The Gist - Love At First Sight

On this date in 1982, The Gist released their third single, "Love At First Sight". It was backed by "Light Aircraft". The A side appeared on their only album, Embrace The Herd. The B side did not. The Caerdydd, Wales post punk band was formed by ex-Young Marble Giants' guitarist Stuart Moxham. They released three singles and one album before disbanding in 1983.

The Monochrome Set - The Mating Game

On this date in 1982, The Monochrome Set released their eighth single, "The Mating Game". It was backed by "j.d.h.a.n.e.y.". The A side appeared on their third album, Eligible Bachelors. The B side was named after a band member who just left the band (J.D. Haney) and was not included on the album until it was added as a bonus track on the CD re-release. The London post punk band rose from the ashes of a 1976 college band called The B Sides which included Stuart Goddard (Adam Ant). They released five albums before disbanding in 1985. They re-formed a few years later.

Stray Cats - Built For Speed

On this date in 1982, Stray Cats released their first U.S. album, Built For Speed. The Massapequa, NY trio had already released two albums in the U.K. The U.S. release was a combination of the two U.K. albums with more tracks coming from their self-titled U.K. debut. It was a success as "Rock This Town" reached the #9 spot on the U.S. singles chart and "Stray Cat Strut" reached the #3 spot. The album, itself, reached the #2 spot on the U.S. albums chart. The Massapequa, NY rockabilly band broke up in 1984 but periodically reunites for performances.

Yazoo - Don't Go

On this date in 1982, Yazoo released their second single, "Don't Go". It was backed by "Winter Kills". Both songs appeared on their debut album, Upstairs At Eric's. The single reached the #3 spot on the U.K. singles chart but failed to chart in the U.S. The Essex, England new wave band disbanded in 1983 after two albums. Vince Clarke, formerly of Depeche Mode, went on to form Erasure. Yazoo was known as Yaz in the U.S. because there was already a U.S. band named Yazoo. The band has recently reunited to tour.

Mars EP

On this date in 1980, Mars released their second record, a self-titled EP. It contained the tracks, "N.N. End", "Scorn", "Outside Africa", "Monopoly" and "The Immediate Stages of the Erotic". They did not release an album while together. In fact, The New York City no wave band had actually disbanded in 1978, before this record.

John Cooper Clarke - Ou Est La Maison De Fromage?

On this date in 1980, John Cooper Clarke released his debut album, Ou Est La Maison De Fromage?. It was a mixture of studio and live poems set to music. The single, "Gimmix" was on this album. The CD re-release expanded this to 32 tracks, including the inclusion of some Peel Sessions tracks and the Innocents EP. John Cooper Clarke was a punk poet from Manchester, England, whose poems would often, but not always, be set to background music. He opened for such bands as Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols, Joy Division and The Fall. He still performs.

The Heartbreakers - Live At Max's Kansas City

On this date in 1979, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers released their second album, Live At Max's Kansas City. It was a live album recorded over various nights in November, 1978. It was meant to record their farewell shows but they reunited many times thereafter for live shows and some live albums as well. The New York City punk band disbanded in 1979. Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan had previously been in New York Dolls.

The Newtown Neurotics - Hypocrite

On this date in 1979, The Newtown Neurotics released their debut single, "Hypocrite". It was backed by "You Said No". The band released their first album, Beggars Can Be Choosers, in 1983 but did not include any of their early singles. In 1990, they released a compilation called 45 Revolutions Per Minute and included both of these tracks. The Harlow, England punk/post punk band later shortened their name to The Neurotics. They disbanded in 1988 but have reunited a few times recently for performances.

The Minutemen - Bean Spill

On this date in 1982, Minutemen released their third 7-inch EP, Bean Spill. It included "Afternoons", "Future Restated", "Split Red", "If Reagan Played Disco" and "Case Closed". The five songs clocked in at a total of just over six minutes. "Split Red" appeared on their second album, What Makes A Man Start Fires? but the others did not. The San Pedro, California hardcore punk band broke up in December, 1985 when guitarist D. Boon was killed in a van accident.

The Comsat Angels - Independence Day

On this date in 1980, Comsat Angels released their third 7-inch record, "Independence Day". It was backed by "We Were". The A side appeared on their debut album, Waiting For A Miracle. The B side was a non-LP track but it was added as a bonus track when the album was re-released on CD. The band re-corded and re-released the A side as a 7 inch and a 12 inch in 1983 and it reached the #71 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The Sheffield, England post-punk/new wave band changed their name to the C.S. Angels later on due to some pressure from Comsat, the satellite company. They disbanded in 1995 with nine albums to their credit. Their bass player was Kevin Bacon. Not that Kevin Bacon.

Martha and The Muffins - Metro Music and About Insomnia

On this date in 1980, Martha and The Muffins released their debut album, Metro Music. It contained the singles, "Echo Beach", "Saigon" and "Paint By Number Heart". Only "Echo Beach" charted outside of their native Canada. That song reached the #10 spot on the U.K. singles chart.

On this same date, they also released their fifth single, "About Insomnia". It was backed by "146". Neither made Metro Music but the A side appeared on their second album, Trance And Dance. The Toronto, Canada new wave band changed their name of the band to M+M in 1983 and the band died out by 1986, though they have gotten together on and off since.

Neither track appeared on a regular studio album but both appeared on their 1979 compilation, Singles Going Steady. The single reached the #32 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The lead on the A side was handled by guitarist Steve Diggle. The Manchester, England punk band disbanded in 1981 but reunited in 1989 for a reunion tour. Shortly thereafter, Shelley and Diggle regrouped to start the Buzzcocks again with new band members and they continue to play today.

In what you can certainly call a surprise move, The Pirate Bay has been sold. Global Gaming Factory has announced that is has purchased the torrent search engine for 60 million Swedish Krona (7.8 million USD). They plan to build a business model around The Pirate Bay where content providers and copyright owners get compensatation.
