On Monday afternoon, Celtics President of Basketball Operations met with media. Appearing to have spent the past 7 days listening to early Counting Crows records, Ainge sulked his way through roughly twenty minutes of questions about the trade that sent Doc Rivers to the Los Angeles Clippers. Making it quite clear that he was dissappointed in Doc Rivers’ decision to walk away, 2 years after he signed a handsome 5 year extension that seemingly meant the coach would maintain the reigns throughout Boston’s rebuild effort.

And to a degree, Ainge has the right to be upset. But he’s also smart enough to understand the hypocricy of his anger.

In an interview with Bill Simmons this past April, Larry Bird spoke about loyalty – specifically Red Auerbach’s refusal to break up the original Big 3. According to Bird, Auerbach refused offers that could’ve potentially sparked a rebuilding effort out of loyalty: Larry had given his back to the Celtics, McHale his foot and knee. They had worked too hard, and had given too much to be thrown aside in the name of ‘business.’

He might not have sacrificed the health of his body to the degree of his Celtic bretherens, but Paul Pierce has given fifteen quality years to this organization. If you want to speak about loyalty of your employees you have to show an ounce of it: And desperately trying to trade a player whose given a decade and half of his life to this team to the Clevelands and Atlantas of the world (for Josh Smith nonetheless) isn’t accomplishing that.

If Ainge wants a level of ‘loyalty’ within the organization, he has to ocasionally step out of his ‘strictly business’ bubble and do what’s right, and this is certainly is his chance to do so:

Approach Paul Pierce and ask him what he’d like the Celtics do, or come to expect the turnstyle approach that has led to the departure of Ray Allen and Doc Rivers to continue. You can’t have it both ways.

To many, the recent war of words between Kanye West & Justin Timberlake may seem completely random. To others, including the people at Buzzfeed it’s a middle school battle of the besties – who is REALLY Hov’s BFF? Each example as wrong as the other. Because the Timberlake-West beef is not random, nor completely juvenille – it’s a heavyweight title match nearly a decade in the making.

To catch the uninformed up: Kanye West made headlines in late February by saying “I got love for Hov, but I’m not fucking with that Suit & Tie,’ amongst other things during a mid-show rant. Timberlake then returned fire on ‘Saturday Night Live’ during a performance of said-song by replacing the line ‘Shit’s so sick, got a hit and picked up a habit’ with ‘My hit’s so sick got rappers acting dramatic.’

The source of the beef (bravado) can really be best explained by this quote taken from a 2007 interview Kanye West did with XXL magazine.

“My biggest inspiration and biggest competition is Justin Timberlake,” the 29-year-old rapper tells XXL magazine in its October issue, on newsstands Sept. 11. “He’s the only other person that gets an across-the-board response and respect level — black radio, white radio.”

“If Justin hadn’t come out and killed the game, I can’t say that my album, singles and videos would be on the same level that they’re on,” he says.

“We push each other. I look at me and Justin like Prince and Michael Jackson in their day.”

To this point West’s career has been more Jordan than Jackson when it comes to Mikes. After Magic Johnson retired, Chicago’s Michael Jordan found himself unrivaled – perhaps his most worthy adversary was on his own team (though a clear second best) – chomping at the bit for an opponent to say or do something that he could use as ammunition to bring his game to the next level. It was something he HAD to do because while the Barkleys and the Malones of the world were good, they weren’t truly worthy adversaries. West entered his prime when FutureSexLoveSounds was dominating the radio. He stayed and kept making great albums, Timberlake left to make movies. In the interim other pop and rap acts have come and gone, but West stayed unrivaled at the top, unquestionably levels above his closest competition.

Which is why it’s funny – and perhaps not that far fetched – to mentally picture Kanye West in a dark high rise like the Die Hard villain he’s cast himself to be, receiving the present he’s both most feared and desired.

Because Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience is every bit of the masterpiece that West’s My Dark Twisted Fantasy was. A top to bottom instant classic that’ll unquestionably find itself #1 on the majority of ‘Best Album of the Year’ lists come year end.

And it’ll be well deserved. Because again, much like West’s 2010 efforts, The 20/20 Experience is a great record. Not a compilation of songs with radio friendly hits dispersed evenly, but a piece of music that commands that you sit down and listen to it from it’s first second to it’s last. Sure, there’s stand out tracks – but they stand out in the context of the album. Suit & Tie wasn’t meant to be a radio single, it was meant to be the second song on a great record.

