Kayla is convinced they have to leave but Dawn is now hooked on the fantasy constructed by David James, the handsome and charismatic founder of The Source, owner of the spa who has a sinister game in mind for the women who have come for treatment - a fantasy fight for survival. The two women split up, with Kayla determined to hike out of the wilderness no matter what it takes while Dawn must come to terms with her own perception of reality and the growing fear that her daughter was right and has now disappeared.

FORGER, THE

STARRING: John Travolta, Christopher Plummer, Tye Sheridan, Abigail Spencer, Jennifer Ehle
RATING: R (for language and some violence)
GENRE: ACTION/ADVENTURE/DRAMA
RUN TIME: 92 min

Though he’s set to finish his full sentence in just 10 months, Ray Cutter makes the seemingly inexplicable decision to have his underworld connections bribe a judge so he can get out immediately — the reason he’d rather not discuss being that he’s desperate to see his son Will, who was recently diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. But this move puts him in heavy debt to known local bad guy Tommy Keegan, who promptly demands he forge a Monet (the 1875 “Woman with Parasol”) so it can be swapped with the real one, hanging at Boston’s Museum of Modern Art, which will then be sold to an international drug-cartel chief/art aficionado.

As father tries to bond with the motherless teenage son he’s disappointed many times before, two police detectives trail him, hoping he’ll lead them to finally nab Keegan — and perhaps a global drug kingpin in the bargain. Meanwhile, Will continues a rather hopeless course of chemotherapy, and Ray, inspired by the Make-a-Wish foundation, plays wish-granting “genie.” The 15-year-old’s bucket list includes meeting his long-abandoned addict mother, having sex before he dies, and — to Ray’s great reluctance — joining Dad in some of his intriguing illegal activities. Thus Ray enlists the help of his father & Son and together they plan the heist of their lives!

IF THERE BE THORNS

STARRING: Heather Graham, Jason Lewis, Veena Sood, Emily Tennant, Mason Cook, Rachael Carpani, Robert Moloney
RATING: NR
GENRE: DRAMA/ROMANCE
RUN TIME: 94 min

The third installment in the FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC series follows the tragically dysfunctional Dollanger family as they try to escape their past... only to find out there are some things that you can never get away from.

The story is narrated by two half-brothers, Jory and Bart Sheffield. Jory is a handsome, talented fourteen-year-old boy who wants to follow his mother Cathy in her career in the ballet, while nine-year-old Bart, who is unattractive and clumsy, feels he is outshone by Jory. By now, siblings Cathy and Chris live together as husband and wife. To hide their history, they tell the boys and other people they know that Chris was Paul's younger brother. Cathy and Chris have a passionate and very loving relationship, described by Jory who has accidentally witnessed encounters between them. The more they fight, the more they make up with affection. Cathy is a loving mother to her sons, but shows some favoritism towards Jory. Unable to have more children, Cathy secretly adopts Cindy, the two-year-old daughter of one her former dance students, who was killed in an accident, because she longs to have a girl, as well as child that is hers and Christopher's. Initially against it, Chris comes to accept the child, and Jory does as well, but Bart is very upset and resentful of Cindy. Lonely from all the attention Jory and Cindy are receiving, Bart befriends an elderly neighbor that moved in next door, who invites him over for cookies and ice cream and encourages him to call her "Grandmother." Jory eventually goes next door as well to see who Bart keeps visiting, and the old lady tried to tell him that she is actually his grandmother. Jory initially doesn't believe her, and avoids her at all costs. The old woman and Bart, on the other hand, soon develop an affectionate friendship, and the woman does her best to give Bart whatever he wants, provided that Bart promises to keep her gifts—-and their relationship-—a secret from his mother.

Her butler, John Amos, also seems to befriend Bart, but soon John Amos begins to fill Bart's mind with stories about the sinful nature of women. John Amos reveals that the old woman is truly Bart's grandmother, Corrine Foxworth. He also gives Bart a journal belonging to Bart's biological great-grandfather, Malcolm Foxworth, claiming that this journal will help Bart become as powerful and successful as that man. Bart is enveloped by the journal and begins to pretend that he is his great-grandfather, who hated women and was obsessed with their degradation. Bart becomes destructive and violent towards his parents and siblings; he kicks Jory in the stomach and cuts off Cindy's hair, and even tries to drown Cindy in her baby pool once. Bart's family notices the change in the boy, but only Jory suspects that the changes are due to the mysterious woman next door. At the same time, Jory becomes suspicious of his parents' relationship. Although amazed by their love, which he describes as intense and heartfelt, he notices that they resemble each other and wonders why his mother would marry Paul, who was much older, before Chris.

After Bart becomes ill and nearly dies, Jory finally tells Chris about his suspicions about the lady next door. They go to confront her, but Chris discovers that the woman is his mother, who pleads with him to love and forgive her. Chris is indifferent to her pleas and orders her to stay away from him, Cathy, and the children, especially Bart. However, he decides not to tell Cathy about any of this. At the same time, Cathy is injured in a ballet accident and is told that she will never dance again. From her wheelchair, she begins to write out the story of her life. Bart filches his mother's manuscript pages and is enraged to learn the truth about his parents: Cathy and Chris are brother and sister, and his "grandmother" locked them in an attic for years, feeding them poison to gain an inheritance. The news causes Bart to cling to the only person who has not yet lied to him: John Amos. Bart proudly calls his parents sinners and "devil's spawns". Jory finds out the truth when his paternal grandmother visits and confronts Cathy about her relationship with "her brother Christopher". Jory is shocked and disgusted, but soon forgives them after he learns of their tragic past.

Cathy finally learns about the woman next door when Bart accidentally says that the woman gives him anything he wants, and she goes to confront the woman. The old woman tries to hide her identity, but Cathy recognizes her voice. Corrine admits that she is indeed Cathy's mother. She expresses remorse for her crimes against Cathy, Chris and the twins, and begs Cathy to forgive and love her again. Cathy is enraged and attacks her. Before she can storm out, John Amos knocks Cathy and Corrine unconscious. Working on John Amos' orders, Bart, who now believes he is a vessel for his great-grandfather's vengeful spirit, helps to lock Cathy and her mother into the cellar, where John Amos plans to starve them to death. In the course of this, Bart realizes how much he loves his mother and grandmother, despite their sins, and he tells Chris where the women are. But before they can be reached, the house next door catches fire. Bart goes in and unlocks the cellar door. Corrine orders Bart outside, and Corrine goes back into the cellar and saves Cathy, but Corrine's clothes catch fire as soon as she gets outside. Chris runs to her and helps put out the flames, but her heart gives out and she dies. John Amos dies in the house as well.

The epilogue, resumed with Cathy as narrator, describes Cathy's emotional forgiveness of her mother at the woman's funeral. Cathy and Chris, for the sake of their three children, realize that they must never allow their secret relationship to be revealed. Bart seems to have recovered from the worst of his madness, but still dwells on the power wielded by his great-grandfather, whose millions he now stands to inherit.

PLAYING IT COOL

STARRING: Chris Evans, Michelle Monaghan
RATING: R (for language and sexual content)
GENRE: COMEDY
RUN TIME: 95 min

A disillusioned screenwriter with a big imagination that consists mostly of hot women yielding to his every desire is working on a script for a romantic comedy movie and having a hard time because he is a little jaded when it comes to love since his mother abandoned him when he was a boy. So he spends his time ruining every relationship he has. But he really needs to make the script, so he turns to his friends for their experiences. But it's not enough. He's indifferent to true love until he meets HER, a breathtaking young woman who shakes all his previous beliefs and captures his heart. Problem is that she's already engaged. But she allows him to be her friend. They try to remain friends, but end up sleeping together. When the truth comes out, all hell breaks loose and he ends up as the star in his own tragedy.

