World's oldest man (Walter Breuning) dies aged 114

Walter Breuning was born in 1896 and lived through two world wars and more than a century of history.

A railroad man for most of his working life Breuning started work in 1916, bought his first car in 1919 and retired in 1967 before returning to work again as the manager and secretary for the Shriners until the grand old age of 99. In the years before his death Breuning would sit outside the Rainbow Retirement Community in an armchair wearing a suit and tie next to a Guinness World Records certificate proclaiming him the world's oldest man.

' KOMPAS.com - Walter Breuning, the world’s oldest man and second-oldest person, has died in the US, aged 114. Breuning died of natural causes in a Montana hospital, said a spokeswoman for the retirement home where he lived. He was 26 days younger than Besse Cooper of Georgia, whom the Gerontology Research Group in Los Angeles lists as the world’s oldest person at 114.
In an interview with The Associated Press last autumn, Breuning attributed his longevity to eating just two meals a day, working as long as he could and always embracing change - especially death. ‘We’re all going to die. Some people are scared of dying. Never be afraid to die. Because you’re born to die,’ he said.

Breuning was born on September 21, 1896, in Minnesota and spent his early years in South Dakota. That first decade of the 1900s was literally a dark age for his family. They had no electricity or running water. A bath for young Walter would require his mother to fetch water from the well outside and heat it on the coal-burning stove. He lied about his age and got a job in Minnesota with the Great Northern Railway at 16. He moved to Montana two years later and remained a loyal railwayman for the rest of his life, working there for 50 years, marrying co-worker Agnes Twokey and travelling by aeroplane only once in his life. He earned $90 a month for working seven days a week at the beginning, an amount he said was a lot of money at that time. In 1919, he bought his first car, a $150 second-hand Ford. Breuning remembered driving around town and spooking the horses that still crowded the dirt streets of Great Falls.

‘We had more damn runaways back in those days,’ Breuning said. ‘Horses are just scared of cars.’ He and his wife bought property for $15 and planned to build a house but everything went belly up when the Depression struck. ‘Everybody got laid off in the ’30s,’ Breuning said.

‘Nobody had any money at all. In 1933, they built the civic centre over here. Sixty-five cents an hour, you know. That was the wage - big wage.' Breuning was able to hold on to his job, but he and Agnes never built their house. They sold the lot for $25, making a tidy $10 profit. It turned out to be the only time Breuning ever owned property - he was a renter for the rest of his life. Agnes died in 1957 after 35 years of marriage. The couple had no children and Breuning never remarried. In 1963 - the year the Beatles released their first album - Breuning decided it was time to retire at 67. But he stuck by his philosophy and kept working.

He became the manager and secretary for the freemasons organisation the Shriners, a position he held until he was 99. Breuning moved into the Rainbow Retirement Community in 1980, calling home a spare studio apartment with bare walls. He would spent his days in an armchair outside the retirement home director’s office in a suit and tie, sitting near a framed Guinness Book of Records certificate proclaiming him the world’s oldest man. He would eat breakfast and lunch and then retire to his room in the early afternoon. He would visit the doctor just twice a year for check-ups and the only medication he would take was aspirin, director Tina Bundtrock said.

With most of his relatives gone, Breuning said his real family was there in the Rainbow. He received letters from admirers from around the world and he kept up with world events. 'Everybody says your mind is the most important thing about your body. Your mind and your body. You keep both busy, and by God you’ll be here a long time,' he said. Breuning had not asked for a funeral, retirement home officials said, and requested that donations be given to the Shriners’ Children’s Travel Fund and the Scottish Rite Language Disorder Center in lieu of flowers.

Unexplained Lights: UFOs sighted over Chicago

Sightings of a series of lights moving across the sky over Chicago have hit the headlines this week.

Witnesses crowded on the streets to look skywards at around 8pm on Saturday to witness a series of orange blinking lights moving together overhead. No unusual weather conditions were reported at the time the incident occured.

'A strange group of lights moving together across the Chicago sky Saturday night has some residents there wondering if what they saw were UFOs.
One of those people, Nicole Dragozetich, caught the unexplained phenomenon on her cell phone video camera.

She said she was driving down 35th Street and Western on Chicago's South Side at approximately 8 p.m. Saturday when she noticed at least a dozen people stopped in their tracks, staring at the sky.

The video she shot shows a line of several lights seeming to fly together low in the nighttime sky. The lights were orange, and they all seemed to blink together.

At first they were traveling in a straight line, but then formed different patterns.

On the video voices of the people watching the lights can be heard saying, 'They came from Roswell,' and 'That's creepy. I want to know what it is.'

Mark Bishop, meteorologist ABC station WLC-TV in Chicago said there were no unusual weather occurrences in the area Saturday evening reported by the National Weather Service.'

Satanism surge adds to demand for exorcists

The Roman Catholic Church has warned that a rise in Satanism has produced a rise in demand for exorcists.

Blaming the trend on easy access to information about Devil-worshipping on the internet the Vatican is holding a six day conference on the topic in Rome this week aimed at scrutinising Satanism and highlighting its risks. "The internet makes it much easier than in the past to find information about Satanism," says Carlo Climati who specialises in the dangers the practice poses to young people.

A surge in Satanism fuelled by the internet has led to a sharp rise in the demand for exorcists, the Roman Catholic Church has warned.

'The web has made it easier than ever before to access information on Devil-worshipping and the occult, experts said.

