My Back-To-School Shopping List

I'm about the start my 3rd year in university soon and I'm still wearing clothes from my 1st year. Clearly, I've done a lot of growing and my young and naive clothes from first year no longer represent who I am. Its time for a wardrobe makeover! I want to create bold,chic yet regale and sophisticated look! Lets call this Project Makeover. Original, I know. I don't have the financial means to just throw away all my clothes and buy a brand new wardrobe.So the key to making this happen is investing in strategic staples to give life to my old clothes.

My new style inspirations: Olivia Palermo, Joanna Hillman, The Sartorialist and my close friends at my university. What I love about "The City Villain" Olivia Palermo and Senior Fashion Market Editor of Harper Bazaar Joanna Hillman is their modern spin on Diana Vreeland's classic NY chic style. There was a time where I held Blair Waldorf and Lauren Conrad as my style icons; but I now yearn to create a feminine future powerhouse/ superwoman look. If I am going to save the world one day, I must start looking the part!

Styles I want to try: Vintage Varsity, Androgyny, New York City Chic and Trends.

I'm really loving the direction Roots is taking their clothing! Their new Fall 2012 collection is coined "Vintage Varsity" and who knows leather satchels, Letterman jackets and athletic chic better than Roots! A bit on the pricier side but definitely quality clothing which will last a few seasons! Its perfect university-wear. I am on the hunt for inexpensive letterman jackets and leather satchels! Let me know if you come across some!

Androgyny: Men's clothing is one my biggest sources of style inspiration. I love bowties, blazers and collared shirts. I'm looking to add a bit of Hilary Clinton and Tilda Swinton's flare into my wardrobe.

New York Chic: People do fashion differently in New York. Nobody in Toronto understands my love for leaopard print,colourblocking, monochromatic black outfits, leather jackets in the summer and menswear. I shall draw style inspiration from the streets of New york a la The Sartorialist!

Trends I'm to scared to but am dying to try: Sheers, nudes, neutrals and lace!

Spring/Summer 2012- Minimalism vs Maximalism Part 2

Maximalism. I am not sure whether it is a real word regardless we can assume that it is derived from the word "maximum" which stands for "the greatest quantity or amount possible, assignable,allowable, etc." (Dictionary.com).

In other words, a maximalist outfit is free spirited, LOUD and most of all non-conformist. D&G, Prada and Just Cavalli are few of the many designers embracing maximalism this season and are breaking all the rules when it comes to mixing prints, over-accessorizing and structural exaggeration.

1. Mixing Prints: The funnest way to create a maximalist look. No rules apply. However, if you are a bit hesitant here are a few tips:

Isolate the prints to 2 main parts of your outfit aka the bottom, the top or accessories. This way your prints will be neatly organized and not conflict. Like this. For example, floral overalls on top of a zebra print shirt...clear conflict in upper torso and hence NOT CUTE.
Stick to a safe number of different prints. Don't have a bajillion prints in your outfit or else you'll look crazy; I like to keep it at only 2 prints.

2. Over-Accessorizing: If you are hesitant to mix prints, then a safer way to try maximalism would be to use your accessories to make a statement Think bright neon or citrus jewelry, bold statement pieces and crazy hair accessories. Latest jewelry trends on the runways include:

Doubling cuffing: wearing the same style bracelet on both hands or doubling the same cuff on the same arm
Tassels, lace and embellishments
Bold statement necklaces: Either this or bold earrings. Don't wear both at the same time to avoid excessive display of gaudiness.
"Edgy Motif Jewelry": aka symoblic jewelry like turtles, gemstones, snakes etc.

3.Structural Exaggeration: Poofy shoulders, shoulderpads, ruffles, asymmetrical, excessive pleating, ruching, pointy hips,massive one shoulder bows etc. Purchase a dress,` blouse or blazer/jacket which exaggerates the proportions of your body. Go GAGA. Some helpful tips:

Once again strategically use a clothing item to exaggerate only ONE part of your body. the exaggeration is once again isolated. I like to buy poofy shouldered dresses and blazers because they create a bold and powerful posture. Instant confidence boost!
Go hardcore or go home. Mix exaggerated structures with fierce hair,accesories and shoes not simpletons!

