Few Fundamental Laws of the Science of Vedic Gemology

A person's karma account is the account of the person's past life deeds. This account is known by reading the chart of the person. Vedic astrology deals with nine planets. The chart has these nine planets indicated on it, which were present in a particular position in the heavens at the time of the person's birth. The planets have a deity, a person who is the personification of the planetary mass. Just as in the olden days, say, the Duke of Suffolk would be simply called Suffolk, he was the personified representative of that land, i.e., the land and the human were one inseparable being. Another example is the game of chess: it is the king piece which is the personification of the army - the king is taken the game is lost, regardless of what other piece is there on the board. Similarly, an ambassador is also known as the plenipotentiary for his state. Thus, the divine beings who reside on those planets are the plenipotentiary for those respective planets.

A gem is the personification of that planet’s lord and the planet as well. Thus the gem is linked to the respective divinity (the personality bearing lordship over the respective planet).

The planets are agents to heal or edit the karma account, to add things to it or subtract things from it. The wearing of the gems that the astrologer prescribes causes for these deities to be pleased with the wearer and they reward the wearer with that which the astrologer has indicated for that specific gem. The ancient Vedic astrological science mentions gems as remedies which directly add or delete the karma account itself. This is why astrology is the highest and most potent material science of all the ancient Vedic sciences which deal with the universes i.e., activities contained within the universes, in short, universal phenomenon. Since there are nine planets, there are nine gems in Vedic astrology which correspond to these nine planets.

The gems are the celestial instruments which cause for the planets to do the needful according to the client’s wants and needs. Thus the power of the gems is to edit the source of all things, the karma account of the client.

A computer program or AI or a machine, has not ability to reason neither it cares for you, it is a dead object. It will do whatever you ask it to do. As it is said about the nature of AI: if you ask an AI to reduce the traffic of the world, one of the options that it will consider and perhaps execute is to terminate all human life from earth since that is what it deemed to be the best and most viable option to reduce traffic from the roads. This is not how the instruments of astrology, i.e., the gems work. They are persons who reason. Thus, one should never verbally insult gems because they may take an offense and stop functioning or curse the wearer. They are not AI, they have RI, Real Intelligence. RI is a concept either not known to the scientists of the 21st century or they have not disclosed it to the public yet. Thus a gem is that RI, which shall never ruin its wearer at the cost of the wearer's desires. It will regulate the flow of the objects/statuses that the wearer wants in his life with a holistic vision of the past, present and future. E.g., if the astrologer prescribes a certain wealth giving gem to the client, the gem will certainly give wealth. However, if there is a life insurance policy on a beloved person in the client's life, the gem won't kill that beloved person and cause for the money to come to the client. The gem can understand this - it reasons and acts in such a way that won't do harm to the client because it can calculate what the client really wants, what is the best for the client and how to best achieve it. Thus the gem, unlike the dead AI of the world, cares for the client and reasons to do good for the client.

A good number of the species of life in the universe are capable of being simultaneously present at more than one point in the universe. The deities bearing lordship over the planets are present in their respective gems. They are non-human, mostly humanoid individuals, they couldn’t careless for punishing a human who goes against the universe’s laws. Similarly for them to confer say, something like peace of mind, a good husband, motherhood, good health for one’s children, a few billion dollars, etc to a human of earth, is a nano-scopic fraction of their full potential, for that they also couldn’t care less for not giving that as well. It works both ways.

The planet or to say the divinity appointed to that planet controls a certain relative segment of the spectrum of the karma account of any human of earth. The astrologer reads the chart and determines which part of the karma account is causing what problem or to say, what part of the karma account is in need of fixing to accomplish some objective or gain some thing in the world (as the client needs or wants). This is done by appeasing the planet's lord. This is done by the medium of the gems.

The gems are not ordinary gems that come from a jewelry-shop. They are technically, in the English language, called Vedic Astrologically Authorized Gems. An Vedic astrologer knows people who are connected to the mines - the mine owners, miners, gem sellers, etc from generations after generations altogether. These people who can understand with their abilities the difference between astrologically viable gems and the regular gems which are meant for the purposes of jewelry/fashion. Thus the gem mine owners and the procurers are important for they know with their supernatural abilities how to select a gem for the purposes of Vedic astrology. Such individuals work closely with the astrologer. The final selection is done by the astrologer because very gem is essentially unique and it, ‘calls unto the astrologer for it to be selected for a certain chart’. Thus it is not wise to walk into a jeweler’s shop and get a gem and start wearing it. It is a far more complicated science than that.

The astrologer who is prescribing the gem is, for a lack of a better choice of words, supernaturally linked to the chart of the client and to the gem which he prescribes. Thus the astrologer’s will has a major say in what functions of the gem will be, apart from their natural functions. This is the same as with Ayurvedic doctors or Vastu experts. If the patient insults the Ayurvedic doctor, the medicines prescribed by the Ayurvedic doctor, at best don’t work or at worst have a negative effect. The Vastu science related remedies do not work if the the client insults those remedies or the Vastu expert who prescribed those remedies.