With the help of his friends, he is able to discover what love is and comes to the conclusion that he is in love and decides to stop the girl’s wedding. When he gets there, he finds out they didn’t get married after all. The girl tries to come up with excuses as to why they don’t belong together, but he says he knows there’s a chance their relationship won’t work, but he’s willing to risk it for her. This wins her over and they kiss. Everyone has their own ideas, philosophies and rules about love but, none of that matters, because love is not a "thinking thing", it's a "feeling thing".

POUND OF FLESH

STARRING: Jean-Claude Van Damme, John Ralston, Charlotte Peters, Leonard Gonzales, Darren Shahlavi
RATING: NR
GENRE: ACTION/ADVENTURE
RUN TIME: 104 min

In China to donate his kidney to his dying niece, former black-ops agent Deacon awakes the day before the operation to find he is the latest victim of organ theft. They hatch a plan to hand deliver a demo tape to their idols The Stone Roses at the band's impending gig at Spike Island in Cheshire. But when their tickets fail to materialize, the lads are forced to take extreme measures to sneak their way in. Along the way, friendships are tested and their futures are shaped -- together or apart.

SURVIVOR

STARRING: Milla Jovovich, Pierce Brosnan, Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, James D'Arcy
RATING: PG-13 (for violence, some action and brief strong language violence, some action and brief strong language)
GENRE: ACTION/ADVENTURE
RUN TIME: 96 min

A woman who works for the U.S. State Department gets assigned to a post at the embassy in London, where she is supposed to work to ensure that terrorists are not able to go into the United States. This job makes her a target of the very terrorists she hunts, and she soon finds herself being besieged with false accusations and framed for horrific crimes she did not commit. Racing to elude assassins she goes on the run, while trying to clear her name but she's already learned of a large scale terrorist plot to unleash a massive attack on New York on New Year's Eve. Will she be able to stop it?

TOM & JERRY: SPY QUEST

STARRING: Tom and Jerry
RATING: NR
GENRE: ANIMATION/FAMILY
RUN TIME: 60 min

Tom and Jerry become involved in the world of espionage, when Tom inadvertently gets his paws on a top secret code, which all the spies are after.

Eventually, she wins the jackpot of $86 million. When she appears on the news celebrating her win, she is quickly cut off when the speech she had prepared gets suddenly vulgar, much to her dismay. She then decides to go off of her medication, against the wishes of her therapist Daryl Moffat, and move into a casino hotel.

She appears on TV again during a vitamin supplement infomercial run by Gabe Ruskin, where she forcibly becomes a volunteer and recites her speech once again (though is still cut off by the program director Dawn Hurley). Her quirky personality is highly received by Gabe's brother and studio-head Rich, and Alice uses the opportunity to request the creation of a show, which Rich sees as an opportunity to finally make a profit for his fledgling studio. At the subsequent meeting, Alice requests 100 two-hour long episodes of her show, which she has titled Welcome to Me, in which she discusses whatever happens to be on her mind at the time. Despite the price to produce the show, she promptly pays for it in full, much to the shock and elation of Rich. Though Gabe is reluctant to see to the show's production, mostly because of the vague and random nature of her show, Alice takes Gabe out on a date, where they promptly have sex and begin a relationship. The first episode is awkward, involving segments such as her making a meatloaf cake (which she also eats live) as well as sketch where she publicly shames a woman who wronged her in high school. Alice is disappointed with the episode's quality, who wants it to appear more like Oprah. After spending more money, she revamps the set to include a rotating stage, as well as an exact replica of her house.

As the show rises in popularity, so does the quality and production value of the show. However, her friends and family, including her mother and her best friend Gina Selway, become more alienated as a result, especially when Alice makes a sketch where she depicts Gina as fat because of her preferences in one-pieces over two-piece bikinis. Things escalate when Rainer Ybarra, a reporter for his college's newspaper, interviews her rising stardom. After she gives him a blowjob in her limousine, this tryst is inadvertently revealed on her show by a secretly recorded phone call with Moffat, which greatly angers him and Gabe. After an incident in which Alice burns her chest and arms spilling chili on herself (attacking Gabe and the studio crew in the process), she suddenly formulates a sketch to neuter dogs live on her show. At this point, Gabe finally quits, realizing that she has gone too far. Rich continues to support Alice's decision until he and the studio are sued in numerous slander cases by people that Alice shamed on her show, health code violations related to the neutered dogs, and other damages (including a lawsuit from Gabe). Rich tells Alice to cancel the neutering segment immediately, and after seeing signs of disinterest in her audience, she cancels her recording early and goes on an indefinite hiatus. After settling all of the lawsuits, Alice is left with $7 million of her winnings.

With her friends, family, and colleagues having forsaken her, she suffers a nervous breakdown in the middle of the casino. In the hospital, Gina visits her and berates her for her selfish attitude towards the people she has hurt and her sheer lack of empathy towards them. After being released, she apologizes to Dr. Moffat personally, and then she contacts Rich over doing a final episode of Welcome to Me. She invites her family and Gina to the recording, but Gina does not show up. Throughout the show, Alice holds a lavish telethon in an attempt to find suitable owners for the dogs she's neutered, as well as repenting for the wrongs she did throughout her own life, including apologizing to Gabe for cheating on him and breaking off her relationship with Rainer. Gina finally arrives, and in the show's last moments, Alice gives a heartfelt apology to her and praises her for her patience and being her friend, then presenting her a check for the remaining $7 million of her lottery winnings.

Taking her back home, her life now back to normal, Gabe gives Alice a camcorder for her own purposes. Going to bed, she turns off her television that she's left on for over eleven years for the first time.

WILD TALES

STARRING: Dario Grandinetti, Maria Marull, Monica Villa, Rita Cortese, Julieta Zylberberg, Ceasar Bordon
RATING: R (for violence, language and brief sexuality)
GENRE: ACTION/ADVENTURE/COMEDY
RUN TIME: 122 min

(SPANISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES)
Six short stories involving distressed people that all tell disturbing and funny stories. He goes to the towed-car lot and argues, insisting there were no yellow lines, but to no avail. He pays the towing fee and misses his daughter's party. The next day, when he is again refused a refund, he attacks the glass partition and is arrested. The story makes the news and Fischer's company fires him. His wife seeks a divorce and sole custody of their daughter. Fischer applies unsuccessfully for a job and discovers his car has been towed again. He retrieves the car and packs it with explosives. After it is towed again, he detonates the explosives, destroying the towing office with no casualties. Fischer is imprisoned and becomes a local hero, with calls on social media for his release. During a rescue mission to save the kidnapped Professor Arnold, one of his fellow Kingsmen is killed, and the agency must recruit a new member to replace him. Harry takes under his wing Eggsy Unwin, the young twenty-something son of another deceased Kingsmen who saved Harry's life on a mission 17 years earlier. Harry's boss, Arthur, doubts his choice and instead has more faith in a skilled female recruit named Roxy or Eggsy's arrogant rival, Charlie.

As the young candidates vie to become Kingsmen, a billionaire megalomaniac named Valentine plots to distribute free cell phones and offer free Internet worldwide, then activate a signal within the technology that will turn all of humanity into packs of mindlessly violent savages bent on killing each other. His goal is to wipe out most of humanity and restart the planet with a chosen few -- mostly the wealthy, elite, and famous. He employs a female assassin named Gazelle, who has had both legs amputated and replaced with metal prosthetic limbs that she wields as extremely sharp swords capable of fatally slicing and dicing her prey.

As the countdown to Doomsday looms, Eggsy's cloak-and-dagger skills continue to evolve to the point where he becomes key to saving the world. He finds a major supporter in the Kingsmen's resident technology expert, Merlin, and eventually mounts an all-out assault on Valentine's remote stronghold.

