The El Golea Oasis

I always enjoy finding the places I see in paintings and see how they compare to what one might see today. El Golea is an exotic oasis town located in central Algeria and is the southern gateway to the Sahara Desert. Some call it the little Paradise, because in the midst of this seemingly desolated area palm trees and desert roses grow.
In the 10th century Berber tribes called this place home and built the city of Gardaya. Below are the remains of the city oasis.

The Gorges of El Kantara Near Biskra

This painting is so full of color that I thought it warrants a closer inspection. The handling is not as refined as a Gerome or Deutsch painting, but it represents the setting in such vivid complementary colors that it's full of life and visual interest.

Biskra is located in north eatern Algiera, close to the Sahara. The area is arid and there are two large lakes, Melhir and Merouane that lie almost below sea level. This could be the setting for this painting.

Note the chromatic color choices and impasto brush strokes the artist has used in the foreground.

Some of the figures have nice facial features and others are just hinted at.

Here is the entire painting. Unfortunately I do not know it's size, but I am guessing it must be large.

A Party at the Sweet Waters of the Bosphorus

This painting has such a soft feel about it and reminds me of vintage postcards. The artist has captured a family out on a picnic in a garden close to the Bosphorus. I find it interesting that the waterfront is kept in the same value tones as the grass area. The similar tones make this a very calm and peaceful setting even though the scene itself is filled with people engaged in different activities.

The Pottery Workshop

Artist who allow the viewer a to explore a painting interest me the most. In this pottery workshop not only do we get to see the artist at work, but we get to see all sorts of wares he has created from finished pieces to those in progress.

The vase with the drooping poppy is an interesting addition, placed entirely in the center I can only assume that it means something to the artist and is a symbol whose meaning we do not know and can only guess at. Poppies can mean loyalty in faith, but it stills leaves the true intent of the message an enigma.

Exploring the workshop further the artist shows his ability of rendering different textures - clay vessels a straw baskets, copper and wood are painted with great detail.

Every section of this painting seems to be a still life in itself. In a way it also serves as a way to document the items that were common during the era that the artist had observed them while travelling to Tangiers.

Depicting an artisan at work is a nice tribute from one artist to another and Discart did a wonderful job capturing this individual as he concentrates on the task at hand.

Bedouins in the Desert

This is a rather large painting and as a photographic reproduction looses a lot of it's impact. When looking at sections in detail Giradet's superb handling of the paint can be better observed. For example note how he used a very chromatic orange both on the ground and on the woman's cheek to give us a feeling of the intense heat generated by the camp fire.

Here he livens up a bland desert which usually is in muted tones by introducing blues orange and yellow. I love it when sections of a painting can almost be a painting in themselves. This landscape setting is anything but boring and catches our attention by the clever manipulation of colors.

As a fine figurative painter the figures are painted solid but not over worked. It is almost as if the artist intended to impress us with an overall feel of what a moment at a campsite of a Bedouin family would be like, rather than having us be enamored with the figures themselves.

I spotted this beautifully rendered piece via Gandalf's Gallery and got very excited, since I have not seen this Gerome painting before. An unfinished painting it shows the rough drawing beneath the umber wash in. I absolutely love this stage, where it is clearly apparent that the viewer is looking at a work in progress, yet sees the figure almost photorealistic.
Gerome started by making a rough pencil outline and then did a very light Umber color wash in to establish the light and shadow areas of the scene. This piece looks like a study, where he clearly was more concerned with the figure rather than the background, which most likely was worked out later. ★Thank you for Visiting!★ ~ Return to Website ~ Return to Blog

When I lived in Iran we would often go to the bazaar and spend time at the stores of rug merchants. I loved seeing how these big and heavy Persian rugs would be rolled out for visitors to inspect. The handlers made it always look so effortlessly.

While the bargaining was underway, we would often sip tea and eat fresh sweets, making the whole experience a lot of fun. To this day, I love going into bazaars and searching out carpet merchants. The colors of the carpets are so vibrant and the intricate designs always amazing.

The Circassian Guards

Stanislaus was born in Poland and received his formal art training at the Fine Arts Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was one of Jean Leone Gerome's pupils, where he most likely received first hand exposure to Orientalist subject matter.

He also worked as an attache at the Court of Sultan Abdulaziz in Turkey, where he saw middle eastern architectural elements first hand. Many of his paintings done in oil or water color depict historical themes and the people of Turkey.

In this painting the artist chose to paint two Circassian guards who wear the traditional fur trimmed hats and long coats associated as their uniform. The attention to detail is lovely, but what I find most interesting is that the artist chose to highlight the background, rather than place the first figure in a more brightly lit space.

Both men are meant to be guards, yet only one of them - the younger has a proud stance and is holding or wearing all his weapons. The older man in the background seems to have a more resigned stance and seems to look out at the viewer rather than at his companion.

It is an intriguing composition and I wonder what the artist's message was.
