My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

I know him through my ex-gf, when he was the outlet manager of Coffeebean and Tea Leaf in Bukit Jambul Complex.

He was a very nice guy, fun to talk to, and friendly guy. He meant no harm to anyone, and he was very to everyone, his staffs loved him so much.

Then, he was transferred to AutoCity Coffeebean and Tea Leaf, that was when I seldom see him anymore.

I heard he quited the job in Coffeebean and Tea Leaf from a friend.

The recent news I had about him was this,

Tesco Manager Shot Dead In Robbery

BUTTERWORTH, March 18 (Bernama) -- The manager of Tesco Extra hypermarket in Seberang Jaya was shot dead while two others were injured in a robbery at the Poh Kong goldsmith shop in the hypermarket today.

S. Sathiasillan, 28, was shot in the chest and chin and died on the spot in the 10.15am incident while the hypermarket's retail manager, N. Ilangohvan, 26, and Poh Kong security guard Izat Hafiz Mohamad Saad, 27, were injured.

Penang police chief Datuk Ayub Yaakob said the four masked robbers broke the glass door of the goldsmith shop, which had yet to open, with hammers and escaped with 20 trays of jewellery worth R250,000 from the glass showcases.

After grabbing the jewellery one of the robbers shot the shop's security guard inside the shop before firing at Sathiasillan and Ilangohvan who had just arrived at the shop after being informed of the robbery, he told reporters.

The robber fired six shots from the pistol.

"Police found four empty shells at the scene and the security guard's gun missing," he said.

He said the robbers escaped in a Honda City car and a motorcycle together with two accomplices who were waiting outside the hypermarket.

Five workers who were arranging jewellery at the time were not injured.

"Based on information from the workers, the suspects were locals.

"We will view the closed circuit tv recording at the shop to identify the suspects," he said, adding that police had launched a hunt for the four.

A technical support life during this time... Part 2

When the time I reached there. He was in the office. There was only 1 computer there.

I confronted him. "So, can you show me what's the problem yo have with the system?"

"Well, it's kind of OK now. But can you have a look?".

I was kind of lost. He just called me, but there wasn't any problem with the computer system....

There wasn't any problem at all, then I asked him what seems to be the problem actually....

"Actually it happened once in a while, but it didn't happened today." He claimed..

.

Then what the hack he was rushing me for?

"I think you better do a hardware service, and I need to bring it back to my workshop to do a diagnose, if not the problem will keeps coming, and it will make your hard disk drive crash in no time," I suggested to him...

"Oh... How much would it cost if you do that for me?", "RM80, for the inspections, diagnose, and software troubleshoot if we found any", I told him.

"In that case, I will call you when I'm ready to let you do it, because I only have one computer in my office, and I need to use it everyday."

Damn, this was unlikely.

"Then I will call you again when I'm ready to let you repair the computer." SO, I left, without any payment, or whatsoever. It took me a 30 minutes drive to his place, and another 15 minutes to perform the checkup, and he played the fool out of me.

Yesterday, I called him again.

"Oh ya, Eugene, sorry ya, my brother-in-law knows someone that knows how to repair computer, he already fixed the problem for me, thank you for your time ya!"

I was wondering how this kind of sick bastard can sleep at night? I'm earn a living, as well as him... What if he was played of like me, how would he feel then...

That's why i said, my job, wasn't much different than being a prostitute...

"Wah, so old, dowan lah... go go go...."
"Ei, I wan Russian lah, not this lah...."

Don't misunderstand, I got it from the source which took this kind of service... :)

A technical support life during this time... Part 1

hmmm.... It seems to be quite some time I didn't post anything here... Feel sorry for myself... haha... I was helping my friend with his new forum, sort of... Anyway, I'm back for more to show...

It was kind of hard nowadays, looking at the market we have out there... everything just running to slow, or should I say crawling...

Then again, I'm not going to give up my day job, just because of what's happening now... I had been working so hard to gain the knowledge, and all the things I had to survive in this field, for almost 10 years... Bare in mind, I was being cursed, condemn, judged, when I went into this field in the first place.

One of the punk ass dare to say that I wasn't even know what I was doing when I started my 1st shop, look who's talking, a 3-year-cheating-customer experienced technician which was a guitarist before he become a computer technician... Kind of odd in his career movement? Maybe the his guitar sucks, or he was trying to cheat the audience into giving him money by playing the hypnotize music before but failed...

