The famous beach in bali

Located on the western side of the island's narrow isthmus, Kuta Beach is Bali's most famous beach resort destination. Kuta Beach is also minutes away from the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Tuban. The nearby resorts of Tuban, Legian and Seminyak are all within close walking distance.

Once a simple, rustic and quiet fishing village, Kuta Beach has witnessed a transformation over the past years due to the rise of various accommodations, dining and shopping options. The rapid growth owes much to visitors, beachcombers and art lovers from nearby Australia. Expatriates also helped pioneer surfing in Kuta, as well.

Although a rather frenzied traffic scene has become commonplace here, Kuta Beach continues to attract thousands of visitors every year with its unique charm. During the peak season from July to August and the holiday season for Christmas and New Year, Kuta Beach is regularly fully-booked by travellers looking forward to a pleasant and affordable Bali escape.

The five-kilometre long arching sandy stretch of Kuta Beach is still possibly the best beach front of Bali. A very short drive away from the airport, meter taxis and motorcycle taxis are easily found around the area to take you anywhere in Kuta or elsewhere. The beach is safe, partially clean and well maintained, although the vendors fill up the beach side haphazardly.

However, this beach is really famous for its spectacular sunsets and waves, and attracts tourists who spend hours here swimming, surfing and sunbathing. This place is a well-known destination among surfing enthusiasts: the long sandy beach with its lack of dangerous rocks or coral makes the waves ideal for beginners.

There is not much you can see and enjoy in Kuta itself, but the white sandy beach extends beyond the airport into Jimbaran. Known as Bali’s number one sunset site, every late afternoon hundreds of people gather to watch the spectacular sunsets and enjoy a meal of fresh seafood from one of the many beachside cafes. The sunsets here are spectacular around December, so don't forget your camera.

Another place you should visit is Ground Zero, where Balinese residents and foreign tourists alike still keep coming to put fresh flowers at the Memorial. A Bali Bomb Memorial Event is also held every year, hosted jointly by the Indonesian and Australian governments.

Most of the activity in Kuta is related to the beach. The options are endless – you may try surfing, swimming, sunbathing or kite flying, or you could simply head into neighbouring Tuban for some waterslide action at Waterbom Bali.

If you just want to have fun or relax, you can try kite flying or employ a team of masseurs while you sunbathe. You will know the massage ladies immediately from their cries of ‘Hello, yes? Massage?’ and if you aren’t accosted by a team of them offering pedicures, manicures and hair-braiding alongside a massage as soon as you step onto the beach, you will easily spot them sitting along the beach, waiting for their next customer.

Nusa Penida Island

There are some neighboring islands near to Bali. There are 3 most famous ones located around 20 km away from Bali to the south-east known as Nusa Penida Island, Nusa Ceningan Island and Nusa Lembongan Island. Among these three islands, Nusa Penida Island is the largest one, and also well known as the best destination for scuba diving.

To many people, these three Islands might not be recognized as parts of Bali’s district. Somehow, they give a great contribution to the tourism development. As we have known, Nusa Penida Island is the biggest one among the three. While Nusa Lembongan Island is the second larger island and Nusa Ceningan Island is the smallest one. Each of these Islands shares their own unique tourism destination and arts. In Nusa Penida Island, you will find beautiful pure beaches and some conservation places protecting plants, birds, and also turtle. Besides that the local people have a very special dance known as the Golden Egg.

When you are diving in Nusa Penida Island, you will likely to see the large pelagic, such as Manta Ray’s (Manta Birostris) at some locations, such as Mola Mola (Oceanic Sunfish) and Manta Point Dive Site. If you get lucky, you will sometimes see the whale-shark too.

As part of Bali’s district, Nusa Penida Island is under the Klungkung regency. If you want to go to Nusa Penida Island from Bali, you need to go to Padang bay to take a ferryboat crossing from Bali to Nusa Penida Island. The only ferryboat available is called as Roro-Nusa Jaya Abadi. This boat will take you crossing the Badung Strait (located between Bali Island and Nusa Penida Island), and the trip will take around one hour to get to the Toya Pakeh Harbor in Nusa Penida Island. After you have reached the island, you can continue the trip by having a modified pick-up car or known as “omprengan”.

The northern dive sites of Nusa Penida like Crystal Bay, Pura Ped and Toyapakeh are good destinations for Drift Diving. A boat ride with BIDP's speed boat of 45 minutes brings you to the best underwater adventures here in Bali Indonesia.

The divesites around Penida can be challenging. Upwellings from the deep can cause thermoclines and let the temperature drop to 20 degrees celsius. Currents running between the Nusa Islands and Lombok Strait are most of the time southward, but can be influenced in direction and strength by the monsoon seasons.

The three islands, Nusa Penida Island, Lembongan Island and Ceningan Island are situated at the Wallace Line which lies at the middle of Bali Island and Lombok Island. This Wallace Line is a separation line between the eco-zones of Asia and Australasia. To the west of the Wallace Line, Asiatic species and organism live, while to the east of the Wallace Line, Australian species and organism exist for living. According to the scientist, these boundaries have been existing for 50 million years. They are predicted to be the south-western edge of Sunda Earth Crust Shelf which are believed to link some main islands in Indonesia, such as Java, Sumatera, Borneo, Bali to the Southeast Asia’s mainland.