Exorcism is the subject of a six-day conference being held this week at the Regina Apostolorum Pontifical University in Rome, which is under the Vatican's authority.

"The internet makes it much easier than in the past to find information about Satanism," said Carlo Climati, a member of the university who specialises in the dangers posed to young people by Satanism.

"In just a few minutes you can contact Satanist groups and research occultism. The conference is not about how to become an exorcist. It's to share information about exorcism, Satanism and sects. It's to give help to families and priests. There is a particular risk for young people who are in difficulties or who are emotionally fragile," said Mr Climati.

The object of seminars was to scrutinise the phenomenon of Satanism with "seriousness and scientific rigour", avoiding a "superficial or sensational approach", he said.

The conference in Rome has brought together more than 60 Catholic clergy as well as doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, teachers and youth workers to discuss how to combat the dangers of Devil-worship.

Organisers say the rise of Satanism has been dangerously underestimated in recent years.

"There's been a revival," said Gabriele Nanni, a former exorcist and another speaker at the course.

In theory, any priest can perform an exorcism – a rite involving prayers to drive the Devil out of the person said to be possessed.

But Vatican officials said three years ago that parish priests should call in professional exorcists if they suspect one of their parishioners needs purging of evil.

An exorcist should be called when "the moral certainty has been reached that the person is possessed", said Father Nanni, a member of the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

That could be indicated by radical and disturbing changes in the person's behaviour and voice, or an ability to garble in foreign languages or nonsensical gibberish.

While the number of genuine cases of possession by the Devil remained relatively small, "we must be on guard because occult and Satanist practices are spreading a great deal, in part with the help of the internet and new technologies that make it easier to access these rituals," he said.

The Vatican's chief exorcist claimed last year that the Devil lurked in the Vatican, the very heart of the Catholic Church.

Father Gabriele Amorth said people who are possessed by Satan vomit shards of glass and pieces of iron, scream, dribble and slobber, utter blasphemies and have to be physically restrained.

He claimed that the sex abuse scandals which have engulfed the Church in the US, Ireland, Germany and other countries, were proof that the anti-Christ was waging a war against the Holy See. He said Pope Benedict XVI believed "wholeheartedly" in the practice of exorcism.'

Expert claims El Chupacabra mystery solved

Author Benjamin Radford believes El Chupacabra is but a left-over memory from a science fiction movie.

Managing editor of the journal The Skeptical Inquirer Radford is no stranger to unusual stories, he has managed to trace the first physical description of the creature to a sketch made by an eyewitness in 1995 which was made in the same year as the movie "Species" was released. The human/alien hybrid featured in the film he noticed was very similar indeed to the Chupacabra sketch.

'Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster rank as the top two best-known monsters in the world, but since its 1995 debut, El Chupacabra has made a Justin Bieber-like ascension to No. 3 on the charts. The relative newcomer to the monster world is the go-to culprit for weird livestock deaths and creates a massive media stir whenever it's "sighted.
' It even has a fan club on Facebook. That could all end, now that Benjamin Radford, author of several books on monsters and paranormal phenomena, managing editor of the journal The Skeptical Inquirer and LiveScience columnist, has released what he says to be definitive proof that El Chupacabra is not real; it's not even a hoax, he said, but rather a leftover memory of a science-fiction film. Stories of El Chupacabra first surfaced in March 1995 in Puerto Rico, Radford said, when dead, blood-drained goats began showing up (El Chupacabra translates to 'goat sucker').

That August, a newspaper printed an eyewitness description of a bipedal creature, 4 to 5 feet tall with spikes down its back, long, thin arms and legs, and an alienlike oblong head with red or black eyes. That depiction became associated with El Chupacabra, and it reports of similar creatures began popping up throughout the Caribbean, in Latin America, Mexico and Florida. The frenzy had died down slightly by 2000, but picked back up in 2004 when something began attacking livestock in Texas.

A farmer shot one of the offenders, and later more alleged El Chupacabra carcasses turned up. They looked nothing like the Puerto Rico original, though, and DNA tests later revealed that they were actually coyotes with a severe case of mange. On top of the sudden change in appearance—a hairless, snarly-looking four-legged creature is the popular depiction in Texas—these coyotes didn't even act like El Chupacabra.

'When you did a necropsy of the chickens and goats that they attacked, they all had normal blood levels," Radford told Life's Little Mysteries. 'They were not, in fact, vampirized.'

'By the mid-2000s, anything weird was being called El Chupacabra,' he said. 'Mangy coyotes. Dead raccoons. Even a dried fish in New Mexico, which looks nothing like El Chupacabra.'
And yet the myth continued to gain momentum, so Radford, who has researched El Chupacabra and other strange sightings around the world for years, decided to cut it off at the head and set off to Puerto Rico to trace the beast back to its fictional roots. (Disclosure: Radford is a contributing writer to Life's Little Mysteries and columnist for its sister site, LiveScience.) Mistaken identity Radford dug through every El Chupacabra mention and traced the physical description of the monster to a single event in the second week of August 1995, when a sketch from an eyewitness named Madelyne Tolentino ran in a Puerto Rican newspaper. Locals immediately tagged the alien-looking animal as El Chupacabra.

The creature, Radford noticed, shared a strong resemblance to the alien/human hybrid in the 1995 sci-fi thriller "Species." When he spoke to Tolentino, he asked her if the thing that she saw could have been inspired by the film. Indeed, she had seen the movie in the weeks prior to making her description.
'You can make a direct connection between the film hitting theaters, her seeing the creature in the film, seeing it in the street, making the report and entering the public conscious,' Radford said.