Timberlake weaves his way throughout the album like a modern-day Al Green opening the gates to his own personal, sexualized Chocolate Factory. A look into a world that we envy and enjoy, even if we don’t 100% completely understand. Happy, poppy bookmarks with a surprisingly unpredictable, and even occasionally dark, tunnel of terror like middle.

And it’s the completion of a masterpiece that leads us to where we are today: With any doubts about musical staying-power removed, Timberlake stands strong as the adversary West at least claimed he’s always wanted: The Frazier to his Ali. The Superman to his Batman. The Jackson to his Prince.

I’m not sure who makes the next move or when it happens, but I look forward to it. Til then, I’ve got another couple hundred listens of The 20/20 Experience in me.

The Monday after it was announced that Rajon Rondo would require season ending surgery on his ACL I didn’t feel the need to write anything. Wasn’t really a reason for it. Twitter covered the initial, perhaps overdramatic reaction and a day later it seemed like every other angle was covered in local papers and blogs. But after the Celtics went on a predictable four game win-streak Celtic Nation seems more divided than ever on the value of their all-star Point Guard.

Bill Simmons once wrote that rooting for Rondo was like owning a cat stating that he “disappears, you can’t count on him, you can’t figure him out…” Funny, but not entirely accurate. Because after watching Rondo helm the reigns of my favorite team I don’t think it’s all that difficult to figure out ‘the league’s most mysterious man.’

Rajon Rondo’s brain is both his gift and his curse. He sees things on the court – particularly in transition – that no one else can. He pays an incredible amount of attention to the importance of delivering passes both on target and in rhythm. And while he’s known around the league as a poor shooter; when he’s forced to shoot, or when he steps into a shot confidently he’s quite talented. Likewise, when he has too much time to think about a shot, or is dared to do so he can often look about as bad as a middle school girl shooting the ball for the first time. If you were to watch a tape of only the release of his jump shots you’d probably be able to guess every one that went in based on the fluidity of the release.

Likewise, it comes as no coincidence that 20 of his career 27 career triple doubles have come on national television – he’s painfully aware that at 6’1, 170 pounds* he simply can’t take the kind of contact, or use up the kind of energy he does when the light shines the brightest 82 games a year. Which is why he’s so beloved nationally, while being so polarizing locally. He’s the Senator’s Wife – perfect when the lights are on, unwilling to abandon her sweatpants every other night: That’s why you’ll hear cries that this team is better without Rondo in a four game winning streak that include wins over the Kings, Magic and Chris Paul-less Clippers (games Rondo likely would metaphorically ‘no-show’) but not when he’s averaging nearly 21 points, 11 assists, 7 rebounds and 2 steals in a seven game series against the eventual NBA Champion Miami Heat.

Now I don’t mean to say that to completely discount the Celtics current winning streak by any means. Nor to suggest that they don’t have a puncher’s chance in this season’s playoffs. Because it has been impressive, and in this Eastern Conference they certainly do. And while the Celtics aren’t necessarily better without Rondo, the offensive sets they’re running without him are. And these things don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

When the current Rondo-less Celtics offense is clicking in the half court – and not incessantly being run through isolation plays for Paul Pierce – the sets are being run through Kevin Garnett. Garnett, is a gift from the NBA playbook gods. He’s seven feet tall, his mid range game is flawless. He’s an incredible passer for his size. He’s an excellent finisher at the rim, and he’s been painfully underutilized over the past few years.

Watch the video below (it should start at 1:15, but if doesn’t you’ll have to skip forward to it):

Courtney Lee brings up the ball and finds Garnett in the high post. Since Garnett is a capable shooter his man has to stay close to him, while also respecting his ability to drive. From the wing Pierce utilizes a Lee screen and then goes behind Garnett to use his body as a screen.

Pierce then reuses Garnett as a screener and drives. Bringing his man with him as well as Garnett’s.

Correctly, Pierce then passes back to Garnett. Since, despite his size, Garnett is a premiere shooter from midrange the Clippers need to bring weak side help leaving Jason Terry open.

