As Winter Storm Stella is in the process of delivering more than a foot of snow to the east coast of the United States make sure your fleets are prepared for any unpredictable weather conditions.

With large storms such as this one, weather conditions can go from manageable to a complete white out in a matter of minutes. Hazardous weather will likely not only delay prompt delivery of goods but more importantly put drivers and pedestrians at a higher risk of accident. Keeping your drivers updated on potential weather conditions can be the difference between a smooth delivery and a disastrous one.

Many fleets currently depend on manually reviewing weather reports to re-route drivers around these harsh weather conditions. This forces back office support to constantly be up against the clock and make critical decisions based more off of guess work than certainty.
Take some of the guess work out of the equation with PC*MILER|Weather and ALK Maps’ Weather Alerts. You can now view radar and weather alerts directly on the map and identify when your route plans are scheduled to travel through storms like Stella.

You asked, we answered.

With so many PC*MILER customers, there are bound to be a few frequently asked questions that come across our technical support teams’ desks. We enlisted one of our top Technical Support Managers to give us the inside scoop on today’s 5 most common support questions.

1. How do I move PC*MILER to a new/different computer?

Each PC*MILER installation has a license. A PC*MILER license can be moved to a new/different machine at any time. But, to do so, it must first be deactivated from its current machine.

Detailed instructions can be found on page 39 in the User Guide.

User Guide – Click Here

2. When using a Multi-User Network license, how can I see where my licenses are used?

On the server, PC*MILER has a log file that tracks each machine that has PC*MILER installed. The log displays how many licenses each machine is currently using in real time.

Default Location: C:\ALK Technologies\PCMILER30\App

File Name: pcm_server.log

3. How can I add Custom Locations/Places into PC*MILER?

PC*MILER gives you the capability to assign your own custom names to an unlimited number of locations in the PC*MILER database, and optionally to assign them to custom categories. Follow the steps on page 94 of the User Guide for step-by-step instructions.

User Guide – Click Here

4. Where can I find system requirements and installation instructions?

Before installing PC*MILER, please make sure that you have the required hardware and software configuration. All PC*MILER software, databases and auxiliary files are provided with the PC*MILER installation.

System Requirements:

5. Why did my license expire (-706 Error)

The PC*MILER license is tied to the Hardware ID of the machine it is licensed to. This is done to prevent piracy of the software (i.e., stop the ability to install 1 license on multiple machines). If the hardware configuration of a machine is changed, that will cause the license to receive a -706 error. When a user receives this error they should contact PC*MILER Support for assistance. To avoid this issue, a user can deactivate their license prior to making their hardware changes and then re-activate once the changes are complete.

Princeton, N.J. – June 28, 2016 – ALK Technologies, a Trimble Company and global leader in GeoLogistics® solutions and navigation software, today announced that the 30th version of its PC*MILER truck routing, mileage and mapping software is now available. PC*MILER 30 brings a number of pre-trip planning enhancements, including a unique weather visualization tool to enable transportation companies to understand the weather’s direct impact on their business.

“Our goal is to continue to develop technology that empowers our customers to make confident, informed decisions to boost their bottom line and help ensure fleet safety while on the road,” said Kara Jo O’Neil, senior product manager at ALK Technologies. “With access to critical insight into weather conditions during route planning, dispatchers can make knowledgeable decisions to steer drivers on safer routes, if necessary, as well as understand the possible delays due to severe weather conditions.”

In PC*MILER 30, dispatchers can toggle the display of weather radar and alerts as well as visual cloud layer. Current weather-related events are clearly identified on the map and alerts are optionally provided if the generated route plan intersects with an alert zone. Dispatchers can then analyze the alert type, effective and expiration times, certainty, severity and urgency ratings in order to make critical decisions about routing drivers around hazardous areas or notifying customers of potential delays.

