Out of all of the “anti-aging” ingredients available on the market today, retinols are the only ones scientifically shown to work on a molecular level.

Retinol is the less-aggressive form of prescription-strength tretinoin and also has scientific evidence to prove its effectiveness. These creams are best started once every other night, a small amount used for the whole face. If too much is used, it increases irritation, not effectiveness. It’s important to use a moisturizer while the skin gets used to the retinol (usually takes about 2 weeks) as dryness can be a problem. Newer formulations of products have controlled delivery systems and special emollient ingredients to help reduce irritation. The use of a sunblock is mandatory in the morning because these products will make the skin slightly more sun sensitive.

Retinoids and retinols are best used at night because they are photo-inactivated, meaning direct sunlight will break them down and make them less effective. The most effective over-the-counter products contain 1% retinol (but no less than 0.5%).

There is no reason to be too aggressive at first because that may lead to excessive irritation and, many times, the person may stop using the cream (when all they really needed was a longer amount of time for their skin to get used to it). The best way to use retinol is by gradual introduction.

Cleaning Your Paint Brushes After an Oil Painting Project

An artist’s most valuable tools are his or her brushes, and to keep a paintbrush lasting as long as possible it’s important to get all the paint out of the bristles after painting. (It also helps to buy good artist paintbrushes to begin with.)

Here are some processes to consider when cleaning your very own paint brushes.

First get some paint thinner, turpentine, or mineral spirits—ideally you should already have some on hand to mix with linseed stand oil for painter’s medium. Pour a little bit of the thinner into a small container which you can seal up afterward; you’ll be able to use the same amount of thinner for a long time.

You’re also going to need some liquid soap— you can use regular hand soap for this but if you have a brush cleaning agent you can trust, you can use it as well; either way, these cleaning products work well. The only advantage of using a brush cleaner is that you get to have added bristle conditioners mixed in, so it may prolong the life of your brushes better than regular hand soap.

Of course, you won’t need the brush cleaner or soap until you get all the excess paint out of your brushes. Here’s where a little finger strength comes in handy. Take your brush with one hand and a piece of newspaper with the other, wrapping the newspaper around the metal part of the brush.

Then, just squeeze as tightly as possible, starting right at the base of the bristles, while pulling the brush back through your fingers. Get as much paint as you can out of the brush.

Go ahead and do it a few times, and especially try to remove all the paint that’s stuck close to the ferrule (the metal part of the brush.)

You should end up with splotches of paint all over your newspaper and a lot less of the paint left in your brush.

Next, take your brush over to the small container of paint thinner and dip it in, scrubbing across the bottom of the container to loosen more paint.

Repeat the squeezing technique with more newspaper, but be warned that it can get a little messier this time around since your brush will have picked up a lot of the liquid thinner. You should see a quite a bit more color flowing out of the bristles however.

Once you’ve squeezed out the thinner a few times your paintbrush will probably have a little more of its original color back, but there’ll still be a paint stain left from the oils.

To finish cleaning the brush, pump some liquid soap into the palm of one hand and hold the paintbrush with your other.

Scrub the brush back and forth across your palm, letting the soap penetrate the bristles to pull out more oil pigment. When the soap gets too contaminated by the paint, rinse both your hand and the brush with water, then get more soap and begin scrubbing again.

Repeat the process until the soap doesn’t change color in your palm, proving that there’s no more oil paint stuck in the brush. (NOTE: If you’re concerned about possible absorption of Cadmium into your skin during this stage, feel free to use disposable gloves.)

Rinse out all the soap and use your newspaper one last time to get most of the water out of the bristles.

It’s important to clean your brushes immediately after you finish painting, even when you’re tempted to let them sit for a day or two. Letting them soak in paint thinner isn’t a good alternative either; it will just weaken the glue holding the bristles in place.

Although it may seem like a lot of effort, good care and cleaning of your brushes will help them last longer and stay functional throughout their lifespan—keeping you from the frustration of using worn out tools, and ultimately saving you money.

Keeping Acrylic Paints Workable, Stopping them Drying Out - Because acrylics dry so very fast, squeeze only a small amount out of a tube at a time. If you're utilising a traditional wooden or plastic palette buy a squirt bottle so that you can spray a fine mist over the paint to keep it moist. The special 'Stay-wet' palettes – where the paint sits on a sheet of wax paper overlying a damp piece of waterproof paper does the same thing - keeps the paints moist.

