7. Chasing Slow - I love this book. I bought it in the digital edition as part of my simplifying process, but I love holding books in my hand, and this is one I wish I had a physical copy of.

8. Digital Subscription to Simplify Magazine - some of my favourite bloggers on the topic of simplifying have created this quarterly digital magazine. I love when a new edition arrives and I can make some time to curl up with a cup of tea to read it.

9. Beeswax Candles - I'm currently burning these.

10. Shop local and find a beautiful naturally lip balm or soaps - I love Tval Skincare and East Coat Glow lip balms, both locally made.

Handmade Marathon: Hereness Thereness

(+) Tell us about your business

I make children's toys out of fabric that's been printed with my own illustrations. Wee fabric houses, hand puppets, finger puppets, and I've just recently finished writing and illustrating my first children's book, about a globe-trotting Gnome's adventures through Southeast Asia.

(+) How did you get started?

About 5 years ago, I left my job as a graphic designer, and my husband took a sabbatical from his job, and we backpacked around Asia for 7 months. I had been thinking about starting an Etsy shop for a while, and with the time away, I was able to solidify what it was I wanted to do and make. When I got back, I began sewing, drawing, prototyping, and after a couple of months was able to open my shop and start doing craft shows.

(+) The gal behind the business - Tell us about yourself, how do you spend your Saturday mornings, a little glimpse into your life, your family etc.

Hi! I'm Amberlea, a maker/graphic designer/yoga teacher, living in Ottawa with my husband (my highschool sweetheart; this year we're celebrating 20 years together!), our 3-year-old son, and our two cats.

I've been home with my son since he was born, and working on my Etsy shop and doing freelance graphic design in my "spare" time (or, rather, during naptimes, though naptimes seem to be something of the past, lately!)

Summers in Ottawa are awesome, and Saturday mornings we often bike to the farmer's market, to the river for a swim, or to a park. Or sometimes my husband will run errands with our son, and give me a bit of quiet time to get caught up on work.

(+) What inspires you? Where does your creativity come from?

Anywhere and everywhere.

It could be a photo from an ad, or a diagram at the dentist's office, or the way the light filters through the trees during golden hour, or the raindrops on kale in the garden — literally anything — often I'll get a spark of an idea when I mis-see something; like when I see a face in the texture of a wall, or a landscape in the grain of a floorboard, (or the classic "that cloud looks like a bunny jumping over a tree!").

My mind will start running with the tiniest thread of an idea; it's actually a frustrating problem to have so many ideas, and not have the time to follow all of them through! I try to collect as many of these random strands of thought in my sketchbook, to save them until they become big and loud enough that I HAVE to do something about it :)

(+) What's one thing you would like to improve about your business?

Marketing. Spend some effort to direct traffic to my Etsy shop — with seasonal craft shows and word of mouth, my shop has been maintaining enough traffic as I can handle with my limited time. But now with my son getting older and more independent (and starting part-time preschool in the fall!), I want to start ramping things up again.

(+) What is the best gift you have ever given or received?

While my husband and I were traveling, I saw a beautiful carved wooden buddha statue at a shop in Tegallalang, Bali, but the store was closed. We couldn't find the store owner, so I just decided it wasn't meant to be. The next day we were set to leave for Java, and while I was at a yoga class, my husband rented a moto, drove back to the shop, which was still closed, found someone to call the owner, waited for the owner to come, and managed to buy the statue and get back before I did. And then he kept it hidden in his own backpack for two weeks until my birthday, and then gave it to me. I cried, quite a bit :). I was so touched. And you have to understand this is not a tiny statue, it's fairly large, not something easy to carry around in a backpack!

(+) How do you celebrate special occasions?

With friends. We don't host many parties, but we like to have friends over for birthdays and Thanksgiving. For birthdays there's a homemade cake (or sometimes someone will bring some beautiful treats from one of the many amazing bakeries in town), and lots of food, and if it's warm weather, we'll hang out on our back deck, where there's lots of space for the littles to run around.

(+) What do you do when you make time for yourself (you and only you)

Yoga. Run. Read. Journal. Quilt. Movies and popcorn at home with popcorn after the kiddo's in bed. Ah, alone time. It doesn't happen often, but I do love it when it does!

Does it feel as elusive to you as it does to me?

I've spent a lot of time of the past year trying to create more balance and simplicity in my life, and yet....somehow another Summer is coming to a close and it feel like it went by all too fast.