Unfortunately, Garnett’s pass gets slightly tipped. Had it not Terry would’ve been able to either shoot the 3, or pass off to Bass (top corner) if his man charged. The tip of the pass allows the Clippers to momentarily reset their defense, though not for long as quickly Garnett sets a pick to free up Pierce towards the center of the court.

Garnett, able to set a full (and maybe slightly illegal) screen means that his man is forced to either abandon Garnett or let Pierce shoot an uncontested, sixteen foot, Paul Pierce special.

Jordan opts to defend Pierce, which leaves Garnett open for an easy lay-in. Even if Blake Griffin (closest to Garnett) had rotated to the center faster, Brandon Bass (again, top corner) for a wide open midrange jumper.

This is a highlight, but this is the kind of things using KG brings – Seventeen seconds, three Garnett screens that aid in maximizing the skill set of Paul Pierce, Jason Terry and Brandon Bass. That’s how you run a great offense.

The key is that the ball doesn’t start in Rondo’s hands and end in it. Forcing four other guys to watch, hoping to get a chance to catch and shoot. That’s what they’ve been doing for the greater portion of the first half of this season – Not really effective on nights when Rondo’s engaged, painful on nights he wasn’t.

Rajon Rondo is more than capable of running this kind of offense. The Spurs have run sets like this for years, and Tony Parker has never been a good 3 point shooter either (career .314). Because while Rondo can’t stand in the corner like Lee does, he could make a stronger challenge at the beginning of the play (Lee pretty passively brings up the ball, never a real threat to attack), hit an open midrange shot off the ball (despite his reputation, this shot chart clearly shows that Rondo’s midrange game has drastically improved to an above average level), or cut without the ball.

The good news is what I’ve already said. Rondo is a student of the game, and a fierce competitor. I think he sees these things, absorbs it, and uses it when he comes back. Now, if he only had a good deer antler-spray guy…

——-

* I’m guilty of it myself – but I think not enough is said about that. People want him to dominate like a Lebron or a Durant every night. Put aside the fact that he’s not a particularly great free throw shooter, I just don’t think his body can withstand getting to the free throw line 4 or 5 times a game over the course of 82 games.

Introducing the grand daddy of all Power Hours. Mostly because there really isn’t any others on the internet…

Youtube limits non “director users” to well below 60, and a search of ‘Power Hour’ on DailyMotion results in a lot of early 1990’s WCW matches. So, yes, I think I’m ready to declare this as without a shadowofadoubt the greatest Power Hour of all time.

It’s an assembly of viral videos for sixty minutes. Or fifty nine minutes and thirty seven seconds to be exact. If you need an extra thirty seconds you can watch this video that got cut at the last second.

I did the best I could of picking videos that not EVERYONE in the world has seen while incorporating a handfull of classics. But to be fair, for all I know all these might be classics at this point. I’m 29 years old, I legally can’t watch Tosh.0 anymore.

You’ll figure the flow out quickly – Some videos aren’t a minute. Some videos will have multiple drinks in it. Some will be fifteen seconds. Deal with it. It’s not rocket science – if you see a number on the screen drink. Or not. Heck, it’s a bunch of really funny videos you can use to kill an hour.

I’ve got to give credit to Videogum. A fantastic site that I’ve frequented half a billion times over the past three years. I’d guess about 90% of these videos have been brought to my attention through the brilliant people there.

Jimmy Buffet has made a career off of being a terrible musician whose capitalized on the brilliant idea that drinking in a social setting is fun. So maybe I can net a free beer, and a few extra clicks out of this.

Editor’s note: I know XboxLive has a daily motion app, and I’d have to believe the Playstation Network does as well. So this is pretty easy to put on a television

EDITOR’S NOTE: Sorry about the formatting on this, I know it can be a little rough. I’m no html wizard, and sometimes when you go in and out of preset formats things can go a little haywire.

Also, sorry all the quotes are yelling at you. Pretend that we’re your usual NFL guys trying to make a point.

On his January 8th podcast The B.S Report Bill Simmons and guest Jalen Rose drafted a hypothetical 9 on 9 ‘One Game For a Billion Dollars” to determine the best current players, and to figure out how valuable of a player Dwight Howard is today. I disagreed, pretty thoroughly disagreed with a lot of the picks and one particular omission. So I decided to dial up Bob Sacramano, replicate the exercise and see how it goes. Please vote at the end.

