Relive your childhood and show these great movies to your kids before it’s too late!
1. Princess Bride. It’s funny and delivers some of the greatest movie lines of all time. Ages 8+. Inconceivable!
2. Stand by Me. This one is not for the kiddies, but an important movie to watch with your pre-teen. A life lesson. Ages 14+.
3. The Sandlot. What kid does not like baseball and killer dogs that are not really killers. Ages 8+.
4. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Might be why I had so many absences in high school!. Ages 12+.
5. Better off Dead. On the darker side but still brings back memories. Ages 12+.

There are so many like Beetlejuice, Back to the Future, Karate Kid, Pretty in Pink, Goonies, Say Anything, Bill & Ted’s and the list can go on that fall on a mother list, just not my top five.

As always, if you need advice on a movie before your child watches it, check out Common Sense Media.

By Peter Meredith

Karate is a very exciting martial art that focuses on character development, physical fitness and practical self-defence.

Most karate classes are highly structured and follow an internationally recognised syllabus, where students are constantly encouraged to do their best, as they learn various skills and techniques that help them develop both physically and mentally.

As a result students learn self-discipline, improved concentration and focus, improved fitness and stamina, self confidence and the ability to focus under pressure.

With a structured syllabus and the progressive belt system, this allows for students to progress within the style as they meet the requirements of each belt level, this makes the achievement of a new grade a very individual accomplishment and lets students grow at a rate that suits their learning and physical abilities.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Karate is a traditional Japanese based style that focuses greatly on values such as respect, self control, discipline and honour.

The founder of one style of karate, once believed that if he could take any student, no matter what type of person they were and teach them those values, then they would leave the dojo (school) a much better person, and if he could teach those values to enough students he would have a significant impact, not only on his local community but possibly even effect the chances of world peace.

This may seem far fetched in today’s scheme of things, but it makes sense that if you can improve the core values of enough people, even in a small part of the population, it would have a positive effect on some level.

PHYSICAL FITNESS

The physical training involved in a style such as Kyokushin karate in particular, develops co-ordination through repetitive use of the body’s general motor skills, and increases strength, core stability, balance and flexibility, which is important especially for younger students during the early years of physical change.

This physical aspect of training also encourages an overall positive attitude to keeping fit and leading a healthy active lifestyle.

PRACTICAL SELF DEFENCE

Although karate teaches the physical skills that could be used if a student was to find themselves in danger, its main purpose is to build the confidence within a student of their ability to protect themselves, which eliminates reactions based on fear, allowing them to focus under pressure, control aggression, and only apply the force necessary to protect themselves under the circumstances.

OVERALL BENEFITS OF KARATE

Over all karate teaches life skills. Skills that are the building blocks of good character and leadership.

Karate is good for people of any age, but in particular, karate is good for kids, to be able to learn these life skills early in their development, as well as taking on a healthy attitude to being active, creates a strong foundation for a happy healthy individual.

Jigsaw puzzle is an interesting toy for your kid. It can be a great present for him. Jigsaw puzzle is not only a toy but it is a sort of nourishment for little kids. Basically, these are problems designed for little kids in shapes of small patterns or tiles. These small pieces are required to be assembled properly in a complete picture which is a great source of success for little kid at one end as well as learning at the other. Each and every small piece of the puzzle has some part of the picture which requires to be completed.

Jigsaw puzzles are available in a number of images. These may be the images of buildings, nature, animals, food and many others. It’s totally up to your choice what you really prefer for your little kid. Previously, these puzzles were designed with the help of hard cardboards. However, nowadays time has changed and advances have been achieved in this field as well. More diverse illustrations are created for little kids helping them to enhance their thinking and brain capability. Moreover, puzzles are designed with increasing levels of difficulty. These difficulties give more challenging tasks to little kids at one end as well as raise the level of confidence that they can face these challenges.

Reminiscing precious moments is a past time we all love. It’s fun, and sometimes poignant, to look at images from way back since these are all we have to remind us of the past. Your baby’s firsts are immortalized with those pictures you never got tired of taking. But before you take another shot, here are some tips in capturing great shots for your baby’s photo journal.

1.	Know Your Subject: You probably know your baby’s mood better than anyone else so take pictures when your baby is in a good mood. Not only will you get wonderful photos, but it also will be less stressful for the both of you. Don’t forget to shoot pictures of seemingly ordinary moments – eating, sleeping, playing – take multiple shots, and create a collage in your baby’s photo journal!

2.	Moving In Close: In photographing your baby, you have to alter your shooting style just a bit to achieve the image you are looking for. Move in and shoot at eye level, this will make up for the difference in size (your baby is cute and small) as well as create a more personal connection with your subject. But hey, this shouldn’t stop you from taking good shots from different distances, experiment.

3.	Know the Technical Basics: You are not a professional photographer; you are just an ordinary parent trying to compile great photos of first-times for your baby’s journal. Yet, this shouldn’t be an excuse of not knowing and learning of photography basics. One of which is that, it just couldn’t be too bright, use natural light as much as possible. Another is to do away with distractions in the background so that the focus is on your subject. Next, it doesn’t hurt to invest on a good quality camera and film.

Enjoy your photo session with your baby and capture those first-times in vivid colors, soft sepia, or classic black and white. Fifty years later, your baby’s journal is a treasure chest of memories so make sure you capture those precious moments now.

Although there are ready made baby car seat covers available in the market, you might want to get one or make one for your car seat which uses a special print or pattern to go with your vehicles interior, or better yet which your kid likes.

By James Anthony

Making your own baby car seat cover is not a difficult task. Although there are ready made baby car seat covers available in the market, you might want to get one or make one for your car seat which uses a special print or pattern to go with your vehicles interior, or better yet which your kid likes. Colorful and patterned car seat covers not only look different and stylish, but they also get attention from other people.

