I was trained as a research-oriented value investor. Long ideas require a certain amount of discipline for me to consider them as investable ideas. Short ideas require even more scrutiny as holding a short position involves unlimited downside risk. How I approach every investment idea:
- Durability: Will the company survive through a recession?
- Self-financing: Can the company sustain operations through their ability to generate cash?
- Economics: Where does the company fit into the broader economy?
- Policy: Do geopolitics effect the firm's ability to generate cash?
- Governance: Do corporate bylaws benefit the shareholders or management?
- Growth: Is the company a stalwart with phasing out technology?
- Quality earnings: Does management actively manage cash flow?
