Barcelona, 23rd November 2023 - The International Perfume Foundation is pleased to announce the Finalists of the prestigious New Luxury Awards, unveiled at the Barcelona Perfumery Congress. These awards will embody excellence and innovation in the perfume industry.

Organized by the International Perfume Foundation (IPF), the 4th edition of the New Luxury Awards showcases brands and creators who embrace the new era of luxury, focusing on sustainability and responsibility. This year's finalists have been carefully selected by a panel of international renowned industry experts.

The New Luxury Awards categories include the most environmentally friendly perfumes. Each finalist has stood out for their commitment to a responsible and ethical approach to perfumery following the New Luxury Code and the IPF’s standards for Natural Perfumery.

The Awards, crafted by renowned French designer and architect Pascal Morabito, are true works of art that combine aesthetics with excellence.

Each award embodies the passion, creativity, and elegance that characterize the perfume industry.

Today, the European Union authorized the continued use of Glyphosate, disregarding the crucial issues that threaten our environment and well-being. As concerned citizens, it's time to raise our voices and demand a sustainable future for all.

It's disheartening to witness the EU's lack of consideration for the deteriorating soil quality and the alarming extinction of life within it. The World Health Organization's carcinogen alert and the concerning disappearance of bees should be urgent wake-up calls.

For years, the International Perfume Foundation has been sounding the alarm, advocating for alternatives to protect our planet and its inhabitants. One such solution is the strategic planting of aromatic plants around cultivated areas.

The International Perfume Foundation is excited to announce that the Natural Perfumery Teacher's Academy Courses are now available for anyone looking to become a successful Certified Natural Perfumer from anywhere in the world. For 28 years, IPF has been the only organisation preserving Natural Perfumery and encouraging the French Natural Perfumery Education.

Being Certified by the IPF is a symbol of credibility for consumers who are looking for true natural perfumes.
On all certificates delivered, there is a QR code linked to a page in the IPF website where certified Natural Perfumers have their photos, their brands and contact details. 

 In 2022 we have been very active promoting Natural Perfumery Education and adding new certification courses to the IPF curriculum.
We just launched a new certification for Aromachologists and a Master Natural Perfumer Certificate.

 We also opened an office in Beijing to promote Natural Perfumery in China and help brands in their development.

 This year, we also have been developing our certified natural essential oils supply chain creating an office in Algeria to replant flowers and plants for natural perfumers and educate and certify growers and distillers.

On May 12, 2022, the International Perfume Foundation (IPF) joined hands with Rose Road Group·Youlan International Women’s Institute (R&Y) to open a branch office for IPF in China, authorizing Ms. Li Chen Morisset, the president of R&Y, as IPF Chair for China.

Official annoucement was made at Tous au Parfum, in Paris on July 1

IPF China’s Objectives include certifying Natural Perfumery’s growing Community with new Sustainable Essential Oils Standards (SEOS) in respect with the New Luxury Code, Educating Students, Perfumers, etc. through IPF Natural Perfumery Teacher's Academy, and Defending Values of Quality and Sustainability. In addition, IPF China will be a bridge for global perfume brands and perfumers to enter China, and IPF France will help Chinese designers create their own perfumes and perfume brands.

Tous au Parfum! Conferences Shed Light on Industrie Issues

TOUS AU PARFUM! For its first edition, The International Perfume Foundation's Perfume Celebration in Paris on July 1st was a great success!

We welcomed guests from China, Australia, India, Indonesia, USA, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain

Homages were given to Jean Kerleo, Master Perfumer of Patou and founder of the Osmotheque and to Pierre Dinand, Master Perfume Bottle Designer.

Conferences shed light on industry issues

Jean-Marie Martin-Hattemberg, Perfume Bottles and Cosmetics Expert and Appraiser showed us the most beautiful packaging from the 1920’s followed by a round table about the future of packaging and the need to create beautiful collectible packaging before the industry could sustainably recycle packaging. “To be recycled, all parts (plastic, glass, metal) should be separated, and it is not the case now but waiting for packaging to change brands could create beautiful collectible packaging” said Creezy Courtoy, IPF Founder and Chair.

