What does it mean to be human?

This is arguably the most important question addressed, and left beautifully unanswered, in Jonathan Glazer's profoundly moving and deeply haunting 'Under the Skin', a film that not only acts as a refreshing subversion of the stereotypical science fiction genre, but more significantly allows the spectator to focus and empathise with that which cannot, and conventionally should not, be understood: the alien.

One might reason that the film even brings to light the 'alien' that exists within all of us, as a monstrous undercurrent forever present in modern society. After all, whilst Scarlett Johansson's predatory femme fatale is perhaps the literal representation of an otherworldly creature, as the film progresses, we see her human faculties and emotions take charge, and we become intimately related to her own existential crisis. The streets of glasgow however, crowded with city shoppers, passing cars, night bars...images that initially seem so familiar, grow dangerously distant as we witness the world through her somewhat inexperienced eyes.

It's a remarkable achievement from Glazer, who primarily used hidden cameras in and around Scotland in order to gain authentic reactions from passer bys. Indeed, there is an unnerving sense of realism that pervades the film and after watching, it is nearly impossible to leave the cinema and look at the world in the same way. Add to this a revelatory performance from Johansson, who is at once both terrifying and sympathetic, and you've got an instant classic on your hands. All the signs indicate that casting Johansson just shouldn't work; a hugely famous, American star that can only be considered as part of the Hollywood elite? How on earth can she fit in the role? And yet, this is perhaps her career defining performance - entirely nuanced, subtle, well crafted and completely mesmerizing. She commands every second of the film.

All the ingredients are there and Jonathan Glazer mixes them together with such finesse and accomplished directorial flair that the images stay with you long after the credits have ended. 'Under the Skin' is not just a film, it's a work of art.

Film Review - American Hustle

Combining the stellar casts of his two previous films, 'The Fighter' and 'Silver Linings Playbook', David O. Russell has returned with a luscious 70s extravaganza. With fantastic music, costumes and settings, 'American Hustle' really is a fitting tribute to the flamboyant era, where hair clearly knew no boundaries and bras were non-existent. Having already won several awards, the film is a sure fire contender at the Oscars.

Just as con man Irving Rosenfeld (played by an unrecognisable Bale) alongside his partner Sydney (Adams) attempt to hustle and entice their next client, the audience also gets seduced by the overall trickery of the film - not to mention Russell's lavish and eccentric script. But when the cracks in Rosenfeld's facade begin to show, mainly due to the introduction of both Bradley Cooper and an always fabulous Jennifer Lawrence, we see the dark roots of economic corruption begin to flourish. Thus, the hazy 70s dream transforms into an inescapable nightmare.

All actors and actresses are on top form here, transforming what could potentially be rather parodic dialogue into an incredibly sophisticated verbal waltz. Lawrence, in particular, thrives with the endearingly manipulative housewife role, further demonstrating her unprecedented talent and diversity. As she parades around the house, singing 'Live and Let die' and cleaning with a ferocious spirit, you'll wonder whether there's anything she can't do.

'American Hustle', first and foremost, is a film that boasts a formidable ensemble cast. More than anything it must be watched for this reason. Add a fast paced narrative, a killer soundtrack and a Robert De Niro cameo, and you're in for a winner.

Film Review - Only God Forgives

The most important thing to understand about 'Only God Forgives' is that it is a film one hundred percent directed by, created by, envisioned by and executed by Nicolas Winding Refn. If you're looking for powerful and determined film making, this is it. After his previous success and first collaboration with Ryan Gosling, Refn does not in any way adhere to the expectations of a post - 'Drive' audience, instead opting to unleash his own bizarre and beautiful aesthetic to an even higher degree. And really, who can blame the man? As we've seen, 'Only God Forgives' has divided audiences and critics alike; some have called it a visual masterpiece, whilst others have wrote it off as self-indulgent drivel. Yet, isn't this the greatest compliment a film can receive? To have people talking, arguing, debating and being generally curious? 'Only God Forgives' is not for the passive viewer, and those who merely want to see Ryan Gosling triumph with the same handsome finesse seen in 'Drive' will be sorely disappointed.

This film is dark. This film is tense. And here's why; Nicolas Winding Refn has the ability to transform what is simply Ryan Gosling walking down a corridor into a moment of excruciating suspense - at times it becomes almost unbearable to watch, and combined with Cliff Martinez's eerie score, you're sure to have your palms sweating with tension. The entire film is about the 'build up', and how a scene need not be rushed to have the desired effect. Refn is in full command, giving his audience just enough to remain on the edge of their seat.

And this perpetual mixture of pleasurable anticipation and anxiety lasts for the whole hour and thirty minutes.