Soon after, reports of nearly identical creatures began appearing throughout Latin America. But these can be dismissed, Radford says, because they're all based on Tolentino's Hollywood-inspired monster.

'What I've tried to do is take the whole El Chupacabra enchilada and break it into small mysteries and then solve those mysteries,' Radford said. 'There's no place else for those mysteries to hide now. If I haven't solved every piece of it, then I don't know what I'm missing. It's all there.'

'That said, if next month or next year somebody finds El Chupacabra that's sucking blood from animals, I'm happy to eat my crow and add a chapter to the book.'

Lisa Manning and her two children capture ghost on home video

A young family being terrorised by a poltergeist have been advised by a priest to wear crucifixes.

Lisa Manning and her two children have fled their home several times following paranormal activity that seems to focus heavily on objects being moved around on their own accord. Hidden cameras placed in one room have even managed to pick up a door opening on its own and a chair sliding across the floor.

' A spooked family have called in a real-life 'ghostbuster' - after claiming to have captured on video a poltergeist moving a chair across a bedroom.

Lisa Manning and her children Ellie, 11, and Jaydon, six, have fled their house in terror several times because of bizarre goings-on.

They include pots and pans being thrown around the kitchen, window blinds moving up and down by themselves, lights being switched on and off and drawers being opened.
Last week they were even forced to climb out of a window after being trapped in their living room when the door locked by itself. Now they have been advised to wear crucifixes by a priest after capturing video footage of a chair moving by itself in Ellie's bedroom.

Carer Miss Manning, 34, shot the film two weeks ago after putting hidden cameras in the family's home in Holbrooks, an area of Coventry.

The 52-second clip shows a wardrobe door opening before a pink swivel chair moves slowly backwards towards the wall. While cynics might scoff and suggest the chair could have been moved by a length of strategically placed fishing line, Miss Manning is adamant the footage proves a ghost exists.

She said she feels like she is 'living in a scary movie'.

Miss Manning, who lives with her partner Anthony, 25, in the house, added: 'One medium came in and said our house is a portal, a kind of bus stop for spirits, which they use to pass into our world.

'I set up the video camera because I wanted to prove the ghost exists.

'I couldn't believe it when I played the tape back, it sent chills up my spine.

'We called our landlords and they sent in a priest who blessed the house but said himself that we shouldn't live here, we definitely shouldn't stay.

'He gave us all small crucifixes which we carry at all times in the house.

'The problem is because we can't see it, we don't know where it's going to be or what it's going to do.

'This is a horror house. It's like living in a scary movie. The worst thing about it is, even I can't believe what's happening myself.'
Lisa, a full-time carer, said she was sceptical when her children started complaining about hearing noises and seeing objects move on their own.

But she became suspicious after her pet dog was mysteriously killed last October after apparently being shoved down the stairs.

She said: 'I found him lying at the bottom of the stairs badly hurt.

'No one was in the house at the time. I took him to the vet but he died. The vet told me later his injuries were consistent with being shoved.'

Lisa is now begging her landlord Whitefriars to re-house her family. She scatters the house with salt, puts up crucifixes and wears crystals while she waits to hear whether the family can move to another home.

And last week Miss Manning claims the spooky antics have got worse, with lights flickering on and off and hearing footsteps at night.

Last Wednesday the family were so scared they even hid in the living room and were forced to escape out the window after the door was mysteriously blocked.

Miss Manning said: 'Ellie tried to open the door and shouted at Anthony to stop pulling it to stop her from getting out.

'She didn't realise he was right behind her.

'We all tried to open the door but it was stuck as though someone had put their weight behind it. In the end we got out through the window.'

Ellie said: 'I'm scared to go home and I don't like to go upstairs on my own.'

Whitefriars say they are advising Miss Manning on applying for a new home.

Dave Round, area service manager, said: 'We sympathise with Miss Manning and have been supporting her with the issues she has been experiencing.

'We first met with Miss Manning in January and our staff have listened to her concerns in a sensitive manner.

'In February, after detailed discussions between Miss Manning and our staff, we agreed to arrange for a priest to attend the property, at her request.

'We have offered advice and support to Miss Manning on the options available to her for applying to move home and we are happy to continue to do this.'

Simply practice the art of stillness. Try to be still, but don't beat yourself up if you have an itch. If stray thoughts come into your mind, simply acknowledge them and then send them away (tell them to come back later).
The unfortunate fact of the matter is that there is very, very little about psychic powers that falls under common sense. Scams in particular are specifically designed to give the illusion of common sense where only lies exist. I would encouragelearning about cold reading for the very simple reason that you will, statistically, run into a scammer sooner rather than later. Learn how to fake psychic abilities, because that is going to be the only way to defend yourself against those who will try to take advantage of you.

Unexplained Phenomena : What on Earth ?

For years the crop circle phenomenon has both intrigued and baffled. Most people, whether they believe them to be clever hoaxes or something more will have both heard and formed an opinion on these peculiar though beautiful phenomena. In celebration of this mystery we're featuring a quick review of a new documentary being released on DVD this month, What on Earth? Inside the Crop Circle Mystery. The film is produced and directed by Suzanne Taylor who has followed the crop circle phenomenon for many years.