So without further adieu, The Billion Dollar Game

Bob Sacramano – Monstars

SELECT: LEBRON JAMES

“With the first pick, I’m taking the obvious selection here in LeBron James. He is the best player in the NBA (the world actually. I’d go Universe but I’ve seen Space Jam and there are some really good Alien Hoops players out there). He plays hard, and after Game 6 of last year’s Eastern Conference Championship game, he finally got the “Look”. You know that look that says in no uncertain terms are we losing this game. He can guard 4 positions on D and can handle the ball on Offense. The easiest pick in this entire exercise.”

Current Roster: Lebron James

Up Next with two picks…

MattDotRich – Toon Squad

SELECT: Kevin Durant & Chris Paul

“Second best player in the universe. The guy is built for this game: One of the complaints I have about Durant is that I think he can be a little passive, and he doesn’t move particularly well without the ball. In this game, those are perfect characteristics. Whether he be the guy that drives to the hoop to create, the guy whose catching the ball in the corner for an easy 3, or at 6’9 with a 9’5 foot wingspan he could even see some time at the 4 – Durant’s a perfect player for the format.”

“The original dream team would’ve killed for a point guard like this – Killer mean streak, great defender, pure leader, not a prick, not homophobic, probably won’t get sued in a multi million dollar sexual harassment law suit years down the line. Seriously though, Chris Paul is easily the best point guard in the league. He perfectly balances keeping his team involved, and asserting himself as a go-to scorer when the team needs it. That’s something few point guards in this league can do, and those who can, won’t.”

Current Roster: Kevin Durant, Chris Paul

for the rest of the way picks will be one and one

Bob Sacramano – Monstars

SELECT: Carmelo Anthony

“The first difficult pick. The NBA has a clear top of the Class with LBJ, Durant, and Paul. When discussing the draft order with MattDotRich, the question wasn’t do you want first pick, it was do you want LeBron or Durant/Paul. So why did I decide on Carmelo Anthony? 1) I am not fan of Kobe Bryant. He plays hard but I don’t need that head case on my team. 2) My opponent took the guy that scores the easiest in the NBA in Durant. I had to take the second guy in Melo. Inside/Outside, Melo can put the ball in the hoop. Also, I hope to be able to draft some back line guy that can protect the fact that Melo can’t guard the chair that I am sitting in (even if he has greatly improved). Plus, allegedly his wife tastes like Honey Nut Cheerios. I can get behind that.”

Current Roster: Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony

MattDotRich – Toon Squad

SELECT: Kevin Garnett

“Ha. If you pick Melo I’ve gotta go Garnett. If I can open the curtains to Oz for a moment – this is the reason this article is being done. Somehow, Garnett wasn’t selected in a similar format in a draft done by ESPN’s Bill Simmons and Jalen Rose.

There might be more ‘talented’ players available, but Garnett provides a unique skill set. Can play the 4 or the 5. Play in the post or in mid range. He’s still the best pick and roll defender in the game. And if I’m playing ONE game for a million dollars, I want a guy who gets so hyped up for the NBA finals that he doesn’t sleep.

Plus, one killer line at Melo and we’ll be looking Iso Melo for 48 again.”

Current Roster: Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Kevin Garnett

Bob Sacramano – Monstars

SELECT: Russell Westbrook

“KG was my next pick if you didn’t take him. You’re rationale is the exact reason why I wanted him.

There are three people in the league that make my mouth drop with athleticism nearly once a game: LeBron, Eric Bledsoe, and Russell Westbrook. He is the most athletic guard in the NBA. He can get from one end to the other faster then anyone else with the ball in his hands. Also, he has been playing as a second banana for his entire career and in a game where you need people to give up their superstar status for the good of the team for one game, Westbrook is the guy to go with.”

Current Roster: Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James

MattDotRich – Toon Squad

SELECT: Dwight Howard

“It’s not fun to pick Dwight Howard. He’s a dick. He doesn’t seem to care enough about winning. He wears entirely too much NBA merch. Seriously, entirely too much. Full sleeve arm bands or headband. You can’t do them both. And that’s coming from a guy who wears these on the court.

Still, he is who he is. Defensively, he’s a hybrid of 2 other guys I was considering here (no, I’m not telling): He’s still an incredibly quick defender for a big man, while maintaining a wider frame to counter any wide bodies you may end up picking down the line. Offensively, he’s kind of the bigman version of Durant: I like the idea of having a guy who can score 20+ without having specific plays called to get him involved.

