It's been quite some time since I've been actively geocaching, or actively posting to this blog. Both of those things change NOW! With my Garmin eTrex 20 in hand and 2 kids that have struck more of an interest in caching, we're ready to start logging some serious finds. If you look back at the older posts on here you'll see that I had all my gear stolen in 2012. Since then I found a few caches in 2013, NO caches in 2014, and up until about a week ago none for 2015. Why? I don't have a good answer. At first it was because I didn't have a GPS, and you know how sometimes you just fall out of a habit, well that's what happened I guess.

I've been busy this past week however logging about 10 finds, placing a new cache, and performing maintenance on another of my caches. As a family we enjoy the walks and the thrill of the hunt. The kids also like to get the little trinkets and other "geo-swag" we sometimes I find. Myself, I like finding trackables, and signature items. In fact I'm planning to start making my very own signature items to place into caches from hence forth. So if you are doing any Geocaching in New England, you just might find some of my stuff. Especially if you are anywhere near the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Dirty Thieves

First of all, WOW! It has been a while since I've dedicated any of my spare time to posting on this blog. I apologize to any of my subscribers, but mostly I apologize to myself because that means I'm working to hard. Anyway, on to the real reason for this post.

I'm on a geocaching hiatus, or vacation if you will. Not by choice either! I keep most of my geocaching supplies in a nice hiking backpack so I don't have to hunt around for things. Well that backpack was on the back seat of my Jeep for a couple of weeks. One night, somebody decided to make off with the aforementioned backpack. Contained within was my GPS (yep!), a Schrade multi-tool, various swag items, some pens, paper, and other supplies. I also had my Geo-Dog Tag attached to the zipper which was tracking my progress. Luckily I didn't have anyone elses trackables in the bag or I would have felt really bad.

The total value of what was lost was probably only $150 or so but it really sucks! I don't have the extra denero to buy a new GPS right now so I guess I'll just have to save up my pennies so I can buy that eTrex 20 that I've been eyeballing for a while now.

On the upside, this will give me some time to work on my new project - JBMotorcycle.com. Along with Geocaching, one of my other main hobbies is riding my dirt bike. Sometimes I even combine the two! I really love motorcycles and everything that has to do with them, so this prompted me to start a website on the topic. I hope to share some of my knowledge, experience, and anything new that I learn with the wonderful people on the internet! If you have a few spare minutes, check it out! X-mas is almost upon us!

Christmas is fast approaching and much of my time has been dedicated to finding decent gifts for the wife and kids. That coupled with the cold weather we've been having has certainly slowed me down in terms of geocaching. I'm hoping to pick things back up after X-mas though and do some winter caching.

What exactly am I hoping Santa brings me?

An Exciting Week in Geocaching for Me

Greetings everyone! I have had a somewhat exciting week in Geocaching with a few firsts for me. On monday of this week I had a first find of this particular sometimes overused hide. It was a skirt hide, or Lamp Post Cache as some may call it. Quite a typical hide of its type but it was the first one I had ever done. Lucky for me there aren't an over abundance of these in the area or I might have rolled my eyes as I pulled into Ground Zero.

Cemetery Caches: Cool or Creepy?

Made the trip an hour south today to go grocery shopping as we usually do twice a month. We save a great deal of money over our local grocery store so it makes it worth the drive. Another great thing about driving an hour south is the opportunity to hit a couple of Geocaches that are a bit further from home. Today was no different. I ran a quick pocket query to find caches along the route only looking about 1 mile on either side of Interstate 93. I spotted a cache near Exit 23 that was located in a cemetery. I had just completed a bookmark list of cemetery caches in New Hampshire a few days ago so I thought I'd go ahead and check one of them off by going after this cache.

Safety for Fall Caching

Geocaching in the Fall can be hazardous to your health, especially if you venture into popular hunting areas. There are a few precautions that you can take to stay safe and enjoy caching in the fall. The single most important thing about caching during hunting season is to wear Blaze Orange. I would recommend at least an orange hat like the one pictured below. Adding a vest to your ensemble makes you that much more visible.

A little bit of research can help you stay safe as well. Many people who don't hunt have no idea when hunting seasons start and ends. Knowing what seasons are open and when will key you in on when you should be wearing your blaze orange attire. Most states have a booklet of some type at the local hunting store, or even Wal-mart that will list these dates. Alternatively this website contains the webpages for the wildlife agencies of each state.

I've decided to jump into the Blogging community. I've long resisted the Blogging movement, I think mostly because the word itself was unappealing to me. Blog, what a strange word. However, I'm older and wiser now and realize blogging can be fun, and it's a great way to give back to the hobbies, sports, or communities you are involved in. The purpose of this blog is to give back to the Geocaching community. I'm relatively new to this hobby only having about 2 months of "caching" under my belt but I feel strongly about this hobby. It's a great way to get out and do something. It's too easy to fall into a routine of work, eat, sleep. Geocaching is about getting out and enjoying the adventure, whatever it may be. You can choose how easy or hard to make it, or how long you want it to take. So join me in enjoying the outdoors and the hunt for The Pirate's Booty!
