Hey All!

Punisher: One Last Kill is a Marvel Television single story specifically created for Disney Plus and was co written by its star Jon Bernthal. Jon Bernthal has now been Marvel’s official Punisher star for ten years since his debut in season two of the Netflix iteration of the Daredevil series (which is now also available for viewing on Disney Plus). Bernthal’s portrayal of Frank Castle focused heavily on grounding the character by really digging into the trauma associated with his time in the service and the loss of his family and how that haunting is what motivates him.

Bernthal’s Punisher also very blatantly has addressed the misuse and misunderstanding of The Punisher’s mission and ideology by illustrating how he is not a character to be emulated and admired. One Last Kill continues the tragedy that is the cautionary tale of Frank Castle.

One Last Kill is probably the smallest scale Punisher story told with the whole piece taking place within a block in New York’s Little Sicily. Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle from both Daredevil, Daredevil Born Again, and his own previous show The Punisher. Also returning are Jason Moore as Frank’s fellow former Marine Curtis, and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page. The newest addition comes in the form of a villain from The Punisher comics: Ma Gnucci, portrayed by Judith Light (Who’s The Boss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, The Menu).

Running 48 minutes, including credits, One Last Kill feels less like a story and more like a study in the trauma that guides what is Frank Castle’s life. The first half of the piece feels very directionless because that is where the character is at the time, but the second half delivers on the direction for Frank by giving him a task and that also seems to be thematic for what One Last Kill is going for. Castle is visited by three types of “ghosts”: the marines from his unit who keep telling him he needs purpose, the family he lost who keeps asking for him to be present, and Karen Page who tries to give him a purpose and future.

As aforementioned, the second half of One Last Kill is where the action picks up with Frank killing his way through a barrage of thugs seeking the bounty placed on his head. Fire, blood, grunts, screams, bullets, and destruction of property are pushed to the extreme to show the chaos in which Frank Castle thrives. Matching a body count and choreography that can give John Wick a run for its money, Bernthal does also manage to be less graceful and more “bull in a China shop” than the killers from the John Wick universe; which again lends to the distinction that this Punisher is not superhero but more a destructive force of nature.

The Punisher One Last Kill is extremely violent in so many ways and, even more than Daredevil Born Again, is not meant for consumption for younger and less mature viewers. But amidst the violence is also the important message to anyone who may suffer from trauma of any kind that there is hope to find purpose and thus a reason to live. Even broken people who think they have nothing can make a difference for good in the world with proper direction.

Twenty years after the release of the now highly revered film The Devil Wears Prada, Disney now owns the once Fox owned film and is releasing the first sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Returning cast includes all the great characters from the original including Anne Hathaway as Andrea “Andy” Sachs, Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling, and Meryl Streep who was nominated for the academy award best actress in her original performance as the iconic character Miranda Priestly.

In addition to the cast returning, David Frankel returns as director, Aline Brosh McKenna (who wrote the original film adapted from the book) returns as the writer, Theodore Shapiro returns as the film’s music composer, and Florian Ballhaus returns as the film’s cinematographer.

The lists above really reflect the care and effort taken to recapture the magic of the 2006 film with no cast replacements and few crew replacements. The most notable crew replacement is costume designer Patricia Field (who also was the costume designer for the hit show Sex and the City) replaced by Molly Rogers (who was assistant to Patricia Field on both the original Devil Wears Prada as well as Sex and the City). The shift in style for the fashion is very apparent with the colors used more sparingly as well as the overall changes for each character’s wardrobe to reflect Rogers’ sense of style.

New cast members include Kenneth Brannagh (Murder on the Orient Express, Tenet) as Miranda Priestly’s latest husband Stuart; Justin Theroux (Beetlejuice  Beetlejuice) as Benji, rich Tech Bro and “love interest” to Emily; Simone Ashley (Bridgerton) as Miranda’s new assistant Amari; B.J. Novak (The Office) as Jay Ravitz, son of the owner of “Runway Magazine”; and Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels, Elementary) as Sasha Barnes, one of the richest women in the world.

There are way more returning and newer cast of characters but it’s honestly so many that it would take forever to list. Parts of the movie play as a who’s who from homages to the original film and cameos from celebrities and icons from the fashion world, while new characters have only just enough screen time to serve as little more than foil to the main characters than anything else.