The characters in this film contribute largely to its disturbing nature. Ryan Gosling's Julian is a broken, silent man, made even more complex when his Mother Crystal arrives, (played brilliantly by an almost unrecognisable Kristin Scott Thomas) with whom he shares a perverse, Freudian relationship. We then have Chang, presumably the 'God' of the title, whose otherworldly strength and own path of justice make him as ambiguous as his other on screen counterparts. It has to be said that no characters are likeable, but this is clearly an intentional, conscious directorial decision that pays off handsomely. Perhaps this is what makes the film so fantastic; no matter how complex, every formal and technical decision has been made for a reason.

However, it has to be said that the overall visual presentation is perhaps the most gorgeous aspect of this sumptuously surreal film. The cinematography, even from the opening frames, is glorious. It's the kind of camerawork that takes your breath away. This, combined with atmospheric lighting and staging props, makes for a truly beautiful appearance. 'Only God Forgives' has been crafted with such finesse, such style and such wonderful imagination, that it demands repeated viewings.

It might not have been the film everyone wanted, but through time, this film will receive the credit it deserves. After all, it's no secret that many films of the past which were hated upon their initial release are now considered 'classics'. 'Only God Forgives' deserves to be watched - consider your cinematic palate all the more enriched and tasteful for having seen it.

Film Review - Man of Steel

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It's 'Man Of Steel' soaring over expectations and thwarting doubters, proving that, when in the right hands, Superman can be given the film he deserves. Director Zack Snyder, alongside producer and general genius Christopher Nolan, have created a thrilling experience, allowing everyone to cast aside their cheesy allusions of the spandex clad hero, and instead appreciate the man underneath.

Presented in a non-linear narrative, the manner in which we are given Clark Kent's story on earth is both refreshing and, at times, incredibly poignant. You become deeply invested with the misunderstood boy, watching as he deals with extraordinary powers in a rather ordinary, cynical and cold world. When he finally finds out his true self, and steps into the all important suit, it's a moment of comic film triumph - you'll want to stand and cheer as he takes his first flight, as well as gaze in awe at the beautifully elaborate effects used to create such a scene. This film is not one for a home DVD viewing, it simply MUST be seen on the big screen. Scraping on technology and effects is something 'Man of Steel' does not do, and with a budget of around $150 million, every dime has been put to painstakingly good use.

Though Henry Cavill has been in his fair share of films, it has to be said that, before Superman, he was a relatively new face. He does, however, carry this film with great poise and charisma, not allowing his performance to be eclipsed in any way by the big Hollywood names he is surrounded by. Sympathetic, sincere and downright likeable, Cavill embodies the role perfectly. This is likewise for Amy Adams as the fiery Lois Lane, proving that not all comic heroines have to be damsels in distress 24/7. It's no secret that the actress has auditioned for this role in previous Superman films, and we think the casting directors of those failed attempts are probably kicking themselves after seeing Adams, and all the brilliant cast for that matter, in 'Man Of Steel'.

With enough grit to make it feel real, enough mind-blowing effects to make it an escape, and enough heart to make it emotionally charged, 'Man of Steel' thrives during this ever evolving era of comic book adaptations to the screen. You won't be disappointed.

Book Review - The Hypnotist and The Nightmare (Joona Linna Series)

These books creep up on you.

They're that cold shiver down your spine. They possess that unavoidable, addictive quality that is both terrifying and deeply compelling. Lars Kepler (a pseudonym for a husband and wife writing team) have officially joined the ranks and made their mark in the world of Scandinavian crime fiction. What is particularly impressive with Kepler's writing however, is the acute focus on the psychological aspect that, when combined with the level of graphic - but necessary - violence, creates a truly disturbing yet highly gripping narrative.

Detective Inspector Joona Linna; precise, efficient and at times sarcastic, yet not without his flaws, is incredibly likeable. He's the grounding force, the one you root for and the ultimate detective hero. He deservedly stands amongst the likes of Kurt Wallander and Harry Hole, whilst still oozing enough originality to remain a separate entity, as a result of Kepler's strikingly subtle, yet effective, character development. And whilst there are a vast number of other characters in play, (mainly Joona Linna's colourful group of colleagues) there is always a perfect balance of both plot spectacle and character interaction - neither outshines the other.

Perhaps, however, what is most entertaining about these novels is there unflinching level of believability. 'The Hypnotist' draws upon the realistic notion of the fragile human mind, whilst 'The Nightmare' acts as a portrait for the often dark negotiations within a radically progressive, social and political world. The latter thankfully avoids the doomed fate that many sequels seem to face, and instead shows that Kepler is a consistent, diverse and powerful force to be reckoned with. To put it simply, there is something inherently disturbing happening within these narratives, and it becomes clear that we, as readers, easily surrender to Kepler's masterful manipulation, whether we want to or not. It is this, along with many other factors, that makes a truly great writer; that sense that we are being pulled in, directed and guided in ways that make the story both horrifyingly authentic and deliriously enthralling. You simply cannot rest until the final page has turned, and even then the book stays with you, resting quietly within the deep recesses of your mind.