Nusa Penida Backgrounds

Nusa Penida Island as the part of Bali district under the Klungkung Regency has its own history. The Nusa Penida Island was a place where the Gelgel dynasty from Bali was held in prison at early 18th century under the Majapahit ruler. The Gelgel Dynasty was one of the Balinese Kingdoms which conquered the Lombok Island once.

Badung Strait, during WWII the Badung Strait was the location of "The Of Badung Strait". This event took place on 19 and 20 february 1942. Allied forces had a confrontation here with the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Diving in Nusa Penida

There are so many things to do in Nusa Penida. As the famous diving destination, there are some great diving locations in Nusa Penida Island, such as Penida Bay, Batu Meling, Batu Lumbung, Toyapakeh, Manta Point, Batu Abah and Malibu Point. The flow passing through the Lombok Strait is commonly heading to the south, while the tidal streams’ directions are commonly influenced by the seasons of monsoon.

During the southeast monsoons, the tidal flow tends south; during the northeast monsoons, the tidal flow tends north. In the area of the strait north of Nusa Penida, the pattern is relatively simple, with a flow, at peaktide, of about three-and-one-half knots. Tidal streams in Badung Strait are semi-diurnal, but the character of the stream is very complicated because its direction runs obliquely to the general south to north direction of Lombok Strait, and the channel has a curved shape.

Besides beautiful destinations, there are many other interesting tourism destinations to visit in Nusa Penida Island. You will find that there are many pure beaches as well, or you can go to the top of Puncak temu where you will be amazed with a spectacular scene from the height. Besides that, there are also some arts performances that you can watch.

A beach which is closest to the harbor is situated in Toya Pakeh village. In this beach, there is a floating restaurant. The most important thing is you are allowed to dive in this beach and see very beautiful reef. Indeed, in this beach, reef is an important component that is still preserved from any damage.

Besides Toya Pakeh Beach, Nusa Penida has a very cozy beach. It is around 4 km from Toya Pakeh. This beach is situated in Sakti Village at Banjar Penida. I guarantee you that this beach is different from the famous Kuta or Sanur. The beach which people call it Crystal Bay, is very quiet, far from crowd. The water is sparkling blue. The sand is black but it is covered by white sand. The beach is very clean because people at Banjar Penida keep it clean. And the beach is gated by escarpment.

Going up quite far away from the beaches, you will head to Puncak temu, the top of elevated ground. This is a place where you will be able to enjoy beautiful scenery of Nusa Penida Island from the bird-eye view. You will also see some white shrines at this top with so many trees that seem protecting these shrines from the outside world. This is something that you will find interesting because most parts in Nusa Penida Island are commonly lacing of water and dry, while here in Puncak Temu, there are green fresh vegetables as the sign of the water existence.

On very south of Nusa Penida there are villages named Sekartaji and Suana. In these villages, Nusa Penida Endemic Bird: little sulfur-crested cockatoo can be found. In all regions in Nusa Penida there is only four little sulfur-crested cockatoo left. One female and others are male. You are lucky if you can take a photograph of this bird since this bird is very energetic.

Nusa Penida does not only offer the amazing tourism destination but also unique dances. Sanghyang Dewa dance is one of them. This dance must be danced by little girl who has not got menstruation yet. People of Nusa Penida categorize it into sacred dance because it is danced on special day at the temple. That little girl is unconscious while she dances it.

Toyapakeh

There are actually two sites in Toyapakeh nemaley as the Toyapakeh Wall and Toyapakeh. These twosites are rich with the underworld creatures, such as fish and corals. The wide variety of fish that you will see by diving in this location is amazing. You will sometimes see the large pelagic as well by creeping around the blue. Toyapakeh Wall is a must diving place that you shall not miss. This is the place where you will encounter the presence of the Mola-mola hanging out in season.

Malibu Point

When you are taking a boat trip along the coast line of Nusa Penida Island, you will come to Manta Point where some huge animals are commonly seen. Manta Point is an open water area, so that diving is not possible to have in certain circumstances.

Malibu Point is a diving site with gray reefs, reef white tips, silver-tips and numerous sharks. While Penida Bay is another anchorage, and the rocky islands have an interesting forms; something like an old resting elephant. The bay is vulnerable to swell, creating-up-and-down-currents. Then, Manta Point is a limestone rock off Pandan cafe. The swell is relatively strong.

Crystal Bay

If you are looking for a calmer bay, Crystal Bay will be a perfect spot for you. In Crystal Bay, you will also find many Antheases and batfish that will come in a certain periodic of time, because there is a bat cave near to this bay.

This site consists of a fantastic little bay in shallow water that offers excellent opportunities for photos, before sliding down into deep drop offs. Superb coral is only matched by the equally superb marine life. This is another excellent place to locate the Mola Mola which gather to be cleaned on the slopes of the reef.

Nusa Penida Bird Sanctuary

Besides West Bali National Park, there is also a conservation park in Nusa Penida Island known as Nusa Penida Bird Sanctuary. In this reservation, a hundred of nearly-extinct birds are protected, The Nusa Penida Bird Sanctuary is organized by Begawan Giri Foundation and also friend of National Park Foundation supported by the whole community of Nusa Penida Island.

In this island the birds is protected by the whole community of Nusa Penida, by addition of a decree on bird conservation in the awig-awig (traditional law) of Nusa Penida. The community enforces sanctions such as fines and sepekin banjar (ostracized) for anyone caught harming the birds. All 35 villages on Nusa Penida island have now signed bird protection laws and villages and Harbour Authorities are working together to fight the illicit trade. The role of community is not just end up there, at the sanctuary young people from the surrounding village are trained as staff in the clinic; bird handling and research procedures.