How does one tackle a sequel that’s twenty years removed from the original? There is a book which does it, but The Devil Wears Prada 2 is not a direct adaptation of “Revenge Wears Prada.” Aline Brosh Mckenna has crafted a new story that is reflective of the changes which transpired over the last twenty years. Today’s generation of young employees will not tolerate the way Miranda stepped on her employees in 2006. HR complaints and guidance have softened Miranda Priestly, and Streep’s performance reflects that in both her more exposed vulnerabilities as well as her spoken frustrations. The character of Miranda Priestly and her ways, as well as the ways of print media, are going the way of extinction and she no longer commands the same fear from the world she inhabits. It is in this way that The Devil Wears Prada 2 really stands apart from its predecessor.

While Miranda and Nigel struggle to stay relevant, Andy and Emily have evolved. Andy, now a seasoned journalist, now speaks her mind and carries herself with confidence in who she is and what she brings to the table. Emily has maintained the cool, cruel, and calculating demeanor she demonstrated twenty years ago, but now wields power and authority with the same regard with which Miranda Priestly was known.

With Miranda Priestly a more vulnerable character, Emily Charlton has become the character who drops the most memorable lines which echo the Miranda Priestly attitude. “The bridges that I burn will light my way” is a line which perfectly captures the essence of her character.

I would say there are two overarching themes to The Devil Wears Prada 2. The first being that times are changing for the better or the worse and all we can do is mold with the change and hold onto that which we value. In the case of the film, it is “Runway” itself which is in jeopardy and it becomes a battle for who will control it and to keep it alive.

The other theme is that of defining your legacy and yourself not by your family, not by your romances, but through your work. Rather than manipulate the men who control things, the women in the film seek and seize control to guide their own destinies.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is not a typical sequel in that it is not a copy of its predecessor. It is still a comedy, and the type of humor remains, but the perspective is no longer about surviving a horrible experience and becoming stronger from it. The perspective is now how to use strength and unity to overcome the obstacles: the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 does succeed in its “sequeldom” in being that which it is advertising: a parade of fashion. Between the actors Streep, Hathaway, Blunt, and Tucci, no character wears the same outfit more than once. The film includes multiple montages in which every shot is one or more of the characters in a completely different outfit. Hathway has over forty wardrobe changes, Streep has almost thirty, while Tucci and Blunt have probably a dozen outfit changes each.

In addition to the barrage of fashion on display, the exteriors of New York and Milan, Italy also get a lot of screen time as beautiful scenery along with the interiors of the buildings. There is always something to look at on the screen but sometimes the best thing on the screen is the incomparable Meryl Streep. Streep’s natural charisma and talent become the center of every scene because no matter who is doing what, it is her performance which is always the most eye catching.

One final word on The Devil Wears Prada 2 is that the fans of the original should enjoy seeing how their beloved characters have and have not evolved as the world within the film expands and hopefully enjoy the eye candy of fabulous people in expensive settings wearing expensive fashion.

We had the great fortune of watching the first eight episodes of the newest Star Wars animated series Maul: Shadow Lord. Maul: Shadow Lord falls within the pre-established Star Wars animated universe which includes The Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Bad Batch. Much like the prior Star Wars animated series, Maul: Shadow Lord takes place between the feature films and provides a deeper dig into characters, both major and minor, from those feature films. And, also much like the previous series, Maul: Shadow Lord really tells a more personal level story which often takes certain aspects of the “galaxy far, far away.”

The Clone Wars explored the dynamics of war through soldiers and civilians of various backgrounds with the clones, jedi, and the various alien species. It discussed politics and tragedies which were small on a galactic level but very important to those minor characters through whom the stories were told.

Rebels showed, on a more intimate level, how a small group of people from various backgrounds formed a family to survive the dangers of a galaxy under a tyrannical rule. 75 episodes with the crew of The Ghost, was longer than we spent with any set of characters as we witnessed 4 seasons of their small victories and large tragedies.

The Bad Batch explored what soldiers who were cast aside, or forgotten, by their government dealt with the aftermath of war; how to survive a galaxy that made them and no longer wants them. How do they eat? Where do they live? It very much was an analogy of the experience of war veterans that had no home. They even had stories which illustrated ptsd in some of the characters.

Maul: Shadow Lord seems to be about how people who are not taking sides in the coming rebellion must navigate their own personal goals amidst the tyrannical occupation by The Empire. In addition to the characters involved, the common theme of telling someone to be compliant for survival purposes is repeated through multiple episodes of the show. One character’s mother specifically says to them “Do as they say” in the tone so to indicate that compliance is the only option for survival despite it not being right: a sentiment too familiar to people who living under a tyrannical government.

The story of Maul: Shadow Lord finds Maul (yes the Darth Maul character introduced in Star War Episode One The Phantom Menace and has appeared in multiple animated series) with an assembled band of mercenaries with the goal of vengeance against those who betrayed him. In his employment includes mandalorians, assassins, and a mix of intergalactic aliens and criminals. 