This is the brilliance of the Joona Linna series. The novels are first and foremost, an experience - an experience to be cherished and remembered. Move over Henning Mankell, Lars Kepler is in town.

Film Review - Iron Man 3

Ever since his solo on-screen introduction in 2008, Iron Man, and Robert Downey Junior for that matter, has been at the centre of the Marvel universe. Now the leader of the Avengers, with a movie trilogy under his belt, the super tech hero is the epitome of comic book brilliance, and perhaps the most admired and hilarious of Stan Lee's many admirable creations. As for 'Iron Man 3', it's no secret that this may well be Downey's final solo outing, so let's just say this - he sure has set the bar impossibly high for any other actor who might be brave enough to take on a role that has become inextricably bound with Downey's unique star persona. Half the time, we're wondering whether he's actually acting, as it seems that both he and Tony Stark belong to two sides of the same coin.

The film itself employs a slightly different and refreshing tone to that of it's predecessors, most likely as a result of a new director in the form of Shane Black. It really pushes the comedic ark whilst engaging with the obligatory spectacle that such a movie requires, and this is thanks to fantastic dialogue and improvisation - Downey Jr is renowned for creating unscripted, scene stealing gems, and 'Iron Man 3' is no exception. This, along with the narrative in general, makes the pace of the film deliriously entertaining, every minute simply bounces erratically from place to place, twisting and turning in ways that we certainly didn't expect.

After the global success of 'The Avengers', where Tony Stark was arguably at the peak of his technological powers, this third adventure sees him stripped down to the bare minimum, having lost many of his suits, as well as his mansion, in the very early stages of the film. This proves advantageous for the story line, as it demonstrates the vulnerable side of a notoriously rich, famous and narcissistic character - in fact, it's reminiscent of the very first 'Iron Man', where Stark has very little aid from either tech materials or other characters. He does, of course, triumph by the end, leaving us with a breathtaking final fight sequence that really showcases all of his technologically innovative levels.

There are many new faces along for the ride also, most notably a sinister Ben Kingsley, who turns in an ever expected stellar performance as The Mandarin. If it's one thing these films have got perfect every time, it's the cast. Even Gwyneth Paltrow gets a shot at the action this time around, as the reliable love interest Pepper Potts, and her turbulent relationship with the cocky super hero is one of the most hilarious and endearing aspects of the film. A perfect couple indeed.

Overall, 'Iron Man 3' is a fitting conclusion to a very successful trilogy, and if it should remain simply that, a trilogy, they've done a mighty fine job. Although, we have to admit, our hopes to see Robert Downey Jr revisit this fantastic character a few more times are simply too hard to ignore.

First Trailer - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The first trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to 'The Hunger Games' has been officially released, and it seems that the stakes are dangerously high for the newly victorious Katniss.

Despite this film, 'Catching Fire', having a different director, it really appears that Francis Lawrence is keeping the grisly tone of the first intact. In fact, from this initial footage, we are all breathing a sigh of relief. If this trailer is anything to go by, the finished product is going to be a real treat.

There are also some new faces, Philip Seymour Hoffman being the most exciting. He's certainly gonna give Donald Sutherland a challenge over the ultimate baddie role. And as always, the now academy award winning Jennifer Lawrence is on superb form, proving just what an acting chameleon she really is.

The 85th Annual Academy Awards

Yes, the time has finally arrived. The Oscars. A night filled with glitz, glamour and those beautiful gold statuettes...what's not to love?

Unlike last year's rather predictable affair, it seems that there could still be a few surprises on the awards front tonight. Can't you feel it? The air is tinged with a perpetual anxiety, that glorious feeling (or fear, depending on who you're betting on) where a surprise name is called, and an inaudibly disappointed sigh crosses the room, as the high flying suits watch months of marketing, publicising and campaigning fall gracefully before their eyes. Granted, we all know that Day-Lewis and Hathaway will seal the deal, but as of late, the best actress, supporting actor and even director categories have been both burdened and blessed with critical uncertainty, thus a night of more entertaining and nail biting measures is promised.

Will Jennifer Lawrence pick up her first Oscar for 'Silver Linings Playbook', or will the formidable Emmanuelle Riva (who turns 86 today), steal it for 'Amour'. And we can't leave the brilliant Jessica Chastain out of that mix either, for her powerful performance in 'Zero Dark Thirty'. Christoph Waltz is set to get his second Oscar for 'Django Unchained' (his second collaboration with Quentin Tarantino, who also scored him his first Academy Award), but will it be the second for Tommy Lee Jones in 'Lincoln' instead? It's simply too close to call.

It may be naive in raising ones hopes for a better ceremony this year, but with a man like Seth MacFarlane at the helm, we might be excused in thinking that tonight may well be the Awards extravaganza we've really been waiting for. As a man who's certainly been in the limelight for the past year, what with his successful directorial film 'Ted' under his belt, SNL hosting, singing for the BBC Proms and the always reliable 'Family Guy' still airing, MacFarlane may be just what the Academy needs to dust away those conservative cobwebs, and inject a good old dose of fun back into the prestigious Awards. Only time will tell...