How is it that I'm getting my little NJ, my firstborn ready for Grade 1 as she sings "Despacito" at the top of her lungs in the car?

How is it that even when I'm relaxing

If I've learned anything about time, it's that some of my favourite time (and memories) is with people I love and care about. I will spend (almost) any amount of money for a group trip with my girlfriends (and was very fortunate to do just that this Summer as we celebrated a wedding together).

I don't care (much) about new purses and jewelry or having the latest "whatever" from a certain brand. I care about quality and making memories.

So the next time you need a special gift for your spouse, partner, girlfriends, or family, think about a little retreat or getaway to make MEMORIES.

Those are the moments of time that count the most.

Do you love Airbnb as much as I do?

If you've never experienced an Airbnb I highly recommend checking it out, you can save $50 off your first stay. A few tips:

always search using "entire home/apartment" if you want to have rental space to yourself (Airbnb also has a "private room" option where you can stay in someone's home)
always read reviews and ratings and choose spaces that have recently been well-reviewed
do your research - check maps to make sure you know the exact area where the home is located.

Handmade Marathon: Antisewcial

Editor's Note: A few weeks ago I spotted a new-to-me local business and I knew it would be the perfect way to jump back into the Handmade Marathon series! Thanks to Megan from Ragmaw (who you might remember from this Handmade Marathon feature a few years ago) for the introduction.

Tell us about your business

Hi! I’m Carolyn, owner and solo sewist of Antisewcial’s handmade natural fashion in Newfoundland. I am a mom of two active boys and a proud RCMP spouse. My goal in life is to do more of what makes me happy and surround myself with people, places and things who bring in the light and spark my creativity.

How did you get started?

After living on Vancouver Island in British Columbia for 8 years, I fell in love with everything inspired by nature and handmade. My favourite pastime with my family was (and still is!) visiting local markets and finding unique handmade treasures that you can feel were made with love.

I actually remember the first time I purchased the cutest pair of organic pants for my 1st born. It was an emergency purchase after my little one had their very first public *accident* in their pants! Haha! First of many to come, these perfect little pants are still in #2’s closet and look brand new. The quality of these handmade pants couldn’t even come close to anything else I had owned in the past. The material is divine and you can feel the intention and love behind them.

Ethical, sustainable and handmade, you complete me!

What inspires you? Where does your creativity come from?

Over time, my life became focused less on consumption and more on simple, clean living. When my family and I moved back home to Newfoundland it was a fresh start and we make our consumer purchases conscious ones.

I dove in to create a space in my home, and my life, that would inspire me to do more of what I love, sewing and creating natural fashion. In an era surrounded by disposable fast fashion it is difficult to find great, simple, ethically-made basics, especially for children, that are not heavily branded from head to toe. I love putting a fun twist on everyday cozy clothes and creating comfortable clothing that kids want to wear. All of the clothing that I design is made from bamboo or organic cotton fabric and made for Newfoundland’s unpredictable weather.

My goal for Antisewcial is not to outfit as many people as possible or make as much money as possible (sorry darling husband!) but to continue my journey doing what I love and hopefully inspire others to support the local makers out there in our community. I sew because it makes me happy and I hope it makes you happy as well!

What's one thing you would like to improve about your business?

Something I would like to improve about Antisewcial is time! I think we are all looking for a little more time in our day to get it all done. Working at home with two small pre-school aged children, and a husband who works away, definitely has its challenges. I would like more time to sew and create and even add in some of my "Blow Me Down" Hoodies for adults, but that is not my reality right now. My time will come, I know it will! When it does, I will have more time for Antisewcial, but I bet I will be a sappy mess not having those two little ones pulling at my measuring tapes, pins and fabric scraps.

What is the best gift you have ever given or received?

One of the best gifts I have ever received was after my little boy, Tobin, was born. My co-workers got together and they each took a week to make my family meals as I recovered. Each week one person dropped off their homemade meals and even included some for the freezer. It was so thoughtful and so incredibly helpful. We really didn’t need to worry about meals for over a month. I was living very far away from family and it made us feel so loved and cared for.

What do you do when you make time for yourself (you and only you)

Making time for myself is a difficult one for me and I could use some help in that department. I recognize the need for taking time out but I seldom make it happen. Time for myself these days is usually spent sewing or doing absolutely NOTHING when my children go to bed.

Thoughtful Gifting

Hello, June 2017.
It has been over a year since I have written and shared here.