In addition to Maul’s crew, there is a cast of characters who are more on the side of order and are more traditional “good guys.” Captain Brander Lawson is voiced by Golden Globe winner Wagner Moura (Narcos, The Secret Agent) and is the character who gets close to as much screen time as the titular Maul. He is a Captain on a police force on the planet Janix, a planet that very much has a metropolitan capital, but not physically occupied by The Empire…..yet. He is a good police officer whose job has ruined is family life: an estranged wife and a son he barely spends time with. Through Captain Brander we get a very police drama story like has not been done before in Star Wars.

The inclusion of Brander’s story explores the world of local authorities and how they operate in a world under the thumb of The Empire. There are some in the local authority who love the idea of having the resources and manpower of The Empire and there are some who see The Empire coming in “to help” as something akin to authorities on the Federal Level coming in and taking over completely. One episode illustrates the many problems the local police encounter when The Empire comes in and disrupts the procedure.

Other characters include the Droid Cop Two Boots (played by Richard Ayoade of The Watch and The Bad Guys movies) who is Captain Brander’s partner. Jedi Master Eeko Dio Daki (played by Dennis Hasybert most notably from the popular tv show 24) and his padawan Devon (voiced by Gideon Adlon most recently from Terminator Zero). Crime Boss Looti Vario (voiced by Chris Diamantopoulos from The Bad Guys movies), Rook Kast (Vanessa Marshall most notably from Star Wars Rebels), and Icarus (Steve Blum most notably from Star Wars Rebels) make up Maul’s main entourage.

In terms of the timeline, the references to the Fall of Mandalore and the crew assembled by Maul place this well after The Clone Wars and likely after The Bad Batch but also taking place before Rebels. Maul is older and no longer the unstoppable force of destruction but, still fueled by his rage, only has dropped from being THE most dangerous person “in the room” to ONE OF the most dangerous people “in the room.” He is very much on his way to becoming the more manipulative character that we see in Rebels.

Do not let this beginning of his transition deter you though; in each of the eight episodes, Maul still gets down with his trademark dual lightsaber and provides action sequences like ONLY animated Star Wars can provide.

Speaking of action in Star Wars animation, Maul: Shadow Lord continues the tradition of Star Wars animation pushing the dynamics of the animation. I have never seen animation which captures and conveys the speed of the characters movement and fighting the way that Star Wars illustrates. The best example of this is in episode 6 titled “Night of the Hunted” (directed by Steward Lee and written by Chris Yost who are both veterans of Star Wars animated series), which is a nonstop exciting chase with the main characters through the city.

Maul: Shadow Lord fits very well into the Star Wars animated series universe and depending on your experience with prior shows like The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, and Rebels, you may or may not feel comfortable letting very young kids watch. Star Wars animation has always done an amazing job of bringing more complex stories into animation in a way that is still appropriate for kids. Star Wars animation recognizes that children can learn about more complex moral issues if they are shown and discussed in a tasteful way.

The best example of this in Maul: Shadow Lord is when the character Brander is sitting in an interrogation room and he sees fingernail scratches on the table. Nothing is said about how or why the scratches are there, but to those who are paying attention it is very clear what happened. Taking that scene into perspective, parental guidance for the less mature audiences is suggested for Maul: Shadow Lord.

To make it you’ll first, Spray a square baking dish with non-stick spray.

Add the chocolate chips to the bottom of the dish in an even layer.

Place the Peeps marshmallows on top and bake at 350 for 5-10 minutes.

Watch carefully, so that the marshmallows don’t puff too much, or burn.

Easy Easter Peeps S’Mores Dip!

A fun and easy Easter themed S'Mores Dip recipe to make with Peeps Marshmallows!

Prep Time 5 minutes minutes

Cook Time 7 minutes minutes

Servings 10

Ingredients

• 3 Cups milk chocolate chips
• 18 Peeps Bunny marshmallows Can be Bunnies or Chicks!
• Graham crackers or any cookies or cookie you'd like to dunk.

Instructions

• Preheat oven to 350

Hey All!

Daredevil Born Again returns to Disney Plus March 24^th and its continuation from the events of the episodes released in 2025 have me considering this as more Season One Part 2 rather than just Season 2. The characters, aesthetic style, and tone are all the same here and by the final episode I would say there is a resolution, albeit not a conclusion, that was not really present at the end of the first nine episodes.