Thus the gem that you get is like a friend. Yes, one may choose to pray to it, if one feels that type of a fervor. Indeed the gem can actually say things to its wearer either directly or from within the heart, they are indeed celestial living beings. As the months and years go by, the gem becomes one with it wears and they are a team. It fate is tied to the wear’s fate.

The chart determines the quality and carat value of the gem. This may differ for different charts. The effects of the gems are classified into primary, secondary and tertiary: Primary is specific for the person’s chart, secondary is gem specific and tertiary is money since all gems are also partial representative of the goddess of wealth and fortune, Laxmi. Thus all gems on their own give money to the wearer. It is seen that the basic return on investment, to use a modern phrase, is ten times the investment made.

Gems are to be worn in a specific metal. They can be worn in three ways: as a ring, as a pendant or just kept in the client’s home. Gems are to be worn on what is known as a muhurta, an astrologically approved time. The astrologer gives this time. They are to be worn by the client after the performance of a certain small and very easy to perform ritual. The astrologer will teach the client this ritual. Before the gem is given to the client the astrologer performs upon the gem a certain Vedic ritual, with Vedic mantras in the Sanskrit language. This, in Sanskrit, is known as the prānaprathisthā ritual or what can, in the English language be at best translated as, 'the life-force-inviting ritual'. It is by this ritual that the gem is made, siddha (rendered semi divine or supernatural) because the astrologer has caused for or to say invited the specific celestial demigod to come to the gem to reside in it. It is from that moment on, the concerned divinity resides in the gem.

Gems are to be passed from parent to child, so on and so forth. Coral and pearls last for a few hundred years for they dissolve bit by bit with water due to the fact that they are calcium products. The rest of the gems may last for thousands of years. Thus a gem is a dynastic investment. If the parent gets a gem from his prescribing astrologer and in the due course of time if the parent passes away, and if the same gem happens also to be prescribed to the child, then child need not purchase any other gem, so on and so forth for generations to come. The astrologer is to be consulted for the gems to be passed to other members of the family. However, the general rule is that they are to be passed from parent to biological child.

These three paragraphs indirectly answer the irreverent question of the mundane mind - if the gems are so wonderful, then the persons who deal in the gems, who store them in their homes must be billionaires by now? The gems need to be (Vedic) ritually consecrated by the prescribing astrologer, ritually worn according to the various instructions of the astrologer, reverentially treated by the wearer - it is then that the gem becomes enclosures for the universe’s divinities to reside in and work their blessing through and not other wise. The applier of the science, the teacher of the ancient technical knowledge, the guru, the master, the spiritual master, etc are the via mediums for a certain divinity to act in some mundane instrument. The divinity cannot be accessed without a connected-being. This is a recurring theme in all the Asian paths which aim at raising the self to a state of higher self, be it karate, Kung-fu, Jujitsu, prānic healing, Feng Shui, Chinese herbal medicine, Tai chi etc - there is no question of these paths/processes being practiced out of a DIY book. They all require a master to infuse the technique or the artifacts with certain, ‘blessings’ aka 'energy' aka 'empowerment aka 'prāna', etc. The principle remains intact and is taken from the Vedic sciences. Only a person in fatal ignorance of the culture, which goes along with these ancient sciences would think that a master and his blessings are not needed.

Do Krsna Devotees Need Astrology?

Pratignyā (objective of the essay): To clarify that bhakti, if it is less than the specific type practiced by the likes of Sukadeva Goswami (avadhuta-vaishnava), doesn't exempt the less than premabhakti-state souls from astrological influences.

Krsna bhakti is vedanta. Vedanta is a darshana of the Vedas. A darshana cannot replace dharma. Astrology, as any Vedic science (vastu, Ayurveda, silpakala, etc) is a part of dharma. Regardless of which darshan of the 6 darshans a person holds, he is not excluded from dharma. Dharma is simply the laws of the universe acting on the bodies of living beings (jivās) of the universe. Vedanta gives the goal to life. Dharma keeps the eight elemental bodies of all souls at peace while they are within the universes. Dharma is not for the souls who are embedded in the brahmajyoti or are residing in Vaikuntha. There is no ayurveda, palmistry, vāstu, vighnahartā-pujā, astrology, etc needed for a resident of Vaikuntha. 'A devotee is defined as someone whose life is for dharma and his dharma is for Vishnu', - Narada Muni, Chapter 94 - The Means of Destroying Sins, Canto 5 - Pātāla-Khaṇḍa (Canto on the Subterranean Planets), Padma Purāna.

