembled them. Shae, Doc and Hawk are all set to hit the painting table. Since I enjoy painting Warcasters and Solo's I will tackle these three first. An added bonus for painting the two Solo's is that it will earn us a 'Commendation' stamp in the 'Shattered Grounds' campaign.

Once these three are done then it will probably be back to Menoth for awhile.

WM: Protectorate Wracks (Solo)

With Super Bowl XLV being played today, I wanted to paint something that would be fast and easy. What can be any easier or faster than painting some "Wracks" for Protectorate of Menoth. Base coat, dry brush, wash and voila, finished. Just in time for the game this evening.
With 'Shattered Grounds' starting tomorrow night and I'll be heading out of town this week to Las Vegas for a little 15th Anniversary 'fun', these will probably be the only models I get to complete this week. There may be a small chance that I can get another Solo completed, but that is a slim chance. Most likely I may prep some models Tuesday night so they are ready to be painted when I get back Saturday night.

WM: Khador Kossite Woodsmen (Unit)

It has been quite awhile since I did some work on models for my own Khador army (the Khador "War Dog" was the last model I painted for myself) but as I mentioned yesterday, I was determined to get my "Kossite Woodsmen" finished today. I had slowly worked on these guys through out the week while also working on some Protectorate of Menoth models for my son, but this morning I woke up bright and early to get these guys finished.

I was scheduled to play a friend in a Warmachine League game this afternoon and I my goal was to have this Unit completed in time. The game was scheduled for 3:00 PM and by 2:30 PM this Unit was fully dry and packed in my Warmachine Battlefoam Bag.

The "Kossite Woodsmen" made it in time for the game, but the coach never called on them to come in. With the 'Ambush' rule, this unit can come on at the end of the player's 'Control Phase' except for on Turn 1. The scenario we rolled for today was 'Break The Line' and this Unit was going to be perfect for it. I ended up winning the game on Turn 3 (a very hard fought / fun "chess match" against Circle of Orboros with everybody in 'Stealth' mode) but I almost had called on this Unit to come in on that Turn. I think the threat of this Unit with 'Ambush' helped with the outcome of the game.

I am very pleased on how these models came out, especially my 'lady friend'. I took a little extra time with her. I mentioned yesterday that this Unit was taking me a little longer to paint, with the exception of two sculpts, the others are unique, so it is like painting six Solo models. I wanted to do a little more than just base coat and wash and you can tell by the results.

I guess it is now time to work on some more Menoth.

"Kossite Woodsmen"

Besides working on some Protectorate of Menoth models this past week for my son's army, I have also been slowly working on some "Kossite Woodsmen" for my Khador army. Seeing how each of the models in this Unit is unique, this Unit is taking me a little bit longer to paint. It is just like painting the equivalent of six Solo models.

So I thought I go ahead and post a 'work in progress' picture of the Unit.

The plan is to continue working on this Unit tomorrow morning and hopefully get them done by the afternoon. This evening is out of the question since I will be meeting an old friend of mine for some Warhammer 40K gaming (I haven't played in awhile and joked with him that he will have to teach me how to play again). We'll be dusting off the Tyranid army for this 1750 point match. If time also allows tonight I will probably get my second game in for our Warmachine League. I may just do another 15 point Mangled Metal with my son so he can use his new Menoth Warcaster and Warjack.

"New Army Thoughts"

My brain is always churning away thinking about what new army I want to collect and paint next. I still have the Trollbloods that I started collecting for Hordes (currently at 15 points of models for this army), but I really enjoy Warmachine over Hordes. For me, Hordes is just a 'second game' for when I want to 'throw down' and try something different. This is the year of Warmachine for me.

So with that being said, I still need to collect a Cryx and Retribution of Scryah army for Warmachine. I've always wanted to start a Cryx army (just something about playing evil), but the latest 'No Quarter 34' has peaked my interest with Retribution. Which one will be next? Or maybe both! We shall see what I decide when I come back from Las Vegas next week (15th Anniversary). In any case I always like to start with at least 15 points for the army, but in this case, I may start these at 25 points. Then eventually they will be built out to at least 35 points.