Regarding the supply chain: “We will need 30 years to relocalize “ said Ivan Borrego Valverde, General Manager at Beauty Cluster, the largest Spanish cluster on cosmetics and perfumes, Veronique Coty, President of the François Coty Association explained how she hardly found the last artisans to create her “Spoturno” perfume bottle. It was very informative as she had all the processes filmed and even learned how to create frosted glass stoppers with this ancient method not involving any plastic material.

Her conclusion is we need urgently to give more work to preserve these artisans, and help them to transmit their heritages to the next generations before they totally disappear.

Chen Li Morisset, President Rose Road Group and Founder of CABIO, the China Organic Beauty Association, confirmed the fact that Chinese are looking for Natural Perfume Brands. “An IPF China bureau in Beijing could support Natural Perfume Brands entering the Chinese Market, we have already signed agreements with the IPF Teacher’s Academy for teaching their curriculum in China”, she said.

Terry Johnson, IPF Vice Chairman and Chairman of the International SEOS (Sustainable Essential Oils Standards) Committee explained the increasing demand for natural perfumes in the USA and 2 years of Committee work creating the SEOS standards for certifying the whole essential oil supply chain.

Regarding the cohabitation of synthetic-natural, Françoise Rapp explained the difference between working with naturals and working with synthetics: “Most synthetic perfumers coming to my Natural Perfumery course have never touch naturals and have no idea, they think it is impossible to work with natural while all perfumers in the past were only using natural” she said.

After sharing views all parties decided to work hand in hand towards a positive future for the industry: the major issue concerning all perfumers: perfume should be removed from the Cosmetic Directive as every year there are some restriction in the use of natural, these modifications in perfume formula are changing the smell of perfumes: consumers don’t recognise their perfumes and brands are spending fortune recomposing and changing all their packaging and labelling.

As perfume is not a cosmetic, we smell perfume, we don’t have to put perfume on the skin and perfumers should be free to use lavender, rose… “The lobby at the EU Commission in favour of the big lab is putting all farmers in danger” said Pascal Morabito. Rachel Binder explained that American Perfumers have much more freedom than European Perfumers and the Natural Market is growing fast. “We need more than this day to continue this discussion and we will do many more meetings and conferences trying to get all actors of this industry involved in the protection of the perfume heritage and the freedom to use natural in Europe ” said Creezy Courtoy, IPF Founder and Chair)

Regarding the future of Selective Distribution, after a visit in the Metaverse, everyone explained the way they were distributing their perfumes. “We are handling our distribution ourselves” said Gilles Thevenin, owner House of Lubin. This is what more and more niche brands are doing and it is an issue for distributors who are losing part of the market.

After a networking lunch, Pierre Dinand signed his book and amazed everyone telling the Opium story. Replying to the audience’s questions, we could have listened to him forever. He was with Jules, his grandson who is working with him and is in admiration for his grandfather “I will never stop honoring him and I hope to become one day as good as him,” he said.

Shaneela Rowah Al-Qamar, expert in Oriental Perfumes and Traditions talked about the importance of preserving oud for the GCC countries and what was done by the Zayed Foundation.

Magali Quenet, expert in sourcing raw material, shared a passion for oud fumigation.

“Education is the most important tool, and so we need to educate growers and harvesters which is part of our program at the Teacher’s Academy,” said Creezy Courtoy. Patrick Worms, President EURAF the European Agroforestry Federation confirmed the importance of protecting farmers to preserve the heritage while educating them and teaching them good practices.

Hamdane Allalou, President PPAM Essential Oils Algeria and most recently Chairman IPF Algeria told us the importance of perfume and medicinal plants in the Algerian heritage and the plan to have IPF help development in the region for replanting, educating and certifying the raw material supply chain.

Andrej Babicky, Certified Natural Perfumer and expert in raw material extraction explained various ancient methods like enfleurage and maceration, his curriculum at the IPF Teacher’s Academy. This was very well documented and afterward Rachel Binder, Certified Natural Perfumer and Sommelier told us the secret of implementing perfumes with these methods. “There is an important link to make between the fruits you eat and the maceration you can make with them to be used afterwards in perfumes, my experience as a sommelier lead me to understand this,” she said.

Despite the enormous challenges facing us, IPF had an outstanding year of accomplishment in 2021. IPF fulfilled its mission in preserving the heritage, educating and improving the academic environment within the worldwide perfume industry to the highest standards.