Either way, you won't want to miss it.

Book Review - The Night Circus

Shrouded in delicious mystery, romance and drama, 'The Night Circus' is a wonderfully imaginative book steeped in its own magical world, yet it speaks vividly to ours. Erin Morgenstern's beautifully elaborate passages describing the circus create equally compelling imagery, allowing the reader a truly immersive experience. This bewitching story knows no boundaries. Indeed, such descriptive prose certainly hints towards a degree of Romanticism, as it continuously turns to the notion that, in order to uncover the truth about the world of the circus, one must rely on the senses rather than rational thought.

The book follows multiple characters, and often changes perspectives. For such a narrative, this proves advantageous, as along with the countless surprises within the circus, we are also given an equal amount of colourful characters. Thus the overall pacing of the book proves deliriously entertaining, exploring both the slower intimate moments as well as those filled with magical feuds, quarrels and secrets. Above all however, this novel is pure escapism. Though it interweaves different stories, the general result is delightfully simple, reminiscent of the innocence found in children's literature. Nevertheless, there are dark moments, and times of struggle and heartache, but the ending of 'The Night Circus' is completely fitting, and above all, incredibly satisfying. The novel is a very well rounded, fleshed out piece of writing - this author clearly knows what she's doing. A highly original, thought provoking and sensational read, Morgenstern's debut is a great literary achievement, one that demands to be lapped up greedily in one sitting.

As you turn the final pages, you'll most likely feel as though you've been awakened from a dream, but you'll be yearning to sleep again once more.

Film Review - Les Miserables

A lavish, extravagant and spectacular production, Hooper's musical adventure is nothing short of overwhelming. Those who enjoyed the beloved stage version, or those who take pleasure in musicals in general, will no doubt find it enthralling. Its a gargantuan film packed with killer vocals, unavoidable emotion and those chilling musical moments that make you want to sing right alongside. In fact, its so continuously powerful, loud and non-stop that one barely has the time to catch a breath. Whether this is a cinematic flair or a flaw is perhaps down to the viewer's own disposition. Perhaps those who do not fair well with deep drama, combined with fierce singing, might not be convinced. After all, this isn't a story with the same emotional tune as 'West Side Story', for example. Its real, raw and unapologetically heart-wrenching.

One aspect that really allows the film to triumph is the acting. Hugh Jackman has a tremendous weight on his shoulders with the coveted role of Jean Valjean, yet he carries that weight with grace, confidence and undeniable talent. His character provides the emotional journey, and in Jackman's very capable hands, you'll find yourself utterly sympathetic towards Valjean as he faces the cruelty of 19th century France. Opposite Jackman's huge performance is the irrefutable brilliance of Anne Hathaway, a lady at large in the industry at the moment. As Fantine, with barely 20 minutes of screen time, she really does make her mark. That Oscar is surely set in stone by this point.

There's also a great sense of the director in 'Les Miserables'. Hooper has managed to translate the story incredibly well from stage to screen, without jeopardising any of the intimacy that comes with a live performance, or indeed the spectacle during the fight sequences. It is surprising that he hasn't received an Oscar nod, given that the film has been nominated in many other categories.

This film is definitely an experience and well worth the watch. By the end, you'll feel invigorated, ready to punch your fist in the air as the final note is played.

Film Review - Life of Pi

Beautiful, original and highly imaginative, 'Life Of Pi' is a spectacular and incredibly poignant piece of film making that will surely suit any age. Based on the novel by Yann Martel, we follow Pi, along with tiger Richard Parker, on their unbelievable journey at sea. A whirlwind of visual magnificence and emotional resonance, along with the capable hand of an award winning director, this film is, above anything else, extremely unique and thoroughly captivating. And when combined with a sophisticated and intrinsic level of 3D, it becomes a truly immersive experience - one that you'll want to see again and again. Only recently, the film has been nominated for eleven Oscars, and deservedly so, as it is truly a rare gem.

For those who remain skeptical, and cannot help but question how one might create a film about a boy stranded on a boat with a tiger, there really is no reason to be doubtful. The narrative pacing is efficient and sufficiently developed, with a sense of simplicity and romanticism reminiscent of the classical period of film making. And yet again, Ang Lee's acute directorial focus on character pays off handsomely. Pi, played brilliantly by relative newcomer Suraj Sharma, becomes an unforgettable cinematic hero, particularly as the audience so intimately experiences all the emotional trials that he faces alongside. It gradually transforms into an overwhelming mix of pure spectacle and unadulterated escapism. There really is no life like Pi's.

The level of spiritualism, nature and power of faith that is explored succeeds in challenging even the most stubborn cynic, allowing one to question not simply whether they believe, but the definition of the word itself. Ultimately, the conclusion of the film will provide the answer.