MCFARLAND, USA

STARRING: KEVIN COSTNER, CARLOS PRATTS, MARIA BELLO, MORGAN SAYLOR, JOHNNY ORTIZ
RATING: PG (for thematic material, some violence and language)
GENRE: DRAMA/ROMANCE
RUN TIME: 109 min

***RELEASED 6/2/15, BUT I FORGOT TO INCLUDE IN LAST WEEK’S POSTING***
In 1987, in Boise, Idaho, football coach Jim White is chastising his players for an underwhelming half. Jim gets into a verbal altercation with one of the players, resulting in Jim throwing a football shoe with cleats at him. Following this incident, Jim is forced to move with his wife, Cheryl, and two daughters, Julie and Jamie. They settle down in McFarland, California, a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. On their first night there, the family goes to a small restaurant and leaves to find a large gathering of Latinos in cars surrounding the place. One man makes suggestive motions toward Julie, prompting the family to leave faster.

White starts his new job as the life science/PE teacher and assistant football coach at school. During Jim's PE class, three boys, the Diaz brothers Danny, Damacio, and David, are forced by their mother to leave. During the school's football game, one of the players, Johnny Sameniego, gets injured on the field. The head coach wants him to get back out there, but White orders Johnny to sit out, which angers the head coach.

The coach complains to Principal Camillo about Jim's actions during the game and demands that he step down. During the next day's PE class, Jim sits on the bleachers and watches the boys run around the track with Jamie joining him. She comments that the boys, particularly Victor and Johnny (who got cut from the football team) move very fast. Jim goes to Camillo to convince him to let him start a cross country team to compete in the upcoming state championships. Jim also enlists Johnny's help to recruit six more runners for the team, starting with Victor. Johnny asks the Diaz brothers, as well as two other students – Jose Cardenas and Thomas Valles. Thomas has gotten in trouble at school for being involved in altercations with other boys that mocked his younger sister for getting pregnant, so Jim negotiates for him to join the team to avoid suspension. Although the boys are initially reluctant, they agree to join the team and run with Jim across the town, with Danny lagging behind as he is the heaviest of the Diez brothers on the team.

After some training, the team goes to their first meet in Palo Alto as boys from the other schools taunt the McFarland team. The race commences, and the McFarland team lands in the final spot. Knowing the boys are disappointed, Jim takes full responsibility for the loss to not let them get discouraged.

Having been late for his daughter's birthday, Jim goes for a drive and sees Thomas sitting on a bridge over the road. He approaches him and notices a bruise on his eye, which Thomas says was his own fault because he tried to stop his father from hurting his hands so that he could keep working. Jim talks him down and tells him that he has good things ahead of him, encouraging him to continue doing something worthwhile.

The Diaz brothers are pulled out of the team by their father, who wants them to keep working the fields. Jim goes to the brothers' home, and the next morning goes out to work on the fields with them. The team goes up for another race to qualify for the championships. The team competes, and manage to just break into the top four teams, enough to qualify. Meanwhile, a coach from Palo Alto gives Jim a card, saying he is interested in an open full-time position.

The people in town learn that Julie just turned 15 and decide to help organize a quinceañera for her. They bring Cheryl, Julie, and Jamie to the salon while everyone sets up at home. Thomas gives her a bracelet that his grandmother made. Later, Javi and Lupe offer to take Julie out for her own "parade", with Thomas accompanying them. Not long after, their car is confronted by a group of punks that bother Javi. The authorities contact Jim, forcing him and Cheryl to drive to the scene and find Julie on the ground, with scrapes on her legs and shaking tearfully. Jim is angry over this, despite being assured that Julie was protected.

Jim meets with the Palo Alto district for the coaching position. The boys and his family learn about this, and are upset with him. He tells Cheryl that he could bring them the better life that he promised them. Cheryl argues that they have settled in just fine here and it would be wrong for Jim to abandon the team and the friends they have made. The day arrives for the state championships. The whole community goes out to support the team. The race commences, shortly after Jim notices that Jose is moving too fast and worries that he will overexert himself. Thomas runs faster to pick up the slack as Jose starts to slow down. Thomas ends up crossing the finish line first, while the others come in closely. Jim worries when he does not see Jose, but to both his and Thomas's surprise, it is Danny that runs faster and picks up the slack.
The judges tally their scores together and McFarland comes in first, and the team and town celebrates while Jim turns down the job offer from Palo Alto to remain in McFarland.

PROJECT ALMANAC

STARRING: SAM LERNER, JONNY WESTON, GARY WEEKS, SOFIA BLACK-D'ELLA, ALLEN EVANGELISTA, VIRGINIA GARDNER
RATING: PG-13 (for some language and sexual content)
GENRE: FANTASY/SCI-FI
RUN TIME: 120 min

A fun coming-of-age tale in the vein of BACK TO THE FUTURE. David, an awkward 16-year old, and his friends learn how to go back in time using a wormhole and a machine they've built using a video game consol. David's future may just lie in his own past.

David Raskin is a high school senior and science whiz who's just been accepted to MIT, much to the joy of his mom and younger, high school age sister, Chris. David's buddies and fellow geeks Adam and Quinn are happy for him as well, but the problem is that MIT's offer only comes with $5,000 in financial aid. Needing a way to make a money-generating impression, David goes through his late father's scientific papers in the attic. While doing so, Chris discovers an old video camera that shows footage of David's seventh birthday, the last time they saw their dad alive.

But the shocking thing is that in a couple of frames of the video, David believes he spots a mirror reflection of his current self at that birthday party a decade ago. They and Adam and Quinn eventually come to believe that their father, working with DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), was developing a time machine, and decided to try and build it via his plans that they discover in his old basement lab, along with a temporal displacement engine that just needs enough power to work.

That results in them eventually using the batteries in the hybrid car driven by Jessie, the girl at school with whom David is quite smitten. Accordingly, she ends up seeing their experiment work on a small scale. And noting that they have video proof that they already successfully traveled back in time, she convinces them to try it on themselves. With the limited power ability to only go back three weeks in time, they decide to win the lottery, get revenge on a classmate who's been bullying Chris, and get a better chemistry class grade for Quinn.

But a trip back to Lollapalooza changes everything in that David realizes he blew his chance to kiss Jessie. Breaking their rules about always traveling as a group, David goes back to that event, kisses her, and returns to the present to discover that she's his girlfriend. But he also learns that these temporal jumps have resulted in dire ripple effects due to the various changes in the past. From that point on, he goes back and tries to fix them, unaware that doing so is only going to make things worse.

SERENA

STARRING: BRADLEY COOPER, JENNIFER LAWRENCE
RATING: R (for (for some violence and sexuality)
GENRE: DRAMA/ROMANCE
RUN TIME: 109 min

The year is 1929, and love-struck newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton travel from Boston to the North Carolina mountains where they plan to create a timber empire. When Serena responds that George will not be assisting them, Abe attacks George with a bowie knife. Ultimately George wins the battle and kills Abe. George also meets his business partners Wilkie and Buchanan at the train station and introduces them to his new wife, Serena.

Serena will soon show herself to be the equal of any man, overseeing crews, hunting rattlesnakes, even saving her husband's life in the wilderness. With power and influence now in their hands, the Pembertons refuse to let anyone stand in the way of their inflated love and ambitions. The money he borrowed to make it all happen is long overdue. With the money all gone and the record far from finished, he becomes desperate for a solution. So when "The Bruce" - unscrupulous business man and owner of a string of male strip clubs - gives him only six months to pay back sixty-thousand dollars or say good-bye to his dream, Samuel knows what he's got to do. To make it all work, he going to take it all off. With his looks and his talents, raising enough money to pay off the loan and complete the record ought to be a cinch, but there's still a hitch. For his plan to work he'll have to keep it a secret for a number of reasons. One, because his "keeper" of a girlfriend would drop him if she ever found out. And two, because he's the son of one of the most prominent and respected preachers in the community. And while keeping his job hidden proves easy at first, it isn't long before word gets out. And now with lines to get into the club beginning to extend around the block, women are starting to talk. On top of these worries, "The Bruce" who will stop at nothing to keep his best money maker from getting away, has a plan of his own. When they've finally fought off a wave, two of their squad members are missing, their communications return only static, and the doors are locked. They're trapped. They break up into three teams to track down the lost members. Strange sounds and religious iconography suggest something beyond insanity has taken over the inmates. Sure enough, a simple rescue mission quickly morphs into relentless life or death battles with possessed. Several groups of unlikely people find themselves trapped together in an emergency rescue center, but no rescue is coming! So as the country goes to hell overnight, and the reality sinks in, how and what will these people do to survive.