The second edition of the New Luxury Awards for Sustainable Perfumes and Sustainable Packaging, the IPF’s annual recognition of excellence was an unforgettable online experience thanks to Beauty Cluster Barcelona technology, La Laura Paris performances and the 2020 New Luxury Awards Winner's Talent .

2021 marked a milestone in IPF's Certification Program with the decision to certify using Sustainable Essential Oil Standards (SEOS.)

These improved standards will establish a solid foundation within the Natural Essences Community to provide consumers with trust and confidence in the products they buy.

IPF’s Natural Perfumery Teacher’s Academy launched a new certified online school program in 2021. Thanks to the many teachers and experts involved, in 4 months time, we could propose courses in Natural Perfumery, Natural Aromatherapy, Natural Skin Care, Olfaction Training, Perfumotherapy, World Perfume History MasterClass, Natural Raw Material Extraction Methods, Sustainable Oud MasterClass, Business and Marketing in the Essential Oil Environment.

The Teacher's Academy also has teachers in many languages: French, English, Arabic, Italian and will offer more languages and more courses in the coming year.

Sunday Larson, IPF USA Vice Chair Arizona

We are very pleased and honoured to announce the nomination of SUNDAY LARSON as Vice Chair for Arizona (USA).

Sunday Larson lives in Sedona, Arizona, a red rock wonderland where the muse never sleeps. She is a Certified Natural Perfumer and Olfaction Trainer and she considers all aspects of aroma, perfume, and olfaction to be her spiritual practice.

She holds a degree from the University of Utah in Women’s Studies and the Semiotics of Women’s Literature and Art History. Sunday studied alchemy informally for several years with Dr. Albert Riedel, founder of the Paracelsus Research Society.

She worked for two years as a designer in the Tiffany and Company contract department, where her designs captured the attention of an international clientele.

She later developed an edenesque residential community where the wild and tame gardens were partially based on the Rudolf Steiner BioDynamic method. This property was the setting for her installation art works: Composting a Life, The Birthing, To Dine For, She Who Changes and The Nesting.

She recently retired as a book content editor. She is writing a perfume-based novel, with an exciting adjunct project of developing a Smellscape of Sedona, a tale of seed to scent told through the voices of Pommey Starr and her great-grandmother Flora Bee, with the hopes of adding another dimension to how visitors view and interpret our red rock paradise.

Sunday is looking forward to working with the International Perfume Foundation to bring more awareness to the magical journey that began 160 million years ago with an event called the Big Bloom, when the first flowers made the world we know possible, including us.

Jan Kusmirek has been working with aromatic and botanical extracts for some 40 years. He qualified in Naturopathy and later Herbal Medicine following which, Aromatherapy.

In practice he specialised in skincare and is now best described as an aromacosmetologist. He has acted as creative consultant to numerous major consumer brands including LVMH, Elemis and in extraction process Alban Muller.

With a lifelong interest in horticulture and a strong belief in organic agriculture he became Marketing Manager at the Soil Association bringing the symbol scheme of organic standards to the cosmetic field.

The first part of his business life was spent in the world of physics, high vacuum engineering and the developing world of plastics technology.

For the past number of years his key interest lies in microbiology and the unity of sensory perception with emphasis on olfaction.

Françoise Rapp has 25 years’ experience in the natural skincare and perfumery sector, working with luxury spas and a confidential clientele to create beautiful, bespoke fragrances. She is a renowned French certified natural perfumer, natural aromatherapist and naturopath, with a strong focus on healing emotions and balancing energies through the subtle power of scent. Françoise Rapp is the founder of Institut Français d’Aromathérapie et de Parfumerie Naturelle which has joined forces with International Perfume Foundation to develop educational programs.

She spent more than 10 years in California in the 1990s, where she honed her trade and taught the principles of holistic healing, aromatherapy and natural perfumery. Françoise Rapp is an experienced massage therapist, spa therapist and quantum healer, tutored by the world-renowned alternative medicine advocate, Deepak Chopra.

Now based in Provence, France, she enjoys being close to the natural raw materials she uses to create her scents. Immersing herself in nature allows her to study its contributions to our overall wellbeing and uphold her ecological values.