Blot your Brushes - Keep a some paper towel or a piece of cloth besides your water container and get into the habit of always wiping your brushes on it after you rinse tem in water them. This stops water from running down the ferrule and onto your painting, leaving blotches.

Opaque or Transparent - All acrylic paints are opaque if applied straight from the tube or with only a tiny amount of water added – or if the paints are blended with a white paint. However, when diluted with water acrylics can be utilised like airbrushing or watercolours and the paints become transparent.

Acrylic vs Watercolour Washes - When an acrylic paint wash dries-out, it is fixed and permanent. Unlike a watercolor the dry paint is insoluble and can be over-painted without any concerns that the wash will be affected. The hues of the various layers combine optically to produce a unique effect. A watercolour glaze can be removed using water and a cloth, whereas the acrylic one is permanent and cannot be removed, but it can be painted-over.

Think Thin for Glazes - If you want to produce transparent glazes using acrylic paints the technique is to build them up in thin successive layers. Note that a thick layer will produce a glossy rather than a transparent look.

How to Improve the Flow of Paint Without Losing Color - To improve the flow of a color without losing of the strength of the color via dilution with water, always use flow-improver medium not just water.

Blending Acrylic Paints - Acrylics paints dry rapidly and so you have to work fast if you want to blend colors. One trick is to dampen the paper or other surface slightly as this will increase the time the paint can be re-worked.

Marking Hard Edges - Because Acrylic paints dry hard and bond permanently you can use masking tape applied directly onto the dried acrylic paint without threatening to damage the layer underneath. This tape makes it easy to produce a sharp or hard edge, similar to the method used wen painting a house. Make sure all the tape edges are stuck down very firmly and be careful painting along the edge. Don't apply the paint thickly otherwise you won't produce a sharp line when you lift the tape. Apply an even coat and be aware where you will have to lift the tape.

Using Masking Fluid - Masking fluids can be used just as effectively with acrylics washes, as they are with watercolors. Make sure the fluid is completely dry before you attempt paint over it, and don't paint too thickly. Masking fluid works on both paper and canvas. It is a good idea to experiment first to get familiar with the technique before using it on an important painting. Keep washing your brushes out with water and once the masking fluid dries it will ruin the brush. A good trick is to dip the brush into some detergent such as shampoo or washing-up liquid before using the brush for masking fluid as this makes it easier to clean the brush.

Using Acrylic Paint as a Glue for Collage - Provided the acrylic paint is used as a thick coat and the item to be glued is not very heavy, the acrylic paint will act well as a glue in a collage. This saves time and avoids the need to cover-up the glue.

Watercolor Effects - Many painters like to use acrylics in a very fluid state, to create an effect similar to watercolor. There is a major difference, however, as with acrylics, the dilute washes can be layered one on top of the other without the risk of disturbing the colors underneath, provided the layers are dried thoroughly between applications. Once a layer dries it becomes fixed and is insoluble in water. One disadvantage is that the color layer cannot be in modifying once it starts to dry. You can however still avoid this problem using two methods. You can either wet the paper before starting to apply the paint. Or you can use an extra brush dipped in water. Immediately after using another brush to apply the paint use the wet brush to soften the edges and slow the drying.

Dripping and Pouring Techniques - This technique requires a very fluid acrylic paint that is poured directly onto the canvas. Or you can dip a brush, dipping it into the fluid paint and allowing it to run off the brush onto the painting.

Sgraffito or Scratching Techniques - Sgraffito refers to a scratching technique. It involves scratching into the top layer of partially dry paint to reveal either the wet base layer or the dry color beneath. You can use various tools for this technique, including screwdrivers, toothpicks or a sharpened end of an old paintbrush handle.

Making Use of a Squeegee - Even a standard squeegee that you can buy at any hardware store can be use to create interesting effects. You can also buy various tools of various shapes with foam rubber attached. To use this technique first squeeze out some blobs of paint along one edge of your support. You can add a series of colors. Then using a single fluid motion drag the paint across the surface or your painting with your squeegee mixing and smearing the paint in a single motion.

Use High Quality Paints - When you start and you are still learning it is best to use cheap paints. But for your final paintings always use high quality paints and brushes. The best quality paints have consistent and brighter colors.

