This is your last chance to regester for the June 7 class.

The �Nuts and Bolts of Podcasting� will cover everything you need to know to start podcasting. Recording, editing, hosting and Feeding. It is a hands on class, meaning you will learn as you do. Ideally, participants should have their own laptop, but we has a couple of ways around that.

The cost is $75 and their are only 8 spots available so email me and we can get you registered.

I have decided to pull all the old poddog shows from the feed. The shows are downloaded a lot each month but I’m not sure why, except maybe because of itunes “get all” button. Now bandwidth is not the problem, but I would rather redirect people to Atomic Suburbia.

Posting from an ipod touch

I really have not been playing with the touch all that much but I do enjoy it. I like watching Ask a Ninja when I have a spare 5 minutes. I bought a 10$ speaker and I love showing people the promotional video for a little non profit I volunteer with or when there is wifi searching youtube for videos by the Creative Monkeys and watch Doug’s face light up when we find one. But the best part is when I demonstrate the z
two finger zoom.

I posted from my blackberry when I got it so it only fair that I post from my new ipod touch. The typing is a bit slow but I think that that’s mostly do to getting used the touch screen. The is always a learning curve when learning a new way of inputting data. It was the same with my first handspring visor that used graffiti 1 to my palm TX that used graffiti 2 to my blackberry pearl that uses a two letter per key system. I am trying to thumb type rather than the one finger way and it seems to be working well.

I am glad I spent the money but it likely wont replace my 2G nano. The nano is a little more durable plus the touch won’t work with my tune talk. Granted, the only reason I could buy it was because I quit smoking. Go Me. And since the iphone will never come to canada I will be happy with it.

Shortly after PAB 07 I was approached by the lovely and amazingly talented Sage Tyrtle to be a guest on the Quirky Quiz, part of her wildly popular Quirky Nomads Podcast. I am not kidding when I say this was the single most exciting thing to happen to me since I got into podcasting. Sage has a fantastic show and the Quirky Quiz is a blast to listen to. Oh and to make it even better, I was on with Lord Blevis and Shelly. (Yes, just like Cher, and Bob, Shelly only needs one name.) I have a bit of social anxiety when it comes to things like Skype, and especially group chats but I pulled out my big boy microphone and jumped in. I’m glad I did because it was a lot of fun and the end result sounds pretty good. (Full disclosure, I haven’t listened as of this writing but I have heard from a reliable source that it’s great.)

Thanx Sage for the honor of joining you, Shelly and Mark. I had a blast.

Podcasting is pretty simple. You create a audio or video file, host it on the internet and use a piece of code call an RSS feed to point to it so that a Podcatcher like itunes can find it and automatically download it.

On November 3 you can find out just how easy it is and why you should be Podcasting. Chinook Learning Service is offering a “Spectacular Saturday” class called “Podcasting Made Easy“. The class will cover everything you need to know to start feeding your creative works to the world. From recording to hosting to blogging and RSS as well as dealing with aggregators like itunes and directories like Canada Podcasts and podCALGARY.

The two best things about this are, 1) it’s taught by me, Daryl Cognito and 2) it’s only 69 bucks.

Yep its been a while since I posted and I really am working on a schedule, but I needed to get this out. A while back I got hooked on a podio-book called The Best Laid Plans by Terry Fallis. This was a great story with great characters, okay, okay I’am a crappy book reviewer but trust me it was worth a listen. And now it is worth a read. Terry has managed to get the book published. It is on the Chapters/Indigo. If you enjoy a good story and like Canadian politics then you will love this book.

You don’t have to listen to my podcast

That’s right, you are off the hook, you don’t have to listen to my podcast.

I say this because, I have had a couple of people say to me “I haven’t had a chance to check out your show”. I know that this is often code for “I listened but, man, not my thing”. That is okay. Just because I do a podcast, and you do a podcast, doesn’t mean you have to listen to me, even if I listen to you.
The only thing that I ask is that if you come across someone who you think might like my show, or any other show, you reccomend it and even send them a link. I can’t listen to every podcast out there. I do, however, try and keep up on the types of shows out there so that when a family member or friend gets an ipod I have an idea of which shows to suggest to them.

The best way for us (the podcasters) to build the audience is not to listen to each other, but to start suggesting the right shows to the right people.