As well as her training and practical work, Françoise Rapp is an accomplished author and a regular health & wellness contributor for national magazines such as Voici, ELLE, Santé Magazine and Top Santé. She is the lead instructor at Ecole Supérieure du Parfum in Paris and Grasse, training perfumers in natural cosmetics & vegetal biology as well as leading the cursus of phytotherapy and aromatherapy.

Françoise Rapp is the Teacher's Academy's lead instructor for natural perfumery and natural aromatherapy. She has also participated with IPF in international conferences.

ANDREJ BABICKY Chair Italy

He was born in a small town in Slovakia where he first came into contact with the power of plants through his grandmother and mother.

After studying Theatre Criticism and Philosophy (which brought him to Italy) he worked in the world of artistic perfumery as Store Manager, Brand Manager and Buyer.

He studied natural perfumery at Natural Perfume Academy and is Certified as a Natural Perfumer and Certified Olfaction Trainer by the International Perfume Foundation.

He is also Academician, Member and Teacher at the Teacher's Academy. In addition to natural perfumery, he is interested in the sense of smell, the history of perfumery and he is impassioned by the extraction methods of raw materials and gardening.

There are many paths that led Rachel to natural perfume. Rachel is a sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers, a supertaster, and a natural wine educator for Future Food Institute.

She also worked for Earthship Productions meeting with environmental innovators on solutions to free us from the use of petrochemicals.

She is finishing her Soil Advocacy training with Kiss The Ground and is always exploring different ways to hand extract whole ingredients for perfume. She uses the principles of microbiology not petrochemistry to create and age perfume and aromatic materials.

She launched Pomare's Stolen Perfume in 2015, named after Queen Pomare IV of Tahiti in memory of how hard she fought for an independent Tahiti - and for all of the stolen people, lands and flowers.

This past year has been a dream come true- winning the Art and Olfaction Aftel Award for Handmade Perfumery, followed by the International Perfume Foundation’s New Luxury Awards - Sustainable Brand of the Year, as well as an unprecedented 16 medals from Artisan Perfume Awards through Taste TV for 2021.

Ancient Egyptians considered the sense of smell far more important than sight or even the ability to think.

For them, the sense of smell was considered the most important sense. They believed that the sense of smell and ability to detect odours was the most important of our sensory abilities.

Each day, we breathe about 23,040 times and move around 438 cubic feet of air. It takes us about five seconds to breathe — two seconds to inhale and three seconds to exhale — and, in that time, molecules of odour flood through our systems. Inhaling and exhaling, we smell odours. Smells coat us, swirl around us, enter our bodies, and emanate from us. We live in a constant wash of them but to benefit from them we need to train our olfactory sense and to make sure that everything we breathe is good for us.

Why is Olfaction Training so important?

How many times a day do we take the time to consciously smell the scents surrounding us? Fragrances, being very ephemeral, are today very quickly overwhelmed by sound and visual inputs. The sense of smell, ancestrally the first sense, has become the last sense we use.

The olfactory sense, one of the first senses developed in newborns as an instinctive sense, has been considered as too animal-like and nearly cast off by our society. In our past environment sight prevailed over the other senses.

As an anthropologist, Creezy Courtoy has been studying olfaction and gorillas for years: “Gorillas know because they use 100% of their olfactory sense not only to choose their food but also to find plants for healing themselves.”

Humans have mostly lost a large percentage of this sense long before COVID-19. It is only now people realise how important olfaction is for their wellbeing. To be healthy, we need the balance of each of our senses.

When you breathe, you give molecules direct access to your body.

To understand the benefits of olfaction, it is important to understand also the dangers of olfaction. If you want to restore your olfactory sense after Covid 19, avoid using synthetic aromas.

If we consider the importance of olfaction and its positive benefits when using natural materials, we should also consider avoiding the opposite effects: the dangers of breathing synthetic substances. If certain cocktails of molecules are toxic, others have a completely beneficial action on human health.

If a product is natural in its composition, like a rose, where all molecules join in an effort to make a natural rose scent, if you replace the natural scent with a cheaper, synthetic rose scent, you get far fewer scent molecules and also you can never be certain of what inhalation of these substances could do to your body.

When you breathe, you give these molecules direct access to your body. We already know the power and properties of each plant. Traditional medicine and botanical studies have documented these criteria for millennia*.