Don’t Skimp on Paint - Trying to skimp of paint to save money is a bit mistake. Your paintings will be more interesting and 'alive' if you lay down a brush stroke with a full load of paint, leave it without any changes, and then reload your brush for the nest stroke. Don’t try and scrub the paint into the canvas or rework the paint unnecessarily, otherwise you will end up just staining the canvas or paper, and not really painting. The paintings look best when you don't skimp on paint.

The season for socializing is upon us and our calendars are filled with holiday house parties, work happy hours, and of course, New Year’s Eve. It’s a time for cocktail dresses and smoky eyes, sequins and red lips. We all want to look our best, and we usually do when arriving at our destination. But what about after a few hours of nibbling on hors d'oeuvres, sipping champagne, and hitting the dance floor? Not so much. So we reached out to M.A.C Cosmetics senior artist Keri Blair to teach us how to keep our makeup in place, so we can have a holiday party exit just as grand as our entrance.

Prep your skin. Prepping your face before applying makeup is essential if you want to keep things in place all evening. First, apply a light moisturizer evenly all over your skin and follow with a makeup primer.

Apply lip liner on your entire lip. Choose a lip liner that is close to your favorite holiday shade and apply it all over your lip as if it were lipstick. Then, apply your lipstick over that. This will keep your color vibrant and make it last even after all the eggnog.

Wear lip gloss over your lipstick. To be extra safe and make sure that lip lasts, apply a light layer of clear gloss over your lipstick. This will give it a festive shine and seal the color in for even longer wear.

Try a caffeinated eye cream. It’s a given that your holiday schedule will encroach on your sleep, but that doesn’t mean you have to arrive to the party with dark circles under your eyes. Before you apply concealer, prep your under eye with a cooling and caffeinated eye cream. These caffeinated eye creams are wonderful for a night-out because it contains a high-octane dose of caffeine powder and yeast extract that helps to de-puff and create a smoother, brighter under eye area even after midnight.

Highlight under your eye. For an extra boost of brightness that will last until the wee hours of the night, apply a light layer of highlighting powder after your makeup in an inverted triangle under your eye. Brush it on, then tap it into your skin using your finger.

Set your makeup with atomized water. To keep your makeup looking fresh, dab a few drops of atomized water on your face with your fingers or a cotton ball after you apply the finishing touches.

Keep blotting sheets in your purse. After all the drinking and dancing, many of us end up with a layer of sheen across our foreheads—and not the “Oh, you’re glowing,” luminescent kind. Your knee-jerk reaction may be to apply powder, but instead of adding more makeup, dab a blotting sheet on your face to remove excess oil and shine without disturbing the makeup that’s already there.

1. Invest in Screen Protectors

Screen protectors cost $10 to $30 depending on the material they are made from. All styles protect your screen from every day wear, but the pricier models offer better protection from harder drops and impact. Screens pay themselves off quickly because even with care plans, including Apple Care, you still end up paying an additional fee for getting your screen replaced.

Screen protectors are easy to put on, especially the dry kind that only require a spotless screen. If you miss-align, you can try again. The wet style of screen protectors test your patience and are better left to the pros. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself, get a cellphone store or mall kiosk to do it for you.

There are three kind of screen protectors, starting with the cheapest:

Here you will find screen hardness ratings at 9H or more.

Gorilla Glass, featured in better phones, protects against impact – often demonstrated with hammers and nails, but it still scratches. If you are a beach bum, get a glass screen protector to keep sand away. Smartphone companies recommend that you use screen protectors in addition to cases. Some cases offer better value when they include a mid-level quality screen protector.

Cookies Made Easy!

Cookie-baking is a simple task you'd easily enjoy doing most especially if you are still beginning to discover your hidden talent as a sweet baking genius. Cookies are great snack treats for your family and friends because you don't need too much fuzzy ingredients to be able to whip up something fancy for your guests to munch-on. Not only that, you also get to save tons of time in the kitchen while making your home spotless before guests arrive! How? Because when it comes baking cookies, you get to make dozens of them per batch in the oven. This means that while those cookies are baking in the oven, you can do all the welcoming on your right hand and still be able to balance your cookie tray on your left (talking about hitting three birds with one stone).

With all that being said, here's a quick recipe you can follow to create these fabulous cookies in a timely fashion.