The cast in this includes only one newcomer in the form of Matthew Lillard (Scream, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and the live action Scooby Doo films from the early 2000s). His character of Mr. Charles is a cocky and very connected implied CIA operative. How connected is he? Well at one point he takes a phone call from a very high-ranking character in the US Government who has previously appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; be sure to be listening for their name.

Returning cast is almost everyone. The obvious and most important ones are of course Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin respectively. Other obvious returns include Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, and Wilson Bethel as Dexter/Bullseye, and each one of them gets more screentime, more to do, and have a much greater impact on the story in the show. It is in providing these key characters and their talented actors who embody them which really mark the elevation in Daredevil Born Again’s return.

In particular, I really enjoyed every moment that Wilson Bethel was on the screen. Bethel manages to deliver the perfect balance of fun and psychotic through Bullseye trying to “do the right thing” and thinking he is “doing the right thing” with his chosen acts of violence. In a season which is devoid of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, Bullseye fills the slot as the person racking up the body count. There is a diner scene in the middle of the season which will become a moment for me to watch over and over with demented glee.

Cast introduced for Born Again who are returning include Genneya Walton (Candy Cane Lane) as B.B. Urich, Margarita Levieva (The Lincoln Lawyer, The Acolyte) as Heather Glenn, Clark Johnson (Homicide: Life on the Street) as Cherry, and Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of New York, The Deuce). Of these returning cast, it is Gandolfini’s Daniel and Levieva’s Heather Glenn who get the most evolution in their stories and characters.

Also returning, although in less noticeable volume after episode 3, is the use of changing aspect ratio, exaggerated lighting and filters, and the “man on the street” interview inserts provided by the BB Report which was introduced when Daredevil Born Again began. A counter “viral video” called “City Without Fear” is also introduced and inserted randomly in the same way. These moments continue to provide a definite aesthetic split from the original Netflix Daredevil show and that does impact the pacing and audience patience depending on individual interest. I think the use of these tricks is cool but overall have not added anything to enhance the show.

In its return, Daredevil Born Again levels up in both the quality and quantity of action and violence. Both including more sequences of choregraphed fight scenes and the violence inflicted by Wilson Fisk’s Gestapo-like Anti Vigilante Officers. The blending of real-life violence and impacts against the super natural violence really hammers home the idea that the characters performing the supernatural feats in these action sequences are meant to be more symbolic.

Though the action and violence has been increased, it is mainly in the scenes with the main characters of Matt, Fisk, Vanessa, Karen, and Bullseye where the show is at its best. These are seasoned actors who know their characters and love to make them shine. The energy in their conversations and arguments are the same quality and dynamism you would see on any prestige dramatic show.

For anyone curious, though The Punisher is not present, we do get two characters that return from the “Marvel Netflix” world. It has already been revealed that Kristin Ritter’s Jessica Jones is back, albeit in only a few scenes, but there is another character who returns in the final episode who really adds to the signal that Marvel Live Action is looking to capture more of what they had and explored in their previous “Marvel Netflix” shows. The impact these characters have on the show is about the same that The Punisher had in the beginning half of Daredevil Born Again.

Overall, Daredevil Born Again’s return is satisfying and relatable enough to hold audiences over until these beloved characters reappear in the next season. Daredevil Born Again is not the family friendly Marvel Cinematic Universe of The Avengers, so please consider that before watching with younger audiences.

Hey All!

Within the first 30 minutes of Pixar’s Hoppers, the film, by way of dialogue, overtly acknowledges its connection to James Cameron’s Avatar. The scene itself refers to how University Scientists have designed a device to put the consciousness of a human into the artificially designed animals as way to study animals within their habitat; hopping bodies.

The story also resembles Avatar with its themes on protecting the environment and how nature is often suffers in pursuit of the civilized progression of humankind. The same themes are also found in other animated classics such as Fox’s Fern Gully and Studio Ghibli’s Princess Monokoke.

The part of the story in Hoppers which is not covered in the aforementioned films is that the animal kingdom in Hoppers decides to strike back. This is more reminiscent of Studio Ghibli’s Pom Poko, in which racoons band together to fight the development of suburban homes and a golf course. In Hoppers, the mayor of Beaverton is wanting to destroy a creek and the land to make way for a highway.

Where Hoppers stands apart from all the previous iterations of this story is how the human champion of the wildlife and the land is connected. The heroine of Hoppers is Mabel Tanaka, a young university student who has been trying to liberate animals and fight industrialization since she was a child. In addition to always being a champion for animal freedom, Mabel also developed a connection to the creek which is in jeopardy by way of spending years of her life at said creek with her equally nature loving grandmother who, in Pixar and Disney tradition, is now deceased.

