Special Message from YDA President Quentin Wathum-Ocama

Dear Young Democrats and Supporters, 

As I write this message, I sit on a train back to the Twin Cities from a convention that can simply be described as historic. Over the past few days, we’ve witnessed what will be one of the most consequential and transformational moments in our party’s history. While witnessing Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz accept our party’s nomination is energizing in its own right, what excites me even more is the significant role that so many young delegates played at the forefront of this convention. 

So many Young Democrats made the case to media outlets across the nation for why America must elect the Harris-Walz ticket. From exuding enthusiasm on the convention floor to answering hitting questions with reporters, young Democrats helped showcase how fired up we all are to turn the page on the chaos of the Trump presidency and move America in an exciting and bold new direction. 

In this special edition of our YDA newsletter, you’ll find some selected highlighted articles and images of Young Democrat delegates at the Democratic National Convention. From local to national and even international news, our members represented our members with thoughtfulness, energy, and excitement. 

While we leave this convention energized and excited, it is also important to realize that there is so much work we must continue to do, not just to turn out our voters but to bring young people back to our party after nearly a year of fractious politics. It will be hard, but with clear, intentional, and maybe even difficult conversations, I believe we can truly unite our party and move America forward.  That’s why I truly look forward to continuing to work with you over the next 73 days as we make history this November and bring this great nation together— I am so proud to be in this fight with you.

An Axios poll shows that Ms Harris is “significantly more popular among America’s youngest voters”.

And her selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz appears to have helped.

“The day that Governor Walz was added for the ticket one of my best friends texted me, and she was like, Is this what hope feels like?” Kati Durken, the vice president of Young Democrats for America, told The National outside a gathering of young delegates.

Blake Robinson, the Young Democrats of Georgia’s rural caucus chair, is another delegate who supports a ceasefire.

He believes Ms Harris can serve as a bridge in peacebuilding between Israelis and Palestinians, emphasising that the Vice President has “called for a ceasefire multiple times”.

“We should look at President Harris as the person that’s going to go in there and say that enough is enough … she knows how to work through diversity, and work through identities,” he told The National.

The Young Democrats of America were excited to learn of Vice President Kamala Harris’ decision to select Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her 2024 running mate. 

Throughout his time in office, Walz has routinely fought to better the lives of Minnesotans— providing universal school meals, paid family leave, red flag gun laws, legalization of marijuana, and environmental protections. 

In 2023, Walz codified reproductive healthcare as a “fundamental right” in Minnesota by signing the Protect Reproductive Options Act into law. During his time in office, he also signed many LGBTQ+ protection bills into law, including the lifesaving “Trans Refuge” bill.

In the words of the Minnesota Young DFL president and national Young Democrats of America President Quentin Wathum-Ocama: 

“Governor Walz has nearly two decades of critical government experience, first as congressman and now as a two term governor who has presided over one of the most consequential and progressive legislative sessions in Minnesota history. His selection sends a clear message that a Harris-Walz administration is ready to deliver for the American people on day one.”

We, the Young Democrats of America, could not be more enthusiastic with Vice President Harris’ decision. We look forward to electing Harris and Walz to their respective offices in November 2024.

Kamala Harris Inspires Hope Amon Young Democrats

Youth voter groups report record fundraising, signups since Harris entered race

Garrett Readling, communications director for the Young Democrats of North Carolina, said Harris is “the perfect person to meet the challenges ahead of us,” including gun violence, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, healthcare and income inequality.

“Since young people my age have been engaged in politics, things have been bad,” he said. “It’s been an environment where it’s really easy to be jaded. Where we reach people the best is by giving them something to believe in and something that’s good and genuine. And I think Vice President Harris is doing exactly that.”

A Midwest Bernie: ‘Tim Walz on the Democrat Ticket Shows Younger Generations Cannot Be Ignored’

We are at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. With President Joe Biden announcing his decision to step down from the 2024 presidential race, we have an opportunity for new leadership to carry forward the torch of our progressive values. It is with great enthusiasm and pride that we rally behind Vice President Kamala Harris as our candidate for the presidency.

