Tribute In Light [World Trade Center - 09/11]

*Now in its 12th year, the Tribute in Light sent two high-intensity beams of light four miles up into the night sky in a poignant memorial marking the absence of the original Twin Towers.

*Several dozen onlookers including victimsâ€™ family members and city officials watched the beams emanate from the top of a parking structure just blocks from Ground Zero in a solemn expression of remembrance.

* “It is a symbol of New York and of the resilience of New Yorkers after the attack.â€ said Ryan Pawling, assistant director for public programs at the 9/11 Memorial.

*Designers included John Bennett, Gustavo Bonevardi, Richard Nash Gould, Julian Laverdiere, and Paul Myoda with lighting consultant Paul Marantz. MAS continued the show annually through the tenth anniversary in 2011.

*The technology behind the Tribute in Light and skill required to pull it off are as impressive as the display itself.

*Pawling said each cannon had to be individually alignedâ€”beginning with the corners of each of the squares — to ensure the light beams point directly skyward with one unified glow.

*The cannons were adjusted fractions of a degree using specialized mounting gear that miles up in the sky accounts for a wide berth. If the lights are not all in sync, the beacons would appear fuzzy from far away.

*While the official Tribute in Light was only one night, New Yorkers for miles around could see the beams at night as crews traveled ten to fifteen miles away in several directions to ensure the beacons were plumb.

*The engine requires 20 kW to achieve a mean speed of 8 knots which is equal to 15 Kph or 9Mph and it is possible for the ship to go twice as fast.

*This marvelous solar powered ship weighs about 60 ton and costs $24.4 million.

*The assembly of this ship was carried out at Knierim Yacht club in Kiel, Northern Germany. It took 14 months for this ship to be assembled and launched.

*RaphaÃ«l Domjan, is from Switzerland and along with Frenchman GÃ©rard dâ€™Aboville, made the worldâ€™s first trip around the world that was powered by solar energy.

*Derek Muller (aka Veritasium) comes face to face with the most perfect sphere on Earth.

*Made from a single crystal of silicon 28 atoms, the object has been created by the Avogadro Project to help solve the longest running problem in measurement - how to define the kilogram.

*The goal of the Avogrado project (and the alternative approach, the Watt Balance) is to eliminate the kilogram’s dependence on a physical object.

*Avogadro’s constant is currently defined by the kilogram (the number of atoms in 12g of carbon-12) but the project aims to reverse this relationship so that the kilogram is precisely specified by Avogadro’s constant.

*And this is where the perfect sphere comes in. Since the spacing of silicon atoms is well known, the number of atoms in a sphere can be accurately calculated.

*This allows for a very precise determination of Avogadro’s constant - and a more accurate definition of the humble kilogram.

*Researchers at Georgia State University have been developing a microneedle patch that dissolves into the skin as a simple way for patients to painlessly self-administer vaccines.

*Rather than a liquid, the flu vaccine uses dry virus-like particles (VLP) that coat the microneedle patch along with an agent that makes it unnecessary for the patches to be refrigerated.

*The microneedles are just seven-tenths of millimeter in length â€” small enough to do away with the pain of being stuck with a hypodermic needle.

*Researcher envision the day when patients can self-administer the vaccine, but no word on how soon that will be. For those with a phobia of needles, that day canâ€™t come soon enough.