Film Review - Skyfall

It appears that third time is most definitely a charm for Daniel Craig. Back and better than ever, his return as the suave and sophisticated 007 is a glorious comeback, and one that should not be missed. If you were ever in doubt that Bond didn't yet belong to Craig, or still a tad unconvinced, (which is understandable after the highly flawed 'Quantum of Solace'), 'Skyfall' is the film where he truly comes into his own. He's not just Bond, he's a brilliant Bond - there's no denying it.

There's just something incredibly different about 'Skyfall', in a very good way. Perhaps its down to Sam Mendes, a director who has a fabulous flair for character and emotion as well as spectacle. But truth be told, it really is the emotional heart of the film that triumphs, and when combined with the signature Bond-esque touches that we've become so familiar with over the past 50 years; the grandeur fight sequences, mysterious women, cheeky comedy and quintessentially British tones, one might argue that this is the best Bond yet. Most of all however, it is the film which finally allows Judi Dench's M to shine. After years of wasting such a phenomenal talent, she moves from the periphery of the action, to smack bang in the middle of it - and about time too. It only took them 17 years to realise, hey, we have such a brilliant, award winning actress, why not bring her into focus?

Also fantastic? Javier Bardem of course. After his Oscar winning performance in 'No Country for Old Men', it was a sure thing that his role as ultra Bond baddie Silva was going to be equally sinister. He exhibits a truly terrifying subtlety and quiet confidence on screen that really rivals his other on screen counterparts. That, combined with his glossy new blonde do', really gets your skin crawling. It seems 007 has his work cut out for him in this one.

Incredibly well-paced, thrilling and narratively engaging, the films suits any age, and balances perfectly the various elements that contribute to a truly spectacular piece of film making. We are now looking at a 21st century Bond, with expectations growing along with the changing audiences, yet there is more than enough in 'Skyfall' to satisfy both the new and old generations of cinema goers. After all, the proof is in the pudding, and 'Skyfall' has recently become the highest grossing film in Britain - a fitting 50th birthday present for the ever adored, nostalgic and down right cool Mr Bond.

Mark Wahlberg confirmed for Transformers 4

Well, what a surprise.

Mark Wahlberg is set to join the war between the Autobots and Decepticons in the upcoming Transformers movie, Michael Bay has confirmed. Hopefully, this will bring some much needed refreshment and maturity to the series.

Here's what Bay had to say in an official statement:

“Mark is awesome, we had a blast working on Pain And Gain and I’m so fired up to be back working with him. An actor of his calibre is the perfect guy to re-invigorate the franchise and carry on the Transformers legacy.”

So, is this a good partnership? We'll just have to wait and find out. In the meantime, the official logo for the fourth outing has been released, which you can view below to your heart's content.

Film Review - Brave

Pixar is back on form with 'Brave', a visually stunning adventure that follows Merida, a fiery heroine with an untamed disposition to match her wild, flaming locks. Set in the luscious Scottish lands, this sweeping journey is crammed with suspense, thrills and plenty of heart - just a small example as to why Pixar, despite minor flaws in the past (ahem, Cars 2), still provides the best animated tales on our screens. 'Brave' is certainly a film to be marvelled at. The colours and setting are truly breath taking, deep greens, cool blues...a forest so alive that one can barely tell it has been created by a computer. It must be said that the prestigious animators have coped very well with the very 'human' side of the craft, having opted for animals, monsters and even toys in the past. The leading Merida is herself a work of art, not to mention the studio's very first female heroine, who neither seeks nor requires a male in her pursuit of happiness - a feat for Disney, what with such a refreshing and unorthodox approach against their regular 'damsel in distress' narratives. Merida is certainly not a girl to be trifled with, as is evidenced by her fragile relationship with Mother Queen Elinor, which provides the emotional foundation for the story.

As is customary with Pixar, there is still the expected sentimentality and moral heart of the film, so as to provide a clear character arc. And in this respect, perhaps the film isn't quite as original as one would wish, seeming to stick to the same pattern that is clear in the studio's previous successful creations. But why break something if it isn't broken? The partnership of Disney and Pixar is, without a doubt, a force to be reckoned with - they are the true pioneers of film animation, not simply by their technical innovation, but by there high level of consistency in producing fine films - and 'Brave' is no exception.

A joy from start to finish, crammed with loveable characters and visuals to die
for, this film is a must see for all the family.

Film Review - The Dark Knight Rises

"You don't owe these people anymore. You've given them everything," explains the seductive Selina Kyle (in the trailer, that is) to a determined Batman, who merely replies; "Not everything. Not yet". A fitting quote it would seem, when considering 2008's 'The Dark Knight', in which audiences were truly given everything, including a near perfect film. But similarly to the caped crusader, it also appears that Director, and genius, Christopher Nolan still has a few more tricks up his sleeve. A taut, sophisticated and stylish piece of film making, 'The Dark Knight Rises' is a brilliant conclusion that exceeds any, if all, the expectations that were thrust upon it from the moment production began.