Just because some acharya in his sojourn followed (applied in this life) remedy-A from the body of Vedic remedies and didn't apply B-remedy. Doesn't mean that remedy-B is not to be followed. This essay helps overcome this logical fallacy. Regardless of whether some Vedic scholar in some (tikā) purport said something about a certain Vedic science or not, as long as it is Vedic, the devotees of Lord Kṛṣṇa have no problem applying it in their lives. That which is Vedic is defacto approved by another acharya, Vedavyāsa and there is no question of challenging it based on anti-dharmic interpretations of the Vaishnava siddhānta.

Udaharana:

e.g., a question of the nature, 'Does our acharya approve the avapattikara or the hingvastak churna, for indigestion, according to his vaishnava siddhānt, which he taught?', is so foolish that it need not be entertained.

It betrays one's lack of understanding of the standard lifestyle and behavior of the dharmic people and that one is a newcomer to bhakti and whatever little dharma (science of functioning of phenomenon/universe) one has learnt in life is from the casual mentions of it in the bhakti-writings of the acharyas or the Bhagavatam. On top, if the questioner demands that he be shown in the books of the acharya the mention of the two Ayurvedic meds, one shouldn't entertain this silliness and thus add fuel to the fire of the ignorance of dharma by giving quotes from Vedic scholars' purports. Such a procedure (paddhati) is nonsensical. One needs to stop being a Vedanta/bhakti-fanatic and apply dharma where dharma is needed. The neeti says, 'yasya nasti svayam prajnya shastram tastya karoti kim, what will a person without intelligence do with the Vedic scriptures?' Thus as far as mentally normal dharmik people are concerned, this essay ends here.

Siddhānta (conclusion): One should follow whatever dharmic acts is in one's scope of following as per one's levels of faith/punya. Devotees of Lord Kṛṣṇa are dhārmika people, dhārmika people take the help of various Vedic sciences according to their capacities (practicalities). Dhārmika people, if they happen to be devotees keep in their hearts the prayojana, that Krsnaprema is the life-goal of the jivāmta in other words, Vaikunthāgamana (aiming to reach Vaikuntha after this life).

Nanda Mahārāja was trying to take advantage of the opportunity afforded by Garga Muni's presence, for Garga Muni was a great authority in this knowledge of astrology, by which one can see the unseen events of past, present and future. It is the duty of a father to understand the astrological position of his children and do what is needed for their happiness. Now, taking advantage of the opportunity afforded by the presence of Garga Muni, Nanda Mahārāja suggested that Garga Muni prepare a horoscope for Nanda's two sons, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. jyotiṣām—knowledge of astrology (along with other aspects of culture in human society, and specifically in civilized society, there must be knowledge of astrology); - Srila Prabhupada (Translation/Synonym to Srimad Bhagavatam 10.8.5)

It is the standard for any discussion (samvāda) among the followers of Srila Prabhupada that the purports are the highest pramāna (evidence). Thus that which follows, is but supportive evidence. The discussion on the matters ends with the mention of these two purports.

Srila Prabhupada said that we not try and be more of a paramhamsa than him.
Do devotees need to visit an ayurvedic doctor? But Lord Dhanvantari who is Lord Krsna's avatar as the master of the science of Ayurveda is Lord Krsna Himself so why not just worship Lord Krsna and all the benefits of ayurveda. This is not the judgment of the acaryas though the application of mundane logic makes it looks "reasonable". "Reason", i.e., tarka, the Mahabharata rejects when applied upon inconceivable subject matters, CC 2.9.195

Acintya means inconceivable. You cannot speculate how it is happening, how in the lotus flower there is so hard nail that immediately, within a second, it could kill a great demon like Hiranyakasipu. Therefore it is acintya. We cannot conceive. Acintya. And therefore Vedic instruction is acintya khalu ye bhava na tams tarkena yo jayet: "Do not apply your poor logic in the matters which is inconceivable by you." There is no logic that how lotus flower can grow nails. They say, "Mythology." Because they cannot conceive within their poor brain, they cannot accommodate how things happen like that, they say, "Mythology." Not mythology. It is fact, but it is inconceivable by you or us. It is not possible.

Misuse of astrology doesn't make it useless

The law of nature is so subtle that every part of our body is influenced by the respective stars, and a living being obtains his working body to fulfill his terms of imprisonment by the manipulation of such astronomical influence. A man's destiny is therefore ascertained by the birthtime constellation of stars, and a factual horoscope is made by a learned astrologer. It is a great science, and misuse of a science does not make it useless. Mahäräja Parikshit or even the Personality of Godhead appear in certain constellations of good stars, and thus the influence is exerted upon the body thus born at an auspicious moment. Bhagavatam Purport 1.12.12

Gour Mohan De, Srila Prabhupada's father, who Srila Prabhupada regarded as a pure devotee consulted an astrologer.

An astrologer did a horoscope for the child, and the family was made jubilant by the auspicious reading. The astrologer made a specific prediction: When this child reached the age of seventy, he would cross the ocean, become a great exponent of religion, and open 108 temples.

Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu consults an astrologer

TRANSLATION:
"Please tell Me who I was in My previous birth," the Lord said. "Please tell Me by your astrological computations." Hearing the words of the Lord, the astrologer immediately began to calculate.
PURPORT
Through astrology one can know past, present and future. Modern Western astrologers have no knowledge of the past or future, nor can they perfectly say anything about the present. Herein we find, however, that after hearing Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's order, the astrologer immediately began his calculations. This was not a facade: he actually knew how to ascertain one's past life through astrology....(Caitanya Caritāmṛta Ādi 17.104)

Some devotees complain that they visited a karmi astrologer once and it was useless

The astrologer should:

be very educated in the science
be very experienced
and most importantly have all good character as the scriptures prescribe, as mentioned here, right attitude towards the science and right intentions, right motivation

In other words, as Srila Prabhupada put, "Astrology can help if there is a first-class astrologer.*"

Astrology can tell what should be the profession of the child

Srila Prabhupada: According to the Vedic culture, immediately after a boy's birth astrologers should calculate what category he belongs to. Astrology can help if there is a first-class astrologer. Such an astrologer can tell what line a boy is coming from and how he should be trained. (Journey of Self Discovery, 7. Not just kings but ordinary people also consulted astrologers

So this astrological calculation were then; still there are. In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, when Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam was written, it was five thousand years before. It is stated there that in the beginning of Kali-yuga, there will be buddha-avatāra, incarnation. Vabhisekha [?]. Vabhisekha means "there will appear." These are śāstra, these are astrological calculation, everything perfect. The other day, when I was discussed about Sanātana Goswami, how even an ordinary hotel keeper, he kept an astrologer who told the hotel keeper that "This man has got eight golden dollars." Just see. This is astrology. Even a thief could be conducted, guided by astrologer, and what to speak of others. So that was their system in India. So that example is being placed here by Lord Caitanya that the Veda, that is astrology for your guidance. For your guidance, the scripture is your astrologer. He knows your future, he knows your past. So therefore you should consult, you should consult, for our guidance.

Is astrology accepted by our Sampradāya's Āchāryās?

The premise of the argument questions the intellect of the purvacharayas, thus it is a question is posed by a fool and need not be given an answer.

Jaya-hari: Prabhupāda?, this morning you talked about astrology in your lecture. Is this accepted in the Vedic scripture and by the gurus?
Prabhupāda: Oh, yes. Astrology means... That is also Vedic. Jyotir-veda. Jyotir-veda. That is also part of the Vedas. (break) The brāhmaṇas, they learn these three things: astrology and medicine. These two things. A brāhmaṇa is supposed to go to every householder's place, and he will inform, "Today is such-and-such tithi. The such-and-such thing should be done."
And if required, if somebody inquires about "Now I am going to that place. What will happen? Just find out the auspicious moment," so they will give him. Still it is current. It may be wrongly done or rightly, but the system is still there, astrologer. The king should be always accompanied by a first-class astrologer. (break) ...there is a whole street, both sides simply astrology. (break) ...good astrologers.

Lord Venkatesh Balaji orders an astrological report each day

भाषापतिः पठति वासरशुद्धिमारात् शेषाद्रिशेखरविभो तव सुप्रभातम् ॥
bhāṣāpatiḥ paṭhati vāsaraśuddhimārāt
śeṣādriśekharavibho tava suprabhātam ॥
"... Nearby is Brhaspati who is reading out the planetary position (called Panchangam) of the day"

The lord of Jupiter, Brihaspati, read's the day's planetary positions to the Supreme Lord Venkatesh Balaji every day. And we need more proof for being dharmic?

How to go beyond astrology?

Become a pure unalloyed devotee of Lord Krsna who is also an avadhuta e.g., Sukadeva, et al. Sukadeva Goswami has no need for taking any samskāras/upanayam, nor any ritual and also he doesn't wear clothes. Such a devotee is beyond "going to the astrologer": If you don't need any cloth, you don't need astrology as well.

But we have heard Srila Prabhupada say, “Krsna consciousness is beyond astrology, if you surrender"
Do note, 'if you surrender'. Self deceptive devotees who fancy themselves advanced are quick to catch the "beyond astrology" part and not the "surrender" part. This is called self deception.

Prabhupāda: The chanting will be there, but you cannot expect that people will chant like Caitanya Mahāprabhu. They cannot even chant sixteen rounds—(chuckles) these rascals, they are going to be Caitanya Mahāprabhu. ( Room Conversation Varnasrama System Must Be Introduced -- February 14, 1977, Mayapura)

On the off chance that you are really a pure unalloyed devotee of Lord Krsna...

Srila Prabhupada's father, a pure devotee took the pure devotee Srila Prabhuapada to an astrologer for having his chart made and predictions given.