Up to May 2007 Nusa penida Bird Sanctuary has already released 49 Bali Starlings, and recently it is reported another ten offspring fly free. The success on the Bali Starling opens another conservation project. White Cockatoo, an indigenous species of Nusa Penida, now in danger, it is reported that only three white cockatoos roaming freely on the sky, clearly in worse situation than Bali Starling. Nusa Penida Bird Sanctuary now put her best effort to save this rare bird.

Nusa Lembongan Island is located at the Badung strait which is between Bali and Lombok. Unlike the neighboring islands which attract the tourist by their traditional seaweed harvesting, Nusa Lembongan Island offers a more relaxing place. The only fast thing that you may see there is the waves along its beautiful beaches.

Nusa Lembongan Island is a small island 12 miles away to the south east from Bali, which can be reached by one-hour boat ridding from Benoa Harbour. If you seek for a hidden quite place with beautiful beach surrounding you then Nusa Lembongan Island is exactly what you are looking for. The island is forming a pear shaped along 4 km in length and 2 km in width. The Nusa Lembongan Island beauty is completed with the presence of the fringing reef which has been declared as a National Marine Park by the Indonesian Government. The reef gives advantages in supporting the Nusa Lembongan Island and the neighboring islands’ Eco-system. Besides the reef, the waters are also known for having a variety underworld creature and also a great place for surfing. The main income’s sources of the local people are farming sweet potato and peanuts, building traditional wooden boat and fishing.

Diving and Snorkeling in Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is very popular for divers. Nusa Lembongan is the perfect location for a dive trip like no other. iving in Nusa Lembongan offers amazing underwater world with some excellent dive sites. The warm waters are abundant with extensive coral reefs and magnificent marine life with sharks, turtles and manta rays. Spectacular dives include drop off walls, wreck diving and drift diving.

Biking and Walking around Lembongan

If you are a type of person who loves for biking or hiking, you will find the pleasure in Nusa Lembongan Island. You may have a rented bike to exploring the island. There are some steep spots where you will be challenged to conquer them. Some people might find the rented bikes not too comfortable to ride, but you can always have another adventure on your own feet exploring the beautiful nature of the island. You may go walking around the island, and it will only take you around 2 hours. However, it will be more pleasant if you take sometimes to enjoy some interesting places in Nusa Lembongan Island during the day.

Desa Lembongan, with its huge banyan tree and its colorful temples

Gala Gala Underground House was built by Made Byasa in 1961-1976. This underground house is located down a narrow path from the main road towards the Ceningan bridge. The road is the narrow one, but a motorbike can still pass through. At the entrance, you will find a line of souvenir stalls where you can buy local souvenirs such as sarongs, shorts and other handicrafts. The house was built underground using only a hammer, chisel and intuition as guidance. It took 15 years to complete this incredible labyrinth, which includes a bedroom, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and sacred meditation room.

Seaweed farms

Heading westwards from the Lembongan Village and then following the roads along the coast, you will find a range of green and blue seaweed farming. The seaweed farming is separated by some ropes and little posts where the algae are tied up on it to grow. Since the mid-1980s, nearly all the community lives off seaweeds, which are exported to the rest of Asia for the cosmetic and food industry. Every household can make one to two million rupiah a month from the red and green algae – just enough to survive on these islands, where everything has to be brought from the main land at high cost.

Rent motorbike for the day to try and find our perfect beaches. Went around the entire island, saw about different beaches, Nusa Ceningan island is good view to see, Dream beach is nice for relax with a great bar / cafe, Mushroom beach is also nice and snorkeling is ok too.

Swinging Bridge

The recently built suspension bridge between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan connects the two islands and allows the visitors to easily access each island. This narrow and swinging bridge only allows access on foot, by bicycle or motorcycle and it is unsuitable for cars.

Dream beach

At the Nusa Lembongan Island’s entrance turning to right to the southwards, you will find the Dream Beach. It is a beautiful hidden white-sandy beach with its fierce waves. The Dream Beach may not the ideal one for swimming, but it is still a nice place just to have a refreshing swim. However, you always need to pay extra attention to the waves, especially when it is coming to high tide time. You are only aloud in the middle of the beach where you can see like a white line of sand in the water. Never go close to the cliffs of the left side! At high tide, the current may be a bit too strong for small children.

There is a restaurant here, and it is the source of entrance to the beach. You can watch the sunset from the upper floor of the restaurant.

Mushroom Beach

Mushroom Beach is known as one of the beautiful beaches in Nusa Lembongan Island. It is named after the mushroom corals offshore. This amazing Mushroom beach will spoil you with its white sandy panorama. There are 2 Mushroom Beaches to say, and even though they are one next to the other, there is a difference. There is the more isolated one, with its casual visitors, and the more populated one with some upscale hotels.

There is some coral, which is sharper than the coral that you find in Bali. So make sure you bring the rubber shoes if you plan to do some walking at low tide. But swimming is possible at this beach.

Mushroom Bay - Surfing

Mushroom Bay is a perfect place for having a great surfing experience. It is suitable not only for the professional surfers, but it is also perfect for the beginners. Besides surfing, this Mushroom Bay is also a safe place for any other water sport. The bay has a white sandy beach not too far to the wave. There are some other interesting places nearby to the Bay, such as Ship Wreck, Batumelawang ( Secret Point ), and Play Ground ( Song Lumbung Bay).