Even from the opening scene, in which we are introduced to the new, and physically larger, antagonist Bane, there is no doubt that Nolan is going to deliver the goods. And from that moment on, the film propels to new heights at an excruciatingly pleasurable pace, weaving intricate character strands and an elaborate storyline together in order to create a spectacular journey from beginning to end. At a gargantuan 2 and 3/4 hours long, there is no aspect within this now historic trilogy of films left untouched - every loose end is tied up with such a capable and distinguished directorial flair that one can not only appreciate the mark of a great film maker, but a great auteur too.

This can also be considered the most emotional of the three films, given that Bruce Wayne is, as a consequence of Batman taking the blame for Harvey Dent's murder, a shadow of his former self; he walks around with a stick and hasn't left his house for eight years. Unfortunate though it may seem, it is still narratively advantageous, as we are provided with some incredibly moving scenes between Wayne and reliable butler Alfred, played brilliantly by Michael Caine, of which are sure to pull at your heartstrings and bring a tear to your eye. In a film of such scale, moments like these are truly treasured, and bring the fantastical element back down to reality. It must be said that Caine has never been better. It is perhaps the introduction of Selina Kyle, aka jewel thief Catwoman, that sets events in motion. Though there was much speculation and doubt when Anne Hathaway was given the coveted role, it's safe to say she pulls off the iconic character effortlessly, adding just the right amount of sex appeal and humour to an otherwise dark and gritty blockbuster.

For those craving action, never fear, Nolan doesn't disappoint. Magnificent chase sequences, combat and even flying over Gotham skylights are all included, and when combined with Hans Zimmer's masterful score, you're in for a real treat. Again, the opening plane sequence is particularly extraordinary, not least because the entire scene was created with no computer effects or green screen - there are no words to describe just how mind-blowing it actually is. Technically, to have accomplished so much with so little CGI is a feat indeed, and credits greatly the production crew, whom Nolan has worked with frequently throughout his films. 'The Dark Knight Rises' is a film that balances perfectly these moments of utter grandeur with those of a more quiet and intimate nature, allowing the audience to become emotionally invested in the characters whilst they battle through such spectacular circumstances.

So, let's address someone that everyone is talking about, a certain Mr Tom Hardy. There is no doubt that Heath Ledger's chilling Oscar winning performance as The Joker in 'The Dark Knight', was a fine one indeed, and arguably the best villain in the trilogy. Yet Hardy's portrayal of the anarchic and theatrical Bane is equally terrifying, and even more challenging, given that his mouth is covered throughout the whole film. It seems eyes actually do hold the key to your soul, and Hardy's ferocious, savage and intuitive expressions capture Bane perfectly, as well as his dramatic accent. The actor is a force to be reckoned with. The way in which Nolan has crafted Bane in particular emits a certain social resonance, as, via the formidable character, we are introduced to corrupt hierarchical themes, in which Bane ignites a war between the social classes. Just another reason why the film has a contemporary significance and realism.

All in all, it's impossible to summarise the brilliance of the ensemble cast. Each individual plays a pivotal role in the plot, thus demonstrates the reflection of Nolan's skilled and undeniably controlled script. If there's always been one constant factor maintained throughout the trilogy, it's the amazing cast.

So the end has finally been brought upon us, and what a way to say goodbye to the timeless Batman. From this final installment, as well as all three films collectively, it's obvious why everyone adores Nolan's creation, why it's critically acclaimed, why it's constantly talked about, why fans adore it and why it will stand the test of time - because there is simply nothing else that comes close. A fitting, and utterly enthralling conclusion, to what will now be surely known as the greatest film trilogy of all time.

Words just aren't enough.

Marvel Rules Comic-Con 2012

Comic- Con 2012 is officially underway. And it seems that Marvel has much more than Iron Man, Thor and Captain America sequels in the pipeline: they've also confirmed movie adaptations for Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man. Fans have also been treated to a preview of Iron Man 3, which, according to reports, has been very well received, and Robert Downey Jr himself surprised everyone with an appearance at a costume event filled with mini Iron-Mans.

If there's one place to be over the next few days, it's Comic-Con.

Film Review - The Amazing Spider-Man

First things first. Out of all the marvel movies, the Stan Lee cameo in 'The Amazing Spider-Man' is by far the funniest. It's a true scene stealing moment, and deservedly so, given that the legendary comic artist's creations have been at the forefront of cinema recently. So kudos to Webb for providing Lee with such a shining appearance, even though, ironically, he doesn't even have any dialogue.

