I can still vividly remember that day when I first met my husband’s parents. I was as nervous as a teenager handing his Kroger job application to the boss of the leader in the grocery store industry. I was well aware that that initial meeting would either pave the way to a smooth relationship between myself and his family or spell disaster in its worst imaginable form.

First impressions last. They do. So, when meeting someone for the first time, we should always put our best foot forward without looking too contrived. Your natural self should still shine through.

When meeting your potential in-laws, look fashionable yet comfy and decent. This is hardly the time to show off that cleavage. Don’t wear those low-rise jeans. You can put on a simple shirt, with a flattering necklace to add some flair without looking overdone. Downplay the makeup.

Other than your looks, do pay attention to how you conduct yourself in front of them. When engaged in conversation, be natural, but also be on guard. Try not to speak ill of anyone. Keep the green jokes in the back burner this time.

Remember that your man is introducing you to his folks because he believes that you are worth the time and effort. Be confident with who you are, because it’s those very qualities which have endeared you to your man in the first place.