Speaking of which, being me, the PC repair guy, in this particular country, wasn't a bad idea. Yet, I felt that I was degraded with the jobs I done... but there are consequences, in any job, in any profession...

Normally my job is to solve problem, in computer stuffs, whether is the computer, the mouse, printers, even you lost your "important" files , I can help you get it back.

For the job I done, I charged about RM15 per hour, or RM60 per session of 4 hours job... kind of a good pay if you compare with the work in the Big M... but looking at the studies and exam that I had to take, my job is worst than being a prostitute, darn.....!

Let me put it this way, I understand consumers have the right to compare, and go for a lowest price, or maybe some you like the smile, over whichever reason, they have their RIGHT... But what about us? What about the service providers....?
The usual drill, let me show u an example... the whole process of approaching the job, from phone calls until the end

Customer (C): Hello... Are you the PC repair guy?

Me: Yes, I am. Anything I help you?

C: I have a computer in my office, which I was using all the time. I was trying to switch on the computer just now, but it show a dark screen and some lines of thing...

Me: Izzit stated there something like "Disk boot failure"? Or something like "system files missing?"

C: It's the system32 files missing!

Me: OK, do u have any important files saved in pc?

C: Of coz I do, I will died if I lost all those files!!!

Me: In that case, I need more time to solve your problem, because I need to check ur hard drive's condition, and see if the files is still inside ur hard drive, because sometime this kind of case happened, and you will have a lost partition condition, we better dont take the chance. I need to do it in my workshop. Izzit ok for me to come over to collect it?

C: Err, yes yes, you can come, how long u will take to come down here huh? Because I'm in a hurry.

Me: In that case, do you want to arrange appointment for tomorrow?

C: No No, you come now, just be quick...

Me: OK, please gimme ur office add...

Tech: Sir, the power supply is faulty. You'll need to replace it.
User: No way! Someone told me that I just needed to change the startup
and it will fix the
problem! All I need is for you to tell me the command.
Tech support::
10 minutes later, the User is still adamant that he is right. The tech
is frustrated and fed up.
Tech: Sorry, Sir. We don't normally tell our customers this, but there
is an undocumented DOS
command that will fix the problem.
User: I knew it!

the end of the CONFIG.SYS. Let me know how it goes.

User : It didn't work. The power supply is still smoking.
Tech : Well, what version of DOS are you using?

Tech : That's your problem there.. That version of DOS didn't come with
NOSMOKE. Contact Microsoft and ask them for a patch that will give you
the file. Let me know how it goes.
1 hour later.
User : I need a new power supply.
Tech support : How did you come to that conclusion?
User : Well, I rang Microsoft and told him about what you said, and he
started asking questions about the make of power supply.
Tech: Then what did he say?
User: He told me that my power supply isn't compatible with NOSMOKE.

NZ brewery offers beer for laptop

The brewery is reportedly offering a life supply of 12 beers a month

A New Zealand brewery is reportedly offering a lifetime supply of beer for the return of a stolen laptop.

Local media said the laptop was stolen from the Croucher Brewing Company in the central North Island city of Rotorua earlier this week.

Owners were desperate to retrieve the computer containing designs, contact details and financial information, the Rotorua Daily Post said.

They have offered free beer to anyone giving clues leading to its recovery.

Co-owner Paul Croucher said the company would provide a lifetime supply of about 12 bottles a month to anyone who could name the thief.

The company has back-up copies of the material stored on the laptop but these are not up to date, the newspaper said.

India to launch £7 laptop for poor

The Indian government is to unveil a £7 laptop computer in an ambitious plan to bring the internet revolution to its remote villages.

Officials said the country's top scientists from its Institutes of Technology in Bangalore and Madras – India's silicon valley – had developed the machines which will run on low power, with low memory but be able to connect wirelessly to the internet.

Higher education officials said a prototype of the new laptop will be unveiled in Tirupati this week and has been produced for £14, but with large production runs and support from major developers they believe the price will come down to ten dollars.

The machine can be charged with a 2 watt power input, has a 2 GB memory which can be enhanced and a configuration that can be upgraded and will be able to project from the monitor for use in local classrooms.

