Hey All!

We recently got to interview Carter Young from the new animated film Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie. Yes folks there is a new Paw Patrol movie and as a household with a young boy, we can’t wait to see it! Paw Patrol has been a staple in our home for some time. The new movie follows the PAW Patrol pups after their ship gets caught in a mysterious storm. They crash land on an uncharted tropical island filled with dinosaurs. They meet Rex, a pup who has been stranded on the island for years and has become an expert in all things dino-related.

When the PAW Patrol’s archrival, Mayor Humdinger, begins recklessly mining in hopes of exploiting the island for its natural resources, he inadvertently causes a huge, dormant volcano to erupt. The PAW Patrol pups are thrown into a series of high-stakes, dino-sized rescues bigger than anything they’ve done before, as they must stop Humdinger before everything on the island goes extinct.

We chatted with Carter Young, who stars in the film as Marshall (the fire rescue pup). We chatted about everything about the film to his future as Miles Morales aka Spin from Spidey and His Amazing friends. He also voices the character Miles Morales/Spin on that show too!

He is such a sweet and talented young actor and I’m so glad I got the chance to chat with him. Check out our full interview below or over on our YouTube!

In case you didn’t know, Halloween season now starts from July 5th until October 31st. Since it’s summer time, people now call the summer months the Summerween months now. So to celebrate Summerween we made these Summerween Marshmallow Ghost cups to sip on! It’s a refreshing spooky drink to enjoy for Summerween!

What I love about these is there are the perfect mix of spooky and summer fun!

They are super easy to make and only take 10 minutes to make!

Here is what you need to make these:

Ingredients:

• 9 ounce clear plastic cups
• 1 container of marshmallow fluff
• Chocolate milk
• A sharpie

Here is how to make it:

Using the back of a spoon, add marshmallow fluff to the insides of the plastic cups.

You can add 2-3 Ghost Smears in each cup.

Use the sharpie to draw on the ghost face.

Add chocolate milk or a chocolate milk shake & and a spooky straw and you’re done!

It’s that time of year again. It’s Shark Week time! If you’ve been following me for some time, you know I love me some Shark Week ! Every year we try to post something fun that you can eat or make while you watch and this year we’re back with another fun recipe. Check out this Shark Week Shark Float!

This Shark Week Shark Float is super easy to make and very refreshing. It’s a little bite to sip on and munch on while you watch this years show!

Here are the ingredients:

Ingredients:

• 3 scoops ice cream
• Hawaiian punch berry blue typhoon
• Shark gummies
• Peach rings
• Red or blue straws

To make it you just add the ice cream to your glass, then fill the glass with Hawaiian punch.

You then add a gummy shark, and a peach ring to the straw.

And that’s all you need to do to make it. I love to add a bunch of shark gummies or even a teddy graham inside of a gummy ring floating on top with a shark. That would be super cute as well.

Hey All!

Season 1 of X-Men 97 had the split episode of “Motendo / Lifedeath — Part 1” looked at the characters of Jubilee and Storm having personal journeys but in their own adventures which never overlap. DANGER.EXE elevates the concept of two characters having personal journeys but finds a way of uniting the adventures by way of them having something in common.

The characters in question here are Polaris and Professor Xavier. Each one is having a very personal impact over the death of Magneto from episode 4 by way of their individual relationship with him. The rest of the season, and especially this episode, presents the question “How do we live in a world without Magneto?” and what that means to different people. How is the legacy honored and preserved of someone who was not just important personally to their loved ones, but was important to the world?

DANGER.EXE does the same magic trick that a lot of X-Men 97 has done by taking aspects of storylines from the over 60 years of comic continuity and mixing them to create a new story that honors the themes of the original story while zigging instead of zagging to keep things fresh for longtime fans.

Fans of the comics will recognize the title and backdrop of the setting from a story arc in the mid 2000s from Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men run. Of all the episodes, DANGER.EXE has the most easter eggs and nods to both the aforementioned Astonishing X-Men run as well as Grant Morrison’s New X-Men run.

DANGER.EXE also follows the other great thing that X-Men 97 has been doing which is focusing on a character which has not received as much spotlight previously. Lorna Dane/Polaris is that character in this episode, which I think will lead to some people calling it “the Polaris episode” despite the focus being on how her and Xavier deal with big changes in their lives. Weaving aspects of Polaris’ history through the decades of her time in the various X-books into this episode will hopefully catapult her popularity into a “Polarissance.”

With the X-Men having begun season 2 split by way of time travel, DANGER.EXE begins setting the new status quo for the season by giving the team a new mission and new costumes by the end of the episode. Because this is halfway through the current season, I can only hope season 3 will further X-pand on the newly established status quo.

Hey All!

