Willie came on first. This is about the 4th or 5th time I have seen him! He really played to the audience. Great showman.

After Willie John Mellencamp came on. Another great set. I know some of his music, though I don't own any. I really enjoyed his performance. Full energy all the way!

After Willie and John and another stage set, Bob Dylan exploded onto the stage! Lights, smoke, full band, and large sound! It was pretty incredible. This was my first time seeing Dylan. Truly a legend.

Here is the set list of the numbers that Dylan sang.

Great time, great show, wonderful!

Move Like A Jellyfish

This song is on a CD my youngest did from her Pepsi bottle cap trade-in for mp3 songs on Amazon. Now with Update

Tonight we are going to see Miss Emmylou Harris in concert along with Buddy Miller, Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin. I am looking forward to this concert, have not seen Emmylou in concert but have many of her CD's/ cassettes/ albums.
Her website has tour date information and her music. A good place to listen to her music is at her myspace webpage. I don't want to clip songs or photos that aren't open to all, so please go and listen. Her voice is as clear and pure as it was in the 1970's when she started with Gram Parsons. On her CD set Songbird, there is a wonderful biography and a 4 CD set of great songs.

Will share an update after seeing her tonight!

What a wonderful concert last night. The stage was setup like a guitar pull. All of us them were on the whole time, each taking turns playing while the others did some harmonies and accompaniments. Emmylou opened with a song from her 'Stumble From Grace' CD, she said it was one of the few happy songs they would play last night. She played 'Here I Am' and it was great. After Emmylou, Patty Griffin played, while we have her singing with others on their CDs - I didn't really know her. What an amazing voice.

Patty Griffin played various percussion instruments to accompany the others as they sang. She has a new CD coming out in August 11th on Amazon.com that is filled with Gospel Music titled 'Downtown Church'. The times she and Emmylou and Shawn sang together it was as if they were sisters harmonizing...it was hard to know where one voice ended and another began.

After Patty sang, Shawn Colvin sang. She too has a nice voice that blends well with the other two. When not singing she would accompany with tambourine. Shawn hails from Austin now, though you can read her whole bio on her website. It is interesting to read through the list of songs she has on soundtracks of multiple movies.

Buddy Miller, what can you say about Buddy Miller? He is funny, he is talented, and he is amazing to hear. Apparently his library of song knowledge is legendary. What is truly amazing is that he had a heart attack and bypass surgery in February and here it is May and he is on stage playing and singing. Man! In addition to being a great performer he is also producer of Patty Griffin's CD that is coming out, as well as many many others. He produces, composes, masters--- a jack-of-all-trades!

After playing 5 rounds of great songs, they adjourned -- to come back out for a few encores. The first was the three ladies singing 'Didn't Leave Nobody But the Baby' A Capella. Oh- such harmony! They continued to play a couple more songs before the evening ended. All in all a wonderful evening.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thequeenseclecticmusic.blogspot.com/2009/05/emmylou.html' title='Emmylou!! They also have NPR shows like "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me", "The Thomas Jefferson Hour", "Car Talk", "This American Life", and many more. I don't know that there are enough hours in the day to listen to all that is on this great radio station.

One of the DJ's that we like to listen to is Paul Shugrue. We especially like his show called "Out of The Box". (He also has another show that is fun to listen to, "A Shot of the Blues") This is a show that profiles new albums (ok- CD's). Sometimes it is new artists and sometimes it is old favorites that have a new album released. On a drive to the high school for a band booster meeting a few years ago I heard the best song. It was an artist I had not heard of, but a nice sound. Since high school I have listened to Carole King, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Maria Muldaur, Bette Midler, and Emmylou Harris. At the end of the month we are going to see Emmylou with Buddy Miller, Patty Griffin, and Shawn Colvin. Nanci Griffith and Bonnie Raitt are two whom we have seen in the past few years-- excellent shows!

One singer songwriter who has partnered with many is Iris Dement. Her soulful clear voice is truly unique. The first time I heard her, I wasn't sure if I liked her sound, for about one minute. Below are some of her songs, give a listen. She wrote the first three. The last one she is paired with John Prine who wrote that selection. She has sung with Merle Haggard, Delbert McClinton, John Prine, Emmylou Harris, and John McCutcheon to name just a few.

The first cassette I bought was back in 1992, Infamouos Angel. It has a song that my kids liked to sing. Imagine two little girls sitting in car seats in the back of a Volvo station wagon, singing at the top of their lungs-'Hotter Than Mojave in My Heart'. I loved adding interesting music to their repertoire.
Check out her web site. Iris Dement .

Graduation Tribute

This spring there are some very special graduates in my life. It always seemed like a good start to the weekend. To clean properly, one needs some tunes. Usually I have Raul Malo in the stack, but more about him another day. Today I had Sweetback Sisters CD Bang! to start off the cleaning frenzy.......more on them in June (this is what they call a teaser...new CD on the horizon). After listening to the Sweetback Sisters, the next CD was The Band, again, not today's topic.
After The Band, we had Old Crow Medicine Show. This is a group of young guys who play music that sounds like old timey music. Most of what they play is new, written by members of the band. They do play other's music, Woody Guthrie for example. Not the best recording of this... but boy they can play.

One that depicts some of our local area...James River Blues.

Will close this post with one that will stick with you...........

A window into my very eclectic taste in music- John Prine

This week Bob Dylan is on the cover of Rolling Stone. He is interviewed in this issue wiht all sorts of insights. The interview that really piqued my interest was the one on Huffingtonpost.com Here he talks about other songwriters that he likes. The list is interesting, coming from such a legend.
John Prine is one of these songwriters from the list. He has been a favorite of mine for many many years. He seems to have a melancholy sound to his music. His music ranges from Vietnam War protests to Love Songs. I guess you could call his music folk music. Word has it that Kris Kristofferson discovered him. I heard John Prine twice in concert and could hear him again and again. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998 and jokes about his voice and radiation treatments during his concerts. A biography of his life can be found here. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003.

His songs show what a sense of humor he has ---

His heart- You may have heard this one before-

Or you may have heard this if you like Bonnie Raitt --

The first time we saw John Prine, Nanci Griffith opened for him....she is another favorite.

All in all, John Prine is a wonderful songwriter, I hope you find yourself humming one of these songs after reading.