PC*MILER 30 also brings the ability to:

Set a maximum governor road speed for more accurate ETAs and drive times

Factor in new government mandated 60/70-hour-duty limits for Hours of Service (HOS) compliance and to maintain low CSA scores

Insert an HOS compliant stop or break location directly into the route with predefined, custom places for quick pre-planning

Access the latest street-level maps of North America with updated addresses, roadways, and commercial restrictions

Send an optimized stop list from PC*MILER Interactive directly to a driver through ALK’s standalone CoPilot Truck in-cab navigation app, helping to ensure legally compliant executed truck routes that eliminate manual address entry and maximize driver miles per day

“We’re proud that a product created 30 years ago continues to evolve with the industry’s needs while still maintaining its original intention of providing transportation companies a trusted source for reliable and accurate truck routing, mileage and mapping, “said Michael Kornhauser, executive vice president and general manager at ALK Technologies. “PC*MILER’s longevity is a true testament to the importance of building software with a strong foundation and a focus on innovation driven by the voice of our customers.”

PC*MILER runs on Microsoft Windows, UNIX and Linux platforms as well as IBM AS/400 (iSeries) and mainframe computers. PC*MILER is also available as a web-based application for access anywhere, anytime. It can also be seamlessly integrated with leading transportation and supply chain management systems.

Have you heard about CoPilot Truck? It’s a route planning and voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation app for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets powered by the same PC*MILER routing engine. So, drive the same routes and bill the same miles that you just planned in the back office. PC*MILER can even send routes directly to a device running the CoPilot Truck app.

CoPilot Truck has offline navigation, meaning the maps are stored directly on your device. So, you won’t be incurring high data costs.

Princeton, N.J. – February 10, 2016 – ALK Technologies, a Trimble Company and global leader in GeoLogistics® solutions and navigation software, today announced the latest addition to its suite of transportation solutions, PC*MILER|Rates. Developed with leading transportation management software provider 3GTMS, PC*MILER|Rates provides shippers, brokers and third-party logistics providers (3PLs) with quick, accurate real-time rate calculations and options for multiple less-than-truckload (LTL) and small package carriers. This provides customers the information to assist in carrier selection and efficiently manage the cost side of their transportation services.

“Shippers, brokers and 3PLs need to be able to quickly and easily compare rates between carriers to make the best decision for their business,” said Bill Maddox, vice president of sales, ALK Technologies. “Working with 3GTMS, we are pleased to provide a service that enables companies to efficiently manage their carrier contracts and determine exact pricing on demand.”

With PC*MILER|Rates a company’s existing carrier contracts are uploaded directly into the system, erasing the complexity and hassle of the rate setup, and are continuously available for immediate calculations. Rates are calculated based on account tariffs, freight class, total weight and accessorial fees, allowing shippers, brokers and 3PLs to identify a true cost for billing, auditing and accurate reconciliation.

“All logistics professionals can drive benefits with fast and accurate access to their rating options,” said Mitch Weseley, CEO of 3GTMS. “Working with ALK on PC*MILER|Rates makes a new level of efficiency and usability available to more companies.”

PC*MILER|Rates populates the carrier and rate information by first having the user enter their shipment information including weight, freight, class, and origin/destination. The cloud-based solution then simultaneously retrieves multiple rates and detailed carrier information. Rates can be chosen immediately or exported for additional analytics or research. PC*MILER|Rates can be used as a standalone service or integrated with any TMS system.

An educational session on PC*MILER|Rates will be held at ALK’s Interactive Training Program on Thursday, March 24th at the Dallas Marriott Las Colinas in Dallas, Texas. View the event website for more information and to register.

Together we executed a year of new product features, functionality and capabilities to provide solutions for safe, more compliant and efficient routing, mileage mapping and navigation.

We kicked off the year by introducing a new Weather Alerts module for ALK Maps, which not only notifies fleet managers or dispatchers when impending weather systems may impact current or future routes, but allows for visualization of those weather conditions overlaid on a map of the route plans. Since then, we’ve deployed ALK Maps in Europe and integrated ALK Maps into numerous partner platforms. As ALK Maps continued to expand, we also developed our CoPilot Truck in-cab navigation solution with additional functionality.

We now have support for vehicles of all sizes that provide optimal routing for Light, Medium, or Heavy Duty vehicles. Drivers can enter their custom vehicle dimensions and will be alerted if those dimensions require a permit to help avoid errors and ensure compliance when creating routing profiles. Keeping driver safety as a main focus, we also added a new darker in-cab user interface on the display to minimize ambient screen glare during the day or night, reducing distraction.

