11,800 hours… This is the amount of time it has been since Kit’s initial contact with the Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services (Pennsylvania). In this time she has had only 6 (six) hours of Orientation and Mobility services. This is basically an evaluation phase and not really considered official training.

My own Orientation and Mobility training and first contact didn’t take nearly as long as this. In fact from my first contact with Montgomery County to the time I actually started O&M training I’d guess was about 4 months. After this it was basically uninterrupted services until I finished.

Why such a difference?

It truly is mind boggling the difference in the level of services provided. Simply put the Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services (BBVS) is a state run organization and they serve a vastly larger area then what the Montgomery County Association for the Blind does.

The reasons we chose to go with BBVS for Kit’s services as opposed to MCAB (where I had mine) where really simple. We knew some one who worked for them! The instructor had oodles of free time and would basically be able to see Kit at any time through out the week… even offering training on weekends if needed. – This would be a great option, because at the time Kit was still seeing multiple doctors, and could not really settle into a fixed schedule of weekly visits like I did.

Our instructor friend gathered all of the necessary paperwork they needed and submitted it to BBVS for review. Countless misplaced documents and lost faxes (otherwise known as the BBVS Business Office black hole) and some necessary certification red tape later – about 12 months later…!

Kit was finally cleared for her evaluation time of 6 hours around the middle of October 2011. The evaluation is a way for the O&M instructor to gather information about the student and assess their needs; and is a means of determining a lesson plan to continue future O&M training with set goals. – Kit obviously needs more training. So this was noted in the O&M report – this report is then sent to BBVS as a request for more training hours. (This is how instructors get paid for their time).

This is where we stand today.

The request for more training hours was submitted and we can only guess it’s sitting on some ones desk (or the quantum singularity of a black hole). – The latest we hear is that BBVS simply “does not have the budget” to provide training at this time. (as of February 2012).

I have contacted a few advocate groups. And it’s funny that the mere mention of the Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services (Philadelphia) office brings groans of dislike and drudgery. To be told that it’s COMMON for clients to wait 12-18 MONTHS before they receive services. This is truly disgraceful!

The fact of the matter is that Kit’s life – and to an extent mine… is on hold until she can get proper Orientation and Mobility training. She is not an independent traveler. She can not cross a street, navigate to a chosen location, travel in unfamiliar areas or ride the bus to meet up with friends. More importantly she can not independently travel to her doctors appointments! Also basic safety skills could be significantly improved if she had proper training. (blind people call this “self protection techniques”. – not knocking your head on the cabinet, for example). These are all things a properly trained Orientation and Mobility specialist would teach.

It seems the consensus in “Big Government” is that it’s OK to wait for services. After all, a disabled person has nothing better to do with their life. I suppose they think it’s cheaper to pay SSI benefits of $8000-$12,000 a year then pay for proper training that would allow the person to get off of SSI and off ‘the system’ to get a real job.

This is far from over.

As I completed my Mobility training with Elaine and look forward to my new life with Kit. I never thought that I would be teaching some one else the lessons I’ve learned. But here I am. The one I love is blind and in fact Kit is more blind then me. Kit has limited light perception and can see shapes, shadows, light and dark… and only some color in her left eye and she is completely blind in her right. Kit’s blindness was caused by non-cancerous tumors forming around her optic nerves from Erdheim–Chester Disease (ECD).

No one ever expects they would become some one else’s eyes to the world. But that’s essentially what I am for Kit. Not that I mind being a human guide dog… In fact I quite like it. Besides she thinks I make great arm candy! Though she complains about not being able to properly grip my arm for proper sighted-guide technique. (Sorry I can’t help my massive triceps, after all you are marrying a judo instructor).

When guiding a blind person you use a technique called sighted-guide. This allows both people to travel safely and quickly. The blind persons safety is the responsibility of the sighted-guide. The blind person grips the sighted guide’s arm just above the elbow. Your guide should walk a half step in front of you and to the side. As you begin to walk, your guide should always remain in front, explaining the terrain ahead.

If the two of you are approaching a narrow space, your guide should signal the change by putting his hand behind his back. You then move directly behind your guide and slide your hand down to the guide’s wrist.

When approaching the drop off, your guide should stop with his or her toes close to the drop off and announce: “Curb up,” or “Stairs going down“. Then, the guide should step forward and allow you to find the stair or curb with your toes. If there is a handrail, your guide should always position you on the side of the handrail and let you know where it is so you may use it.

