Eve is an inquisitive baby rat who regularly escapes from her cage. One night she meets a strange creature in a glass tank across the room—a boa constrictor named Malachi. The snake is amused by Eve’s questions, and he awes her with stories of the wilds where he was caught. What will happen to their fragile friendship when Eve discovers what Malachi eats? Can they devise a solution that will save both Malachi and Eve’s family of rats?

Feeding Malachi is a 6,000-word story, divided into 10 short chapters. The story is illustrated with beautiful ink drawings by the Sarah Cloutier, who is also the cover artist. The story has a few scary moments, but also a happy ending. Sarah won the quotes contest with 8 correct answers. Congrats! She asked for a drawing of a shelt skeleton, specifically lower body, so here’s my sketch.

In addition, a sample of the Cowry Catchers illustrations for Part I are here. Also, although I didn’t mention it in the podcast, Rah Cloutier did some sketches of the main characters for Cowry Catchers when she was trying to get a feel for anatomy. They’re not wearing clothes, but they’re also not very detailed.

Here’s my sketch of a pegasus skeleton, and here’s my DA gallery.

The Bunjee Venture by Stan McMurty is indeed available on Amazon for pennies. “The Old Gumbie Cat” is by T.S. Eliot, from his book of cat poems, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. It later became the raw material for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, Cats.

Hello, readers!

Well, I didn’t win a Parsec this year, but I lost to Scott Sigler, so no shame in that. I’ll post a link to all the winners as soon as I can find one. I’m proud that I was a finalist, and I get to keep that stamp on my website. I’m planning to be at Dragoncon next year, so perhaps I’ll get to compete with Cowry Catchers.

In other news, this website is about to get an overhaul, so it will be changing over the next few days.

Hi, guys! As I warned you, I’m living at a distant clinical site, where I work about 60 hours per week. I haven’t written the Gabalon story yet, nor would I have been able to podcast it if I had, but I do have the idea for it. I might find time to type it out this week-end; we’ll see. In the meantime, if you just want to hear my voice in something, I’ve done a lot of voice work for the Dunesteef in the last month. I’m in the following episodes. They’re rated about PG13.

1. Prophet made the iTunes featured list (podcast > arts > literature) and has been oscillating between pages 3 and 5 for the last few days.

2. A story I sold to the Greatest Uncommon Denominator (GUD) just came out in print! The story is called Forests of the Night, and it’s about a very old woman who arrives in a nursing home and is more than she appears. You can buy my story all by itself as a PDF for $1.33, a PDF of the entire issue for $3.50, or the paper magazine for $10.

3. I made a tentative video trailer for Cowry Catchers. It’s not the final version, but you can have a look.

Hi, guys!

I’m having a contest. It’s for people who’ve listened to the books, and it will run over the next 3 weeks until April 24th. The contest works like this: you review Prophet somewhere (iTunes, Podiobooks, Goodreads, your own blog). The review must contain at least a sentence or two of actual text (not just stars) and then send me an email at hilton at fauness dot com, telling me where you reviewed the book and that your review was an entry into the contest. This is retro-active, so anyone who has ever reviewed the books can email me, telling me where you reviewed them and that you want your review considered an entry.

You can also enter the contest by displaying one of the banners below on your website. Again, you need to email me and let me know.

The prize is a vignette, written by me, about a character of your choice. It can be any character in Prophet. I will write a little story (at least 1000 words) describing something from that character’s backstory or some event that happened off-screen in Prophet. A Cat Prince Distinguishes Himself – a short story on the Dunesteef

The Dunesteef Audiofiction podcast bought a Panamindorah short story a while back and podcast it yesterday. This is part of Lexis’s backstory, and I think they did a great job. If you like short fiction podcasts, I recommend this one. While they are a speculative ficiton podcast, they also produce magical realism stories, ghost stories, and some mild paranormal literary fiction, which is are not well-represented by other short fiction podcasts. Rish and Big will also be voicing a couple of characters for Cowry Catchers.

For reasons I cannot understand, the Dunesteef audio files do not play well with streaming players. The sound is all funny and bubbly, both on my streaming player and theirs. However, if you actually download the file and listen to it on your computer or MP3 player, it should sound fine. Or perhaps it’s just a fluke of my computer. Anyway, if you’re listening right off the website and it doesn’t work, try downloading it.