I love maximalism but it can be deafening, so the key to pulling off a noisy look is personality and confidence. In a maximalist outfit, don't sulk and hover in dark corners in fear of attention; it will defeat the purpose of your outfit!

Spring 2011-Minimalists vs Maximalists (Part 1)

This Spring be witness to a battle of the ages between minimalists and maximalists. The spring oracles of the Runway Deities have revealed two very conflicting prophecies: 1)Loud prints, mismatched patterns and body exaggerations, and 2)Clean Cuts, structured garments and monochromatic outfits.
This blog post is for the minimalists and will teach you how to rework your wardrobe to construct minimalist outfits. The next blog post will be just for the maximalists.

Regal. Bold. Structured. That is the tenor of minimalist outfits. If you are sick of the florals and ruffles in your spring/summer wardrobe,try the minimalist trend. It never goes out of fashion, is work appropriate and is a great break from the loud prints of spring 2011.In fashion land, the term minimalism is applied to clothing which encapsulates only the essentials of an outfit.An item which is just enough or meets the very basic functions of the item. The basics of a clothing item is its carbon copy structure, base colour and its hemlines.

2 easy ways to create a minimalistic look are: 1)Monochromatic and 2) Colour Blocking.

1) Monochromatic. To achieve the sophistication of minimalistic attire, include in an outfit only the tones or shades of one color. When it comes to monochromatic looks, the most easy color palette to work with is either neutrals or simply black. This is because it is easy to mix and match neutrals while maintaining the overall monochromatic theme.Once you have found a few items of clothing in your wardrobe of the same color, the next step is to make sure they have minimal detailing and a solid structure. Think clean lines, stiff structure(no exaggerations) and no loud prints.
***If you cannot find clothing with minimal detailing then simply stick to the monochromatic law of one color and your outfit will still be in the least sense minimal.

Only include in your look the bare essentials of an outfit. So ask yourself, do I really need this? Is this item extra? So leave out unnecessary accessories. Minimalistic outfits are low-maintenance.

2) Color Blocking
Color blocking can be in the tool kits of both minimalists and maximalists. But if you are employing it to create a minimalist outfit, stick to a minimal amount of colors and minimal detailing. What makes the outfit minimalistic is that it appears bold through the strategic minimal use of color. Unlike monochromatic looks which aim for one color, 2-3 basic colored items with minimal detailing and solid structures are used to create a bold look. Both techniques employ the minimal use of color to create a bold tenor.

The purpose of color blocking is to shock and awe; it can be quite overwhelming at first, so before diving right into neons and pastels, try creating outfits based on fixed color palettes (like the ones used for carpets and curtains) or themes (like monochromatic, rainforest, desert etc.). The coherency of a color blocked outfit comes from its incoherency so do not worry about mismatching colors. The boldness of the outfit rests in its nonconformance to traditional color combinations.

Some tips for first time color blockers:
1) Keep the amount of colors between 2-3
2) Choose items with minimal detailing
3) Clothing item should not have a print it should be a bold, basic color
4) Keep accessories to a minimum. Let the colors in the clothes speak for themselves

You know what comes with Spring? SPRING FASHION, COLOURS and ACCESSORIES. Spring is my favourite time of the year! I love bright outfits, makeup and accessories. The next few posts on Outfit Maker will be about Spring 2011 fashion trends and style tips. Lets start off this Spring welcoming with BRIGHT and BUBBLY nail art!

This season I intend on rocking bright crazy neon colours to beat out the chronic winter blues of Canadian Winters. Stylish Winter Outfits Part 2: Faux Fur

Faux fur is all over the runways and editorials and I realized that it is a fabulous alternative to the winter coat! As you read in Stylish Winter Outfits Part 1, it is quite difficult to reconcile fashion with function in winter. I recently purchased a faux fur cheetah vest from Forever 21 for $40 and this has been by far my best winter purchase yet! I've been on the hunt for cheetah printed items for quite a while now and found the perfect one with a leather belt. Trying on cheetah print for the first time is seriously one of the best feelings ever! Its daring, bold and definitely eye catching. Its so not me but that's what I love about it!

