The last posting here by me was 01/08/2011.
It is today, 23/01/2012 - The beginning of the Year of The Dragon
I have taken the decision to restart the blog postings very regularly.
This is on account of a comment made by Alina of RA Foundation on my Aftermath posting.
See below.
Also, I have now been teaching adults Law & Language for over three months and the singular earthmoving joy I have experienced when I finally succeed in explaining the complicated law in simple everyday language to the adults and to see on their faces the knowledge being accepted, convinced me to restart this blog.

The Revival of Hope

Tomorrow is 01/08/11

It has been approximately 54 years since we pulled ourselves away &
out of the some what subtle & greedy clutches of The British Colonial Office.
Today is further the beginning of the RAMADHAN month for the Muslims of this country.

For almost two {2} years ,
this blogger walked the high ways & bye ways of The Net ,
attempting to reconcile all that or least seemed to be going wrong with our BUMI.
Hope diminished so rapidly that
there was a decision to shut down this blog , born in 2007 , after some five years.

Then the month of July witnessed such a moving evolution of our BUMI ,
that hope sprang as the fresh water springs from the Mountains opened up simultaneously.
The Ra’ayat linked hands , firmly but surely and
with the blessings of The Universe brought forth such unity,
such belief ,
such caring that
all of the foundations of our BUMI rocked at the highest point of the RECTOR scale.

Thank you, good people of Malaysia
for showing us, especially the disheartened that
we are still and forever will be the most powerful ,
caring ,
daring ,
courageous raya’at.
Thank you , good people of Malaysia
for restoring in the disheartened
the faith we used to have in our BUMI not so long ago.

To those who try & are still trying to “contain” ,
as The Scribe has said THE TIMES ARE A CHANGING!

I am no musician ,
nor poet ,
nor writer ,
nor politician
I have withdrawn from public life to the quietness & calm of the Hills.

I can only give you this video which was sent to me sometime ago by a dear net friend.

Hi All,

Decided to write one general letter about events here instead of trying to write individual letters. Firstly want to thank all of you for your concerns through texts and emails. My phone was down as had no power and had turned my cellphone off as it had very little juice left.

Was home on the day due to overnight rain that had left our jobs too wet to asphalt and was about to wander down the mall for a few bits when the quake hit. Came out of nowhere with no warning and was left hanging onto the kitchen bench watching the pantry doors fly open and everything crash to the floor. Cabinets and TV fell over and books were flying out of the wall unit. Am sure I yelled out "Don't smash my bloody beer!" (most survived). Went outside to console two elderly neighbours and check in their units. When I came out the street was flooded with grey water surging out of the ground. Fortunately, when the water subsided it left only a residue of the silt that is everywhere in some streets.

Cleaned up the mess here and helped next door. One elderly lady's family is in Auckland, so that evening invited her here, put her on the sofa with a warm blanket, and talked through the night as aftershocks were rattling the place every ten to twenty minutes. Many say the quake was about a minute but I can only recall about 10 seconds of it that was so violent that I thought it was the end of this place. But no, checked all around and things are good, all doors and windows opening just fine.

The centre of the quake saw the destruction come through the eastern suburbs and city and surrounds. Suburbs further out around the rest of the compass are virtually untouched. People out there tell you the September quake was stronger but us in the Eastern suburbs disagree. It was incredibly violent through here.

Had no power and water till Sunday when the power came on, but still no water. So was living like a caveman with my candle, but luckily next door has a hose out to the footpath from an artesian spring and the water is good. Once power was on was able to boil water and do the few remaining unbroken dishes and some hand washing. Neighbours all round have moved away for a while so have been alone around here for a while. Suits me, but sometimes feel a bit jittery when going to bed as I feel a shake is due and if it comes, feel almost relieved and can go to sleep!

Work has seen me filling holes with asphalt at first, then one day with a loader moving silt off the streets, but then put me with a chip sealing gang. We go to sites where the road has been re-levelled and lay a temporary surface of bitumen and chip. One job Sunday was opening a four lane road crossing a bridge. The road had sunk a metre or so below the bridge each side so you stood on the road and the bridge was waist high in front of you. They buillt up ramps on to the bridge to open the road Monday.

The silt is everywhere and heavy to shovel when wet. But it dries in the sun then blows about like a fine talcum powder coating everything. Have heard that it contains nutrients, so if any of you keen gardeners would like 200,000 tons of it to mix into the soil, I am sure we can do a deal! The company I work for has been outstanding. Issued me battery for my torch at home, give us food packs every day, have shipping container showers in the compound (luxury) and had us innoculated against hepatitis. Have been using the porta-loos at work and get to work a lot earlier than I used to!!

Won't say much about the damage as you have all seen more on the TV than I have. Many roads are smashed up bad and cause traffic gridlocks through the detours. As the major thoroughfares open, am hoping the work load will ease a little. Come across blocks of shops, churches and homes that are smashed apart and it is quite a numbing sight. A lady I knew and used to go dancing with was known to be at the CTV building that pancake collapsed, so I know one person who is not going home.

Working long hours and with no power left me concentrating on life in the 'cave' and was somewhat distant from the emotional reporting on TV. Stood the telly up last night and it works fine, in fact I think the picture has improved! Watched for the first time interviews and pictures from the central city and worse affected areas. While watching I realised that I still have a job, my place is undamaged, the street has not silt through it, am in good physical and mental health and have no family or children to worry about. In the midst of it all, I got it real easy compared with many.

OK folks, need some sleep as another big day coming up. So much for cruising through my last year before retirement! I am fine and looking forward to things being normal again and having those simple home conveniences we take for granted. Got a feeling the earthquake sequence not over yet - hope I am wrong.