Moving swiftly on to the brilliant Andrew Garfield. When Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' hit cinemas back in 2002, it has to be said that Tobey Maguire's spandex-clad hero was an innovative and impressive role that helped reboot the genre. 10 years later however, we've been given an even better, grittier, darker and funnier interpretation. From the first moments of the film, it becomes obvious that Garfield proves an uncannily natural fit for the relatable web slinger, not least because the script allows him to explore the more confident and cocky side of Peter Parker when blessed with his powers. You really get the sense that Garfield had a very clear focus and idea upon entering the teenage psyche, and as a result, has established a much more realistic, empathetic and likeable version of the character. After all, who wouldn't play a few tricks and break the rules if given such powers - especially if you were still at school?

Eventually however, Parker learns that great power does, indeed, come with great responsibility, thus the more potent and captivating emotional arc of the film is formed. Enter Gwen Stacy, Spidey's first love played by the increasingly fantastic Emma Stone. Seriously, the chemistry between these two leads is off the charts. Every hero needs his leading lady, and Stone's compassionate, calm, smart and free spirited character is the perfect accompaniment to Garfield's slightly more unpredictable and, for want of a better word, jumpy teenager. It's a match made in comic book adapted heaven. Equally fantastic is Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors, simply because of how disarming he is for an audience. Despite having all the stereotypical 'evil genius' attributes, Connors is still a very sympathetic human with flaws - which isn't quite so expected for such films, where a good and bad side is normally distinguished clearly, quickly and early. In this, he's just a man on a quest for self repair and perfection, which again highlights the realism within the film.

And even though the 'untold' aspect of the story is not as explored as it should be (we receive barely any information on the disappearance of Peter's parents, for example), 'The Amazing Spider-Man' is still a solid piece of story telling, promising an entertaining two hours in the cinema. And, after Sam Raimi's successful trilogy, it's time to start afresh, and if this introduction is anything to go by, it's gonna be one hell of a ride. Welcome back, Spider-Man.

Sequel? We think so.

Film Review - Snow White and the Huntsman

IMDb summary: In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen.

This grittier, darker and more atmospheric interpretation of the classic fairytale has both good and bad qualities. We'll start with the good: the acting. Charlize Theron's performance, which is highly dramatic and even ridiculous in parts, captures perfectly the ravenous and desperate nature of the tortured Queen Ravenna, who we come to learn has an unfortunate past of her own. Needless to say, she is quite terrifying in the film, and there is none better than Theron to play such a powerful and corrupted character.

And then there's Kristen Stewart. Perhaps not the most obvious choice to play such a role as Snow White, but she pulls it off surprisingly well, simply because it is refreshing to finally see her acting with both confidence and professionalism. If you're looking for the awkward girl that stumbles hopelessly over words, a trait which Stewart has claimed both on and off screen, you will not find her in this film. She is in control, determined and brave - and Stewart has embodied the character perfectly. Her British accent is also very good, for the record. Perhaps the same cannot be said for Hemsworth's slurred version of Scottish, but he too is an asset to the film, and provides yet more character and relationship development, as well as some amazing fight sequences, of course.

So, as regards to the performances, Snow White and The Huntsman ticks all the right boxes. Narratively? Not so much. As seems custom for many films this summer, the script is lacking and seems rushed in parts. The ending in particular is quite anti - climatic, which is a shame given the film's other positive qualities. Don't get me wrong, its still a far cry from the catastrophically bad 'Battlefield', for example, but it still leaves a lot to be desired. What is missing in the narrative nevertheless, is utterly made up for in visuals. For once, the fantasy land that we all imagine, and occasionally want to live in (admit it), is made a reality on the big screen, and audiences will be awed by the fantastic use of colour and CGI.

Snow White and the Huntsman is a mixed bag, but it seems that the good does outweigh the bad. As a Friday night film, it works really well - just don't expect a profound cinematic version that explores the themes of a corrupt medieval society or the emotional depths of the age old fairytale. Just expect...a version.

Django Unchained: First Official Trailer

The first trailer for Quentin Tarantino's next flick has been released. The film, due out at Christmas, looks smothered with the Director's trademark style, and promises to be a fantastic holiday gift for cinema fans across the globe. What's most apparent is how reflective it is of the great Sergio Leone's directorial flair, even down to the impressive quick zoom cinematography. It simply oozes with perfect execution - but we wouldn't expect any less from Tarantino. Take a look at the exhilarating trailer below, and sound off in the comments section.

Prometheus - Does it Match the Hype?

The first reviews for one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, 'Prometheus', have finally been released. The film, which sees director Ridley Scott finally return to his Alien roots, has been shrouded in secrecy throughout the entire filming progress. However, some lucky critics have been treated to advanced screenings - but is it all its cracked up to be?

Perhaps, shockingly, not. In fact, rather surprisingly, the film has received mixed reviews, ranging from plain average to rather good. But they're all a far cry from the 'absolutely perfect' we were hoping for. For all you magazine geeks like myself, 'Total Film' gave it a very respectable 4 stars, whilst 'Empire Magazine' only gave it a vanilla 3 stars. So what gives?