Add some faux fur coats, vests, accessories, ponchos and boots to your winter wardrobe!

Faux Fur 411

1) Its very easy to overdo the faux fur look. So to avoid looking like Buffalo Bill, a winter outfit can only have 1 huge faux fur item like a coat or a vest OR only a couple of faux fur accessories and boots with no major item like a coat.

2) Stick with brown, cheetah print or grey prints and not pinks and whites when shopping for Faux fur items to avoid looking cheap.

3) Brown,black, grey and denim will always look good with faux fur.

4)Minimalistic interior. Pretty please monochromatic with a faux fur on top.

5) For maximum warmth, pair the faux fur coat/west with a sweater dress, wool stockings,chunky black scarf and a cute hat or headband!

6) Faux fur items have the potential to make one look chunky, so to avoid looking like a rolling ball of fur, pair the faux fur coat/vest with a skinny belt and skinny trousers OR find a faux fur item which comes with a tie around waist belt.

Here are some ways to create stylish and warm winter outfits with the help of faux fur:

1) The Vest
Try to find one with a waist tie or belt in order to make sure the chunkiness of the fur does not overpower you. To not deafen the loudness of the vest, wear a monochromatic interior. Also, for a more stylish look, add in a pair of your favourite tights/stockings. The outfit underneath doesn't have to be complete if you do not plan on taking off the vest; it can be a turtleneck with tights or a ton of layers and a ton of tights. The key is to layer so you can stay warm and stylish. Also, try to find a long vest, if not then you probably shouldn't wear it as is in the winter season.

2) The Coat. The faux fur coat speaks for itself so don't interrupt its speech with other faux fur items or loud accessories. Let it sit still on a a minimalistic canvas.I would pair it with riding boots or over the knee leather boots.

4) If you are too scared to try out a faux fur item, my recommendation is to take baby steps or to enjoy it in small doses. Accessories, boots and handbags come in faux fur too!

Instant Fashion: Boyfriend/Chambray Denim Shirt

The Western Chambray Denim shirt aka the Boyfriend Denim shirt is usually dropped by female shoppers in the last minute because it just is so difficult to style! But it can definitely be styled to create a diverse array of outfits.The Boyfriend Denim Shirt can be found at Old Navy, American Eagle, Eddie Bauer and definitely vintage stores.

Styling Tips:
1) Don't fear denim on denim. Rule of thumb: different shades of denim or different washes and texture.
2) Denim + camel tone = Trend
3)Try to find one that is fitted because if it is too baggy it will look very messy and will overpower the shirt.
4) Can't go wrong with black,khaki and neutrals.
5) Try not to wear shirt as is. Style it by rolling up the sleeves, belts, layering and accessories.
6)Looks great worn on top of casual dresses with skinny belt on top.

1) Forever Feminine: Try pairing it with a floral printed romper, dress or blouse. Add a skinny belt on top and fold the sleeves of the shirt to complete the look.

2) Sporty. Think Kristen Stewart. The shirt itself is very casual so it could be the perfect addition to you gym outfit. Wear it on top and not underneath the gym gear. Its all about layering.

3) Comfy and Cozy. Flats, cotton and khaki. That is all.

4) Girl next door. Sweet and successful in other words. Chambray shirts under camel blazers are all over the runways. Give this look a try at the next corporate event.

5) Rocker Chic. This one's easy to create with the chambray shirt. Think Miley Cyrus. The bigger and torn up the denim shirt the better. Pair it with eccentric accessories.

6) Avant Garde. Pair with dresses with LOUD prints and crazy shoes. Top it off with a belt and cuffed sleeves. Black harem pants would also look great with the chambray shirt tucked in with a skinny belt.

Stylish Winter Outfits (Just add Poncho)

Problem: In Canada, we have longer and colder winters than other countries but that does not necessarily mean that only ugly winter clothing can keep us warm. My goal for the next 3 months is to figure out how to dress warm without wearing a winter coat. I hate wearing a winter coat everyday to school. Its like repeating an outfit every single day. I do own a bunch of coats but I hate hiding my outfits under them!

