Business Ethics - Money or Customers and Netflix / Redbox

This month millions of Netflix subscribers are voting with their feet and walking away from the mail order dvd rental company. And they should. (I did too!)

Netflix decided to raise their rates by 60% and give customers multiple options as to whether they wanted to receive dvds in the mail, use only live streaming or both. Each one has different prices, where as before they were all under the same -one price fits all- deal.

So far over 600,000 people have cancelled their subscriptions. Stocks have fallen by $40 a share. They expect to lose over $1,000,000 this quarter, yet feel that it is the 'right way to go' for future growth.

Personally I was offended by the price changes, and the harrassing emails about dvd's that I had at home, and how they would make me purchase them if they did not receive them by a certain date - all because I cancelled the dvd portion and elected to go with streaming. Of course, even though I made the change on my account weeks before their deadline, they sent a dvd that was on my list from before I made the change.

At a time when American unemployment is at an all time high and people are strapped financially, a cheap movie can be an excellent way to relax and unwind from the stress of the day. And as Redbox raises their prices on DVD rentals nationwide in over 33,000 kiosks, it makes me wonder what their priorities are.

The purpose of a business is to make money. Period. If it is anything else you don't have a business, you have a charity. Colleges and Banks are businesses, under the guise of being helpful and improving our lives, but remember, they have to pay for all of those pretty buildings one way and it is your money that does it!

So, everyone is willing to pay a price for an education, entertainment, and to have a secure place to keep our money. But if your bank, college or bookstore raised all of their prices by 60% would you still shop there? I doubt it.

Imagine what would happen if Walmart raised it's prices overnight by 60%... and Target stayed the same. Walmart would keep a few loyal people, a few ignorant people who don't know how to track their own spending and would lose everyone else to Target.

In today's information society - people will go to where the information is, and where it is cheap. That is why Youtube is such a big hit! So, what does this all mean for Netflix?

It will continue to lose customers to Redbox, Amazon, Hulu and other streaming companies. And people will tell their friends. And they will flock to where the information and entertainment is cheap.

Polyamory.

Polyamory is a relationship where at least one partner has sexual love (eros for our Greek enthusiasts) for more than one person. There are many forms polyamory can take. There can be 3 lovers where all 3 are involved with each other, such as 1 man and 2 bisexual women. Or where 1 is involved with 2 only, such as the man involved with both women but the women don't have a sexual relationship with each other. These two examples can be expanded out to include any number of lovers, genders and sexual preferences; three is just an easy number to use as an example.

What are some of the first sources that record polyamorous relationships? Ironically in the scriptures of the Abrahamic religions which often condemn it today. The Jews have laws for polygamy in the Torah; the Christians have the same laws in the first 5 books of the Bible; the Muslims are instructed in the Quran to read and follow the Torah. Islam wouldn't even exist if Abraham hadn't been a polygamist because Mohammed is descended from Ishmael, Abraham's son through his second wife. (Abraham had 3 wives - see Genesis 16 and Genesis 25.) In Deuteronomy there are laws permitting polygamy, which is a marriage of a group of polyamorists. Some argue that those laws only exist in the Old Testament and are no longer valid because of Jesus in the New Testament. Hmmm. Matthew 5:17 "And Jesus said, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law (the Old Testament) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.""

Different polyamorous groups also define their relationships in different ways. Some believe having more than one lover without the knowledge of all the lovers is ok, while others believe everyone should know and be consenting. Integrity is unfortunately in short supply in our world today as is true love. We believe polyamory is perfectly acceptable as is monogamy. Some people wish to share their life with more than one lover, some do not. Either is perfectly acceptable. As consenting adults, the lovers are free to choose. There is no universal wrong done by loving more than one person; if there was no one could love their friends, family and lover(s) all at the same time.