When going through a door, you will need to know two things from your guide: 1) Does the door open to the right or to the left? and 2) Does the door open out or in? If the door opens on the right, you should be on the guide’s right side. If the door opens on the left, you should be on the guide’s left side. This may require a change of sides.

Some tips for sighted guide:

When approaching someone with vision loss who appears to need help, ask, “Do you need assistance?” Do not assume the person needs help. Typically, people with vision loss know where they are going and do not need assistance.

If the person does need assistance, touch the back of your hand to the back of the person’s hand. (Announce that you are going to do this first.) This gives the person an idea of where your arm is located.

Ask, “Where do you need to go?“

Do not leave the person you’re guiding in the middle of an open area. Guide him or her to the final destination before letting go, and tell the person you are leaving.

Act as the person’s eyes. Remember, he or she is counting on you to provide accurate information about the environment. Announce obstacles, such as a curb, stairs, or other danger points, before getting to them.

Remember to frequently check over your shoulder on the side that the person is walking on for potential obstructions and other danger points.

Needless to say Kit and I have gotten very proficient with sighted guide technique over our time together. We walk almost daily at the mall. And I’m happy to report that with simple walking (mostly), Kit lost nearly 60 pounds since we’ve met. (Weight she gained while on medications).

Several phone calls later, some as I was still doing Mobility training on the train in Philly. I was invited by Kit to visit King of Prussia Mall with her. She told me it would be her and her sister coming to pick me up. – Could it be? Was this a… DATE? Sure enough Kit arrived on a very snowy winter day with her sister – and, her mother… and her father! Crap, so much for subtle family introductions!

A short time after this innocent little “date” at the mall that I was still a little clueless about. And a few more phone calls… Mom and I where invited to Kit’s house for Christmas dinner. Sure enough the night was fun filled with talk and good food. As I was sitting next to Kit talking, the time was getting late and it came time to leave. She placed her head on my shoulder and whispered shyly “Can I come with you; can I spend the night”. (Gulp)… “I don’t want to let you go”…

Kit headed off to the kitchen to have a private conversation with her parents… as I wait nervously with my heart pounding… “Well you are almost 30” I hear her father say. – So, with the OK from her folks Kit was off. As her mom gathered things for the nights stay, a change of clothes and the all important medications. (Kit was on nearly half a dozen at the time). Kit was free! – and I had a girl spending the night! Things sure do happen fast, don’t they?

A few days later it would be Kit’s birthday (December 31st), and she would spend the night again. This time things would be a little more planned. I gave her a nice bouquet of Stargazer Lilies (one of her favorite flowers) and a nice sterling silver angel necklace for her birthday.

It’s official, we where dating…

So, as you see things moved quickly along with Kit spending more and more time with me. As I really could back-blog this story for a very long time I will stop here… It’s time to move forward.

On December 21st, 2010 – during a Full Lunar Eclipse – (actually the morning after). I took to one knee and proposed to Kit… Simply saying “Don’t open it unless your ready…” But she did… and of course, she said YES! See our engagement story as shown on NBC10 below!

This eclipse was the first total lunar eclipse to occur on the day of the Northern Winter Solstice since 1638. How romanic and unique? Sorry if you want to try this yourself, you’ll have to wait another 372 years.

“This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.” ~ Morpheus

Last we talked I was in the midst of Orientation and Mobility training. Well, I finished that with just a few more trips to Philly and no longer need the service. I’m sure I could have a few refresher classes if needed, like trips to the airport, but I have not needed that yet.

Fast forward a little bit and I was invited to give a judo demonstration for the Montgomery County Association for the Blind again (See Pottstown Judo Visits MCAB Day Camp post from 2009). In return as a thank you the camp director invited me to a handicapped SCUBA event he was taking the campers to. The event was held to showcase the International Association of Handicapped Divers.

It was a gray, cold and wet October 17th, 2009. The event was simple enough. Show up, have a brief safety overview, learn a little about SCUBA equipment and hop in a nice heated pool with a dive instructor and paddle around a bit. (The heated part was nice, it was 45º outside; the water in the pool was about 84º)

As we waited in the tent getting our safety briefing, we where introduced to Kit McElwee. Kit is an IAHD Certified Blind SCUBA Diver. She was one of the first to graduate from the local program at this particular shop. – Her comments where brief – your going to get wet – your going to be breathing underwater. I learned later she was not feeling so well that day, and was just getting over a case of Shingles; can’t blame her…

After I finished my pool session… Mom and I where roaming around the shop and we literally bumped into Kit. I stopped and talked to her, as it was fascinating to talk about her SCUBA adventurers… and I told her about my Orientation and Mobility training. – What I didn’t know was, I had actually seen Kit on TV about a year earlier in a news segment about blind SCUBA. – I had no idea it was her, until I looked it up after I returned home. (See Kit’s original NBC10 interview “Game Changers: A Mission to Swim” below)

View more videos at: http://nbcphiladelphia.com.