I started The Petit Cadeau blog so that I could share ideas with you that brought me JOY, and for a little while over the past year, that joy was missing. I didn't mean to take such a long break away from here (good intentions, right?) but I knew that the past year would be a "year of transitions" - going back full time to my 9-5 job, and balancing 2 small kids & family along with a small business, so I decided to focus my limited energy on Petit Mail for a while.

Honestly, over the past year, I haven't focused much on thoughtful gifting OR my creative side. It has sort of been a year of survival, but I finally feel like I'm finding the balance again, and I have missed writing, missed creating, missed sharing ideas here, with you.

I'm already planning posts and new #handmademarathon features for the coming months.

I feel excited, and inspired again. I hope you'll continue on this journey of handmade, simple, unique and thoughtful with me.

As I spend 34 years walking along this little journey called life, the thing that is most important to me is spending time with the people that I care about. and I don't get nearly enough of that.

How To Simplify Gifting with a "Signature Gift"

It's no secret that I've been on a bit of a journey to simplify things in my life. Gifting can sometimes feel....stressful...if you let it.

Lately the idea of having a "signature gift" has been really appealing to me. Growing up, a cousin always sent a holiday package with a few surprises, but always her hand-rolled beeswax candles. Those were her signature gift, and every year I looked forward to that delightful beeswax smell wrapped up in a brown paper package.

What is a signature gift?

To me, a signature gift is a gift that you give to everyone for the same occasion. It simplifies the process of thinking about gifts, while still being thoughtful.

There are many possibilities for signature gifts, but here are some that I find inspirational for a variety of gifting occasions.

(+) Simple DIY flower bouquets - collect small, unique or vintage vases, then put together simple bouquets of in-season flowers when you need a gift.

(+) DIY surprise envelope books (for gift cards or small objects)

(+) A book that you love and know others will love as well. I frequently purchase books in multiples and gift them to friends. My caveat is that I only gift books to fellow readers.

(+) For kids, a snail mail subscription like Petit Mail

(+) A Homemade Breakfast Basket

(+) A loaf of homemade bread wrapped in parchment and twine

Every now and then, I like to play around with a themed gift. I had been thinking about a breakfast-themed gift basket for a while, so I decided to call this one the "Sunday Morning" gift basket, complete with a handmade pennant flag.

Christmas Eve Box

We have a lot of special family traditions in our home - like our Christmas Eve Box.

Our box is actually a basket (for now) and I made these Christmas Eve pennant flags with red card stock, then heat embossed my handwriting in white (because I love a little heat embossing!)

Our Christmas Eve box items are not elaborate - a new pair of Christmas pyjamas and a new book to read at bedtime on Christmas Eve. I bought this particular book, a Christmas Tale about the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree several years ago when we were in New York and have been saving it. Next year's book will probably be The Polar Express.

When the kids are older, we will probably add some special handmade mugs and hot chocolate.

I have travelled the world, and one of my absolute favourite experiences of all time remains right here at home - Lighthouse Picnics or on Facebook. There is something oh-so-magical about sitting on a hillside, overlooking the ocean on a sunny Newfoundland day with an artisan picnic. In my opinion, you just can't go wrong with this as a gift. The Christmas Countdown Calendar

Growing up, we always celebrated the month of December with an advent calendar. I had a beautiful pop-up scene calendar, with little doors and windows to open each day. There was no chocolate involved with this particular advent calendar, and we used it again and again, all throughout my childhood.

Most kids love the chocolate part of an advent calendar, but I imagined something more.

I imagined counting down the days with thoughtful little gifts, in beautiful heirloom bags that could be used year after year, and even passed down through generations.

I imagined something that would bring families together through a simple + thoughtful tradition.

This isn't an advent calendar, but these countdown calendars can be used in the five days leading up to Christmas, or once a week in the five weeks leading up to Christmas.

Each numbered bag can be filled with a treat or surprise.
Handmade ornaments.
Simple gifts.

Each bag can hold a card announcing a special family activity for that day.

I love the idea of a couple using the Christmas Countdown Calendar as part of their holiday tradition. Something to invest in now, and can also be shared if your family grows in the future. Or, continue to use it as something just for you, keeping something special for yourselves during the busy holiday season.

Minimalism and The Ultimate Gift

In my early 20's I lived in Europe

I cooked full meals on one hotplate (for real)

I rode a bicycle everywhere (or took the train to other regions or countries on the weekend)

I bought simple, fresh ingredients at the local market

I lived in a very tiny space.

Looking back, I don't ever remember thinking - "I want more"

Life was an adventure. There was so much to see, so much to explore.