The last month has been some of the toughest we’ve seen politically, filled with uncertainty and challenges. But out of these trials, a new wave of excitement and hope has emerged with Vice President Harris’s historic candidacy. Her journey is a testament to the resilience, diversity, and strength that define the Democratic spirit. As the first woman, the first Black woman, and the first South Asian American woman to be nominated for the presidency by a major party, Kamala Harris embodies the change we have long aspired to achieve.

This campaign ignites a wave of excitement and hope across our communities. It is a moment to celebrate our progress and to renew our commitment to building a more just and equitable society. With her unwavering dedication to justice, economic fairness, and climate action, Harris represents the bold and compassionate leadership our country needs.

With Harris leading the charge, we have an unprecedented opportunity not just to keep the White House but to win the House, maintain control of the Senate, and elect Democrats up and down the ballot. As Martin Amis once said, “There are moments in history when time accelerates.” We are living through such a moment now, and it’s up to us to make the most of it.

Vice President Kamala Harris has dedicated her accomplished career to championing the rights of young people and fighting for justice.

As President, Kamala Harris would be the first Black woman and the first person of Indian descent to become leader of the free world. Minnesotans react with shock, delight as Biden drops out of presidential race

Quentin Wathum-Ocama, the president of the Young Democrats of America, is a Minnesota delegate at the upcoming DNC.

He says he’s all in on Vice President Harris.

“I’m a person of color, I’m Black. For the African American community to have a Black woman as our nominee, I think that’s a game changer in terms of turning out underrepresented communities,” Wathum-Ocama told MPR News, “I’m really excited. It’s a new race.”

Kentucky Young Democrats President Allison Wiseman has welcomed the new presumptive nominee of Vice President Kamala Harris. 

“It’s really exciting to see how much the Democratic base has come together in the past 24-ish hours, 48 maybe, depending on how far back we want to go,” Wiseman said.

Wiseman said she thinks Harris becoming the nominee has helped breathe new life into the election, especially for young voters.

Greetings, Young Democrats,

As this June comes to a close, we reflect on Pride Month and celebrate the incredible LGBTQ+ individuals who lead us every day in the Young Democrats, the Democratic Party, and across the nation. We pause to acknowledge all those who have stepped into leadership positions and who are continually making history each day, from those who are organizing at the grassroots level to those who are breaking barriers in elected office.

We also recognize that LGBTQ+ rights, particularly trans rights, continue to come under attack. We stand united in our commitment to fight for our trans siblings and ensure that everyone can live authentically and freely. Our struggle for equality and justice continues, and we will never back down in the face of bigotry and discrimination.

Happy (End of) May, Young Democrats

It’s that time of year again. Campaigns are ramping up and the clock is ticking down until election day. With less than 6 months until November, now is the time to get involved.

We’ve seen the media coverage and know what people are saying. Despite the challenges, this year is different.

Democrats are delivering. President Biden and Congressional Democrats have achieved legislative and executive actions that many said would never happen. They’ve passed substantial legislation focusing on jobs, healthcare, and the environment. Since Republicans took control of the House, all we’ve seen is division, chaos, and inaction.

But there are still threats. Abortion rights remain a crucial issue this campaign season. Since the overturning of Roe, millions of young Democrats and women have registered to vote, driven by the urgency to protect reproductive rights. We’ve also seen a significant increase in election deniers being nominated to the Republican ticket in their states. We cannot allow these candidates to spread misinformation and attack our democracy from elected office. Too much is at stake.

We must make every day from now until November count. Our democracy is on the ballot. Our future is on the ballot.