I also discovered later that Kit had the same Orientation and Mobility instructor I did. I discovered this when Elaine gave me Kit’s phone number (with Kit’s permission)… Kit was trying to get in contact with me. That day at the SCUBA shop we talked for about an hour. – Can you say, missed the vibe? We never got each others numbers to stay in touch. (oops…)

So, it’s true I had Kit’s number from Elaine, but I never called her. Busy, work, nerves… who knew, but a few weeks later as I was sitting at my computer working on some photos – the phone rang, mom answered it and brought it in to me ‘it’s for you…’

As mom handed me the phone, I groaned and grumbled, how dare some one interrupt my work! HELLO… and a soft kind voice on the other end says “Hi… this is Kit, we talked at the dive shop a few weeks ago…” Puzzled, but in a flash I recall… Oh my god it’s her! By this time I had looked up Kit’s first video interview online, I knew who she was.

To this day neither of us can recall what we talked about. But we know we talked for nearly FIVE HOURS… and we would have likely talked longer if Kit’s mom had not wanted her off the phone, some time after midnight.

In 1921, James Biggs, a photographer from Bristol, England, became blind following an accident. Because he was feeling uncomfortable with the amount of traffic around his home, he painted his walking stick white to be more easily visible. In 1930, the late George A. Bonham, President of the Peoria Lions Club (Illinois) introduced the idea of using the white cane with a red band as a means of assisting the blind in independent mobility. The Peoria Lions approved the idea, white canes were made and distributed, and the Peoria City Council adopted an ordinance giving the bearers the right-of-way to cross the street.

News of the club’s activity spread quickly to other Lions clubs throughout the United States, and their visually handicapped friends experimented with the white canes. Overwhelming acceptance of the white cane idea by the blind and sighted alike quickly gave cane users a unique method of identifying their special need for travel consideration among their sighted counterparts. Also in 1931, in France, Guilly d’Herbemont recognized the danger to blind people in traffic and launched a national “white stick movement” for blind people. She donated 5,000 white canes to people in Paris.

Today white cane laws are on the books of EVERY STATE in the US and many other countries, providing blind persons a legal status in traffic. The white cane now universally acknowledges that the bearer is blind. For specific information contact your local government office for motor vehicles.

Model White Cane Law

White Cane Safety Days:

To make the American people more fully aware of the meaning of the white cane and of the need for motorists to exercise special care for the blind person who carries it, on October 6, 1964, the U.S. Congress approved a resolution authorizing the President of the US to annually issue a proclamation designating October 15th as “National White Cane Safety Day.”

The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), a leading organization for the blind, has established the third week in May as “White Cane Week.” During this week, a special concentration of efforts to educate the public concerning the hopes and aspirations of the blind is emphasized.

It should be noted White Cane Law, also extends to all persons with a Guide or Service Dog as well. Please respect the White Cane Law and what it means. Don’t be a jerk!

After we arrived at Market Street Station, we took a moment to look around. The train platform area is very large. Elaine took time to explain how the station was setup. There are two sides, in-bound and out-bound, with two tracks each (a total of 4 tracks), and an A-Section and B-Section. Depending on your destination, you need to be in either A-Section or B-Section and on Track 1, 2, 3, or 4. It’s really not too hard to understand, because one side is always IN, and the other side is always OUT. All the trains are also color-coded.

We identified the track numbers; they are clearly marked in huge letters above the trains stop area. I can read them with little trouble. We walked the length of the platform and located the A-Section and B-Section steps that lead to the main level of the station and all the shops above.

We went to the second level and looked around, again a very large open area, with shops and steps on the outside. Some areas of the station in this level are poorly lit. This is unsettling to me, because it’s even harder for me to see. Using the stations electronic signage is useless to me because of the way the LED’s are setup. By the time I get close enough to read a sign, the LED’s are no longer at a suitable viewing angle and they disappear. So much for using the schedule board.

We located the restrooms, newsstands, and small flower shop. These are good landmarks. We also noticed the entrance to The Gallery, an area of the station that opens to the major shopping store area above; a major attraction of the station.

Elaine explained how the station covered three city blocks underground from 10th Street to 12th Street. And we located the steps to venture up to street level. We did walk around some of the building at street level. The noise of traffic and the volume of people was a bit overwhelming. However, a street level lesson would come later. So we headed back into the station.