Materials to Use:

Mixing Bowl

Measuring Spoons

Whisk

Sifter (Sieve)

Cookie Cutter

Spatula

Rolling Pin

Plastic Wrap

Baking Oven

Ingredients Needed:

4 tbsp. Sugar

1 tbsp. Cocoa powder

9 tbsp. Cake flour (or plan flour)

2 tbsp. Cornstarch (or Katakuriko)

1 Egg yolk

2 Drops Vanilla essence

40 grms. Butter (room temp.)

Procedure

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the softened butter and sugar.
Add the egg yolk and 2 drops of vanilla essence.
In a separate mixing bowl, measure dry ingredients using a measuring spoon, combine and sift using a sieve.
Add the dry sifted ingredients to the mixing bowl with wet ingredients.
Using a spatula, mix the combined ingredients until you get a crumbly consistency.
Using your clean hands, Bring the combined mixture all together and wrap it using a plastic wrap.
Allow your dough to rest and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes.
After your dough has rested, take it out of the fridge and roll the dough out using a rolling pin until thickness reaches a quarter of an inch.
Using a cookie cutter (or any material that can cut any form), cut out fun shapes your guests can enjoy.
Bake in an oven preheated to 170℃ for 13-15 minutes.
(Note: If making chocolate flavor, sift the cocoa together with the dry ingredients in Step 3.)
For added appeal and flavor profile: Add icing, fruits, or any toppings you can think of to your cookie dough.

8 Time-Saving Lunch Box Tips

Let's face it -- back-to-school month is a lot like New Year's. Leading up to the first week, we are full of inspiration for a year of sending our kids to school perfectly coiffed in their new clothes, with their healthy-yet-creative lunches and not-yet-lost school supplies.

Then a week goes by, and the Stepford Mom urge gives way to reality. Imperfect, chaotic reality. After a few years of experiencing the inevitable back-to-school hangover, all mom cultivate the knowledge about realistically packing lunches. Here are some of top lunch box tips:

1. Pack what you're taking to work. This is an extension of my one-meal-three-ways philosophy, which involves creating one meal that can accommodate adults, kids and babies. It's a lot easier to pack school lunches while packing your own (especially when packing leftovers.)

2. When uninspired, use finger foods! Finger Food Friday is a huge hit with my kids and gives me a break at the end of a long week. It can be carrot sticks with hummus, celery with cream cheese, fruit with yogurt dip or salami and cheese with crackers. The idea is a snack tray for lunch.

3. Themes. You can find fun in themes while packing Sunday's leftover veggie quiche. For this Sunday's venture try to go with a French theme and tore off a piece of baguette, added a slice of brie, a cluster of grapes and a piece of chocolate. Voila!

4. Breakfast for lunch. Pack an individual yogurt with granola, fruit and a hard-boiled egg. For a quick time-saving tip, scramble eggs and bacon and put them in a Thermos.

5. Pack a Thermos. Leftovers are truly the easiest, no-brainer lunch to pack. Always try to make extras for lunch. If your kids are opposed to leftovers (some really do not want what they had the night before), freeze the leftovers in a container and use for another day. Stock your freezer with single-serve leftovers, which you can thaw in the morning before school and pop in a Thermos.

6. Batch baking. On Sunday mornings, make a couple dozen of the kids' favorite muffins to put in the freezer for lunches. You can put one in every other day for their morning snack.

7. More is more! While less is usually more, when it comes to packing kids lunches, the philosophy does not apply. They go through sporadic growth spurts and it is important that we always ensure that they have enough food for the day. Throw in an extra apple, granola bar, milk or bag of cut veggies if you notice your child is demolishing their lunch every day.

8. For more clean and organized lunchbox, try organizing all your preparations with the use of silicone baking cups for added ease in compartmentalizing and cleaning.

Overcoming The Fear of a Blank Canvas

First the good news: you're not alone in this by any means. It happens because we want a painting to come out right; the fear that the result will not be what we imagine paralyzes us. It's also been a while since you've painted, so your skills are rusty; what you're doing now doesn't match what you know you're capable of and that's also inhibiting. It's also because we see our paintings as part of ourselves, not as product; we invest a piece of ourselves in them and want them all to be perfect, which is never going to be possible.