Unlike some other documentaries what this documentary does not do is latch on to one specific theory and then present it as the definitive one, what it does do is explore all the possibilities and present them in an unbiased manner. No stone is left unturned, the film accepts for instance that there are hoaxers out there and even follows some of them as they go about the process of creating circles, no one explanation is put forward as the "correct" one and by the end its left up to the viewer to decide which make the most sense.

Throughout the film Taylor meets and speaks to a number of people including researchers and investigators as well as people who have had experiences with crop circles either when visiting them or when circles have appeared in their own fields. There is a lot of passion for the topic here, some have spent many years investigating the subject including Taylor herself and it shows, the interviews are fascinating to listen to and some of the stories are genuinely perplexing.

The film is presented very well with a large number of crop circles being shown throughout, the music fits very well and adds to the atmosphere of mystery and intrigue. By the end the film as a whole feels a bit like a spiritual experience, opening the mind to a plethora of metaphysical concepts and leaving even the most die-hard skeptic believing that there may just be something to the crop circle mystery after all.

Unexplained Phenomena : Eyes of the Mothman

November 15th 1966 - four young adults traveling through the West Virginia backwoods of an abandoned TNT Plant, come across something, unnatural... The headlights from their '57 Chevy strike what appears to be a black, lurking, lumbering, 7 foot tall man with red eyes and wings! Before the winged man of Point Pleasant would make his departure from its menacing raid on the God fearing souls of this minute church going community, 46 people would die tragically and hundreds more would be left traumatized and emotionally scarred for life. With rumors adrift of a haunting Indian curse, wild stories of men in black, bridge collapses, and a history of uncanny coincidences, UFO sightings, and even alien abductions; The Eyes of the Mothman is the first feature length documentary to delve deeper than any other program to uncover the truth behind this unsolved mystery from 43 years ago.

Even filming the documentary yielded some unusual circumstances:

* Immediately after production ceased on Eyes of the Mothman, a number of the crew got very ill. Director Matthew J. Pellowski had a pneumonia for 8 months causing post production to be put on hold. Assistant Camera Man Justin Massler suffered a severe mental breakdown and suffered a great deal of similar symptoms that alleged Mothman witnesses also endured.
* Anastasia Konstantinou, one of the producers of the film had a ghostly encounter in her hotel room during filming. Crew stayed at the historic Lowe Hotel which is known for being haunted. Her room was in what was once the old slave quarters, during one night she woke up from a strange noise in the room and reported seeing hundreds of red colored lights all around her room.
* During Post Production, the hard drive labeled “Cornstalk Curse” crashed several times causing delays for over a year in the animation work seen in the film.
* Audio files also were lost twice during post production causing 6 months in delays.
* Many believe that there is a curse associated with the mothman where people involved with any book, film, or project involving the myth, suffer untimely deaths. The Mothman Death List is a popular internet based legend. So far since production ceased on Eyes of the Mothman, three of the interview subjects (Roy Cross, Captain Charles Stone and Merle Partridge) have passed away.
* During production, both crew members Matthew Pellowski and Anastasia Konstantinou were approached by two men that fit the description of “the men in black.” These men asked questions about what we were doing and why and subtly suggested that we not continue on with this project. It was a very strange encounter that would likely need further explanation but basically, two strange guys who came out of no where while we were filming the silver bridge scene, tried to deter us from filming this project.
* Crew member Justin Massler eventually had a great deal of troubles with the law and after years of unusual behavior, attributed his change in demeanor and personality to his experience in working on the Eyes of the Mothman.
* For years the director (Matt Pellowski) had reoccurring dreams about a strange facility near a great river that he never understood. During his first visit to Point Pleasant West Virginia, he realized that the facility in his dream was the TNT plant in Mason county, one of the first locations Mothman was spotted. It was been discovered that there are a great deal of people from around the world that dream about the Ohio River that have never been there. Upon seeing the river in person they discover the river they dream about is the Ohio river. There is also a great deal of legends and myths and strange things that have happened regarding the Ohio river. (*note the dream reference above was taken from research I did for a previous article but I cannot remember when I found it, it was a research study conducted about people they found dreaming about the Ohio river who had never seen it in person)
* Several people were interviewed who refused to say on camera that they worked at the TNT plant, those same people also said that the people who built the TNT plant in Point Pleasant also build the area 51 facility in Nevada.

Mayan codex may lead to lost treasure

An expert in Mayan writing believes he has deciphered a code that will lead to eight tons of gold.

Joachim Rittsteig, professor emeritus at Dresden University and forty-year scholar of Mayan history, has led a small group of German scientists on a mission to uncover a hoard of more than 2,000 gold tablets that he understands to be lost beneath the waters of Lake Izabal in eastern Guatemala.

His chief reference material, the Dresden Codex, is one of only a few major documents from which we have pieced together our understanding of Mayan culture. It is the same codex that purportedly mentions an imminent apocalypse in 2012.

Rittsteig's interest, however, stems from mention of a city that housed the tablets that sank beneath the lake after a devastating earthquake in 666 BC.

Amazing Boy 7-year-old in Serbia claimed he is magnetic

Amazing very amazing boys 7-year-old called Bogdan is able to make a host of different metal objects and even plates stick to his skin.

Demonstrating his talent in front of a film crew the young Serbian was unphased by the attention or by the selection of household objects that seemed to miraculously stick to his chest. According to his family Bogdan is unable to go near anything electrical as he seems to have an adverse effect on televisions, computers and other devices.