When the film catches up to Mabel (Piper Curda from May December and Teen Beach Two) in present day, we see she has the spirit of a fighter and combats, what looks like, every single development the mayor of Beaverton (Jon Hamm from Mad Men) initiates; they are on a first name speaking basis. The latest development is the destruction of a creek to make way for a highway.

She learns from one of the university professors, Dr. Sam (Kathy Najimy from Hocus Pocus) that if a beaver takes residence in the creek, them rebuilding the dam will bring back the other animal inhabitants and reestablish the ecosystem and halt development. While attempting to lure a beaver, Mabel encounters an artificial beaver and follows it back to the source which begins the adventure.

On this adventure, Mabel, with her consciousness in the artificial beaver, learns of the various animal kingdoms and the rules by which they live. The King of the Mammals is a beaver named George played by Bobby Moynihan (Saturday Night Live alum) with whom Mabel builds a very strong friendship and finds a place of value as the “Paw of the King”, a not so subtle but very cute Game of Thrones reference. Mabel, with her fiery passion, inspires an animal kingdom revolution which ends up being more intense and dangerous than she bargained for.

Hoppers is very much a story about revolution in that it asks people to change their paths and how they live their lives; the revolution in question is the ability for humanity and nature to coexist. When presented with the concept of the animal revolution, many of the kingdoms side with a more intense approach by stating they want to “squish” the humans the same way the humans squish them.

King George’s passiveness prevents the contrasting view of a more peaceful revolt which Mabel is both more practiced in and in favor of. From this point in the film, we see how the effects of a more intense revolution and why a more peaceful revolution in which we change how we work today by seeing one another’s perspective, provides a favorable outcome to everyone involved.

Fans of Pixar in general will also enjoy the wealth of easter eggs sprinkled through the film. References are made to Up as the schematics for a talking dog collar are revealed, a young turtle named Crush (same name as the sea turtle from Finding Nemo) is liberated in one scene, Mabel’s last name is Tanaka like one of the characters from Big Hero Six, and the caterpillar who is Prince of the Insects resembles Heimlich from A Bug’s Life. And, as per usual, the animation is perfection.

Pixar’s technology and art development maintains the highest of animation standards with its illustration of the trees, water, dirt, etc… of nature; I have always believed that no animation studio captures water the way that Pixar does and Hoppers is just another notch in the belt of proving that belief correct.

The messages of Hoppers to be both peaceful in how we change our lives as well as why it’s important to protect wildlife and nature, are made very clear so that the intended message is understood by the intended youthful audience. The moments of humor in Hoppers is also very big and the laughs come easy.

Chatting with Aaron Pierre on his character Main Attraction in the new animated film Goat!

Hey All!

We had the amazing opportunity to chat with Aaron Pierre about his amazing new character Main Attraction from the new Sony Pictures Animation film GOAT. This film comes to you from the studio behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and the artists that made KPop Demon Hunters.

It’s an original action-comedy set in an all-animal world. The story follows Will, a small goat with big dreams who gets a once-in-a-lifetime shot to join the pros and play roarball – a high-intensity, co-ed, full-contact sport dominated by the fastest, fiercest animals in the world.

Will’s new teammates aren’t thrilled about having a little goat on their roster, but Will is determined to revolutionize the sport and prove once and for all that “smalls can ball!”

It’s a great film about believing in yourself and never giving up on your dreams. It’s a fun film that the whole family can enjoy! Check it out in theaters now!

It was so fun to chat with Aaron Pierre about his character in the film and about what his dream animated character to voice would be. I felt like I already knew the answer since he was already the voice of Mufasa!

Aaron Pierre:

Mufasa was it. I’m not going to sit here and pretend it was anything else. I’ve already done it, however, uh, you know, there are so many animated characters available to play, available to voice and, you know, much more being created every year. So this is something certainly that I have every intention of, you know, alongside my film work and alongside my work on stage. I have every intention of doing this. um again and again and again. I have so much fun every time I do it. it’s quite addictive actually.

I was curious to know what quality does he love and relate to most about his character Main Attraction?

Aaron Pierre:

I think the quality that I love the most is his relentless pursuit of excellence. You know, granted, I think there are moments where his emotional maturity is not quite there and you know how that maybe presents itself is not always the most digestible way for those around him and is really not the most ideal objectively. But I think yes, his relentless nature is something that I really love and relate to. I think if I could have a conversation with main attraction, I would actually say to him that he doesn’t need to lose his tenacity. He doesn’t need to lose that relentlessness that he has in pursuing his goals and his dreams, but it can just be engaged with in a way that is kind and not detrimental to those around him.