Lord Krishna's (Lord Krishna is God) father took the Lord to Gargamuni for having his chart made and predictions given.

Yudhisthira Maharaja, the pure devotee, took his son Parikshita Maharaja, the pure devotee, to an astrologer for having his chart made and predictions given.

Whether one be a pure devotee or not, the dharma ordained in the universes for human beings says that there are some Vedic rituals, vidhis that need be done, astrological reading, consulting an astrologer is one of them. So is consulting a vastu expert for one's living situation, so is consulting a ayurvedic doctor for understanding the kapha pitta vata situation on one's body and understanding what type of food is meant for his body for his whole life. It is a matter of dharma and the pure devotees could have at anytime rejected these things but they didn't. Astrology and other Vedic sciences are given by (invented/formulated by) Lord Krishna Himself and not by some dakini follower of Chandi.

Srila Prabhupada gets an Astro-report from not one but two Vedic astrologers at the time of his departure

Abhirama: So I went to see the astrologer with Yasodanandana Swami, and he did more calculations on your chart.
Prabhupada: You can get on light.
Abhirama: So basically he explained when the difficult times will come, according to the planets. Then he made it very clear that beyond the planetary influence, it would be very difficult for calculations for a person in your position. For an ordinary man he can say very clearly. And he can say for you which planets will disturb, but he cannot say for sure how much they will affect, because being a saintly person, there is naturally some resistance to these influences. So he made that very clear, that you should not think that these are final. So he said, according to your birth, the longevity shows very clearly. And then he gave a date. The longevity is eighty-one years, five months and twenty-nine days, which means February 28, 1978, six months from now. This is according to birth and stars arrangement. But on this point he made it very clear that this was from your birth, this was set, but it can change. Due to pious activities, due to the hand of Krsna, this can change. So... And then he described that during the next six months, the first week of September, Saturn will pass over Ketu, and it will agitate the influence of Ketu even more. So the first week of September the resistance will go down, will become weaker. Then he mentioned that there may be some trouble from..., maybe financial or maybe from juniors, from subordinates. Then this period, if you can pass, through 1978, then there is four or five more years clear ahead, if you can pass through '78. This was what he said, that after '78 there would be four or five years which would be more or less clear of difficulties. He said that if you can pass through 1978, there after that there would be four or five years clear, without much difficulty. And he said according to birth arrangement, the fatal date is February 28, 1978, in six months. At that time there's what's called the completion of a Ketu mahä-daçä, which began at your birth. But he stressed several times that we should not take these calculations to be final on account of your position. He said these are for ordinary men. He said it is always the case that a man of spiritual advancement will have the ability to overcome his fate. He quoted the case of his father, who was in the Sri Sampradäya, and he was apparently very pious and he lived so many years beyond his fatal date. And even so many astrologers had given the calculation, but still, he went on because of... He said he would fast on ekadasi and so many days and so much japa, like that. So he said for a man of your position he could not even say for sure. He said that definitely the hand of Krsna would be involved. So like this, he seemed to have a very sober idea. And he was hopeful that the blue sapphire would have some beneficial effect, at least to relieve you to some degree. He thought that by now you should have noticed a little bit at least. [break] ...besides the gem, there is a good Ayurvedic physician. He can also relieve the effects. That they know the art if you can find the proper man. I inquired if there is a proper man in this district. He said he didn't know anyone in this area. He knows of a man in Delhi. I took his address, and I tried to contact him, but I have not yet contacted him. He was not available. However, we have contacted a man... We read the report to you the other night. Tamala Krsna read you when we were upstairs? He was suggesting the pearl and the oxidized gold and bark of Arjuna tree. That man is the chief physician of this big Ayurvedic hospital in Delhi. He's the chief resident physician there. He lives there at the hospital and he's in charge. He has expressed a serious interest in you, and he's a very, very pious man. He wants to come to visit Vrndavana. His wife is an Ayurvedic physician, he is the chief physician of the hospital, and there is another professor of Ayurveda. They all want to see if they can offer some suggestion. So on Sunday...
Prabhupada: Why not bring them?
Abhirama: Yes. On Sunday we have arranged. They will come for a visit of Våndävana, and they will come to see you, to see if they can relieve you of some difficulty. As far as we could find in Delhi, these are the most reputed men, and they are actively practicing and teaching. They are recognized.
Prabhupada: Make that arrangement. Yes. On Sunday?
Abhirama: Yes, on Sunday, Srila Prabhupada. Today is Thursday. So these were the major points, Srila Prabhupada. For six months there's trouble, especially in first week of September. And if you can pass through '78, then he sees four or five years ahead clear.
Tamala Krsna: That means divine intervention, Srila Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: The chart is given. The calculation there is finished. That doesn't matter. Rather, if I am finished now, it will be glorious.
Tamala Krsna: It will be what, Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: Glorious.
Tamala Krsna: Living will also be glorious.
Prabhupada: Yes. Let us see.... As Krsna desires. All right. Thank you. Would you like to send to that Navadvépa astrologer?
Prabhupada: You have got the janma?