Solution: PONCHOS

Ponchos

Ponchos are a great alternative to the winter coat. To maximize their ultimate warmth potential, they need to be paired with long gloves, a chunky scarf (wool), tons of layering underneath with sweaters or shirts and thermals and woolen tights. As for the footwear, depends on the forecast. If its snowy,slippery and wet think rugged boots or heels with grips.Don't forget cute headwear!

Poncho Tips:
1) Long gloves, Thermal stockings, knitted leggings and chunky scarves are a MUST for warmth!
2)Poncho must be mid thigh length at least to make sure it can fight off gusty winds and keep you warm.
3) COLOUR is always a plus in the winter.
4)Hidden Internal Layering: add camisole and thin shirt under everything!
5)Hot headwear. Literally.See below diagrams.
Tip: Use headband ear warmer as neckwarmer if scarves don't match poncho.

A lot of people are hesitant to try out this trend because its colour palette of mostly brown with dashes of exotic shades is hard to mix and match.So let's keep it simple. Crucial elements of the Desert Rose trend include: 1) the Camel tone 2) Exotic or Wooden jewelry and 3) Shades of Brown. Follow this trend guide to help you create outfits based on this trend. You can also try out this trend below!

How to work with the Camel Tone (not camel toe)

For a minimalistic look pair a camel toned item with well structured items in nude and neutral shades. You can also never go wrong with black.
Monochromatic: Color yourself camel. Most if not all of your outfit's items should be of a camel tone to create a monochromatic look. I like to break the rules when rocking a monochromatic look by hiding a colourful accessory like a hairclip or a bracelet somewhere in my outfit.
Exotic: Spice up your camel toned item with one other colour.For example, you can pair camel tone pants with a red blouse.
Earthly: The Camel tone always looks great with earth shades like deep greens, browns and brick red.
Casual: Mix with denim. Could be a blouse, shorts, skinny jeans, regardless denim are meant to be together.

From Fug to Fierce: Christmas Sweaters

Tis the season for dorky sweaters from the elderly. Turn your frown upside down because there are ways to strategically style this sweater to create a vintage "I'm so cool I make dorky things like this sweater look cool" look. Here are a few ways you can turn your Christmas themed sweater from fug to fierce!

You could either:

1) Go for the "Badass in the Christmas Sweater" Look.

All you need is a pair of black boots, demonic accessories with skulls preferably, an outlandish winter hat and a pair of rugged skinny jeans or ripped tights. You can strategically use the sweater as the irony in your all black attire. This way you don't have to sacrifice your inner rock diva when celebrating christmas.

3) The Hipster in December Look. Or you could just wear tights as is with your sweater. Don't forget your Dr.Martens and fake mustache necklace!

4) The All-American Girl. You aka the "I have a family and a quarterback bf to spend Christmas with" look. Wear a collared shirt under your christmas sweater roll up the sleeves and have the cuffs as the collared shirt. Pair that with either boyfriend jeans, skinny Levis or bellbottoms.A rugged bomber jacket and comfy footwear like Uggs would definitely complete the look. Brownie points if you match your outfit with winter accessories!

Hey ladies!

I want to do something new today. I'm going to start a segment called "Beauty around the World" in which I and other guest bloggers will share with you their culture's beauty secrets! If you are interested in contributing to this segment email me at theoutfitmaker@yahoo.com ! I look forward to learning about your culture!

In today's post, I will share with you some beauty secrets of South Asia: Henna, Amla Oil, Ubtan, Multani Mitti and Kajal.

HENNA
Henna (Mehndi) is a traditional dye used by the ancients of South Asia to dye skin, hair and nails. It is also used as a deep conditioning system by many. Many of my aunts use it and their hair feels like SILK. The only issue with Henna is that it darkens your hair because it is a natural dye. If you want to dye your hair a deep auburn or a deep red without chemicals HENNA IS THE WAY TO GO! Ask your hair stylist if they do Henna treatments. If not, you can buy some at your local Indian store. MAKE sure to do RESEARCH before you try the product.