My friend Cherie Priest just released her fifth novel, Fathom, from Tor. It’s her first hardback, and it’s gotten excellent reviews. Cherie’s writing is dark, witty, and literary, with spunky heroines and meticulous world-building. I’ve been enjoying her writing since college. If you’re considering books for Christmas, give this one a look. If you’ve thought about making a donation to Prophet over at Podiobooks, I’d be very happy for you to take that money and support my friend (and the struggling publishing industry) instead. status update

I should put this out as a recorded author comment, but if I’m going to spend time with audio right now, it should be the actual story’s audio. I just wanted to give you all a status report on where I am with Book III. I was hoping to have it out by now, but obviously that hasn’t happened. Several things have stood in the way. One is anesthesia school. I’m in the midst of fifth term finals, and that’s keeping me really busy. The holiday season is also busy, and my program requires 40 hours of clinical per week right through Christmas, so I have to balance that with family visiting from out of town.

The final distraction is another Panamindorah series, Guild of the Cowry Catchers, which I’ve been grooming for submission. It’s been a year since I wrote it. I’ve been editing and polishing it, and I think it’s ready. Submitting a novel to editors and agents involves creating a lot of tools that have little to do with the creation of the book. You need a good query letter, a synopsis – both a long and a short version – sometimes an outline, sometimes other stuff. I write these things over several months, so that I can return to them frequently with fresh eyes, tweak them, make them better, bounce them off my beta readers, and try to see them the way someone unfamiliar with my work will see them. At this point, I’m just about done.

Unfortunately I’m realizing that this is a terrible time to be shopping a novel. I read a lot of agents’ and editors’ blogs, and the poor economy is hitting traditional publishing hard. Imprints have disappeared, talented people have lost their jobs, and many books have been orphaned. I’m sure the dust will eventually settle, although it will probably take a year or two. I’m trying to decide whether I should still query Cowry Catchers. It’s frustrating, because it’s my best work to date, and I had a plan for shopping it. But, hey, I’m having fun with new media, and no matter what happens, I’m planning to podcast this book when I get out of school. There will be illustrations, and it will be awesome.

Speaking of awesome, if you have not discovered Chris Lester’s Metamora City podcast, you really should give it a listen. His novel, Making the Cut, is my favorite thing on my iPod right now. Both the story and the production are excellent, with great voice acting, complex characters, and a plot that goes fearlessly into unexpected places. It does have mature content, and it’s not appropriate for children.

As for Book III of Prophet, I’m hoping to get it started before the new year. I’m sorry I can’t give you an exact date. My time belongs to my anesthesia program right now, and they haven’t given me my schedule beyond the 15th of December. Still, the Prophet podcast will continue, probably sooner rather than later. Question for you all:

A story-so-far is a few sentences at the beginning of a podcast summarizing the previous episode (or the whole previous story) and a story-to-come is a sentence or two at the end of a podcast as a teaser for the next episode. Many podcasters use them, but I don’t really like them. I usually fast-forward through them in other people’s podcasts, so I did not include them in Prophet. However, I usually listen to other podcast novels only after they’re finished. I can see how someone listening week-to-week might benefit from these devices. I doubt I’ll change how I’m doing this story, but I might change how I do the next one. So click the link or leave a comment and tell me: Would you prefer that my podcasts contain story-so-far’s and/or story-to-come’s?

Hey, guys! Here’s my sort of semi-weekly update.

Items talked about include my drabble “My Cat was Killed by Fairies” on episode 82 of The Drabblecast. The story that comes after mine is darker than their usual fair. If you don’t like gallows humor, you might not want to listen to the second part of the podcast.

I also mentioned Mur Lafferty’s I should be Writing, and I talked about Long Tale Press. However, upon closer examination, I’m no longer certain that Long Tale is a good place for Prophet. I’ll keep watching it, but right now they seem to be asking too much for too little.

I’ve submitted Prophet to Podiobooks.com, and it should be up there within about a week. I’ve also submitted it to iTunes, and the story should be in the iTunes directory in a day or two. Basically, there are two ways to listen to this book. If you subscribe at Podiobooks.com, you’ll get just the story. If you subscribe to the podcast feed with iTunes or another podcatcher, you’ll get the story, plus anything else I put out on the feed. This could include listener feedback and responses, updates about the statis of the book, promos for similar books, information about other Panamindorah stories, and so on.

I’ll put up a page on this website with links to Podiobooks and iTunes as they become available. In the meantime, here’s Episode 1.

Aaaand, this project is still moving forward. I’m waiting for the cover of Book I to be lettered by someone who has better software (and skilz) than I do. All the post-production for Book I is finished, and I’m starting post-production on Book II. The whole story consists of 3 books of about 50,000 words each.