"The development of an imagined piece into an actual piece is a progression of decreasing possibilities, as each step in execution reduces further options by converting one -- and only one-- possibility into a reality. ... the piece you make is always one step removed from what you imagined... after all, your imagination is free to race a hundred works ahead, conceiving pieces you could and perhaps should and maybe one day will execute -- but not today, not in the piece at hand. All you can work on today is directly in front of you. ... art materials seduce us with their potential."

In terms of practical things to do, don't set out to do a finished, complete painting. Do small studies, say an apple and its shadow, a vase, a hand, or an eye. Something that can go wrong or be reworked many times because it's just a learning piece, not a 'real' painting.

With drawing you could take a piece of charcoal and cover the whole sheet, then rub it in with your hand. Then draw back in with a plastic eraser. By doing this you've already mucked up the whole sheet of paper before you start, so anything you do can only be an improvement.

If you've got some paintings you've done that you like, or like parts of, put these on display to remind yourself that you can do it. If you've done it once, you'll be able to do it again. Painting requires perseverance not talent.

Let's give Vincent van Gogh the last word on the issue of intimidating blank canvases:

"You do not know how paralyzing that staring of a blank canvas is. It says to the painter, you can't do anything ... Many painters are afraid of the blank canvas, but the blank canvas is afraid of the really passionate painter who is daring."

Any time you’re searching for beauty advice (or just for someone to vent your lipstick-related frustrations to), r/makeupaddiction is the place to be. Today, they’re discussing their first world makeup problems. The whole thread is worth a read, but if you only have time for the highlights, here are 10 enjoyable posts you'd!

1. "That I only have one set of lips on my face."

This might be a confusing statement to people who enjoy having normal facial features, but everyone who collects lip products understands norimw’s pain. It’s hard to look at a drawer full of a hundred different lipsticks and know that you only get to wear one today.

2. "I have so much stuff I never hit pan on anything, and for liquids, they expire before I finish them."

It’s really hard having tons of products available to you at all times, okay? It’s like having a table full of Thanksgiving dinner and only being able to eat one little plate.

3. "All my brushes and sponges don’t clean themselves."

This feeling is something all women can relate to. Who has the time to be diligent about makeup hygiene? Even famous painters had interns sitting around to wash their brushes for them. We should all get interns.

4. "I have so many eyeshadows and I can’t figure out a look that requires more than three."

That’s when you start mixing all the colors together until you’re wearing about 50 layers of shadows that just end up looking brown. That’s what kids do with Easter egg dyes.

This is debatable. It's not all weird per se. Many women tend to wear lipstick when doing household chores such as vacuuming or making dinner (more often than they wear it out). Who has the energy to worry about what other people think of her lips? Wear it for you!

7. "I keep buying lipsticks in shades that I already own. Like, do I really need every variation of hot pink that MAC puts out? Yes."

Women with enough bottles of burgundy nail polish to paint a whole minivan would would cosign to this.

8. "Depotting feels like writing in textbooks. I know it probably is super useful but I can’t bring myself to mess with the natural order of things."

Mix-and-match palettes are a great idea in theory, but something just feels so wrong when you start playing god. After all, who wants to be the Frankenstein eyeshadows? Get a palette that's perfect enough for you to not think of changing anything.

9. "I had all my eyeshadow palettes successfully crammed into one small bento box, and then Tarte had to come along with its stupid fall palette that’s TOO WIDE and therefore has to get tucked between the wall and the bento. UGH."

3 Ways to Align Your Appearance with the Law of Attraction

Wikipedia defines The Law of Attraction as "the name given to the belief that "like attracts like" and that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, one can bring about positive or negative results."

There are 3 steps to The Law of Attraction

1) Ask: clearly ask the universe for what you want
2) Believe: believe the universe is delivering what you want
3) Allow: the most important and difficult step for many people.

This is the step where you need to emotionally feel in alignment with what you've asked for in order for your 'ask' to manifest.

Here's a great quote from the movie 'The Secret' to illustrate what emotional alignment is - "It's really important that you feel good. Because this feeling good is what goes out as a signal into the universe and starts to attract more of itself to you. So the more you can feel good, the more you will attract the things that help you feel good and that will keep bringing you up higher and higher" - Joe Vitale

So what do the appearance choices you are making right now have to do with The Law of Attraction? A lot, because like it or not your appearance choices contribute to the way you feel about yourself and to the vibration you are emitting into the universe.