The Young Democrats of America is holding a virtual conference on the weekend of June 5-9. YDA will facilitate virtual committees, constituency caucuses, trainings, and other programming to offer an opportunity for young democrats to connect and build while ensuring that some important organizational business is completed before the Democratic National Convention this August. We are excited to announce the YDA Rural  and API Caucuses Virtual Summer Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 8th at 3 PM EST. This meeting is a fantastic opportunity for us to come together, discuss important issues, and hear from a remarkable leader who is making a significant impact in our community and beyond. 

We are honored to have Minnesota Representative Samantha Vang as our keynote speaker. Elected in 2018, Representative Vang serves the northwestern Minneapolis suburbs and Chairs the Agriculture Finance and Policy Committee. She is one of the first Hmong American women in the Minnesota House and is a dedicated community advocate with degrees in Political Science and Communications from Gustavus Adolphus College. Her keynote topic will be “Rural Issues”. This meeting promises to be engaging and informative, and we hope you will join us.

On Saturday May 25th, YDA Programming Director AJ Lucky moderated a conversation between Andrew Frawley, founder of The Good Life Movement; Dr. Valerie McCray, psychologist and candidate for the U.S. Senate in Indiana; and Leslie Templeton, Chair of the YDA Disability Caucus in acknowledgment of Mental Health Awareness Month. Arena Academy 201 is a 3 day online training program designed to support those who want to manage people and programs on campaigns. The program focuses on helping political professionals level-up their management skills and navigate the transition to management roles on campaigns.

This training is intended for people who have worked at least one cycle as a full-time paid staffer on a campaign or at a progressive organization, in any position. We consider a cycle to be 3+ months working on a campaign or multiple campaigns.  Registration for this event costs $200, and scholarships are available. You can find out more information here. 

Join Swing Left on Zoom Tuesday, June 25th at 6 pm EST / 3 pm PST for an introduction to grassroots organizing and reclaiming our power as young people. We will cover the fundamentals of organizing everywhere before sharing ways to build community and turn our activism into action this fall.

To foster civic engagement, let young people vote sooner

High school students are organizing and mobilizing to protect themselves, standing up in defense of their rights to academic freedom, gender identity and expression, and the fundamental right to have a voice. Students across our state care deeply about civic participation to contribute to the well being of their community.

The ability of 16- and 17-year-olds to think critically and responsibly while exercising agency is acknowledged by the aforementioned legal rights already afforded to this age group. It is urgent that young people be empowered to use their voices at the ballot box. Rhode Island, and the General Assembly can and should empower the next generation of voters, and foster an engaged and public-minded citizenry.

Trailblazing Ohio Young Democrats leader hopes to grow organization

While he was working, Columbus resident Kimberly Agyekum saw the importance labor unions had in protecting the rights of workers, leading her to become a Democrat and later a member of Ohio Young Democrats.

After serving for years as a national committee representative, she went on to become the first Black woman president of Ohio Young Democrats, being unanimously selected by all chapters in the state.

As Democrats try to leverage abortion to mobilize a reluctant electorate, the party hopes that pro-choice voters — many of whom are young and critical of Joe Biden’s candidacy — support the presidential incumbent while trying to protect their rights.

General Assembly Recap: YDA at IFLRY

From Arne Nelson, International Affairs Chair:

A delegation from YDA attended the General Assembly of the International Federation of Liberal and Radical Youth in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire from May 9th through 12th. We cannot extend our thanks generously enough to Le Rassemblement des Houphouëtistes pour la Démocratie et la Paix (RHDP), the Centre d’Études Prospectives (CEP), and The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) for the incredible hospitality in Abidjan.

We have adopted a new delegate selection process going forward utilizing a group interview format to allow each applicant’s soft skills to come out during conversations. We look forward to seeing applicants who weren’t selected for this GA to stay involved in our international affairs work and hopefully attend other IFLRY events.

We took five delegates to Abidjan. Caitlin Taffe from California, Gennifer Geer from Illinois, William Greer from Vermont, Zachery Annis from Maine, and myself.

We cosponsored a resolution with the Young Liberals of the United Kingdom on Fast Fashion and its environmental consequences. We also prime sponsored an urgency resolution about the protests in Georgia supporting those Georgians standing against the government’s attempts to restrict press and speech freedoms.