The way you beat Lebron is by having height, or one of your players has sex with his mother. Maybe this is my way of covering both of my bases? Guys got a good smile”

Current Roster: Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul

SELECT: Zach Randolph

Thank you for taking the man that had a major back surgery in the last 12 months. Saved me from having to take him 3 picks down the line.

(Preface: I am irrational when it comes to Z-Bo) Its the end of the game. My team needs an easy offensive possession. What is an easier offensive possession then giving the ball to the best low post offensive player in the league? Also, I can go small and play Z-Bo at the 5, with LeBron at the 4, and Melo at the 3. A legitimate 20-10 guy, that when push comes to shove is going to be there.

He has matured over the years from the guy that once had this said about him “I just don’t want the day to come where I pick up that paper and it says [Zach] shot someone, or that he was shot. Every day that goes by that I don’t see that, I feel good.” – Moe Smedley, Z-Bo’s High School Coach.

SELECT: Black Mamba

“Well, I know this is a draft between two Boston guys but c’mon. What more can I say? #mambatweets”

SELECT: Dwyane Wade

“Touche Sir. I had Kobe all tee’d up and ready to go. We’re talking about a top 10 NBA player of all time, and would have fit in perfect as a Two on my team.

I want warriors on my team. I want guys that have my back. I want a two time NBA champion that at this point has settled in quite nicely as the second banana on a NBA Championship team. A guy that is battle tested and can take over a game if you need him, but can defer and will be the Robin to LeBron’s Batman. He can handle the ball and fits in nicely with the slash and kick offense I am trying to get going here.”

Current Roster: Dwyane Wade, Zach Randolph, Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James

MattDotRich – Toon Squad

SELECT: Andre Iguodala

By “guys that’ll have your back” did you mean “guys who will knee opposing players in the groin”? Happy you took the guy, because I didn’t want to.

Here’s where I reveal myself as 2 things:

1. A Huge chemistry guy

2. Irrational Andre Iguodala supporter

On one hand it might be a little early for AI, I’m wondering if you would even consider him in this draft. On the other hand, I couldn’t miss out on having him. He’s a poor man’s Scottie Pippen: An incredible perimeter defender capable of covering both the 2 and the 3, a terrific passer, and a guy whose shown to be a pretty intelligent slasher when he’s not burdened to run an offense like he did in Philadelphia.

Also, he’s key to allowing me to go to a smaller CP3, Mamba, Iggy, Durant, Garnett lineup – or as I call them, “Flex & Pecks”

Current Roster: Andre Iguodala, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul

SELECT: Steph Curry

“Knee another guy in the groin? Total Accident. When AI makes it out of the second round of the playoffs, maybe I would consider him for this team. Not on my big board at all.

Looking at my team, I needed a shooter and a distributor. Steph Curry fills both of those roles. I live out here in San Francisco so the local team is the Warriors. I see an inordinate amount of their games and when his ankles are healthy he is a top 15 player in the NBA. He is a dead eye shooter and is a great ball distributor. I can bring him off the bench or start him. Also he is not a head case at all.”

Current Roster: Steph Curry, Dwyane Wade, Zach Randolph, Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James

MattDotRich – Toon Squad

SELECT: Dirk Nowitzki

“You’re going to knock my AI pick for him not winning then you’re going to select Steph Curry. What’s the old saying – those who have glass ankles shouldn’t throw stones? I think that’s it. How’s it going, San Francisco? MattDotRich, nice to meet ya.

Lebron’s run in the playoffs last year was rightfully heralded as remarkable. What he did from Game 6 in the Eastern Conference Finals on was incredible. What Dirk Nowitzki did for an ENTIRE playoff run the year before was on par with it. The guy was incredible, and an absolute thrill to watch. Just absolutely brilliant from the high post.

You say he’s on the decline, I say he’s shooting .390 from behind the 3 point line, and maybe a little cautious of how much he wants to exert his body until ‘the Bank of Cuban’ brings a contender around him again. Zee German will rise again.”

Current Roster: Dirk Nowitzki, Andre Iguodala, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul

SELECT: Tyson Chandler

“You’re comparing 3 injured seasons of Curry (playing with Monta Ellis, one of the biggest ball stoppers of all time) to 8 of AI? If you went with the fact that he had an Olympic Gold Medal I would given you a tip of the cap in comparing the two. On the other hand, Dirk is the right pick there. I had him on the big board for later.