WM: Protectorate Vanquisher (Warjack)

My "Kossite Woodsmen" are starting to feel jealous. The other day when I 'primed' "Amon Ad-Raza" I also 'primed' my son's "Vanquisher" model for The Protectorate of Menoth. The "Vanquisher" model was one of the models my son purchased this past weekend at the "Mercenary Market".

I know I should be continuing on with the "Woodsmen" (hopefully this weekend I'll finish them) but the "Vanquisher" was just staring at me and saying "paint me, paint me". So I obliged. I was able to get this model started last night and just finished him up.

One more Warjack to paint for Menoth, and the rest then are all Solo's and Units.

WM: Protectorate High Allegiant Amon Ad-Raza (Warcaster)

Last Saturday my son received a 'steal' of a deal at our local game store (Empire Games). About every three months that hold what is called a 'Mercenary Market', individuals can come in and sell any wargaming items that they want. The store handles all the transactions and at the end of the day, the seller receives a store gift card for the total amount they sold. No fee's for table space, only drawback is that you receive store credit.

Anyways, we were there getting a game in and the 'Mercenary Market' was going on and we saw a table with some Protectorate of Menoth. He had the following items for sale:

All for $47.00 I asked my son if he wanted it (he would be paying for it) and he said "yea".

So now he has a pretty decent 25 point army he can run. He'll eventually work on getting them up to 35 points. I think a full Unit of Bastions is a must.

We fast-forward to this past Monday night and we are back at Empire Games for 'League Night'. The first game I played a 'Mangled Metal' scenario against my son using his Cygnar again and he was using Menoth. Cygnar took revenge and won this game. My son's second game he played his Cygnar force and a friend of ours (Ian) asked he if could try the Menoth force. They played a 25 point game and Menoth came away victorious.

During that game another friend of ours (Rob, who now took over the 'gaming forums' here is Arizona) was making fun of me that there was unpainted Menoth models on the table (all in Jest)(he knows I prefer to play with painted miniatures and he has been following my progress on this blog).

So I have to start doing something about it. I am probably going to dedicate most of this month getting the Protectorate of Menoth army painted. I'll throw in a few other models just so I do not get bored.

I had already started on some "Kossite Woodsmen" for my Khador army this week (hopefully they will be done in a few days), but last night before dinner I decided to start on High Allegiant Amon Ad-Raza for the Menoth army. When dinner was over with, I went back to the painting table and finished him up.

I also was able to 'prime' the "Vanquisher" (he may be next).

Not a stellar month nor a bad month regarding Painting Points for January 2011. Part of that reason is that I enjoy painting the Warcaster's and Solo's and those only earn me '1 Point'. I am alright with that though. The feeling of getting that model finished is well worth more than '1 Point'. Since picking up Warmachine/Hordes, I also no longer have the '10 Point' Vehicles I used to paint for Warhammer 40K.

I earned myself 30 points for January 2011 and just like the last couple of months, all of those points have been earned painting Warmachine/Hordes.

Battle Report: WM Cygnar vs. Protectorate (25 Point League Game)

We are allowed to play 2 League Games per week and as of yesterday I had only had 1 game in for the week. Since I was home watching the kids while I let the wife have a "day out" alone, my son and I decided to 'throw down' in the garage. My son already had his 2 games in for the week, so he was playing as a 'neutral' opponent against me.

Since most of his League games he usually plays his Cygnar army and since we were playing in the garage, he decided to give his Protectorate army a turn (he added a lot more new models this past Saturday and can now field a playable 25 point force). I then decided to play his Cygnar army (just a little change from my Khador).

Turn 1:
Menoth: Menoth advances forward and the Choir casts 'Passage' Hymn on the Warjacks to protect them from Ranged Attacks.