Become an Olfaction Teacher

In following an 8 weeks Olfaction Training course online given by Creezy Courtoy, Certified Teacher, Academician and Member of the Teacher’s Academy.

“My goal here is to give the right information about olfaction and the way to restore olfaction using the right material. To understand the benefits of olfaction, it is important to understand also the dangers of olfaction. I saw that many teachers don’t have this education. *Since the ages of times past, in every region of the world, people have been using plants for therapy. They added plants to their food and drinks, and they used them to make perfumes and cosmetics knowing the beneficial effects of each of them. This precious and ancestral knowledge has been transmitted from generation to generation. We can find it in cuneiform writings on Sumerian tablets around 1700BC. Prescriptions were found in the “Ebers Papyrus” dated 1552 BC, in Dioscorides “Materia Medica” dated 78 AD, in the “Codex Aniciae Julianae” dated 512 AD, and later in Paracelse and Leonard Fuchs works (XVIth century).

New Luxury Awards revealed an increasing numbers of natural perfumers and brands and an urgent need to innovate packaging to lead the perfume industry towards sustainability.

The New Luxury Awards 2020 acknowledged last night the 2020 sustainable perfumes and sustainable packaging following the New Luxury Code.

Pierre Dinand and Catherine Disdet chaired the Jury.

The Awards were announced online in a ceremony entertained by the very talented @Lalauraparis, artist and IPF Youth Ambassador.

The International Perfume Foundation in partnership with Beauty Cluster and Parfum Plus Magazine organised the event online.

Nominees came from everywhere in the world, showing that Natural Perfumery is growing worldwide.

The winners for sustainable perfumes are:

In the student category: Vedrana Perhoc from Croatia with a perfume called Son Gant de Cuir.

In the graduate category: Omar Al Qattan from Kuwait with a perfume called Cave and MD Abdullah Al Roman from Malaysia with a perfume called Oriental Queen.

In the perfumer category: Danica-Lea Larcombe from Perth, Australia with a perfume called Lilly Pilly.

In the brand category: Pomare’s Stolen Perfumes from Venice, California with a perfume called Piano Tuner.

In the supplier category: Teal Bio from California, a company doing bio-plastics based on banana peels and micro-organisms.

In the brand category: No nominees

Anu Kemppinen, a student from United Kingdom, reminded everyone that perfume bottles put on the market are only recyclable if each part of the metal, glass or bio-plastic can be separated.

“You are the new generation of perfumers, the new generation of brands and the new generation of suppliers.

You are leading the change we need in this world, bringing back nature to our lives and showing it is important to come back to what is truly luxury.

What will be perfume in 2025? With the growing demand for natural products and for perfume packaging respecting the environment, the animal world and consumers’ wellbeing, perfume brands are adapting to satisfy consumer’s requests.

The International Perfume Foundation in partnership with Beauty Cluster Barcelona and ParfumPlus announced the New Luxury Awards 2020.

For this second edition, IPF New Luxury Awards will be given to perfume brands, perfumers, designers or packaging engineers who have been creating or putting on the market sustainable perfume or packaging following the New Luxury Code during the year 2020. The competition is also open to students in packaging and perfumery.

The objective is to stimulate creativity in perfume and packaging in adopting the New Luxury Code as sustainability standards and in showing to the world who in the perfume industry truly care with Authenticity, Integrity and Transparency about the environment, the animal world and consumers’ wellbeing.

Nominations will be announced on January 25-2021

Winners will be announced during the online Award Ceremony on February 12-2021.

Kristin Chen - Launch of Tanshamei Natural Perfume Academy in Taipei

On August 6th 2020, the International Perfume Foundation has certified the first Natural Perfumery School in Asia: Tanshamei Natural Perfume Academy, in Taipei (Taiwan).

Kristin Chen, IPF Certified Natural Perfumer and Head Teacher explained the meaning of the school logo:

C11 is to convey an energy with the power to clean the earth, to love the earth and to balance the earth via our sense of smell for mankind to revert to a healthy lifestyle.

The acronym C is from the word “clean”; while the number of 11 represents the power of balance. Using C11’s natural perfumery enables the balance of the energy of the earth as well as the balance of our mind, body and soul.

During the event Kristen presented the artwork entitled “Cry of the Polar Bear”. It is a soft sculpture artwork created by Contemporary Artist, Lin, Jing-Long.