Its also a great alternative for Tattoos! Ask around your neighborhood for Henna Artists! A temporary Henna tattoo costs around $5.

Look out for Shampoos, oils and conditioners with Henna Extract to keep your hair soft and shiny!

Amla Oil

Amla Oil has resurrected my hair from the dead. It is made from Indian Gooseberry and other good-for-your-hair herbs like Henna extract and almond oil! The mixture is a natural deep conditioner which hydrates and strengthens your hair follicles to prevent hair loss and premature graying. The only problem with it is that the smell is really strong! If you can endure the smell for a few days, I strongly recommend this product! Other oils which are extremely beneficial for hair and mind healthy are Olive Oil, Mustard Oil, Coconut Oil and Almond Oil. I've tried all of them, but I find the Amla Oil to be the best one.

Ubtan

Ubtan is another ancient skin cleanser which is solely used for beautifying the skin. This passage from this fabulous article says it all,

"As a beauty aid, Curcumin - the alkaloidal content of the main ingredient of Ubtan, Turmeric prevents and cures pigmentation, maintains the PH balance and makes the skin glow. Santalol in Sandal¬wood helps in inhibiting the growth of micro-organisms and preventing skin infections. The woody fibre & Vitamin C in Bengal gram open the blocked pores, maintain the secretions from glands and bleach the sun freckles. Due to its Sandalwood contents, 'Ubtan' acts as an astringent and helps to tighten the pores. The crocetin contents of Saffron add to the lustre of the skin and make it glow. The rough nature of Bengal gram powder cleanses it by removing the dead infected parts of the skin. It is also used to promote healing of the cracked & inflamed skin"

Procedure: Mix with either Rose Water, A drop of Lemon or milk and apply on to face like a mask. Then massage for 10-15 minutes.

....and here's the best part is that it should cost about $3 at your local Indian grocery store!

Multani Mitti

Multani Mitti, also known as Fuller's Earth, is an amazing clay mask when mixed with rose water. It cleans pores and tightens skin! It also lightens acne scars, decreases skin pigmentation. You can also use it as a dry shampoo!

Procedure: Mix powder with water or rose water and apply mask to face and wait till it dries completely before taking it off.

NOTE: It really dries out your skin, so be sure to apply a good moisturizer afterwards.

Out of my 2 sisters, my youngest sister did not approve of this product. She found it surfaced new pimples and did not help her as much as the Ubtan. I, on the other hand, think it really tightened my skin and eliminated my pores. Try out the product once and see if its right for you. Its a natural product so don't worry about scary chemical burns or whatnot.

DID YOU KNOW?T Multani Mitti is used to revamp and cleanse the marble of the Taj Mahal. A product fit for royalty! I got Multani Mitti for $3 at my local Indian Grocery Store. Money well spent!

Kajal

Kajal, also known as eye coal or Kohl, is an amazing "ancient eye cosmetic" product used to define and highlight the eyes. It was used by the Queens of Egypt, the Sultanas of the Middle East and the Begums of South Asia. I love it so much because with the help of Kajal, you really don't have to do anything else on your face to look fierce! It also can be used to create the PERFECT smokey eye! Jack Sparrow also wears a lot of Kajal.

Sephora and MAC both have their own bootleg versions of Kajal called Eye Coal Sticks. They sell for about $18. I'm sure your local South Asian store will have kajal eyeliner for less than $10.

Back to School Must Haves

1) Go-To Boots. Invest in a pair of ankle booties or slouched casual boots which you can literally wear with any outfit. They have the magic ability to transform any outfit from "I'm a lazy student running late" to " WALK WALK Fashion Baby." Make sure the boots are comfortable and easy to walk in. My biggest mistake in my first year was buying UNCOMFORTABLE cowboy boots. I fell on the streetcar, the subway, on the road and in a lecture hall of course! Soooo cute right!I got my go-to boots this year from StyleSense for $129.99. A bit pricy but SO worth it! I'll post some pics of all my latest purchases in my next post :)

2)Jeggings are a student's best friend! They don't freeze your legs in the winter and they definitely dont rash-ify your legs when your running to your lecture to hand in an assignment. They also are very comfortable and can be used as tights! TIP: make sure to buy a pair which does not give the illusion of a camel toe. The goal is to find a pair which has a mock "button and zipper" and "pockets" on the top to minimize the "leggings" look. I got me a pair from Stitches for $20.00 but now they are on sale for 12 dollars at the Eaton Centre.