Mid-year we introduced PC*MILER 29, and took into consideration industry-wide issues, trends and regulations to ensure we’re delivering a product that meets the needs of our customer base. PC*MILER 29 introduced a new HOS Manager, which factors in required breaks and stops directly into your route plan helping to stay compliant with government regulations and allowing our customers to maximize revenue by getting the most of out every mile driven.

Our CoPilot Professional integrated navigation and advanced routing optimization platform continues to expand into new vertical markets as fleets from Agriculture to Emergency Services adopt it as part of their mobile workforce strategy.

We ended 2015 by announcing ALK Maps new platform features, including traffic incidents and drive time polygons, as well as CoPilot Truck’s remote configuration capabilities for tighter control over the routes drivers follow, eliminating the need for associated driver interaction.

We’re also excited to continue to deliver safe, reliable navigation to consumer drivers worldwide. This year we celebrated 16 million downloads of our CoPilot mobile navigation apps.

Our goal is to provide customers with streamlined solutions that provide efficiency, productivity, and overall asset utilization. ALK’s customer-first mentality allows us to achieve this goal year after year.

Here’s to another successful year in 2016!

Whether it’s snow, rain, sleet, or a wintry mix, it’s important to stay informed and make appropriate decisions when traveling this winter season. Safety is essential. As we enter the unpredictable winter months, consider how using technology can help you stay safe for the roads ahead.

Consider this: You’re driving along in your semi, transporting XYZ across the Midwest, when all of a sudden you’re in the midst of a fury of freezing rain. You know you shouldn’t continue driving since the roads are now getting slippery and dangerous, but where can you stop and park until the storm passes? Mapping and in-cab navigation technology can help you locate and navigate to nearby Points of Interest (POIs), such as rest areas, truck stops, and parking locations on safe, truck-legal roads. Drivers can also be notified of traffic buildups caused by weather-related accidents and select an alternate route to avoid high-risk areas.

Knowledge is Power: For back office planners, technology is available that allows for real-time weather alerting, notifying dispatchers if planned or future routes will be affected by impending weather conditions. With this insight, decisions can be made to re-route, delay or modify plans to keep drivers safe and customers up-to-date on delivery times.

Technology plays a key role in the transportation industry and provides powerful data insight for better decision making. Using technology to address weather-related issues during the winter is key for operational success. It also ensures we keep our precious commodities safe, the most important being our drivers.

And for everyone traveling on the road this winter, here are some helpful winter driving tips to keep in mind to avoid any surprises in your travels.

Safe travels!

Situations like getting lost, being late to a delivery, or driving in unsafe weather conditions, can have a huge impact on a driver’s attitude and stress level. Can you imagine the pressure of getting thousands of dollars worth of goods delivered safely and on time to keep customers satisfied?

Stress is the result when one has to deal with change and can create substantial effects on the body, such as:

Headaches/migraines

Upset stomach

Elevated blood pressure

Loss of sleep

Fact: Approximately 1/4th of U.S. commercial truck drivers on America’s roads report experiencing sleep apnea.

Alleviating some of the day-to-day stress can lead to increased job satisfaction and better retention overall. Let technology help! Here’s a few situations where using technology can lead to less stress.

Use in-cab navigation: it’s an instant relief to drivers! Using truck-specific, voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions decreases the likelihood of a driver missing a turn or taking a non-truck legal road. Navigation provides more accurate ETAs and can even go as far as to communicate with the back office for real time updates, eliminating manual calls. Drivers want to drive, not plan!

Pre-plan HOS breaks: With the increased Hours of Service (HOS) mandates the trucking industry has recently seen, there is a heightened focus on when and for how long drivers can schedule breaks. Without proper calculations and insight, some drivers are forced to make these decisions themselves, leading them to choose the wrong location or break for an incorrect amount of time, ultimately impacting their scheduled delivery times. Fleet Managers or dispatchers can utilize pre-planning systems that factor break times directly into the drivers’ planned routes. This eliminates any pressure the drivers feel on making impactful decisions.