Cygnar: Hunter and Defender advance up the left flank. Cannon advances forward. Trencher infantry advance towards the 'Mosh Pit' launch a few Smoke Bombs and the rest Dig In. The rest of Cygnar advance forward and Siege casts 'Fox Hole' on the Trencher's to gain some cover.

Turn 2:
Menoth: Continue advancing forward and using 'Passage' on the Warjacks and 'Defenders Ward' on Kreoss.

Cygnar: Thinking that I may have the range, I decided to take the chance and go for the 'kill shot' this turn. I keep all my Focus on Siege. Siege advances forward and casts 'Fox Hole' again, but this time centering the AOE on a Choir model which places the Menoth Warjacks and Choir Unit completely within the AOE which now allows LOS to Kreoss. I measure my Control Area once more and I am just short of 14" to reach Kreoss for the shot. I then had to use his Special Attack 'Ground Pounder' since it is a 4" AOE. Siege 'boost's' the RAT and misses Kreoss. The Trencher Cannon targets the High Paladin next to Kreoss with the 3" AOE and scores a Direct Hit. The High Paladin takes some damage, Kreoss just gets a scratch. My plan for Turn 2 'kill shot' just falls short and I left Siege in a bad position right behind some Trencher models.

Turn 3:
Menoth: I should have kept my mouth shut this turn, but since it was my son, I gave him some pointers. While he was distributing his Focus to his Warjacks I noticed he was placing more than needed on the Revenger and Crusader. Both of these Warjacks had the chance to 'Slam' the Trenchers into Siege but my son did not see this. I decided to point this out to him. He then re-allocated his Focus and proceeded with the 'Slams. First was the Revenger. The Revenger managed to kill the Trencher model, but failed to slam him far enough into Siege. Up next was the Crusader, the Crusader slammed the Trencher into Siege killing the Trencher model and causing a few damage points on Siege. Now that Siege was 'Knocked Down' the Vanquisher advanced forward to get a direct shot at Siege. The Vanquisher hits Siege with his 'Flame Belcher' boosting the damage roll and places Siege on 'Fire'. I then help my son out and recommend using Kreoss to cast 'Cleansing Fire' using the Revenger as a 'Arc Node' on Siege. With a DEF 5 on Siege, Kreoss hits and boosts the damage. Siege is left with 1 point of damage.

Cygnar: Siege fails to shake off 'Fire' and burns to his death...... Game Over.....

I'll be looking for a rematch possibly tonight. I deployed Cygar wrong and I think I have a better tactic t use next time. We did play out the rest of Turn 3 (in case Siege would have gotten rid of 'Fire'). He would have scored 36 damage points on Kreoss that turn, with now being in Range and using his 'Feat'.

WM: Protectorate Revenger (Warjack)

It was another slow week for painting, but I was able to manage to get a model done yesterday to add to the Protectorate of Menoth army that my son has. I decided to work on his "Revenger" Light Warjack that he has. I also decided to try a slightly different painting style with this Warjack.

If you recall in my post on painting the "Crusader" Heavy Warjack in which I used a 'White Primer' for that Warjack, I had talked about using a 'Black Primer' for the next Warjack that I paint for Menoth.

Well with the "Revenger", I went with the 'Black Primer'. It was much faster to paint up like I had thought, but now I feel that 'red's' may look a bit too dark. I washed the 'red's' with GW "Badab Black" like I had done previously, with the 'White Primer', but with the black background, thet may be to dark. If I use the 'Black Primer' again, I may stick to just using the "Gryphonne Sephia" wash on the 'red's' and save the "Badab Black" for the metals. We learn from our mistakes.

I am still stuck in a dilemma. I really do not know if I should use the 'White or Black' primers on the next models. I have some Solo's and another Warcaster to try. Most likely I'll stick with the 'Black'. Like I stated above, tends to paint a bit faster.