JUPITER ASCENDING

STARRING: Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton
RATING: PG-13 (for some violence, sequences of sci-fi action, some suggestive content and partial nudity)
GENRE: SCI-FI
RUN TIME: 127 min

Jupiter Jones was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. She is a Russian immigrant who was brought to America as an infant. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job working as a maid with her mother and other family members and an endless run of bad breaks.

Only when Caine Wise, a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along - her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos. She hates her life, but soon has a change of heart when extraterrestrial aliens attempt to kill her. They nearly succeed, but Jupiter is saved by half-wolf, half-man Caine Wise, a so-called skyjacker who's been sent by a universal royal, Titus, to find and retrieve her.

It seems that she's the genetically reincarnated matriarch of a royal family that owns most of the universe, and Titus and his siblings, Balem and Kalique are quite interested in Jupiter, what with their mother having recently perished. In short, they don't want her messing with their plans that involve a myriad of planets they separately own, including Earth. When Caine figures that out, he seeks out the help of his former military commander, Stinger, with whom he had a falling out in the past.

As Jupiter tries to soak all of this in, Caine does what he can to protect her from the others and help her take her rightful place on the royal thrown, overseeing the universe and its inhabitants.

KILLING JESUS

STARRING: Kelsey Grammer, Haaz Sleiman, Stephen Moyer, Rufus Sewell, Emmanuelle Chriqui
RATING: NR
GENRE: DRAMA
RUN TIME: 132 min

Filmed entirely in Morocco, part political thriller, part historical drama, Killing Jesus breathes new life into a lineage of cinematic portrayals centering on the humble carpenter from Nazareth. We watch as Jesus flips the balance of power with His message of God's grace and love when law and order rule.

Undoubtedly one of National Geographic's most ambitious projects.
National Geographic matches its mission to preserve its findings about the Man from Galilee. Though some criticize it for focusing on Jesus' humanity and glossing over His divinity, Killing Jesus does what National Geographic and its authors set out to do--tell an engaging account of one of the most influential figures in history. Killing Jesus centers on the Son of God, but gives those in power who sought to quash his growing influence over the Jewish people a chance to tell their side of the story.

Killing Jesus starts at the beginning of the Rabbi's life with King Herod the Great ruthlessly ruling over his people. Paranoid that his throne will be usurped, Herod orders the murder of all of the male babies in Bethlehem when three magi from the East tell him of the Messiah's birth.

The film doesn't shy away from the violence or immorality of that time. A few minutes in, we see King Herod's guards brutally thrust their swords through the male children. Grieved mothers weep over their bodies, as they lie dead in the street.

In the portrayal of the death of John the Baptist, viewers witness his vicious beheading at the order of Antipas, who rules over Galilee. In one prominent scene, Salome seductively dances for her stepfather, Antipas, at his request. Salome's sheer robe entices Antipas' lust, granting her and Herodia's wish to have John the Baptist killed. Antipas graphically acts out his immoral thoughts toward his stepdaughter by licking and kissing her bare leg.

We also see the bloody scourging and merciless crucifixion of Jesus by the Romans, at the insistence of the Sanhedrin and by the order of Pontius Pilate. Likewise, the hanging of Judas from a tree outside Jerusalem is most effecting.

For those who wonder about the amount of Bible-based events in Killing Jesus, know that the TV movie does show Jesus as He is seen by the faithful few who closely followed Him. Some of Jesus' most famous teaching moments, including the Sermon on the Mount, are intact. Jesus, quotes essential New Testament scripture, including remarks about needing to be "born again" and the profound verse found in John 11:25 ("I am the resurrection and the life. And those who believe in me, even though he die, will live.")

At first, Jesus seems unaware of His divine connection to God. And He appears surprised by the effect of His prayer while fishing in the barren Sea of Galilee with a frustrated fisherman named Simon, later called Peter. The Holy Spirit is not mentioned; however, Jesus is seen baptized in the Jordan River. Jesus' miracles are, for the most part, only referenced. Also, the resurrection, though implied, is not visually confirmed with the return of Jesus in the flesh.
Presenting Jesus' life and death from a largely historical perspective could open this religious history to wider audiences. And though Killing Jesus covers a lot of ground, it's done succinctly and does not overload the viewer. From its authentic-looking set design to its detailed costumes, Killing Jesus transports you back to the arrival of Jesus, to witness how He shook established law and tradition.

Killing Jesus serves as a conversation starter, encouraging viewers to accept the historical evidence of Jesus. Audiences will see that He really lived, really died, and that it's entirely possible He lived again (as believers know He did).

MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT

STARRING: Sofia Boutella, Joe Dempsie, Sam Keeley
RATING: R (for graphic war violence, pervasive language, some strong sexual content/nudity and drug use)
GENRE: FANTASY/SCI-FI
RUN TIME: 122 min

Ten years on from the events of Monsters, and the 'Infected Zones' have now spread worldwide. In the Middle East a new insurgency has begun. At the same time there has also been a proliferation of Monsters in that region. The Army decides to draft in more numbers to help deal with this insurgency. Four fresh recruits from Detroit are sent on a special mission: to rescue five soldiers who have been lost deep in the Infected Zone. The #1 focus of the mission is human, but they are instructed to take down any creatures that get in the way along the route. A life threatening mission into monster territory.

POLTERGEIST OF BORLEY FOREST, THE

STARRING: Marina Petrano, Christopher Ingle
RATING: NR
GENRE: HORROR
RUN TIME: 102 min

After visiting a supposedly haunted forest, a teen girl comes to believe that a violent poltergeist has followed her home and is stalking her and so with her brother and friends, sets out on a mission to unravel its mystery and stop it before it harms someone.

The events surround a young woman, Paige, who is supposed to be sleeping over at a friend’s house but instead, she and her friends are in the woods partying with older college kids. Paige is uncomfortable being there and quickly becomes restless. She decides to leave but has to track down one of her friends to drive her home. While walking through the forest, she comes across a tree with a rope hanging from one of its branches and when she touches it, she is forced to the ground and immediately begins to feel apprehensive and afraid.

Her friends find her and after they drop her home, she brushes off the anxiety she sensed in the woods but soon thereafter, she begins to experience strange anomalies and her life becomes a living nightmare. At night, she is woken for no apparent reason but then she begins to see a shadowy figure in her room and over time, the figure becomes more distinct until she is able to make out the facial features of a young man. After it attacks her and her friends one night, they decide to do some research at the local library about the origins of Borley Forest. They discover that it was once an ancient burial ground and that in the 1960s, several people from the neighborhood disappeared there and that a young man, matching the description of the spirit Paige saw, was hanged as the main suspect.

With this in mind and the help of a medium, Paige and her friends must make their way back to Borley Forest one last time, in hopes of stopping the supernatural being before he takes any more lives. The forest itself serves as a good backdrop for an eerie setting.

PRIVATE NUMBER

STARRING: Judd Nelson, Tom Sizemore, Hal Ozsan, Nicholle Tom, Joel Michaely, Ray Stoney, Ali Costello
RATING: R (for violence, grisly images, and language including a sexual reference)
GENRE: HORROR/THRILLER
RUN TIME: 95 min

A series of sinister phone calls haunt an ex-alcoholic writer as he struggles to finish a novel. In his obsessive search for answers, he loses his grip on reality, and spirals downward into a maelstrom of violence and terror.

SPONGEBOB: SPONGE OUT OF WATER

STARRING: Antonio Banderas, Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Rodger Bumpass, Paul Tibbitt
RATING: PG (for mild action and rude humor)
GENRE: ANIMATED/ADVENTURE
RUN TIME: 162 min

During one particularly daring heist, Plankton is able to thwart Mr. Krabs' top employees, the good-hearted short-order cook SpongeBob SquarePants, and the surly Squidward Tentacles and finally swipe the formula. What's really happened is that Burger-Beard has used the power of the book to nab the formula so he can open the most successful food truck in a nearby resort town above water. It's up to SpongeBob, Plankton, Squidward, Mr. Krabs and their friends, the dim-witted Patrick Star and the adventurous squirrel, Sandy Cheeks, to reacquire the formula and return Bikini Bottom to order.