Be aware of impending weather: Driving a vehicle in an area affected by severe weather conditions is stressful for any driver. Using a visualization tool in the back office where weather overlays are displayed directly on a map along with current or future route plans allows fleet managers to accurately assess potential delivery or safety impacts. Recently, Transport America implemented such an alert system, setting up automated emails to be sent directly to Fleet Leaders whose trucks are affected by weather systems and when and if conditions change. This allowed managers to notify drivers ahead of the impact or safely re-route them if necessary, alleviating driver anxiety. (Read Transport America’s Case Study)

In the unpredictable industry of trucking, ALK Technologies strives to create solutions that help drivers navigate, manage their hours of service, and avoid unsafe weather conditions. In decreasing overall driver stress and anxiety, the ultimate payoff is safer roads for all travelers.

Increasing efficiency and safety are always at the top of the list for companies operating in the patch. As highlighted in the recent Trimble news release announcing their new Oil and Gas Services Suite, there’s very powerful technology available today for managing the transportation of fleets and equipment servicing well sites in the oil and gas industry.

Why is it critical to have industry-specific in-cab navigation, routing & mileage data?

Precise mileage and distance using actual oil and gas roads for accurate billing

Improves driver productivity and efficiency with the most comprehensive off-road mapping

Provides turn-by-turn, voiced-guided truck-legal navigation for safety and accuracy

Detailed energy network coverage to include remote sites

Mileage precision and accurate ETA calculations from well to well or public to private lease roads

Reduce out-of route mileage costs when routing both on and off the grid

ALK®Maps with PC*MILER® Web Services for high-quality map and route visualization with industry-specific commercial routing and restrictions;

CoPilot® TruckTM for safe, accurate, load-specific navigation; and

RouteSync® for sending planned routes in the back office directly to CoPilot Truck in the vehicle for route compliance

The integration is within Cargas’ Energy software, specifically designed for fuel delivery and HVAC service companies. ALK provided Cargas a specialized solution that would not only provide industry-specific routing, navigation and map visualization capabilities, but also allowed for communication between its Route Builder and Real-Time Mobile applications.

“Our suite of solutions provides the consistency between planned and driven routes that is vital to business success.” – ALK’s Senior Vice President, Enterprise Solutions, Dan Popkin

The ALK Advantage

ALK Maps, powered by PC*MILER, is the foundation of the solution, providing map visualization for real time vehicle and asset tracking, as well as commercial and hazardous materials routing vital to their business planning.

Cargas also integrated CoPilot Truck, which provides voice-guided turn-by-turn directions based on vehicle dimensions and load. If a driver accidentally strays from the planned route, CoPilot Truck automatically re-calculates and safety guides them back to the route.

True route compliance is achieved with the final addition, RouteSync. With RouteSync, planned routes created in Route Builder are sent directly to drivers’ Real Time Mobile Application running CoPilot Truck. This piece is critical, as it produces operational consistency between dispatch and navigation , while reducing out-of-route mileage.

In an industry that thrives and depends on the latest technology innovation, our goal is to provide cohesive solutions that help your fleet achieve operational consistency, efficiency, and productivity. Learn more about the ALK Advantage and our suite of solutions or speak with one of our product experts 800-377-6453.

ALK’s product, data, development and design teams work diligently together throughout the year to execute a roadmap of new features and functionality for our annual PC*MILER release. Using valued feedback from users, as well as our support and sales teams, we’ve expanded PC*MILER’s capabilities to provide tools for safer, more compliant and cost-effective routing, mileage and mapping.

User feedback is always essential. We also take into consideration issues regarding industry trends and regulations to ensure we’re delivering a product that meets those demands.

In PC*MILER 29 we’re really excited about the new Hours of Service (HOS) Manager to help route plans stay compliant. HOS regulations have become a national industry issue and therefore, became our primary focus for PC*MILER 29. Now, users are able to factor in and save HOS rest break and stop duration times directly into planned routes. With this precision, it becomes easier to achieve operational consistency, convey realistic ETAs, and ultimately increase ROI. Additionally, we enhanced our route planning tools to allow users to search and display Points of Interest (POIs) along a scheduled route.

PC*MILER’s Powerful Enhancements *

Princeton, N.J. – June 30, 2015 – ALK Technologies, a Trimble Company and global leader in GeoLogistics® solutions and navigation software, today introduced the latest version of its PC*MILER® truck routing, mileage and mapping software. PC*MILER 29 allows for greater comprehensive planning in the back office and provides new tools to enable transportation companies to minimize overall operational costs, such as a new HOS Manager that factors Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Hours of Service (HOS) regulated breaks directly into the route.