Elaine sent me around to locate different areas and the landmarks we saw. We also took the time to talk to customer service and see when the next train would be back to return home and Norristown Transportation Center. That being the 2:17, Track 1, Section A.

This concluded our lesson for the day. So I found the section I was to wait in and Elaine snuck off to blend in with the crowd and observe. Obviously she had to ride the train home with me but by blending in and observing it allows me to make my own decisions.

As I waited for the train, a large group of older ladies descended down the steps and milled around in front of me. I thought I was about to get swept up with a group of church ladies or something. One of them called my name! Very perplexed and wondering who the hell could it be… I knew the voice, but drew a blank on the face, as I often do… I come to find that it was Mrs. Landis, one of my former Pottstown Middle School teachers. Of all the people you’d never expect to meet, never in my life would I have thought about meeting her in the middle of Philly – at a train platform. She was in town with about 30 other retired Pottstown teachers (the large group) for an art tour and was heading home. Like me, to Norristown Transportation Center, then driving.

I explained to her what I was up to, and she was impressed, and proud that I’m getting out and about… The train pulled in, and we where off… I grabbed a seat near the front; the car was kind of full so Mrs. Landis took the seat next to me. At least now I’d have some one to talk to on the way home; and we did!

The rest of the trip was uneventful. As the train pulled into NTC, I said goodbye to Mrs. Landis and I left in a hurry with Elaine to help guide me to the bus, the connection time was less then 8 minutes! If I’d miss the bus, I’d be stuck at NTC for another hour!

She rushed me to the bus and I headed home. Still baffled of all things to see a former teacher of mine on the train!

Sorry for neglecting you guys again. Orientation and Mobility this past week was fun, and kind of scary. As you can tell from the title of this post, I “graduated” to SEPTA Rail travel.

This was my first EVER trip on a train or to a train station… EVER! Far be it from the little things that amuse folks like me that have never traveled before. I’d happily make a trip to just go sit on a blog friends couch to simply say I made the trip! – I’m a little crazy I know.

The trip started like all others I have been on for the past few weeks. Catch the SEPTA 93 bus here in town and ride it all the way to Noristown Transpertation Center (NTC). But Elaine was not meeting me at the bus this time; it was up to me to navigate across the NTC (not really a short walk and across traffic) to meet her at the SEPTA Train platform at NTC, to catch the 11:17AM R6 train to Market Street Station; one of the first main stops along the line.

Meeting Elaine at the station platform, she was happy and I was relieved to have arrived in one peace. She told me when the train was coming, and where I was to ask to get off. She gave me my SEPTA Training Pass (cool pass that allows O&M students like me to ride for free with an instructor). She told me to mind my first step up because this platform was not level with the train, and it’s kind of a big one. And like bus rides to let the conductor know to please announce my stop and to make sure this was actually the R6 train!

With a loud squeal and a hiss, the train pulls in. A rush of people flood to get on. Up the steps and make a right I went. The interior was very nice, with plush seats and well lit, a row of three seats on one side and two on the other. I went about half way down and plopped in. Elaine snuck off further away, but still in the same car to observe.

With a toot-toot and a hum, the train was off with in a minute. The conductor made his way down collecting tickets. I showed him my pass with little fuss (some times drivers fuss!) and ask him to announce Market Street Station… no problem sir.

The train ride was about 40-minutes to Market Street Station and I sat back to enjoy the view. The most notable landmark this line went past was Temple University; I could look out and see the football field as we passed. COOL!

We arrived at Market Street Station, and the conductor announced the stop, by then the train was full of people and students, and a flood of people and me, made the mass exit to the platform. I stepped off to the side and waited for Elaine so we could continue the lesson in and around the station.

To be continued…

Or not…

At least that’s what the fuss is about now. As if there is not enough floating around already. Incase you have been living under a rock, you probably already know that on September 8th, President Obama is to address the nations school children…

The White House has provided schools with information and a “lesson plan” of sorts to guide them and the nations children during and after the speech. Suggested causes of action after the speech are essays and questions like “How can you help the president…” You can read the suggestions here…

My understanding of the speech is that of a pep talk of sorts. About education and to get children excited to learn, and take pride in their education. – But since it is The President some brainless adults seem to think there is some sort of “political brainwashing” going on here. That this speech will be used to push an agenda. – Did I miss something, isn’t he already in office? That kind of means we are stuck with him for the next 3.5 years at least. And unless I was seeing things on election day, he won, by a frik’n landslide.