Of all the episodes in Season 2 of X-Men 97, Weapon X, Lies, and DVDs stands out as the most graphic and violent. Understanding this is still an animated show on Disney Plus, they do push the TV-14 rating.

X-Men 97 Season 1, Episode 3 Fire Made Flesh was a horror story with Jean’s clone Madelyne Pryor turning the mansion into a nightmarish haunted house situation. Weapon X, Lies and DVDs, in the same vein, uses tropes of light body horror, isolationism, and paranoia from horror films Aliens and John Carpenter’s The Thing to set the mood.

Teased at the end of episode 4, Wolverine is going to a Weapon X Facility and he isn’t going alone. Members of his team include Sabretooth, Maverick, Lady Deathstrike, Garrison Kane, and Morph. The four prior characters having an association with Weapon X in the comics and the first 3 having previously appeared in the original X-Men The Animated Series. Garrison Kane, while previously having a cameo in the original series, does get slightly more to do in this appearance.

The outlier of the group is Morph because of his loyalty to Wolverine. In many ways, X-men 97 has taken how characters were presented in the original animated series and found ways to recontextualize what they mean and who they are without really changing the core of the character. Because the episode involves Weapon X, obviously Wolverine is the subject matter, but the episode looks at Logan through the eyes of Morph who is our eyes in the story.

To avoid spoilers, I will simply say in summation that by the end of the episode, Wolverine’s famous comic quote “I’m the best there is at what I do” is reframed to reflect that it is how he sees himself and that is the only value he puts on himself and as one character muses aloud “Doesn’t that make you sad? That makes me sad.”

Moana is the latest of Disney’s animation to live action film adaptations. As I have previously stated on this site, there are two routes that Disney goes for these adaptations: diversions from the point of view of the original films like Maleficent and Cruella, or direct retelling in live action like The Little Mermaid and most recently last year’s Lilo and Stitch. As of late, when it comes to the live action retellings, Disney seems to be in favor in sticking so closely to the original animated film that not only are the beats of the story the same, but many frames seem to act as storyboards as they try to shoot in live action exactly as it looked in animation.

Even in Lilo and Stitch, rather than altering the looks of the aliens from animation, they simply converted them into a 3-dimensional state using computer graphics. This is the case as well for Moana; even the pig Pua and chicken Heihei have been recreated to look just like their animated counterparts rather than resemble a real chicken and pig.

For those that are not familiar with the 2016 animated film Moana, yes, the original is only ten years old and is getting the live action adaptation treatment, the story is centered around Pacific Islands and their associated myths, legends and culture. A demigod named Maui steals a stone which is the heart of the goddess Te Fiti whose existence flourishes the ocean and islands with life.

The people of Moana’s island, Motunui, have a story where the ocean will choose someone to find The Heart of Te Fiti and with Maui’s help, return it and restore the natural order of the ocean and islands. Much like the animated film, this history is communicated in story form to Moana as a young girl in the beginning of the film.

The live action adaptation does not deviate from the people of Motunui forgetting and denying their ancestors voyaging ways; nor does it change Moana’s spirit for adventure and desire to journey beyond the island’s reef. The live action adaptation follows the story beats of the original animated film verbatim; there are no changes and no surprises. What is added in the live action adaptation is live action.

We no longer live in a world in which digital techniques cannot be applied to live action entertainment to create imaginative worlds and creatures which could only be done in animation. We do still live in a world in which animation and digital graphics cannot capture natural performances from live actors.

One of the big wins for having a live action Moana film is we get Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson being the live action Maui. In the animated film, Maui has a human body but is drawn to reflect his strength. Maui was voiced by Dwayne Johnson in the animated film and now he gets to be the live action embodiment of his animated character. What luck for all involved that he has always been a very athletic and physical performer, has natural charisma, and is very animated as an actor.

I dare say that Johnson’s live action performance as Maui is better than his animated performance. In live action, he has all his tools at his disposal. The big cocky smile he gives for Maui just works so well and his own physical presence makes the fantastic feats he accomplishes more believable. When you see Maui lift Moana’s boat with one hand, you buy it because look at the size of those muscles!

Though Johnson as a live action Maui is worth watching the film alone, his chemistry with the live action Moana (played by newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia) is equal to that from the animated film. Remember, the title of the film is Moana and the movie does not allow anyone to steal the show from anyone. Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana really holds her own quite well for a first-time lead in a big budget Hollywood movie. The performance does differ because she is not the original voice and she is not a cartoon, but Laga’aia captures and adequately displays the essence of Moana; and she has a beautiful singing voice so at no point does one feel the need to invite comparison.

One more thing that a live action adaptation brings is being able to behold things you know are real. The beautiful costumes of the people of Motunui are real, the stunning setting of the islands are real, and my favorite part is seeing live action choreography in a musical. Without a doubt, live action musical choreography has a presence and dynamism that has yet to be equally illustrated in animation. Also, live actors dancing, singing and navigating their boats to the song “We Know the Way” just looks really cool on the big screen.