3) A Headband is like concealer for hair. It covers up all the flaws, frizz and flyaways on your off-days.

4)Trench Coat/Boyfriend Blazer/Leather Jacket. Anything which will keep you warm and looking fashionable in the Fall! I love Fall because ugly winter jackets/boots/mittens/snowpants do not come in the way of me and my fashion! Its the perfect time to show off sweater dresses and "warm" garments! Plus you can strategically use these items to create different looks such as the "Brit Baby with the trench coat", "the badass" with the leather jacket, the Bf Blazer for the "Private School Chic" look.

5) A cute hoodie for exam and essay season. Check out this post about different ways to style a hoodie for tips: http://theoutfitmaker.blogspot.com/2010/06/different-ways-to-style-hoodie.html . I think that Garage has great fitted hoodies which come in a variety of cute and unique colours.

6)Combat Boots will also come in handy on days where you have to be tough; when the weather's tough; or even when you just want to LOOK tough.

7)Cardigan. I just bought my first ever cardigan last week from Forever 21! Its nautical themed and is the perfect length AND its mighty comfy! I already recieved compliments on it from randoms TWICE.The beauty about cardigans is that they are so versatile and can be worn with ANYTHING to create a down to earth look.

8) Sportswear. There's a new trend taking over runways: Sportswear. Letterman Jackets, Loose Hoodies, Track pants and jerseys have all suddenly become CHIC. So make it a back to school goal to try out this trend! Other dying but not DEAD trends to milk before they dry are DENIM and MILITARY.

9) A pair of shades are the perfect ending to a great outfit. I personally don't like sunglasses because they scream pretentious in some occasions. Just don't ever wear them when inside or when there isn't any sun to shield you eyes from.

10) A Structured Purse with alot of pockets and storage space is the ideal bag for school. If it can hold your laptop then its a must have!

11) Scarves, Leggings and a Beenie are all basic Emergency items. Scarves cover up inappropriate necklines,"marks on neck" and are great for keeping warm in the fall. Leggings are great transition pieces which can be worn with summer dresses in the fall. A beenie or a slouchie hat can protect hair from messing up in the wind or even hide untidy hair from the world.

Back to School Special: Part One First Year Survival Guide

Dear Future First Year University Students,

I have received so many lovely emails at theoutfitmaker@yahoo.com. I noticed that many of my readers will be starting University this year and find all my university talk helpful.

So if its alright with you I would like to do a TWO PART Back to School Special. In the first post I will share with you my First Year experience and hopefully prevent you from making the same mistakes I made. The second part will be the fashion portion of this special about back to school must haves and trends!

Part One: First Year Survival Guide

1)The key to being successful in your first year is to embrace change and view change as a positive element of life. And I did the exact opposite. I was so busy trying to preserve who I was before University that I subconsciously labelled change as negative. Keep a journal with you and monitor all kinds of change and list the pros and cons of each. Change is good in moderation. Change isn’t about constructing a new being, it’s about making renovations and upgrading who you already are. So types of possible changes to monitor: mood, body weight, skin change, sleeping habits, eating habits, friends etc. Learn to spot the differences between healthy and unhealthy change.

2) Time Management and Goal Setting is the only thing between you and an impressive 4.0 GPA. One thing I did really well in my first year was manage my time! Thanks to calendars, watches and my smart phone I came out of my Freshman year with a 3.7 GPA. Not bad, but not great. What stopped me from getting that 4.0 is PROCRASTINATION. I would sit down to “study” or write an essay for 5 hours and I would realize that 90 percent of the time I did nothing but procrastinate! Procrastination is a biotch which comes in many forms. My advice is to set aside fixed times to complete tasks as opposed to sitting around for hours aimlessly trying completing one task. Check out these procrastination killers which helped me beat this fatal habit!

