Earthquake Shakes Utah,Wyoming and Idaho

"SALT LAKE CITY — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake has rattled parts of Utah, Wyoming and Idaho.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in what is largely a sparsely populated area.

University of Utah officials say the quake hit just before 6 p.m. MDT Thursday. The epicenter was about five miles east-northeast of Randolph in Rich County.

Randolph is about 73 miles northeast of Salt Lake City. People in the state capital also reported feeling the temblor, and Idaho and Wyoming reported some shaking.

A dispatcher with the Rich County sheriff's office says the quake was strong enough to shake pictures on the wall."

Something larger is going to shake along the west coast.

"A magnitude-6.9 quake has hit China's autonomous region of Tibet, the US Geological Survey says.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the area, in the mountains that divide Qinghai province from the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The quake was centred 240 kilometres north north-west of Qamdo in Tibet and 380 kilometres south south-east of the mining town of Golmud in Qinghai, and had a depth of 47 kilometres, the USGS said.

The foothills to the south and east of the area are home to herders and Tibetan monasteries, while the area to the north and west is arid and desolate.

A magnitude-5.0 quake struck the same region late on Tuesday night.

A local tsunami watch was in effect for Indonesia, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The quake was centered 127 miles (204 km) west-northwest of Sibolga, Indonesia, and was at a depth of 28.6 miles (46 km), the USGS said.