' A seven-year-old boy in Serbia is attracting worldwide attention after his family claim he is magnetic.

To prove their claim, the family paraded the boy in front of an camera crew, with a variety of objects stuck to his chest.

The boy, called Bogdan, seemed unfazed by the attention - nor did he seem to mind having a variety of cutlery stuck to his body.

The footage ended up on MSNBC, where reporter Al Stirrett said Bodgan did indeed have a unique ability.

Mr Stirrett told MailOnline that the family did not offer their last name, possibly because of the age of the boy.

Nevertheless, they're happy to show off Bodgan's ability - which they claim he has had since birth.

The footage shows Bogdan first with a variety of cutlery attached to him, then a TV remote control is added to his body.

They say the objects stay there until Bogdan removes them by hand.

Bizarrely, it's not just metal that seems to be attracted to the youngster. China plates and bowls seem to adhere themselves to Bogdan's chest as well.

Any feelings that Bogdan might be nothing more than a sticky little boy are dispelled when a large and heavy frying pan is stuck to his body.

The family say Bogdan is not allowed to go near anything electrical, such as a television or a computer, because his alleged magnetism turns them off.

The good news, however4, is that he will never lose the TV remote control.'

UFO Floating across the skies over the Scottish City, Glasgow

Paul Brown reported a strange glowing object floating across the skies over the Scottish city.

"I watched for the lights of plane or helicopter but nothing. It continued to travel east shimmering like a star in winter sky, a tangerine kind of glow round shaped," he said. Mr Brown discounted the idea that it was a sky lantern stating "i've studied astronomy for many years and seen many things in the sky this was very new and I've not found a match."

Here is the story :

' A UFO sighting over Glasgow's Parkhead Forge shopping centre in the east of the city is being claimed by a visitor to the STV News website.

In an email, Paul Brown said that he made the sighting on January 17 at around 8pm.

'It was heading east and at first I looked up and thought it was helicopter spotlight, it moved at similar speed as emergency helicopter would if low in sky but this was very high - as high as a jet.'

He continued: 'I watched for the lights of plane or helicopter but nothing. It continued to travel east shimmering like a star in winter sky, a tangerine kind of glow round shaped.'

While the description appears to correspond to that of a Chinese sky lantern, the increasingly popular paper and bamboo objects that rise into the air when a small candle is lit inside them. There have been many reports of UFOs in recent years that can be attributed to them.

They are able to travel considerable distances and reach great heights, the candle producing hot air that is trapped in the paper, causing it to rise and be carried by the wind.

However, Mr Brown was quick to doubt this could explain the object.

He said: 'I thought maybe a lantern, but it was way too fast and steady trajectory to be wind powered. There was no wind anyway and it wasn't rising, it was heading east at (an) exact height.'

He added: 'I've studied astronomy for many years and seen many things in the sky this was very new and I've not found a match. '

Two new geoglyphs found in Peru’s Nazca province

Scientists have identified two new geoglpyhs of a human head and an animal in Nazca, Peru.

Situated close to the Nazca Lines the new geoglyphs are thought to have been missed previously due to their small sizes of between three and four metres in length. The team had previously uncovered almost one hundred glyphs carved in to the desert in 2006.

'Two scientists from Yamagata University in Japan reported finding two new geoglyphs in southern Peru’s Nazca province, Andina reported.

The new geoglyphs depict a human head and an animal figure that the researchers have yet to identify, state news agency Andina reported. According to the archaeology faculty chief at Yamagata, Yoichi Watanabe, the drawing of the human head is 4.2 meters long and 3.1 m wide. The geoglyphs have most probably not been identified in aerial surveys before because of their small size, Watanabe said.

The researchers are continuing with their work and will submit a final report to Peru’s Culture Ministry outlining the findings, Ica department’s regional director of culture, Americo Baiocchi, said.

“They are still in the [research] phase. What they have reported is likely an advance that they have sent to the university,” Baiocchi said. “They still need to determine the period that the geoglyphs belong to.” The research team, headed by Masato Sakai, also found close to a hundred other geoglyphs in 2006, lines and triangles carved into the desert.

The geoglyphs are located close to the Nazca Lines, one of Peru’s most popular attractions where tourist planes routinely fly over the ancient geoglyphs of monkeys, hummingbirds and spiders. The Lines are a UNESCO world heritage, created between 500 B.C. and A.D. 500, and are among the world’s greatest archaeological enigmas.'

The lost tomb of the Roman emperor Caligula has been found in Rome

Tomb of Caligula discovered. The lost tomb of the Roman emperor Caligula has been found at Lake Nemi, south of Rome.

Italian police reported finding the site after catching someone attempting to load part of a large statue recovered from the tomb on to the back of a lorry. Caligula was one of ancient Rome's most notorious emperors, attributed with killing for pleasure and sleeping with his own sisters he was widely considered to be completely insane.

The emperor had a villa there, as well as a floating temple and a floating palace; their hulks were recovered in Mussolini's time but destroyed in the war. The police said the statue was shod with a pair of the "caligae" military boots favoured by the emperor – real name Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus; as a boy, Gaius accompanied his father on campaigns in Germany; the soldiers were amused he wore a miniature uniform, and gave him his nickname Caligula, or "little boot". The statue is estimated to be worth €1m. Its rare Greek marble, throne and god's robes convinced the police it came from the emperor's tomb. Under questioning, the tomb raider led them to the site, where excavations will start today. '

The mystery of the Elephant Bird By Sir David Attenborough

Sir David Attenborough has returned to Madagascar to discover what happened to the elephant bird.