However, what difference is there between cheating and polyamory if a person is in a monogamous relationship with someone and has a lover on the side? There isn't. Technically that's polyamory, but it's also cheating. The entire purpose of being a Professional Pagan is to dissolve the stereotypes of immorality, laziness and lawlessness that cling to the word "pagan". How can we conduct ourselves as professionals, be leaders and be role models if we aren't worthy of the trust of those we choose to share our lives with?
So how can people be polyamorous while maintaining morality and integrity? Simple: if everyone in the relationship agrees upon the boundaries which define the relationship, then it's not cheating. When there are no betrayals, lies or immorality, how could it be considered cheating? Whether a person chooses to be polyamorous or not is their choice to make, they can do it morally, and whether they are or are not doesn't determine if they're a "good" pagan.

DADT - Newest Info!!! May 1st is the DAY!!!

Well, it looks like I was right - As Dept of Defense gets ready to have May 1, 2011 as the day DADT officially goes away and the doors open to GLB people for enlistment into the military, they are training their troops en-mass.

For hours troops will sit in a classroom to find out the following:

Gays can openly serve in all branches of service effective 01 May 2011.
People who have been discharged for "Homosexuality" can re-enter service. Any other discharge narratives are on a case by case basis.
Gays/Lesbians & Bisexuals will be able to wear what they want - OUT of uniform. In uniform the standards always apply.
There will be no tolerance of public display's of affection in uniform.
Hazing / Harassment will not be tolerated.
Gay Marriages / Civil Ordinances will not be recognized by the DOD.
GLB can claim children, but not lovers as dependents. Life insurance policies can be left to lovers.

---AND!!!----

The Uniform Code of Military Justice WILL NOT be changing. Article 125: Sodomy will still be an active and enforceable law. Sodomy is considered to include Oral or Anal Sex. (Even among consenting Spouses.) There are times when straight military members are given disciplinary action because they have violated this Law with their spouse. How does someone get prosecuted for this? There are pictures/video, and one spouse gets mad at the other and presents them as evidence. Without photographic evidence, military commanders and investigators will NOT pursue disciplinary action. (Unless they witness it themselves.)

Test Tube Meat?

A few weeks ago I did a blog on how scientists in China were working on mixing human DNA into cows, in an effort to have dairy cows make "Human Breast Milk".

Looking deeper into the future of our food - I have re-discovered an article on 'Test Tube Meat'.

The future of ground meat looks as though it could be created in a lab. Take a little DNA from a chicken or turkey, mix it up with some vegetable cells, shock it a few times to give it a muscle-like structure and ~POOF!~ you have Phoney Baloney!

On a serious note- the intention is to have a cost effective meat source for the masses, especially while farm and ranch land is sold to become the suburbs of tomorrow. The article also cites "Green house gas emissions" from livestock as another reason. At first my thought was "Well that is easy - I just won't buy it!" but then as I thought about it more, there is nothing to say that the tubular meat won't wind up as my meal anyway!

In a day and age where Taco-bell uses corn starch to supplement it's meat source in it's "Beef" tacos, and all restaurants are looking for ways to cut costs, while keeping their menu affordable, I can easily see how the man-made meat would be used. Chicken Patties/Nuggets, Hamburgers, and all of the $1 menu items of tomorrow could easily be made in a lab and mixed with other things to keep down costs. Where else could we see it? At our children's schools. As school districts look for ways to cut costs, they would rapidly buy a vitamin enriched burger to serve the kids. Especially if it is cheaper, and slightly 'healthier' than the natural alternative. And if the food has a longer shelf life - even better!

It is not a matter of if... it is a matter of when. And that when is looking like the next 5-10 years.

Just think, our cows will make our breast milk, and our labs will make our meat. What would the ancient Celts think!

MMMMMMmmmmmm! Who's up for a lab grown burger, with a frosty breast milk shake! Order up!!!

Pro-Life or Pro-Choice

Today I got an email from a Christian Pro-life group, and I thought "Silly Christians, always fighting against abortion. Don't you know I'm a Pagan?"

Then I froze, as what I had said went through me. I'm a Pagan, and most Pagans fight for Pro-Choice. You will often see women of our community with signs or some other form of media fighting for the right to chose what to do with her body. And that's okay - it's one of the things our Military has fought so hard for - our freedom to chose how to live our lives.