SPRING (2014)

STARRING: Lou Taylor Pucci, Nadia Hilker
RATING: NR
GENRE: HORROR
RUN TIME: 109 min

Evan is a young American fleeing to Europe to escape his past.
***11 NEW RELEASES, TUESDAY, May 19, 2015***
The Peanut Gallery: 221 FIR STREET #1, LA GRANDE
HOURS: T-TH 5PM-8PM, F 4PM-10PM, SAT 10AM-10PM

AMERICAN SNIPER

STARRING: Bradley Cooper, Luke Grimes, Sienna Miller, Kyle Gallner, Ben Reed
RATING: R (for strong and disturbing war violence, and language throughout including some sexual references)
GENRE: ACTION/DRAMA
RUN TIME: 134 min

From director Clint Eastwood comes the biopic of Chris Kyle, the most-celebrated sniper in American military history. But there was much more to this true American hero than his skill with a rifle. He is the deadliest American sniper ever, called "The Devil" by the enemies he hunted & "The Legend" by his Navy SEAL brothers. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 kills to U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle from 1999 to 2009. He was feared so much the Iraqi insurgents placed a bounty on his head, as he protected his fellow soldiers with deadly accuracy!

As the story opens, it is 1998, we meet carefree brothers Chris and Jeff as they work the Texas rodeo circuit. Chris Kyle is an aspiring rodeo rider who, like his younger brother, Jeff, had a certain life philosophy instilled into him by his father. And that was that the world is filled with three kinds of people, sheep, wolves and sheepdogs whose jobs are to protect the innocent from those who are evil. They're cowboys through and through, and despite being notably older than the usual enlistee in the aftermath of 9/11, when terrorists blow up several American embassies, Kyle decides to enlist in the military and serve his country by becoming a Navy SEAL.

Later, at the firing range, he draws on his hunting lessons with his stern father to become an expert marksman. It's then that he meets Taya, a pretty brunette, in a booze-fueled barroom chat, sweeps her off her feet, and ends up deployed to Iraq on their wedding day for his first tour of duty with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms.

Serving alongside the likes of fellow SEAL Marc Lee, Chris is a sniper who works to protect those on the ground in Iraq. He soon becomes quite proficient at killing those who want to kill American soldiers, eventually becoming something of a legend among his fellow men. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname "Legend." However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. But with each tour of duty, he grows more detached from his wife and children.

On the other side, former Syrian Olympic sharpshooter Mustafa is racking up the kills as well, and Chris makes it his mission to eventually kill that man when he gets the chance. But as he continues his sniper spree through multiple tours in Iraq, Chris doesn't initially realize what such combat is doing to his psyche, and the effects that it is having on his marriage to Taya, especially now that they're parents of two young kids. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, becoming emblematic of the SEAL creed to "leave no man behind." But upon returning home, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind.

There, his reputation as a sniper who never misses makes him a legend among his fellow troops, and earns him the moniker "The Devil of Ramadi" from his enemies. With a substantial bounty on his head, Kyle makes it his personal mission to take out a sadistic Iraqi soldier known as "The Butcher," as well as an elusive enemy marksman with a skill to rival his own. The closer he gets to achieving his goals during repeat tours of duty, however, the more fellow soldiers he sees die, and the further he drifts from Taya and their two children back home. It all leads up to a tense rooftop gunfight in a raging sandstorm -- one that convinces the sniper once and for all to make his family his top priority. Unfortunately, all is not well as Kyle struggles to make the transition back to civilian life, but he discovers that helping his fellow veterans is an effective way to do good and make peace with his wartime experiences.

CURSE OF THE WITCHING TREE

STARRING: Sarah Rose Denton, Lucy Clarvis, Lawrence Weller
RATING: NR
GENRE: HORROR
RUN TIME: 90 min

An innocent woman, accused of murdering her son and hanged as a witch, curses a tree and the children who play around it. A crook named Gergerman has been running their businesses out and harassing the men and their families. The men hand over a pair of Gergerman's shoes to the cobbler, Pinchas Simkin. One woman approaches him and notes that she saw him somewhere leaving with a man. Max then finds out where Emiliano lives and sees Taryn taking a shower. She invites him to join her. He eagerly starts to take off his clothes until he realizes that once he takes off even one shoe, he will no longer be Emiliano, so he leaves. Max decides to make his mother happy by using the shoes that belonged to his father Abraham. Max goes into Ludlow's room to find his watches, and ends up uncovering a cache of guns and other weapons. The real Ludlow returns and starts to choke out Max (still wearing Ludlow's shoes) until Max zaps him with a taser. Max joins two thugs that think he is Ludlow to an area where they are holding a man captive for stealing from them. They are about to kill him on Ludlow's orders until Ludlow-Max tells them to let the guy go. Furthermore, Max is taken to the home of a slum lord named Elaine Greenawalt. Ludlow attacks him again until Max removes a shoe, startling Ludlow when he sees Max. He tries to attack Max again until Max sticks the other stiletto in Ludlow's neck, killing him. Max turns himself into the police, but when they return to the apartment, Ludlow's body is gone, and the blood is cleaned up. The police leave Max alone and confused. Jimmy confronts Max about his recent odd behavior. He tells Max that his father did the same thing before he disappeared, and that he kept this a secret from Max to protect him.

Max joins with Carmen to the apartment of Mr. Solomon, the man that Greenawalt is trying to buy out. But when her fellow college student roommate, Kate, is too sick to interview Seattle-based telecom mogul Christian Grey for the school newspaper, Ana takes her place. She finds the young billionaire attractive, while Grey quickly sets his sights on her, wondering if her photographer friend, José, is her boyfriend. He isn't, and much to Christian's surprise, Ana reveals -- once they become physically involved -- that she's still a virgin.

He quickly takes care of that -- after his brother Elliot has bedded Kate -- and then wonders if she might be interested in a particular behavior he finds quite appealing. While his mother, Grace, is happy to see a woman in his life, and her four-time married mother, Carla, tries to impart words of wisdom to her about men, Ana must decide whether to sign a highly detailed contract with Christian about starting such a BDSM relationship where she'd be the submissive party to his dominant one.

As their sexual relationship continues to evolve, Ana tries to decide whether to proceed or not, all while being frustrated by his reluctance and/or inability to open up to her emotionally in the traditional sense of a romantic relationship.

***11 NEW RELEASES, TUESDAY, May 5, 2015***
The Peanut Gallery: 221 FIR STREET #1, LA GRANDE
HOURS: T-TH 5PM-8PM, F 4PM-10PM, SAT 10AM-10PM

AGAINST THE SUN
STARRING: Tom Felton, Garret Dillahunt, Jake Abel
RATING: PG (for thematic material involving peril and hardships, and for language)
GENRE: ADVENTURE/DRAMA
RUN TIME: 99 min

In one of the most harrowing fact-based true stories of World War II, three US Navy airmen crash land their torpedo bomber in the South Pacific and find themselves on a tiny life raft, surrounded by open ocean. "Against the Sun" tells the true story of an air crew who had to take to the life raft after their plane went down in the Pacific. The three man-crew was presumed missing at sea, after a cursory "box search" was done for them. It was January, 1942. "Against the Sun" is a respectfully told survivalist story of pilot Harold Dixon, bombardier Tony Pastula, and radioman Gene Aldrich in a life raft with no food, no flares, no water, no supplies, all of it had gone down with the plane. "Against the Sun" takes place almost entirely in the life raft, with a short prologue showing the crew's final moments in the plane when they realize they have somehow flown off-course and don't have enough fuel to get back to the aircraft carrier. Against incredible odds, these three virtual strangers must survive storms, sharks, starvation - and each other - as they try to sail more than a thousand miles to safety.

