Praise and Worship Dance, "Mercy Seat"

A few years ago the Lord opened the door for me to minister in dance at the Orpheum Theater in New Orleans. I had prepared and looked forward to this ministry assignment for months. Well, the day before the event my father-in-law died suddenly. As you can imagine my husband and the whole family were devastated. My dilemma was do I still fulfill my commitment, to minister in dance, or do I cancel my commitment and focus on helping to comfort my husband and family. Well, my husband in his gracious spirit and strength insisted that I keep the commitment. I did not ask my husband to let me go, it was all his idea.Many times the reasons that we have the privilege to praise-dance before the Lord is because of the sacrifice of our family and others. Dr. Debi Sharkey of "Live it first Ministries" has been a worship leader for over 27 years. Debi uses her public speaking ministry to encourage others to live for Christ in every area of their lives. The Children's Praise Dance Ministry

It is time for back to school and back to praise for our children.

"From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies. to silence the foe and the avenger" Psalm 8:1-2

In the "Effective Children's Dance Ministry" Tele-Class I had the opportunity to discuss aspects of a dance ministry were children are allowed to lead worship in a dynamic way and not just be cute.

Children are called to praise and lead others in praise.

In the book of Saint John the Lord used the donation of a Little's boys lunch to perform a miracle and feed many. Children want to serve the Lord, and their community. The dance ministry is a perfect place for them to do so.

The children's dance ministry must be a family friendly ministry where parents are not just involved but a vital part.

Keep the ministry fun. Dance in the Bible means play, sport. Dance is an expression of joy. Children should know that serving the Lord can be fun.

The children must be  excellent in worship and dance technique.

There must be a strong administrative structure for the children's dance ministry using written requirements, rehearsal and ministry schedules,

behavior expectations and a consistent rewards system.

Jocelyn Richard: How wonderful to have you this evening on the

Tele-Class. We are going to be talking with our very special

guest tonight, Pamela Stovall, the owner and founder of

The Master’s Touch Creations. We’re going to be discussing

‘Garments that Preach,’

What we wear when we worship the Lord in the dance is just as important as our music and our choreography.”
As a matter of fact, what we wear before the King of Kings when
we dance and minister before Him should be a wearable banner. It
should be glorious, and we should look and feel impeccable for our
King.

Jocelyn Richard: Minister Pamela what is the Biblical mandate for worship dance garments?

Pamela Stovall: Before we get into the
Biblical mandate, I think each dancer must know who God says that
they are. We are a royal priesthood, and we are kings and priests.

And so with that being known, I have the Biblical mandate

broken in two parts. The first part is covering who we are. As the

scripture states in Hosea, the people are destroyed for lack of

knowledge, and that’s a knowledge of not knowing who we are.

And the second thing is once we know who we are in the body

of Christ, it then says that we are a chosen priesthood and He

gave the priests instructions. God left orders of their holy garments

in Exodus. He gave them an order to go by. So when we read

the scripture we find out those who serve in the temple, and those

who serve before the presence of God will find Biblical instructions

In Exodus 28.

Pamela Stovall:   In Exodus 28. 2-4, it says: “Thou shall make
holy garments for Aaron, thy brother, for glory and for beauty, and
thou shall speak unto all that are wise-hearted and whom I have
filled with a spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments to
consecrate him, that they may minister among me in the priestly
office, and these are the garments which they shall make.” It gives a
description of the breastplate, the ephod, the robe, the embroidery
code and so on. It even tells the colors that they
should make it in. And I say this part to the priests of old, it is
very important to the priests of right now. So that’s the mandate
the scripture is telling us to go by.”

Jocelyn Richard: Well, thank you; that’s very important, because
whatever we do for the Lord, we have to make sure that there’s a scripture to it. And I’m glad that you brought those scriptures out. As dance ministers, we need

to know those scriptures and that needs to be our guidebook.

So when we choose our garments, we don’t just choose anything.

We should put thought and pray over what we wear when

we dance. It’s just like we don’t just choose any music for our
choreography. It’s the same thing.

Jocelyn Richard: So having this Biblical mandate. What are the three things,

that we should consider when we choose our garments?

Pamela Stovall: I think our garments should show the beauty of Christ.

I think they should show the honor of Christ, and I think

They should show the holiness of Christ. Choose according

to the economical level of your church or your ministry.

Jocelyn Richard: Good….excellent. Now, let’s remember:
You said the beauty of the Lord, the . . …

Pamela Stovall: the honor of the Lord,

Jocelyn Richard: The honor of the Lord, and the holiness.
That’s, excellent. I hope you all wrote that down.

When you talk about the dance ministry is a visual art form.

Everyone likes to look at beautiful things and there’s nothing

wrong with feeling and looking beautiful for the Lord.

So, now, let’s say I’m part of a large dance team, with people

of varying shapes and sizes. How can I outfit such a team
and still be elegant, unified, and economical. I know that’s
asking a lot…..but how? What advice would you give us

For outfitting such a team?