This astrologer, this astrologer was a very big astrologer and when I was in service, Dr. Bose's laboratory, so Dr. Bose was treating one patient. He was vomiting blood. So he was treating as tuberculosis. Then he could not cure him after giving all medicine. Then he asked the astrologer, this astrologer who made my horoscope, "What is the matter? Panditji, can you tell?" So he calculated. He said, "You are making wrong treatment. He has got some sore in the throat. It is not heart." And he treated, he was cured.

About the donning of gemstones to help with astrological maladies

Srila Prabhupada is actually beyond astrology, yet as an uttama adhikari who is tasked with preaching and hence externally acting on the the madhayama adhikari platform he consults astrologers and wears the appropriate gems according to their prescriptions, since all of this is a regular practice under varnashrama dharma. Srila Prabhupada has the greatest gem, Lord Krishna, he doesn't need any gems to help him through a bad time, however to teach the rest of us by his personal example he does so.

Srila Prabhupada had asked us to consult an astrologer, regarding whether he should travel. This afternoon, Yasodanandana Swami, Dr Sharma, and Bhakti Prema Swami each presented a report from a different astrologer. I asked each to give his report separately, so that we could see how they agreed and differed. Bhakti Prema's was useless, Dr Sharma's was fair, and Yasodanandana's seemed the most reliable. All three agreed on one point: the next two months would be the most difficult of Srila Prabhupada's life, and traveling was to be avoided. The astrologer Yasodanandana consulted recommended the wearing of a blue sapphire. After hearing all the reports that forecast his future, His Divine Grace said, "So it is not hopeless. At least for five weeks, keep me very carefully. For the time being, no travel. Secure this blue sapphire and chant Hare Krsna."

No astrology will help when death will be near. There is no gem which confers immortality.
So astrology is never meant to replace the Vaishnava siddhanta only to compliment it in such a way that it amplifies the message of sampradāya's purvācharya, our previous acharyas and does not mute it. Vaishnavas are expected to perform devotional service unto Lord Krishna very nicely and to view astrology or any of the Vedic sciences as not something which is above Krsna-Bhakti. Thus if you see all scriptures dealing with any of the Vedic sciences, they start with an elaboration on the purusha sukta, i.e., a description of the creation of the universe from Mahavishnu to Lord Brahma and the planets etc. This is the tool to see all things and all Vedic sciences as an emanation from Lord Krsna and not separate from Him. However, what all modern i.e., non-Vedic scholars who engage in the study of any Vedic science do is that they skip the first chapter, which is the essence of it all. The essence being - how to see Lord Krsna in all actions. Without this, all Vedic sciences become instruments of māyā, meant to delude the conditioned soul further into samsāra - the cycle of repeated birth and death.

Siddhānta

As long as one is not a bhakta of the same level of bhakti as Nārada muni is, wherein when Hiranyakashipu tried to kill him with a sword, the sword went through Narada's body, one would be best advised by the vaishnava siddhānta to follow what is called the general rules of dharma in one's life.

How Not to Kill Your Bhakti by Using Astrology?

(What follows is for souls executing bhakti (devotional service unto Lord Kṛṣṇa) under the bonafide vaishnava sampradāyas/āchāryas)

The specific science of learning all Vedic sciences is that one starts with the source: janmādasya yatha are the first three words of the Bhāgavatam (Bhāgavat Purana). It is the Supreme Lord, Lord Kṛṣṇa who is the source of everything in all of existence - the realm beyond the brahmajyoti i.e., the transcendental realm of Vaikuntha and here in the material universes of the kārana ocean (causal ocean in which all the universes are buoyant).

How does a devotee look upon any material Vedic science, in this context, astrology?

He looks upon it from the Bhagavān outlook (darshana) as opposed to the paramatma-outlook or the totally non-Krishna conscious vaishnava sampradaya matāviruddha outlook i.e., bramajyoti outlook.
Astrology is Lord Krsna's orders.
When we follow Lord Krsna's order He becomes happy. This is the purpose of not just the devotee's life but the life and existence of all souls. When Lord Krsna sees that His devotee is following His order, in the matter of astrology, He becomes happy. It is that satisfaction of Lord Krsna that makes the whole science work. And the vaishnava has no business except for this understanding and that is sufficient for him to take up astrology and consequent remedies.

Do gems have power to help you?