There is transportation from Bali, directly to this beach, but you need to be sure by asking that it will drop you off here.

Mangrove Park

Balinese Dances History

After the Majapahit warriors subdued Bali in the 14th century, Javanese mini-principalities and courts soon appeared everywhere, creating that unique blend of court and peasant culture, which is Bali - highly sophisticated, dynamic and lively. The accompanying narrative for dance and drama is to a large extent based on court stories from pre-Majapahit Java. Even the Indian epics, another favorite of the stage, especially the wayang, use Javanese, complete with long quotes from the ancient Javanese Kakawin poetry So Javanese culture, which disappeared from Java following Islamization in the l6th century, still survived in Bali in a "Balinese form", which became classical Balinese culture.

However, colonization brought about the fall of classical Bali. With the rural courts defeated and with new lords of the land, the centre of creativity shifted to village associations, and to the development of tourism. The 30's and 50's were particularly fertile decades; while the old narrative led theater survived, lively solo dances appeared everywhere, accompanied by a new, dynamic kind of music called gong kebyar. This trend continued in the 60's and 70's with the creation of colossal sendratari ballets, representing ancient Indian and Javanese stories adapted to the needs of modern audiences.

Dance & Religion

Balinese dance is inseparable from religion. A small offering of food and flowers must precede even dances for tourists. Before performing, many dancers pray at their family shrines, appealing for holy "taksu" (inspiration) from the gods.

In this rural tradition, the people say that peace and harmony depend on protection by the gods and ancestors. Dance in this context may fulfill a number of specific functions:

As a channel for visiting gods or demonic gods, the dancers acting as a sort of living repository. These trance dances include the Sang Hyang Dedari, with little girls in trance, and the Sang Hyang Jaran, a fire dance;
As a welcome for visiting gods, such as the pendet, rejang and sutri dances;
As entertainment for visiting gods, such as the topeng and the wayang.

In some of these dances, the role of dancing is so important that it is actually the key to any meaning to be found in the ritual. In wayang performances, the puppeteer is often seen as the "priest" sanctifying the holy water.

As well as their use in religious ceremonies, dance and drama also have a strong religious content. It is often said that drama is the preferred medium through which the Balinese cultural tradition is transmitted. The episodes performed are usually related to the rites taking place; during a wedding one performs a wedding story; at a death ritual there is a visit to "hell" by the heroes. Clowns (penasar) comment in Balinese, peppering their jokes with religious and moral comments on stories whose narratives use Kawi (Old-Javanese).

The typical posture in Balinese dance has the legs half bent, the torso shifted to one side with the elbow heightened and then lowered in a gesture that displays the suppleness of the hands and fingers. The torso is shifted in symmetry with the arms. If the arms are to the right, the shifting is to the left, and vice-versa.

Apart from their costumes, male and female roles can be identified mostly by the accentuation of these movements. The women's legs are bent and huddled together, the feet open, so as to reveal a sensual arching of the back. The men's legs are arched and their shoulders pulled up, with more marked gestures, giving the impression of power.

Dance movements follow on from each other in a continuum of gestures with no break and no jumping (except for a few demonic or animal characters).

Each basic posture (agem), such as the opening of the curtain or the holding of the cloth, evolves into another agem through a succession of secondary gestures or tandang. The progression from one series to the other, and the change from right to left and vice-versa, is marked by a short jerky emphasis called the angsel. The expression is completed by mimicry of the face: the tangkep. Even the eyes dance, as can be seen in the baris and trunajaya dances.

The Dances of Bali :

Oleg Tambulilingan or bumblebees Dance.

The Balinese like a blend of seriousness and slapstick and their dances show this. Basically the dances are simply straight forward ripping yarns – like vaudeville shows where you cheer on the goodies and cringe back from the stage when the baddies appear. Some dances have a comic element with clowns who counter balance the staid, noble characters. The clowns often have to put across the story to the audience, since the noble characters may use the classical Javanese kawi language while the clowns (usually servants of the noble characters) converse in everyday Balinese.

It is not hard to find dances – they’re taking place all the time, all over the island and are usually open to anyone. Dances are regular part of almost every temple festival and Bali has no shortage of these. There are also dances virtually every night at all the tourist centers; admission is usually costs from 50.000 to 80.000 rupiah for foreigners. Many of the shows put on for tourists offer a smorgasbord of Balinese dances with a little Topeng dance, a taste of Legong dance and some Baris dance to round it off. If you see one disappointing performance of a particular dance then look around for another venue as the quality and the level of drama varies. Some of the more common dances are:

Kecak Dance

"Cak-cak-cak." The obsessive sound of a choir from beyond the dust of ages suddenly rises between the lofty trees. Darkness looms over the stage.

Hundreds of bare-breasted men sit in a circle around the flickering light of an oil lamp chandelier. "Cak-Cak". They start dancing to the rhythmic sound of their own voices, their hands raised to the sky and bodies shaking in unison. This is the unique Kecak, perhaps the most popular of all Balinese dances.

Visitors rarely leave the island of Bali without first seeing a Kecak performance. Originally the Kecak was just an element of the older Sang Hyang trance dance. It consisted of a male choir praying obsessively to the souls of their ancestors. At the initiative of painter Walter Spies, this religious choir was transformed into a dance by providing it with a narrative. The ballet is the Ramayana epic. The prince Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Laksmana are exiled in the middle of the forest. Rama goes hunting a golden deer at the request of his wife, who saw the strange animal and has asked him to catch it. While he is away, she is kidnapped by Rahwana and taken to the latter's island kingdom of Alengka (Srilangka).