Things moved at a different pace. I moved at a different pace.

Of course, that was a different season of my life.

There weren't so many commitments, and I didn't have two very small children.

Lately I've been reading articles almost daily about minimalism and simplifying and I've been thinking about it. a lot.

I want my children to have experiences.

I want them to see the world with their own eyes.

I want to experience that with them.

That, for me, would be the ultimate gift to them.

So, I'm on a journey, of sorts. A journey toward decluttering some of things in my life, and I have to tell you, it has been kind of amazing so far.

Let's get one thing clear. I'm not giving it all up to live in a hut in the woods.

(I still like my Starbucks, thankyouverymuch)

My version of minimalism is largely about a home without clutter, but filled with things we love, about spending quality time with family and friends, and about consciously cutting back on things that we really do not need, so that we can save for that ultimate gift of travel.

I'm also giving more gifts with minimalism in mind.

I'm sitting down to write letters to friends for their birthdays, instead of sending gifts.

We are taking our 5 year old niece to see a local theatre production of The Little Mermaid as her birthday gift instead of a toy.

We are adopting a "Something You Want, Something You Need, Something to Wear, Something to Read" gift practice for our kids this holiday season.

Keeping things simple, yet meaningful.

Why I Buy Handmade

Why Buy Handmade?

It's no secret that I love to buy handmade. It's part of the reason why I started the Handmade Marathon series, to bring more attention to businesses making and selling beautiful handmade products.

I still shop in big-box stores sometimes, but more and more I am choosing to support handmade business, or small local, or independent stores.

Following the trend of slow food, I've been seeing more about slow fashion, and slow blogging (here and here) to name a few.

Can I coin a new phrase?
For me, buying handmade is slow gifting. It's quiet and thoughtful. It's about making a conscious choice for gifts. It's about making gifts with love or purchasing something made with care by hand. It's an energy.

Here are some other reasons why I'm choosing handmade

I LOVE to DIY, but...
I am a creative at heart. I love to make gifts and homemade cards when I can.
but.
My reality has changed a lot in the past few years. I work full-time, I am a mom of two, I operate The Petit Cadeau blog and shop, I'm passionately running my business Petit Mail, and I'm learning that despite my best intentions, I just do not have the time to make everything myself. Enter buying handmade. I get a thoughtful, unique gift. I support a small business. It honestly makes me really, really happy.

Quality over Quantity
It comes back to my personal choices. I can buy my daughter 5 plastic toys, or 2 lovely handmade items. Handmade doesn't always mean expensive (but you should be paying a fair cost for the time and effort that goes into making a product). There are so many beautiful items available online and in local shops.

Uniqueness
There are so many amazing, unique handmade products that you can never find in the "mass-produced" aisle. You can often request customized, or personalized versions of products, or avail of one-of-a-kind products. There are options for everyone.

5 Ways to Gift Experiences

This year, I've been thinking and reading a lot about minimalism. There's no perfect way to do this, but I've slowly been taking steps to clear clutter from our home (no easy task with two small kids) and simplify things. Which, for me, naturally leads to thinking about gifting.

Most of us have a lot of "stuff, so how can we gift meaningfully without adding to all of that clutter.

Here are 5 ways to gift experiences - a perfect way to honour my philosophy of slow gifting.

Gift Your Skills

You might be surprised at how much others might appreciate a gift of your unique skills. This might be something related to your career work, or something related to a hobby.

If someone always compliments you on your photos, offer to take some family photos and choose the best ones to print. Tania from ManusMade gifted her mother with some time to help her declutter a room in her house. Maker Jessica Vellenga has been offering the gift of mending and repairing fabric items like heirloom table cloths and clothing.

Gift Online Classes

An online class might just be the perfect gift for a lifelong learner or creative in your life. If you dig a little, you can find some really interesting options.

Know someone who loves to bake? Alison's Cookie Party might be a great gift option.

For the artist or aspiring artist, blogger and artist Alisa Burke offers a variety of well-priced online classes for gifting (p.s. I really want to visit the Oregon Coast because of Alisa's blog)

Thrive offers online art classes specifically for kids.
Jean of the Artful Parent wrote about taking online art classes with kids.

For an aspiring photographer or creative, I highly recommend Susannah Conway's Photo Meditations class (Journal Your Life is also on my wish list).