I am very proud of the new delegates and how well they represented themselves and YDA. Their intentionality was apparent in every 1:1, every late night delegation meeting, every tense committee, and every conversation over a meal shared with other delegates. 

Caitlin, Gennifer, and William are exceptional Young Democrats representing the best YDA has to offer to the world. 

I was honored to serve alongside them as delegates for my last General Assembly as International Officer. 

I was elected as a Vice President of IFLRY, one of four in total. I was elected with the most votes and I am proud of the coalition I built through years of hard work and building relationships with like minded and committed youth around the world.

This will be my last words as International Officer for YDA, I am resigning to focus on my duties as an IFLRY Vice President.

As we catch up, the whirlwind of events since our last newsletter has kept us on our toes. Across the political landscape, numerous primary elections have drawn to a close, marking significant milestones in the democratic process.

In legal proceedings, the commencement of Donald Trump’s hush money trial in New York has captured widespread attention, further illuminating the threat he still poses to American Democracy.

In other news, Congress’ progress toward passing a bill to aid Ukraine signals a potential breakthrough after months of gridlock in the House but also illustrates the dysfunction and chaos of the current GOP majority. 

As we navigate all these developments, the unfolding stories underscore how high the stakes are this November. We hope some of the opportunities in this month’s newsletter can help you be better prepared for the necessary work ahead.

Students for Biden-Harris is coordinating a reproductive freedom campus week of action from April 27 to May 5 to organize around the second anniversary of the leaked Dobbs’s opinion. To help support students interested in planning events on their campus, the campaign has created a toolkit to help students plan events on campus.  You can click here to access the Reproductive Freedom Campus Week of Action Toolkit.

Younger voters can influence North Carolina elections. What do they care about? 

“I think young voters in North Carolina specifically are casting one of the most powerful ballots in 2024,” said Sloan Duvall, president of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Young Democrats and chair of Students for Stein. 

The competitive nature of the races in the state should be encouraging to college-aged voters and send a strong message to any candidate running in the state, she said. 

“And these candidates know that they are not going to win if they don’t have young people behind them in North Carolina,” Duvall said. 

Protestors meet at Capitol while House Republicans block vote to Repeal Abortion Ban

“Our organization really calls on every member of the state Senate to repeal the archaic 1864 abortion ban because people will die between now and the (​​Arizona Abortion Access Act),” Isabel Hiserodt, a junior studying political science and president of Young Democrats at ASU, said. 

The Arizona Abortion Access Act is a proposed state constitutional amendment that would establish a right to abortions in Arizona. The measure has over 500,000 signatures as of April 2, surpassing the requirement to put it on the November 2024 ballot.

Abortion Ranks Among Top Issues for Young Women Voters

1. Young people—especially young women—say they will support Biden’s reelection.
Approximately half (53 percent) of young Americans indicate they will “definitely be voting” in the 2024 general election for president. This number is about the same as it was in the spring of 2020, a very high youth turnout year.

YDA Delegation is heading to the IFLRY General Assembly in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire

The International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY) is convening its General Assembly in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire from May 9th to the 12th, and YDA is excited to send a delegation to this significant event. 

IFLRY is the worldwide federation of liberal youth organizations, and works to unite voices for democracy, human rights, and economic freedom. The assembly is a key nexus for liberal youth to exchange ideas, learn from one another, and strengthen international ties.

YDA nominates Arne Nelson for IFLRY Vice President

The Young Democrats of America proudly nominates Arne Nelson for IFLRY Vice President. As the International Officer of YDA for the last three years, Arne has gained extensive experience managing our international affairs portfolio, from building and leading delegations to IFLRY General Assemblies to building stronger relationships with other like minded political youth organizations around the world.  IFLRY will elect Vice Presidents and other members of the governing body (the Bureau) at the General Assembly in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire this May.