BLACK OR WHITE
STARRING: Kevin Costner, Octavia L. Spencer, Jillian Estell, Bill Burr, Jennifer Ehle
RATING: PG-13 (for brief strong language, thematic material involving drug use and drinking, and for a fight)
GENRE: DRAMA/ROMANCE
RUN TIME: 121 min

Black or White is the story of a grandfather who is suddenly left to care for his beloved biracial granddaughter when his wife dies in a car crash. When her paternal grandmother feels that she is better equipped to take care of the child, and sues for custody with the help of her brother, the little girl is torn between two families who love her deeply. Elliot's world is turned upside-down when the child's black grandmother, Rowena, demands that Eloise be brought under the care of her father, Rowena's son, Reggie, a drug addict whom Elliot blames for the negligence that led to the death of his own daughter. Elliot finds himself deeply entrenched in a custody battle and will stop at nothing to keep his granddaughter from coming under the watch of her reckless father. With the best intentions at heart, both families fight for what they feel is right and are soon forced to confront their true feelings about race, forgiveness, and understanding. Anchored by an all-star cast and based on real events, the movie is a look at two seemingly different worlds, in which nothing is as simple as black or white.

BLACK SEA
STARRING: Jude Law, Scott McNairy, Karl Davies
RATING: R (for language throughout, some graphic images and violence)
GENRE: DRAMA/THRILLER
RUN TIME: 115 min

After serving in the navy commanding submarines, Captain Robinson has worked for the past decade doing salvage work for the Agora Corporation. Despite his service, they let him go, a development that doesn't sit well with him, especially since he realizes he lost his wife and 12-year-son due to his long hours working for them. When he learns from a similarly fired coworker of a potentially lucrative mission that could screw over his former company, he jumps at the chance.

It seems that back during WWII, Stalin offered to pay Hitler a handsome sum in gold bars if the latter agreed not to invade the former's country. But the German U-boat carrying that ended up at the bottom of the Black and the rest is history. Agora has found the long-sunken U-boat, but can't get to it at the moment due to the current Russia-Georgia conflict. A rich investor, however, is willing to front the money if Robinson can put together a submarine crew, travel down to the U-boat, and steal the gold away, with their cut being a percentage of the recovered gold bars.

Robinson agrees and soon puts together a mixed crew of both British and Russian sailors. On the former side, there's Reynolds, his right-hand man; temperamental Australian diver Fraser; older diver Peters; and a young homeless man, Tobin, who Robinson feels sorry for and brings onboard despite his lack of experience.
That doesn't sit well with all of the Russians, including Zaytsev, the mechanic who must get an old Russian sub operational again, and Morozov who casts a wary eye on these strangers. More willing to work together is Blackie, who serves as the crew's translator, while Baba works as their sonar operator. Joining them is Daniels who works for the rich investor and isn't pleased about unexpectedly being forced to go along on the mission.

Needing to sneak under the Russian navy, locate the sub, remove the gold via an underwater operation, and then sail away, Robinson does his best to keep his lean crew focused on the job. But when things start going wrong, it appears the mission could unravel at any moment, possibly putting the lives of all involved at risk.

FEW BEST MEN, A
STARRING: Rebel Wilson, Olivia Newton-John
RATING: NR
GENRE: COMEDY
RUN TIME: 97 min

David and Mia meet and fall in love during a holiday romance. After a week, David proposes and they plan to marry in a few days. David goes home to England and gets his three best friends to return with him to Australia for the wedding. Soon, havoc ensues when the trio accidentally steal drugs, are chased by a mobster, and get the father-in-law's sheep stoned.

LOST RIVER
STARRING: Christina Hendricks, Iain DeCaestecker, Matt Smith, Rob Zabrecky, Saoirse Ronan
RATING: R (for disturbing violent images, language and some sexual content)
GENRE: THRILLER
RUN TIME: 95 min

In a small town in Detroit, there lives Billy and her two sons, Bones and Franky. Billy and Bones both love Franky but are fairly distant from each other. In his spare time, Bones goes around the abandoned houses in town to look for spare scrap parts while avoiding the town's vicious criminal Bully. Bully catches Bones taking something from a home, which he claims to be his own property. Bones runs away as Bully screams maniacally. Billy meets with the bank manager Dave since she is unable to repay a loan that Carl (the father of her sons) left her so that she could stay in her grandmother's home. She has no job or source of income, leaving her in a tight situation. Dave suggests Billy to a job in town.
A group of construction workers begin tearing down the houses in the neighborhood. One man spray-paints a D on Billy's house. We meet the family's neighbor Rat, who lives with her grandmother and her pet rat Nick. Rat sings a melancholic tune about someone loving her. Bones takes a look underwater in the nearby river to see many discarded materials and constructions. He meets Rat, who tells him that there used to be a town that was flooded when a reservoir was built, hence the name "Lost River". Rat mentions having a video of it that her grandmother has kept for years. She notes that the only way to break the "curse" of the land is to get a piece of land from underwater and bring it to the surface. Billy is taken by a friendly cab driver to a burlesque studio downtown. She enters among the crowded audience to see a show put on by the main performer, Cat. The appeal of the show is a realistically gory murder show where Cat gets stabbed multiple times and has her "blood" spray all over the delighted audience. Billy goes backstage and meets with Cat, who asks her what kind of experience in performing she has.

Bones goes to Rat's home and watches the video that features her grandmother. Later, they go out to a gas station store and encounter Bully with his henchman Face, whose lips were cut off by Bully, leaving him horribly disfigured. Bones hides from Bully as he starts to talk to Rat. To protect Bones, Rat accepts Bully's offer when he opts to give her a ride home. He takes her home and finds Nick. He grabs the rat and viciously kills it in front of Rat. Billy has to take Franky to work since Bones was out with Rat. For her performance, Billy makes it look like she's cutting off her face, which excites the audience. She later sits with Dave, who hosts the joint. He disapproves of her having her son there, and then he sings a song to the audience. He takes her home and makes a pass at her. It becomes increasingly threatening when he says he likes to fuck and that it's a problem for him. Billy tries to talk him down, though since Dave is half-deaf, he mostly hears mumbles. The next shot shows Billy lying on the couch, crying.

Bones tells Rat that he knows how to break the curse. He leaves her with Franky while he goes into the river to cut off the head of a dinosaur statue. Meanwhile, Face enters Rat's home and sets it on fire with her grandmother still there. He goes down with the flames as Rat goes to find her grandmother. She fails to get her out of there but she gets Franky away from the fire. Bones sets a car on fire and waits for Bully to come driving by. He hurls the dinosaur head at Bully's windshield, causing him to crash against the burning car and get launched out where he drowns in the water.
At work, Billy is sealed in a chamber like some kind of doll while Dave performs a sexual dance routine around her, making her really uncomfortable. She is let out of the chamber and she stabs Dave in the ear, leaving him to bleed out. Billy returns to find her sons and Rat sitting on the steps of their home while Rat's house continues to burn. With the help of the cab driver, the four of them run away and leave Lost River behind them.

MISS JULIE
STARRING: Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell
RATING: PG-13 (for mature thematic material involving sexuality, disturbing images, and language)
GENRE: DRAMA/ROMANCE
RUN TIME: 129 min

Miss Julie depicts a fierce battle between a man and a woman, a struggle for power and dominance enacted through a cruel and compulsive game of seduction and repulsion. TURNER
STARRING: Timothy Spall, Dorothy Atkinson, Marion Bailey, Lesley Manville, Martin Savage, Paul Jesson, Ruth Sheen
RATING: R (for some sexual content )
GENRE: DRAMA
RUN TIME: 150 min

It's the 1800s and Joseph Mallord William Turner is a renowned painter in high society circles, specializing in landscape works. His assistant is his elderly father, William, and they're both tended to by Turner's long-standing and long-suffering housekeeper, Hannah Danby, who he occasionally uses for his sexual gratification. But he has no intention of getting romantically involved with her, a stance he also applies to her aunt, Sarah Danby, with whom he fathered two daughters, Evelina and Georgiana, now both young women.
When not dealing with his contemporaries, including the unhappy Benjamin Haydon who borrows money from him to get by, as well as those who love his art, including John Ruskin, Turner searches for inspiration for his next works. He ends up traveling to the seaside town of Margate where he rents a room from Sophia Booth and her husband.