This blog is not an attack or a defense one way or the other. Personally I stand in the middle of the road. I firmly believe that life starts at conception, when one swimming sperm makes it into the egg and the chrysalis begins. Babies are babies before they leave the womb. No body asks a woman what she is going to name her "fetus". I also believe that there is a time for the right to chose, and not being a woman, I cannot imagine the weight of having to decide which way to go: to allow the creation of life to continue or to terminate the pregnancy. I have never thought differently of my friends who have made those difficult choices - I still love and respect them more than my biological adult family.

I just find it odd, that in a faith that places such a HIGH focus on the Wheel of Life and continually celebrates fertility and all things living, it is odd that we are the people who fight the most for the choice to destroy our own seed.

How many people do you know that would toil the soil in their yard, plant seed by hand, water it, love it and do energy work towards their newly planted garden? Many of them can count the days until the first few sprouts of life spring up above the soil. I can imagine how upset they'd be if just before the first sprout broke through the soil to see the light of day a group of children ran across the top of the garden. They'd be furious!!! Are our bodies so different? Or is it the permanent, life altering responsibility that raising children can bring that makes the difference?? After all - raising a child is expensive, hard work and lasts longer than most prison sentences!

I myself have several children. While I thought about this blog, I asked my teen-aged daughter if she knew what Pro-life and Pro-choice meant. She didn't. After explaining them to her, I asked her which one she thought Christianity and Paganism fell into. Her response was what I expected. "That's easy Daddy. Christianity is Pro-Choice because they're hypocritical and rude most of the time. Wicca, Witches and Pagans are Pro-Life because we love and celebrate life!"

And that we do... This is the time of year for Ostara / Eostre / Easter. All three are celebrations of life, though all in their own ways. Many of us will place eggs on our altars, on mantles or shelves as symbols of this Sabbat.

As we go forward and participate in our own celebrations / rituals, maybe we should ask ourselves what is it that we really believe and are we living examples of our said beliefs? Or are we just being "Fluffy Pagans" and practicing only the things we say we enjoy and going about our lives in a way that is counter to our beliefs?

Like I said - this isn't a side or an attack. It is just something to think about...

Magic and the Bible

A lot of people believe that the Bible is anti-magic, spouting various verses about witches. However, there are a few things that everyone should keep in mind:

1- The Bible has been re-translated thousands of times over the last several thousand years. It has been put together by humans - not God. The translations include the feelings and viewpoints of men. There are versions of the Bible (Book of many books) that do not mention witches. I on a regular basis review several versions and translations before coming to a conclusion as to what it really says.

2- What is "Magic/Magick"? Modern Christians would consider it "evil" and the "work of the devil". Of course, those same people need to realize that the Bible itself is full of magic! So we need to work off of a good definition.

The Webster dictionary will give us the definition of the following words: Miracle and Magic
- Miracles: "something wonderful; a wonder, a marvelous thing, something which seems to go beyond the known laws of nature and is held to be the act of a supernatural being; a supernatural event.".
- Magic: "supernatural power over natural forces; extraordinary power or influence from a supernatural source." (And to those who can use it, it is a wonderful, marvelous thing!)

So if we look at the definitions, we need to realize that Magic and Miracles are virtually the same.

And anyone who is experienced with working with energy (whether by prayer, meditation or ritual) will tell you that they are directing the power of ____ to accomplish this Magical/Miraculous act.

Quantum Physics calls this energy "The Field". We also know it as: The Force, Chi, Qi, Holy Spirit, etc...

With that in mind let's look at the Bible. It is FULL of situations where people are utilizing the same energy source to accomplish their Magical/Miraculous goals. The ancients even used tools for divination!

By last count there are at least: 189 Miracles in the Bible

117 Miracles and Wonders in the Old Testament
32 miracles by Moses - 23 miracles by Elisha - the rest are throughout

72 Miracles and Wonders in the New Testament
46 Miracles of Jesus - 26 miracles of the Disciples of Jesus

Christians call the use of this energy "Miracles", while we call it "Magic".