Olympic Gold Medalist? Check. NBA Champion? Check. Defensive Player of the Year? Check. This pick makes up for the lack of rim protection that I had with my first 6 picks. Also, I now have a guy that can be on the floor and not need the ball in his hands for any of it other then to catch lobs. Also, the dude doesn’t take bad shots when he gets the ball. He is the career FG percentage leader. Plus, he just looks like a guy I would want to have a beer with. I have no explanation for that, but I just have that feeling he is a good guy.”

Current Roster: Tyson Chandler, Steph Curry, Dwyane Wade, Zach Randolph, Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James

MattDotRich – Toon Squad

SELECT: Kyrie Irving

“Charles Barkley never won a championship either, doesn’t mean he wasn’t one of the best power forwards of all time. Iguodala has spent 8 years with a terrible cast, I don’t blame him for his team’s lack of success.

Was wondering when you were going to take Chandler. Almost forced my hand to take another center.

Just had to have him. Had to. The guy’s a videogame. Can get anywhere he wants to on the court, while doing anything he’d like with the ball. He’s a guy who can do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ioIReFbQ_o . And for those of you who are at work and can’t watch a video, here’s what happens in an olympic exhibition: Irving puts the ball behind his back to get past Kobe, then immediately crosses up Kobe Bryant, takes two steps than spins around James Harden, then puts the ball behind his back and between legs after Kobe comes back into the picture.

This guys a stud whose being wasted on a team without talent. 23.3 points, 5.6 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.8 steals a game while shooting .405 from behind the 3 point line.”

Current Roster: Kyrie Irving, Dirk Nowitzki, Andre Iguodala, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul

“Its guys like Kyrie I feel bad for (as bad as you can for a guy getting paid $5m to play a game). He is a stud of a player just being wasted. One thing though, Kyrie Irving has never played a big game in his career. Injured at Duke and just a strike shortened season during his first year. I don’t know if he could handle this game.

I need a dynamic player that can come off the bench and score buckets. We know that James Harden can do this as well as anybody in the NBA. Think about this for a second. He was selected to the Dream Team 2012 having come off the bench the previous season. Yes, I know he kind of disappeared in the NBA finals but the dude can play. Since taking over a staring role in Houston he has been money. Near 25 ppg and getting to the line roughly 10 times a game from a guard spot. Plus I added that fantastic beard to my team. (Note: I’ve had the same beard for 10 years, I’m probably biased on this front.)

Last Pick time. Plug any holes you have on your team. And looking at it, you have plenty.”

Hello New England,

Hi, my name is MattDotRich. Chilly up here isn’t it? See, I was going to leave a DELIGHTFUL post today about a hypothetical 1 Billion Dollar NBA game and who I and Bob Sacramano would have on our teams and why, but I’m forced instead to come here to talk you off this proverbial ledge. Now, know that I’m a fellow Bostonian; I’m writing this from an apartment on the Medford/Somerville line thats decor consists almost exclusively of Boston sports memorabilia and has a floor that desperately needs to swept, so know this comes from a place of love, but… sit down and shut up.

Because I can’t stand to watch what was once a proud and loyal fan base come off as the brat who for the first time in 15 years didn’t get exactly what they wanted for Christmas. The Power Wheel is in the garage, top videogame console and all the best games are in the living room, the furby, tickle me elmo, and every other hot toy there ever was is in the den. This year you might not have gotten THE toy, but at some point you have to be grateful for what you have.

Yes, I understand that getting smacked around by the Ravens, an unjustifiable 9.5 point underdog, absolutely sucked. That watching a fraud like Ray Lewis point to the sky or pound the ground for a thousandth time wasn’t fun. Just as it wasn’t fun watching Mario Manningham do the same last year. Just as it isn’t fun watching a decrepit Celtics team seem to give up hope as they continue to get older. Just as missing out on a half a season of Bruins hockey probably wasn’t fun for people who are into that kinda thing (Sorry, I’m not. I checked out of Ice Hockey once it got past picking between the fat and skinny guys).