So what’s the problem? Many presidents have given speeches to the nations school in the past including President Ronald Reagan and others. Most schools to my knowledge also televised the inauguration; and as an example our own Pottstown School District HOSTED former president Bill Clinton when he was – formally campaigning for his wife! – DURING SCHOOL HOURS! – Allowing high school and middle school students to attend! – So what makes this speech so different? Maybe it was the money the district received from Clinton for the use of the gym…!

I for one don’t see a problem in this. The simple solution is… if you don’t like it, and you don’t want your child to listen to it… don’t send them to school that day… it’s a very simple concept. Many parents do not permit their children to take part in the mandatory Sex Education talk provided in most 5th grades; they can voluntarily opt-out. I see no one complaining.

Many schools no longer say the Pledge of Allegiance, or allow students that choose to remain seated… Come on people, we have better and bigger things to worry about here then the presidents speech – to encourage their education, so they are not part of the “dumbest” education system on the global scale – you should be HAPPY the president is taking an interest in today’s young people. After all, THEY are the future leaders of the world.

And by the way… if you didn’t vote… SHUT THE FUCK UP! … and if you voted for ‘the other guy‘ and lost… quit being a sore looser…

Isn’t free speech grand? People DIED for this right you know. Or perhaps you didn’t learn that in history class, because your too busy discussing Sex Education for 3rd graders like California.

Wow, sorry… I know it has been some time since I updated my blog about my Orientation and Mobility training. Maybe some of you thought I quit or, perhaps got run over by the bus, no I’m still here. In fact I’ve been very busy with O&M over the past few weeks.

I’ve successfully used our local SEPTA to travel with Elaine and just recently by my self (to meet Elaine) to the Norristown Transportation Center (NTC), the main hub for SEPTA and other connecting buses and trains in our area.

I’ve also rode SEPTA more recently to visit one of my favorite places the Apple Store at King of Prussia Mall. This trip involves one transfer, and takes about one hour and twenty minutes by bus. Let this be said bus travel is not fast. To drive to King of Prussia Mall from my house would take a normal person about 45-minutes.

Reading and understanding bus schedules has been a bit of a challenge for me, not for the fact I don’t know how… but simply because I am a literal person. Bus routes don’t provide intermediate times only times for main stops. Since I am in-between, I find waiting nerve-wracking. If I know something is to be here at X time, it had better be here! – I hate that! 9:30 means 9:30, not 9:45…

Most people wonder how a blind person rides a bus, or knows what bus they are getting on. The simple answer is, we ask. Since I can’t always read the bus sign we always ask the driver “are you going to…” it’s always important to ask where your going, because though a bus may be heading the same direction, it may not be the bus you want.

SEPTA also provides a visually impaired riders kit, or “flag” as some would call it. It’s a little set of cards, and a holder with numbers and letters (large) and also marked in braille. You insert the cards into the holder to indicate your desired bus or train. You hold this at the bus stop to “flag” the driver, they are trained to look for this, and assist you.

Most newer city buses and trains also automatically announce the bus number and destination the bus or train is going to as you get on. “Welcome to SEPTA Route 93, service to Norristown”. – kind of cool eh?

In all my experience in riding local SEPTA has not been a bad one. The drivers seem nice, but are not overly friendly… just the ‘it’s a job’… kind of deal. But they take your questions well and make sure you get a seat. As a disabled person, I always get the seat right behind the driver or across from them.

The characters you meet on the bus are a whole different story. Any thing from your local businessman to your local bum, grandma and grandpa, to mom and dad, and let us not forget the ladies of ill-repute… we got’em all… But I’ll save that for another story.

Did I mention R93 is the bus that passes threw Norristown State Corrections? Do I have your attention?

Needless to say I’m still uncomfortable riding, and transferring. Norristown Transportation Center is big, and it would be easy to get on the wrong bus. But thankfully I can read the bus-stall signs when I’m right on top of them.

Not a comfortable traveler yet… but moving along well…

This is a thought that popped into my head lately. And it comes from a friend sent some time ago when we where discussing their disability.

“But your disabled, you know what it’s like, you understand…”

Yes, this is true, I am disabled. The fact is I am visually disabled… I am sorry if even I a self-proclaimed advocate for disabled children do not understand what it is like.

I do not understand what it is like not to be able to hear, I do not understand what it is like not being able to see, being totally blind (remember I can see fairly well as legally blind people go).