Take out the bias of translation, and we are all playing with the same toys. You use your Lego's to build houses, and I'll build space ships.

Someday - just maybe... we will all be able to play together (without someone losing an eye!)

Career Advice: Applying and interviews

Yesterday while I was eating at a local restaurant, a beautiful young lady walked in and stood around waiting. She was well dressed in clean and comfortably fitting clothes and had taken the time to make sure her hair was done up and that her make-up was just enough to accent her natural beauty. She looked so pretty that the young lady I was having lunch with commented about how pretty the newcomer was.

Soon the general manager came out and asked her to "Pop a squat" at a table near us. (That made me cringe, especially with how well dressed and professionally groomed he was.) It rapidly became apparent that the young lady was there for a job interview.

Here are the good and bad things that I noticed:

1- The managers wording of "Pop a squat" had immediately thrown this nervous young lady for a loop. An expression of "What?!" flashed across her face. She masked it quickly, and he didn't see, as he was paying attention to his chair.
2- Her appearance was perfect for a job interview. She dressed slightly higher than what they would expect her to wear while working there.
3- His first question to her was: "So what brings you here today?" What she should have heard in her mind and answered was: "Why are you applying with MY Place of Employment?"
4- Her answer to this VITAL question ensured that she did not get hired. The very first thing out of her mouth was that she had lost/quit a job a few months ago after she had a seizure - the first one in her life. She went into the tragic tale of the process of getting back on her feet, and she assured him that she was okay and had a car and could drive.
5- The manager sat back while she went into this tirade... a non-conscious move to distance himself from her unexpected response. He expected "I really would like to work here... I eat here all the time... I love the food..." Etc. His arms crossed briefly as he sat back. Another way to distance himself from her. Not good.
6- He let her finish and then went into some generic questions. He had already made up his mind, but had to play the interview game. You certainly cannot tell someone 'thank you for your time' after they tell you all of their medical issues.
7- She had some pretty good answers to "What motivates you", and "How do you learn from your mistakes".
8- Eventually he ended the interview with "Well, thank you for your time. I'll let you know if we can use you down the road."
9- She could hear it in his voice - she needed to keep looking.

The sad thing about this interview is that she would have been hired immediately if she had answered the first question differently.

Here is how she should have handled things:
1- "I'm here today because I love ______ - the food and people here are awesome! I am a full-time student and I know that you are looking for sharp people to work here, so I thought this would be a perfect place to be!"

2- She should have waited for him to ask about what happened at her last job, and why did she leave it to explain the new medical discovery. But keep it brief and positive - not a sad tale of discovery and woe...
(a) "It was kind of weird. I started to have ______, a sort of mini-seizure -which I've never had before- and my parents and I decided to get things checked out, and decided it would be best that I focus on school until we knew for sure what was going on. My doctor quickly figured it out and now I'm good as gold! I can do everything like I always have - sports, dance, drive - I'm good!" All said with a smile, not a pitty party frown.
(b) Employers can't usually ask questions about health, unless it is something that could interfere with your ability to perform a job, or could be a danger to others. If she really was good - it needed to be kept short and sweet.

3- When he asked his other questions, she needed to make sure that she discussed OTHER obstacles / mistakes / learning lessons that she has overcome. Those stories need to have positive outcomes with the lesson learned.

4- Just those simple things, along with her appearance would have ensured that she was hired at the end of the interview.

Be the applicant that you would want to hire!

DADT: The current status on the Military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell"

Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) had it's hearing today at our nation's capitol. While it marks a new era of military service, it only changes things on the outside, it's hard to change things deep within.

For the past few months, the Department of Defense has been studying the effects that having openly gay service members will have. Morale, health and welfare, plus military readiness factors have been looked at in detail, while training has started to prepare for the changes to come.

For the most part, seasoned military members don't have a problem with people serving while being openly gay - there have been homosexuals serving in the military since the world's very first army was formed. Their level of acceptance, however, may be a different story.