Rama allies himself with the monkeys and in particular with the white monkey Hanuman. They build a bridge and cross to the island. War ensues until finally Rama defeats Rahwana and is again united with his faithful wife.

Barong and Kris Dance

Barong and Kris dance like the kecak dance the Barong and Kris dance is a battle between good and evil spirit. Barong can take various forms but in this dance he takes the form of the dance Barong Keket, the most holy of the Barongs. The Barong Keket is a strange creature, half shaggy dog, half lion and is played by two men in much the same way as a circus clown-horse. His opponent is the witch Rangda.

The barong personifies good and protects the village from the witch Rangda, but he’s also mischievous and fun loving creature. He flounces into the temple courtyard, snaps his jaws at the gamelan, dances around and enjoys the acclaim of his supporters-a group of men with krises. The Rangda makes her appearance, her long tongue lolling, her pendulous breasts wobbling, human entrails draped around her neck, fangs protruding from her mouth and saber-like fingernails clawing the air.

Now Barong dance is no longer the clown, but the protector. The two duel with their magical powers and the Barong’s supporters draw their krises and rush in to attack the witch. Randa puts them in a trance and the men try to stab themselves, but the Barong also has great magical power and casts a spell which stops the krises from harming the men. This the most dramatic part of the dance – as the gamelan rings crazily the men rush back and forth, waving their krises around, all but foaming at the mouth. Sometimes even rolling on the ground in a desperate attempt to stab themselves. Finally Rangda retires defeated and good has won again. Good must always triumph over evil on Bali, and no matter how many times the spectator have seen the performance nor how well they know the outcome, the battle itself remains all important.

The end of the dance still leaves a large group of entranced Barong supporters to be brought back to the real world. This is usually done by sprinkling them with holy water, sanctified by dipping the Barong’s beard in it. Performing the Barong and Randa dance – with all that powerful magic – is an operation not to be taken lightly. Extensive ceremonies must be gone through to begin with, a temple priest must be on hand to end the dancers’ trance, and at the end a chicken has to be sacrificed to propitiate the evil spirits.

Legong Dance

Legong this is the most graceful of Balinese dances and to sophisticated Balinese connoisseurs of dancing the one of most interest. A Legong Dance, as a Legong Dancer is always know, is a young girl – often as young as eight or nine years olds and older than her early teens. Such importance is attached to the dance that even in old age a classic dancer will be remembered as a ‘great Legong’ even though her brief period of fame may have been 50 years ago.

There are various forms of Legong but the Legong Kraton, or Legong of the palace, is the one most usually performed. Peliatan’s famous dance troupe, which visitor to Ubud often gets a chance to see, is particularly noted for its Legong. A performance involves just three dancers – the two Legongs and their ‘attendant’ knows as the condong. The Legongs are identically dressed in tightly bound gold brocade, so tightly are they encased that it’s something of a mystery how they manage to move with such agility and speed. Their faces are elaborately made up, their eyebrows plucked and repainted and their hair decorated with frangipanis.

It’s a very stylized and symbolic dance – if you didn’t know the story it would be impossible to tell what was going on. The dance relates how a king takes a maiden, Rangkesari, captive. When Rangkesari’s brother comes to release her he begs the king to let her free rather than go to war. The king refuses and on his way to the battle meets a bird bringing ill omens. He ignores the bird and continues on to meet Rangkesari’s brother who kills him. The dance however, only related the lead-up to the battle and ends with the bird’s appearance. When the king leaves the stage he is going to the battle that will end in his death.

The dance starts with the condong dancing an introduction. The condong departs as the Legong come on. The Legongs dance solo, in close identical formation, and even in mirror image when they dance a nose to nose love scene. They relate the king’s sad departure from his queen, Rangkesari’s request that he release her and the king’s depature for the battle. Finally the condong reappears with tiny golden wings as the bird of ill fortune and dance comes to an end.

Baris Dance

Baris the warrior dances know as the Baris is a male equivalent of the Legong in which feminist and grace gives way to the energetic, warlike, martial spirit. A solo dance, the Baris dancer has to convey the thoughts and emotions of a warrior preparing for action and them meeting an enemy in battle. The dancer has to show his changing moods not only thought his dancing, but also through facial expression. Chivalry, pride, anger, prowess and finally some regret (well war is hell, even in Bali ) all have to be there. It’s said that the Baris is one of the most complex of the Balinese dances requiring a dancer of great energy, skill and ability. Familiar tale in Bali but the dance has been a relatively recent addition to the Balinese repertoire. It tells much the same story of Rama and Sita as told in the Kecak Dance but without the monkey ensemble and with a normal gamelan orchestra accompaniment. It’s also embellished with many improvisations and comic additions. Rawana may be played as a classic bad guy, the monkey god Hanuman can be a comic clown, and camera-wielding tourists amongst the spectators may come in for some imitative ribbing.

Kebyar Dance

Kebyar this is a male solo dance like the Baris Dance, but with greater emphasis on the performer’s individual abilities. Development of the modern kebyar is credited in large part to the famous pre war dance Mario. There are various forms of the dance including the seated Kebyar Duduk where the ‘dance’ is done from the seated position and movements of the hands, arms and torso plus, of course, facial expressions are all important. In the Kebyar Trompong the dancer actually joins the gamelan and plays an instrument called the trompong while still dancing.