I understand what it is like to not be able to see across the street, but not what it must be like to sit in a wheelchair and worry about steps and ramps. I don’t know what it’s like not to be able to hold a pencil to write my name, or be the child that understands every thing that is going on around them, but not be able to speak. I don’t know what it is like to need some one to help me get dressed or use the bathroom.

However there are things I do know. I DO know what it’s like to be stared at, even if I can’t see who is doing the staring, trust me, I can feel you. I DO know what it’s like to be laughed at or pointed at… asked questions, how, when, why… can it be fixed… I DO know what it’s like in school, to be left out or left behind and the last one picked… and needing some one else to take you where you need to go.

I don’t know what it’s like to have a child or be the child that has already spent half their life in a hospital, or making countless trips to therapy sessions… or be the child that has their life scheduled around therapy rather then a Little League game.

So, please… forgive me if I am the one doing the staring or asking the questions… I’m only human… You probably have some questions of your own for me, so be polite, ask… we’ll talk … and then get on being friends.

How is therapy going?
Can I have a ride in your wheelchair?
Yes, you can check out my white cane, just don’t use it like a sword!

I understand what it’s like to be disabled like me… not what it’s like to be disabled like you…

In July me and some of my students from the Pottstown Judo Club visited the Montgomery County Association for the Blind (MCAB) Day Camp… A dozen plus blind and visually impaired boys and girls from the ages of 7 to 16 years old engaged in a hands-on demonstration of the Japanese martial art of JUDO lead by Sensei Richard Favinger, Jr. (me) of the Pottstown Judo Club, and assisted by Sensei Scott Rakowski along with Pottstown Judo Club junior students, Paul, Brandon, Nick, Dylan, and Matt…

We had a wonderful time teaching them 2 judo moves each and one hold down. This hands on demo allowed the blind children to throw my students (and they loved every minute of it!) We brought uniforms for every one to try (and feel), and some of Sensei Rich’s Keystone Games medals from past events that are very textured so they can feel them. (They are in the shape of a Keystone)…

They enjoyed hanging with us and telling us many stories of what they also enjoy. Many are members of the Junior Blind Golfers Association, and have participated in Special Olympics under Swimming, Running, and Horseback Riding…

My students had a GREAT time, and the campers asked us when we where coming back! Many also asked where they can signup for judo! Sadly for many they live far away from my club. But I will do my best to find them one local if I can… If not, I may just have to start a judo club for MCAB!

One of the harder things for my young helper students to understand was how they needed to describe every thing they needed to do or tell the other child how to move a foot or hand for placement. But they got the hang of it! (Teaching not so easy eh’ guys?)

I found it a little strange when one of the blind students asked me if I could guide them back to the mat area from the hall… suddenly I was the more sighted of the bunch. I seen one of my other students guide a blind student to the bathroom and patiently wait for him outside, then guide him back to our area. I’m so proud of my students, they acted like perfect role-models!

Special thanks to Mr. Jim Hunt camp director (yellow cap) [who is also blind] from the Montgomery County Association for the Blind… and the Pottstown Judo Club. This demonstration was arranged by Sensei Rich (me)…

The young fellow sitting next to me, is only 7-years-old and has limited light perception – the little dude almost jumped out of his chair when we made the first call for participants! Youngest of the bunch with a triumphant “I DOOOOOO!”… and was first on the mat! – Yea!!! I love it!

Hello my blog friends. I know many of you have been wondering where I am. Well the truth is I didn’t really go any ware; but have been very busy working, taking photos and attending my Orientation and Mobility lessons.

Little League baseball season is over (for me any way) with the conclusion of the Little League PA Section 8 Championships my season is over! Now we just need to catch up on some editing, and filling print orders.

What have I been up to? Baseball of course! I shot ALL 7 GAMES of the PA Section 8 boys championship… with the final game ending in a double-header. Over four days of games and one rain delay, I managed to shoot over 6000 photos. (Unedited count). I also shot the first round of the girl’s softball Section 8 championships.

I had a great time shooting the kids. Some great action and great plays with multiple home runs, some grand slams, and multiple double-plays (which for Little Leaguers are almost impossible because of the 60-foot bases). The kids played with such heart!

Media, PA won Section 8 and advanced to State pool play where they beat all opposition till finally East PA (Media) vs West PA (Moon Township) faced off in the PA Little League State Final… Sadly, it was not to be, Moon Township beat Media, 2 games to 0 in a best of 3 series.

Moon Township Little League now advances to the Little League Baseball Eastern Regional Tournament in Bristol, Connecticut. They will play August 6th to 17th. The Eastern Regional Championship game will be televised on August, 17th, ESPN2 at 8PM EST. Winners of this advance to the Little League World Series!