The toughest areas of acceptance will be found in the initial training stages: Basic Training and Boot Camp. This is when you have the first melting pot of Americana thrown together - you get people of all shapes, sizes, races, religions and now, open sexuality. Showering, bunking, and team building will be a new experience for the military when it comes to people being openly gay. In the past, it was hidden and/or ignored.

The process will be hardest for male trainees (usually the most homo-phobic) as openly gay males have had the most difficult level of acceptance among their peers. Over time troops become accustom to each other, and their individual interests and beliefs, and acceptance of their peer- the brother or sister in arms is formed.
There have been countless openly lesbian service members, and very little has ever come from it - the troops generally accept it. What they won't easily accept: the visual aspects of male arousal amongst their peers in say, the showers or combined / close quarters.

From the sounds of things, under President Obama's new policy, it will be a "Accept it, or get out" scenario.
The training that current military members receive have already made it clear that it is a "Done Deal, so Deal With IT!". Want to know what the troops dread the most about the policy changes? Having to endure the hours of training. You could take 90+% of the military and tell them: "DADT is repealed, and your buddy can come out of the closet now." And the response? "I knew you were gay. Are you looking at my butt?"

There is already regular joking about it being legal, and troops can be heard teasing each other about being gay. And really - they don't care if someone is gay. What do they care about? Five things:

Do you know your job?
Can you do your job without me doing it for you?
Do you have your gear and can you use it?
Are you loyal to our Team and Unit?
Do you have my back/Can I trust you - with my life, and my secrets?

IF those five areas can be answered with a YES, any service member will be accepted. There may be some joking and kidding. Most likely though- there will be curiosity of how things are really going to change. Will there be a reverse discrimination system put in place to help openly gay troops get faster promotion, as they could be seen as a new 'minority'? Will new roommates be gay - or straight? Will I have to worry about returning to my barracks room to see the arms, legs and sexual organs of wild gay orgies?

Those questions will have to be addressed by the leadership of today. In addition, the policies will have to change - not only to join and serve - but the heart of military law itself: the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

Under the current UCMJ it is illegal to conduct Sodomy. Sodomy is basically considered to be anything that is not regular sex, to include oral and anal sex. (This includes married couples...)

But I'm sure these details are being seen to, especially since law makers are involved... and yet... no one has mentioned any changes to the UCMJ for sodomy taking place during their new training. Just that the ability to join and working standards will change.

So that brings the question: Will it be legal to join and serve your country, but NOT have sex with your lover in a way that brings pleasure to you both?

Only time will tell...

Loss of job due to beliefs?

Okay, according to an article on HuffingtonPost.com on 3/28/2011, a Wiccan named Carole A. Smith, a TSA worker at Albany's International airport was fired due to her religion. While I have little doubt that it contributed to the loss of her job, let's discuss the article and some possible options that could have be used.

1. It is extremely difficult to fire a Federal employee. I have seen countless people who should not have a job, yet still have it - because they're Federal employees. It is unfortunate that we don't have more details in the story.

2. While we should not HAVE to explain our religion and our beliefs - we find ourselves dealing with an ignorant populous, and it is our duty to share and explain what our beliefs are - when the opportunities arise. If we fail to do that we lose that window to the superstitions and stereotypes of the past.

3. The 'hexed' heater. Really? This is the BEST that someone could come up with? I would think that if she were going to 'hex' someone, it wouldn't be their car heater that would receive the focus of that energy. It would probably be that person directly, and probably the job that they are doing. (or their appearance, or lateness, or... etc...) But this may not have been explained that way - or in any other way than "do you think I'd work here if I could do that?". (And while that may be a true response, it has a lot of negative energy that is directed toward the receiver. They will not remember the response as much as the way they felt when you gave the answer....)

I feel that we sometimes create our own problems by not explaining things clearly to others. And while others may not listen, there will be people who are genuinely interested in our beliefs and our systems of worship. She could have used this to her betterment instead of re-enforcing a barrier that already existed.