Make a To-Do list and assign tasks priority levels and due dates. Before starting your first year set goals like the GPA you want, the social scene you desire etc. This way you will not be wandering aimlessly for the next 8 months. You are a man/woman with a mission!

TIP: Buy a GIGANTIC CALENDAR. Mark on it all readings, assignments and tasks to be completed according to all of your syllabi. This way everything is in your sight and you will never miss a deadline!

3)Skincare. Keep in your purse moisturizer, foundation and some fruits! Trust me the air of lecture halls is like that of one's last breath: wheezy and dry. So the moisturizer will come handy! No pun in intended. Foundation will also help during exam season when Mr and Mrs Zits decide to vacation on your face. Unviersity students' faces are like the Bahamas for zits during exam season. A consistent intake of fruits will cleanse your body of toxins and keep u energized throughout the 3 hour lectures.

4)Hygiene. The beauty about university is that it is rare to see the same people every day. Therefore you can get away with wearing outfits two or three times a week. I got away with wearing the same pants all week during exam season. Bathing also becomes a nuisance when time is of the essence. Thats why Dry Shampoo products are a student’s best friend. Also be sure to check out these easy and comfy exam season outfits.

5) On the Go Bag. In your everyday bag/purse/briefcase you should carry the following essential on the go items: Pen and small notebook, Travel coffee cup (can be filled at local cafes), hand sanitizer, campus map, phone and agenda.

6) A stapler! This may seem stupid but when you realize that you have to hand in your assignment in lecture or in tutorial and the TA or professor doesn't have a stapler attached to his leg AND you cant run to the nearest library, you will realize the importance of owning your own stapler. Big or small make sure to invest in one. I can remember how many papers I handed in unstapled under the assumption the TA will always have one like my high school teacher always did.

7) Friends. Post secondary institutions always have a diverse array of people and personalities. The benefit of this environment is being able to learn and gain many new experiences. There is nothing wrong with developing healthy social habits, but if Heroine Harry, Party Patty and Drunkard Danny are getting in the way of your priorities and sense of self you need to question who you are surrounding yourself with.

8) University Services. Universities offer so many beneficial services which you should take an advantage of to maximize your first year experience. Whether you are a genius or a dunce, writing centers will improve your writing! So try to book bi-weekly appointment with your college's writing centres! Other services most universities have are: therapists, depression centers, counsellors, walk home (people escort you to your residence or location after night classes) and many more!

9) Studying Tips:
-Take meticolous notes and filter them before exam time for essential information.
-Have a study party for 2-3 people. Don't invite Party Patty or Chatty Cathy.
-Highlighters and sticky notes always come in handy
-identifying an argument, its structure, its rejections etc. learn texts from the inside and out so you can talk about them comfortably during exams
-Memory Stacking. Learn info A, then Info B. Repeat Info A and B and learn info C. Repeat info A, B and C and learn D.

10) Fake it till you make it. Confidence and a positive attitude will keep you chuggin through first year ruts. I always say fake it till you make it because if you act confident and exude all the mannerisms of a confident and positive person, then you will become a confident and positive person. I believe mental and emotional states can be cultivated via physical states. So start fakin it people.

Eddie Bauer Classic Trench Coat

A classic trench coat has been on my wishlist ever since I saw Emma Watson rocking the Classic Burberry Trench. The only problem was that Burberry trench coats can cost anywhere from $800-4000 and as a student I would rather spend my money on tuition or put it in my "One day I'll go to Spain fund."

The other day I was enjoying the Uruguay vs France game when SUDDENLY my dad comes home with A FABULOUS TRENCH COAT FROM EDDIE BAUER.

The only difference between the two trenches:

Amazing price                Scary ...I cannot afford right now price

I'm sure in the long run the Burberry trench could have lasted a lifetime but what gives Eddie the win is the price and practicality!

The original price of the Eddie Bauer Classic Trench was $149.00. My father got it for.... $30.00. I guess bargain hunting runs in my genes!