But at some point you have to show some gratitude for what you have, and where you’ve been. At 29, I’ve seen more success by my local sports teams than most men three times my age. I’ve nearly pushed a friend over a second floor barrier at a bar in excitement over watching Tony Allen throw down a reverse dunk to put the Celtics up FORTY ONE points in a deciding NBA Finals over the team’s most storied rival*. I’ve listened to ‘My Hero’ by the Foo Fighters 32 times on loop because I knew Tom Brady couldn’t win his first Super Bowl without me playing it. I’ve skipped school to see Lawyer Milloy hold the Lombardi trophy high while wearing the most ridiculous mink coat I’ll ever see. I’ve seen the Boston Red Sox rally to beat THEIR most storied rival in the most decorated comeback of all time. And I even had a grin on my face when my roommate – a die hard Yankee fan – knocked out our power by punching our switch box after Johnny Damon blasted a grandslam to put the Sox up 9 in the 4th.

I’ve high fived people because they looked as happy as me, hugged strangers because they were wearing the same shirt as I, and shimmied with a man because he was wearing an Antoine Walker jersey. I’ve gotten to watch one of, if not the greatest quarterbacks of all time helm my football team, while one of the greatest power forwards of all time anchored the defense for my basketball team. And I’ve seen the best right handed hitter of a generation bat before the absolute most clutch left handed batter. Absolute sports euphoria.

I don’t write this to suggest that these experiences are all that unique. I write them because if you’re reading this you’re a Boston Sports Fan (or a masochist, I guess) and you’ve had your own similar experiences. And you remember the pure unfiltered joy it brought to you.

And now what? You’re forced to watch a highly competitive football team lose in the AFC Championship? You had to endure a tough Game 7 loss against the eventual NBA Champion? You had to watch the Red Sox swing and miss on a few high priced free agents? You had to spend some time with your girlfriend while a game against the Washington Capitals was erased due to a labor dispute?

It could be a lot fucking worse. The only champion my family in Cleveland has seen in the past 60 years is The Miz. So while you complain about how Tom Brady is maybe past his prime you think about how Derek Anderson is the best quarterback they’ve seen in the past 20 years. Wikipedia him. Their best sports memories are assigning blame for who jinxed the Indians in the 97′ World Series, getting the team they had stolen from them back, and coming up with inventive ways to still drive people to their bars after their hometown boy announced that he’d be ‘taking his talents to South Beach.’ On their wedding anniversaries when they tell their wives their happiest moments were with her, they might actually mean it. Gross, right?

So enjoy what you have, and stop being a brat. It’s not a good look.

You’ve been to the top of everest, and you can still see it right now. Act like it.

——

*I also, as a 20 year old, shook my then 11 year old sister like a British nanny when Big Papi hit what I later learned to be a go-ahead double against the A’s. I say ‘later learned’ because once I saw that ball go over the right fielders head I just started to grab her shoulders and shake. I had assumed it was a homerun. What I’m getting at is that I might have a problem being physical while enjoying games.

The release of the first Justin Timberlake single in seven years is supposed to be the kind of thing that makes you feel good about going out to the store and spending a couple extra dollars than you intended on a new pair of head phones.

After all, this is something we’ve literally been asking for years. The return of one of the few “shared experience” artists going. The type of artist who makes music that my sister gets ready to go out to while also being the same artist whose song plays every time my friend scores a goal in NHL 12′.

There’s no secret behind the success of Justin Timberlake’s music; It’s fun to like it. With good music becoming increasingly harder to find, it was a breath of fresh air in 2006 for a commercially successful album backed by regular air play to be so… good.

And in the 2000’s, that’s unfortunately become a rarity – a universally appreciated album that everyone can enjoy. Top 40 rules the radio waves, and mostly play safe, bubblegum pop. Catchy songs get run into the ground and exposed for what they are. Great music is being made, you just need to subscribe to 6 podcasts, read 30 music blogs daily in order to know what to dig through google to find. FutureSexLoveSounds was an exception: Truly great, and readily available.

This is why we’ve been romanticizing his return to music – Why we’ve tolerated his extended absence. Why we pretend he’s funnier than he really is. Why we turn the other cheek to pretend like the movie In Time never actually happened. Because sharing the experience of good pop music is a heckuva lotta fun.