Nothing is independently powerful from Lord Krishna. It is only because gems are created and recommend by Lord Kṛṣṇa, in the universe whose laws He has made, that these gems or any object in the universe has any power whatsoever. When an embodied soul wear those gems or takes any ayurvedic medicine for the matter, He is following Lord Krishna's order, this makes the Lord smile. It is that smile of the Lord that blesses the gem and bestows upon the wearer whatever the Lord had originally decided for that particular gem's effect to be. And this is the only vision that a devotee of Lord Krsna should have towards astrologically recommended gems. Otherwise if the devotee imagines that there is some power in some gem and that this power is something divorced from Lord Krishna...then...well...how do you define maya? Maya is that which is separate from Lord Krsna. So one should not turn something that Lord Krsna wished for to be used in his service (in the relative sense) into maya.

Lord Kṛṣṇa has give through the same heart from which we receive the bhagavatam.

How not to deal with the Vedic Astrologer!

Never come to the astrologer with the intent to test the astrologer. This is sinful and an appropriate sinful reaction will be gotten by such a samshayatma, doubtful soul. Jātaka should be yāchaka.

Cases of you forcing the astrologer in to doing what you want to be done

The patient tells the doctor, 'I will put the prescribed paracetamol in a glass of Coca-Cola and drink.' Now, putting Paracetamol in Coca-Cola will decrease the efficacy of the thing by, say, 20%, okay? But at least 80% Paracetamol is going in the patient's system. So now, if the patient is being so foolish, what can the doctor do? Doctor says, 'All right, okay, okay, do what you want, no problem, do it.' And the mind of the doctor thinks, 'All right, heck, at least the person will get 80% benefit of the Paracetamol.' Even though because of his childishness, foolishness, he is not getting 100%. 'All right, do it, go, what ever makes you happy!' So like that the doctor thinks. And the patient in his infinite folly feels that he's won over the argument but he has caused for, perhaps not his total doom but at least the efficacy of the treatment to drop! This should not be done by the patient. One should be wise.

Don't try and get into the role of the prescriber

If the doctor prescribes a pill of 100mg which costs 10$ then if you were to start making the bargain, 'Can't you reduce it a bit? The thing costs a lot. My budget is not that much'. This is not an arena to, 'get a good deal'. One should go to a flea market and avoid a medical practitioner's clinic for good. And if you try to emotionally force the matter, saying, 'Oh, 80mg, should be good enough right, please say, yes'. At this point you've taken the role of the doctor and are no longer the doctor's patient. You are now your own doctor. So what will the doctor say? He says, yes. But this is your own undoing. This is a totally foolish thing that some of the jātakās do. It is just an emotional thing where they are trying to get a stamp of approval in order to save a few cents. This is the most self-harming thing one could do. If you do that with a regular medical practitioner he will find his knowledge insulted. But this they do shamelessly with the astrologer. Thus no Carrier of any Vedic Science gets too close to the clients, because they will use the element of friendship to do themselves harm. One may be your friend but that by no means changes the dosage to a lower value which fits your budget. This is totally illogical. But Kaliyuga is not known for geniuses.
If a remedy in the market costs you a certain amount, say 10000$ and if you start to bargain with the astrologer that is the moment you are no longer the jataka, rather you are taking the role of the astrologer.

If a patient has fever and throat ache the doctor prescribes a particular medicine which he read about in his medical books. Even if by some action of the world's economics the pill may cost a million dollars still the prescription will not change. If the doctor changes his prescription he is a cheater and legally prosecutable for medical malpractice. Similarly the Vedic astrologer being an office bearer of the universe's government is liable for prosecution by the law of the universe, the judge being Vivasvan's younger son, Yama himself. If the Vedic remedy to a particular malevolence in the chart is such and such then it is so, no matter how financially impractical it may be or may not be. The bonafide practitioner of Vedic astrologer will give that prescription.

Suppose a doctor prescribes a pill, say, paracetemol of 500mg for your ailment. Now if the chemists of the world are cheaters and they sell you a pill which is 400mg of some placebo and only 100mg of paracetemol. It is not the doctor's fault neither is it the medical science's fault. So you will be getting only the effects of a 100mg paracetemol not that of the full pill. This is to be noted.

You can't debate over the laws of the universe.

If you ask any self respecting medical practitioner to prove the validity of medical science or medicines he prescribes or surgical techniques he would ask you to leave his clinic. To inspire faith in medical education is not the medical practitioner's problem, it is not even the State's problem. If you don't have faith in the laws of the state that is not the Judge's problem. If you act against the laws the authorities will take action. You can't walk in a court room and declare your disbelief in the State's penal code. The Bench is not obliged to inspire faith in you. It is assumed that you have faith in the State given the fact that you have sworn allegiance. However, this analogy is not totally suiting: the citizens of a State can vote their political representatives and change the penal code it self. This however will not work as far as the laws of the universe are concerned. It is designed by the Creator and your votes don't count to change His mind about the nature of a planet's influence on the chart or the finding of a cheaper remedy for the same.

The prospective student:

Must chant the gāyatri daily.

Must have read the Māhābhārata.

Must regularly recite the (four) vedas as a matter of sādhana.