The project to develop the laptop was launched after officials rejected an approach from One Laptop Per Child, which aimed to offer pared-down machines for $100. Since then another UK-Indian research project has been working on a low-cost laptop which would run on solar power and be resistant to power-cuts.

Ministers are hoping the machine will help its plans to connect 20,000 colleges to its e-learning initiative to export urban education advantages to rural India.

"The idea is to create a device which is very low power, so that it can work at 2 watt range even in villages where power supply is a problem. Attempts are on to see how a solar-charged or dynamo-powered device can be developed," said R P Agarwal, Secretary Higher Education.

Sceptics said it was not clear how the government could manufacture the machines so cheaply, m and that they suspected a political stunt aimed at young voters in the election later this Spring.

"Malaysian University? Or Malay Only University, bang?", I said, then he juz smile. We all knw UiTM only takes Malays', and my personnel opinion, the standards were kind of low.

"Aina, pls come in," Din called through the intercom. "Don't lah u keep stepping on the "Malays' properties"" joke by Din, which was a Malay as well.

"Aina, pi buat dua copies," my fren waved to signal the documents on the table.Then we continue our conversation.bla bla bla//

"Din, I thought u told ur sexytary to make 2 copies of the document there, why she just walked out without taking it?"

He was curious as well, Suddenly there was knocking on the door, "Masuk", my fren replied.

There was Aina, with Dua Kopi-es.

"I took back what I said about UiTM", my fren said, trying to keep his tears from coming down due to the laugh.

I'm sure you understand what the title means... What do you think?

The distance between that "potential customer"s location and my office will be about 8km, and he requested me to check 1st, so that he can decide if he want to proceed with the repair or not. Mind you, I requested the customer to send to my office since he need to "confirm" the problem before he wanted to proceed with the repair. But he insisted me to travel over to his place as he thought it will be a bit "hard" for him to send to me.

I didn't mean to be rude, but I ask him back this question, "What if all my customers needed me to check their computer systems at their place before they decided to proceed to any of the repairs, let say 1 day about 10 customers, and end up they don't feel like doing the repairs, who is going to pay for my petrol?" He laughed... I thought he agreed with the conflict occurred.

Then he ask me how much I'm going to charge him if he cancel the repair once I reached his house and checked everything. I insisted that when he called up, there must be something wrong with the systems, and surely something need to be repair... Then I stated that my standard charge for house call service will be RM60 regardless the distance as long as in the Island.
He said I charged too high. He will let me do it, if I charge him RM20.

I apologize to the mother of earth, and the son of the bit*h, I told him to fork off and get someone else to do it for him.

What on earth was that? Gosh...

All of a sudden, I really would like to check with you people out there how much did your technician charge for walk-in service, and onsite home service. Is it I'm charging a NON reasonable price, or that moron is being a dick?

Resetting the Windows Vista User Account Password

In the evening, I got a call from one of my long lost customer. He got a 2 weeks old laptop, a Compaq CQ40 which he can't do anything with it because he forgot the password he set for his user account... His laptop was running on Windows Vista...
He told me he need the laptop urgently, as he needs the file for his meeting in the next morning...

I was quiet confidence to solve his problem, and told him to sleep tight after he passed his laptop to me...

When I 1st boot into the windows, it was locked, like what he said. I used to have a Windows Key software from Passware, which solve this kind of problem. SO I got it out and give it a try... It seems that the software only usable from Window XP to Windows Vista which runs without the Service Pack 1 update... Gosh.. It wasn't as simple as I thought it was then...

I started to scratch my head and look around the Internet... God bless... I found a quite interesting tool when i was browsing around, which I think I want share with.. it's called the Trinity Rescue Kit...

U need to download the .ISO file in the 1st place, and burn it into a cd. Any common CD burning software will do. It's about 130MB... It took me about 20min to download the whole file... and burn it into cd... Bare in mind as the TRK will be in Linux base.. so beginners please be extra careful.

What u need it to do next will be boot with the CD that u created by setting the boot order, if u are not fimiliar with the procedure, u can check it out here...

After u boot into the disc, the 1st screen you will see will be this,

You just have to press "Enter" and boot with the default selection.

Then the startup files will be loaded, as u can see from this screenshot

After TRK finished the boot up, it will comes to the command line,

[root@trk]:(~)#

here I'm going to explain the procedure to reset the Account Password, so it will be solely on this subject.