Gift Subscriptions

In my opinion, there is nothing much better than something that comes in the mail once a month. There are so many different subscription options out there (because it makes a great gift)

Think creatively about subscriptions, like Janelle Hardy's painted Letters from Vancouver Island or Paris Letters (have you read the book?)

For paper lovers, Q&A Letterbox might be a lovely option.

For young kids, Petit Mail story card subscriptions are a great option.

Gift From Your Kitchen

This could mean homemade cookies, but I also have some other ideas.

For busy parents, put together several freezer meals, package and label. Your gift can go straight into the freezer and they will be forever appreciative (I speak from experience).

Bake and deliver muffins or homemade bread to your recipient a few times a year. Give your recipient a card to let them know what flavours they can expect and when (this helps you stay on track with your gift - don't forget to put the dates in your calendar!)

Gift a homemade theme, like breakfast - include pancake mix, granola (I like this recipe) and Canadian maple syrup.

Gift by Snail Mail

If you have a friend who loves to send mail, why not help them out. Shop local markets for a variety of handmade cards (birthday, holiday, generic) and package them up beautifully with some stamps for mailing. Or, if you are creative, make your own card sets and do the same.

Put together a beautiful package to send by mail. It doesn't have to be complicated. Sit down and write a personalized letter. Wrap up and add some small gifts - gift cards might be a great option for someone who lives far away. If you need some inspiration, my Make it Pretty Pinterest board is a great place to start.

Gifts for Kids - How Much Do They Really Need?

A few months ago, I was absolutely blown away by this article on The Art of Simple (I've shared it before, here)

I've been reading a lot lately about decluttering and the overall concept of minimalism and this article was the jumping off point.

Their family of five is travelling the world, with backpacks.
Their children have very limited toys (only what they can carry) like lego, crayons and card games.
I keep coming back to read about it.
They are exploring and learning about their world in other ways. It's kind of magical.

Other parents always say things to me, like:
"oh, we have so much stuff"
"I can never keep the house tidy or organized"
"They have rooms filled with stuff that they never use"

This all comes back to my ideas around Slow Gifting and keeping it simple.
Why add to the clutter?

Creative Non-Toy Gifts For Kids

Why not come up with something insanely creative, something that inspires imagination, and (maybe) doesn't add to the clutter (or at least minimizes it).

I'm inspired, and I'm sharing ideas for non-toy gifts for kids on this Pinterest Board.

These ideas are mostly DIY projects, like imaginative play kits, gifts that can be used for pretend play, gifts that can be used with existing toys (like Lego trays and the DIY train board below), and subscriptions, like Petit Mail.

Slow Gifting: Sanctuary

A few weeks ago, I found myself alone.

What's so special about being alone?

I am an only child, and I also consider myself to be an introvert, although many people don't quite "get it", because I love to chat and interact. However, my clearest introvert trait is that I am really only able to fully recharge in quiet, in solitude.

Alone. for 24 hours.

It was so tempting to tackle the back-log of things to do.

Endless lists, miles long.

Blogging work, business work, creative work, house work, mama work.

All the things.

Instead. I forced myself to create some sanctuary.

I made myself a cup of tea and finished it before it got cold.

I lazed on the couch and watched a movie on Netflix. It was this one, if you're interested.

I read.

I slept.

I made freshly squeezed orange juice.

I browsed Pinterest for fun. I've been creating Boards that inspire me, like Wanderlust and for those with children, my favourite board right now is my Family Time board. Inspiring creative moments with my family.

I stared at the leftovers in the fridge and then I ignored them and made myself exactly what I felt like eating. A huge bowl of pasta, with sautéed red onions, smothered in pesto and topped with grated parmesan.

The little gifts we give ourselves are so important, but often the most neglected.

Your sanctuary might not look exactly like mine, but you have your own idea of sanctuary.

Think about it.

Create it for yourself.

A gift we can give ourselves.

I'm preparing to wind down for the Summer and take a little blogging break.

Even though the original purpose of this text has nothing to do with gift-giving, it really speaks to it, don't you think? I keep returning to this book.

I have started an ongoing process of decluttering our home, inspired by Tania at Manusmade and have just been thinking about all the material objects that we have, keep and gift.

What purpose do they serve?
How can we gift thoughtfully, but also in a more mindful and practical way so as not to clutter the lives of others?

Then. This article from The Art of Simple came my way about minimizing kids toys. I shared it on my Facebook page and got a great response from many of you. A family travelling the world and living out of backpacks (with just a few toys). So powerful.
How much do we really need to spark imagination, creativity and joy in gift-giving?