The songs are the same, the story is the same, and as such Moana is just as fun in live action. There is one new song: “Along the Way” by Lin Manuel Miranda and performed by Catherine Lagaʻaia (the live action Moana), Auliʻi Cravalho (the original animated Moana), and Dwayne Johnson (Maui). Moana is a safe bet because you do know exactly what you are getting and if you are a fan of the original animated film, you will likely get similar enjoyment from this new live action adaptation.

Hey All!

Supergirl is the second feature film in the new DC Universe of films, followed by 2025’s Superman. Supergirl stars and is centered around Kara Zor El (Milly Alcock), the cousin of Superman who made her introduction in his film. Though there is much connective tissue between Superman and Supergirl, this film is less a sequel to Superman, and more so just the second chapter in the seemingly expanding story that mastermind James Gunn is weaving for his vision of the DC Universe.

Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie, director of such films as Cruella, The Finest Hours, and my personal favorite from his catalogue Lars and the Real Girl. Using a script from Ana Nogueira, Gillespie crafts a “world” that leans more into the science fiction realm that is filled with aliens, different planets, different suns, and space travel. The film’s setting and premise is inspired by Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Eisner nominated comic book miniseries Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow.

Rather than be an adaption of Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow, it is fairer to say that Supergirl takes inspiration from the beloved comic. Whereas the vibe and story of Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow was more in the vein of True Grit, Supergirl is more in the vein of the road trip genre; two friends go on a journey and within their quest reveal things to one another and grow as individuals and as friends.

The look and tone of the film can be likened to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films best. The bright and varied colors of ships, aliens, machines, planets, and everything teamed with treating everything fantastic to human eyes as everyday life for beings of another world are things I think most people think of when remembering Gunn’s Guardians films and it is safe to say that is the intent in Supergirl. Even the Brigands (essentially savage space pirates) are reminiscent of the Ravagers from the aforementioned Guardians films. Additionally, the balance of irreverent humor and human drama that James Gunn productions are known for, seems to be part of the vision for James Gunn’s DCU, and is well done in Supergirl.

To its benefit, Supergirl’s plot and story are very straightforward and focused. For her birthday, Supergirl travels the universe to hang in solar systems with red suns so that she can feel the effects of getting drunk. She is portrayed as someone who has great loss and is herself lost. As she drifts from one planet and party to the next, we get the sense that she has no direction and is not interested in finding one. It is not until she finds purpose that both the film and she begin to focus. On one of the many planets visited, Kara meets Ruthye Knoll, who is seeking vengeance on the man who, in front of her, murdered her family. Though reluctant at first, Kara is motivated through several reasons, including the same man shooting her dog Krypto with poison, to aide Ruthye in her quest.

Along the quest through the cosmos, the film introduces us to what space travel is like. There is a ship transport is basically like a greyhound bus taking passengers from planetary system to planetary system, there are space pit stops that give the vibe of a wacky 7-11, space raiders that rob transports, bars with colorful aliens, and space bounty hunters who ride jet propulsion bikes. Okay it really is just one space bounty hunter who rides a jet propulsion bike and that’s comic book fan favorite Lobo as played by Jason Momoa.

Now one may think, “Isn’t Jason Momoa Aquaman?” He was. And now in James Gunn’s DC Universe, he is Lobo. Simple as that. For those who are familiar with the character, it was an obvious choice to cast Momoa as Lobo and he delivers. Supergirl feels like a movie where everyone had fun making it, but I am not sure anyone had more fun than Jason Momoa playing Lobo. In no way does Momoa, or the character of Lobo, steal the movie from Supergirl, but his presence just makes sense and is fun to watch as he comes in and out of the movie. Though he is present for some major fights in the film, the film knows it is not his story, and he does not overstay or under stay his welcome.

Not outside the logic of his presence in the film is also David Corenswet’s Superman. More than just cameos, his presence in the film lends to the idea that in this DC Universe, all the actors will make time to be present in various projects even if they are not the star. Again, it doesn’t detract from the film being about Supergirl and Ruthye, but it fits and just makes sense.

For me, the real standout performance is Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard, Red Sparrow) who plays the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills. Schoenaerts’ performance is a villain who revels in being despicable, cruel, and violent and really meets the standard as being “a villain you love to hate.”

As Supergirl, Milly Alcock is able to convey the grief, confidence, and fun that is written into the role, but especially shines in the moments of grief, wandering and suffering. And this is a Supergirl who suffers. In addition to taking hits and being slammed into things, she is haunted by the loss of her family and her people. While Superman’s origin and flight from Krypton have been told many times in many different media, now we get to see Supergirl’s origin and escape and it is some of the most powerful and memorable drama of the film, as it was from comic Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow.