The massive bird was 10 feet tall and weighed half a ton but its extinction has always remained a mystery, while its unlikely they were hunted to extinction it is very possible that early humans would have assisted their demise through the collecting of their huge eggs that could feed whole families. Here is the story :

As souvenirs go, the giant fossilised egg that Sir David Attenborough keeps wrapped up for safe-keeping in the cellar of his London home is not bad for someone with a 60 year career as Britain's foremost natural history documentary maker.

Now in a bid to find out more about the foot long egg he collected on the island of Madagascar 50 years ago and the birds that laid them, Sir David has returned to the island off the east coast of Africa for a new BBC documentary on a quest to discover what happened to the largest birds to ever live on the planet.

The egg was laid by an elephant bird, which were more than 10 feet tall and weighed around half a ton, but what caused the huge birds to die out has remained a mystery, with some claiming they were hunted to extinction by humans and others blaming climate change.

But Sir David claims there is now compelling evidence that suggests the birds were gradually killed off by the early human inhabitants on the island stealing the giant eggs for food. He believes the birds themselves were revered by the indigenous populations, but the use of their eggs for food, combined with the destruction of the forests where the elephant birds lived, led to their eventual demise.

Recent archaeological evidence has revealed the fragments of elephant bird egg shells among the remains of human fires, suggesting that the eggs, which are 180 times bigger than a chicken egg, regularly provided food for entire families.

Sir David says: "I doubt it was hunted to extinction – anyone who has seen an ostrich in a zoo knows that it has a kick which can open a man's stomach and an enraged elephant bird, many times the size of an ostrich, must have been a truly formidable opponent.

"I suspect it was its egg. They may not have been able to tackle an adult bird, but they could have taken its eggs which would have been a huge source of food.

"Even if the bird itself was held in awe or fear by the people here, it's unlikely the eggs were – and that would have meant the gradual disappearance of this unique giant."

Sir David first travelled to Madagascar in 1960 when he was filming for the TV series ZooQuest. While there he discovered a few fragments of thick shell around the camp where he was staying in the south of the island and began offering a reward to the locals if they could bring him more.

He said: "A little boy brought in some big pieces that looked as though they fitted together, which indeed they did."

Using sticky tape he pieced together the fossilised egg, which is bigger than a rugby ball, before having it professionally stuck together when he arrived back in London.

As part of the new BBC documentary, Attenborough and the Giant Egg, Sir David returns to Madagascar to trace the story of what happened to the elephant birds by revisiting some of the places he went to on his original trip while also looking at some of the most recent scientific evidence. Radiocarbon dating of bones and shells have suggested that the birds were still present on the island around 1,000 years ago. Humans are thought to have arrived on Madagascar around 2,000 years ago.

European sailors visiting the islands during the 1600s brought back stories of the giant birds and came back with the huge eggs while some reports state the last of the giant birds died out in the 1700s. Experts, however, believe the birds largely vanished from the island around 1,000 years ago, although they may have clung on in small remote pockets on the island.

During the programme charting his quest to discover more about the bird, Sir David has his own egg dated using radiocarbon dating and discovers it is much older than he had thought – around 1,300 years old.

Dr Tom Higham, deputy director of the radiocarbon accelerator unit at Oxford University's research laboratory for archaeology, said: "We have done dating on quite a few elephant bird eggs and when we looked back at the dates we were getting, the youngest were around 900AD. The populations of humans on the island increased around that time too.

"Sir David had read a lot of the literature that suggests the birds were still around until much more recently, so I think he was surprised by how old it was."

Sir David also fears that the fate suffered by the elephant bird provides a cautionary tale for the damage being done to the environment in modern Madagascar, which is leaving many other species, including rare Lemur, critically endangered.

Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, he said: "This is the first film I have made where I deliberately go back to a place I knew long ago and chart the changes that have taken place.

"I go back to a place where there was forest 50 years ago when I was there and it has all been knocked down the only thing that is there is an abandoned saw mill. It was sad to go back and see that.

"It is an example of the way the island has changed over the years. There are now three times as many people living on the island since I was there 50 years ago. The only places they can live and grow food were the only places that were wild. The wild places are being taken over by people building villages on them and rice fields."

"Cosmic bruises" suggest other universes

Scientists have discovered evidence that parallel universes 'jostled' our own in the very distant past.

Patterns found in the background microwave radiation are believed to indicate where other universes collided with our own at least four times, it is a significant find in favour of the idea that ours is not the only universe in existence. Here is the story :

Scientists say that they have found evidence that our universe was 'jostled' by other parallel universes in the distant past.

The incredible claim emerged after they studied patterns in the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) – the after-effects of the Big Bang.

They say they may have found evidence that four circular patterns found in the CMB are 'cosmic bruises' where our universe has crashed into other universes at least four times.

The findings are based on the complex theory of eternal inflation for our universe. This theory holds that out universe if only one bubble in a larger cosmos and that other universes,which will have different physics to our own, all exist at the same time. This is also know as the the multiverse theory.

Where these universe bubbles crash against each other they leave signature traces in the background radiation, some scientists believe.

The findings, by Stephen Feeney from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University College London, are likely to be controversial. A number of cosmologists have already written in response to the paper that it is too easy to jump to conclusions about what can be seen in the CMB.