Finding Canada

Not surprising, my Canada is made up of the pop culture of CBC and CTV from the mid 70s to the mid 80s. I grew up without cable TV. Not because I am too old, or that my parents we poor, but because they had different priorities. They are now enjoying a comfortable and exciting retirement, while all I have is memories of a cold and empty childhood.

So, observations, what did I discover on my first trip to central canada. Well Central Canadians are not that much different than Calgarians, now that could be because most Calgarians are from Toronto. Ottawa is a beautiful place, so is kingston. However, it is really different in Central Canada. Most notable is the amount of history. Central Canada is a hell of a lot older that Alberta. Not the people, the buildings. This is because just like Cleveland is the birthplace of civilization, Central Canada is the birthplace of Canada. It was explained to me that the amazing Canal system in and around Ottawa was a result of the English deciding that we needed a safer route for transporting goods. Not only is Calgary younger than pretty much anywhere in Ontario, but we are also developmentally delayed. What I mean is that, and I have touched on this before, Calgary is the junior high students of Canada, we haven’t even hit puberty. The city did not even start to grow until the 50s. We were a small city on a river until after the 2and world war. There were a few buildings hotels and such, but no row house or really much to preserve. Note, I am not trying to devalue that pre 50s history, because it is there and what is left is worth preserving, but it is not on the same level, I mean an old RCMP fort, is cool, but it doesn’t hold a candle to a canal system built for national security.

As I said my pop culture memories are from the mid 70s through the mid 80s, and they are also from the CBC and CTV which came from Central Canada. My friends have memories of Saturday night live and school house rock. I have memories of Peter puck and Terry David Muligan. Something were a bit different out west. For example, do you remember that clown, that hobo clown that would show up on children’s daytime programing. I finally had that mystery solved. I could never figure out his point. Turns out, he was teaching french. You see, in alberta the just dubbed in english. Remember, Alberta was the province with a picture of Rene Levesque with a big X on it at the border in the 70s.

I am glad I finally had a change to meet Canada this weekend, I am sorry it took so long. I guess my next adventure need to involve Quebec. You listeners can look forward to more of this because I am going to continue this journey to discover canada. Watch out quebec, you might be next.

The next commenter to your podcast

I was going to do the standard post about how great PAB was, how much I loved it and link to everyone. But if you follow me on Twitter or have read any other blogs tagged PAB2007 then you know how great it was.

I thought I would post about some of my thoughts on what we could do next to improve the visibility of podcasts. Last night at the Taphouse over beers with some of finest Geeks I have ever had the pleasure of drinking with, I start thinking out loud about the “listener comment”.

First a bit of background. A couple of weeks back Lord Blevis talked on CPB about not saying the name of your show when you phone or send in an audio comment. Now about a week before this I was compelled to call into Today in iphone. I chose to identify myself as Daryl C from Calgary. I repeated this when I called into inside PR. Now I did this because neither of these podcasts aren’t about podcasts, so saying, “This is Daryl Cognito, from Atomic Suburbia dot com seemed wrong.

Okay, where was I? Right, the listener comment. The Listener comment is a very important part of podcasting. First, it allows for dialog between the podcaster and the listener, second it allowed the commenter/podcaster to “pimp” their show. This was important in the first couple of years of podcasting. I am thinking now that we need to start thinking about that listener/commenter we want to attract next. If you want the next listener/commenter to your show to be a podcaster then keep starting and ending all of your comments with, “this is so and so from the so and so show at so and so dot com. But, if you what the next listener/commenter to your show to be a non podcaster, then consider calling and leaving just your name.

The logic behind this is that we want listeners to comment on our shows then they need to hear other listeners commenting. If a listener only hears other podcasters, then they might not call or send in audio because they might think it is a elite club. There is also the danger of podcast being made by podcasters, for podcasters, about podcasting. If half of you show is audio comment for other podcasters, and half of each audio comment is the other podcaster pimpin their show, then if my math is right ( and it rarely is) one quarter of you show is pimpin.
Now, I have thought about that all important link love. If you comment on a show and you want a link (and who doesn’t?) then let the podcaster know. The podcaster can then link in the show notes, or even better start a link catagory in the sidebar titled “comments”. This allow the link love and promotion without intruding on the non podcasters who are listening.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Mark Blevis this evening. Mark showed why he is the Prince of Canadian podcasting. He took time out of his PAB prep schedule to not only meet me for a drink, but he also took me a quick walking tour of downtown Ottawa. What a beautiful town. Unfortunately, because I took a wrong turn trying meet up with Ajay I didn’t get a chance to meet up with him, but I’m sure� we will connect tomorrow.