In the command line, type

winpass -u USER_Account_Name

The USER_Account_Name will be the account u wan to reset, if u wan to reset your Administrator account's password, u will have to type in

winpass -u Administrator

If u don't know wat user_Account_Name u have, u can list all your user by typing

winpass -|

Press enter when after u typed. U will see this on the screen,

Windows NT/2K/XP installation(s) found in:
/sda1/Windows
Make your choice or ‘q’ to quit [1]:

Just press "enter".

Then u will be given a few options. I will recommend u to Blank the password.

After u choose your option, just press "y".

Finally, u just have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del, TRK will automatically unmount all the files, and eject the cd, then restart the system.

There is an air of silence everywhere. No doubt its CNY ., other than youngsters the atmosphere in Penang appears very calm. Very slow boot

I fixed the video problem now tghe computer takes 10 mins to boot to XP. The dell screen comes up immediatelt followed by a black scrfeen for several minutes then followed by the windows bars. after several more minutes it boots to xp and rjuns fine.

Bruce, the Dell OptiPlex GX260 normally will be equipped with a PC133 DDR1 128MB RAM module. It is recommended that you upgrade to higher memory bus DDR1 memory module, for example, 512MB/1GB DDR 1 running on 266 MHz to 533 MHz.

I need you to try this, but be very careful as this will mess up your system.

1st, you need to boot into your windows. After you are in there, open the Registry Editor but going to Start - > Run, and type "regedit", without the inverted comma.

Once you are in there, go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

on the right side of the screen, you will see a EnablePrefetcher,

set the value by double click on it, and insert the value "2", without the inverted comma.

0 = no prefetch
1 = Application
2 = Boot
3 = Application and Boot.

Try this and re-calculate the time you need to boot into the windows.

Before I continue, I have to tell you that upgrading the BIOS firmware required extra care.

U need to check if you r using the correct firmware or not. If you are not sure, you can download it here.

after you have the correct files, you need to have the correct environment to upgrade the firmware,

here's the instruction to make a bootable USB Pendrive for the BIOS firmware upgrade.

When you are boot into the DOS environment, you will see the A:\ prompt, you need to type in this in order to let the upgrade to proceed,

Hey hey hey, 2008 going to be finished... here comes 2009...

Well, 2008 wasn't a good year for me, neither will 2009. But I think a lot of great things happened during year 2008. For instance, our Penang State Government has been replaced with a new 1, rather than those long gone Gerakians... Malaysian Government has a stirred up, as 5 states were lost by the ruling party...

All this great things happened for reasons... for good, or bad... we will see, in 2009.

But for me, well, I'm just a little Penangite that migrated from Klang about 15 years ago... I have to agree that Penang is a great place to stay, and the environment wasn't so bad, other than all the Mat "Show-off" Rempit, and some of the "Too Fast Too Furious" Wanna-be, overall, everything was incredibly great.

In Penang, we strongly inherite with the AmE (American English) and BrE (British English) standard. Not juz the language, even the calture. First of all, our fast lane in Penang will be on the left, not the right, like the USA, when our traffic laws were exactly like the British... Cool huh? You have to agree with me, that Penang drivers were the best , after India's, of coz.

In Penang, you can drive at 25-30 KM/h on the fast lane as you like. If anyone on your back horn or highlighted you, you can just ignore and move on as it's your road. Enough of the traffic in Penang, if there's a chance, I will covered the traffic situation in Penang and post it here, especially midnight.

Meanwhile, our Tourist Police, those with the checkered hatband, dark blue shirt and trousers and a red and blue badge (with the letter "I" for information) displayed on the breast pocket, suppose to assist tourists in Penang, but if they donno how to speak English in the 1st place, how they are goin to assist the tourist, since English is the international language. In this case, no AmE or BrE standard.

Well, this is just part of the amazing things we have in Penang. But I'm just the Pc Repair Guy, I have my things in mind, I always mind my own business. I hate those people who like to make thing personal, but when the issue became big, they will be the 1st to vanish before you even knew it. That's how things work here... You Come, You Kacau, You Berambus., there rest will be Buat Tak Tau.

Just back from work... at this time... Gosh... life is tough as always... Why God din gimme a sign?

There is an old saying, "when good deeds come with sacrifices..."
Doing good deeds is admirable, but how far we can go?