The team behind the paper accept that 'it is rather easy to find all sorts of statistically unlikely properties in a large dataset like the CMB'.

But they add: 'If a bubble collision is verified by future data, then we will gain an insight not only into our own universe but a multiverse beyond.'

The paper, published online yesterday, comes just a month after a similar study of the background radiation claimed to have discovered evidence that the universe existed before the Big Bang.

Most scientists believe the universe was created in the Big Bang around 13.7 billion years ago. Stars and galaxies started to form around 300 million years later. Our Sun was born around five billion years ago, while life first appeared on the Earth around 3.7 billion years ago.

The CMB dates back to 300,000 years after the Big Bang and has now cooled to around -270 degrees Celsius.
A paper posted online on the website arXiv.org by respected scientists Professor Roger Penrose from Oxford University and Professor Vahe Gurzadyan from Yerevan State University, Armenia, suggested the universe could be much older han previously thought.

Penrose and Gurzadyan argue that evidence unearthed by Nasa’s Wilkinson Microwave Anisotophy Probe in the CMB shows imprints in the radiation that are older than the Big Bang. They say they have discovered 12 examples of concentric circles, some of which have five rings, meaning the same object has had five massive events in its history.

The rings appear around galaxy clusters in which the variation in the background radiation appears to be strangely low.

The research appears to cast aside the widely-held 'inflationary' theory of the origins of the universe, that it began with the Big Bang, and will continue to expand until a point in the future, when it will end. They believe the circles are imprints of extremely violent gravitational radiation waves generated by supermassive black hole collisions in a previous aeon before the last big bang.

Baboon god statue found in Egyptian ruins

The remains of statues including those of a pharoah and an Egyptian baboon god have been unearthed.

The find was made during an excavation at Amenhotep’s mortuary temple, the largest in ancient Egypt. The baboon statue is believed to be that of the god Hapi who was depicted as a baboon by the ancient Egyptians. Here is the story :

Archaeologists have discovered fragments of a statue of a pharaoh and an ancient god during a routine excavation at what was once the largest temple in ancient Egypt, culture minister Farouk Hosni said on Thursday.

According to Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, the fragments -- the legs of King Amenhotep III and a bust of the god Hapi depicted as a baboon -- were uncovered in the ruins of Amenhotep’s mortuary temple on the west bank of Luxor, Upper Egypt.

Work has been ongoing to uncover the ruins of the once powerful king’s funerary complex, the largest of its kind before it collapsed over 2,000 years ago during the Late Period. Although the blocks were reused in the construction of other temples, it is believed that the northern side of the temple served as a burial spot for broken.

"Because the statuary were ritually significant, they could not be destroyed," said antiquities chief Zahi Hawass, who headed the excavation.

"The excavation team is still digging to find fragments of the double statue. It is the first of its kind as it depicts the king seated with the god Hapi, one of the four sons of Horus, beside him."

In the last two years, five double statues of King Amenhotep III accompanied by the deities: Re-Horakhti, Khepri, Horus, and Hapi have been found.

Skeletons found in Pompeii reveal Roman families

The remains of those who died in the volcanic eruption that destroyed Pompeii continue to yield new insights.

Scientists examining the skeletons and the places in which they've been found have discovered clues in to the lives of those who perished in AD79 including everything from health care to the division between the rich and the poor. Here is the story :

"The basement storeroom under a large agricultural depot in the little suburb of Oplontis was full of pomegranates. To many of the Pompeiians trying to find shelter from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, it must have seemed strong and safe. About 50 people took cover there. We know they did because archaeologists in the 1980s found their skeletons, well preserved. They were overwhelmed by the volcanic debris and burning gases in the very place where they hoped they would be saved. We know how these poor people died and we know what killed them. But these skeletons can also tell us fascinating things about how the people in Pompeii actually lived. There are some very simple surprises. Syphilis For a start, we often imagine that the Romans, or anyone in the past for that matter, were all much shorter than we are. Well, not so these people. In fact, on average, they are taller than the population of modern Naples. We also imagine that the Romans would have died young. Again, this is another myth - as these skeletons show. There are plenty of middle-aged to elderly people among them. The truth is that childhood was the really dangerous time. All kinds of illnesses that we now vaccinate against or can easily cure with antibiotics were devastating killers. Only half the population would have made it to the age of 10. But if you got that far, you could look forward to a reasonable life expectancy in our terms. Interestingly, infectious diseases leave tell-tale marks and lines in the enamel of children's teeth. Many of the skeletons in the cellar show these - a visual history of the illnesses these people had survived. There are some more curious - and startling - discoveries too. The skeletons of a pair of twins show what were almost certainly the signs of congenital syphilis. If that is correct, then it puts paid to the usual idea that the disease was brought back to Europe from the New World by Christopher Columbus and his sailors in the 15th Century....."

Mona Lisa's eyes reveal code

Art police detective* have discovered tiny letters and numbers placed in the eyes of the Mona Lisa. Like something out of Dan Brown's Leonardo da Vinci Code the tiny letters have been known first under magnification, in the right eye the letters spell out Da Vinci's own initials LV suggesting that he placed them there deliberately.