At first sight, I immediately fell in love with the product because I already was in love with the idea of a trench coat. Like most Eddie Bauer items, this coat is very practical and will actually protect me from the rain. The material is sturdy, the stitching is first-class and the sizing is perfect.

Okay the sizing is a bit off for me because I'm so tiny. The coat is a small and seems to be built for taller women. I'm 5'1 and thus the coat is bit long ...it's right below my knees. Its not bad for a coat lentgh though and i will defintiely be investing in a pair of sleek black heeled boots to ROCK THIS TRENCH!

Another con is the fit. It is flattering but it doesn't do for a woman's silhouette what a Burberry coat can.

But you know what, I am going to call this coat: The Temp.

It will be my Trench Coat until I can afford a Burberry Trench Coat. I promise to treat it like I would any other clothing item.

"It's not such a beautiful game if you're a woman" By Bryony Gordon

I recently came across an article online called "It's not such a beautiful game if you're a woman" by Bryony Gordon. In a nutshell, she argues that women should "know their footballing limits." She states that football is the"the simplest sport of the lot" and that "we [women] are still not allowed" to understand" because it is the "last bastion of masculinity."

First of all, "we women" were not allowed to share the workplace with men either because idiots like her chose to draw a line between the genders. If it wasn't for WOMEN diminishing this line, she would be out of a job. Gender divisions need to be BROKEN not embraced. Restricting women from participating in a certain act based on their gender orientation is the epitome of discrimination and inequality. Even promoting such a concept is disgusting because it not only caters to the minds of sexists, but it also has the ability to foster sexist thinking.

Words have power and because of this article a girl out there will avoid football to secure a feminine status in her society and a potential male reader could view other female football fans as just "trying to be one of the lads"

What pissed me off even more was that she had the audacity to place females against females. She made the assumption that female football fans are hostile towards other female fans because they think that girls who like football are just "trying to be one of the lads."

I, as a female football fan, proudly embrace other female football fans. Take a look at my twitter, most of my friends are female FC Barcelona fans.

Women need to be united not divided in order to achieve equality. Its sad that women like her bring us back two steps after years of long strides.

And another thing: there is more to football than the cute boys. I mean sure Ronaldo is stunning and Kaka is the perfect man; but their hotness is not going to influence me in any manner. I hate Ronaldo as a player and I am the biggest Real Madrid and Brazil hater. If a guy on a team I like is gorgeous, such as Messi or Xavi, then that is a plus not a condition for me liking the team.

I accept the fact that there are women who synthetically like the sport in order to gain attention of men; but this trait or habit should NOT only be attributes to WOMEN. MEN ARE BANDWAGONNERS TOO!

As a matter of fact, I know more bandwagon-ing men than I do bandwagon-ing women.

Some more smart talk:

The author assumes the following things:

1) Women only like the sport to get along with the guys (Yeah and the only reason I like Louboutins is because a man made them and it will get the attention of boys...NOT)

2)Liking football is a masculine trait and football is a masculine sport (MEN ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO PLAY football. Ever heard of a women's league)

3) That women take a passive role in viewing football in a male dominated crowd (I am the one at parties explaining football to men and I know many men who need to be enlightened)

Upon these implied assumptions (for which she offers NO evidence other than her biased and backwards beliefs) she bases her conclusion that "Its not such a beautiful game if you're a women." This error in reasoning not only renders her argument fallacious but also useless.

What do you readers think? Is football a Men's-only thing? Is she right to draw such gender divisions? by doing so is she promoting equality?

**I do acknowledge the fact that everyone has a right to their opinion and I absolutely respect opinions when they are grounded in evidence.

"Well, tribal had it's moment last summer, and from then on it's come back it slightly more diluted forms. A lot of maxi dresses feature tribal prints, and they're very fashionable right now. The bad things about african style prints, is that they're often quite 'loud', so not so good for work ect. Most people, such as myself, would prefer a more subtle floral print that a wood-block esque african print. Overall, I like some tribal inspired peices, but you have to be careful with what you are wearing said peices with.
