When I was a kid my dad taught me how to build things. We would often work together on building different projects like swings, tables, or even once a canoe. Growing up I thought it was pretty cool, and most of my role was just helping my dad out with whatever he needed. Most of our work together was when I was in middle school and I didn’t think much of it after that. I got back into it after college and my dad and I have been building things ever since.

My house is filled with stuff that I’ve had the chance to sweat over. Our coffee table, sofa table, kitchen table, book case, baby crib, toddler bed, and tons of outdoor furniture. I love the opportunity to sit down with a cup of coffee or a beer and just draw up a fun design. The ability to problem solve within the realm of woodworking is a pretty awesome endeavor. It is one of my biggest joys to be able to build something that my wife has ‘dreamed of.’

This hobby has also given me a real appreciation for good craftsmanship. I have a really hard time buying something that isn’t made of solid wood, and when I see good work I truly admire it. I appreciate the time it took to get it right, and the quality materials used in building. This has seeped into other aspects of my life as well. I appreciate quality made food, or a good cup of coffee, or a locally crafted beer. There is just something to be said about striving to make something great. Even if it’s not great, the effort good products take to create make it better.

I’d recommend this hobby to anyone. The peace that it brings, the creativity it fosters, and the challenges that it presents are a perfect fit for a good Saturday.