" Intrigue is usually focused on her enigmatic smile. But the Mona Lisa was at the centre of a new mystery yesterday after art detectives took a fresh look at the masterpiece – and noticed something in her eyes. Hidden in the dark paint of her pupils are tiny letters and numbers, placed there by the artist Leonardo da Vinci and revealed only now thanks to high-magnification techniques. Experts say the barely distinguishable letters and numbers represent something of a real-life Da Vinci code. The revelation could have come straight from the pages of Dan Brown’s best-seller The Da Vinci Code, in which the Mona Lisa is said to contain hidden clues about the Holy Grail. Silvano Vinceti, president of Italy’s National Committee for Cultural Heritage, which spotted the symbols, said: ‘To the naked eye the symbols are not visible but with a magnifying glass they can clearly be seen. In the right eye appear to be the letters LV which could well stand for his name, Leonardo da Vinci, while in the left eye there are also symbols but they are not as defined.

- It is very difficult to make them out clearly but they appear to be the letters CE, or it could be the letter B.
- In the arch of the bridge in the background the number 72 can be seen or it could be an L and the number 2.
- You have to remember the picture is almost 500 years old so it is not as sharp and clear as when first painted.
- From the preliminary investigations we have carried out we are confident they are not a mistake and were put there by the artist.
- The search was initiated by another Dan Brown-style plot device after a fellow committee member discovered a musty book in an antique shop referring to symbols in the Mona Lisa’s eyes.
Mr Vinceti added: ‘Da Vinci put a special emphasis on the Mona Lisa and we know that in the last years of his life he took the painting with him everywhere. 'We also know that da Vinci was very esoteric and used symbols in his work to give out messages. ‘Who knows, they may even possibly be a love message to the figure in the painting.’ Mr Vinceti is a member of a group which is seeking permission to exhume da Vinci’s remains from his tomb at Amboise Castle in France’s Loire Valley.

They want to see if the artist’s skull is there so that they can try and recreate his face and establish if the Mona Lisa – owned by the French government and on display in The Louvre – is in fact a twist on a self-portrait of the artist as some believe. "

Pterosaurs used "pole vault" in to the air when taking off

According to a new study pterosaurs would have "pole vaulted" in to the air when taking off. Unlike modern birds prehistoric winged reptiles would have pushed off using their hind limbs and then thrusted themselves upwards using their arm muscles in a similar manner to modern bats. Here is the story :

" A new study claims that the ancient winged reptiles known as pterosaurs used a "pole-vaulting" action to take to the air. They say the creatures took off using all four of their limbs.

The reptiles vaulted over their wings, pushing off first with their hind limbs and then thrusting themselves upwards with their powerful arm muscles - not dissimilar to some modern bats.

The research is published in the open-access journal Plos One.

Pterosaurs lived at the same time as the dinosaurs, but belonged to a different group of reptiles. They existed from the Triassic Period until the end of the Cretaceous - about 220 million years ago to 65 million years ago.

In their study, Dr Mark Witton at Portsmouth University, UK, and Dr Michael Habib of Chatham University, Pennsylvania, US, reappraised giant pterosaur fossils.

Their findings challenge other claims that the giant pterosaurs - such as Pteranodon and the largest azhdarchids - were not capable of flying....."

700 Insect Species from 50 million Years ago Have Been Identified

50 million year old insects found in amber, Indian. A treasure trove of insects preserved in amber has been found in northwest India. Over 700 insect species from 50 million years ago have been identified within the amber including bees, ants and termites. Here is the story :

" A collection of amber deposits unearthed in northwest India has opened a spectacular window into insect life some 50 million years ago. At that time, what’s now the Asian subcontinent had just crashed into mainland Asia — about 100 million years after breaking off the coast of east Africa. During its long isolated float, life on that giant island had time to evolve into strange new forms.

That’s what’s researchers expected, anyway, but not what they found in the amber, described October 26 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Instead, the insects resemble what’s seen in amber deposits from continental landmasses of the time. (Amber is the geological name for fossilized tree resin, which often preserves insects that get stuck in it.) The findings suggest an unexpected transfer of insects, perhaps across chains of volcanic islands.

Although the new amber didn’t yield bizarre new species, it’s still loaded with fossil treasures. More than 700 insect species representing 55 families of insects have been identified inside. Among them are ancient bees, termites and ants — highly social insects that form some of the world’s most complex societies.

In the years to come, scientists will compare these ancient specimens to modern forms and develop a deeper understanding of how these creatures have evolved. Until they do, the bugs are plenty amazing to look at."

The world's oldest known dinosaur embryos have been identified at 190 million years old.
The eggs containing the embryos belonged to a species called Massospondylus and were found in South Africa in 1976, scientists have been using them to figure out what the baby dinosaurs might have looked like. Here is the story :

"Palaeontologists have identified the oldest known dinosaur embryos, belonging to a species that lived some 190 million years ago. The eggs of Massospondylus, containing well-perserved embryos, were unearthed in South Africa back in 1976. The creature appears to be an ancestor of the family that includes the long-necked dino once known as Brontosaurus. The study in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology also sheds light on the dinosaurs' early development. The researchers used the embryos to reconstruct what the dinosaurs' babies might have looked like when they roamed the Earth. Having studied the fossilised eggs, the team, led by Professor Robert Reisz of the University of Toronto Mississauga in Canada, discovered that the embryos were the oldest ones ever found of any land-dwelling vertebrate. "This project opens an exciting window into the early history and evolution of dinosaurs," said Professor Reisz. "Prosauropods are the first dinosaurs to diversify extensively, and they quickly became the most widely spread group, so their biology is particularly interesting as they represent in many ways the dawn of the age of dinosaurs.........."