Janger Dance

Janger Both Covarrubias and Hickman in their between-the-wars books on Bali comment on this strange new, almost un-Balinese, dance which suddenly popped up in the 1920s and 1930s. Today it has become part of standard repertoire and no longer looks so unusual. It has similarities to several other dances including the Sanghyang where the relaxed chanting of the women is contrasted with the violent cak-a-cak-a-cak of the men. In the Janger dance, formations of 12 girls and 12 young men do a sitting dance where the gentle swaying and chanting of the girls is contrasted with the violently choreographed movements and loud shouts of the men.

Topeng Dance

Topeng the word Topeng means ‘pressed against the face’, as with a mask. This is a mask dance where the dancers have to imitate the character their mask indicates they are playing. The Topeng Tua, for example, is a classic solo dance where the mask is that of an old man and requires the performer to dance like a creaky old gentleman. In other dances there may be a small troupe who dances various characters and types. A full collection of Topeng masks may number 30 or 40.

Another mask dance is the Jauk dance, but this is strictly a solo performance. The dancer plays an evil demon, his mask an eerie face with bulging eyes and fixed smile, long wavering fingernails complete the demonic look. Mask dances require great expertise because the dancer is not able to convey the character’s thoughts and meanings though his facial expressions, so the character of the unpleasant, frenetic, fast-moving demon has to be conveyed entirely through the dance.

Pendet Dance

Pendet this is an everyday dance of the temples, a small procedure gone through before making temple offerings which doesn’t require arduous training and practice. You may often see the Pendet dance being danced by women bringing offerings to a temple for festival, but it is also sometimes danced as an introduction and a closing for other dance performances.

Sanghyang Dances

Sanghyang Dances the Sanghyang trance dancea originally developed as a means of driving out evil spirits from a village. The Sanghyang is a divine spirit which temporarily inhabits an entranced dancer.

The Sanghyang Dedari is performed by two young girls who dance a dream-like version of the Legong. The dancers are said to be untrained in the intricate pattern of the dance and, furthermore, the dance in perfect harmony but with their eyes firmly shut. A female choir and a male Kecak choir provide a background chant but when the chant stops the dancers’ slump to the ground in a faint. Two women bring them round and at the finish a priest blesses them with holy water and brings them out of the trance. The modern Kecak dance developed from the Sanghyan.

In the Sanghyang Jaran a boy in a trance dances round and through a fire of coconut husks riding a coconut-palm hobby horse-it’s labeled the fire dance’ for the benefit of tourist. Once again the priest must be on hand to break the trance at the close of the dance.

The Gamelan

As in Sumatra and Java, Balinese music is based around the gamelan orchestra. The whole gamelan orchestra is known as a gong – an old fashioned gong gede or a more modern gong kebyar. There are even more ancient forms of gamelan such as the gong selunding, still occasionally played in Bali Aga village like Tenganan.

Though the instruments used are much the same, Balinese gamelan is very different from the form you’ll hear in Java. The Yogyakarta style, for example, is the most reserved, fomal and probably the gentlest and most ‘refined’ of gamelan – while Balinese gamelan often sounds like everyone going for it full pelt. Perhaps a more telling point is that Javanese gamelan music is rarely heard except at special performance, Where as in Bali you seem to hear gamelans playing all the time everywhere you go.

Don't forget your credit cards and make sure that your credit cards are issued by major international banking institutions
For more common currencies, please bring American dollars and Indonesian Rupiah.
Learn and dare to bargain, you will find the skill very helpful as it would save your money in Bali . You wouldn't like it if you found out that you had overpaid some items you've bought.
Respect Balinese customs, rituals and sensibilities. Please follow the local rules and prohibitions
Make sure that you bring your sun-block, don't let the heat burns your skin
Make sure you pick the right taxi, if you want to travel. Specify the taxi driver that you want the meter to run properly, get out from the taxi right away if the driver says the meter is broken. There is the a risk you being charged with an excessive fare.
Visitors got lost easily in Bali, so make sure that you bring a complete and comprehensive map of Bali . You may ask the local for directions, the Balinese are well-known for their hospitality.
Bring a sufficient supply of prescription drugs. You may also purchase your medicine at local stores with “apotek/apotik” signs. Bring any important items related to your medical history and your physician's contact information.
Keep small change with you, you'll never know how it will come in handy.

The Visa on Arrival is non-extendable and cannot be converted into a different visa.
The Visa purchasing system will take approximately 3-5 minutes per applicant.

Once you have paid for and received your visa you will need to proceed to Immigration where your visa will be processed
Citizens of countries not on the visa on arrival or visa free lists will be required to apply for a visa before entering Indonesia.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Indonesia, and you must have proof of onward passage (either return or through tickets). If you cannot fulfill both of these requirements, you may not be allowed to enter the country .

How to Obtain the "VISA on ARRIVAL" (VoA) :

Travelers from the above countries must be in possession of a passport which is valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival and the completed embarkation/disembarkation card they received from their airline. They must also be able to prove they have sufficient funds for their stay in Indonesia.

Arriving travelers with Visa-On-Arrival status have to go first to one of the 'VoA Counters' to pay the appropriate fee and have their passports stamped with the VoA before proceeding to the Immigration Clearance Desk. An official bank is part of the VoA service counters. Payment of visa fees can be made in all major currencies or by VISA or MASTERCARD.