With time passing by, she ends up widowed, eventually resulting in her and Turner entering into something of a romantic relationship. That's all while he must contend with those in the art world starting to turn on him and his works.

MURDER OF A CAT
STARRING: Fran Kranz, Nikki Reed, J.K. Simmons, Blythe Danner, Greg Kinnear, Ted Raimi
RATING: NR
GENRE: COMEDY
RUN TIME: 100 min

A man investigates the murder of his cat. Clinton Moisey is an iconoclastic, artisan action-figure designer who still lives in his mom's basement, and is, by the standards of the world, a full-blown loser. But Clinton doesn't have time to care about what others think of him; he's too busy running a yard sale where he promotes his hardboiled detective toy line with his pet cat and best friend, "Mouser." When Clinton wakes up one morning to find Mouser impaled by a crossbow arrow, he is devastated. Realizing that the local Sheriff is only interested in flirting with his mom, Clinton sets off on his own to find out who killed Mouser and why. As Clinton delves deeper into the case, he encounters a free-spirited weed dealer and part-time hair stylist to the elderly, a squeaky-clean Korean store clerk with a dark side, and a local celebrity on the verge of a nervous breakdown, ultimately uncovering a town-wide conspiracy far greater than he ever imagined. The comedic film is a modern-day film noir set in the mundane world of the suburbs.

PYRAMID, THE
STARRING: Ashley Hinshaw, James Buckley, Denis O'Hare, Christa Nicola, Amir K
RATING: R (for some horror violence and bloody images)
GENRE: HORROR
RUN TIME: 89 min

The ancient wonders of the world have long cursed explorers who've dared to uncover their secrets. As they unlock the horrific secrets buried within, they realize they aren't just trapped, they are being hunted.

SELMA
STARRING: David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson, Cuba Gooding, Alessandro Nivola, Giovanni Ribisi, Tim Roth
RATING: PG-13 (for disturbing thematic material including violence, a suggestive moment, and brief strong language)
GENRE: DRAMA
RUN TIME: 128 min

It's early 1965 and despite the passing of the Civil Rights Act a year earlier, black citizens in the American South, such as Annie Lee Cooper, still face racism so vehement that they find it all but impossible to register to vote. While members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, such as James Forman and John Lewis, think they're making progress, they can't have much success, what with Alabama Governor George Wallace happily allowing the likes of racist sheriff Jim Clark to keep suppressing the black folks.

As a result, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. has been pressing Lyndon B. Johnson to do something, but the President is reluctant for a number of reasons. FBI director J. Edger Hoover isn't pleased with King and sets out to bring him and his movement down and wiretaps all involved. That also includes anonymous harassing phone calls, something that doesn't sit well with Martin's wife, Coretta, who's becoming increasingly tired of his work keeping him away from their family, and worries that something bad is going to happen to him.

Undeterred by any of that, King decides to travel to Selma and join members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, including Reverend Hosea Williams and James Bevel, among many others. Their plan is to march from Selma to Montgomery to protest -- non-violently -- the lack of voting rights for blacks. But their first attempt is met by brutal violence at the hands of Sheriff Clark and his men as well as state troopers. Determined to succeed, they then plan to try again, all while various power players watch on from a distance, unsure of what will happen next.

SPARE PARTS
STARRING: George Lopez, Jamie Lee Curtis, Carlos Pena Vega, Marisa Tomei, Esai Morales, Jose Julian
RATING: PG-13 (for some language and violence)
GENRE: DRAMA/ROMANCE
RUN TIME: 112 min

A true life story about four Hispanic high school students who form a robotics club under the leadership of their school's newest teacher, Fredi. Unsettled by glimpses of ghostly figures that only she can see, she believes something malevolent is stalking the children. The previous governess died under curious circumstances, is she trying to tell the new governess something?

An anonymous narrator recalls a Christmas Eve gathering at an old house, where guests listen to one another’s ghost stories. A guest named Douglas introduces a story that involves two children—Flora and Miles—and his sister’s governess, with whom he was in love. After procuring the governess’s written record of events from his home, he provides a few introductory details. A handsome bachelor persuaded the governess to take a position as governess for his niece and nephew in an isolated country home after the previous governess died. Douglas begins to read from the written record, and the story shifts to the governess’s point of view as she narrates her strange experience.

The governess begins her story with her first day at Bly, the country home, where she meets Flora and a maid named Mrs. Grose. The governess is nervous but feels relieved by Flora’s beauty and charm. The next day she receives a letter from her employer, which contains a letter from Miles’s headmaster saying that Miles cannot return to school. The letter does not specify what Miles has done to deserve expulsion, and, alarmed, the governess questions Mrs. Grose about it. Mrs. Grose admits that Miles has on occasion been bad, but only in the ways boys ought to be. The governess is reassured as she drives to meet Miles.

One evening, as the governess strolls around the grounds, she sees a strange man in a tower of the house and exchanges an intense stare with him. She says nothing to Mrs. Grose. Later, she catches the same man glaring into the dining-room window, and she rushes outside to investigate. The man is gone, and the governess looks into the window from outside. Her image in the window frightens Mrs. Grose, who has just walked into the room. The governess discusses her two experiences with Mrs. Grose, who identifies the strange man as Peter Quint, a former valet who is now dead. Convinced that the ghost seeks Miles, the governess becomes rigid in her supervision of the children. One day, when the governess is at the lake with Flora, she sees a woman dressed in black and senses that the woman is Miss Jessel, her dead predecessor. The governess is certain Flora was aware of the ghost’s presence but intentionally kept quiet. The governess again questions Mrs. Grose about Miles’s misbehavior. Mrs. Grose reveals that Quint had been “too free” with Miles, and Miss Jessel with Flora. The governess is on her guard, but the days pass without incident, and Miles and Flora express increased affection for the governess.

The lull is broken one evening when something startles the governess from her reading. She rises to investigate, moving to the landing above the staircase. There, a gust of wind extinguishes her candle, and she sees Quint halfway up the stairs. She refuses to back down, exchanging another intense stare with Quint until he vanishes. Back in her room, the governess finds Flora’s bed curtains pulled forward, but Flora herself is missing. Noticing movement under the window blind, the governess watches as Flora emerges from behind it. The governess questions Flora about what she’s been doing, but Flora’s explanation is unrevealing. The governess does not sleep well during the next few nights. One night, she sees the ghost of Miss Jessel sitting on the bottom stair, her head in her hands. Later, when the governess finally allows herself to go to sleep at her regular hour, she is awoken after midnight to find her candle extinguished and Flora by the window. Careful not to disturb Flora, the governess leaves the room to find a window downstairs that overlooks the same view. Looking out, she sees the faraway figure of Miles on the lawn.

Later, the governess discusses with Mrs. Grose her conversation with Miles, who claimed that he wanted to show the governess that he could be “bad.” The governess concludes that Flora and Miles frequently meet with Miss Jessel and Quint. At this, Mrs. Grose urges the governess to appeal to her employer, but the governess refuses, reminding her colleague that the children’s uncle does not want to be bothered. She threatens to leave if Mrs. Grose writes to him. On the walk to church one Sunday, Miles broaches the topic of school to the governess. He says he wants to go back and declares he will make his uncle come to Bly. The governess, shaken, does not go into church. Instead, she returns to the house and plots her departure. She sits on the bottom stair but springs up when she remembers seeing Miss Jessel there. She enters the schoolroom and finds Miss Jessel sitting at the table. She screams at the ghost, and the ghost vanishes. The governess decides she will stay at Bly. Mrs. Grose and the children return, saying nothing about the governess’s absence at church. The governess agrees to write to her employer.