While the theme and moral from 2025’s Superman was “its punk rock to be kind,” Supergirl’s message is “above all, be good.” A message that succinctly understands that one cannot be perfect in every way and rather just asks that we be good.

While I would say that Supergirl is fun and generally safe for all ages, it should be said that there is violence and vulgar language spread through the film. If you feel safe watching James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films (yes, it is hard not to use them as a point of reference) and last year’s Superman, then you should have fun and feel safe watching Supergirl.

Hey All!

It was quite a feat to bring back the beloved X-Men The Animated Series after over a 30 year absence. But not only did Marvel Animation Studios bring back the show, they managed a balance of staying true to the tone and look of the original series while elevating the storytelling and using modern animation techniques to create a more dynamic show overall. It was a success on every level and, as a fan of the original series, the comics, and the X-Men in general, I was more than impressed.

Two years later, X-Men 97 returns to Disney Plus and we were treated to the first four episodes of the new season.

The format of the show has not changed; the episodes are still within the 25-30 minute range, just like they would be airing on television, and they still rock the beloved theme for the show for every episode. The animation style and voice cast remain the same as well.

Though we were only given access to the first four episodes, it does appear that the show is following the same format of adapting storylines made famous in the comics but with a slight twist; this makes fans like me point to the screen and say “oh, oh, oh, I know this, this is from the mid nineties miniseries Rise of Apocalypse that I read as a kid!” So, to say that this show remains for the fans would be an understatement.

Additionally, “previously, on X-Men” our merry mutants ended season one by being blasted through time. Some of the team arrived in the distant past and some in the distant future. Though the first episode, and every subsequent episode, does begin with the catch-up scenes in the “previously on X-Men” segment, I think it would behoove anyone interested in watching season 2 to rewatch season 1. To not do that homework could leave one as lost as the X-Men are in time. And the first four episodes pick up exactly where the show left off two years ago.

The first four episodes also are all about getting the X-Men back to the 90s. In the “present,” Forge and Bishop locate the X-Men and decide who goes to when to bring them back.

The first episode “Days of Past Future” is inspired by The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix comic book miniseries from the 90s with Scott and Jean in the future where their son Nathan was sent (like I said, if you do not remember this, you are better off rewatching season one first). Alongside Scott and Jean are Storm, Morph, and Wolverine. It’s an Apocalyptic future (wordplay definitely intended) where Apocalypse has an empire and the rebels are made of mutants joined by the aforementioned X-Men.

The third and fourth episodes are the season’s first two parter titled Rise of Apocalypse Part 1 and Part 2. These episodes cover the X-Men who were thrown into the past: Professor Xavier, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, and Magneto. They are in 3000 BC and are witnessing Apocalypse before he became Apocalypse and is still an impressionable young mutant named En Sabah Nur.

Leading his tribe against the oppressive Pharoah, En Sabah Nur is grappling with the struggle to find a balance by being both strong and merciful. While inspired by the miniseries Rise of Apocalypse, there are more story elements which make it its own thing and helps to set the scene for presumably what will be the main arc in season 2.

The second, and probably my favorite, of the episodes thus far is titled A Force to be Reckoned With. This episode is all about what the mutants who remained in “the present” are up to during the X-Men’s absence. The leads are Jubilee and Sunspot, who are recruited by Cable to join X-Force. This is an X-Force episode. The team we follow is X-Force and even the opening credits for the show were changed to reflect the show’s X-Force team.

This is just the creators of the show showing how much they love their job and I love them for it. This episode is also the episode, so far, that is a cameo extravaganza. 90s X-Factor makes an appearance, kids from Generation-X make appearances, Quentin Quire is there, Glob Herman is there, Nature Girl is there; the episode is so packed that fans will be rewatching it just to see everyone and I am here for it.

With little touches like making sure the opening credits reflect who is in the episode, and including lines of dialogue lifted directly from the comics which the story was inspired, its very clear that the creators of the show are not just fans but have creative takes on how to tell stories that have enough elements from the comics that other fans will recognize. The action scenes are still dynamic, Jubilee in episode 2 has an amazing action sequence, the drama is still intense, all of the Xavier and Magneto stuff always, and the music is so good at being operatic and reverent and cool.

I loved these first four episodes of X-Men 97 Season 2 but, despite the dramatic ending in episode 4, I feel that the best is yet to come for season 2. I, like all fans, will be scrambling to try and figure out which storyline is next and in which direction the show is heading and that is all part of the fun of watching a show week to week.

I still cannot say that this show is appropriate for very young kids, despite it being animated; a prevalent theme this season appears to be whether its ok to kill, but if someone is mature enough to read X-Men comics, they can certainly handle X-Men 97 Season 2.