Heading over to the newspapers, Peter Bradshaw for 'The Guardian' also gave it 3 stars, praising only how 'upstaging everyone is Fassbender, who provides the film's real glint of steel, while decentring its dramatic focus'. Its good to know that we can still rely on Michael Fassbender to provide the goods.

Whilst 'The Telegraph' has given it 4 Stars, stating that 'Ridley Scott's Prometheus is a slime - spattered, blood - spurting, science - fiction adventure'.

So who can you trust? Our best bet is to wait and see the film yourself. Chances are, if you're familiar with the original Alien, your reaction will be highly different to someone unaware and simply looking for a Friday night film. But, we have to admit, our hearts broke just a tiny bit when we didn't find any golden 5 stars.

Please God let 'The Dark Knight Rises' be a triumph.

Latest Bond Teaser Trailer finally revealed!

The trailer for the latest Bond installment, mysteriously named 'Skyfall', has hit the web. Though short, its certainly enough to wet your appetite. It's suspenseful, exciting and most definitely promising - without giving any of the plot away, of course. Needless to say, its a welcome return for the world's most famous agent, especially after a) the production company shut down due to finance and we never thought we'd see another Bond film again and b) Quantum of Solace. Perhaps the latter doesn't really need an explanation.

First Trailer for 'Gangster Squad'

The first official trailer for Ruben Fleisher's 'Gangster Squad' has hit the web. The Director, mostly known for films such as 'Zombieland' and '30 Minutes or less', seems to have taken his career down a different road this time. The film follows a group of police officers who turn rogue in order to keep the mafia crime at bay amidst 1940's Los Angeles. Needless to say, it looks enthralling, especially as it still appears to have the darkly comedic, smart dialogue seen in Ruben's previous directorial works. There's also an all star cast, which always helps, of course. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Film Review - Marvel's The Avengers

There's something slightly overwhelming about seeing your favourite super heroes on screen at the same time. Its almost surreal...glorious, unbelievable. It takes repeated viewings to process the entire concept. 'The Avengers' has been in the pipelines for a few years. In fact, it's probably had one of the lengthiest introductions into the movie world, what with around 6 origin stories prior to the release. Combining all these past adventures and the large variety of characters into a two hour film was an incredibly ambitious thing to do - but Joss Whedon has done it with flair, humour, grace, spectacle and heart.

This film doesn't take itself too seriously. In fact, its a barrel of laughs from start to finish. And what can one expect when so many different personalities are thrust together? In a nutshell, the one liners come thick and fast, the ridiculing, the mocking, the joking make regular appearances and the playfully antagonistic relationship between the gang is apparent from the get go. Just your ordinary, dysfunctional family, then. Of course, Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man gets the best snarky moments, particularly during his first scrap with Norse God Thor, in which he proclaims 'Doth mother know you weareth her drapes?'. However, it has to be said that The Hulk also gets some brilliantly slap stick, shining, laugh out loud moments, and deservedly so after his two previous films, which barely scraped the surface when exploring his character. A rather hysterical meeting between the green monster and Loki springs to mind as one of the greatest scenes in the film. 'The Avengers' has allowed the Hulk to be emotionally fleshed out as well as physically - Mark Ruffalo is the first actor to actually PLAY the Hulk, thanks to motion capture.

Though the whole 'Loki war' plot is somewhat standard and unsurprising, one barely notices with such a strong character driven script, which eclipses any, if all, of the film's narrative faults. It becomes a feast for the eyes not simply for the breath taking action, but to see how these heroes interact with one another, because each individual essentially believes that they are the strongest...that they are the leader. 'Ego' just doesn't cover it. Also, each hero is explored equally. The remarkable thing about this film is that its incredibly well controlled, and balanced - there's a fluent quality that allows it to feel merely two minutes long rather than two hours. You get the feeling that Joss Whedon, despite being aware of the high expectations, wanted to create a faithful comic adaptation whilst still striving to make it his own. In short, it's a reliable and grounded piece of film making that DELIVERS. One should feel a large sense of satisfaction when leaving the cinema.

And that final twenty minutes...phew! A mind blowing showcase of top-drawer battle escapism. The word 'epic' immediately comes to mind.

'The Avengers' is a super hero movie at its best, because it stays in touch with human emotion, whilst still maintaining that obligatory action packed block buster element. It's a truly thrilling ride with a number of memorable characters. A phenomenal introduction into what will hopefully lead to many more adventures with the world's most famous 'super secret boy band', as Mr Stark would have it.

First Django Unchained Images Roll in....

And they look PHENOMENAL. Our excitement for the next Tarantino flick has officially cranked up a notch. We can see Leonardo DiCaprio as the evil plantation owner Calvin Candie, along with Christoph Waltz and Jamie Foxx as Dr. King Schultz and Django. For starters, the costumes look superb and we can't help but fan squeal over that perfectly sadistic look courtesy of Mr DiCaprio. Even from these initial glimpses it seems the reputable Director has everything spot on - if there's two things that are perfect for each other, its Tarantino and a Western.