I have many more updates to tell you all about! Including my Orientation and Mobility progress. So, do check back. Posting will still be a little slow as I now process orders for parents, but more updates to come!

Championship Day is over here… All 5 games where played… And all 5 games where shot.

The day starts early for me, around 9AM arriving at the field about one hour before game time to set up my small display of photos, and rig my remote camera at home plate, and get a few practice shot in myself. The first game started at 10AM under bright a HOT summer sun.

Yes, we actually use a Shop-Vac to suck puddles off the field after a rain delay! Kevin, the League President, demonstrates proper puddle sucking technique.

My day consisted of:

12-hours of non-stop photography

5 Games, 2 Coach Pitch (Minor American), 1 1st Year Kid Pitch (Minor National), and 2 Majors (11-12yo Baseball)

1 Rain Delay

2 Cameras, 1 Remote behind home plate, 1 in-hand

2900+ Photos Shot (unedited count)

1 game called do to lightning

3 hot dogs for the photographer, and countless soda’s and PowerAid’s

200+ fans cheering!

A weeks worth of editing 2900+ photos…

The last game in question was the Boys Majors League Championship Game. A slugfest for sure. With the score changing every inning one-up’ing… plays and steals abound, action at every at bat… All for not, this game was called in the bottom half of the 5th inning 2 outs, runner on 3rd, with a score of 13-13, do to lightning. The umps did there best to try and let them play, but for the safety of the players the field was cleared… only moments later buckests of rain let loose.

So, who won? The rules of course… A very unpopular choice at best… So here is the explanation.

A “Complete Game” (in-the-books) is a game that has at least 4-innings of play. If a game is called do to weather or injury and the inning of play has not finished… the score will revert to the last full played inning… Don’t get it, read it again, slowly…

This means, though our game ended in a tie score of 13-13, because the 5th inning was only half over… the score reverts to the last complete inning (in this case the 4th)… Because 4-innings is considered a “Complete Game“, the game is considered FINAL, and can not be postponed, and finished the next day. That SUCKS!

I give nothing but respect to the boys that played in this game, it was spectacular. And in my view it was a tie, with no winner or looser. But them’s the rules, and sometimes they suck. IF they would have gotten that LAST out, and the score would have remained tied… THEN they could have finished the game the next day!!! But because the Knights of Columbus where ahead by 2 runs in the 4th, they are the “Official” winners.

Still one of the best games I have ever seen!

Championship Day may be over, but my days at the field are not. Little League Baseball and Softball tournaments continue well into July and August. Ending with the Little League World Series, August, 21-30, 2009 in Williamsport, PA!

PLAY BALL!

Many of my blog friends have wondered where I have been for the past few weeks.

Well, I’ve been busy photographing Little League! I’ve shot 25 games (as of this post) and a library of about 5000+ photos, from all levels from Tee Ball to Little League, to Senior League Softball… Playoffs are this week, and Sunday will be a marathon shoot from 10AM ending around 10PM, covering all the league finals, and closing ceremonies! But this is not the end, because tournaments are next ending with the grand stage of the Little League World Series!

So, this may be one of the few posts you see from me for a while again… In any case, photos speak louder then words, so… Here is some of my best shots from 2009… I have hundreds, but here are ten of my favorites…

Though this represents a lot of my portrait type work, I do have many good action shots as well. I may post some of them later… I enjoy the portrait aspect of sports as well as the grit of the play… Capture the people, not just the play…

At the age of two Kyle was diagnosed with Bilateral Retinoblastoma eye cancer, and lost an eye to this, he is also partially sighted in his remaining eye. That doesn’t stop him, at only 7 years old, he golfs better then most adults (and can beat them), they say he could be the next Tiger…

Kyle’s parents started the Through Kyle’s Eyes Foundation to raise funding for Retinoblastoma research by giving to the Eye Tumor Research Program at Will’s Eye Institute in Philadelphia, PA!

So please, check this little dude out! And buy some of his Lograsso gear to support eye tumor research… Visit Kyle’s web site to signup for his newsletter and receive updates.

I’m still around. But busy shooting Little League games at the moment, that is why I have not been blogging.

In the meanwhile, heres the artwork photo I did of my dad. It was printed 16×20 and used at his memorial service.

A combination of Photoshop filters, blending, masks, and layers where used to create the image. Under close inspection of an actual print, it looks more like a colored pencil drawing then a photo.