"The adorable and lively Polar Bear sitting on the tip of the iceberg catches everyone’s immediate attention; the expression of his eyes yearning for the disappearing ice mountains far away is heart-wrenching. This is the mission of C11 and also everybody’s mission" said Ms Chen.

Tanshamei Academy will work with IPF hand-in-hand to shoulder the responsibility to promote for a better environment by the means of natural perfumery. Two follow-up actions will take place: 1^st, the education of natural perfumery will be established in Taiwan. Tanshamei Academy will not only educate natural perfumers but also educate everyone to pay attention to our senses and awaken our minds. Second, Tashamei Academy has already initiated commercial projects for hotels and other spaces. By using natural perfumery as the basic concept, the living examples of these projects are the best demonstration of how natural perfumery can be integrated to our lives.

The New Luxury Awards 2019 for Sustainable Perfumes and Packaging took place at the PCD Talk in Paris on January 30th after an important conference on The Future of Packaging.

The major problem of many brands in term of packaging is that pumps and bottles cannot be separated and recycled. Plastic, glass, metal.... have to be separable to be recyclable. The Winner for sustainable packaging: Serge Lutens. For more than 15 years he had the vision to separate the plastic pump from the glass bottle to allow them to be recyclable. The bottle is sold with a screw cap for transportation and a screw pump.

Our objective is to stimulate creativity in perfume and packaging in adopting the New Luxury Code as sustainability standards for Authenticity, Integrity and Transparency.

This competition has also for objective to create a link between new perfumers, new designers, and students in perfumery and students in packaging.

Jury

The jury is composed by Academicians, Members of the Teacher’s Academy, experts and world renowned influencers from the perfume and packaging industry who will first choose up to 10 entries to be shortlisted.

Competition opened to:

- Perfumers following the standards of the International Perfume Foundation

- Graduates of a Perfumery Schools

- Students in Perfumery

- Designers in Packaging/ Packing

- Engineers in Packaging / Packing

- Graduates of a Packaging and Packing Schools

- Students in Packaging/Packing

Rules and Key factors

Creating a Perfume, Packaging or Packing following the New Luxury Code.

For Perfume

Respect the standards of the International Perfume Foundation for Certification. http://perfumefoundation.org/natural-perfumery

Creating a perfume with a soul and a story to tell.

For Packaging

- Creating Packaging that no one wants to throw away.

- Creating Packaging with a soul and a story to tell.

- Avoiding using plastics or non-recyclable material.

- Avoiding mixing materials if they cannot be easily separate for recycling.

- Ergonomics / Functionality (the package should be easy to store, hold, open and close)

- Using non-toxic ink for printing.

-All designs presented will have to be new, not having been commercialized or published prior to the date of the contest.

- The use of existing logo is not permitted except if your work is associated with the work of a perfumer also competing. Understanding that the competition is open to perfumers only, not to the brands.

For Packing

Product protection (package protects the product throughout the logistics chain).

Sustainability (use of renewable and biodegradable materials, material efficiency, material savings, recyclability, reusability).

SUBMISSIONS SPECIFICATIONS

All submissions must be made by post mail and must contain:

- Description (min. 50 words) outlining the inspiration and benefits of the concept.

- The competition languages are English and French.

For Designers and Engineers:

- Up to 6 photos/illustrations on white background.

Participants can submit the following material (optional):

- 3D visuals

- Creative video (max. 30 MB) presenting the concept.

For Perfumer:

- Up to 6 sample vials of perfume

- Description and criteria of the perfume

- List of raw material used

Open for registration: October 9-2019

Closing registration: November 10-2019

Open for submission: January 1-2020

Closing submission: January 15-2020

Creezy Courtoyis an historian and anthropologist specializing in perfume.

She is also Founder and Chair of the non-profit International Perfume Foundation whose mission is: education, protection and preservation of the important perfume heritage.

For her project THE PERFUME ROADS, Creezy Courtoy received UNESCO’s high patronage.

The International Perfume Foundation is pleased to announce its support of celebrating the 15th edition of the PCD show in Paris opening January 30th.

As the first leading packaging event of the year, it is no doubt the European professional reference in terms of packaging innovations. This year, Made in France and eco-conception will be honored.