That evening, the governess listens outside Miles’s door. He invites her in, and she questions him. She embraces him impulsively. The candle goes out, and Miles shrieks. The next day Miles plays the piano for the governess. She suddenly realizes she doesn’t know where Flora is. She and Mrs. Grose find Flora by the lake. There, the governess sees an apparition of Miss Jessel. She points it out to Flora and Mrs. Grose, but both claim not to see it. Flora says that the governess is cruel and that she wants to get away from her, and the governess collapses on the ground in hysterics. The next day, Mrs. Grose informs the governess that Flora is sick. They decide Mrs. Grose will take Flora to the children’s uncle while the governess stays at Bly with Miles. Mrs. Grose informs the governess that Luke didn’t send the letter she wrote to her employer, because he couldn’t find it. With Flora and Mrs. Grose gone, Miles and the governess talk after dinner. The governess asks if he took her letter. He confesses, and the governess sees Quint outside. She watches Quint in horror, then points him out to Miles, who asks if it is Peter Quint and looks out the window in vain. He cries out, then falls into the governess’s arms, dead.

INHERENT VICE
STARRING: Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Katherine Waterston, Martin Short, Owen Wilson, Eric Roberts, Benicio Del Toro
RATING: R (for drug use throughout, sexual content, graphic nudity, language and some violence)
GENRE: Drama
RUN TIME: 148 min

It's 1970 and Larry "Doc" Sportello is some sort of doctor who seemingly gets more business from being a private investigator. When his ex-girlfriend, Shasta Fay Hepworth, shows up and states that her married real estate investor lover, Michael Z. "Mickey" Wolfmann, is in trouble, which piques his interest. Shasta states that Wolfmann's wife, Sloane, is plotting with her "spiritual advisor," Riggs Warbling, to have him committed to a mental asylum. Rather than go to his deputy district attorney girlfriend, Penny Kimball, for help, Doc starts nosing around. When he goes to a new neighborhood development that Mickey has just started, he has a brief run in with a sex shop worker, Jade, before being knocked out.

When he comes to, Doc finds himself next to the body of Mickey's bodyguard, Glenn Charlock, and thus LAPD homicide detective Christian F. "Bigfoot" Bjornsen obviously thinks Doc is guilty, especially now that Mickey is also missing. Bigfoot ends up releasing Doc, thanks to the help of maritime lawyer Sauncho Smilax, Esq., and he next gets a call from Hope Harlingen who states that her musician husband, Coy, is dead, although she doesn't truly believe that. The plot thickens when Doc learns that Coy and Shasta knew each other, and both Coy and Jade mentioned a mysterious boat known as the Golden Fang.

Doc eventually discovers that the corporation behind that is run by a bunch of dentists, including Dr. Rudy Blatnoyd. He just so happens to be involved with bedding and supplying drugs to a former teen runaway, Japonica Fenway, who Doc was earlier tasked to find by her wealthy father. As the number of people somehow involved in this case continues to grow, Doc tries to get to the bottom of their involvement and what all of this means.

MOMMY
STARRING: Anne Dorval, Suzanne Clément, Antoine Olivier Pilon, Patrick Huard, Alexandre Goyette
RATING: R (for language throughout, sexual references and some violence)
GENRE: Drama/Romance
RUN TIME: 139 min

A widowed single mother, raising her violent son alone, finds new hope when a mysterious neighbor inserts herself into their household. A feisty widowed single mom finds herself burdened with the full-time custody of her unpredictable 15-year-old ADHD son. As they struggle to make ends meet, Kyla, the peculiar new neighbor across the street, offers her help. Together, they find a new sense of balance, and hope is regained.

Forty-six year old Diane Després - "Die" - has been widowed for three years. Considered white trash by many, Die does whatever she needs, including strutting her body in front of male employers who will look, to make an honest living. That bread-winning ability is affected when she makes the decision to remove her only offspring, fifteen year old Steve Després, from her previously imposed institutionalization, one step below juvenile detention. She institutionalized him shortly following her husband's death due to Steve's attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and his violent outbursts. He was just kicked out of the latest in a long line of facilities for setting fire to the cafeteria, in turn injuring another boy. She made this decision to deinstitutionalize him as she didn't like the alternative, sending him into more restrictive juvenile detention from which he would probably never be rehabilitated. However, with this deinstitutionalization, she has to take care of him.

PADDINGTON
STARRING: voice of Ben Winshaw, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Ben Whishaw, Michael Gambon, Imelda Staunton, Nicole Kidman
RATING: PG (for mild action and rude humor)
GENRE: Family/Dramedy
RUN TIME: 95 min

Long ago in deepest, darkest Peru, British explorer Montgomery Clyde discovered a small number of intelligent bears, and named them Uncle Pastuzo and Aunt Lucy. Not only did he teach them how to speak English, but he also introduced them to marmalade and invited them to visit London where they'd certainly be welcomed by all.

Years later, the two bears are living happily with their young nephew when a terrible earthquake strikes. With Uncle Pastuzo gone and their home destroyed, Aunt Lucy puts her nephew on a boat headed for London, hoping he'll find the past explorer as well as a good home and future. But the young bear doesn't know what to do upon his arrival. Thankfully, Mary Brown decides that she, her husband, Henry, and their kids, Judy and Jonathan, should give the bear -- who she's named Paddington, after a train station stop -- a place to stay for the night.

That doesn't sit well with their nosey neighbor, Mr. Curry, while Henry -- who's a risk analyst by trade -- thinks it's a bad idea, and Judy doesn't want to be bothered, what with being embarrassed by her family already. But Jonathan is happy to have Paddington there, as is their housekeeper, Mrs. Bird, while Mary makes it her mission to help the bear find the explorer. Someone interested in getting her hands on Paddington, however, is Millicent, a sadistic taxidermist who wants to stuff the bear and put him on display in the British Natural History Museum. As she sets her sights on doing that, Mary and eventually the rest of the family not only chip in to help Paddington find Montgomery, but also start to feel like he's a member of their family.

WEDDING RINGER, THE
STARRING: Josh Gad, Kevin Hart, Affion Crockett, Kaley Cuoco, Jorge Garcia, Dan Gill
RATING: R (for crude and sexual content, language throughout, some drug use, and brief graphic nudity)
GENRE: Comedy
RUN TIME: 101 min

Doug, a successful attorney, can't believe that such an attractive woman as Gretchen Palmer has agreed to marry him. One problem. An only child, he spent his formative years moving around with his globe-trotting parents, and his adult years building his law practice. He really doesn't have any male friends he can call on to be his best man and groomsmen. And his bride-to-be has a maid of honor plus seven bridesmaids.

Enter Jimmy Callahan, a slick entrepreneur who runs a best-man-for-hire service. Jimmy provides full services for his clients. He'll craft an entire identity of a "best friend," throw bachelor parties, take part in rehearsal dinners, and stay with the groom right through the wedding reception. And then he is gone. This time, though, the challenge is great. He's never put together a party of seven groomsmen, a package he calls the "Golden Tuxedo." He's also never had to deal with a family such as Gretchen's, which includes an overbearing father, Ed; a clueless mother; an overly inquisitive sister, Alison; and a grandma who ends up the charred victim of a meet-and-greet lunch gone wrong.

With only 10 days to plan, Jimmy assembles a motley crew of groomsmen and gives them each identities based on the lies Doug has told to Gretchen. These misfits include Kip, a buff male model with a stutter, who masquerades as a podiatrist; Lurch, who used to be on Jimmy's payroll until his wife forced him to gain other, more honorable employment; Reggie, an airport security guard itching to do something more fun; Otis, a gentle-giant limo driver just itching to help Jimmy out on one of his scams; Bronstein, who's forced to masquerade as a lounge singer and major Tom Jones fan; Endo, an Asian man who pretends to be a childhood friend of Doug's now working as a school principal; and Plunkett, a recently sprung ex-con with a violent rap sheet.