Here's a great and simple exercise to gauge how your appearance is impacting your point of attraction this moment. Look at yourself honestly in a full length mirror. Really take in your appearance from head to toe (from your hair to your shoes). Do you immediately get a feeling of excitement and joy? Are your eyes more drawn to your face or does your hair and outfit overpower the authentic YOU?

If you are not happy with your responses to the questions from the above exercise, it's time to get your appearance into alignment with the Law of Attraction using these 3 steps:

1. Find out colors for your hair, clothing, accessories and makeup that are in alignment with you. By wearing your right colors you are guaranteed to look younger, healthier, more vibrant and feel great.

Everything in the universe emits an energy vibration, including color. A great holistic practice to test someone's energy vibration as it relates to different colors is Energy Muscle Testing. This is a practice whereby muscles are tested to identify whether thoughts, actions, feelings and things are in vibrational harmony with an individual. When someone is muscle tested wearing colors that are in alignment with them, their muscles are stronger thus giving off a higher energy vibration into the world.

2. Find out hair, clothing and accessory styles that maximize the authentic and best you. Much like wearing your right colors raises your vibration and contributes to your emotional alignment, so does wearing hair, clothing and accessory styles that are in harmony with the best and authentic you.

The key elements of this step is to identify your body silhouette, personality and lifestyle needs. Sometimes it is really hard to take an honest look at ourselves to determine what are needs are in these areas.

3. Implement your color and style needs into your appearance choices. This is the most fun and rewarding step and involves these activities:

• Cleaning out your closet to get rid of items that no longer serve your colour and style needs.
• Visiting a hair colorist and stylist to implement your hair colour and style needs.

• Visiting a make-up professional to receive training on make-up application that is in alignment with your color and style needs.

• Shopping to address wardrobe and accessory gaps you created when cleaning out your closet. You will find that once you know your color and style needs, shopping is so much more easy and efficient.

So now you have 3 steps to getting your appearance into alignment with the Law of Attraction.

What you are feeling in this moment represents your point of attraction and therefore represents what the universe is delivering to you in moments following (your future).

Are your appearance choices contributing to a feeling of excitement and joy with you? If not, there's no time like the present to review your image and ensure you are giving off your best energy.

If you or someone near and dear to you is heading off for the first year of college, moving off-campus, or venturing out into the world as a college grad, some basic kitchen gear—tools, pots, pans, plates, and more—makes an excellent and practical graduation gift. At this stage in life, bang for the buck is of utmost importance, and given that kitchen space can be at a premium (especially when shared with roommates), we did our best to track down the most affordable, durable, and well-designed kitchen essentials we could find. Read on for 21 kitchen basics to help you or your grad whip up some scrambled eggs, bake your favorite chocolate chip cookies, and throw a dinner party for friends.

PREPWARE

Knives

Ah, the transformative power of sharpened steel. Whether you're dealing with fruit, vegetables, herbs, or meat, you're going to need to chop, slice, or dice something at some point. The two most important knives in your arsenal are a good-quality chef's knife to tackle the big stuff and a paring knife that can handle the little things. A good knife should feel comfortable and well balanced in your hand.

Cutting Board

A wooden cutting board will be easy on your blades, keeping your knives in tip-top condition. Dedicated cutting boards—one each for meat, seafood, poultry, and produce—are ideal, but not necessarily practical when space and funds are tight. Just be sure to sanitize your board after working with raw meats or seafood, to avoid cross-contamination.

Tools

A well-stocked kitchen ought to include, at the very least, a vegetable peeler, hand-operated can opener, and a pair of tongs. Tool sets are a great way to ensure you have all the necessary pieces to make your prepwork easier.

Mixing Bowls

You'd be surprised by how much mixing you might do—from pancake batter to vinaigrette—so look for durable bowls that can handle large and small volumes. A bonus: They double as serveware. Designed to be filled to the top and leveled off, dry-ingredient measuring cups are handy not only when you bake but also when making oatmeal or cooking up rice or quinoa. Look for stainless steel, a material that's stain- and odor-resistant.

Measuring Spoons

Measuring spoons have their place in every kitchen. Look for a set that allows you to separate the spoons from the ring and that includes the handy half-tablespoon measurement.