I came across this article on another photographers blog, but it’s really worth a read. The article is written by photographer, Scott Bourne and talks about how there is a war against photographers.

Who Started The War on Photography?, by Scott Bourne

Several photojournalists were injured or killed documenting the horror of Nine Eleven. Many others risked their lives and their liberty to record the important story of that fateful day. It is the latter that particularly bothers me.

Several freelancers as well as some credentialed photojournalists were jailed for days without charge or trial in the days immediately after September 11… … Read More on Scott’s website…

This war extends to more then just news photographers. It extends to every one wanting to take photos in public. This war on photographers has spilled to schools and almost all major public buildings or events. It has helped mark any one with a camera as a terrorist or a pedophile.

Attorney, Bert Krages, “The Photographer’s Right“:

The right to take photographs in the United States is being challenged more than ever. People are being stopped, harassed, and even intimidated into handing over their personal property simply because they were taking photographs of subjects that made other people uncomfortable. Recent examples have included photographing industrial plants, bridges, buildings, trains, and bus stations. For the most part, attempts to restrict photography are based on misguided fears about the supposed dangers that unrestricted photography presents to society.

You can download Bret’s, The Photographer’s Right Pocket Guide.

As noted in the guide, despite misconceptions to the contrary, the following subjects can almost always be photographed lawfully from public places:

Accident and Fire Scenes

Children

Celebrities

Bridges and Other Infrastructure

Residential and Commercial Buildings

Industrial Facilities and Public Utilities

Transportation Facilities (e.g., Airports, Train Stations)

Criminal Activities

Law Enforcement Officers

No one can ask for your film, memory card or equipment

Law enforcement officers may have the authority to seize film, memory card or equipment, when making an arrest but otherwise must obtain a court order.

You are under no obligation to explain the purpose of your photography unless requested by a law enforcement officer.

Know your rights as a photographer!

Well today marked the youth part of the 2009 Liberty Bell Judo Classic.

Youth weigh-ins where Friday night, and I rode down with Paul and his dad. Seems a waste, but all the kids must weigh in the night before. It just makes things smoother for the day to come. How ever it’s still an hours drive for a weigh in that takes all of 2-minutes. Matt and his mom opted for a hotel room to stay in.

The next day (Saturday), we drove down again, this time to fight. I find out from sensei Fred that poor Matt is THE VERY FIRST MATCH OF THE DAY ON MAT 5! And Paul was the THIRD match on Mat 6! – CRAP! Well, no time to waste. We picked up the kids match cards, and got them to run around a bit.

Opening ceremonies over, and the day begins.

Matt’s up! – Matt’s over… damn… His match lasted about 30-seconds. He lost. Paul’s up… Paul’s down! Double damn… His match was also over in about 30-seconds… Not a good start! This is after all a Double Elimination tournament.

Matt was now match 8, and well… Sorry folks we lost this one. So poor Matt’s day was over in all of about 20-minutes. Paul’s turn for match number two. This time, he nailed the kid for two half-point throws. He won that one. We’re still in this.

Paul’s next match was number 23 on Mat 6. So we went upstairs he got a drink, and we hung with his parents for a while. A few matches before number 23, we headed back down, and he reported in. Paul’s up again… and… just like that… it’s over. Paul lost his 3rd match and thus was eliminated.

I do feel really bad. I was hoping for the guys to win at least a few more. But you must understand, this is a HUGE event. And people come from all over the USA, Canada, and we even had a boy from Africa who was fighting today! WOW!

So the day was over for us well before 11AM. The boys hung out up top, and watched a few more matches. I told them to stay and I snuck off with Matt’s mom to do some shopping with a uniform vender. This is such a big event, and despite the loss, I’m proud of them for simply showing up. Win or loose I already had this planned.

So, what’s a sensei to buy his students? Why, new uniforms of course! But, not just any… You see in judo, the first name called to fight should wear a blue uniform, and the second name called wears white. Normally all students wear white, and we simply use a blue belt to distinguish 1st name and 2nd name for scoring. – High level events like Nationals require the blue uniform.

So… I picked up a size 1 (Paul’s size), and size 3 (Matt’s size), blue single-weave judo uniform for them. But hush now. They don’t know the uniforms are for them! I’ll give the uniforms to them on Monday at class. How cool is that? – I know they will be thrilled. All kids love the blue uniforms! But I’m sure it may make some other students enviable.

But either way, maybe. Just maybe, it will encourage others to fight! Because I would have done the same thing for any student going to this event. Just think if I would have had to buy 14 blue uniforms!!!