Requirement and Types of Visa Before Arrival:

Citizens of countries neither on the VoA nor Visa-Free lists are required to apply for a visa overseas before travelling to Indonesia. Nationals of ALL countries planning to stay for more than 30 days in Indonesia also have to apply for the appropriate visa (tourist, business, social-cultural, etc.) at an overseas Indonesian Consulate or Foreign Mission before departing for Indonesia.

Getting Around

You will find a range of chauffeur driven limousines, self-drive cars, taxis and hotel courtesy cars. Many taxis are not metered so it's wise to negotiate the fare before you climb aboard. Bemos are a unique form of transport. They are a mini-van masquerading as a communal bus. You simply hail the driver and negotiate the fare that suits you both. Motorcycles can also be hired in many places but special care should be exercised at all times as road and traffic conditions can be somewhat hazardous in certain locations. Traveling around Bali is made all the easier because everywhere you go you'll find friendly people only too happy to give you advice and directions on how to get where you want to go.

Driving License

If you wish to hire a car you must be over 18 years of age and poses an International Driver's License or license from ASEAN countries.

Clothing

Light, airy, casual clothes are the most practical and you'll find natural fibers like cotton or linen are the most comfortable in Bali's often humid conditions. Waist sashes should be worn when visiting temples.

Driving

In Bali always expects the unexpected; always keep your eyes open and your mind on driving. Beware of motorbikes! It is best to rent a car with a full insurance as this will save time and money if you are involved in an accident.

Nusa Ceningan Islands which are located 20 km away from Bali to the south-east coast consist of three islands named as Nusa Penida Island, Nusa Lembongan Island and Nusa Ceningan Island. Compared to the other two islands, Nusa Ceningan Island is the smallest one. Going to Nusa Ceningan Island can be traveled by using a boat departed from Sanur, or if you are already in Nusa Lembongan Island, you can just use the bridge that is connecting these two islands.

Similar to the other two islands, Nusa Ceningan Island’s climate is also dry and hot. The problem faced by the locals is also the same, which is always about the water supply. However, the nature of Nusa Ceningan Island is a spectacular one. Since the Nusa Ceningan Island is not a big island, you can explore every inch of this spectacular beauty within a short period of time. To heat up your day in Nusa Ceningan Island, you can start your journey from the eastern part of the island where you will find an amazing coral reef. Whilst the breaks usually suit intermediate to experienced surfers given they all break over coral reefs, the aptly named Playgrounds is a little more forgiving and can be enjoyed by beginners and experts alike. Although surfable all year round, waves are best when winds are in the southeast quarter, normally from April to September/October.

Diving

Diving in this place is very good with crystal clear waters around the island. A number of leading dive shops and places of the famous course. Hundreds of visitors have learned to dive here.

For more experienced divers the most interesting site is the next area, Nusa Penida. There are some challenging dive sites here, and dive operators will visit a particular site only if it is safe sea conditions. There are many choices for the reef flat easier and wall diving as well. Night dives are widely offered and offers a fantastic underwater experience.

borobudur temple

one of the World Wonder Heritages...

Borobudur was built approximately in the IX century. Borobudur was built by the adherents of Mahayana Buddhism during the reign of Dynasty Syailendra. This temple was built at the height of the dynasty Syailendra. Samaratungga King is the founder of the Borobudur temple coming from dynasty Syailendra. The possibility of this temple was built around 824 AD and was completed around the year 900 AD during the reign of Queen Pramudawardhani who is the daughter of Samaratungga. According to the story down through the generations, the architect who contributed to build this temple is Gunadharma.

Based on the first written evidence which was written by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, who named this temple as the Borobudur is the Governor-General of the United Kingdom in Java. Before that, there is no written evidence that gives a name to this temple of Borobudur. Only one of the oldest document that shows the existence of this temple is Nagarakretagama book, written by Mpu Prapanca in 1365. In the book is written that this temple was used as a place of Buddhist meditation.

Meaning of the name Borobudur is "monastery in the hills", which comes from the word "coal" (temple or monastery) and "beduhur" (hills or high places) in Sanskrit. According with the meaning of the name Borobudur, so this place long ago used as a place of Buddhist worship.

Borobudur temple is located in Magelang, Central Java, about 40 km from Yogyakarta. Borobudur has 10 levels consisting of 6 levels of a square, 3 levels of circular and a main stupa as a peak. At every level there are several stupas. In total there are 72 stupas besides the main stupa. In each stupa there is a statue of Buddha. Ten levels that illustrates ten levels of Bodhisattva which must be passed the buddha's people to achieve the perfection of the Buddha in nirvana. The perfection is symbolized by the main stupa at the top level. Borobudur structure forming a mandala structure that describes the Buddhist cosmology and the human way of thinking when viewed from above.

The Blue Lagoon Beach is on the east side of Bali and it took us about 1.5 hours from Kuta just to drive there. But the beach was worth it - it was like a hidden paradise. The beach is clean and water is quite sheer so it's easy to see what's underneath. Another good thing, there are not many people there

Blue Lagoon is close to Padangbai harbour. Known as an underwater paradise, the water is warm and the marine life is abundant. You may well see clouds of ultraviolet fish daubed with splashes of luminous orange, followed by shoals of black fish with tails shaped like the head of a spanner, you might even see a fish in a leopard-print coat, and if you look carefully, you will notice cleverly camouflaged creatures hiding in the reef crevices. The coastline borders a coral garden where you can snorkel among psychedelic fish. Padangbai is a major harbour for ferries to Lombok as well as for smaller boats to Nusa Penida. It is a very picturesque village, with semi-circular hills surrounding a sparkling blue bay. It is also home to a famous temple, Pura Silayukti, where the Buddhist sage Mpu Kuturan is said to have lived in the 11th century.