Colander

Pasta is any young adult's dinner staple, given that it's cheap, quick, and easy. But to drain the noodles, you'll want a colander. Although colanders are available in both plastic and metal, we prefer the more durable metal ones. Other uses for a colander: draining cooked vegetables, rinsing salad greens, and making spaetzle. Look for ample perforation for maximum drainage.

Spatula

A spatula is indispensable. How else could you scramble eggs, flip a burger, or successfully remove cookies from a baking sheet without crumbly disappointment? A slotted spatula allows you to leave excess liquid or oil behind.

COOKWARE

Nonstick Saucepan

A nonstick saucepan makes cleanup a breeze. As with any cookware, a comfortable handle is easier to grip and safer to use. A 2-quart pot is perfectly sized for cooking for one (and perhaps two)—whether it's pasta, soup, vegetables, or rice.

Nonstick Frying Pan

You could argue that frying pans are a kitchen's workhorse: You can brown, fry, and sauté with one. Omelets, stir-fries, hamburgers, pancakes, and grilled cheese sandwiches are just some of the foods that can be cooked in a frying pan. The easiest to clean are those with nonstick surfaces, which can be pretty forgiving (especially helpful if you're a beginner cook). Try to get one with a lid so you can braise in it as well as keep food from spattering.

BAKEWARE

Rimmed Baking Sheet

Rimmed baking sheets work not only for baking cookies and doughnuts but for savory dishes as well—roasted vegetables, dinner rolls, spatchcocked chicken, a whole fish, or even a rack of lamb. They're also useful in catching a pie's overflow juices. An accompanying storage lid can help keep cooled baked goods fresh, as well as make transporting them a neater endeavor.

Baking Dishes

Baking dishes make pies and crisps, roast chickens, and all sorts of casseroles—hello, mac 'n' cheese—all possible. They're even useful for serving straight from the oven to the table. Although you can find baking dishes made of ceramic, stoneware, and metal, our preference is for glass, which tends to be relatively inexpensive and allows for easy monitoring of the cooking process. Baking dishes with lids are great for storing leftovers or transporting your masterpiece to a potluck party.

Kitchen Towels

If there's a trick to cooking completely mess-free, we haven't mastered it yet, so thank goodness for kitchen towels! Besides wiping stuff up, towels are great for drying delicate salad greens, covering rising bread, or keeping food wrapped and warm on the table. Plus, towels are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to display your kitchen personality.

Pot Holders and Oven Mitts

They say the mark of a true chef are burns on one's hands and arms, but we're all about safety. Not only will good-quality pot holders and mitts protect your digits and limbs, but they're also impromptu trivets, shielding your counters and tabletop. Silicone pot holders offer high-heat protection, but you might find that heat-proof quilted pot holders are a little more flexible and easier to use.

TABLETOP

Dishware

Now that you can make whatever delicious delicacy you please, you'll need something stylish to serve it on. No eating out of the pot! Though the lowest-priced tableware may not last, durable, good-looking dishware is possible to find without breaking the bank. Buying individual pieces has its advantages, but if you prefer a dinnerware set, look for one that includes at least a dinner plate, salad plate, bowl, and mug.

Flatware

It's time to graduate from disposable utensils, if you haven't already. Buying individual pieces to accommodate your lifestyle can be a little tricky, though, since many sets offer more than what you may really need. One piece of advice: Food tastes better when enjoyed with a friend or loved one, so buy enough for at least two of you.

Drinking Glasses

Drinking straight from a carton or bottle isn't very grown-up, so be sure to get some basic glassware. A combination of taller drinking glasses and shorter tumblers allows you to offer guests a variety of drinks.

Just like the little black dress is a wardrobe classic, a swipe of red lipstick is all you need to always look chic and glamorous. However, no one shade of red lipstick will suit every woman, which is why We've created a how-to guide to finding the right red for your skin tone this holiday season.

FAIR SKIN

Red lippies with an orange hue work best on fair complexions. The hint of orange brightens up your entire look without washing you out. If you want to make things flirty and playful, finish with a gloss. The shine and additional sparkle is perfect for parties.

MEDIUM SKIN

Women with sun-kissed or olive skin tones should reach for a fiery shade -- instead of a reddish brown or a berry -- to suit their warmer complexions. Make a statement! Try a shade with an on-trend, matte finish for a real punch of color.

DEEP SKIN
