With so many PC*MILER customers, there are bound to be a few frequently asked questions that come across our technical support teams’ desks. We enlisted one of our top Technical Support Managers to give us the inside scoop on today’s 5 most common support questions.

1. How do I move PC*MILER to a new/different computer?

Each PC*MILER installation has a license.  A PC*MILER license can be moved to a new/different machine at any time.  But, to do so, it must first be deactivated from its current machine.

2. When using a Multi-User Network license, how can I see where my licenses are used?

On the server, PC*MILER has a log file that tracks each machine that has PC*MILER installed. The log displays how many licenses each machine is currently using in real time.

3. How can I add Custom Locations/Places into PC*MILER?

PC*MILER gives you the capability to assign your own custom names to an unlimited number of locations in the PC*MILER database, and optionally to assign them to custom categories. Follow the steps on page 94 of the User Guide for step-by-step instructions.

4. Where can I find system requirements and installation instructions?

Before installing PC*MILER, please make sure that you have the required hardware and software configuration. All PC*MILER software, databases and auxiliary files are provided with the PC*MILER installation.

System Requirements:
PC*MILER is currently available through the following platforms:

• Windows 7, 8 and 10* running in 32-bit compatibility mode as well as support
  for 64-bit native applications on Windows 7 and 8

5. Why did my license expire (-706 Error)

The PC*MILER license is tied to the Hardware ID of the machine it is licensed to.  This is done to prevent piracy of the software (i.e., stop the ability to install 1 license on multiple machines).  If the hardware configuration of a machine is changed, that will cause the license to receive a -706 error.  When a user receives this error they should contact PC*MILER Support for assistance.  To avoid this issue, a user can deactivate their license prior to making their hardware changes and then re-activate once the changes are complete.

In 2015, ALK excelled in all areas of product, data, development and design. Together we executed a year of new product features, functionality and capabilities to provide solutions for safe, more compliant and efficient routing, mileage mapping and navigation.

We kicked off the year by introducing a new Weather Alerts module for ALK Maps, which not only notifies fleet managers or dispatchers when impending weather systems may impact current or future routes, but allows for visualization of those weather conditions overlaid on a map of the route plans. Pre-plan HOS breaks: With the increased Hours of Service (HOS) mandates the trucking industry has recently seen, there is a heightened focus on when and for how long drivers can schedule breaks. Without proper calculations and insight, some drivers are forced to make these decisions themselves, leading them to choose the wrong location or break for an incorrect amount of time, ultimately impacting their scheduled delivery times. Fleet Managers or dispatchers can utilize pre-planning systems that factor break times directly into the drivers’ planned routes.  This eliminates any pressure the drivers feel on making impactful decisions.

Be aware of impending weather: Driving a vehicle in an area affected by severe weather conditions is stressful for any driver. Using a visualization tool in the back office where weather overlays are displayed directly on a map along with current or future route plans allows fleet managers to accurately assess potential delivery or safety impacts. Recently, Transport America implemented such an alert system, setting up automated emails to be sent directly to Fleet Leaders whose trucks are affected by weather systems and when and if conditions change. Brings Hours of Service compliance for enhanced route planning and improved asset utilization

Princeton, N.J. – June 30, 2015 – ALK Technologies, a Trimble Company and global leader in GeoLogistics^® solutions and navigation software, today introduced the latest version of its PC*MILER^® truck routing, mileage and mapping software. PC*MILER 29 allows for greater comprehensive planning in the back office and provides new tools to enable transportation companies to minimize overall operational costs, such as a new HOS Manager that factors Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Hours of Service (HOS) regulated breaks directly into the route.

With PC*MILER’s HOS Manager, mandatory HOS breaks are incorporated during trip planning, allowing transportation companies to clearly understand actual travel times and distance traveled. Access to this more accurate mileage information can significantly improve asset utilization as fleets can more efficiently manage their assets and ensure they’re maximizing revenue per day. When planning a route, dispatchers can easily identify if a driver will be in violation as well as identify an appropriate stop to break if needed. They can even view a list of amenities located at a stop to assist in choosing the best break location.

Successful integration provides TMW Systems customers updated truck-specific routing and mileage data to better manage their operating costs

Nashville, Tennessee – September 22 – ALK Technologies, a global leader in GeoLogistics® solutions and navigation software, and TMW Systems, a leading provider of enterprise transportation management software, today announced that the latest version of PC*MILER’s routing, mileage and mapping software, PC*MILER® 28, is now successfully tested and approved for use with multiple products within TMW’s portfolio of transportation and fleet management products.

The PC*MILER 28 integration covers the following TMW Systems products:  IDSC ExpertFuel®, Appian DirectRoute, Innovative IES®, Access and Access Plus®, TL2000®, TMWSuite® and TruckMate®software solutions .   PC*MILER’s street-level routing, mapping, multi-version switch and hazmat routing modules have also been tested and approved.