Must have no avaidhya stri sangama presently or ever in the future.

Should not be interested in controlling the jataka's life.

Should not be interested in being being a replacement father or an uncle or a grandpa, etc in the life of the jataka.

Should not be interested in making money through astrology and in general. (Preferably (very practically speaking) should be born rich/ have no need to make money in life i.e., should have no money problems in life as it may practically make a person misuse astrology for his purposes in life though being poor is not in itself a qualification)
Should absolutely not harbor desires for fame and recognition. (Want to get your name flashed everywhere? Become a rockstar, leave astrology for good)
Should be free from petty ego (ahankar): "I'm a great astrologer. I did/know so much". (No making the 'Mighty look and despair'.)

Should have no desire for pānditya prakāshana.

Should have no desire to 'win debates' i.e., be a digvijayi pandita (the vidvān, person learned in the Vedas, has nothing to prove to anyone).
Should understand that he is a conduit for this ancient Vedic knowledge to flow through him.
Should have a basic understanding of the universe's structure as stated in Bhagavat Purana Canto 5.
Should have practiced brahmachārya for many years in life or if not then should be absolutely willing to from the day of training. (If married, the wife should be willing to share his principles, not that the wife wants a second car and goads the husband to charge more money from his clients)
Should spend all surplus money made from astrology in the service of the Madhva-sampradya or Ramanuja-sampradaya or Nimbarkar-sampradaya or Vishnu Swami sampradaya directly or indirectly, if not, then, for general causes of dharma.
Should have no ill founded critical attitude towards devotees of Lord Nārāyaṇa.

Should have absolute faith in all the Vedic scriptures. (Should not dare to use the word, 'mythology'. If a planet can govern your lungs, why can't Lord Brahma have 4 heads? And Varāhavatār come out of Lord Brahma's nostril and have a body humongous enough to put Earth on its tusk?)
Should not believe in Darwinism.
Should believe that all Vedic scriptures are coming from Lord Nārāyaṇa Himself and are thus transcendental and eternal, not that they were concocted by a bearded old man a few thousand years ago in a dry grass hut in some Indian village.
Should not have any political affiliations towards some political party of any nation.
Should be of a gentle and forgiving nature.
Should not be too emotionally attached to any relative (wife, parents, children, friends, etc).
Should believe that the Vedic scriptures are Lord Nārāyaṇa Himself.
Should have faith in either brahmajyoti, paramātma or Bhagāvan feature of Lord Nārāyaṇa.
Should have full respect for all 330 million demigods.
Should have no relationship with māyāvādis of India or abroad.
Should abide by that the concept of the soul and 'God' as explained by either Madhvacharya, Ramanujacharaya, Nimbarkaracharya or Vishnu Swami and their sampradāyas.
Should have no business whatsoever with the followers of the shāririka.
Should understand the difference between venerable saints ("holymen") and fake saints.
Should be courteous in dealings with ladies even if someone's a professional prostitute.
Should sleep and wakeup early.
Should have a high standard of personal hygiene (in the general Vedic sense).
Should shave the head twice a month and keep shikhā.
Should have a lifestyle which is simple not extravagant.
Should have some basic/working knowledge of the Sanskrit language.
Should not regard astrology to be a, 'parlour trick' for some cheap entertainment for friends after dinner but as one of the science given in the Vedas.

Should be fluent in the slokas of the Manu, Yajnavalka and Parashara.

Preferably must have attended a Vedic gurukul which was not a gurukul where the teachers taught Advaita.

Preferably be fluent in English and French.
Preferably be homeschooled.

Preferably should be recommended by his gurukul-acharya.

How astrologers cheat people using the Kaal Sarpa Dosha scare?

There is no evidence from the astrological scriptures of ancient India pointing to the definite existance of kala sarpa dosha being applicable to persons. Though there exists such a dosha in the context of the astrological charts of large masses of land or non-physical entities such as organizations. Any form of pooja, aartis, vidhis to remove the said dosha from a person's chart must be considered a total and obvious form of money making devised by nefarious minds bent on prostituting the pure and transcendentally sourced science of vedic astrology for their personal gains. Any astrologer who speaks of such yogas and poojas, etc (vedic remedial rituals) is unread in the astrological science, fooling not only you but also himself, at best and typically it's premeditated. None of the great giants of astrology speak of it. In fact we have that found it to be so that the astrologer is often in a financial partnership with the priests who perform such remedial rituals, taking a commission of the priest's fees.

We have figured it to be one of the primary tests in verifying whether the astrologer is a cheat or not, by asking our dear clients to know if the astrologer who they met previously mentions of kaal sarpa dosha. Simply ask your astrologer, "what do you think of the kaal sarpa dosha?", "Do I have the kaal sarpa dosha in my chart?" or "Dear Sir, is the kaal sarpa dosha for real?". You will get to know if he is an expert or a cheater.