If you make a car seat cover at home for your childs car seat, you will be better able to make one which fits onto the car seat exactly. The ones available in the market might be either too large or too small for your specific car seat, and hence can give an odd look to the whole interior of the vehicle. Choosing and making a custom car seat cover will take care of this problem. Similarly, you will have the advantage of easily removing the car seat cover any time you want for easy cleaning. When making a car seat cover at home, you can make multiple of them to replace any old car seat as well to give it a brand new look, or to change your existing car seats regularly, without spending a lot of money on buying readily available and expensive car seat covers from the market.

When you decide to make a car seat cover for your baby’s car seat, the first step should be to measure the length and breadth of the seat and the backrest of the seat. Once you have the 2 measurements, you will need to add 10 – 12 inches to either of them to make sure that the extra fabric completely covers the car seat. After that, you will need to choose a fabric for the child car seat cover. Make sure that the fabric you use is easily washable so you can re-use it, does not get stained easily and is also breathable. Common fabrics to choose from is cotton or leather, and if you choose cotton, make sure you wash it once before you sew the covers so the cover does not shrink once the final car seat cover is ready. You can choose any design, pattern and color for the child car seat, according to your linking and also according to the vehicles interior in which you will be using it.

Deciding on a pattern is also very important once you have chosen your fabric. If you want to use double patterned fabric, with striped or plain cloth, it is up to you. It is best to first go through the different designs which can be sewn and then draw the pattern on paper. Extra fabric should be left on either side of the pattern with markings to make sure that the car seat cover does not become small. You can then trace out the pattern on large sheets of paper to finally cut the fabric according to it. The paper can be used as a stencil to guide you at every step so that everything goes smoothly. You can then cut out the fabric according to the paper stencil by pinning the paper and fabric together.

Once all the pieces of fabric are cut out, you can then start stitching the car seat cover. The border of the seat cover should be stitched first. An opening should be left which will let you turn the car seat cover inside out once you have finished stitching. Make sure you leave slits on the back of the seat cover to let the vehicles straps to pass through. Also make sure you hem all the slits so the fabric does not fray.
Once the car seat cover is stitched, you will need wide Velcro tape to attach to it to. Do not use elastic as it looses its elasticity over time. However, you can use elastic at the sides or the borders of the cover so that it fits snugly onto the seat. Once the Velcro tape and elastic is added, you can put the cover onto the car seat in your vehicle, and viola, Your brand new and classy car seat cover is ready!

By James Anthony

Pregnant and breastfeeding women often have concern that they are losing hair. Women especially experience postpartum hair loss which is completely normal and temporary. This temporary hair loss is completely unrelated to breastfeeding and women usually return to their normal hair growth cycle between 6 to 12 months after birth. It is during these 6 to 12 months that they are also breastfeeding the new born child, which is why they think that breastfeeding is the main cause of hair loss. However, this is never the case. Whether women nurse the child or bottle feed him by expressing milk using an electric or manual breast pump like medela pump in style advanced breast pump, breastfeeding never leads to hair loss.

Hair growth follows a routine, which includes the growth phase and a resting phase. At any time, around 85 – 95% of hair on your scalp is in the growth phase, whereas the rest of it is in the resting phase. During pregnancy and after child birth, a woman’s body undergoes many hormonal changes which stimulate an increase in the percentage of hair in the growth phase. Due to this hormonal change, expecting women usually experience thick and shiny hair during their pregnancy months. Taking prenatal vitamins also helps the hair to grow healthier, but half of them fall out after giving birth. This is due to the fact that pregnancy can trigger all the hair on the scalp to move to the growth phase, so that no hair stays in the resting phase. Most women do not even have a single hair fall during pregnancy and infant they experience new hair growth as well. After the pregnancy is over, all the hair enters the shedding phase, due to which women experience hair fall. Hundreds of hair is lost every day instead of the dozens which fall naturally. This kind of hair loss is called a Telogen Effluvium, which usually occurs 3 to 6 months after birth, when the woman is usually breastfeeding. Women are often under the wrong impression that breastfeeding is the cause of hair loss, which is not the case.

Giving birth is a common cause of hair loss in women, just like undergoing a major surgery, illness, stress or traumatic event in life. In all these cases, hair loss actually occurs 4 – 6 months after the event, and the sufferer is unable to relate the old incident as a cause of hair loss, thinking that it happened too early to cause hair loss now, which is completely wrong. Hair loss follows this delayed pattern due to its slow growth cycle and men and women experience hair fall several months after the actual event.

Women experiencing hair loss after giving birth to a baby can treat the condition by taking Vitamin B12 shots and over the counter supplements including Biotin. Normally, 2.5mg of Biotin is required daily. Women should also continue taking prenatal vitamins along with lactating vitamins after giving birth and should maintain a healthy diet. If the hair loss problem is left untreated, it can last up to 18 months after child birth, which is a significantly long time period. After that, hair will come back to normal and hair loss will stop. The normal growth pattern of hair starts again and women only experience a few dozen hair falling each day instead of a few hundred.

Eating a healthy diet with lots of protein and taking all the essential supplements can help minimize this time period of Telogen Effluvium. However, if other factors like stress, anxiety and neglect in taking care of hair continue with the hair loss problem, it can lead to further hair loss and hair thinning in women. Getting your thyroid levels checked post-partum is also helpful as women experience fluctuating thyroid levels after birth. Drinking lots of fluid and taking enough sleep can also help reduce hair loss and thinning. Some women get a good hair cut which is more manageable and requires less care, so their hair looks short and healthy instead of long and thin. It is important to take the right steps at the right time to reduce hair fall after child birth. If hair loss continues after 12 to 18 months, professional help should be taken from a health care consultant.