So ‘Suit & Tie,’ Timberlake’s single was supposed to be a big deal. And to be fair; it was treated that way. Predeceased by a promo video, and a countdown website that’d make Chris Jericho and the guys at the WWE proud. It was supposed to spit in the face of the Ke$ha’s of the world and remind us that good pop music does exist. Make us think that maybe our generation does have it’s Michael Jackson or at least it’s Prince.

Instead, we’re forced to be reminded that in a 10 year career as a solo artist, Justin Timberlake has roughly 1.5 good albums*.

To be clear, ‘Suit & Tie’ isn’t a bad song. It’s perfectly fine – the verses are pretty enjoyable, the beat sounds like it’d be perfect for an Outkast record. But the chorus is a little lazy, and the Jay Z verse is unquestionably forced.

But this was supposed to be a Justin Timberlake single. This was supposed to sound like ‘Sexy Back’, or ‘Cry Me A River’, or ‘My Love.’ Not track 11, the second best song to be released today, or a song to be used to introduce a new fragrance line.

Perhaps we don’t know Timberlake’s intentions with ‘Suit & Tie.’ Perhaps this isn’t truly a ‘single’ as much as it is an introduction on the type of sound to expect The 20/20 Experience (his album to be released at some point this year). Or perhaps it’s a song that won’t even make the record.

What we do know, unfortunately, is that the first Justin Timberlake song to be released in over half-a-decade, is just not that good. Now I’m here, with overpriced headphones, hoping what comes next will be.

——–

*Justified is an OK album, but outside the singles the album is fairly unlistenable.

The following post was written by Bob Sacramano

I live in San Francisco, California. Its 3,000 miles away from where my family and most of my friends from high school and college live back on the East Coast. This inevitably leads to me having to fly from California to Boston to see family for Holidays, come back for weddings, etc. I also abhor flying with the passion of Kevin Garnett when trash talking to Carmelo Anthony. My need to fly 3,000 miles to get home and my hatred of flying never mesh well, and as such, I become an incredibly grumpy person the day of and throughout my entire flight. Cut to the Saturday before Christmas 2012. Due to the over crowding nature of traveling around the Holidays I got stuck in a middle seat for a transcontinental Red Eye Flight with no other available seats. This would have been a bad enough flight based on the fact that I had to wedge my massive frame into a middle Coach Seat. However, sitting to my left was a woman who had a little wiener dog in her lap. I, trying to be nice and social (Trying to garner some good will as sitting next to me on a flight cannot be easy just on pure size reason), start talking to her and had a few questions about the dog.

One of my questions was, “Is it because she is small enough, you can put her in a case on the plane instead of having to Crate her in the belly of the plane?” Answer: “No. This is my emotional support dog. I have a note from my therapist that allows me to bring him on the plane and hold on to him the entire flight.” Slight problem at this point as this is a ridiculous statement. For the first 45 minutes of the flight I have no problem with the little guy just laying there. Now remember this is a red-eye flight. I would like to sleep and try and forget that I am on the plane. At three, repeat three, separate instances I was woken up the furry companion sitting next to me. The first two times, I felt a wet lick on my elbow. The third time, the little shit dog got loose from her sleeping owner, and walked on to my lap and started to nestle in.

What the hell America? Emotional Support Dog? What kind of horse shit is this? Freaking ridiculous. What if I was allergic to pet dander like say the 8% of the population that is? One freaking percent of the population is allergic is peanuts and I can’t have those on the plane! And where do we draw the line? I have a friend who is a Flight Attendant for Virgin America. She has told me that she has had Emotional Support Mini Ponies on the flights before. If I can get a doctor’s note saying I need an emotional support Bengal Tiger on the plane or I’ll just lose my shit, could United say anything about that to me?

And what about just the common decency of not having a dog on the plane licking and crawling on the people next to you? Yes, the girl was extremely apologetic about it every time but it shouldn’t happen at all.

Lets all be honest about why the dog was on the plane. To crate a dog for a flight costs between $200-$400. To have a dog fly in the main cabin as an emotional support dog costs $0. It’s a money saving device, pure and simple. And, yes, before I get all the hate mail I will say that I am not a dog person. I never had one growing up. However, I do enjoy the company of my girlfriend’s dog Maggie and my brother’s dog Holly. So, its not like I hate all dogs.

So congrats to the people that have found another way to beat the system and I’m going to continue you to hate you for it. Just be prepared for my Emotional Support Hawk…