Blue Lagoon Beach is a great beach for snorkeling. The coral reef is right up to the shore and is very pretty. Best way is to enter on the far left side, where there is a coral-less canal that leads to the snorkling site. There are two restaurants with reasonable food, showers, chairs and snorkeling gear. The beach is easily accessible. To reach Blue Lagoon Beach, head east on foot over the prominent headland at the eastern end of the main bay. Follow the signs that say Blue Lagoon. Note that wading through the water can be both frustrating and dangerous due to an abundance of coral and submerged rocks.

There is good snorkeling in the bay, though the snorkeling at the Blue Lagoon or White Sand Beach is much better. Beware of the current and remember basic safety rules, such as never to snorkel alone and not to swim to far off in a place that you do not know.
Several small shops in the main street of Padang Bai rent snorkeling equipment. They can also organise traditional jukung boats to bring you to the best spots and greatly increase your safety.
On a calm day expect lots of fish and great visibility.

Did you know that Indonesia has one of the most beautiful underwater paradise of the world? The underwater paradise known as the Wakatobi National Park, located in Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Wakatobi is the capital of Wangi-Wangi. Wakatobi district consists of four main islands, namely Wangiwangi, Kalidupa, Tomia, and Binongko.

So, Wakatobi is an acronym for the name of the four main islands. Prior to December 18, 2003, these islands are called Junior Iron Islands and is still a part of Buton Regency. Astronomically, Wakatobi is located in the south of the equator and such other areas in Indonesia, Wakatobi has two seasons, rainy and dry season. Wakatobi National Park established in 1996, with a total area of 1.39 million hectares, involving marine biodiversity and coral which occupies one of the highest priority of marine conservation in Indonesia.

The beauty and richness of the Wakatobi National Park area is already well known in foreign countries, especially after the Wallacea expedition from England in 1995 which states that the area in Southeast Sulawesi is very rich in species of coral. There, there are 750 of total 850 species of coral in the world. Configuring the depth varies from flat to sloping to the sea and waters in some areas there is a steep rugged. Waters reach the deepest part of 1044 meters.

Marine tourism is a tourism activity that has long been recognized and is the mainstay of tourism in the Park Authority. Wealth of marine life is not because coral reefs along the vast waters of the submarine topography of colorful slop like shape, flat, drop-off, atoll and underwater cave.

More than 112 species from 13 families including corals Acropora formosa, A. Hyacinthus, Psammocora profundasafla, Pavona cactus, Leptoseris yabei, Fungia molucensis, Lobophyllia robusta, Merulina ampliata, Platygyra versifora, Euphyllia glabrescens, Tubastraea frondes, Stylophora pistillata, throchelliophorum Sarcophyton, and Sinularia spp living in harmony with other underwater inhabitants.

Fish species richness of this national park which is owned as many species of fish such as (Cephalopholus argus), takhasang (Naso unicornis), pogo-pogo (Balistoides viridescens), napoleon (Cheilinus undulatus), red fish (Lutjanus biguttatus), rabbitfish (Siganus guttatus) , Amphiprion melanopus, Chaetodon specullum, Chelmon rostratus, Heniochus acuminatus, Lutjanus monostigma, Caesio caerularea, and others.

Wakatobi National Park also hosts a collection of sea birds such as the Swan-Stone Chocolate (Sula leucogaster plotus), Malay plover (Charadrius peronii) and King Prawn Eurasia (Alcedo atthis) nest. Several species of sea turtles also make this park their home such as hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), loggerhead turtle (Caretta Caretta), and cracked turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea).

Uluwatu temple

Uluwatu, which is located at the southern tip of Bali island and towards the Indian Ocean, is a charming tourist attractions, and famous for its beautiful sunset. This temple is perched on the edge like a very high cliffs and steep, with a view of the sea under a blue net and hit the waves that produces white bubbles are very beautiful. Views of Pura Uluwatu is truly a very exotic and romantic feelings that can be thrilling and when visiting this site, I'm sure you want to come back here. Padang-Padang beach is located at Jalan Labuan Sait, in the village of Pecatu, Bali. Located not too far from the tourist area of Uluwatu. Arriving near the entrance of Uluwatu Travel, we take the road turn right. Follow the directions, to see that underneath the bridge looks the beach. Upon entering the area of Padang-Padang beach, we passed a temple. Interestingly, to get to this beach, we had to descend the stairs are made in the cliffs. After a few yards down the stairs we are greeted by the sun. It turns a dark alley behind the beach there is incredible beauty. The waves that roll, rock-breaking waves, and the sky is captivating. Towards dusk, we could see a beautiful sunset view, as if the sun is swallowed by the ocean.

Bali Padang-Padang Beach is one of the best beaches in Bali in addition to dreamland, Kuta and Nusa Dua. White sandy beach stretching ahead of you, clear blue water and flat, perfect for swimming. Sand white color contrasts with the black rocks and blue sea exotic. The beach was clean, quiet atmosphere and crystal clear waters will make us feel at home after a long time to swim and sunbathe here. The more the light rays of the sun adds to the more exotic blue waters are shown. A bright blue sky and white clouds forming harmonization beautiful scenery. The beauty of the beaches in Bali called Blue Point, Distance from Kuta beach is about 45 minutes, by passing through the winding roads and up and down.