Pamela Stovall: First of all, make sure that we choose something
that will compliment everybody’s shape. Sometimes we
think economically. Just because we see it has a price

that we can afford we try to make it fit everybody. Then

it winds up not being honorable. It winds up not enhancing

anything, So one of the things that we need to consider is body types.

And then proper undergarments. You know even though

we’re thinking economically, first things first. Even if you have

to wait before you go forth to present (to dance). Worship unto the

Lord may be worth waiting,

Jocelyn Richard: Well that is definitely foundational teaching. If you’re not

ready, even as far as your outward garments….. wait. Now
that is deep. Because I’m the kind of personality — it
would be hard for me to wait, but that is, that’s so rich.
I’m so glad that you said that. And I don’t even
think that I’ve even heard anyone say that, but it’s true. It’s part
of the overall presentation of worship to the Lord, of leading

others to worship the Lord. If that’s not in order, then just

like any other thing in our ministry not in order, then it’s

OK to sit and wait until we get that in place.

Let’s talk about modesty, the importance of modesty, and your experience with it.

So tell us the importance

and how do we make sure we’re dressed modestly and we’re

presented modestly.

Pamela Stovall: Modesty is very, because
there are things we need to consider being in the office that we
are in. First of all, we never want to be offensive to the people

that are witnessing the worship to God. And we don’t want to

be offensive to God. Not everybody is going to be in a state of

worship while we’re praising God, while we’re going before

the Lord and ushering unto Him. So we don’t want to be

offensive to the people that are witnessing or watching us

worship God. Second, we want to always present ourselves

in a holy way. Third, we don’t want to become a distraction

to keep anybody from coming to the Lord Jesus Christ.

This is most important. We don’t want to cause anybody to

stumble. So, in saying all of this: all of the garments we choose

need to be respectable. They need to cover us but they need to

be tailored to us. Not tight, but tailored. Being too big is as bad

as being too small. Some of these things can become distractions,

and they won’t receive what God has for them to receive.

Jocelyn Richard:   Minister Pamela, you’re an awesome lady, you know that?

I mean, I love that you said, ‘the office.’ I don’t hear that a lot.

But really, it is what we’re doing, we’re worship leaders. We’re

ministers for the Most High God. We do have an office, a place,

and I think that’s going to help us in choosing. If we

remember the word you just told us, that we have an

office, that’ll help us in being modest. That’ll help us in

choosing the appropriate garments. So thank you so much for that.

Pamela Stovall: The first thing that I think about, even before our garments, is that the song preaches first.
And then once we study the song ask God to give us vision. We
need to highlight those particular things in a song so that the people can be ministered to. Next, choosing
the colors for what is to be interpreted, because we don’t want to talk.
I’ll give you an example. We don’t want to say how holy God is and
then we’re in black.

Pamela Stovall: Everything we need, even in the scripture I read
before, is in the Bible. When He told them to choose the garments

of the priests, he told them exactly what colors to use. So it would have           been contrary for those skillful people, who were sewing them,
to sew something different. If it’s important to God, it should be
important to us. Make sure our garments are expressing what
the Word of God says. That’s how we make sure our garments preach.
I think that’s something that’s important. The garments that we wear for worship dance should be able to preach even when the song stops.

Praise Dance With Your Face

Do you worship with your face? When you choreograph do you include facial expressions?

Check out the excerpt from the worship dance training manual titled "Phenomenal Choreography for Worship"

Exodus 34:29-30

29And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.

30And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.

Moses came down from the mountain and the glory of the Lord reflected on his face. Moses had such a life changing experience with God on the mountain that his countenance showed the depth of the relationship. Dance is a living moving picture of God's relationship with His people. When you dance your face must say the same thing as your movement and music. Your face should express the glory of God. It is important that the face reflect what the choreography is saying. God’s presence should be shown on our face. Facial expressions can show reverence for God and adoration inviting others to join in worshiping and praising the King of Kings.

Facial expressions are very important to the message of the dance. (Acts 6:15) When Stephen was preaching about Jesus his face was shining like an angel. Use a bright bold real smile for the dance of joy and victory. Make sure that your smile does not appear phony. Use a reflective pensive, subtle smile, for the dance of prayer, adoration, and worship. Use a dramatic, bold face for warfare, fear, death, sadness, and also victory.

Choreography Action Steps:

1. Practice using facial expressions in the mirror to become comfortable with dancing with your face.

2. Sit on a chair in front of a partner. Take turns performing facial expressions without sound. Do not tell   your partner what your expressions mean. Have your partner guess what your face dance is about.

3. Have someone take a close up picture of you demonstrating different facial expressions. Put the printed photos in a book or journal entitled" I dance with my face".

Worship-Dance With Holy Music

Within the book of Psalms you will discover the word Selah (Psalm 32:5). Selah means stop or pause and give thought to what is being said or sung. While pausing, words are not spoken nor sung, yet the instruments continue to play. With the playing of musical instruments worship to the Lord continues. Such times are perfect for creating dance.