I have written about these #slowgifting topics before, like MORE, 3 Simple Tips to take the Stress out of Gifting, and other posts in this category, but I, like everyone, need regular reminders and inspiration.

I'm planning to give more experience gifts this year. I'm sending pretty packages by mail. I'm giving books that can be read and donated, or passed along afterwards.
Or for children, homemade gifts that can spark imagination and be played with for a shorter period of time, then easily disposed of, or passed along, if necessary.

This post has been sitting in my brain for a while. Waiting for the right time to share with you. The value of celebrations and traditions as part gifting has been gaining more and more importance for me lately.

As a child, I do not remember the specific gifts I received for birthdays and holidays. Of course, a few stand out, especially if there was something that I really wanted that year, but for the most part the material gifts did not mark the occasion.

Do you know what moments really stand out from my childhood? The traditions.

Special Valentine's Day cookies that were only made once a year

Easter chocolate hunts with hand-written notes in special Easter Bunny writing (I wish I still had some of those)
Table set in the same way each year for specific celebrations

It was special. It was important. It was family.

If you're feeling monumentally stressed out about trying to "do it all", just stop. Gather a few ideas below for simple celebrations and traditions. Pick what works best for you, or create your own tradition.

Things I'm Gifting Vol. 3

In the Fall, I participated in a snail mail gift exchange - my package was for Marisa at Omiyage.

I've been experimenting with these handmade paper + ribbon gift toppers, which I'm loving and you can expect to see more of in the future.

This gift had a lot of focus on packaging, because there is nothing better than a snail mail surprise filled with beautiful parcels. I embellished kraft paper bags, and hand-stamped a small fabric bag with creatiate's deer stamp to hold my gifts.

I originally published this post in 2013, but I love it so much I wanted to give it some new exposure - plus, it's perfect for Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day. I've been practising my sewing! My little loves to go on adventures to the mailbox, so I decided that some felt play mail would be the perfect little Valentine. It's a sweet handmade gift that lasts well beyond Valentine's Day. I've seen several play mail sewing tutorials around the internet, but I kind of took bits and pieces and made up my own.

Want to make your own? I promise, it's not hard. I use a sewing machine for some basic project about once every 3 years (although I'm really starting to like it more now!) So, if I can do it, you can too!

Supplies

(+) Wool felt in colours of your choice

(+) Cotton fabric in colour or pattern of your choice

(+) Embroidery thread and needle

(+) Pinking Shears
(+) Velcro

To make a play letter/postcard

(+) Cut two (2) contrasting pieces of wool felt into rectangles (to make the front and back).

(+) Cut a small heart from another piece of felt - I cut this one free-hand by folding the felt in half and cutting a half-heart shape (this makes your heart symmetrical).

(+) Using embroidery thread, hand-stitch the heart to 1 piece of wool felt.

(+) If you like, embroider a word on the felt as well (I used a simple back stitch).

(+) Sew the front and back pieces of felt together.

(+) Voila! A play letter/postcard.

You could even stop after this step if you wanted to. A few play postcards would be cute (and they are easier to make than the envelopes - instructions coming up next!)

To make an envelope

Part 1
(+) Cut a piece of wool felt (I used white) into a large rectangle.

(+) Fold the bottom of the wool felt two thirds (2/3) of the way up - this will eventually form the "pouch" part of the envelope. The remaining one third (1/3) part will form the envelope "flap". Cut in at a slight angle to give an envelope look to the top 1/3 piece of the rectangle (as shown).

(+) Use your wool felt piece as a template to cut a piece of cotton fabric in the same shape (I used pinking shears to cut the cotton fabric to prevent fraying).

(+) Sew the wool and cotton fabric pieces together.

Part 2
(+) Sew small squares of velcro to the front and back of the fabric envelope, as shown. This will hold down the envelope "flap" and allow for a small postage stamp.

(+) Fold the bottom of the rectangle up to form the "pouch" of the envelope. Sew the sides again to hold everything together.

(+) Cut two small squares of felt to act as a postage stamp. Sew together around the perimeter. Add a small piece of velcro and sew to attach.

Snail Mail Care Packages

Sometimes.
Sometimes you want to show you care, but you aren't sure how.
Sometimes you want to give a little something to someone who lives far away.
Sometimes a little effort + a beautiful presentation can really brighten someone's day.

So I put together some snail mail care packages with little notes and a gift card.

I used beautiful envelopes and paper, most of which were sent to me by Joy via Marisa when I told some of my online friends about this project.