So now it’s time to get some sleep before heading to Kingston tomorrow. However, I have to hit a bookstore because despite my careful packing I forgot my donated children’s book.

On the road to PAB 07

I am currently on an air canada “Air Bus” flying east to Ottawa. Just a note on air canada, I don’t like them. I would have preferred to fly Westjet but I booked through the AMA and they deal with air canada.� It’s not so much the service or the planes. The stewardesses are lovely and the plane is comfortable.� They beat the hell out of Delta which just sucks. But there is a “feel” thats not right. The plane has about 10 or so seat designated “executive class”. Now these cost 3 - 4 times as much and the really aren’t that nice. They do get omelets, (us coach flyers have to buy muffins and nuts.) And there is a curtain, yes a little blue curtain, that separates the “classes”. If there was a revolution, I don’t think the curtain will help the elite much.

Anyway, just an update. I’ve written this on the plane but will post when we land, kinda sucks not being connected. Gotta go, Ajay is snoring.

Dear Ajay:

Thank you for 78 episodes. Road Rage was the very first podcast added to the MWPC Hall of Fame. I don’t think I would be lying if I said that this really was my favorite podcast of all time. (All time being around two years) I think that I talked about Road Rage every third episode.

I loved the flow of the show, it was a great example of how a podcast can be put together when the producer is both creative and talented. You put a lot of time and energy into each episode. Not just your opinions, though there were a lot of those, but actual statistics and facts even. You also included a heavy dose of Poultry reports, Toad reports, Ostrich reports, wayward greyhound and the occasional lost alligator. Who could forget, The Rant, We’re all going to die, What were they thinking and of course The Supremes, a look at those crazy judges.

Every Tuesday morning Road Rage was in the catcher and I would move it to number three in the play list. Number three because I wanted your show for the morning commute, listen to road rage while on the the road and you reduce your rage I always said.

Through our shows and email we talked Tim Horton’s (thanx for the coffee), smoking and seat belts. I heard about your love of curling and having to carry Corky into the studio. Through forum posts I learned a lot about microphones and audio recording. Although we never met I count you as one my friend.

To hear of you death saddened me more that you could know.
Yo Ajay, thank you for everything and thank you for a great podcast. You will be missed by me and all who new you from the New England Podcasting Group and the Podcast Pickle .

My heart and my thoughts are with your family sir, go in peace.

PS, I just downloaded the entire RR library to be put on CD.

Actually it turned out to be more of a briefcase than a purse, but because it is vertical it is an easy “everyday” carry.

I admit that I was drawn to it because its called the Blogger. I have always liked Timbuk2’s products but never found one that fit. I did get the kid one for her birthday and she loves it. I ordered it Monday, got it today. I was surprised as the shipping was standard 3 to 5 days after shipped. Timbuk2 said it was shipped Wednesday morning. I tracked it on UPS to the door, very cool The bag was 80.00 us, plus 30 shipping, plus exchange. A bit pricey, but I am glad I didn’t pay for the faster shipping.

Ya, what the hell is the podcastbandito doing talking about a purse? I am trying to keep the blog more up to date, and this was the most exciting part of my week.

whoops, It seems that I have been living inside of Dan Klass’s head. I listened to his show this mornig and it seems that I covered his show almost exactly. This was an honest mistake but I have give Mr. Klass the option to ask me to pull the show. I will see what happens.

Almost Live From Canadia

After a couple of failed of attempts at a driving podcast. (probably karma for trying to steal an idea.) 120kph does not lend its self to good sound quality. I listened to a butt load of podcast this week including Bob and AJ and the Zecast. I am podcasting from the couch because I am lazy. Listener mail. Defending the bitterest pill. Canadia rant and I hate tim horton’s. I actually make a pretty good joke here. The start of the Kidney saga. The dog is asleep and the cat left so we are done.