1- Which church did you say you go to?
     (Thanks, now I know where NOT to go should I decide to be 'saved')
2- The Bible says that Jesus preached love - are you approaching me with a loving heart and humble spirit?
     (Because I'm not feeling it - I am feeling a lot of negative energy. Must be Satan, like when Peter had issues and Jesus cast him back.)
3- You go to that Nice/BIG church down the way? Wow - your Pastor must be doing pretty well with your tithing money. Didn't Jesus say it is harder for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven? (Just wondering....)
4- Where is it in the Bible that it says you should pay someone to be your modern Pharisee? I don't have to pay my church any money. It does appreciate a new plant, or a nice tree every now and then.
5- What faith are you? What faith was Jesus? Well, since he was a Jew... why aren't you?
6- Do you offer burnt sacrifices to your God? You're supposed to. I don't - even though I know there is some confusion about what Pagans believe and all...- but you are supposed to. Jesus said he was not here to change the law, and instructed his followers to continue to honor it.
7- Do you think the Bible is perfect and the exact word of God? (Well, of course!)
8- Oh good, so maybe you can answer something for me. When Jesus died, there are TWO different stories of how Judas dies. Which one is right? Does he Hang himself? --OR-- Does he fall on his head and his guts burst out?
9- John 1:18 says that "No man has seen the face of God." But Jacob and Abraham both saw him... So is John wrong --OR-- is Abraham and Jacob?
10- What does Jesus mean when he says: "Know ye not that ye are Gods?"   (Jesus says it in John 10:34)

Genetic Cattle and Human Breast Milk?

Human and Animal rights activists - prepare your signs! A news article posted in the Telegraph, a UK news source on April 02, 2011 shares with us a scary prospect: Mixing Human and Bovine DNA to produce "HUMAN" breast milk from a cow!

Science Correspondent Richard Gray tells us the story of how 300 cows have been successfully altered with human DNA so that they will produce milk that reportedly has the same properties as human breast milk.

This creates concern for me, as I feel that our food (especially livestock) has been altered enough - but we are only now starting to discover the effects of how hormone and genetic alteration of our food sources are affecting our bodies today - especially towards obesity and it's associated ailments.

There will be people on both sides who will feel passionate about their cause, but keep in mind the bottom line, as that is what often drives all business decisions: Who will gain the most?

Will it be the children of tomorrow? Will it be the parents? Will it be the Governments of the World? Obviously it will be the company that successfully creates it first / the healthiest option first. Let's look at just what WIC (Woman, Infants and Children) program could spend on this form of 'milk':

2010 Fiscal Year spending for WIC:     $6.5 BILLION Dollars *
Number of Breast Feeding Mothers on WIC (2005):         571,097**
Number of Non-Breast Feeding Post-Partum Mothers (2005):       634,380

(Side Note: 340,000 of those infants were born of illegal immigrants which are now 'anchored' here)

GRAND TOTAL = A new TRILLION DOLLAR industry after all possible global markets are included!

The Telegraph reports that the scientists in China will be focusing on commercial funding / research over the next three years and expect that the milk will be on the shelves 10 years from now. The current study is being funded by a "major biotechnology company" which is unnamed.

Due to the money involved, and the fact that the alterations and studies are being done in China, I will assume that this project will go to completion - with or without American input.

SO- here are some things that we should consider:
1- What will the effects be to children?
2- What will be the effects to the future of cattle and their offspring? (will these altered cows breed?)
3- Should the milk be allowed to be sold here in America?
4- What can we do to ensure that detailed studies are conducted before the products are allowed to be sold here?
5- What can the population do (individually and as a group) to ensure that this process will be tracked and honestly reported?
6- Is it something that the Tax payer should pay for?
7- What will it do to current farmers / ranchers and the laws that affect them?
and
8- Will these cows fall into a new condition/classification that will allow them "Human Rights" in addition to their animal rights?

I know that #8 may sound silly - but really - think about it.

Now may be the time to gather together with your friends and family to ensure that natural / organic options will always be available, and that we elect governing officials who are pro-health, not pro-government or pro-big business.

This land is ours... Let's use our Voice - and the Freedom that so many men and women have so valiantly risked their lives for.