Speaking of which, I met up with this customer. I suppose to fix his computer...

Obviously, he's system went blackout all of the sudden. He din do anything, and he din know what happened to it. Well, then again, if he do, he won't come to me.The system just have the plain fan's spinning sound after he tried to switch on again. No display on the screen at all, and no beeping sound or whatsoever.

After a brief checkup, it seems that his system was having a short-circuited mobo. He wasn't surprised. He told me it happened before. Then I checked the warranty date, it was stated "17-03-08". That was odd. Then I check again, it seems that other parts' warranty date, it was "14-08-07".

Then I realized he changed his mobo before, for the same problem. He expected me to tell him how much would I charged for a new mobo. But instead, I told him I was going charged RM50, not for a new mobo, but the workmanship to make the machine works again. He was curious. Well, he might be thinking that "this punk maybe donno what he is doing....." or something like that...

I explained to him that the mobo comes with a 12 months warranty, which he entitled to claim for, either a new one, or send in for a free repair. He was confused, as what he understands, his last mobo was replaced during the 17-03-08, which was the date on the new mobo's warranty sticker, from the retailer who sold him the system. They told him that it was not covered by the warranty for such cases.

He required further explanation of the case happened to the system.

I showed him what was the problem. It was those red, small, thingy washers under the screws that tighten the mobo to the case.

I unscrewed all the screws and removed all the washers. "Chiang chiang chiang", that's the sound effect I made, after I fixed back the mobo to the case without the washer, and pressed the on button. The machine was alive again, like it was awake from a coma... Everything was running just fine... It booted into the system just like it always do...

Now the best part. My customer wasn't feeling too happy about it. He felt he was cheated. I believed so... (muahahahaha) But not me, it was the previous technician...

He said that the last technician stressed that the mobo wasn't covered with the warranty with this kind of case, and it was unable to be repaired, then a new mobo replacement was indeed a necessity. He spent RM250 for the new mobo, which only cost RM165, and another RM80 for the workmanship. Gosh.... I do feel sad for him.

Anyway, I showed him that his system was working fine, and let him checked whichever things he needed to check... and he was satisfied.

Then, bad thing happened. When I produced him with the bill of RM50, he asked for discount. He think that I should only charge him RM10 or RM20 for the service. This will be the time that I will say "God please help me to hold myself".... Well, I insist on the RM50. Well, he paid me the money, unwillingly.

So, there's the thing again, "Doing good deeds is admirable, but how far we can go?"

Well, we always being thought to look forward, and never give up because of the past. I think he was thinking likewise, "Don't think about how much I lost before, think about the discount I'm going to get now.." Maybe, who knows.... hahaha

I always stick with my principals, right skills with the right tools, right way with the right deal. That's how I teach my students as well, if they want to be the PC Repair guy.

To be frank, I hate those technicians that messed up the name, and the professionalism we have, as the real technician. Clearly, they din grad' as a electronics/electrical , nor computer engineering students.
They don't even know where to start, or how to fix up a mobo properly, and yet, blame everything to the mother nature... haha I know what I was talking about, if you encountered some of those technicians that actually tell you that it was because of your luck, or maybe God's punishment..

But I pity them as well. They never choose to be like that, it's the educations and trainings they had that made them this way. Yup, I'm blaming the colleges and the skill work training centres, even the government recognized M..K.

OK, enough say now, gonna get some sleep, got to work in the morning again... More to come ya...

Well this will be the 1st post... Kind of awkward to start it now... but who cares, right... Then again, I'm not very good in writing, nor blogging... Just try to give it a shot...

Speaking of which, I just realize that I'm going to be jobless in no time... hmm... It's like kind of normal, and tense, for the people in Penang now...

Recession, recession, recession.... That's what's happening now, or going to happen around here, I believe other places as well, looking at we are staying in the same planet... But the funny thing will be, why our Malaysian government still insist of our country are doing just fine? And our Deputy Prime Minister still telling recession won't be happening in Malaysia... darn..

Even a pc repair guy like me suffer the same scenario, how could our government not aware of what the Malaysia citizens are suffering now...

Ok, I think enough of the complains of life now. Actually I have no right to complain at all. I guess the "mango-lover" was right, I just have to "ubah cara hidup" (Change the way of living).

I might have to start now, by making myself a politician, instead of a pc repair guy...