With PC*MILER’s HOS Manager, mandatory HOS breaks are incorporated during trip planning, allowing transportation companies to clearly understand actual travel times and distance traveled. Access to this more accurate mileage information can significantly improve asset utilization as fleets can more efficiently manage their assets and ensure they’re maximizing revenue per day. When planning a route, dispatchers can easily identify if a driver will be in violation as well as identify an appropriate stop to break if needed. They can even view a list of amenities located at a stop to assist in choosing the best break location.

“Our customers can realize significant benefits from having HOS requirements built directly into their routes,” said Kara Jo O’Neil, senior product manager at ALK. “Keeping drivers HOS compliant is an ongoing national issue and we’re pleased to continue to evolve our solution to address the needs of the industry. PC*MILER 29’s improved overall functionality is equipped with the tools to further facilitate comprehensive planning that directly impacts the back office and the drivers on the road.”

PC*MILER 29 also includes the ability to search and display Points of Interest (POIs) along a route, guiding the driver to a preferred and designated stop. In addition, dispatchers can now choose the most cost-effective fuel stop when planning a route using integrated, nationwide live fuel pricing from Pilot and Flying J. Fuel prices are updated every 30 minutes, allowing dispatchers to make quick and easy changes within the route plan, providing more efficient and cost-effective routing overall.

PC*MILER 29 users will have the choice of avoiding ferries as well as roads above a specified elevation through the Ferry and Elevation Discouraged routing options. Elevation Discouraged Routing permits users to set customized limits on road elevations during route planning, enabling them to protect precious goods that could potentially damage a shipment. A revamped Via Points Manager, updated hazardous roadway restrictions as well as database enhancements and routing improvements in North America are also included within the release.

PC*MILER runs on Microsoft Windows, UNIX and Linux platforms as well as IBM AS/400 (iSeries) and mainframe computers. PC*MILER is also available as a Web-based application. It can also be seamlessly integrated with leading transportation and supply chain management systems.

Another year… another great ALK Tech Summit!

We were thrilled to have Noël Perry, Founder of Transportation Economics and Mark Rosenker, former Chairman of National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as featured speakers at the event. Their perspectives and presentations were not only interesting from a business standpoint, but their industry outlooks and stories were truly captivating.

For those who attended, we hope you enjoyed our agenda. Trying to remember what a presenter said or interested in seeing what we discussed? PDF copies of all of our General Session presentations are now available on the Presentations Page of our Summit website.

Notably our most successful portion of the Summit was our newly introduced Interactive Training Program. Focused on ALK’s suite of solutions, attendees participated in sessions led by ALK Product Managers and experts, discussing the benefits, functionality, and technical aspects of PC*MILER, CoPilot Truck, RouteSync, CoPilot FleetPortal and ALK Maps. The descriptive presentations provided information and demos of our products and allowed plenty of time for meaningful Q&A.

ALK will use the information we gathered throughout our Interactive Training Program to continue to enhance our solutions to better meet your needs. Because this new portion of the Summit was so highly regarded by our attendees, we plan on executing it again in 2016. You never know… other changes may be coming as well so make sure to read emails from ALK Tech Summit and follow us @ALKTech!

We encourage you to participate in a quick, 5 minute, post-event survey specifically for Summit attendees. We want to know what you think! We truly value our relationships with our current and prospective customers and sponsors, and want to make this event one you don’t want to miss!

Did you know PC*MILER now offers street-level routing, mileage and mapping specific to the oil and gas industry?

PC*MILER|Energy is a unique new solution that provides industry-critical routing and mileage data to make accurate planning and billing decisions when operating in the patch. Featuring the most comprehensive map* of oil and gas lease roads available in North America today, it includes both the public road network along with energy-specific access roads and infrastructure coverage in states and provinces where oil and gas wells are actively developed.

This integrated map data allows users to seamlessly plan a route, calculate mileage, and generate turn-by-turn directions from the public road network directly to locations in the patch. It also allows users to plot the lat/long of a well head and route directly to it, display a detailed satellite map view of the patch, and import custom locations of wells and facilities. Read more about PC*MILER|Energy
